hen you look at this issue (# 226) of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, you will realize that riding season is in full bloom! This is the biggest issue that we have had in years. Is it the weather? Is it the optimism of the business community? Is it because everyone is ready to ride? YES, it is! I have had an occasion or two to ride the bike to events and even to run some errands in between the rainy days, but now I think I will get more seat time in. You gotta just go for it! May 6th is International Women’s Ride Day. More information than I have room for is available at: http://motoress.com/international-femaleride-day/ The first weekend in May we will make our biannual trip to Maggie Valley for Thunder In The Smokies. We have been attending this rally since the very first one. This is the largest and longest running rally in the Great Smoky Mountains of NC. They also have a rally at the MV Festival Grounds September 8-10 and this year they are adding a third rally June 30-July 2. May 12-21 is the 78th Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Week and many advertisers have stepped up and are asking for your patronage this year. See their ads in this issue and remember that these are the businesses that don’t take you for granted. Many times, we hear, “We don’t need to advertise. The bikers are coming anyway.” That might be true to a certain extent, but the businesses that bought advertising in this issue are not taking you for granted. They are ACTIVELY seeking your business. Please consider this when you decide where you are going to drop that hard-earned cash. And don’t forget to let them know that you saw their ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. The 8th Annual Antique Motorcycle Club of America is held at Denton Farm Park in Denton, NC on May 19-20. This year’s marque is Indian and it is sure to be quite a show. If you like antique motorcycles, swap meets, and camping, you are going to love the AMCA Southern National Swap Meet at Denton Farm Park. Admission is only $12 for the whole weekend. Y’all Come! Memorial Day, May 29, was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. Originally called Decoration Day by General John Logan in 1868, Memorial Day “was designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land.” The tradition continues in honor of those who died in active military service and flags are flown at half-mast until noon. Traditionally it is observed on May 30 but now officially observed on the last Monday in May. There are lots of other great events to attend. Take your pick from the Cruisin’ Calendar and enjoy the ride.

American Flat Track At Charlotte

Story and photo by Alan Dockery There was no fooling around April 1 when American Flat Track roared onto the Dirt Track at Charlotte for the third race of the Southern Swing and 2017 season. For three weekends in a row, the dirt slinging stars have raced at Daytona, Atlanta, and Charlotte. 2017 is an exciting year since AMA Pro Racing rebranded the American Flat Track series and restructured the classes. Plus, one of the oldest rivalries in racing is back. Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle have new race bikes and are eager to lead the pack to the checkered flag. American Flat Track runs two classes, AFT Twins and AFT Singles. AFT Twins includes several eligible American, European and Japanese bikes with engines from 650cc – 999.9cc. These machines make more than 90 horsepower and were lapping Charlotte at more than 100 mph. AFT Singles is where the young dirt track talent perfects their skills on 251cc – 450cc machines.

Besides the racing there was more to see and do thanks to the AFT Events folks. I hope you arrived at the track early to check out the displays and vendors outside. Harley-Davidson Motor Company and Indian Motorcycles had large displays. That street-legal VR-1000 would be fun in the mountains. The Blue Ridge Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America brought out flat trackers from many years ago. The

American Flat Tracker Clothing Company truck was busy selling T-shirts and other things to remember the day. Once you were inside the track the focus was on the riders, machines, and racing. This event brought 46 AFT Singles and 39 AFT Twins riders to the Charlotte dirt track. Teams came from all over America and a few foreign countries. Throughout many motorcycle racing series around the world, the stars have flat track racing in America on their resume. Representing the Carolinas was – Robert Lewis, Tarboro, NC; Jason Griffin, Easley, SC, and Lloyd Widener, Trenton, SC. The roots of American Flat Track can be traced back to the first bikers challenging each other in the 1920s. Despite most of the AFT Twins field being Kawasaki Ninja 650s, the talk was about a rivalry going back to the beginning of flat track racing. Harley-Davidson and Indian are fighting it out again with new machines for 2017. Yes, the Harley XR750R that has dominated the sport for decades is still raced by several teams. But the bike for the H-D Factory Team is now the XG750R, based on the 750 Street. Indian has a really good looking Scout FTR750 flat tracker now. And in the first two races of the season, those goodlooking machines have dominated the winner’s podium. First and second at Daytona and all three top spots on the Atlanta short track. So, the rivalry was hot at Charlotte. I interviewed most of the Harley and Indian riders to see how the season was going. “This season has been a little bit of a struggle,” said Brandon Robinson #44 Harley team rider. “We’re still learning since it’s a new bike. Still in the development stage. Putting in the hard work week in and week out. Slowly getting better every race. One way to look and that is up.” About the Dirt Track at Charlotte he said, “I love this place and have had success here. It’s so good to come back to a track you are comfortable with.” The rider of the #2 H-D XG750R, Kenny Coolbeth Jr.

agreed, “It hasn’t been a good start to the season for us. We put so much effort into it throughout the winter, working on the bike and prep. We thought we were so good and then we went to the race and obviously, we weren’t. That’s why we are bummed out. It’s not due to lack of effort. The guys are working their tails off and we will be there at the end for sure. This is a good team to be on and it’s pretty cool to represent Harley-Davidson. At Charlotte, today we have beautiful weather and a beautiful track and I usually do well here. Feeling really comfortable on the bike and looking forward to the race.” Brad Baker was the quickest in practice on the #6 Indian Scout FTR750. “I crashed bad in Daytona and had a concussion,” he said. “I’m feeling good and set fast time in practice. Charlotte’s cool. Obviously, the facility is bad ass. Everything is first class. The dirt is really cool. Nice Southern red clay and good banking. The guys are doing a good job preparing it.” About the Indian race bikes Brad said, “They are doing an incredible job with the street bikes and race bikes. I think I’ve found the most comfy ride of my career so far. Only rode it twice on a track like this and we are up to speed. Feeling really good. They did a good job on this bike and I have a great team backing me.” Jared Mees is the star of the 2017 season having won the first two races on the #9 FTR750. “The first couple races have gone extremely well. Obviously, winning is the goal,” he said. “You have to do everything right because the fastest guy doesn’t always win. You gotta put it all together and connect the dots. Fortunately, we have been really good and able to do that. Good routine and prepare good.” “I think the rivalry is good,” Mees added. “It’s something flat track needed. Indian went all out and hired three really good riders. And things are going well.” I want to echo the racers’ and AFT staffs’ praise for the Dirt Track at Charlotte. putting on the race. Very professional folks and easy to work with. Y’all know anything Bruton Smith builds is going to be the best. I may love local tracks with warped wooden bleachers, but that Charlotte track is an impressive facility. And the track staff, from the ticket booth to the guest services folks, was great all day and evening. Flat track is run in multiple heats and semi-final races typically on Saturday afternoon and night. Fans get intense action with short breaks between the races to get food, drink and souvenirs. As the track crew and teams ready for the races, fans are allowed in the pits. Riders are at the front of their pits talking with fans, giving out posters and SWAG while signing autographs. Former NASCAR star and Daytona 500 winner Ernie Irvan was the Grand Marshal for the Harley-Davidson Charlotte Half-Mile at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Irvan raced for 11 seasons at the top level of what is now called the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, winning 15 races and the 1991 Daytona 500. When it came down to sliding sideways and roaring to the checkered flag, defending American Flat Track Grand National Champion Bryan Smith, riding the #1 Indian, scored his first victory of the season in the AFT Twins class presented by Vance & Hines. Smith ended Jared Mees’ winning streak leading by more three seconds at the checkered flag. “We didn’t qualify fastest, but once we got racing, I felt comfortable,” said Smith. “I feel like in any race if I can beat Jared, I can win the race, and if I beat him, I can win the championship. I’ve got to get back to doing it more often. I especially wanted to win today, because we’ve got some bragging rights going into the mini off-season before we get to the miles. Hopefully, we can pick up where we left off last year in the miles – winning.” One of the fans’ favorites, Sammy Halbert rode the #69 Estenson Logistics old Harley-Davidson XR750R to third place. Coolbeth was the highest finishing rider on a new Harley XG750R taking sixth place. Dalton Gauthier, #22 Yamaha YZ 450F, took his third consecutive victory in AFT Singles competition. Brandon Price, #92 Kawasaki KX450F, was just over a second behind in third. Popular racer, Shayna Texter, #52 Honda CRF450R, took third, capturing her second consecutive podium finish. Sadly, the AFT Singles race had a couple of bad crashes. Monday morning, we learned that Jamison Minor died from his injuries. Ray Price Harley-Davidson Butt Pickin’ Contest By: Kris Weiss It was a beautiful day that started off a little cool but warmed up nicely for all of the activities planned at Ray Price Harley-Davidson on March 4th. The day started off with many vendors setting up to sell their products including Hog Trough motorcycle cup holders and Lady Hawke Jewelry and Fashions. The UNC REX Blood Mobile started siphoning at 9am and the dozen BBQ cookers were in full swing with their butts on the grill. The lady’s themed day started off with the registration for the Lady’s Only Bike Show sponsored by The Garage at Ray Price and there were 24 fabulous entries. Handling the registration was Ray and Jean Price’s granddaughter, Rebecca Richardson. And greeting the registrants were land speed racer, Jody Perewitz and Harley stunt rider, Christina Billings, both are Ray Price Harley-Davidson sponsored riders. Throughout the day, Jody and Christina had the opportunity to tell their riding stories to a crowd of enthusiasts and answer questions about how they got started in the male-dominated world of motorcycle riding. LaureNicole kicked off her rockin’ music set at 11am while the emcee, Tim O’Connell, kept the crowd engaged with announcements about everything that was happening inside and out. He introduced the judges who would be tasting 12 differently prepared BBQ dishes. Nearly a thousand people welcomed

By: Beth Gorman Freezing For A Reason takes on a whole new meaning for Stanly County Special Olympics. The sun was out but it was pretty brisk. The event coordinators, Kathy Odell and Kim Login, couldn’t have been happier to see the group of motorcycles that showed up that morning for the Polar Plunge. Ghost Riders MC had some of their local chapters participate in this event. They want to support the community and this is one way they chose to show their support. Five of their members from Albemarle and Rockwell chapters actually took the plunge. They were the “brave “ones. I don’t think the water was above 60º and the air temperature wasn’t much warmer. The rest were there to show their support. “Our club likes to give back to our community as much as possible, Special Olympics are not the only organization we support,” said “Sonny” and Tonya Chandler. The club also supports other organizations within Stanly County that help those in need or improve the County area. Freezing For A Reason also had corn

hole tournament, silent auction and raffle auction. All proceeds were donated to Stanly County Special Olympics. Kim and Kathy are hoping that next year it will be even bigger with more participants. You’ve heard of the ice bucket challenge, well, I think bikers in a polar plunge sounds even better. 3rd Annual Gathering Of The Tribes By: Wally Wersching I had been planning to go to the 3rd Annual Gathering Of The Tribes at the Spartanburg Harley-Davidson dealership on Saturday, April 8th, for quite some time. The forecast was for cool temps and sunny skies, so I knew there would be a crowd at the event. I awoke at about 6:30 am on Saturday morning, and looked out the window to see frost on the roofs in the neighborhood. I checked the temperature, and it was around 35º. I waited until 10:30 am before I left. I bundled up, and rode “Miss Vickie”. The Spartanburg Harley dealership is only about a half hour from home. I knew that I wouldn’t get too cold in a half hour even though it was still in the low 50’s. I followed a small group of bikers as we all rode into the dealership. I asked to make sure that I wouldn’t get blocked in by bikes that arrived after I did, and was assured that wouldn’t happen. I wasn’t going to stay very long, and really hate to be blocked in. I’m a little paranoid about that. I was instructed to park in front next to the road. I had been to the Gathering Of The Tribes before, and was impressed by the number of different ministries in attendance. I knew some of my friends from the local biker ministries would be there. When I looked around, I saw a long line of tents, each of which represented a specific biker ministry or vendor. The

ministries were telling anyone who walked up about the benefits of their ministry, and their church. I talked with Mike from the Carolina Faith Riders and his son. It’s always a pleasure talking with him. They should be starting their bike nights next month in Forest City’s Sonic Drive-In. It was very crowded. I stopped at a few tents to talk with some friends, and meet some of the vendors. In one tent, they were giving away free bright yellow signs that said, “Look Twice Save A Life – Motorcycles Are Everywhere”. It’s too big to carry on my bike. I have one in my front lawn from when I drove my car to the event last year. It’s eye-catching. For more info, go to www. maalooktwice.com. Another tent had all kinds of stickers and patches. There probably was every patch or sticker ever made on their table. There must have been thousands of them! I was surprised to see the local Legends Chapter of the AMCA (Antique Motorcycle Club of America) was there with the Harley Shovelhead that they are raffling off. Winning the old Harley would be a great reason to join the chapter. They started serving free food at 11:30. It looked like they had free hot dogs with all the fixin’s. It was hard to get very close because of the crowd, and long line. After walking around a couple times, I walked into the dealership. It too was full of people. There was a large stage outside where there would be live entertainment along with people giving inspirational talks later in the day. Some people were already sitting in the chairs waiting for it all to begin. It was a great way to spend a Saturday. I hope to do it again very soon.

Freedom Biker Church Triad Bike Blessing By: Mark Infield On April 15th, Freedom Biker Church Triad held a bike blessing at Harley-Davidson of Greensboro. I thought it was a good day to do it seeing as it was Easter weekend and the weather couldn’t have been better. Freedom Biker Church Triad had a pretty neat set up for blessing the bikes and riders. They had a cover that was open on both ends that allowed the bikes to enter and exit. When a bike entered the canopy, Pastor Randy Austin and his prayer warriors encircled the bike and rider, joined hands to form a circle and asked God’s blessing and protection for the bike and rider. Out the other end, a line formed on Farragut Street for the ride that followed. The ride was a pleasant one. We made our way through southern Guilford County, eastern Alamance County and back into Guilford County before returning to Harley-Davidson of Greensboro. I think we came into and exited Pleasant Garden via every road that goes through it! It was, like I said, a pleasant ride and

there were no incidents or even close encounters. I really appreciate Freedom Biker Church for providing an alternative to main stream church. I am not saying anything derogative about any church, but Freedom Biker Church provides an environment that is comfortable for bikers and gives opportunities for fellowship and rides to anyone who would like to take part. They claim to be a brotherhood of bikers bound by a faith relationship in Jesus Christ, a passion for bikers and the freedom of the open road; bikers reaching bikers with the message of true freedom in Jesus Christ. 5th Annual Creekside Spring Bike Rally

Story and Photo by Alan Dockery Some folks just gotta start riding and rally season early. Well that’s great with me. The 5th Annual Creekside Spring Rally gave local bikers their first event of the season. Hosted by the Southern Gentlemen MC, the Creekside Rally was on a nice private country property, in Gaston County, NC, where bikers could catch up with friends and party for the weekend. The rally starts Friday afternoon as folks ride in to set up camp and vendor spots. Before long it looked like this was gonna be a good year for the rally. Lots of folks were setting up to be there all weekend. The bands started playing and getting bikers in the party mood. Bill Hardee was flippin’ burgers, bologna, and dogs. Phat Phil’s Smokehouse was ready to serve great meals from breakfast to supper. The bar was stocked with plenty of your favorite cold beverages. Friday night was cold, but the bands and fire barrels were hot. I think there were four bands Friday with the Honky Tonk Outlaws doing a great job closing out the night. Other bands opening the rally were, Front Porch, D.A.D., and Brett Greer. Saturday morning the weather looked great as folks slowly

got going and more people rode in for the day or to spend the night. A cruise of the vendors showed a variety of cool things to check out and buy. There are certain things you can only

That afternoon Magic Mike put on some bike games to entertain folks. He even entered some and won the Obstacle Course with the most complete and quickest time. Cuzz and Kelly cleaned the course for the Golf Biker Style game. Kelly was the Weenie Queen getting the biggest bite riding with Bart. Gary Starnes handled the fresh gravel best winning the Slow Ride. Bands started Saturday by noon and played into the night. The lineup included; Shannon Lee, Slater Street Sinners, Bakkwoodz, Mean Lisa, and Rare Breed. “Attendance was great this year. Nice weather helped bring out bikers for one of our biggest rallies yet,” said Lucky Brooks, rally coordinator. “A big thanks to Kelly McGinnis and guys. They pumped the water out of the area and hauled in

Daniel Veinot did a great job managing the sound system for the bands. We had lots of great vendors including Phat Phil and Billy Hardee serving some good food.” “More than anything thanks to our club members and friends who helped make it happen. They really went the extra miles. I was worried in the days before the party. Heavy downpours had the creek overflowing. They worked hard and did a great job of prepping the place. We are looking forward to the Fall Rally in late September,” Lucky said.

Wilson County Ghost Riders Benefit Poker Run By: Johnny Reb On April 15th, the Wilson County Ghost Riders had a benefit poker run for their brother, Knuckles. Knuckles was in a group of Ghost Riders when some idiot in a cage, who was not paying attention merged into the pack of 30 or so bikes on April 1st. Knuckles and another brother went down. Knuckles’ pelvis was crushed, shoulder dislocated, and, as always, road rash. The cage in question didn’t even slow down, by the time they checked on all the brothers, it was too late. They never caught up to it. The only thing they could confirm about it was it was a blue Toyota Prius. The woman driving was black. That’s all they could recall, and since they couldn’t catch her, she got away with really hurting our brothers. This is unacceptable, how can you not see 30 or so bikers in a pack and then not stop?! They just don’t care. If you are in the Wayne County area and know about this person, please see your nearest Ghost Rider, they would love to talk to this person! Anyway, on April 15th the Wilson chapter of Ghost Riders always does a poker run benefit and donate the proceeds to various charities. This year they knew what they had to do, and, as always, Ghost Riders take care of their own. Knuckles is a member of Martin County Ghost Riders. No matter, he is still their brother. The poker run covered a lot of miles and took about 3 hours to complete. Not counting hanging out at the six bars that had the cards. I wanted to go on this run, but I still can’t ride that far yet. As you all know I was also hit by an idiot in a cage. All in all, around $600 was raised for our friend, Knuckles. I also need to mention that Knuckles’ girlfriend Amanda is due to have a baby the end of May. He is in traction and they are in need of all the baby items that they can get. 31st Annual Durham HOG Bike Show & Chili Cook-Off

By: Kathy Johnson Once again, the Durham HOG Chapter had a sunny warm day for their bike show and chili cook off. Every year they seem to get lucky with the weather. seeing the parking lot filled with vendors and wall to wall motorcycles has become a familiar sight. Everyone was putting winter in their rear-view mirror and ready to have a great day. Good music, food, raffles, dice game, giveaways, bike show, chili cook off, (might as well toss in the kitchen sink) made up the agenda for the day. There was a bit of everything for any kind of taste and it was well organized and planned. The chili smelled great and there were many entries. The Judge’s Choice winner of the cook off this year was Linda Morris. The People’s Choice Winner was Melanie Mosier. As for the bike show it was the usual suspects entered with a few new ones, so here are this year’s winners. Guardians Of The Children 1st Annual Ride By: Gary Steelman First off what are Guardians of the Children? These men and women who serve to improve quality of life for abused and neglected children. Their organization is dedicated to protecting victims of child abuse and to partner with other agencies to raise awareness of the prevalence of child abuse. The ride today started out in Wilkesboro at Crossroads HD and the group rode through the foothills to Horsefeathers in Sherrills Ford and then on to Tilley’s HD in Statesville, NC. Another group of riders from the south came from Charlotte to Mooresville and around to Tilley’s as well. There were over three hundred riders in the poker run, and it seems a lot of them were having such a great time at the stops along the way they didn’t make it all the way to Tilley’s before dark. They missed out on CJ Ballard’s musical entertainment and the food supplied at Tilley’s. So go things in life. The riders were welcomed to Tilley’s with the rocking of CJ and the band. The door prizes went on all afternoon and the guys from Crossfire UMC cleaned up on prizes that they donated back to GOC to auction off to raise more money for the cause. Thanks guys. The folks all had a great time even though Grizz had to call the winners of the grand prize HD leather jacket and helmet who had already left for home. The Guardians of the Children are a great organization that help children all over the US. The local chapter in Moores-

Vietnam War Veterans Day 2017 By: Wally Wersching I was looking on the Vietnam War 50th Anniversary website: www.VietnamWar50th. com. for something local. Last year there were many events on March 29th honoring Vietnam veterans. The only one I found locally this year was the free pancake breakfast from 9-11 am at the Morganton-Burke Senior Center in Morganton, NC. It was sponsored by the Quaker Meadows Chapter, National Society - Daughters Of The American Revolution (NSDAR), Burke County Veterans Services, and the NC Department Of Military and Veterans Affairs of Burke County. It was open to Vietnam veterans and their families. After the breakfast, there would be a short ceremony to thank the veterans, and present them with their Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Pins. When I awoke on Wednesday morning, it was sunny, and relatively warm with temps in the low 50’s. I went on-line to check the weather forecast, and while I was there, I learned that on Tuesday March 28th President Trump signed into law an act of Congress that honors Vietnam veterans with their own day of recognition. Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 designates every March 29th as National Vietnam War Veterans Day, and calls for the U.S. flag to be flown that day to honor those who served in Vietnam. That was long overdue. The Vietnam War Veterans have been slighted for too many years. Now they have a special day each year that honors them. When I left home the temps were a little chilly. I should have dressed warmer but I knew that it would warm up into the upper 70’s later in the day. I had to live with my decision, and tough it out. I rode into Morganton until I saw the Senior Center on my left. I pulled into the parking lot at a little after 9:15 am. I was surprised to see that the lot was completely filled. I rode around, and found a little spot to park “Miss Vickie”. There’s always room for a motorcycle. I was also surprised to see that there were no other bikes in the lot. I walked inside, and was warmly greeted by the men at the museum display just outside the banquet room. We talked for a few minutes, and then I went in to get some pancakes. I was hoping that they would warm me up a little and they did. They were hot and delicious. While I was eating, I met a few other vets who were sitting near me. Everyone was very friendly. Most were wearing their Vietnam Veteran caps and some had patches on their clothes denoting the places they were stationed. After eating, I noticed a friendly face. The ladies from the Cleveland County Veteran’s services were now handing out the pancakes. They were surprised to see me in Morganton. I went over, and we had a pleasant conversation.

Then a young lady got on the PA, and announced that there would be a few speakers. One man started talking about the POW/Mia table set for one at the head of the banquet room. There’s a very reverent Remembrance Ceremony that makes everyone think about the people they knew who didn’t come home. It was very moving. The POW MIA Remembrance Ceremony can be found on-line at: https:// goo.gl/IT0q2q. If you have ever seen it you will REMEMBER. The next man was the guest speaker who told of his time in Vietnam while flying rescue missions pulling downed flyers out of the drink. It was very interesting. Then came the raffle when a lady went to the PA with the box of tickets. When we entered, we were all given raffle tickets, and they were raffling off twelve Quilts Of Valor made by the local quilting club. They were very colorful and beautiful. The lady started drawing tickets, and reading off the numbers. As I was standing there, I was wondering if I could take one home if I had won. I didn’t bring my bungee straps to carry it on my bike. She didn’t call my number but she got close – one number off. It appeared that Morganton has a large Vietnam Veterans group. They said that they meet once a month at a local restaurant for dinner, and conversation. I left at about 10:30 heading south on Rte. 18. It had warmed nicely. It was a very comfortable and very relaxing ride even as it passes through the small town of Casar, NC. It was a great way to spend a patriotic morning with a bunch of real American heroes.

Saturday, March 25, 2017 was a fantastic day for our biker community. Friends from all around came out to see what was gonna happen this time. We had a record turnout at Archie’s Shack. According to Mr. Archie, we packed the house and the parking lot with lots of friends. The photo shoot began at 1p.m. and went until the crowd couldn’t handle anymore. Old Bikes Are Fun And Affordable Story and photo by Alan Dockery I love my Shovelhead. I’ve had a few. They have the best Harley rumbling exhaust sound ever. And I have always been puzzled by the folks who think old bikes are hard to maintain and not reliable. I’ve ridden that bike across much of America and most of Korea with no issues. Old motorcycles have always been the coolest to some of us. Thousands of us ride them exclusively and belong to the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. On May 20, we will gather at Denton Farm Park to show them off, buy and sell parts, and take to the game field. I’m so glad to see not just old guys who want a bike they had when young, but young riders who appreciate their simplicity and style. But the thing I hear often about old Harleys or when riding one of my old Hondas is “I can’t afford and can’t work on an old motorcycle. Bike shops won’t work on them either.” Well folks, I’m here to tell you they ain’t all expensive. They ain’t all hard to work on, and there are still mechanics around who ain’t scared to fix your old motorcycle. “I can fix just about any old Harley,” said Vince Cason, owner of Vince’s Good As Gold. “That’s what I’ve been doing

for more than 40 years. People think they will fall apart riding down the road. They are not going to fall apart going down the road if they are put together right and maintained. Change your oil, keep the chain oiled and adjusted.” Old machines were built from the beginning to be rebuildable for years to come. And they can be upgraded and improved, too. There are not many original parts in my Shovel. If points and condensers scare you, electronic ignition is an easy upgrade. You can even hang fuel injection on them. “Shovelheads are good dependable bikes”, Vince said. “They are easily rebuildable. They must be done right and everything torqued right. The engine can be rebuilt for well under $2,000 according to what you want done. They are easy to hop up. If you want to go fast I can make it go fast, too. Fast costs money and reduces longevity. A good rebuild, a mild cam and carb upgrade and a Shovelhead will last you a long time.“ I keep telling folks now is the time to buy cool old Shovelheads and Ironhead Sportsters for good prices. You can find nice ready-to-ride bikes for good prices or fix one up. I like riding bikes that I bought cheap, spent some money on and then ride the hell out of them, knowing I don’t really have much money in it. Vince ain’t in the used bike market, but occasionally has one for sale. The bike in the photo is a great example. It’s essentially a brand new 1973 Superglide with updates such as better brakes. That’s probably my favorite bike of all time. I love the single-filler Superglide gas tank and its overall look. “I got this one from the original owner,” Vince said. “Tore it all apart. Put it back together with new parts. It is literally a brand-new motorcycle I will sell for $8,000.” Buy this or another old bike. Have Vince make it new. Come ride with the rest of us old bike guys or show it off to your friends.

Double D’s Burnout Saloon Spring Bash By Rose and Lloyd Every year David and Missi Thompson have a huge Spring Bash. This year was no exception, maybe just much bigger. There were so many things going on it was truly hard to keep up with all the excitement. Their new outside bar, a vintage truck built by Dan Saddler and crew from Saddler Auto, was delivered early in the day. There was an Easter egg hunt with a silver egg containing 2 ticket to see Sunny Ledford. The band Head Trip provided the entertainment. Several booths were set up for Onry N Mean Cooking Team, Forever Two Wheels Brotherhood, and more jewelry than you can imagine. There was a burnout contest with Jerrod, Lance and Kelly on one bike, and Chris. They all won a $50 beer tab. The Pin Up Contest held by Biker Trash Nation was a great success. The winners from the area will go to The Camel Bike Fest for a final competition with several other ladies. The winner this Saturday was #6,

beautiful Brittany Beacham. We have been to many events at Double D’s Burnout Saloon, but by far this was the largest. There was well over a hundred bikes parked everywhere, even in sides of the road for a least 1/2 mile each way. A good estimate was close to 1000 people there having a great time and participating in all the activities. A huge thanks to all that came out and participated; all the vendors, the band, the contestants. Thanks to all the hardworking bartenders, Nikki, Kanda, and Missi. They did a great job keeping cold drinks in everyone’s hand, and to Allen and Mike who kept that beer stocked and cold. Spring Bike Fest At Locked & Loaded Bar And Grill

By: Buzz The weather this spring has been crazy as your second cousin on your dad’s side. Mother nature has been switching between cold and warm for weeks now and you just hope for decent weather on the weekends. The Spring Bike Fest at Locked & Loaded Bar & Grill is a staple early in the “riding season” and always draws a crowd of bikers ready to break out the short sleeve shirts and those new koozies you picked up at the winter swap meets. On April 9th, the weather was cooperating and everyone was ready for a good time. The literal swarm of motorcycles made it obvious that Locked & Loaded’s Spring Bash was going to be barn burner again this year. The guys on parking lot duty did a heck of a job directing bikes to open parking spots in a large parking lot that was packed with chrome and bikers. The bikers on the patio enjoyed front row seating for 454 band, a fire eating / dancing act and the Southern Grace band closed out the afternoon. There was a row of biker vendor staples ranging from jewelry, patches, and local bike shops. It was more than enough to keep you entertained. Inside was happening, too! Folks were belly up to the bar and a few rows deep getting beverages and watching the NASCAR race, the tables in the dining room were full and the waitresses and bartenders were slinging as fast as they could to keep up! I had a hard time taking more than five steps without running into a different group of friends that I hadn’t

seen since the weather had turned cold. It was great to see everyone. When the parking lot started to clear out, I did the same. It was great to be back at Locked & Loaded Bar and Grill, I look forward to the next time. You don’t need to wait for one of their parties to have a great time at Locked & Loaded. The 7th Annual Blue Grass Festival By: Everette “EZ” Short The 7th Annual Blue Grass Festival was a good, homegrown time in the back lot behind Myrtle Beach HarleyDavidson on Saturday, April 8th of this year. with children in a bouncy house and dogs running everywhere, It’s not the usual biker event, but the sun was plentiful, the winds were gentle, and the blue grass tunes were toe tappers from the git go to the end of the show. The music included bands called Subject To Change, Saw Grass, Alan Bibey and Grasstowne, as well as a lively clogging exhibition from All That! Cloggers. The Waccamaw Animal Rescue Mission (W.A.R.M.) was there to represent all the wayward animals that need a home and over $4,000 was raised for the cause, with over 500 souls attending the festivities. I even brought my dog, Harley, who managed to leave his mark on Sheri Gibson’s gorgeous shoes. Sorry if Harley also leaked on anyone else, but that means he likes you. While we’re on the subject of MBHD, let me tell you about two programs that they have that might just be right up your alley. First, if you wanted to come to the Myrtle Beach Bike Week Spring Rally, but your bike is down or you don’t have one right now, then check out the MBHD rental program. 5th Annual Blue Ridge H-D Bunny Run Story and photo by Alan Dockery The Saturday before Easter, a couple hundred bikers gathered at Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson in Hickory, NC, for the 5th Annual Bunny Run benefitting the Sipe’s Orchard Home. Theirs is a long-time, wellloved organization running a great facility for children and young adults. Under clear Carolina blue skies, more than 150 bikes left for an escorted ride to the home. Lance Hubel led the way on his Tri Glide pulling the Easter Basket. Cindy Martin continued her role as the Easter Bunny with Riley Marie and Jackson riding along. As they pulled into the Tyndall Center parking lot, some of the families were there to greet the riders. The Easter Bunny sat with all the kids for photos and to give out baskets. Bikers unloaded the trailer of things we donated to the home. Sipe’s Orchard Home provides several services to people in need. The Houston Transitional Living Center offers a residential, co-ed program for youth ages 16-21 who do not have the financial, academic, emotional, or behavioral skills for inde-

pendent living. The North Carolina Pre-Kindergarten classrooms in the Tyndall Center provide educational programs for at-risk four year olds to ensure success later in school. Huckleberry Summer Camp takes place on the hundreds of acres around the home. “Wow, is all I can say,” commented Steve Amari, Blue Ridge H-D Marketing Manager. “Every year I hold my breath wondering if we are going to have any bikes show up? Will the City of Hickory give the permits I need to have this? Will Hickory PD remember to show up? They forgot one year, but when I called they came here and we only left 3 minutes late. Will I have enough food and drinks?” “Well, all those questions were answered Saturday the 15th of April when the largest group of riders we have had for the Bunny Run to benefit Sipe’s Orchard Home were in our parking lots. Over two hundred riders and just over 150 bikes rode from Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson to Sipe’s Orchard Home. All that worrying paid off when I pulled up and saw the wideeyed look of amazement on the faces of the kids. It is something you have to see to appreciate.” “I really have to thank a group of people for helping make this the best Bunny Run ever: Cindy the ‘Bunny Lady’, Helen Bowman, The City of Hickory, Hickory PD, Attorney Jason Taylor, Iron Thunder, The Catawba Valley HOG Chapter, and specifically Larry and Carol Lloyd for cooking such great burgers and weenies.” “We’ll see you March 18, 2018 for the 6th Annual Bunny Run,” Amari concluded.

By: Rick Gammons Most people around know about Archdale Drive Thru (AKA Joe’s Pigg Pen) on South Main Street in High Point, NC. The drive thru is an institution around the area, although some of its history was not so good. A couple of years ago, Joe Pigg acquired the building and completely redid the inside. The coolers along the back wall were removed and the wall was repainted with the “Pigg Pen” theme. The bar was extended and there is seating throughout. There is still enough room to have a pool table. So, you know what a good ole’ bar is, right? Then come on by and check it out. The Drive Thru is a biker bar. There are plenty of other people there too, but Joe caters to the biker. Friday night is Bike Night. It is a good night to have it because the weekend just started and everyone is looking for a good time. Bike Night includes DJ Tim Wood playing whatever you want to hear. I have tried to stump him with lesser known musicians, but, so far, he has trumped me every time. And it doesn’t take long for the dancing to break out.

Archdale Drive Thru has a party atmosphere. All of Joe’s crew have a good time and they want to be sure you do, too. Sometimes the bar just roars with laughter. It’s just that kind of place. Come down to Archdale Drive Thru (Joe’s Pigg Pen) at 2908 South Main Street in High Point, NC and meet Joe, Shorty and Stacy (bartenders) and the rest of the regulars. Bros & Bro-ettes As I was sitting in the holding room at the hospital waiting on them to come and get David and take him to the operating room, I was listening to the people in the area beside of David. The lady was going to have some kind of brain surgery and they were talking and laughing and cussing, and I thought do they really know what could go wrong? I said a little prayer for her and the other lady on the other side of David who was having the same kind of surgery, for the Lord to guide the doctors’ hands and everyone else involved in the procedure and for the surgery to be a success and for a speedy recovery. Also for the Lord to wrap His arms around them and let them know He was there with them. I wasn’t worried about David’s surgery, I had a peace about it and the Lord told me everything was going to go fine because He had it. We go about our day to day routine and never know what we will face. BUT if we know Jesus, we don’t have to face it alone. Have you ever been in a situation that you had absolutely no control over? No say so whatsoever in what’s happens, but you know everything is going to be ok? That’s what you feel like when you have a relationship with Jesus Christ. You have the peace and know everything is going to be alright. Hebrews 13:5 says: “Let your conduct be without covetous-

ness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you’”. I don’t know what you are going through or facing, but I know one thing for sure. It’s a whole lot easier facing stuff with the Lord on your side and having a relationship with Jesus Christ. If you want that peace, all you have to do is pray and ask God to give you the peace and have the faith and trust that comes with a personal relationship with God as your Lord and Savior. All you have to do is pray the prayer below and really mean it and confess with your mouth and receive the Lord Jesus Christ today and began a relationship with Him. JJ’s Watering Hole Poker Run For Jimmy V. Foundation By: Rose and Lloyd On March 26th, JJ’s Watering Hole held a poker run for The V Foundation For Cancer Research. Jeff and Jean Cozzens’s were approached by Kevin from Applebee’s in High Point to help them raise money for the foundation. Every year Applebee’s raises money for this worthy cause, they knew the bikers would help in any way. The Jimmy V. Foundation for Cancer research founded in 1993 by ESPN and coach Jim Valvano with one goal, to achieve victory over cancer. The foundation has awarded over 170 million dollars in cancer research, with grants nationwide. Thanks to endowments funded by generous donors 100% of all donations benefit cancer research. The day was beautiful, and the bikers came out for the cause. Kick stands up at 12:30 with a ride to Sawmill on Market Street, then to Double D Burnout Saloon in Kernersville. There were approximately 27 bikes with Billy Wren and Jeff Cozzens leading the ride. The blockers did a great job. Back to JJ’s for music by DJ Jason, fun, food, the dice roll, and 50/50. Samantha Tilley won the dice roll, and gave back to the cause. The 50/50 was also given back. It was a great ride for a good cause. I had a few minutes to talk to Jeff and Jean Cozzens, this being the first of many benefits already in their calendar, I was interested to know what got them in the bar business. Seems Jean’s grandmother had always wanted to have a bar, which she was never able to do, so Jeff wanted her granddaughter to live her dream. This was just the first of many events that I feel they will put their hearts into, and as bikers, they will always have a huge support group.

By Kris Weiss March 7th was the beginning of another great riding season and it has started at Sammy’s Tap & Grill. Capital City Bike Nights is in full swing and has a new location. Sammy’s has pulled out all the stops by serving the riders with a large, friendly staff, tasty food, a wide open space with large garage doors that open to the great outdoors, countless T.V.s and even a sprawling game room. The bike night was highlighted by a popular, local rockabilly band, Hearts and Daggers. The four guys that make up the band brought an infectious energy to the crowd that lured many bikers to the dance floor. The parking lot started filling up even before the official start time of 6 pm. Riders from across the county and beyond rolled up in pairs and groups alike. They rode up on Harleys, Ducatis, Yamahas, and more fanning out across the parking lot with the backdrop of the restaurant’s stunning sign and multiple garage doors with patrons seen eating and hanging out. A lot of the Ray Price staff were there including the dealership’s namesake, Jean Price. They were visiting with the different riders and enjoying the music. Some were even spotted

Hometown Harley-Davidson Open House And Swap Meet By: Johnny Reb April 15th was the day for Hometown Harley-Davidson to have their bi annual swap meet and open house. As always, they pulled out all the stops. There were plenty of vendors on hand with everything from almost new MotorClothes to some vintage parts. Hometown themselves had demo rides on all their 2017 models. If you ever wanted to feel the smoothness and power of the all new Milwaukee 8, this was your chance. I decided to take a stroll through the store and, man, was it crowded, with everybody getting some great deals on new bikes, and Genuine Harley-Davidson accessories! The girls at the MotorClothes section were so busy I didn’t even get a chance to say hey to them! So, Dakota and Tammy keep up the awesome work! Chris Riley, the GM, was busy making sure everything was going the way it should be. That man has stuff squared away! Of course, it’s my opinion that Sarah probably has a lot to do with that, too!

I went back and saw that the Technicians were all at their lifts, not one having a chance for a break. It was one rolling in after another! Gary, the Service Manager, had his guys running like a fine-tuned machine. No messing around, customers truly come first when it comes to their service department. Leslie and Russ, sign the bikes in and check them over when they are finished. Like I said many times before, Hometown HarleyDavidson is a class act. Going back outside and checking out some really cool bikes that were lined up, I ran into a bunch of friends and we passed the time looking at parts and checking out some nice scoots. It was great to see Paul from the Dragon Slayers MC, and my old friends Bubba and Jager from the Ghost Riders MC Lenoir Co. It was my first day in the wind since my wreck and I was winding down so I said my goodbyes and rolled out. It was another success for my good friends at Hometown HarleyDavidson. The 27th Annual Dicky Martin Mad Bunny Run

By: Everette “EZ” Short Apparently, 27 years ago, Dicky Martin, the mad scientist of custom built, bad ass, street machines since the middle of the last century, got an idea to put slide into a full white bunny outfit, complete with ears and a cottontail, while he chewed and smoked on a giant cigar, every Easter Sunday and ride aimlessly from location to location with no idea where the next stop was, while his buddies followed him in what he deemed The Bunny Run. The idea was an instant success and has stuck around, evolving, and growing in numbers, ever since. We started off this Easter Sunday extravaganza on the front lot of Dog House Donny’s Saloon, hosted by Don “The Dogfather” Emory himself, at 9 am, with an excellent FREE breakfast, a professional DJ cranking the tunes on an outdoor mega-sound system, and a killer Bloody Mary buffet. By noonish thirty, the crowd was restless, revved up and the giant rabbit, that is Dicky Martin’s alter ego, was breaking a sweat in the sunshine. When he fired up his megaphone air-siren, everyone ran to their bikes like kids coming out for recess.

Going up the #31 to Little River, the group of an estimated 350+ bikes made a wild, steel snake that stretched out in two lanes for over 2 miles. Keep in mind that no one, but the Bunny, knows where any of the stops were going to be, but at the end of the #31 lay the 22 acres of a biker’s field of dreams that is Harley’s Roadhouse. The crowd immediately descended on their two bars like locust in search of a fresh field. Liquor drinks, shots, beer, wine and water flowed fast and their magnificent bartenders never flinched as they moved the crowd to feverish “Hell, Yeah” shouts and yipping cat calls. Good job, everybody and a special thanks to Chris for having our well-mannered, but loud crowd of Vikings in his bar, his huts, and every tree in the yard. When the megaphone let out it’s screech, the crowd was on their horses and headed down to The Swingbridge Saloon, quickly filling up all the parking, every inch of the main bar, and crowding among the picnic tables at the outdoor Tiki Bar. Be sure to stop by and thank Jeff Long’s magnificent crew for putting up with complete chaos. After a furious round or three of beers, wine, shots, and drinks,

the crowd had destroyed the free hot dog table, complete with fixings and beans. When the air-raid siren went off without warning and it was down King’s Highway we went roaring through traffic to find The Backyard Grill in North Myrtle Beach. This place is huge, the food is excellent, there’s a row of pool tables in the back, the staff is purely professional and the view out the back is off the hook. The bar filled up quick and many of us retreated to the grassy hills out back that look over the Intracoastal waterway. It was a beautiful view, on a gorgeous day and some of the best people on Earth sharing a minute, before Dicky had that damn siren going again. We wound our way South to Remedies, and it was a packed keg of madness inside. The wait staff moved quickly, but we had gathered even more bikes and thirsty souls by the time we got there. It seemed like a heartbeat before we were on our way to our final stop at Patty’s Dew Drop Inn, where the owners, Patty (the first woman inducted into the SC Biker’s Hall of Fame) and her husband, David, who had ridden with us all throughout the day, got in the mix with their arms in the ice. Their army of minions served up delicious free food, drinks, wine, shots, sodas, and water. It was like going to your favorite relative’s house for Sunday supper. Just before dark thirty, the ride started slipping away, but it wasn’t over yet, as we found out at the after party at Barnacle Bills Rum and Raw Bar. Most of us got there too late for the

adult egg hunt, but there were tables of free food, live music, and people you haven’t had a chance to sit with on the front porch. All in all, there were no incidents, no accidents, except for the hard fall on the blacktop while trying to push start a motorcycle (bounty and duct tape were administered on the scene) and, best of all, there were no attitudes. 1942 Harley WR Racer

Story and photo by Alan Dockery This is a story I have to tell since I wound up playing a small part in the history of this old race bike. Y’all know dirt track racing with cars and motorcycles goes back a long way in Carolina history. Last month we watched the latest 2017 HarleyDavidson, Indian, and import flat trackers fight it out on the Dirt Track at Charlotte. One of the old bikes on display out front has more stories than I could ever tell. Here is one of them. I first saw #39C, a 1942 WR HarleyDavidson Race Bike, at the Antique Motorcycle Club of America Southern National Meet at Denton Farm Park in 2014. It was just another old race bike on a weekend when the theme was race bikes. Well, a couple weeks later I met Craig Burch and this story began. “We were at the Rockingham Harley Drags the last weekend of May 2014,” Craig said. “I had seen some photos a friend took at the AMCA Denton show and saw the bike I was looking for. He didn’t know who had it. So, when I saw you, the Carolinas’ Full Throttle photographer, I figured you had seen it. You did and knew who had it and where. I had been looking

for that bike since 1983 when it got sold out of the family.” Craig was in the staging lanes getting ready to drag race. So, we didn’t talk for more than a minute and then he was roaring down the drag strip. We looked for each the rest of the day. A mutual friend got Craig my phone number and I hooked him up with the new owner, Rick Allen. Eventually, Craig was able to buy the bike he should have had 21 years ago. This machine is special to Craig and all old race bike fans. Not just because it was raced by his uncle Clarence Burch, but because this is a rare old bike. Clarence probably bought the WR new or nearly new. It ain’t a stripped street bike. Number 39C was built from the factory as a race bike. No lights nor accessories. The engine has lots of special touches inside. It is stronger and makes more power than the street 45 inch engines. In 1942 that Flathead motor made more than one horsepower per cubic inch. At the time, most others made a half horsepower per cubic inch. Continued On Page 84

“As far as I can tell they made three different WR versions,” Craig said. “There were Flat Track, TT, and Daytona versions. The TT had a front brake and front fender. The Daytona had larger gas tanks and separate oil tank.” But #39C is rare for more than just surviving racing all those years. By 1942 most motorcycles were going to the military as the country fought WW II. “I had a conversation with a Harley-Davidson rep when researching this bike and he said there were probably only 1,000 motorcycles or less sold to civilians after the war started. Everything else went to the war effort,” Craig said. During the war, racing of all kinds was shut down. This has to be one of the last race bikes built and sold at the time. 1942 was the first year for the WR. Harley only built 36 that year. They didn’t make any more for a few years, resuming production after the war in 1946. The WR stayed in production through 1952. Clarence raced #39C all up and down the east coast just like it was intended to. From local races at Bowman Gray Stadium, Greensboro, Richmond, and such to Florida and up north. He raced stock cars, too, and was known to run both a car and WR at the same event. I sure wish I had a photo of him towing the 1940 Ford race car behind his 1939 Ford with the WR attached to the rear bumper of the race car by its front axle. Uncle Clarence passed away in 1983 when Craig was 21. “My Aunt was disabled and I was working on that side of town so I stopped by for lunch often”, Craig said. “A few months after he passed away I was in the shop and it had been

cleaned out. Her son in law had sold everything including another 80-inch Flathead.” Craig had no idea who it was sold to nor where. The bike was gone. “So, I started asking people in the bike community if they had seen it.” The bike had gone to a guy in Hillsboro. It passed through a few more hands before ending up in South Carolina more than 20 years ago. Number 39C had been hidden away in garages and shown once in a while. Once Craig and I talked I told him the bike is at the American Classics Motorcycle Museum in Asheboro, NC. “Soon I rode down to meet with them verify it was Uncles Clarence’s bike,” Craig said. “It was. Ed Rich and I had a good discussion. He indicated it was a rare bike and they wanted to keep ownership at the time. I left my info and said if they ever planned to sell it, I wanted it. My goal was to get the ownership back in the family. It’s a great museum piece and I would be glad to work out a deal to leave it in their museum. I’d want to take it out for shows once in a while when they have race bikes.” Rick Allen is one of the museum owners who was critical in saving #39C for us all to enjoy here in the Carolinas. “R.L. Jones had owned the bike for 28 years,” Rick said. “He was talking about contacting some Japanese collectors to see if they would be interested in it. We stepped up and bought it since we knew it would be gone.” Once bikes like this go overseas they don’t usually get back to America. “We learned the history of Clarence racing it in NC and knew it was a special bike”, Rick said. “We took it to Denton since the theme was race bikes. Craig came to the museum to ask about buying it. We told him we paid a lot of money for it. Made a deal where Craig owns it and leaves it at the museum. There it is safe; the public can enjoy and he can take it out to show when he wants.” Rick is as good an expert on old motorcycles as anyone and he says it is original as raced. It appears to be original paint, never painted over. Only thing is the carburetor has been changed to a Linkert. Which is what the AMA required them to run on that bike. Old #39C can still throw mud clods, too. “I rode it last year just to let it breathe and run around a little and make sure it was still ridable”, Craig said. “This past October the Occoneechee Speedway Group asked me to come up there for an event. The old speedway is not used and over-grown. But they cleared it enough for us to run some exhibition.” The next time you see 1942 Harley WR #39C on display at an event stop and think about the racing stories that machine was part of.

8th Annual Officer Down Memorial Ride By: Johnny Reb Hey everyone! Man, it is great to be back. After my incident of going over the high side, I am back to work and ready to show y’all why The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is the best in the business! April 8th was the day and Hometown Harley-Davidson was the place to be for some awesome biker brotherhood. The event was the 8th Annual Memorial Ride Officer Down Memorial Ride. When me and my wife, Vanessa, AKA Attitude, pulled in we were immediately met by Dean James, the Quartermaster for the Blue Knights MC. Dean who was also taking pictures gave us the rundown of the day’s events. He said we needed to get up with the Pres, Eric Lemon. Now Eric is a great guy and took on this responsibility with gusto! He and his brothers had everything running smoothly. The sign-up booth was getting the job done getting everybody registered and the first 100 riders got a free t shirt. When you signed up you got a roll of paper that listed an officer who lost his life in the line of duty. The ride was 40 miles and ended with lunch at the Mayflower restaurant. Before leaving, the Pledge Of Allegiance was recited, and the Chaplain blessed the bikes and the riders, and said a prayer. Trophies were handed out, with the furthest rider coming from Baltimore! Youngest rider was the ripe old age of 23. The oldest rider was a member of the American Legion riders and he is 79, and going strong! Now the chapter that had the most riders present was the Christian Motorcycle Association, they had 11 members present and accounted for. A real highlight of the day was a beautiful plaque that was presented to Hometown Harley-Davidson for all their support. Chris Riley accepted the award for Hometown. He truly represents the giving and caring spirit that I have found Hometown Harley-Davidson to be. As usual I like to close out with all the MC’s present, if I have missed anyone no disrespect intended. VEMA was there and I want to list the great brothers that I met, Boston, Colonel, Krazy, Stitch, and Psycho. The Blue Knights MC, and Christian Motorcycle Association. Attitude and I had a great day and met some great people, I am so glad that the rally season has really kicked off! This is Johnny Reb Out!

A mechanic was removing a cylinder-head from the motor of a Harley motorcycle when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the garage “Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?” The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and said, “So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I make $39,675 a year, a pretty small salary and you get the really big bucks ($1,695,759) when you and I are doing basically the same work?” The cardiologist paused, smiled and leaned over, then whispered to the mechanic, “Try doing it with the engine running.”

How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?” The old lady replied, “Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the paint on top of the bucket, and I’ll hold the chickens.”

President Trump invited the Pope for lunch on his mega yacht, the Pope accepted and during lunch, a puff of wind blew the Pope’s hat off, right into the water. It floated off about 50 feet, then the wind died down and it just floated in place. The crew and the Secret Service were scrambling to launch a boat to go get it, when Trump waved them off, saying “Never mind boys, I’ll get it.” The Donald climbed over the side of the yacht, walked on water to the hat, picked it up, walked on water back to the yacht, climbed aboard and handed the Pope his hat. The crew was speechless. The security team and the Pope’s entourage were speechless. No one knew what to say, not even the Pope. But that afternoon, NBC, CBA, ABC, MSNBC, and CNN all reported, “Trump Can’t Swim!” Motorcycles are better than women because.... If you say bad things to your Motorcycles, you don’t have to apologize before you can ride it again. A farmer stopped by the local mechanic shop to have his truck fixed. They couldn’t do it while he waited, so he said he didn’t live far and would walk home. On the way home, he stopped at the hardware store and bought a bucket and a gallon of paint. He then stopped by the feed store and picked up

A man, while playing on the front nine of a complicated golf course, became confused as to where he was on the course. Looking around, he saw a lady playing ahead of him. The Presbyterian church called a meeting to decide what to do about their squirrels. After much prayer and consideration, they concluded the squirrels were predestined to be there and they shouldn’t interfere with God’s divine will. At the Baptist church the squirrels had taken an interest in the baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a water slide on the baptistery and let the squirrels drown themselves. The squirrels liked the slide and, unfortunately, knew instinctively how to swim so twice as many squirrels showed up the following week. The Methodist church decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God’s creatures. So, they humanely trapped their squirrels and set them free near the Baptist Church. Two weeks later the squirrels were back when the Baptists took down the water slide. But the Catholic Church came up with a very creative strategy. They baptized all the squirrels and consecrated them as members of the church. Now they only see them on Christmas and Easter. Not much was heard from the Jewish synagogue; they took the first squirrel and circumcised him. They haven’t seen a squirrel since. An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening of religious service, when she was startled by an intruder. As she caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables, she yelled, “Stop! Acts 2:38!” [Turn from your sin] The burglar stopped dead in his tracks. Then the woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar, “Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a scripture at you.” “Scripture?” replied the burglar, “She said she had an axe and two 38’s!”

By: Rick Gammons Trax Tavern in Thomasville has been open for two years. As a matter of fact, they celebrated their second anniversary last weekend. I remember it well because Peggy and I were there the day before they officially opened. We just happened by and saw a buttload of motorcycles parked all around this place. Funny thing to see this many bikers at a new tavern not yet open, Rusty and Jana have one of the best Taverns in Thomasville, older building, long and thin, but covered with character. Good atmosphere to be in. There are older men and women and younger ones too. Everyone gets along. Now, on Sundays, Trax has Biker Day. There are usually bikes there every day, but Sunday attracts additional motorcycles and others who are looking for somewhere to hang for a while. Peggy and I stopped by last Sunday. When we arrived, there were only about ten people in the place. Within the hour, the sound of motorcycles rumbled through the downtown buildings as more bikers began showing up. Next thing you know the Tavern was full. Now that â&#x20AC;&#x153;riding seasonâ&#x20AC;? is in full swing, drop by Trax Tavern and check them out. Downtown at 46 E. Main Street, Thomasville. Russell Rides With Us... Always

By: Everette “EZ” Short On Sunday, March 5th of this year, I woke up to seeing pictures of my good brother, Russell Harris, rolling by on both of my computers and I thought, “I gotta call and get in a ride with Russell,” but that day went into its typical frenzied spiral, while life intruded with its demands. That afternoon, when I walked into several local hangouts, I got the news that he had left us in his sleep. Later that month, on Saturday, the 25th of March, 51 bikes and over 100 living souls, met early at Patty’s Dew Drop Inn for a daylong celebration devoted to the life of a very beloved man, who had become family to us and lived life like a legend. Although Russell Coleman Harris Sr. was born on September 11, 1956, it wasn’t until many years later that most of us met him. As a proud veteran of The United States Army, he served as an RTO E4 technician and became a man of many talents. Russell always had a smile on his face that could light up

any room, a good old corny joke to tell that would always lead to a wildly embellished story that held your attention all the way to the punchline. He would sneak up, grab you in a great big old bear hug and freely tell you that there ain’t nothing so bad that a half dozen Irish Car Bombs and a bucket or two of beers couldn’t cure. Russ retired last year and would disappear from view, but never wandered far from our thoughts or hearts. Lately, he had spent a some of his time with those who needed him, helping families that had endured storm and flood problems at the beach, befriending children with books, movies, and his stories of how everything was going to be alright, even when it looked pretty bad. I don’t ever remember Russell being down or any time or when he didn’t have an ear to ear grin on his face. At his wake, Liam, a young man whom Russ had shared books, movies, and time with, wrote and read this poem about him for his service, called He Showed Up. The last four lines read, “When I needed inspiration, he is where I looked. From Baptisms to Birthdays, to yelling out Jiu-Jistu plays. As difficult as it may be, I know you’ll always be with me.” Our ride left Patty’s Dew Drop Inn at around 12ish that day and we wound north in a roar that would’ve made Russ proud to get to Harley’s Roadhouse in Little River. The beer was cold, the service was awesome, the food was just right, but our time was short as we got back on the trail to Barnacle Bills in the heart of Downtown Myrtle for a quick few shots, before taking it all down to Suck, Bang, Blow for a fresh minute or two. Finally, with the sun at our backs, we returned to Patty’s for food, prizes, a LOT of drinking, more than a few Irish Car Bombs, as well as bucket full of some bittersweet memories and story telling about a great man, who still rides with us in our hearts and minds. The 5th Annual NC Sandhills Bike Blessing By: Jody and Pam Shotwell The NC Sandhills Bike Blessing hosted annually by Freedom Biker Church in Fayetteville and held on the first Saturday in April is always a great event. It was established five years ago to reach out and to pray for the safety of those in our community that ride and anything else that is going on in their life. All the volunteers met at 6 am at Freedom Biker Church for breakfast prepared by the church’s cooking team. French Toast, sausage, coffee, and juice were served. Our pastor, JD Tew, opened up in prayer, gave out assignments and let the fun begin! We were blessed with perfect motorcycle weather. It was a beautiful Saturday morning with the temperature starting out mid-fifties and climbing to the low eighties. Rolling Thunder NC Chapter 1 lead a ride of over a hundred bikes. The ride started at 9:30 am, departing from Fort Bragg Harley- Davidson, riding country roads to FBC-Fayetteville just in time for W W W .T H E G A R A G E A T R AY P R I C E . C O M

the 11:00 Bike Blessing kick-off. All 35 vendors were set up on the church property when the people started showing up, on bikes and in cages. Some of Fayetteville’s motorcycle shops which included Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson, Mutt Cycles, Flip My Cycle and Southernboy Baggers brought some “Big Boy Toys.” There were a variety of other vendors selling products including leather accessories, motorcycle parts, hand-made knives, and biker jewelry. Sam Adams with Mac Tool Truck was there for the gear heads and Camping World had a couple toy haulers setup for those on the move. At 11 am Pastor JD Tew welcomed everyone to Freedom Biker Church. The 5th Annual NC Sandhills Bike Blessing was ON! Events included our very own D.J. Scott James, door prizes, live music, lunch, and most importantly prayers for bikers and their bike. Colonel Larry McCarty prayed for our military (vets, active duty, and those deployed and their families), and then JD lead the main prayer for everyone on the grounds. Afterward the parking lot was buzzing with FBC prayer warriors praying for the bikers and blessing their bikes. A concert by Rockie Lynne and his band provided quality entertainment and he gave his testimony during his performance. The church band, “When Forever Comes” played next on the stage. The local food truck, R-Burgers served hot dogs, hamburgers, and french fries while Freedom’s Cooking and Home teams provided BBQ sandwiches with chips. For those needing a chill fix, Kona Ice Truck provided many flavors of shaved ice and ice cream. Each person received a ‘free’ packet which included a Bike Blessing dog tag key chain with a Bible Verse (1 Chronicles 16:11), which says “Search for the Lord and for his strength; continually seek Him”, a helmet sticker and tickets for some great door prizes. The Grand Prize was a four-night stay at Wyndham Ocean Walk Resorts in Daytona Beach during Biketoberfest in October 2017 donated by Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson and Baker American Cycles. The winner had to be present and everyone had their tickets in hand. The number was called and here comes someone from the very back through the crowd with their hand held high. It was George Sharp from Raeford. Congratulations! There were over 800 motorcycles and approximately 1000 people in attendance. Freedom Biker Church was well represented from other locations in North Carolina including the home office in Clayton and Freedom Hickory. They had blue skies and great riding weather to roll into Fayetteville. What a beautiful day it was with everyone having a great time getting reacquainted, starting new friendships and making memories. We would like to thank everyone who came out and celebrated this event with us. Whether you ride a motorcycle or not, if you need a church where the word of God is spoken truthfully, we would love to be your church. Start making plans now for next year. Benefit Ride For Brandon Lester & Family By: Gary Steelman Saturday, April 1st was a great morning for a ride to help Brandon and his family. Brandon has had multiple surgeries in the last year and has had a bad time of it. STE Powersports and the Red Knights Motorcycle Club NC Chapter 13 put together a ride to raise funds to help Brandon’s family through a trying time. The weather was beautiful and riders lined up at STE, where the coffee was hot and the dounuts were fluffy and sweet. About 35 bikes lined up and at the head were members of Iredell County Sherriff’s motorcycle division to lead the way. The ride was wonderful out through the countryside from STE to Harmony Fire Station. The air was clean and clear as thirty some bikes rumbled and roared at the dairy cows grazing alongside the roadside. Finally, at the fire station a spaghetti super and more sweets awaited the riders. “Sweet Cheeks” auctioned herself off for the day to help raise funds for the family. What was it? $2000 raised? May have been (cough, cough!). After the meal, the silent auction of gift cards and handmade crafts sold and then on to the raffles and 50/50. As the sun set and the winds gathered up it was time to head out for home. Great times with long-time friends and new acquaintances, made the day like a community reunion. The evening set in on another day of brothers living out the brotherhood helping

10th Annual Blessing Of The Bikes, And More By: Wally Wersching On Saturday March 25th, I planned to ride “Miss Vickie” to the Lincolnton Church Of God for their 10th Annual Blessing of the Bikes, and eventually going to the 4th Annual CCIB Bike and Car Show in Boiling Springs, NC. The weatherman said that it was going to be a beautiful day, so I was looking forward to visiting with some old friends while making some new ones, too. At about 9am, the sun was peeking through the clouds so I headed to the Shelby Court Square to visit with a few old friends from the Broad River European Motor Club at the Lily Bean MicroRoasted Coffee House. I always enjoy seeing their old British cars. This time, one of the members brought his great looking Triumph TR3. After we talked in the coffee house for a while, we all went outside to his car to discuss how to synchronize his two carburetors. The little four-cylinder engine is so simple to work on, and everything is out in the open. I left Shelby about 10am heading north on Rte. 150. I stopped at the C. Grier Beam Museum (Carolina Freight) in Cherryville, NC. After I signed in the log, Joe and I had a

pleasant conversation. I gave him a copy of the current Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. He enjoys reading it. He had a couple visitors in the museum that needed his attention, so I said good-by, and left. I continued north on Rte. 150, and followed a motorcycle as it pulled out of the Walmart gas station. I thought that he was going to the Bike Blessing, too. After the road turned to the right, the bike ahead of me turned right, and then went straight. He didn’t turn into the Lincolnton Church of God parking area as I did. The Biker ministry, Driven By Grace, was the sponsor for their 10th Annual “Blessing Of The Bikes”. I really enjoy spending time with the Driven By Grace people. They are all so friendly. After a cordial greeting, I learned that Candy and Danny, the leaders of the ministry, would not be there due to a death in the family. I missed Candy’s beautiful singing. I walked around talking with old friends. Britt, whom I’ve known him for over 30 years, was there. Later in the fall, the ministry holds a bike show in his honor. I saw another friendly couple from another ministry called Carolina Faith Riders. We are always bumping into each other at local events. The last time was at a PGR mission in Fallston, NC. We shared stories about many interesting rides we’ve had. We had a hot dog and soft drink while we talked. Driven By Grace always has great tasting food at their events. I remember when I lived in Chicago, we would all go for a bike blessing, and the priest would come out onto a stage or a place where he could see all the bikes, and then bless all the bikes and riders at once. The Driven By Grace ministry does it differently. Many of the Driven By Grace members gather around each motorcycle with its rider, and pray for him, and

his ride. We were instructed to stand by our bikes, and wait for the group to come for the blessing. That’s when I met my neighbor. He was the bike I followed on the way to the event. I learned that he lived in Cherryville, and was originally from Columbus, Ohio. He had a beautiful top-of-the-line Harley with custom paint with skulls in the blue stripes. We had a very pleasant conversation about the local places to ride. When it was my turn, I was moved by their prayers. I could feel the presence of God as they all prayed for “Miss Vickie” and me to be safe during the upcoming year. I was glad that we were blessed again this year. It seems like there are many bike blessings in the spring. Bikers can use all the help we can get when riding our bikes. It always helps to have God on our side. At about noon, I thanked everyone, and headed back home. Cindy and I went out for lunch at the Italian Garden Restaurant in Boiling Springs, NC. We always enjoy eating there. The food is delicious, and the staff is very friendly. After we finished our meal, we drove a couple blocks down Main Street to the Cleveland County Independent Bikers’ (CCIB) Bike and Car Show, and Hot Dog Cook-Off. There were a lot of custom and classic cars, and bikes. The bike show had the usual Harleys, and custom bikes that all looked great. I stopped to talk with a few friends. I hadn’t seen Chester (Radar) for a long time. We used to work together a few lifetimes ago. I had a stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines to give away. I was going to place them on the registration table so anyone could get a copy. As I walked to the table, people were asking for a copy. I only placed a short stack on the table. We met a few Windjammers at the event. The Windjammers are another motorcycle club based in Shelby. The CCIB and the Windjammers always support each other by attending the other’s events. Then we bumped into Smitty. I hadn’t seen him since the CBA/ABATE Chili Cook-Off. I learned that he came in third. That was pretty good since there were quite a few pots of Chili cooking at the event. After that, we headed home. It was a great way to spend time with friends, and see some unusual bikes and cars.

By: Scott Misner Motorcyclists from the Raleigh area rode to the Masonic Home for Children, an orphanage in Oxford, NC, with a special Easter surprise, donating more than $3,000 in toys, bedding, and everyday hygiene products. One hundred children in need at the Oxford Orphanage received a visit from a group of Easter bunnies in leather on Saturday, April 8, 2017. Motorcycle riders from across the region, including members of Raleigh H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group), took to the streets for the 11th Annual Ray Price Easter Basket Ride to deliver care packages totaling more than $3,000 in donations to youth at the The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford. “We’ve been doing this ride for 11 years now and have a large, committed group of motorcycle riders every year,” said Kris Weiss of Ray Price, Inc. “Everyone enjoys providing the youngsters with a unique Easter experience.” Riders departed from the Ray Price dealership in Raleigh on Saturday morning and delivered special Easter baskets for each youngster that included toys, bedding, and everyday hygiene products. 11th Annual Gaston County CBA Freedom Ride By: Wally Wersching There are many chapters of the CBA/ABATE in North Carolina. One very active one is the Gaston County Chapter. On Saturday April 1, 2017, they held their 11th Annual Freedom Ride. It wasn’t held in North Carolina, but in South Carolina instead. The reason being, South Carolina doesn’t have a helmet law. In other words, helmets are optional in South Carolina. The chapter wanted the participants to exercise their freedom of choice about wearing a helmet. I learned about the run from The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar. Most of the local events are posted there, and they’re posted for free. I left home about 9:15 am because I wanted to get to the starting point about 10 am. The information on the website stated that the first bike out would be at 10 am, and the last by 11 am. I wanted to get there to visit with as many of the group as

possible. I rode south on Rte. 18, and got on Rte. 5 heading south toward York, SC. I turned left onto Rte. 55, and after a few miles, I stopped at the Re.t 55 Country Store And Grill just outside of Clover, SC. There were only a few bikes in the lot. I placed a stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines at the registration table to give to the participants of the run as they registered. I visited with a few of the men waiting for the ride to start. We learned that there would be a main group riding together that would leave about 11 am heading south to Union, SC and Musgrove Mill. After looking at the route, I noticed that there were no bars or taverns listed as stops. Normally, they would have a poker or dice run with stops at bars or taverns along the way. This year they are trying something completely different. The run is an 85-mile ride with the drawing of tickets received at the different destinations. The ride ends at the historic site Musgrove Mill. Musgrove Mill State Historic Site was the site of the Battle of Musgrove Mill, a British victory during the American Revolutionary War, which occurred on August 19, 1780, near the Enoree River, on what (in the 21st century) is the border between Spartanburg, Laurens, and Union Counties in South Carolina. As the time got closer to 11 am, more and more riders came in and registered. While we were standing there, we noticed many other groups of motorcyclists ride by. Rte. 55 has a lot of traffic on a Saturday morning. People were standing around talking, laughing, and greet-

ing old friends. It was a very cordial atmosphere. At 11 am, they started talking about leaving. They asked who had GPS on their bikes because they didn’t want to get lost or make the wrong turn, and drag the thirty or so bikes behind them on the wrong road. They said a brief prayer for a safe ride, and then fired up the bikes. It was a very loud roar. At about 11:15, the road guards went out to stop traffic before the group could leave. It will be hard to keep the group together during the ride because of its size, and the traffic on Saturday.

Eurobike 2017 By: Shannon Rights April 8-9th the 8th Annual Eurobike occurred in Raleigh, NC. This 2-day event is put on each year by Do The Ton Triangle. Do The Ton Triangle (according to their Facebook page) is a group of café racer enthusiasts dedicated to preserving the history, camaraderie and “do it yourself” philosophy of the classic and retro motorcycle and the lifestyle. The festivities kicked off early Saturday morning with a ride into Capital Club 16 for the Earle’s Fork charity breakfast. This annual breakfast is cash only and a portion of the proceeds goes directly to finance Eurobike’s mission. From there, riders could choose from the “spirited’ ride or the “vintage/paced” ride. Each one traveled about 70 miles in a roundabout fashion over to Trophy Brewing Company. There riders could cool off, refresh themselves and BS with other riders. The next stop for the evening was London Bridge Pub for the after ride after party! Let’s just say there were a few who were nursing headaches Sunday morning! Sunday dawned bright and sunny! We were set up in the Historic Raleigh City Market with its cobblestone streets. Do The Ton Triangle had city blocks closed off to allow for display of all the great bikes. Bikes from every imaginable type were on display in the area surrounding City Market. Each street had a different theme such as British bikes, German Bikes, Italian Bikes, and the list goes on. Hearts and Daggers played for the crowd and kept the vibe going! Vendors were all over City Market inside and outside including BikeSafe NC, Moto Motivo, Royal Enfield, Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group, Virginia International Raceway, Vanson Leathers, Avon Tyres, Moto Machines, Screaming Chicken Racing/American Label and Printing, Devolve Moto, Sargent Cycle Products, Klim, Team Powersports, Moto Girl Café, Moto Mark 1LLC, Johan’s Motorcycle Paint,

Tapeworks Graphics, Select Cycle, Acme Moto 2, Simpson Performance Produces, Worse for Wear, 440 Gentleman Supply, Jadus Motorcycle Parts, Sprocket Apparel, Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club, Gypsy Downs, Ray Price Triumph, and Townsend Asset Management. Many of these vendors donated products or services to be raffled off during Sunday afternoon. Do The Ton Triangle added 2 new aspects this year. The invitational Bike Builder Show had people’s choice and judged categories. The list of winners is: Best Café Bike: Rick Young (also 2nd Best in Show), Best British Bike: Charles Campbell, Best German Bike: Emily Banks (Head of the BMW/Moto Guzzi Club), Best Italian Bike: Johann Keyser, Best In Show: Johann Keyser (Owner of Moto Motivo), Ultimate Custom Judged: Tattoo Moto. Do The Ton Triangle also added the bike raffle this year. Raffling off a 1996 Ducati 900 Supersport CR with 6300 original miles. This original bike was checked over by some of the sponsors of Eurobike to make sure it was in great running condition. John Huber was all smiles when his name was announced as the winner! Each year, Do The Ton Triangle chooses a charity to help. This year, InterAct was chosen. InterAct is a local non-profit United Way agency that provides safety, support and awareness to victims and survivors of domestic violence and/or rape/sexual assault. InterAct operates mostly through the support of volunteers and always needs donations of new/gently used women’s and children’s clothing, toiletry items, used cell phones and gift cards, as well as cash donations, all of which are tax deductible. InterAct provide services, all of which are confidential and free of charge, such as 24-hour crisis lines, counseling for domestic violence victims, court advocacy, residential shelter, youth education services, children services and other services to help get women and children back on

Shelby Hill, a Do The Ton Coordinator, said they had raised around $10,000.00 without adding in the amounts from the breweries or Capital Club 16. The weather and camaraderie was exceptional, the rides were without major incident and money was raised to help area women and children escape domestic violence! Fallen Saints Spring Breakout Ride By: Johnny Reb April 8th was the day, and the Heroes Sports Oyster Bar and Grill was the place. The Fallen Saints MC had gone on their ride and Attitude and I caught up with them at their bike show. The bike show was to help raise money for Wreaths Across America. If you hadn’t heard about this charity, then listen up because this is a great cause. The wreaths are shipped fresh from Maine tree farms, in fact my wife, Vanessa, AKA Attitude, was the manager of one of these farms. The wreaths are put on veteran’s graves, and the Fallen Saints MC make sure that veteran’s graves in the Goldsboro area are taken care of. All of the money raised is used for this great cause. I spoke to the President of the Fallen Saints, Ben Ackerman. A passionate brother for Veteran’s causes. He explained to me that the Fallen Saints MC have 8 chapters in 7 states, with 3 more coming soon. Some of them are active duty and some retired. It was a great day for the ride, maybe a little chilly starting out, but ending up with nice weather for the show. There were some frigging awesome bikes showing that day. I know I had my favorite, a ‘71 Shovelhead, lowered and just as slick as can be. Joe is the owner, and he doesn’t just ride ‘em, he builds ‘em! Wow, speaking of building, he built the Best In Show

trophy, too! It was truly a work of art made from old Harley parts, and as kool as can be. Best In Show went to Russ Price’s 2008 Electra Glide Anniversary Edition. It was a really great time and the Fallen Saints MC are a real class act. Thank y’all for the invite! This is Johnny Reb Out!

Oconee County SC Vet-Fest 2017 By: Bill Gallaway Saturday, March 25th was the date for the 9th Annual Vet-Fest. The weather was partly cloudy with temps in the high 70’s. The Vet-Fest is held annually to help support Patriots’ Hall the Veterans Museum in Walhalla, SC. All Veterans are honored during the event and there is always a lot of camaraderie among the participants. I arrived at Patriots Hall at 11:00 to help set up. Other volunteers had already put out the signs to help riders find the start just in case it happened to be their first time attending. Most likely you could follow any motorcycle in the area and wind up at Patriots Hall on this particular Saturday morning. Registration started at 11 am and the first bike out was scheduled for noon. It wasn’t long after I arrived other riders began to show up and register. This year I wasn’t working one of the stops so I got to hang around for the start. It was a good thing since I led a group of riders to Wolf Stake Baptist Church in Seneca, SC where at 12:30 the Lewis G Watkins Detachment of the Marine Corp League were having a ceremony to recognize Oconee County SC’s only Medal Of Honor recipient. U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Lewis G. Watkins (Known to his men as Slim) who gave is life to save his men during the Korean War. President Dwight D. Eisenhower awarded the Medal Of Honor posthumously to Watkins for his “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty” The day’s program was held in recognition of National Medal Of Honor Day designated by Congress to be March

25th. This holiday should be one of our most revered, so it was fitting that the Vet-Fest riders stop and honor one of our own for making the ultimate sacrifice. After the program, I rode to lunch at one of the stops and enjoyed some of the best BBQ I’ve ever tried. After which I did make it back for the awards ceremony that started at 4 pm and participated in the silent auction. Most everyone walked away with a prize of some sort but the real awards went to the veterans that were recognized and to Patriots Hall, which honors our veterans on a daily basis. Tragedy And Rebirth Of A Dyna By: Buzz Tragedy can strike suddenly. It can be painful and you may not know where to turn. For me, tragedy struck one evening as I was washing my bike. That’s when I, literally, uncovered a hole in my gas tank. There had been some signs of a gas leak, but I couldn’t find the source, until now. The good news is, I knew where to turn, I called Chris Collins at High Point Body & Paint. Chris is a biker and has been in the paint and body business for over 10 years and has done a great job on my family’s vehicles in the past. We determined my original tank was too far gone to repair, but I found a new tank online. I delivered the tank to Chris along with my idea for a new paint job. I wanted to keep my bike similar to its original look, but didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to add a little personality to the paint job. I decided on a paint scheme of a black base with blue ghost flames under a Bar & Shield. When the paint job was finished, Chris put my bike back together and gave me a call. I was blown away when I saw the

finished product. Chris absolutely nailed the paint job: mirror finish black paint, beautiful blue ghost flames with multicolor flake, and a silver Bar & Shield. The ghost flames are real low key until the sun hits the flake, then they blow off the tank like

The 44th Annual CBA Spring Swap Meet And Bike Show By: WildThing It was a gorgeous day Saturday, March 25 for the first of two days at the CBA Swap Meet at the Rowan County Fairgrounds in Salisbury, NC. It was a welcome change after a cold snap that gripped the state. Also, this is only the second swap meet at this venue and was a clear success as hundreds of motorcycles poured into the parking lot and cars and trucks filled the field across the street. Thanks to all the CBA members who made sure the pedestrians crossed the road safely and manned the gates for vendors and motorcycles. There was also an uptick in the number and variety of vendors this spring. This is an event that literally has something for everyone. There is always quite an array of new, used, and after-market motorcycle parts, t-shirts, and leather goods to delight the bargain hunter. There were motorcycle attorneys on hand to offer their services to riders, as well as Christian riding groups and Veteran groups all seeking to promote their agendas and a bounce house for the kids. The CBA had a large tent set up in the center of the midway with the stage for the bands and a dance floor. There were live bands cranking out music all day for the enjoyment of the attendees. Later, a huge crowd gathered as they announced the wet t-shirt contest and if you wanted to be up front, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d better use your elbows! Cash prizes were offered for the winners of this gig. To add to the carnival atmosphere, the food vendors, kept their grills hot and the aromas of fried bologna sandwiches, BBQ, and corn dogs filled the air. Inside the pavilion, there were adult beverages available for those who wished to imbibe. One of the things I enjoy most is the camaraderie of the biker community that comes together every spring and fall and wanders the rows of vendors, shopping for that elusive part, and enjoying the entertainment. Thank you, Charlotte CBA, for the effort you all put out to make this show a success every time! Also, we all appreciate the support of Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury and Statesville for helping to ensure its success.
