May is typically a very busy month for riders in the Carolinas. It has always been the month that nearly everyone planned a trip to the beach for the spring rally. Over the past several years, the City Council of Myrtle Beach has made quite an effort to eliminate the spring rally. Notice that I DID NOT say the businesses in Myrtle Beach. I said CITY COUNCIL. The reason that I am making that clear is that I do not want anyone to start talking about how I do not like Myrtle Beach or the rallies that were held there. Nothing could be further from the truth. Actually, I miss the way Myrtle Beach was BEFORE the CITY COUNCIL destroyed one of the oldest motorcycle rallies in the country. These days, it just doesn’t seem right! A huge bike rally has been fragmented and many others have tried to take advantage of the situation by starting up new rallies on the former spring rally dates. Still others, including the Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association have moved their dates and locations. Again, don’t get me wrong. I am not saying anything negative about anyone EXCEPT Myrtle Beach City Council. I think that going somewhere that you (and your $) are wanted is the right thing to do. I just do not understand how so many traditions and businesses should have to suffer because a few choose to discriminate against our form of transportation. I remember a sea of motorcycles at Broadway At The Beach, Myrtle Beach H-D, and the Convention Center. There were days that the traffic was hell and it was difficult to find a place to park. The Dog House North and South were “must” stops as well as SBB, The Beaver Bar, Pooh’s, Swing Bridge, The Rat Hole, Greg’s Cabana and many more like Studebaker’s that are no longer in business made the spring rally great fun to attend. Now the Carolina Dealer’s Association Rally is in New Bern, and they and the City of New Bern have done a great job welcoming the motorcyclists to a new venue. What a difference it makes when the city actually welcomes us! In Myrtle Beach some of the businesses that were hot spots are struggling to continue in spite of the ongoing harassment of motorcyclists by the city, first with the helmet ordinance and lately with a noise ordinance. I know nothing ever stays the same. And I know that everyone must look after their own interests, but I lament the fact that the Myrtle Beach H-D Dealers Association Spring Rally as I knew it is no more. I have many fond memories and thank you all for them. Now it is May and time to get out there and enjoy our passion. Please do it with a reverence for the road and what happens when you have a lapse of respect for what can happen. Also understand that a basic element of motorcycling is freedom and that means the freedom to decide what events you attend and where you spend your time and money. The choice is yours. All I ask is that you take The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine with you, either in your saddle bag or your personal hand held device, where ever you ride. Don’t forget to thank a veteran for that freedom.

I have never been able to think of the day as one of mourning; I have never quite been able to feel that half-masted flags were appropriate on Decoration Day. I have rather felt that the flag should be at the peak, because those whose dying we commemorate rejoiced in seeing it where their valor placed it. We honor them in a joyous, thankful, triumphant commemoration of what they did. Benjamin Harrison 23rd President of the United States of America

By: Mark Infield Bike nights are usually relegated to a slow business night in an effort to raise revenue for the host. Some places do not want to have a lot full of bikers on an otherwise busy night so we do not scare off their “regulars”. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are all candidates for bike nights. At Steel Horse Saloon, Friday night, the first night of the weekend, is bike night. Since we ARE the regulars, this is OUR night, even though every night is bike night at Steel Horse Saloon. At Steel Horse Saloon, there are no other patrons besides bikers. It is a place that was built and is operated solely for bikers. There is no “Play Land” there. It is an adult venue. A biker bar! Did I mention that whenever the doors are up, you can legally smoke in the bar? Hell, Yea! They have great beer prices with $2 cans (25 different brands) and 4 brands of draft beer on tap and they offer those in 12, 16, and 20oz sizes, and 60oz pitchers. They also feature the Steel Horse Saloon’s famous bottomless beer mug where all draft refills are only $1 all day, every day! Stop in on Wednesday when ALL domestic beer is only $1 all day. You can view their beer list at: www.TheSteelHorseSaloon.com. Steel Horse Saloon bike nights also mean FREE food and FREE live music including bands and DJ/Karaoke and there is NEVER a cover charge! Friday, April 9th was actually the 2nd bike night of the year at Steel Horse Saloon. I heard they had one helluva crowd the previous week, but there wasn’t any thing to complain about this week as far as I could tell. DJ Bo Paschal was takin’ requests. He has a really good sound system and can play ANYTHING you want to hear. It was also Mike’s birthday so we gave him some gifts and a complementary lap dance! It came up a shower and some of the newbies tried to out run the rain. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to know it never rains in the bar. The shower passed and the sky was clear for our ride home. I can’t believe how quickly it got so late! Steel Horse Saloon is located at 536 Farragut Street, Greensboro, NC just off Randleman Road at I-40 right next door to Harley-Davidson of Greensboro. Check out www.TheSteelHorseSaloon.com for details on Summer Bash June 18th.

1st Annual Jami’s Wings Poker Run

L-R: (front) Thomas Johnson, Tony Mabry - President of Seven Sabres, Jamilyn Borbas, (back) John Henry Evans, and David Rhoades. By: Arlene Mabry It was a cold and windy (very windy!) day, but over 40 bikes showed up for the 1st Annual Jami’s Wings Poker Run for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, sponsored by the Seven Sabres Brotherhood, MRC from Angier, NC. We left from D&Q Motorsports in Angier around 11am on Saturday, April 2nd. First stop was Aversboro Battlefield in Erwin, NC. From there we rode through the country for a quick stop at Tart’s 50 Diner in Dunn, N.C. and a final gas stop. We ended up back at the Seven Sabres Clubhouse for burgers, dogs, drinks, and fun! Door prizes were awarded, and a 50/50 drawing was held. And, of course, the best poker hand won $50 and the worst won $15. Both winners graciously donated their winnings back to the ride. Jami is an energetic 11 year old who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in October of 2007. Now, after undergoing treatments, she is in remission, but she and her family have become involved with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. This ride is for her and all the other brave children and their families fighting this cancer. We raised over $750 that will go to the Ride For Kids Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Ride held on Sunday, May 1st. For more information about Jamie’s Wings visit the website at www.jamiswings.webs.com. Thank you to everyone who attended or donated time, money, or supplies to make this a success. For more information about Seven Sabres and upcoming rides, visit our website at www.sevensabresbrotherhood.com or on Facebook. Ride Safe!

By: Ally Street AKA “Rebel Yell” Child Liaison of the Gastonia Guardians of the Children. On Saturday, April 2nd, to kick off the month of April as National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness month, 110 riders turned out in support of the 1st Annual CAPA Poker Run. The 76 mile ride sponsored by the Gastonia Chapter of Guardians of the Children started at American Big Twin Cycles on Franklin Boulevard in Gastonia, NC and carried riders to Bojangles in Lake Wylie, SC, a co-sponsor who contributed 10% of their sales between the hours of 11:30 am and 2:30pm to the Guardians of the Children. From there riders went to the Bear’s Den in Kings Mountain, then rode to Crystal’s in Cherryville, and ended the ride at The Homestead where a DJ was on board for entertainment at the closing ceremonies. Phat Phil’s Smokehouse BBQ and numerous prizes were given away to participants. The event was a success and the proceeds were donated to Hope Circle, Gaston County’s Children’s Advocacy Center. HB392 Modify Motorcycle Helmet Requirements

By: Mark Infield Motorcycle Owners Are A Voting Block 180,000 Strong In North Carolina And Can Change Elections And The State Laws Governing Motorcycles. The Democratic Leadership of this state has screwed us for nearly 40 years now, no matter what we try. We tried to force them, no change. We tried helping them, no change, and we tried working the system like they wanted, no change. We have been sleeping with the enemy for too long and it has brought us nothing but empty promises and lies and more empty promises. Contact your representatives NOW and demand passage of HB392 Modify Motorcycle Helmet Requirements Votes Are The Only Thing They Listen To. Send your Representatives a huge message. I think the number of new Republican legislators was a wake up call. If the state of North Carolina had no helmet law or modified the current antiquated helmet law, motorcycle tourism would increase exponentially giving the state more revenue! Lost revenue is bad for North Carolina. Biker bucks are leaving our state and not coming in from other states! North Carolina’s antiquated helmet law delivers millions of dollars to the surrounding states in tourism money. SC alone generates millions of dollars a year from motorcycle tourism. Could North Carolina use that shot in the arm? Most motorcyclists understand that if only 25% of the North Carolina motorcycle riding public went out on a Saturday and spent $30 each, the states businesses would see over $1.3 million in sales and the state gets sales tax, meals tax, and gas taxes generated from all that money spent. That is just one Saturday and most of us spend more than $30 dollars on a day of riding. Why is it that the legislature doesn’t see the forest through the trees when it comes to motorcycle tourism. Think of all the riders from the surrounding states who would come to North Carolina and spend their money if it weren’t for the fact that they would have to go out and buy a helmet to enter our state. The legislature should see what a farce helmets really are yet they will bury their heads in the NHTSA flawed data and listen to the biased NTSB spout off about how helmets are the savior of all those leather wearing types. Sad that some fairly smart individuals can be loaded up with false or misleading information and just toe the federal government, nanny state line for over three decades. What We Need Is Bravery In The Legislature! If the state legislature would allow H392 to see a full vote in the House of Representatives, and we put the pressure on our representatives, I think it might pass and actually reinstate the freedom stolen from the motorcyclist in the late sixties.

The history of our current antiquated helmet bill is the story of the federal government bullying the state of North Carolina into passing a helmet bill. They threatened to withhold highway funds if a helmet law was not enacted and leadership at the time thought money was far more important than freedom. Let’s hope that has changed. Men and women are returning from serving their country only to find that the federal government and the North Carolina Legislature is continuing to surpress the freedom they were fighting to protect. The freedom of choice to wear or not to wear a helmet seems to some a small thing. To a veteran freedom does not come cheaply. Freedom Is Not Free. Ask A Veteran! There are 180,000 registered bikes in NC and over 300,000+ licensed motorcycle riders in NC. THAT IS ONE HUGE VOTING BLOCK! Helmets Don’t Prevent Accidents! Education And Awareness Save Lives! Do you know what the whole helmet argument is about? It is certainly not about safety! It’s about freedom of choice. I remember reading a document called the Declaration of Independence. If I remember correctly it had something in it about all men are created equal and we had the right to the pursuit of happiness. Yet in North Carolina, for the biker, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Today’s North Carolina motorcycle rider has to wear a helmet, no choice, no freedom to choose, no pursuit of happiness for the North Carolina biker. As a North Carolina biker, you are treated differently than auto drivers. They can be killed more frequently and cost more in health care, but WE have to wear a helmet for safety. Fourteen percent of all head trauma costs for motor vehicle accidents are incurred in cars per the CDC. Motorcycle riders account for only 6%, so the social burden argument seems to be that car drivers are the social burden, yet WE have to wear helmets for safety. Let us consider a more concrete example of just and unjust laws. An unjust law is a code that a numerical or power majority group compels a minority group to obey but does not make binding on itself. The North Carolina legislature is content to force motorcyclists (6%) to wear helmets while ignoring car driver and passengers (14%) the category that most of them fall in. This is an example of an unjust law. Political Action Committees (PAC) The medical argument seems to be the other side of the aisle here. When well funded political action committees can get politician’s ears, the average biker is out maneuvered. Bikers in North Carolina have a Political Action Committee of their own – NC BikePAC. I suggest if you want to help, give $5 or $10. If all bikers gave, it would be something to see $1.5 million in the NC Bike PAC war chest to fight unjust laws. It would be even more exciting to see what happened if those funds were used to get helmet repeal passed in NC. Their whole argument is that helmets save lives, yet 99% of all motorcyclist that die in NC have helmets on. The medical Continued On Pg 25

side has well funded, albeit misinterpreted studies, with their view of motorcyclists to back up their argument. A helmet is a rabbit’s foot that gets the credit if you get lucky. We Need Ammunition To Fight This Argument. They have paid lobbyist who do nothing but visit politicians, and pay contributions to politicians to get them to see their way. We have a dedicated all volunteer army to counter them, but unless there is a loud outcry from the motorcyclists in NC, our cause will be lost, again. Supporting HB932 does not necessarily mean that you will not wear a helmet if it passes. It means that you recognize that adults should have the right to decide for them selves what clothing and gear is appropriate for the activities that they engage in. Make a donation and contact your Representatives NOW! Or shut up and enjoy your sweaty helmet this summer. I will send you an “I Ride Full Throttle” sticker for it.

www.edwardjo By: Dana Anthony On Sunday, April 17th, a benefit was held for John “Joker” Wetmore at Ultra Classic Bar and Billiards in Hampstead, NC. Joker had respiratory flu in January of this year that turned into bronchitis. Coughing from bronchitis caused a tear in his carotid artery. During his 10 day hospital stay, part of the blood clot formed in the tear broke free and led to a stoke. As you could imagine, it’s been tuff on Joker and all donations from this benefit will go to help Joker with his medical bills and rehabilitation. Performing at the benefit was The Mason Dixon Band, Jam Sandwich, Kenny Reeves, and The Trainwreck Band, and special guests Michael Gardener and Kyle Garris. Allen, owner of Ultra Classics, grilled a bunch of chicken, and along with the potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, a couple cakes, the grazzins and entertainment were real good for $10 donation! Joker would like to thank all the Bros and Bro etts, who came from near and far, to support him at his benefit. We at Full Throttle Mag hope Joker has a speedy recovery.

Cross Roads Harley-Davidson Reunion

By: Mark Infield On Thursday, March 31st, I got a recorded message on the phone about 7pm telling me about the Cross Roads HarleyDavidson Reunion on April 2nd. I sure am glad that I stayed at work late or I would not have gotten this message! I was somewhat puzzled when I checked the Cross Roads H-D ad and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar and found no information relating to their first big event of the year. Someone in their marketing department really dropped the ball on this one! My real interest, besides seeing all of the staff and the Full Throttle Magazine readers in North Wilkesboro, was seeing Big Mike Griffin perform. I headed up 421 to North Wilkesboro under sunny skies, but there was a mean 40mph headwind blowing. When I got to Cross Roads H-D everyone was talking about the wind and that it had snowed there earlier that morning. I am assuming that the “Chicken Littles” all stayed home because of the weather, but what people that did come out had a good time. The Wilkesboro HOG Chapter served free hot dogs and drinks and Stunt Army put on their stunt show while everyone waited for Big Mike Griffin to take the stage. There were only 2-3 entries in the bike show and I guess that was also due to the weather. My vote went to the 1960 Topper. The Wilkes County Cruisers had some really nice street rods on display. A blue ‘66 Chevelle took the honors, but I am a sucker for red cars and there was a ’59 Chevy 2 door hardtop that I really

liked. Big Mike played and, man, it was good to hear him wail again. Emilie Shantz, whom Mike introduced as “the hardest working woman in the music business” belted out a few tunes, too. Seeing Big Mike again reminded me of The Full Moon Saloon and Cherokee Choppers. Check him out at BigMikeGriffin.com. or on You Tube. As the sun began to set in the west, the temperature began to drop. I wanted to stay and hear Fat Mike and The Thermatones, but I had other plans that I needed to attend to that evening, so I headed back to High Point. It was a great ride home. The wind was at my back and the sound of the bike and the sun on my back almost put me to sleep. The sound of Big Mike Griffin running through my head made it euphoric. I know you have been there. Days like this are what it is all about.

36th Annual Charlotte CBA Spring Swap Meet

By: Mark Infield Saturday is always a busy day at the Charlotte CBA Spring Swap Meet. It doesn’t seem to matter what the weather is like because if it is nasty, people come in their cars and trucks. If it is pretty, they come on their bikes. It is an event that you can enjoy rain or shine because most of it is inside and most of the outside vendors were under two big tents this spring. This event has a buzz about it. People are moving about and talking and there is music, too. I saw smiles everywhere! This spring the weather was damp and windy. I don’t think it really rained, but it was cool, misty, and windy. Inside, it was way different. It was bright, warm, and friendly. There are 4 buildings at The Metrolina Expo fairgrounds that are used and each has a distinctly different atmosphere. The main building has food vendors and the band. The next is full of vendors with tables and display cases. Another is open on both ends and has mostly used parts and motorcycles and the last is where the bike show is located. I saw some really good deals if you were looking for a bike and if leather was your thing, there was no way that you didn’t find it! T-shirts, CBA support gear, and pretty girls were everywhere. The entries in the bike show ranged from a Boss Hoss trike to Vince’s Good As Gold Shovel Head Sportster powered lawn mower with Triumph choppers and classic antiques in between. Rock bottom provided the music and at the end of each day, there is a wet T-shirt contest. Tat is something that we do not write about because it is kinda like you had to be there. Ya know what I mean? The Charlotte CBA Fall Swap Meet will be held on November 12-13. Watch The Carolinas’ full Throttle Magazine for more information. You can also visit CharlotteCBA.org to learn more.

Congress Acts To Reinforce Ban On NHTSA Lobbying By: Sam Hochberg AIM/NCOM Motorcycle E-News Service: NCOM Biker Newsbytes May is Motorcycle Awareness Month across the country, and Congressional lawmakers are introducing a resolution on May 2 to continue current restrictions on NHTSA that prevent the federal transportation agency from lobbying state and local governments to enact helmet laws. The lobbying ban was originally amended into the Transportation Equity Act in 1998, but U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and his House colleagues want to reinforce the prohibitions on NHTSA lobbying and focus the agency’s efforts on crash prevention and rider education. According to the resolution, the U.S. House of Representatives “supports efforts to retain the ban on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s ability to lobby state legislators using federal tax dollars, encourages continued growth in the motorcyclist community, and encourages owners and riders to be responsible road users.” The resolution, similar to a version Sensenbrenner introduced last session, goes on to say that the House “recognizes the importance of motorcycle crash prevention as the primary source of motorcycle safety (and) encourages NHTSA to focus on motorcycle crash prevention and rider education as the most significant priorities in motorcycle safety.”

By: Crazy Lady On Sunday March 27th Tommy Redd and Rob Bilodeau hosted a benefit for David Hamilton. David, who has a long history of diabetes, recently had to have reconstructive surgery on both legs due to a brittle bone disease called Ontogenesis Imperfecta, which is a rare genetic disease. David was adopted so he knows nothing of his family medical history and was unaware that he had this disease. A few years ago he had a stroke that left him paralyzed on the left side. He recovered and went into rehab and while in rehab fell and broke his pelvic bone. He improved and regained most of his left side function. After recovering he did have to go to an assisted living facility until two years ago when he was able to go into public housing and has been on his own ever since. In February he stood up to get out of bed and fell to the floor because both his legs snapped. David was an avid sportsman and a master painter and, although he may not be able to do a lot of the things he use to do, he deals with his issues as they arise. The biker community as well as the music community came together at Bonedaddy’s Hideaway in Raleigh, NC. Many local bands came together to help raise money to help him out. There were musicians like GW Pierce, Walter, Taylor Harvey, Swivel, Bernie Lamb, All My Rowdy Friends, and many more. There was music for everyone. There was a 50/50 drawing and door prizes from Lone star, Outback, Ale House, Scooters, Fat Daddy’s, and Famous Hair (Julie). Barbie, a bartender at Bonedaddy’s, donated two Jägermeister signs. Frank from All My Rowdy Friends donated two t-shirts and a CD, and Ray Price from Ray Price Harley-Davidson donated a shadow box of motorcycles. The total amount raised was $1266. Bear won the 50/50 of a $140 and handed David $70. When I asked David what this meant to him he said, “It brings tears to my eyes to see so many strangers and friends come out to help me”. He would like to thank everyone for putting this together for him and to those who came to help support him in his battle. When Purple, the owner of Bonedaddy’s, went to see David, he said the gathering of both communities made him happier than the money itself.

5th Annual Ride For Legends Helping Legends

Story and photo by: Alan Dockery The last Saturday of March was cool and wet, but that didn’t stop several folks from joining Don Tilley for a little ride. Don gathered folks at Tilley HarleyDavidson in Statesville, NC, for a ride to Memory Lane Motorsports and Historical Automotive Museum in Mooresville. With the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department providing a police escort, Don and the group took off for the 5th Annual Ride with the Legends of Racing. This ride supports the Legends Helping Legends event at Memory Lane and often includes some of the legends. This year Harry Gant, Donnie Allison, and Waddell Wilson, famous NASCAR engine builder and crew chief, made the ride. If you’re a NASCAR fan you should have been there. Memory Lane hosts the event to help and recognize legendary people in racing. The past honorees include Bill Connell, Sam Ard, “Suitcase” Jake Elder, and Rex White. The ride is affiliated with the Old Time Racers Club Medical Fund. This year the money raised went to help recent stroke victim, Harold Elliott, the engine builder for 1989 Winston Cup Cham-

pion Rusty Wallace. Harold was a major part of the racing world for many years and is a dear friend of Don Tilley. He is very well known by all of the racing community and has been an asset to many. It was great to hear racing legends share their stories about Harold and exchange stories about racing history with others. So many of these racing retirees will never be forgotten thanks to this event each year. Alex Beam, owner of the Memory Lane Museum, hosts this event and spending time there is certainly a walk down memory lane for fans and drivers. Legends Helping Legends is open to the public and draws a good crowd of people to meet the more than 50 drivers, team owners, crew chiefs, media members and other folks who made car racing the huge sport it is. The line of race fans seeking photos and autographs stretched halfway through the museum all afternoon. Don Tilley was a legend of racing himself and drove many a racecar before becoming a Harley-Davidson dealer. His grandsons Kyle Pierce and Chandler Levan are now carrying on his legacy in their Tilley Harley-Davidson Race Teams.

The Wall That Heals Starts 2011 Tour In NC

Story and photo by Alan Dockery On the first weekend of April several folks joined me for our Spring Freedom Ride. We had planned to go to the Captain Jack statue in Charlotte, but construction at the site was a problem. So we changed plans and went to honor thousands of Veterans who fought for the freedom of the world and our democratic way of life. The Wall That Heals, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, began its 2011 tour with a stop in Concord, NC. Most of us riding that Saturday are Veterans, so it was a unanimous decision to visit the wall. I’m a retired U.S.A.F. Master Sergeant and have led a few rides over the years to traveling versions of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It was a pretty day with a strong and steady wind as we rode into the park near Charlotte Motor Speedway. Colorful kites darted across the sky. On a high spot in the park was The Wall. The Wall That Heals is a half-scale replica of The Wall in Washington, DC, and sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF.org). Established in 1979, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, promoting healing and educating about the impact of the Vietnam War. Authorized by Congress, its most recent initiative is building the Education Center at The Wall, an underground facility near the memorial that will help visitors discover the stories of those named on The Wall and celebrate the values embodied by all service members who served in all of America’s wars. Other VVMF initiatives include educational programs for students and teachers, a traveling wall replica that honors our nation’s veterans and a humanitarian and mine-action program in Vietnam. “The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC has

been a powerful source of healing and remembrance for the millions of visitors who journey to our nation’s capital each year,” said Jan C. Scruggs, founder and president of the VVMF. “For those who can’t make the trip here, we created The Wall That Heals to bring the benefits of The Wall to them. I am pleased that we have so many community partners this year.” National sponsors of The Wall That Heals include FedEx, Disabled America Veterans Charitable Trust, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, GEICO, and New Century Transportation. The Wall That Heals will be displayed at more than 20 locations throughout the United States this year. In 2011, it will visit several communities in Texas, as well as California, Connecticut, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, California, Indiana and Georgia. The Wall That Heals will be displayed once again in Sturgis, South Dakota, in August during the Annual Black Hills Motorcycle Rally, as a guest of HarleyDavidson. The Wall That Heals is the only Wall replica that also includes a traveling museum and an information center, where visitors can learn more about those lost during the Vietnam War and how to find their names on The Wall. Exhibits feature some of the more than 150,000 items that have been left at The Wall since it was built, as well as items left at The Wall That Heals. The exhibits also feature photos and biographical information on some of the more than 58,000 individuals whose names are on The Wall. Other displays chronicle the history of The Wall and facts about the Vietnam War. Since its dedication in 1996, The Wall That Heals has visited more than 350 locations throughout the United States, spreading the Memorial’s healing legacy to millions. The Pledge Of Allegiance By: Mark Infield* The Pledge Of Allegiance to the United States, which is the official national pledge, is an oath of loyalty to the nation. Although composed as early as in the year 1892, the Pledge only received its official status on June 22, 1942, as a result of the official recognition conferred to it by the US congress. Since then, the Pledge Of Allegiance is sworn by politicians during congressional sessions. All government meetings at locals level and sporting events start with the Pledge Of Allegiance words being recited. State laws also require students of public schools to swear the Pledge of Allegiance. It is expected of every citizen of the United States to know the Pledge Of Allegiance words, in order to be able to express his solidarity with the nation. Pledge Of Allegiance History The Pledge Of Allegiance was first published in the September 8th issue of “The Youth’s Companion”, which was a popular magazine of children at the time, under the title “The Pledge to the Flag”. This was a part of the National Public School Celebration of Columbus Day, which was an event to mark the 400th anniversary of the Columbus Day. After proclamation by President Harrison, the Pledge was used for the first time in public schools in America on October 12th 1892. This set off the tradition of the Pledge Of Allegiance being recited in Public Schools on a daily basis. Pledge Of Allegiance Words - Changes The Pledge Of Allegiance underwent 4 changes. Each time some new words were included in the original form. Francis Bellamy wanted the Pledge Of Allegiance to be short and crisp, with the words conveying the message of loyalty to the nation unambiguously. The original Pledge Of Allegiance words in October 12, 1892 were: “I pledge allegiance to my Flag, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all.” After being set off as a daily routine in public schools since 1892, concern over the usage of the words “My Flag” in the original Pledge Of Allegiance words was expressed in the First National Flag Conference in Washington, DC, held in 1923. The concern was that by that time the immigrant population in the United States had climbed to considerable proportions and use of the words “My Flag” might mean the flag of the native countries of the immigrants. Hence, to remove the disparity, the words “the Flag of the United States” were introduced in place of “My Flag”. Hence, the Pledge Of Allegiance words as it stood in 1923 were: “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.”

In 1924 The Pledge Of Allegiance words witnessed another change when the words “of America” were added. The Pledge Of Allegiance words then read as: I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all. The last change in the Pledge Of Allegiance words was made on June 14, 1954 with the inclusion of the words “under God” as approved by President Eisenhower. The Pledge Of Allegiance as it reads TODAY is: “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all.” Pledge Of Allegiance Word - Meaning We Americans are taught to learn the Pledge Of Allegiance words by rote without being able to concentrate on the emotion that the words want to convey. Here is the meaning of the Pledge Of Allegiance wording: I pledge allegiance (I promise my loyalty) to the flag (to the symbol that stands to represent) of the United States of America (each and every of the 50 states that form the united nation of America) and to the republic (a country where people choose their representative to form the government and represent them) for which it stands, one nation (the flag that stands for one country) under God (there is one Supreme entity for every citizen) indivisible (a country that cannot be divided) with Liberty (complete freedom of life and living being given to the citizens) and Justice (fair treatment being promised by the law of the land) for all (for each and every citizen of the country.) I once saw Red Skelton, a radio and television comedian from 1938 through 1971, perform one of his best-known routines “The Pledge of Allegiance”, in which he explained the pledge word by word on his TV series in 1969. He was a funny guy, but loved America and took this performance very seriously. If you would like to hear a recording of Red Skelton’s performance of The Pledge Of Allegiance go to: http:// goo.gl/wtB85. You can also view the video at: http://goo.gl/ SNtB As I listened, it brought back many memories and I could see myself standing in front of our counsel TV in the living room watching Red Skelton as he performed “The Pledge Of Allegiance”. I hope that you listen or watch, enjoy, and come away with a new appreciation for The Pledge Of Allegiance. * www.buzzle.com/articles/pledge-of-allegiance-words.html * www.winkmartindale.com/thoughts-n-things/page180.html * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_Allegiance

Do You Smell That?

By: Louanne Stanton AKA LouLou One of my favorite things about riding is the smells. On a warm spring day you can smell when someone is hanging the laundry on a line and the breeze is blowing the scent of detergent through the air. You smell the lingering effects of a fire burned out from the night before. You smell an animal that has been waylaid by a fast moving cage. You smell the fresh cut fields and I swear you can smell the warmth of the sunshine! But my favorite smell is when someone has a smoker going and barbecue is in the air. North Carolina is known for its barbeque. We have made it a tradition. And now, that tradition is being implemented to help the Charlotte Vulcan Riders Association raise funds for an important charity event. In March, The CVRA sold tickets to area dealer sponsors, friends, neighbors and family for Boston Butts hot off the grill so there would be money for the cook-off in April and the CVRA would be able to present the host of that event, the Joan Roberts Ovarian Cancer Foundation, with extra funding. Shubey’s Smokehouse is an award winning outfit that has generously shared their talents of cooking barbeque with the CVRA to raise money for the annual Baseball and Barbeque event that transpires at the Kannapolis Intimidators Stadium each year in April. In order for the butts to be picked up by noon on Saturday, the guys started cooking at 9pm the night prior. Prepping and cooking 96 Boston Butts was quite the task, but they stayed up all night and got the task done. By the middle of the night, the air was starting to be filled with the wonderful aroma of barbeque, and by the next morning, the sun came up to see what the great smell was! As people arrived to pick up their butts at McKinney Salinas Powersports, one of the associations’ sponsors, the CVRA had steaming samples out while people were waiting. If they had cooked 20 more, they would have sold them! The raves reviews were encouraging to guys who were running on zero sleep. As the grills grew cold and the day was complete, the Charlotte Vulcan Riders Association drew in a deep breath. Yeah, that is what success smells like. If you are interested in learning more about Charlotte Vulcan Riders Association visit http://VulcanRiders.US/Default.aspx or would like to ride with them, contact Charlie Holcombe at 704-463-0111 or kwiken24@yahoo.com and he will get you hooked up. Fire And Iron MC Station 92 Flight Of Honor Ride

By: Grant What is the “Flight Of Honor” you may ask? In 2004 the “Flight Of Honor Organization” originated in Ohio to take WWII veterans to Washington, DC to see “Their” newly erected memorial. With a crew of small aircraft and 12 veterans it has grown to more than 22,000 veterans who went to Washington all expenses paid to see the WWII Memorial in 2010. Check out www.Honorflight.org for lots of great information or to donate to send the greatest generation to Washington, DC to see it. A flight will leave Charlotte/ Douglas International Airport on May 21st and the public is invited to come out and cheer them off in the morning or for their arrival to welcome them back in Charlotte later that same day. Another Flight Of Honor is departing Piedmont Triad International Airport and you can check them out on “Triad Flight Of Honor” on face book. On April 2, 2011 a newly formed motorcycle club known as “Fire And Iron Station 92” arranged a poker run to raise money for the “Flight Of Honor”. Fire And Iron MC is made up of retired and current firefighters and EMS workers. Fire And Iron has an open enrollment and you can check to see if you’re eligible to join by visiting their web site at www.FireAndIronStation92.com. Around 100 or so bikes and double that amount of personnel went out and about in Cabarrus and Stanley counties. The ride was 90 miles long starting at RideNow Powersports in Concord. It proceeded to Amvets Post 845 in Rockwell and on to the Stanley County Airport with the 235th Air Traffic Control Squadron, where you could take a tour on a small bus around the airport and to the tower. Guard duty was going on and a mass casualty drill all at the same time so you got your money’s worth viewing the entire goings on there. Then the ride traveled on to the Keith Moore American Legion Post 440 near New Salem who had a cool display of racing lawn mowers. These men and women had some of the coolest lawn mowers, minus the decks, that I have seen. Some had V-twin motors with dual exhaust. Man could you have fun in the neighborhood on that thing! The ride ended at Tumbleweeds in Monroe, NC. The band Jinx was playing and Tumbleweeds donated a hot dog lunch and all the trimmings. A silent auction was held and lots of door prizes with a 50/50 drawing. The winner of the 50/50 donated back 90% of the winnings, which I thought was very cool. I’m sorry I did not get his name. The winner of the best hand got race tickets to May 29th Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and the worst hand got tickets to the Bank of America 500 Sat, October 15th at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Not bad prizes at all! After a great day of riding and having a lot of fun Fire And Iron Station 92 raised near $2000 for a kick ass cause. If this ride is an example of what kind of motorcycle club Fire And Iron Station 92 will be for the community, it can only be considered an asset for us all. Contact www.fireandironstation92.com for more info. Thank you to all who showed their support for this ride and our WWII veterans. Remember, it only takes a minute when you see someone wearing a uniform, whether it be fire, police, EMS, military, or a cap that says “Veteran” to say “Thank You”. It always means more than most will ever know. Ride safe, and God Bless the United States of America.

1st Anniversary For Helping Hands Brotherhood RC By: Gypsygirl What an awesome crowd turned out for the Helping Hands Brotherhood RC 1st Anniversary in Duplin County. This group of men and women (brothers and sisters) are truly a wonderful group of people. They started out with a handful of people a little over a year ago in the backyards of Duplin County. They were just a group of folks who loved to ride their motorcycles and loved helping people who sometimes couldn’t help themselves. These things included mowing lawns, installing ramps and small things such as hanging a simple shower bar just so some folks could be a little more independent. Helping Hands RC has been working side by side with the office for the ageing in Duplin County and receives private donations and are welcomed by their community. They have also grown in numbers. I believe they are going to open a brother chapter in Sampson County. These are really wonderful do gooders. There was plenty of food for all! Good gracious! BBQ pigs on the cooker, potatoes, green beans, slaw, and sweet cakes (yum, yum) what a great celebration! The band “Stetson” with Rebecca Williams was rocking the house with a good mixture of music. People were talking, laughing, dancing, and just having a grand time. HAPPY FIRST ANNIVERSARY! I truly wish you many, many, more. Keep on making the world a brighter place! Bike Review: 2011 Victory Cross Country

By: John “DOC” Deal I RODE THE 2011 Victory Cross Country along the back roads, twists and turns of the Triad to test its mettle against our horrendous NCDOT interpretations of “DRIVIABLE” roads. The Cross Country is an attractive bike that draws attention through its smooth and racy lines. This bike even LOOKS fast when standing still, with refined lines and premium craftsmanship, easy to read digital gauges, and two up positioning that favors both driver and passenger comfort. The sound system was more than adequate, and includes emergency weather band alerts, to tell you of impending severe weather, and auxiliary inputs for I pods, GPS units, and a 12v dc outlet on the fairing. Victory also has a large line of available options to customize the Cross Country to meet your touring needs and taste. Victory has raised the bar on cruisers with handling more reminiscent of a sport bike than a bagger in combination with a very smooth and comfortable ride. This bike was as smooth as any bike I have ever ridden! The feel of the brakes were firm and very concise when needed and emergency stops were controlled and sure footed. I ran up and down through all six gears to redline, and power to weight ratio in combination with the luxury feel of the brakes and clutch made me wish I were on the fabled Dragon at Deals Gap. The transmission did feel a bit harsh, but with very positive detents when shifting up or down and I suspect, that the driveline backlash and noise would reduce after a proper break-in period, as the bike I tested only had 2/10ths of a mile on it when I left the dealership. I did try my damnedest to get the floorboards to scrape without success, as the entry and exit lean angles are superb and the bike rides as if it were on a rail. Stopping and starting, again was very smooth, and when demanded the fuel injected 106 inch Freedom V-Twin de-

livered vigorous amounts of controlled power and torque without hesitation. Defined by the engine’s quite smoothness, it was efficient and fun, with good throttle response and fuel economy. I would ride this Victory from coast to coast with no problems. The large hard saddlebags provide almost 25% more storage per side than Harley’s standard hard bags. Any novice rider could saddle up on this bike and ride with confidence. Its balance is reassuring at speed or during slow parking lot turnarounds; I was even able to easily negotiate a u-turn inside the space of a single lane. The seat sits low and would be easy for shorter individuals to manage. I really enjoyed the opportunity to ride the “New American Motorcycle” and would like to thank Shane Wiles and staff and World Class Powersports Victory-Polaris at 2924 N. Main Street in High Point, NC (27265) for the opportunity. They are a top-notch facility with courteous and professional sales and service staff. www.boneyardtavern.com 704-226-9616

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO ENJOY YOUR RIDE By: Mark Infield Junior Needham has been around a while. You might see him at any event that you attend because he goes to a bunch of them. He is also very active in the motorcycle community. Junior serves as the Treasurer of the Randolph County Concerned Bikers Association. At the CBA State Meeting on Saturday, April 16th, Junior was rewarded with a $25 gift card to Lone Star Steakhouse for recruiting more new members to CBA than anyone else in the whole state! I asked Junior if that was $1 per new member and he said, “Not quite!” I was just joking. Junior was not. If you see Junior out and about, give him a pat on the back and tell him he did a good job. He deserves it and I am sure that he will be glad to talk to you about it. Junior is as nice a guy as you’ll ever meet on a motorcycle and he has many a tale to share if you care to listen. Congratulations, Junior. Enjoy!

By: Caroline It seemed like winter did not want to let go this year. After a warm weather tease last month, it was back to the cold, rain, and snow. No wonder by April everyone was ready, no, praying for some riding weather. April 3rd, delivered one of the most beautiful spring days we have seen to date. James and Jim at Just Hawgs Annual Spring Ride yielded a record number of folks ready to take advantage of the day. James Deal led 50+ bikes through a scenic countryside that made you thankful you had a bike, and able to come out to ride with a great bunch of people. Meanwhile, Jim Robinson made sure the food was ready for everyone when we returned back to the shop. The Spring Ride is just one of many ways that James and Jim like to show their customers (and potential new customers) that they are truly appreciated at Just Hawgs. These guys are so knowledgeable, I can’t think of any bike problem that is too complex for them to handle. They also have the best most competitive prices around. Be on the lookout for more events at Just Hawgs this year. You will find them listed in the Full Throttle Cruisin’ Calendar. Or give them a call at 336595-2210. They are located at 5326 C Highway 311 North in Walkertown, NC.

By: Jeanie Hood On Sunday, April 10th there was an Emergency Run For Trudy Nuzum, who unexpectedly fell traumatically ill. The benefit took place at Legends Pub in Fayetteville, NC. Trudy is the wife of the ever so popular and famous North Carolina auctioneer Ken Nuzum. Ken donates his time and talent to help at all the benefits around Fayetteville, when there is an auction involved. He is also the auctioneer who has sold the Billy Bass Fish over 8 times to the same rider and could sell a mud hole for a lake! The poker run started at noon and the parking lot was full of bikes and riders. It was a great day for riding, too. Some of us even got a bit of a sunburn, so you know it was good. First stop was the VFW Post 670 then off to Learn To Skydive out of Raeford. Now this was an unusual treat. I’ve watched skydivers before but not within a few feet. I didn’t realize how fast those folks are moving when they hit the ground. Whoosh, is the sound and they are running full speed when their feet hit the ground. Well, except the one guy whose butt slid in before his feet! I was surprised his pants still had the seat in them! These guys are really moving. From there we went to Charlie Mikes and back to Legends where the food was on for those who didn’t grab a burger at Learn To Skydive. A number of groups showed up before the day was over including the Bikers For Bikers Foundation to show their support. When it was over and done with, as usual Legends had out done themselves. Total for the day was over $6500! Now tell me these people don’t know how to put on a benefit, and this was put together in about 3-4 days. Just saying.

By: ChromeDoll Hometown Harley-Davidson of Winterville, NC held their Grand Opening the weekend of March 17-19th. Under new ownership, they pulled no punches holding one terrific Grand Opening. It all began on St. Patrick’s Day with tremendous service sales, sales on new inventory and “a new attitude”! The biggest event was held on Saturday and it couldn’t have been better. We got there somewhere around noon and there were already a bunch of bikers there along with people who came in four wheels. The Street Hawks MC was up serving some awesome chicken and BBQ to benefit the Relay For Life. While everyone was enjoying their food, WXNR (99.5 the X) had a live remote and played some really great rock and roll. Throughout the day, a bunch of Hometown Harley-Davidson gifts were raffled off. They ranged from Harley-Davidson tapestries, to fleece blankets, to t-shirts, and beyond. There was a lot of great stuff given away, just for showing up. As I walked through the dealership to take a look at the HUGE inventory of bikes these guys have, all I could hear was conversations of bikes being sold. There were some really good deals on bikes and believe me people were taking advantage of that. It was, SOLD, SOLD, and SOLD!!! Later on in the afternoon, after the radio station left, the band “Bald Fury” showed up and set up on the flatbed trailer. These guys rocked the house all afternoon with some really awesome tunes. All in all, the day was absolutely perfect and I, personally along with the many folks who attended, would like to give a HUGE THANKS to the entire staff of Hometown HarleyDavidson for such a wonderful time. Best of luck to all of you on the success of the dealership! If you didn’t have the chance to make it to the Grand Opening event, stop by Hometown Harley-Davidson at 2300 Elaine’s Way in Winterville, NC and meet the staff. They are some of the friendliest people and are always smiling and willing to help you. Continue to read The Carolina’s Full Throttle Magazine for future events. Remember, the time is now, the season is here! Let’s get ready to RIDE!

By: Scott Wicker One of the most popular benefit rides each in Alamance County year is the Wegener’s Fun Ride hosted this year by the Outer Limits Saloon in Graham. On Saturday, April 2nd an enthusiastic crowd gathered for a full day of activities to benefit the Vasculitis Foundation, which heads the research for Wegener’s. Granulomatosis, an uncommon disease in which the blood vessels are inflamed (Vasculitis) damaging important organs of the body by limiting blood flow and destroying normal tissue. This event is the largest fundraiser for the foundation in the United States. Many patients with the disease from throughout the South were on hand to support and help with the event. Despite windy conditions and the threat of rain, there were 30 bikes participating with riders coming from as far away as Pennsylvania. In addition to the fun run, there was a silent auction for a lot of unique items and raffles for items including a Big Screen TV. Pat Dodson of Graham won the TV. The winners of the best hand and the worst hand were gracious and donated their winnings back to benefit the event. Event T-Shirts were available as well. Live entertainment and great food greeted the participants once back at the Outer Limits. Over $9000 (and counting), was raised for the Vasculitis Foundation through the ride, 50/50 drawings, the auctions, and through unselfish donations. Danette Anderson, the event coordinator, would like to thank everyone at the Outer Limits for hosting the event. Thanks to everyone at Hurricane Jane’s, Break Zone Billiards, Mark’s Place, and of course the Outer Limits Saloon for their hospitality. A Special Thanks to all the riders that participated and to all the volunteers that helped with the event. Danette would also like to thank all her family and friends that gave their time to help this great cause. Thanks to everyone at the ride for you support and hospitality! Remember! Ride Safe!

By: Mark Infield On Wednesday, March 23rd Last Call Sports Bar held their 1st bike night of 2011. It was shirtsleeve ridin’ weather so Buzz and I headed over their way. When we arrived there were already 8-10 bikes already lined up in front of the building and riders choking long necks as they shot the bull. Man did it feel good to get out of the office and twist the wick on the Road King. I was on a mission, so I bustled on into the bar and got Cynthia to draw me an icecold Millet Lite draught in a frozen glass. I ordered some of their 35¢ wings to take the place of supper. My memory didn’t fail me. They were big and tasty. The crowd continued to build and everyone was enjoying themselves until someone noticed some dark clouds to the north of us. I am not one to jump and run, but it looked as

if it might be the right thing to do, so we headed back towards High Point. We ran through a little shower, but it didn’t even wet my pant legs. Bike night is every Wednesday night, but you do not have to wait until Wednesday to drop it at Last Call. They have live bands every Saturday night, Friday is Karaoke night, and Thursday is ladies Night. They have $2 draft every day, $6 pitchers, Miller Lite buckets (5) for $10 and $1.25 PBR. They have 7 flat screen TVs with DirecTV and 3 pool tables. They are open for lunch, too. Did I mention that Last Call has all ABC permits? Now if that isn’t reason enough to ride on over to Last Call at 1330 National Highway in Thomasville, NC, call me and I will ask your momma if

Bros & Bro-ettes

April showers and now those blooming flowers to mow around! But, I’m not complaining. It’s good to have the warmer weather to enjoy all the rides for this month. Lots of events and special benefit rides are taking place. I hope you can get involved and support your favorite cause, group, or business that advertises in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, and attend the rallies you always look forward to. Yeah, I know gas prices are ridiculous but even the more reason to ride, leave the truck parked and enjoy His wind. And, yes, the cost of food and rooms and everything else has increased, but there are lots of opportunities to enjoy the gathering together of Brothers and Sisters without going broke. Support your local area and events as much as possible. The more you get involved, the more you will see all the good things happening in your community. Brothers are helping downed Bros. Families are helping families. People working alongside each other for common causes makes for good times together and good rides together! It’s not all gloom and doom as the news reports would have you believe. It’s called life and its taking place all around you. You just have to look for the good in people and treat them the same way you like to be treated! LK 6:31 And as you would that men should do to you, do ye also to them. KJV You have opportunities to be a Brother or be a Sister. Don’t let them slip by. You have opportunities to be a neighbor.

Don’t let them go by. You have opportunities to drop the attitudes and be a peacemaker among men. Don’t miss it. You can make a difference in someone’s life. Don’t take it lightly! Bikers are a Brotherhood of the same breed. Jesus doesn’t take being a Brother lightly! He went to the cross for us! Have you accepted Him as your Lord and Savior? I really hope you have, but if not, pray the bikers prayer on this page, but you have to mean it in your heart and then speak it out of your mouth, believing He is the only begotten Son of God. Now, go be a Brother or Sister to those around you! IN “HIS” WIND Preacher Steve

Flying Monkeys First Meeting We Insure the FUN Stuff By: Steve (Monkey Boy Jr.) Rowland One of my Old Coots friends, Tommy “Creeper”, told me about this new club that one of the guys at North Myrtle Beach Harley had started. He had been talking some trash talk and a co-worker said that would happen, when a monkey flies out of your butt! Someone said that The Flying Monkeys would make a great club name. Well, a customer heard them talking and wanted to know how to join. He called his wife (?), and she said she was in. Bada Bing, Bada Boom, a club is born. I contacted Eddie Tofu, he’s the guy who got this thing going, and ask for him to let me know when there first meeting would be so I could go. They met on March 20th at a nice little restaurant in Myrtle Beach. The club has grown to about 50 members; 33 here in MB, a few up north, and one in Australia. Tracie from the NMB Harley shop was the first monkey to show up. We didn’t have to wait to long and 25 of the members showed up. It was just a little group meeting letting everyone know the rules. Basically it is no rules, no dues, and no officers. “No wait!” They have two officers; Sergeant Of Arms and somebody else. It’s nice, they are having fun, and if a ride happens, a ride happens. The great thing about a group like this, is, that the group, as a whole, can support any of the charity rides, poker run or events that come around. It was a good group of riders I met today. A few of them were involved with some other groups or club that I have ridden with. We met at Burky’s Grill in MB. The management couldn’t have been better! Andrea and her crew had them fed, and the place cleaned up in no time. They have burgers and dogs, BBQ, ice cream, and shakes. My bike can’t go by an ice cream shop without wanting to turn in. They have been serving Myrtle Beach since 1983. The owner, Wayne Burkhart, had started this place as Ritz’y He ran this place for 17 years and decided to sell it and retire. He quickly realized that retirement wasn’t for him, so he bought it back. They completely renovated the building, added new equipment, and renamed it Burky’s Grill. They still serve the same food and still have that same 50’s soda fountain feeling. Burky’s Grill has a Cruise-in every Friday night. The Myrtle Beach Car Club comes down and show off their classic automobiles. Coming soon Burky’s Grill is getting a bike night together. Try to make it down to Burky’s Grill at 3901 N. King’s Highway in Myrtle Beach, SC. I want to introduce our motorcycle community to the newest motor club, The Flying Monkeys. Wave to ‘em when you see ‘em. Visit www.BurkysGrill.com to learn more.

For Information Leading To Any Witnesses Of The Below Re: Motorcycle Wreck, July 26, 2008

I was involved in a motorcycle wreck on the above date. The accident happened on I 26 South under an overpass near Hendersonville NC during a bad rain storm. I was hit from behind after just arriving and stopping under the underpass. I was still on my motorcycle because I did not have a chance to get off. A rollback truck hit and pushed me down the side of the road. I flew off the bike and hit my head and I was unconscious for a few minutes. I hit a couple of bikes with my body also. An ambulance picked me up and took me to the hospital.

WHAT I AM ASKING FOR IS TO FIND OUT IF ANYONE WAS UNDER THE BRIDGE AT THE TIME AND WAS A WITNESS TO THE ACCIDENT. There Were Several Other Bikes Parked There And If Anyone Saw The Accident, Please Contact Me At The Phone Number Or Email Below. Thank You In Advance For Your Help. Sincerely, William Gray

Ladies’ Garage Party At Shelton’s H-D

By: Gypsygirl Greetings from Shelton’s H-D here in Goldsboro, NC! We had a great time here on April 1st at the Ladies’ Garage Party. About 20 or so ladies came out to learn about “The American Legend Motorcycle” and hopefully to feel the freedom of the open road and the wind in their hair in the upcoming months and years to come. Stephanie kick started the show with the assistance of Kristi, on the importance of riding apparel. She had explained the differences in gloves, staying warm, padded jackets, leathers, chaps, and leather jackets. Stephanie went on with explaining the differences in helmets, and of course, eyewear protection. She showed off all the cool new things that are out for those of us who suffer from helmet head! Kelli was the demo girl for the helmets and goodies that are coming out. There were full-face helmets that have built in shade guards, plug ins for your blue tooth devices as well as iPods. There are really neat day/night goggles so you don’t have to change glasses when the sun goes down as well as glasses for your own prescription lenses. How cool is that? Shelton gave the presentation on the different families of motorcycles, the importance of customizing the fit of motorcycles to the riders’ personal needs, the importance of being comfortable, and staying alert when riding. Shelton went on to tell us

It was pretty neat to learn how to pick up a downed motorcycle. This can be done from the smallest to largest of motorcycles. The funny part is anybody can do it no matter how large or small we are. Some of the ladies here tonight have been riding for a bit, others were newcomers, but everyone took away valuable information and knowledge. We also learned how to tie down a motorcycle to a trailer. Now we know what soft ties are and what they are for. We were taught to use them in conjunction with the tie down straps. This way we don’t chip paint or damage the motorcycle. Pretty neat! It was a great time. A big “Thank You” to the crew at Shelton’s H-D and an even BIGGER Thank You to all the ladies who came out tonight. You were great! Oh, before I forget, Shelton’s H-D offers the Riders Edge classes to learn to ride. You can contact them at www.sheltonshd.com for more info or stop by 606 Corporate Drive

THE FINAL INSPECTION

Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday in May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates US soldiers who died in service to their country. First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the Civil War, it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars. This year Memorial Day is Monday, May 30th. Proper flag etiquette is to fly your flag at half-mast until noon. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 pm local time. The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass. “Step forward now, soldier, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?” The soldier squared his shoulders and said, “No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry guns, Can’t always be a saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I’ve been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny, That wasn’t mine to keep. Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I’ve wept unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place, Among the people here. They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears. If you’ve a place for me here, Lord, It needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don’t, I’ll understand.” There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. “Step forward now, you soldier, You’ve borne your burdens well. Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets, You’ve done your time in Hell.” Author Unknown

By: WildThing Harley-Davidson of Greensboro hosted their spring Ladies Only Garage Party on Thursday evening, March 24th. This is an opportunity for ladies who want to learn to ride and ladies that have been riding for months or years to get together and share experiences. The dealership re-opens at 7 pm for this special event and as ladies began arriving, they were asked to register and don name tags. There were some really scrumptious finger sandwiches and snacks with soft drinks for those who arrived hungry. Amy Jacobson, Promotions and Marketing Director, welcomed everyone and outlined the agenda. We were separated into two groups; each group was to visit the four stations that were manned by staff members. At the first station, Tim from the sales department, introduced the five models of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Sportster, Dyna, Softail, Touring, and V-Rod, and described the outstanding and differentiating features of each. Amy stepped in and spoke briefly about the Riders Edge course and handed out leaflets on the program. Sharee in the MotorClothes department outfitted the prospective rider from helmet to boots and explained the “why” of the different styles of Harley-Davidson riding gear. Back in the service area, Paul and Nate demonstrated the proper method of picking up a fallen Sportster. Several of the ladies were game and successfully righted the motorcycle under their supervision. At the last station, Mike in parts carefully explained the importance of fitting a motorcycle to the individual for comfort and control. This came as a surprise to some and this experienced parts man answered a lot of pertinent questions. He also introduced performance and maintenance products and the popular Chrome Consulting service offered by the parts department that helps the riders purchase coordinated products that customize the motorcycle. After finishing the stations, we were free to wander and shop all the neat new spring MotorClothes apparel or choose a bargain from the winter sale rack. By 8:30, Amy assembled the group to pull the winner’s name for a Rider’s Edge program that went to Beverly from Winston-Salem. Amy also gave a ride bell to Candy, a happy new rider that rode her bike to this event. It’s all about the ride and Harley-Davidson of Greensboro is surely a one-stop shop for you and your ride to be safe, comfortable, completely outfitted, and maintained. So stop on by at 538 Farragut St in Greensboro, convenient to I-40/85, and see how they can enhance your riding experience.

Spokes & Jokes

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!

Over 5 thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, “Pick up your shovels, mount your arsses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land”. Nearly 75 years ago, (when Welfare was introduced) Roosevelt said, “lay down your shovels, sit on your arsses, and light up a Camel, this is the “Promised Land”. Today, Obama has stolen your shovel, taxed your arsses, raised the price of Camels and mortgaged the A blind man was flying in a small plane “Promised Land”! There was a knock on the door this morning. I opened it to find a young man standing there who said: “I’m a Jehovah’s Witness.” I said “Come in and sit down.” After he sat down I asked him “What do you want to talk about?” He said, “Beats the s%!t out of me, I’ve never gotten this far before.” I had a trivia competition shot to pieces until the last question, which I got wrong. The question was “Where do women have the curliest hair?” The answer I SHOULD have given was “Fiji”. Dear Abby: My husband has a long record of money problems. He runs up huge credit-card bills and at the end of the month, if I try to pay them off, he shouts at me, saying I am stealing his money. He says pay the minimum and let our kids worry about the rest, but already we can hardly keep up with the interest. Also he has been so arrogant and abusive toward our neighbors that most of them no longer speak to us. The few that do are an odd bunch, to whom he has been giving a lot of expensive gifts, running up our bills even more. Also, he has gotten religious. One week he hangs out with Catholics and the next with people who say the Pope is the Anti-Christ, and the next he’s with Muslims. Finally, the last straw. He’s demanding that before anyone can be in the same room with him, they must sign a loyalty oath. It’s just so horribly creepy! Can you help?
> Signed, Lost in DC. Dear Lost: Stop whining, Michelle. You can divorce the jerk any time you want. You’re getting to live in the White House for free, travel the
world, and have others pay for everything for you. The rest of us are stuck with the Baracstard for two more years!
Abby Top tip; if you’re camping in the summer and the attractive girl in the next tent tells you that because it’s so hot she will be sleeping with her flaps open, it’s not necessarily an invitation to casual sex. Wish me luck; I appear in court next Monday.

25th Annual Bike Show & Chili Cook Off

By: Kathy For some reason, every year Shelton’s Harley-Davidson of Durham and the Durham HOG Chapter luck out with the weather. They seem to get the first sunny and warm riding day after a long cold winter. This year March 19th was no exception. The parking lot was filled to capacity, so they lined the motorcycles up on the service road. The line for the free hot dogs was long, but it moved quickly and was worth the wait. Vendors filled the parking lot, but the main thing people came to see was the bike show and the bike give away. They also don’t mind getting those great prices on the merchandise on sale in side Shelton’s. But I also hope you got a chance to say “Hello” to Shelton. He is always in the crowd with a smile on his face and is genuinely glad to see everyone. A band named Crossoverdrive gave a great performance for the event. Well, I know that you would like to have a recap of the winners! OK here are your bike show winners for 2011: Touring w/pack: 1st Place - Ray Little, 2nd Place - John Pruitt. Touring w/out pack: 1st Place - Robert Fowler, 2nd Place - Kelly Fregison. Sportster: 1st Place - Vinny Wilson, 2nd Place - Roger Powell. FX: 1st Place - T. Cherry, 2nd Place - Robby Robbins.

FX Ridged: 1st Place - Dan Roberts, 2nd Place - Teresa Stone. FL: 1st Place - Arron Ellis, 2nd Place - Teddy Virble. Modified: 1st Place - Rick Denby, 2nd Place - Richie Hogan. V-Rod: 1st Place - James Totton. Buell: 1st Place Rodney Robbins. Best In Show went to Robert Fowler. Shelton’s also had some great give always and nobody does a better job emceeing an event than Mike Godwyn. So the best and final prizes that the Durham HOG Chapter sold to 3 lucky winners were: 3rd Place - David Ennis (Shelton’s gift certificate), 2nd Place - Ron McVeigh (Shelton’s gift certificate), and 1st Place, the big winner of the 2011 XL SuperLow was Adam Cohen. Adam was very exited. He had already left the event and they called him on the phone to let him know that he had won. He said that he had purchased 1 ticket and that was the best $5 investment he ever made. Let’s not forget that this event is also famous for the HOG Chili Championship. I am not sure how many years in a row they have won the coveted title, but once again Burlington HOG won the chili cook off. ! Well, all in all it was a great day and Shelton’s and the Durham HOG Chapter appreciate everyone who came out that day!

By:(Steve “Nutterbutter” Rowland) On March 26th I decided to head down to the main Harley shop in Myrtle Beach. They were having an Ms. Harley Pageant, The winner is going to be at all the events in the area and represent Myrtle Beach Harley Davidson. It wasn’t the best weather today, overcast and about 50º. The Harley shop is about 40 miles away; it was pretty cold going down SC 31. I pulled in the parking lot about noon. The pageant started at 1pm. I was expecting some food venders today, but they didn’t have anything setup. Lucky for me, Julie, one of the Old Coots found a couple donuts, so we scored a little nourishment. Denise Triece, the event coordinator, had a nice line up of young ladies for the judges to choose from. They were doing a photo shoot for an upcoming calendar and you can have a few sneak peaks at www.FullThrottleMagazine.com. You can download any of the pictures there for FREE. I know most of our readers didn’t know anything about this thing because it wasn’t in the Cruisin’ Calendar. So they might have missed out on some other great contestants out there and a few more people too. They had pulled in several bikes, and each of the eight contestants got their photo taken in their swim suits. They each walk past the judges in swim wear and in Harley-Davidson MotorClothes. Each contestant was ask why she wanted to be Ms Harley. They all had pretty good answers. After all that Ashley Muir, a 25 year old beauty, is the new Ms. Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson, She is an NC girl who has been modeling for about 7 years and has been in several publications, and calendars. She has been in Myrtle Beach about 2 years. She worked at Hooters in NMB, for about a year, so some of you might have seen her there. She loves riding, but doesn’t have a bike right now. She is very excited to be Ms. Hartley Davidson. Make sure you stop by the Harley shops and events that she is attending and say hi, she’ll be signing calendars and getting pictures.

We’ll Trike Your Bike! Give Us A Call

Authorized Dealer For: California Sidecar, Motor Trike, The Trike Shop The 1st runner up is Erica Scolari and the 2nd runner up is Desiree Walters. The other contestants were Tiffany Duval, Ashley Pate, Anastashia Powell, Haley Fleisch, Ce’Lina Ellies. The crowd got a pretty good show, the weather held out. I guess there was about 200 people there off and on. I saw some friends there that you’ve read about before, nice seeing them again. The Old Coots seem to support lots of thing here in MB, they are every where, make sure you give a wave when you see those Orange color of the Coots. This May is the Grand Strand Bike Week from the 13th to the 21st. Denise has lots of stuff planned for bike week. Full Throttle Saloon, Flaunt Girls, Nascar Simulator, Pier Parties, Beach Parties, Una Circus and much more to come it will be a great Rally, lots of venders, about 65 at both location, both North and South shops and Myrtle Beach Mall. Demo ride all week. Up in North Myrtle Beach at Barefoot Landing, the venders will be back, about 45 venders will be there, including Mustang seats, J@P Cycles, Kuryakyn, to many to mention here. If you get a chance to get down here foe bike week, I will be at both location all week long, stop by and say hey, I’ll get your picture for the web site.

By: Gypsygirl Hello everyone, Greetings from Goldsboro! March 26th was a yucky and cold day here for the riders who came to be involved in the HOG Spring Fling Charity Ride for the American Heart Association. The Goldsboro HOG does this ride every year starting at Shelton’s H-D and take different routes and stops every year. This year the ride’s 1st stop was The Tobacco Museum on 301N, then off to Shelton’s H-D in Smithfield, then off and running the curvy road course of Devil’s Racetrack then Whisky Dicks for the final stop. Whisky Dicks had music by DJ Shuree who sure had a lotta fun rolling out those tunes as everyone was rolling into the warmth from the chilly ride they just encountered. Thank goodness the rain held off till the ride was complete. Whisky Dicks had hot food, drinks, and prizes waiting for everyone. Curtis called out the auction items; half the door prizes were given back for the auctioning. Curtis seemed to be having a blast calling out the bids. Every one seemed to have a grand time. Ernie Kerby and Donna Kerby are the reason for this ride for the past 5 years or so. They have been involved with the Goldsboro HOG Chapter for a long, long time when Donna needed to have a heart transplant. Donna had the transplant and everything seemed to be going smooth when all of a sudden Donna’s body started to reject the heart transplant. At that time, the American Heart Association did everything they could do for Ernie and Donna. Ernie thought this would be a fine way to help others who face the same situation. This ride goes on every year around the same time to remember Donna for her strength and courage and to realize just how important life really is. Maybe if you hadn’t attended this year you can mark it on your calendar for next year and come have some fun with great people, good food, and for a really great cause. Even with the weather being on the yucky side, the ride had brought in $1800. That’s $1800 for the Heart Association to help others with. Thank you all for everything you’ve done to make today a great success! Ride Safe, Stay Safe, See ya’s around.

Bikers Protest Motorcycle-Only Checkpoints By: Sam Hochberg AIM/NCOM Motorcycle E-News Service: NCOM Biker Newsbytes Hundreds of motorcyclists from around Georgia rode to the Capitol to rev their engines in protest of a federal grant the Georgia State Patrol is using to conduct motorcycle-only checkpoints. The crowd denounced the overly-invasive and discriminatory roadblocks as unconstitutional and chanted “No more profile stops” and “Education, not checkpoints!” The protest rally came two weeks after the state patrol conducted motorcycle checkpoints on Interstates 75 and 95 during Daytona Bike Week, during which troopers stopped motorcyclists at roadblocks to check for proper paperwork, approved helmet, and properly functioning equipment. “The roadblocks are a violation of our rights and are a pure attempt at profiling,” said Dan Forrest, State Director of ABATE of Georgia. “Having a registration, proof of insurance and an endorsement on our license does make us safe. Loud pipes never killed anyone.” Georgia is the first state to conduct such checkpoints under a federal grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as part of a $350,000 pool of funds available to as many as five law enforcement agencies nationwide to test the effectiveness of a New York State Police pilot program. Several motorcycle organizations are urging riders to call on Governor Nathan Deal to cancel the remainder of the checkpoints, which will be scheduled over the next 20 months at undisclosed locations during unannounced times. Some in Congress have also questioned NHTSA’s grant and called for Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to pull the plug on future funding for motorcycle-only checkpoints. Rep. Tom Petri (R-WI), who recently co-sponsored legislation to prohibit such grants, called the checkpoints “outrageously intrusive.” Indeed, many of the protesters at the March 23rd rally held signs in support of US House Resolution 904 which would prevent the US DOT from providing funds to states which would be used for motorcycle roadblocks. In the meantime, motorcyclists are also awaiting a court ruling on the constitutionality of the New York checkpoints, being challenged by N.Y. Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney Mitch Proner on behalf of his clients as well as representing the interests of ABATE of New York and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM).

Polaris Acquires Indian Motorcycle Polaris Industries Inc. announced the April 19th acquisition of Indian Motorcycle Limited. “We are excited to be part of the revitalization of a quintessentially American brand,” said Scott Wine, CEO of Polaris Industries Inc. “Indian built America’s first motorcycle. With our technology and vision, we are confident we will deliver the classic Indian motorcycle, enhanced by the quality and performance for which Polaris and Victory are known.” Indian, begun in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1901 went bankrupt in 1953 and after a long battle over the rights to the iconic name, The Gilroy group, as they were known, turned California Motorcycle Company into Indian Motorcycle Company in 1999 only to collapse in late 2003. Their demise was caused in part by mechanical problems that plagued the new Power Plus motor. In 2006 Stephen Julius, director of Stellican, a London based private equity firm, purchased a factory in Kings Mountain, NC with hopes of employing 800 workers. Of the 48 employees at the plant, 23 were engineers. Each motorcycle was hand assembled by a pair of engineers who signed off on each unit built. “We are delighted to have reached an agreement with Polaris. Polaris will utilize its well-known strengths in engineering, manufacturing, and distribution to complete the mission we undertook upon re-launching the brand in 2006: harness the enormous potential of the Indian brand,” said Stephen Julius, chairman of Indian and managing director of Stellican. “Polaris is the most logical owner of Indian Motorcycle. Indian’s heritage brand will allow Polaris to aggressively compete across an expanded spectrum of the motorcycle market.” The plant in NC is closing and relocating the operation to Iowa. We will have to wait and watch for future developments in the continuing saga of the Indian motorcycle.

MAN AND HIS MACHINE • Brandon Hockaday By: ChromeDoll Last June, WBBB - 96 Rock out of Raleigh, NC held a contest called “Best Bike In The Triangle”. 96 Rock and Yuengling sponsored the event. Hundreds of bikes from all over the state competed in the contest. The contest was a “people’s choice” event and Brandon Hockaday out of Zebulon, NC won first place. Brandon’s bike “Bones” is a ‘00 Kawasaki Vulcan 800. Brandon, along with his friends Jon, Eagle, and his dad worked on the bike over the course of a year. They worked at night and on weekends at Scootworks, the family shop in Zebulon. Most every component of the bike has been modified, customized or hand built (with the exception of the frame and engine internals). Being on a budget, may parts came from wrecks/salvage or are modified factory items. Even the seat was the stocker with heavy modifications, as a new saddle wasn’t in the budget. Although Brandon had worked with his dad on various projects, Bones was his first bike customization. There were so many bikes that were entered into the contest that when Brandon found out he made the top 10 he was more than thrilled. When he found out he had actually won 1st Place, he was extremely blown away. Needless to say, the entire staff of Scootworks is very proud of the bike and, of course, of Brandon.

I would personally like to congratulate Brandon on this big win. If you’d like to see pictures of the complete build of Bones and of some of the other custom bikes built by Scootworks just visit their website.

Open House At Ray Price Harley-Davidson

By: WildThing Saturday, April 16 was the culmination of a weeklong annual spring open house celebration at Ray Price Harley-Davidson in Raleigh, NC. In past years South Saunders street was parked full of motorcycles, with others riding around the block, waiting for a spot to open up. This year, the weathermen predicted some severe storms, so the dealership had to accommodate lots of cages with off site parking on the surrounding side streets and shuttle service. When Mark and I arrived, Saunders street was lined with vendors, lots of walking traffic, and a few brave motorcyclists. The Ray Price Clearance Center, a favorite shopping haunt of mine, was supposed to have a sidewalk sale but the threat of weather kept them indoors. It was pretty breezy, billowing up canopies, and messing up hairdos, but that didn’t stop folks from browsing and enjoying the warm spring temps. Old Time BBQ was on hand with tantalizing aromas coming from their booth, Wild Bill pin stripping was trying to keep his albums from blowing away, and at Lynn Isenhour’s Motorcycle Tours rig, the giant trip photos were secured, but the flower pots were overturned and the canopy flapping furiously. There were several other booths, the CMA was offering bike blessings, and the Blue Knights and Bikers for Christ were talking to folks about their programs, as was the USO. Hooters, and Groovy Dogs were set up in the front parking lot. However, the scheduled band, All My Rowdy Friends and the bike show, both outside activities, were postponed until May 7. Inside the dealership was where it was going on this day! The LOH had a table of luscious baked goods right at the front door and the HOG Chapter was still selling raffle tickets for the motorcycle, and Gary Poole was meeting and greeting and passing out his now famous towels. We browsed through the departments and made our way to the Triumph area to say “hi” to Jordan and Kristie. We noticed a sign posted that Ray Price Triumph had earned an award for 2010 Best New Triumph Dealer. Congratulations! In the center of the showroom there was a carpeted runway set up on the “dragstrip” and chairs lined up on either side that filled up as the fashion show began at 2 pm. First out there were cool guys wearing cool Harley shirts and jeans. They were soon joined by ladies in Harley’s line of island fashions and kids showing off the line and little fashions, as well as models showing the line of Triumph clothing. Kudos to Maureen and George, who coordinated the fashion show, and to all the guys and gals from the sales force, parts department, and service department who strutted on the runway to showcase all the new Harley apparel. Next up, Kris, the Marketing and Promotions Director, took the stage to thank all the HOG volunteers and announced

upcoming events at the dealership. He went on to announce the winner and competitors in their annual Rides Of March Contest who racked up mileage from 5004 to 1543 and they picked from a variety of prizes including a Crown Royal satin jacket, a complete LoJack system, and several vacation accommodations like Riders Roost and the Oriental Inn. Next came the 50/50 drawing with $412 in the pot. Doug from Fuquay was the lucky one. Then Kris turned over the mic to Mark DaPonte, the HOG Chapter Chairman for their motorcycle raffle. This year the raffle raised $48,000 and the proceeds are going to the favorite HOG charities like Duke Children’s Hospital and Pediatric Brain Tumor Association. Ray Price gave the chapter a good deal on the bike and they gave cash prizes of $500, $1000, and $2000, prior to pulling the winning ticket for the 2011 Street Glide. David, from Durham was not on hand, but they phoned him about his win and received an enthusiastic “all right!” from him. As if that wasn’t enough giveaways, Kris had to giveaway all the stuff on the Lucky Number Prize Board. You had to be there to collect your prize and believe me, there was plenty of real good stuff to win: accommodations to Winterplace, tickets to Jimmy Buffet concert, Carowinds, Toby Keith concert, and a Durham Bulls game, $25 gas card, Fitness club trial memberships, and more. By this time, the wind outside had really kicked up, and folks hurried out to their cars. We looked out the windows and most of the vendors had buttoned up their booths and taken down canopies. By the time we got to the rear door, the storm hit. The rain was sheeting down the street and the wind just howling. Then we heard a crash and the power went out. When it slowed down a little, there were two power poles down across Saunders Street, trees down on top of vehicles, motorcycles blown over and the glass on the front door was shattered. Folks that hadn’t gotten out, were huddled around the front door and some ventured outside to watch as staff members retrieved large pieces of wood pressboard and tree branches from the street and stood up the bikes. By then, police and ambulance sirens were blaring and traffic was backed up. We decided to make a run for it and left out the back door while it was still raining pretty hard. By the time we got to Cary the road was drying and the sum was out. Raleigh got a pretty hard hit according to the news, it was easy to think it could have been a tornado touch down, but thank God no one at the dealership was hurt and the damage is repairable. It was over as quick as it came in. See all the pictures at www. FullThrottleMagazine.com. Be sure to mark you calendar for the Sunshine Version of the Ray Price Harley Davidson Open House on May 7. Bring your bike out for the bike show and enjoy music by All My Rowdy Friends.

By: Steve (Cookie-puss) Rowland I took off about 8:30 on Saturday, April 9th because I had to get down to the first start for today’s ride. It was a bit overcast and just a bit chilly, but the forecast was looking good. Kathy, one of my Old Coot’s friends, joined the Flight Of Honor organization. This was her first attempt to raise money for the great group of people who help our WWII vets see our nation’s capitol and our war memorials. For those of you who don’t know, they are raising money to send some of the vets on a one-day event that they will never forget, and will talk about for months and years to come. Jacci told me today that she received a letter from the son of one of the guys who went last October. He wanted to thank everyone for making his father so happy. He said that his dad spoke of that day until the day he passed. Last October, I was at the airport when they got back from their trip. I got to see a lot of happy faces coming off that plane. I thought Kathy had a nice setup for a ride. The ride began at Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson and only the last stop had any alcohol, so if you wanted to you could enjoy a frosty beverage at the end of the ride. I like that the first four places didn’t serve adult drinks. The ride ended at Longbeard’s in Carolina Forest. They had a nice little setup and we had slider BBQ, beans, and coleslaw. If you stop by Longbeard’s make sure to tell Ronnie that you read about his place in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. We had about 15 bikes on today’s ride and sold about 25 poker hands. Paul won best hand three 9s. They had some great door prizes and I won a Basket-o-cheer, which was pretty cool. My wife, Joanie, was happy. The Honor Flight Poker Run raised about $250. Like I told Kathy, its $250 they didn’t have this morning, and we all had a good reason to go for a ride today.

By: Kathy The best breakfast in town was at Crazy Shots in Hillsborough, NC on Saturday, April 2nd. Sorry if you missed it. It was in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar and in Crazy Shot’s ad. We are talking all you could eat bacon, eggs, sausage, grits, potatoes, pastry, and fresh fruit, and I saw quite a few people enjoying their return trips to the breakfast bar. A lot of people chose coffee, tea, or juice with their breakfast, but I also saw some red eyes and some mixed drinks accompanying their meals, too! I noticed quite a few people getting memberships that morning so we know they liked their breakfast. If you missed it, Crazy Shots is planning another biker breakfast. Just look for it in their advertisement. Crazy Shots appreciate all who helped prepare the breakfast and all who came out and made it a successful event. They look forward to seeing you again at Crazy Shots for the 81 Spring Bash on May 28th!

Smokin’ Harley-Davidson/Freeborne’s South Bike Night

By: Caroline I love bike nights. To me, it’s exciting when all the local motorcycle friendly establishments begin to designate one special weeknight to their customers that ride. It’s that sure sign of spring that occurs just as sure as the flowers blooming, or in this case, when the warmer weather calls us all to “get our motors runnin’.” Thursday, April 7th, I decided to check out the kickoff bike night at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson and Freeborne’s South. Freeborne’s and Smokin’ combined their efforts and pulled off the best bike night I have ever been to. There had to be at least 200 bikes there. Brother Bill got a good corn hole competition going by giving $50 gift certificates as prizes. I had to stop by and say hello to Eldena from the Bob Karney Law Firm. They had come all the way from Charlotte to take part in the fun and give out lots of Bulldog goodies. It wasn’t too long before a good size crowd was gathering at Freeborne’s South’s to take advantage of drink and wing specials and listen to the great sounds from Dam-Fino. If you haven’t heard them, just watch for them to come back to Freeborne’s, you won’t be disappointed. The Bud Girls were also there to make sure no one went thirsty. As I was leaving, I stopped to watch the Dyno-To-Go just in time to see Clark Hemrick steal the show by winning the dyno shoot-out. It was

a “blast”. To see why visit: http://goo.gl/dsI4s. It was hard to believe it was just Thursday night. I haven’t seen this much excitement on a weekend lately! I you want to keep up with what is going on at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson and Freeborne’s South, you can go to their website at www. freebornes.com, and www.smokinharley.com. Or you can always find the latest events at these places and many more at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar. www.FullThrottleMagazine.com.

US Defenders Activated In North Carolina

By: Doc Ski, Commander US Defenders NC On 26 March 2011 member clubs of the North Carolina Confederation of Clubs met with two representatives of the US Defenders for training in how to implement their program in North Carolina. Bandido Gimme Jimmy, and Escondido Paul flew in from Texas to help the NC Defenders get started. The US Defenders is a program established to support active participation in the legislative process for members of the Confederation of Clubs. Up till now, the Confederation of Clubs had focused its activities on legal issues, like court cases and law enforcement activities. This is a step into the arena of legislation for the COC, and it promises to give the members more of a say in how our government works. Each member club has two representatives assigned as liaisons to the program. Each liaison carries out certain activities when a Call to Action is made. The activities may include notifying other members of the network, writing letters or e-mails, and making strategic phone calls as directed. The program has seen tremendous success in Texas and other states across the country. The US Defenders have also been active in national issues (i.e., NHTSA Funding issue). The North Carolina program is hopeful to see similar results here. The training consisted of presentations on how to conduct Call To Actions and what the liaisons should do. A large part of the program was discussion on how the program is working in other states and how NC can bring those ideas to bear on our issues here. The program structure consists of three elements: US Defenders and their affiliated clubs, the Coalition Of Independent Riders, and Citizen Supporters. Bandido Gimme Jimmy and Esccondido Paul gave examples of how the three elements can work together to improve our communication with our government. Doc Ski was elected to be the Commander of the US Defenders of NC. John “Bonker” Burgess was appointed as the Commander of the Coalition Of Independent Riders (COIR).

By: Chris Decou and Shamra Everette If you missed the Wild Pony Poker Run on March 19th, you missed a good time. It was a great day to ride on the Outer Banks. The weather was beautiful! About 70 riders gathered at Outer Banks Harley-Davidson in Harbinger, NC, for a ride to Manteo and Corolla. Our goal was to enjoy the day and raise money for The Corolla Wild Horse Fund. We accomplished both goals and it was great to spend time with old and new friends. The winner of the poker run received a $50 gift card to OBX Harley-Davidson and the worst hand won a $25 gift card to Jolly Rogers. Outer Banks HOG made hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, drinks available for all the riders. Outer Banks HOG Chapter raised $1405 through registration of the poker run, food sales, and the 50/50. Our sponsoring dealership, Outer Banks Harley-Davidson donated $500 to bring the grand total to $1905. Kathy, Shamra, Maurice, and Mike presented the donation to Karen who graciously accepted on behalf of the Corolla Wild Horse Foundation of Corolla, NC. You can learn more about The Wild Horse Foundation of Corolla by visiting www.corollawildhorses.com. Outer Banks Harley-Davidson is located at 8739 NC Highway 158 in Harbinger, NC 27941 Visit www.harleybay.com for more information about OBX Harley-Davidson.
