How did it get to be June already? The month of May flew by like Tommy Grimes on the Ray Price H-D Top Fuel drag bike. Read about their 6.344 ET at 228.77 mph pass at The ROCK in this issue. Man!, It was good to get a whiff of nitro and burning rubber this early in the year. Now the question is, “Where are YOU going to ride?” Here’s a suggestion. Check out all the events listed in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar. Pick out somewhere that you have not been before and head on out. There is adventure in the air. I would name a few events that I think are biggies, but that isn’t how it works. YOU decide which events to go to and then you let us know how it was. We welcome submissions from anyone. There have been some changes at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine in the past few months. We have changed the magazine format a little bit, not a lot, just “tweaked” it a bit. We have also upgraded our web site. We have “tweaked” it a lot! The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is now available on line so you can view it from your hand held device where ever you are. Check out the VIP discount coupons by clicking on the “everything else” button. There are some real deals there and all you have to do is cash in on them at participating advertisers. June 14th is Flag Day. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. Fly her proudly! Sunday June 19th is Father’s Day. Even if you aren’t one, you have one, so do something cool for Dad. As always, be careful out there. As I ride, I am continually reminded that there are a lot of drivers who are not concentrating on driving. Thank you for taking The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine along for the ride.

D&Q Motorsports Customer Appreciation Open House
By: ChromeDoll D&Q Motorsports in Angier, NC held their Customer Appreciation Open House on Saturday, April 30th. This year was really no different than in years past with one exception; it was better than ever! The festivities began around 4am when “Eggy” and his “Greasy Rider Grill” began cooking the pigs. Once the crowd started to arrive in the early afternoon, the BBQ was ready, and once again, Eggy did not disappoint. This year, not only was there the awesome BBQ along with the fixins, they did roasted peanuts, too. Talk about yummy. The day was perfect weather for riding, enjoying the open house and for hanging with good friends. After doing some other rides, a couple of groups ended their ride at D&Q to get some food and listen to the band, Southern Grace. The band did an absolutely awesome job entertaining us all. BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) also set up selling 50/50 raffle tickets to help support the cause. Jeff & John of D&Q stayed busy in the store talking to customers about different goodies they could get for their bikes and/or available services from the shop. If you missed the open house at D&Q or if you’ve just never been there, you need to stop by and meet Jeff and John. These are two of the nicest guys around and have been doing this work for years. They are extremely knowledgeable about motorcycles, dirt bikes, and ATV’s. D&Q Motorsports is located at 44 North Broad Street in Angier, NC (27501). Once you go there you won’t be disappointed. Check out their ad in this issue. I, personally, would like to thank the guys for such a great day, great food, and great hospitality. Continue to read The Carolina’s Full Throttle Magazine for future events like the D&Q Motorsports Customer Appreciation Open House and until then, remember; no matter what brand you ride, it’s all the same wind in your face. Get out there and RIDE!

2nd Annual Sandi’s Ride & 8th Annual Chicks Rule Show
By: Scott Wicker On Saturday, May 7th, riders gathered to participate in the 2nd Annual Sandi’s Ride to raise proceeds for the Patricia Bynum Fund in memory of Sandy Davis. The weather was absolutely great for the 70-mile ride through the beautiful country areas of Alamance, Chatham, and Guilford counties. We were all honored to see Randy Davis back at the ride’s end at Davis Harley-Davidson. A special moment was shared by everyone that participated on the ride, in the show, and by all the Davis H-D employees. With everyone gathered in front of the dealership, a basket was placed on the ground, and then with everyone looking on, Randy Davis pulled a chord that opened the top off the basket releasing several doves into the air as a remembrance of Sandi. There wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd as everyone paused to reflect on the day’s events and to remember our friend, Sandi. Along with the ride, the day’s events included the 8th Annual Chicks Rule Bike Show. The ladies all had their scoots polished up and that made for a full field of entries in the show. Davis also provided demo rides so those interested could test ride all the 2011 models in stock. Everyone had a memorable day, a safe ride, and a good time. We would like to thank everyone at Davis Harley-Davidson for their hospitality and providing us with a good time throughout the day’s events. Davis Harley-Davidson would like to thank the participants in the ride and show. In all over $1100 was raised for the Patricia Bynum Fund in memory of Sandi. Thanks to the members of the Burlington H.O.G. Group for the great ride and the safety provided. The winners and top-finishers in the Chicks Rule Bike Show are as follows.

Riders Of The Storm
By: Jeanie Hood A benefit/poker run, rain or shine, was planned for the Bikers For Bikers Foundation on April 16th. As most folks know, April 16th was one of the deadliest days North Carolinians have experienced in history. Kickstands were announced to be up at noon sharp. Mickey went to Lea’s Lounge where everyone was to meet and was expecting a minimum of 30 bikes that signed up to participate. At 11:30 the first bike showed up and by 12 noon there were 3 bikes and 4 riders, including myself. Bennie Cowper from Clayton, and Don Roberson from West End along with Mickey & I rode off with a few folks at Lea’s wishing us luck and the skies showing all the signs of the wrath of hell about to drop down and grab us. The small turnout even with the weather forecast was a little disappointing, but the ride was invigorating to say the least. First stop was in Sanford for a quick draw of the cards, a smoke, and a coke before saddling up and moving out trying to beat the storms. The wind was already gusting so high that we could barely draw cards and Mickey’s glasses flew off his head and across the parking lot. Every mile was windier than the last and dark clouds were chasing us like demons dropping out of the sky trying to grab us. After about 40 miles of gusting winds and riding fast and hard we made it to the Korner Pocket in Raleigh. We were greeted by 5 of the 20 people who were supposed to join us at the stop. They were all in cages and there were smiles and hugs. After another quick draw of the cards and a drink that took all of 2 minutes to suck down, we quickly mounted the horse sand headed out. After seeing the weather report we decided to skip the third stop until later in the evening. Once again, we were racing against the fowl clouds dropping out of the skies and thinking it was going to catch us! After about 10-15 more miles, we made it to Lil Deb’s Blistering Pines. Everyone grabbed roasted chicken, green beans, buttered potatoes, and macaroni salad. Before we could get settled, the storm blew in and we moved to the bar in the barn. It wasn’t a minute too soon! The rain blew in and there were tornados all around us. Trees were uprooted, houses were smashed, power lines were down, trampolines were blown to the side of the road, cars were tumbled, and things were flying around. We decided to finish drawing the cards there and Carol Tonnesen from Rolesville had the winning hand. She donated her winnings back to BFBF. Next, while the tornados were whipping all around us, we did the tickets for prizes. Have you ever seen a biker with ladies leopard gloves on? Hmmmm! It sure made me wonder! I guess it’s the rock & roller thing. It was so dark we had to use candles & lighters to see. After a while the storm passed, but the roads were blocked. Several hours later, after the roads were cleared, we all went to McKenzies in Raleigh, which was suppose to be one of our stops, to see Dan Shanahan and Tommy Thunderfoot, the Accelerators, turn on the blues. We enjoyed more food, (pig picking time), and the best margarita
I’ve had in NC and I know “Ritas”. We even got to meet the owners and there was a lady dancing with a pair of pink boots and a big smile on. As y’all know I’m from Texas and wear some pretty crazy boots. I just thought my boots were wild until I saw hers. Those of us that stayed spent the night at Blistering Pines. We got up early to hot cup of fresh coffee and a cool brisk air for the ride back. Too bad we didn’t pack our coats. Most of the gas stations were closed and we were detoured so many times around Sanford that we ran out of gas. Six bikes passed and not one stopped! A nice man in a truck stopped and brought us 2 gallons of gas to bring us on home. All in all, it was what a biker’s weekend is made of. Money was made to help the foundation, we found out who would stand by their word even in the worst of weather and we got to RIDE THE STORM!

3rd Annual Blue Ridge Bike Fest By: Barry Burton I couldn’t wait for my first event of the season and of course it had to be one of the biggest events for the Roanoke Civic Center. To start the morning I got up early and looked forward to the ride, approximately 100 miles, enjoying the nice Virginia mountain roads along the way. It took me 2 hours to get there. When I arrived I found that I was just in time for the opening. I met up with Elliot Broyles to get my credentials and he showed me the ropes. The first stop was the Hogs4Hokies show and information table. I really wanted to say thanks to their organization for supporting a great cause and having friendly people to watch my extra gear for the day as I took photos of the event. The Blue Ridge Bike Fest held on April 16th consisted of three sections on the inside and two sections on the outside, having an activity for everyone. In the first section, there were the venders, which seemed to be a sold out event. It was packed from wall to wall with leather, bikes, jewelry, golf carts; any accessory that you would want for your bike was here. It was here that I met a new friend from speedy customs-Speedy Newsome. With a name like that, I had to have a shirt. After browsing through all of the venders, I found a great bargain on a new rain suit, which was the item of the day since it had been raining most of the morning. In The second section was the custom bike show with about 25 entries. Sometimes I wonder where the bike builders come up with some of the unique designs that make you want a new bike for Christmas. The best of show went to a Mike Jones. In the third section they had moved the outside venders and bands into the coliseum because of the rain. Some of the vend-
ers were offering new and used merchandise. There were three bands; Paradox, Oxytone, and Blackberry Smoke performing at different intervals. There were also trailers from Yamaha and Triumph offering demo rides for the crowd. Moving outside after the rain let up, they had a stunt show put on by the Star Boys. After one of the stunt guys did a burn out, the motor blew on his motorcycle. I’m sure that was a good day for him. He really had the crowd pumped. This event took awhile to see everything. I had to hurry back inside to get ready for my favorite event - the bikini contest. Six contestants were in the finals. I totally enjoyed watching 6 fabulous ladies in bikinis walking across the stage. And the winner of the Miss Blue Ridge bike fest 2011 went to Summer Griffin. The Blue Ridge Bike Fest is a three-day event. There is something different going on everyday. I can’t wait to go back next year. Thanks everyone I had great time.

By: Buzz As I rolled up to Greensboro Harley-Davidson on April 30th, I was pleased to see a score of American flags flapping in the breeze. Our flag was bordering the parking lot of both the dealership and Steel Horse Saloon next door. It was a beautiful sight, coupled with line of bikes ready for the ride and the Carolina blue sky. It’s days like this that make life’s little problems fade away as we enjoy the freedom of the open road, to enjoy the rights handed down to us by our Creator, written by our Founding Fathers, and protected by the brave men and women of our military. On that beautiful morning we gathered for more than just enjoying a beautiful day of riding, today we were riding for the Rovers. The Carolina Patriot Rovers Inc. is a unique charity doing a great service for our returning combat veterans with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). The Carolina Patriot Rovers Inc. rescues dogs and trains them to be therapy companion dogs and places them, free of charge, with American soldiers suffering with PTSD. Carolina Patriot Rovers Inc. has already placed 2 therapy companion dogs with returned combat veterans and needs our help to continue there efforts to save dogs, and help American veterans return to civilian life. There are 10 other “Rovers” in the camp, 5 are still in training, and 5 are already assigned to returning combat veterans. Registration was at 10am, and there was a healthy line of bikes already staged for the ride. More riders rolled in as I registered and talked to Lamar Mullis, the Executive Director of Carolina Patriot Rovers Inc. I also got a chance to shake hands and with talk to Cody Nance, who had returned to the States this past November and will receive Rover “Colt”. Originally from Colfax, NC, Cody was looking forward to the warmer months and getting out on the lake! When it was time to ride David Cantara, US Army Veteran and founder of the Carolinas Patriot Rovers Inc., gave us some pre-ride info and got us ready to ride. We took a nice hour-long back roads ride that was completely police escorted. It was such a pleasant day to be out for a ride. We went past some beautiful pastures, and fields. The sun was shining down on us and I got my first sunburn of the year! Guilford County Sheriff’s Department and the Greensboro Police Department escorted the ride. The escort made the ride seamless it was nice to blow through the stop lights and not have to worry about the traffic from the on ramps on the highway sections of the ride. Once we returned to Greensboro Harley-Davidson there was, of course, a chow line. Boy, was I hungry! A band named “The Swell” was on the stage in the motor park behind Steel Horse Saloon. They were crankin’ out some classic rock tunes while the Steel Horse served up beers for the thirsty riders. The music went on for a few hours and Greensboro Harley-Davidson was doing hourly drawings inside the dealership. 96 bikes were in attendance that day and we were able to raise $2000 to help the Patriot Rovers. I was proud to attend
this ride as I am a proud American and it’s an honor to have an opportunity to give back to our veterans who have given so much to afford me the luxuries of every day life. I would like to take a moment to thank ALL of the veterans and active duty military. Thank you, and God bless you all. The Carolina Patriot Rovers Inc. still needs your help! To donate to the visit www.patriotrovers.org, or give them a call at 336-931-0909 I snapped some pictures of everyone leaving in the procession. Make sure to check www.FullThrottleMagazine.com > pictures > June 2011 > Ride For The Rovers to see the pictures from this event.

By: Matt Danielson, McGrath & Danielson Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) held meetings in Washington, DC with stakeholders in motorcycle safety. While many things were discussed there were a few items of particular interest to motorcyclists. I’m sure that by now everyone has heard about the motorcycle only checkpoints that were done in Georgia the week of Daytona Bike Week. According to attendees at the meeting it was reported that these weren’t actual traffic stops but rather rolling checkpoints. Which is to say that most people didn’t stop, only slowed down through a closed truck weigh station to be observed by officers and then stopped if the police felt they had reason to inspect more closely. Things being observed were lighting, exhaust systems, valid tags and of course “noncompliant” helmets. $70,000 in federal grant money was spent on these stops and normally these grants require matching state funds bringing the total to $140,000. All this money and manpower and to date we have not had confirmation of a single ticket being issued. We have confirmed numerous warnings but no tickets. We will keep looking. Besides the monumental waste of money and the intrusion upon the citizens’ right to travel free from governmental interference, the manner in which these check points were operated raises some serious constitutional issues. As you know from the previous article that I wrote on this issue, one of the restrictions that the United States Supreme Court has placed upon checkpoints is that the officers operating the checkpoint must not have discretion as to whom they stop. They must stop every vehicle or every third vehicle etc. They cannot have unfettered discretion as to who will be stopped. It appears that that particular rule was ignored in Georgia. We’ll keep you posted as we find out more about these and other similar stops around the country. On another note, it appears that another issue being studied by NHTSA is license plate lighting and mounting. Apparently NHTSA is concerned about tags mounted on the side of bikes, tucked deep underneath luggage or surrounded by bright lights. I am not quite sure why this is an issue for NHTSA in that their focus is supposed to be highway safety. I have yet to hear of a motorcycle accident that was caused by the manner in which the license plate of the motorcycle was mounted. At the end of the day this is not a safety issue. However, automated enforcement equipment, such as red-light cameras, is becoming increasingly popular with state legislators. Tags mounted on the side of a bike, tucked deep underneath luggage or surrounded by bright lights can make it difficult to issue automated tickets as the cameras can have a hard time getting a good picture of the tag. Once again, this does not seem like a safety issue so I question why NHTSA is involved. We will continue to watch this issue. As always if you have any questions or comments on anything that is written here or any other matters of interest to motorcyclists please feel free to contact Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group at 1-800-321-8968. The American Veterans Traveling Tribute
By: Michael Frederick The American Veterans Traveling Tribute was on exhibit in Marion, NC from May 11 through May 16 at the Corpening Memorial YMCA’s athletic fields. Randy Hollifield, himself a Vietnam War veteran, first asked local officials and civic clubs to endorse his project of having a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial come to McDowell County. He made his proposal at a McDowell County Commission meeting just two days before Veterans Day in November 2009. Hollifield said he wanted to bring the American Veterans Traveling Tribute to Marion. It is a mobile group of memorials and exhibits anchored by an 80% reproduction of the Vietnam Memorial that includes all of the names on the original in Washington, DC. Other memorials and exhibits honor the men and women who fought in World War II, the Korean War, and the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. A special section honors the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Special Thanks is due to Randy Hollifield, Gary Wolf, and Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club that escorted the memorial wall 142 miles from Rock Hill, SC to Marion, North Carolina. It was a dream that came true. They raised about $50,000 in the last 18 months. You can get more information about The American Veterans Traveling Tribute and read Reflections: A Vietnam Vet’s Story by visiting http://goo.gl/uDBcv or www.avtt.org/

14th Annual Freedom Memorial Wall Dedication By: Caroline Jones Since 1998, the first Sunday in May has been designated as a time of remembrance for those that loved to ride who have passed. This year’s Memorial Wall Sunday seemed to be a time to look back on where the idea started and how far it has come. Curly and Laura Williams, who at were recognized at the memorial service, first conceived the idea. Smokin’ Harley-Davidson has carried on the tradition since they bought the dealership. The day always begins early with breakfast for those who come to ride in the Memorial ride. This year there were 81 bikes, 35 cages, which included 115 riders and one pooch in a sidecar. The riders arrived back at Smokin’ HarleyDavidson around noon, just in time to enjoy a barbeque lunch and gospel music. The main program began around 1:30 pm. As he has every year, Mayor Allen Joines was there to proclaim the first Sunday in May as Memorial Wall Sunday. Mayor Joines, reminded us that the memorial wall was the first of its kind in the United States commemorating as he put it “the brotherhood of motorcycle riders goes beyond life as life goes beyond death”. At this point, Brother Bill Dotson read the names of each person on the Memorial Wall, beginning with those who have been added in the past year. As each name is called, the family or friends can come by receive a flower to place on the wall. The color guard from American Legion Post 55 was there to present the colors and play taps at the end of the reading of the names. The program concludes with balloons for each name released into the air. If you would like to visit the Freedom Memorial Wall, it is available for public viewing at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson at 3441 Myer Lee Drive in Winston-Salem, NC. Customer Appreciation Day is the more festive part of a tradition at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson. It is always held on

the Saturday before the Memorial Wall dedication on Sunday. Everyone there was definitely having a great time. This was the opportunity for Smokin’ to show customers that they appreciate their business. Not only could you enjoy free food and music, there were plenty of specials and discounts available everywhere. I enjoyed watching folks at the corn hole toss for $50 gift cards. Balloon pops for added discounts were given for those who made purchases. The Winston-Salem HOG Chapter sold raffle tickets for the Memorial Wall maintenance fund that gave customers 20% off purchases as well as offering cash prizes, a Leather Jacket and 2 night stay at Peaks of Otter Lodge on the Blue Ridge Parkway. These prizes were drawn the next day after the Memorial Wall Dedication. As I have found out, there is always something going on here at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson. You can find out more about their many events and specials right here in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and at www.SmokinHarley.com.

2nd Annual AMCA Southern National Meet By: Alan Dockery While some of y’all were at the beach, us old bike guys were at Denton Farm Park, in Denton, NC for the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s Southern National Meet. This was the place to be if you were looking to buy old motorcycles and parts or just checkout machines you don’t see at bike night. More than just a show and swap meet, the AMCA folks rode their old bikes around the park too. The meet is mainly a Friday and Saturday event with vendors set up and ready for us who rolled in Saturday morning. Sunday is when they judge the bikes seeking national recognition. Folks were camped in the wooded area and the big, redeyed cicadas sang for everyone. I hope those of the Northern persuasion tried the Lexington-style BBQ, fried bologna sandwiches, and fresh fried pies while at Denton. According to Meet Coordinator, Bob Aton, Southern Hospitality was priority one and seemed to help make the meet a success. He said it was lots of work and he was short on staff, but glad to see exhibitors from Maine to Texas and several other states. Attendance was down since it threatened to rain. For y’all who stayed home, it only rained a few minutes. Just long enough for a break before starting the field events. It gave me a chance to check the bikes representing this year’s theme, Rats and Choppers. Yeah folks, this ain’t no snobby event. And for y’all really into old bikes some well-known restorers; such as Bill Rodencal, Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Restorer/Conservator, and Dale Walksler of Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, NC were there and available for advice. Saturday’s activities started with the historic women’s motorcycle club, Motor Maids, entering the park and cruising around the grounds. Next was a new feature, the narrated Parade of Antique Motorcycles. This was cool as riders pulled up to a spot, surrounded by folks, while each bike was described. After the brief rain shower, it was time for the field events. The AMCA had some games you don’t often see. And you should have seen guys competing on really old bikes with throttle and gears backwards from what most are familiar with, and foot clutches too. Clive Taylor won the Pin Drop and Dan Firkal took second. In the Motorcycle Joust, Firkal was the winner with Matt McManus runner up. Firkal and McManus were first and second in the Tire Toss also. Ramsey Allen crept across the field to beat Clive Taylor in the Slow Race.
Master of the Field that Saturday was Dan Firkal. After the games, bikes pulled in for the Concourse D’Ordinaire, a bike show for the common bike. Any bike could enter as long as it was old and ran. Mark Michaud took the Least Chrome plaque with his Suzuki Water Buffalo. Oldest Bike went to Bruce Lindsey for his 1923 Neracar. Rory Clark’s 1952 H-D WLA was judged Most Squalid. Most Chrome went to Steve Stivewalt for his Fat Daddy Honda CBX chopper. Eley Anderson’s tiny 1969 Honda QA 50 was the Most Cobbled. The 1973 H-D FLH of Will Moore had the Least Paint. Most Rustic was Richard Watson’s 1948 Indian Chief. Least Original went to the 1964 H-D Panhead of Johnny Crumpler. Sunday was the AMCA points judging show. According to Greg Manders, Deputy Judge, bikes start with 100 points and have 25 different categories in which they are examined by a team of judges. Motorcycles are either restored or original. AMCA motorcycles are judged as how they would look when they come out of the factory or off the show room floor. Points are deducted per category according to the number of items that are found incorrect. A bike must score at least an 85 to obtain an award. Forty motorcycles hit the field as six teams of judges went to work. Motorcycles ranged from a 1925 Henderson to a 1976 BMW R90/S. Harleys, Indians, Triumphs, Hondas, Nortons, and Velocette all filled the judging arena. In the end, 28 received awards ranging from a Junior first to Winner circles. Special chapter awards where also given out. Awards included: Oldest Bike Doc Schweinler’s 1925 Henderson, Longest Distance Ridden - Richard Watson, 972 miles on a Indian Chief, Most Unique 1st Place - Clare Frost’s 1971 Velocette and Most Unique 2nd Place - Garret Bekker’s 1956 Triumph Canadian Military. “I had a wonderful time at the Southern National and saw many beautiful motorcycles,” Manders said. “I did experience Lexington Bar B Que and found it great as well. While enjoying the BBQ I also had Cheerwine. First time for that and found it refreshing. Looking forward to next year to do it all again.” Be sure to put the AMCA Southern Nationals on your calendar for something deferent than the usual motorcycle events. The 2011 Triad Flight Of Honor Year Begins By: Renea Clutts Photos by: Troy Brown The first Triad Flight of Honor for the year of 2011 was short from being uneventful. On April 16th, a group of 100 heros set off to tour the World War II Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, and memorials in Washington, DC. Roughly 33 guardians, floating guardians, a flight doctor, two EMT’s, media representatives, team leaders, and a flight director joined them on this all day adventure. Their day began rainy and windy and that is exactly how it ended for them also. That certainly did not stop hundreds of family members, friends, and people who just wanted to thank them from attending their departure and arrival home. The weather cooperated with them while they were in Washington, however when they began their flight home the storm that had devastated many parts of NC reached them. They boarded their homeward bound plane, but were delayed for over two hours. Everyone at the Piedmont Triad Airport waited patiently to welcome them home. It was so wonderful to see so many people come together to show these heros exactly how much they loved them. It was also great to see so many children there. They had made all kinds of signs, flags, and huge banners. The delay did not stop them from waiting until the flight returned home. The way that I looked at it was, I owed them a lot more than just a few hours of my time and if

I needed to stay there until midnight that is exactly what was going to happen. It wasn’t until midnight but they did arrive around 10:30pm and you could certainly tell that they were glad to be home. This group of men and one woman greeted US with the biggest smiles and shook our hands and some actually THANKED US. There was no holding back the tears and emotions. To me, this IS the greatest generation and to see them being shown the respect that they deserved was so gratifying. It was worth every second of the wait to welcome them home and show them how much we appreciate them. If you have never been to a departure or arrival for any Flight of Honor, please take some time out of you day and go out and show these wonderful people how much you love and appreciate them. I PROMISE you that you will not regret it. The Triad Flight of Honor has three flights remaining for this season: September 17, October 15 and a VERY fitting November 11 (Veterans Day). Please visit FullThrottlemagazine.com > pictures > June 2011 > The 2011 Triad Flight of Honor Year Begins to view some wonderful photo’s that were taken on the morning and evening of this flight. Also, take the time out of your busy day to stop and thank an active or retired military person. They are the reason you have the freedom to live your life they way you do.

Rolling Thunder Spaghetti Dinner MIA, SFC Donald Shue, who recently came home and was laid to rest on Sunday, May 1st. All great reminders of those who have fought and never been accounted for which is what Rolling Thunder does - support for all POA/MIA issues. The Winston-Salem Chapter headed up by President, Cheryl Penn, works diligently to help bring those missing in wars past and present as well helping to identify remains that have been brought home through research and DNA testing. If you would like to know more about this great organization, you can find them at www.RollingThunder-NC6.com.
By: Caroline I feel very fortunate to know the Winston-Salem Rolling Thunder Chapter 6. I know that there are many great chapters out there but this group is very special. They truly are singlemindedly supportive of veterans. That is the reason I wanted to be at the American Legion Post 55 for their spaghetti dinner. Also, I happen to know these guys know how to cook. Not only did they have a great dinner, the group had an amazing display featuring recent veterans missing, in Iraq and Afghanistan. There was also a display honoring the latest

Run For The Son
By: Hank & Grace Richard (Eastern Area NC CMA Rep) We want to thank everyone who contributed to this year’s Run For The Son and made it such a successful event here in Eastern NC on Saturday, May 7th. Over the past twenty-three years the successful efforts of CMA members and friends have helped raise over $37,000,000 to help spread the Good News through Home Missions and CMA’s three different Missionary Partners. Here is a breakdown of how the funds are distributed, with 100% going into missions: 40% goes into CMA Home Missions for purchasing cups, tracts, and other outreach items; 20% goes to the Jesus Film Project; 20% goes to the Open Door Ministry; 20% goes to Missionary Ventures International. This year 8 of our NC chapters in the east gathered from locations all around the area, some as far as 143 miles (one way) to join together for this Celebration Gathering. A total of $53,522 was collected for Run For The Son by our local chapters. Thank you for your generous giving and the support towards CMA that you showed by reaching out to other folks and encouraging them to partner with CMA through donations to RFS in this annual effort. THANK YOU to the following chapters and their guests for making the day such a great time of fellowship and celebration (Raleigh -Triangle Travelers; Wilson - Fishers Of Men; Lillington - Christian Cyclists; Morehead City - Crystal Coast Messengers; Elizabeth City - Riders Of The Light; Greenville - NC Lighthouse Christian Riders; Jacksonville - Light Keepers; Wilmington - Knights Of The Light). A BIG “Thank You” goes out to McCall’s BBQ & Seafood in Goldsboro for hosting the event. What great service and a very friendly staff! With 138 people in our group there was still plenty of good food, and the buffet line moved at a good speed. We will definitely be back on May 5, 2012 for next year’s RFS Eastern NC Gathering. For those who would like to contribute to this annual
fundraiser, donations can be made throughout the year on the national CMA website www.cmausa.org, or you can contact a chapter nearest you. “Thank You” also goes out to John Loprete and Al Curtner for the amazing pictures throughout the event. You can see more event photos on their sites: http://johnscmaccmpics.shutterfly.com/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadrideral/ sets/72157626545255963/. No CMA event is complete without a little adventure, a lot of fun, and an element of surprise thrown in to end to the ride. This day was no different! Trophies went out this year to the following: Wilson - Fishers of Men for “Chapter With The Most Guests”; Greenville - NC Lighthouse Christian Riders for “Chapter With The Most First Time Participants”; Elizabeth City - Riders of the Light for “Farthest Traveling Chapter”; Billy Floyd took home the trophy for “The Newest Member Present”. There were also several door prizes handed out. BUT, the ultimate surprise for this event was in the parking lot at the end. A “Renewing of the Vows” Wedding Ceremony took place. Steve Hoag surprised his wife Kitty (of 20 yrs) with a Wedding Vow Renewal Ceremony for their 20th Wedding Anniversary with flowers, veil, and a flowered archway. There was even a thunder of about 10 bikes that roared by during the ceremony to add to the effects. Tim Fox (Central East NC CMA Area Rep) performed the ceremony. Congrats Steve & Kitty! Anyone curious as to how we will top this at next year’s event? (LOL) See you all next year! Blessings and thanks to all!

Rocky Mt. Harley-Davidson Bike Night
By: ChromeDoll Thursday, May 12th, kicked off the first bike night at Rocky Mt. Harley-Davidson. Although the weather was a bit chilly to be out on two wheels, it didn’t stop the many bikers that came out. The evening began with some vendors set up outside for you to walk around and visit and of course the Budweiser girls were there with some icy cold beverages. If your bike had a little road dust on it, the girls were there doing bikini bike washes and believe me they worked hard for it since I know they were freezing in their bikinis. Awesome BBQ sandwiches were also available to satisfy your appetite. While everyone was walking around enjoying each other’s company, the band “Monkey Foot” took the stage and began playing some great tunes. While making the rounds talking with people, taking pictures and stuff, I visited with Jimmy Lyles, the GM there at Rocky Mt. Harley-Davidson and he told me how their dealership is going to be an “official” stop for the Hoka Hey Challenge. We discussed the details of the challenge and the fact that there is a small group of people from Rocky Mt. who are riding in the challenge, “Team Rocky Mt.”. They even had a bike there that one of the teammates will be riding that was all decked out for

the Hoka Hey Challenge! As I finished up talking with Jimmy and walked outside, I could hear the roar. There was someone doing a burnout and, of course, we all walked over to the pit to check it out. As smoke filled the air, and the noise was getting louder and louder there it was, “POP”. He burned his tire out. The crowd applauded and of course the cameras were snapping! A little later, the dealership put their own bike in the burnout pit with a little twist. As he was revving it up and the smoke filled the air, we all looked at what we thought we saw, and then we had to take a double look. There were flames coming out of the bike. Yep, they rigged it so we all had a little treat while he did the burnout. Considering the weather the way it was, the first bike night of the season was a true success. Thanks to Rocky Mt. Harley-Davidson, Budweiser, and the Blue Knights MC for putting on a great event. We had a great time listening to the band, visiting with other bikers and just being out. Continue to read The Carolina’s Full Throttle Magazine for future bike night dates and other events. Until next time, remember; Don’t hide it, Ride It!!!

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine
Welcome Home Donnie MIA – SFC Donald M. Shue
By: Mark Terry, Assistant Director, Statesville HOG At 7am on Saturday April 30, 2011 a group of approximately 300 motorcycles gathered at Tilley’s Harley-Davidson in Statesville, NC for what would surely be the most important ride any of us had ever taken. The day was finally here that the Shue family had been waiting on for 42 years since November 1969 when their son, brother, and uncle was lost serving the Army as a Green Beret in Vietnam. Special thanks has to be given to Mickey Jones the nephew of SFC Donald M. Shue for wanting to bring the return home of his uncle to the attention of everyone in North Carolina. As a fellow rider Mickey contacted Jeff Phillips, the President of Rolling Thunder NC2, in Troutman, NC and asked for a motorcycle escort of the remains of his uncle from Charlotte Douglas International Airport to the funeral home. That is where many thanks are due to Jeff Phillips for going far beyond what anyone could have imagined to get the word out and solicit the help of local and state agencies to help make this a blessed event that not only honored Donnie and his family, but honored all Veterans, especially Vietnam Vets, and gave them the welcome they deserved and did not get 40 years ago. At 7:45am the group pulled out of Statesville under the escort of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department and the Cabarrus County Sherriff’s Department. These motorcycle officers, like us, were honored to be a part of this ride and gave us a first class escort all the way. They totally shut down I-77 south bound from Statesville through Charlotte to Billy Graham Parkway and we proceeded to the National Guard Armory adjacent to the airport. Upon arrival we found that our group was very small compared to the number of bikes already there. The total number of bikes in attendance was estimated at just over 2000. Once parked at the armory we had a chance to go inside and sign the register and to view the flag draped casket, which had arrived the day before from Hawaii and was under guard by the Army Green Beret. By the time we got though the long
line it was time for the casket to be loaded into the hearse. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop and all vets were at attention saluting and all civilians had their right hand over their heart. Now the time had finally come for Donnie to complete the last miles of a long journey home. At this point the deputies that did such a great job of taking us to Charlotte were joined by dozens of Charlotte Police Officers and Mecklenburg County Sherriff’s Deputies and North Carolina State Highway Patrol. At the front of the group was the Rolling Thunder POW-MIA truck followed by the first bike ridden by Mickey Jones with his daughter as passenger. Mickey and his daughter were riding a new Harley Street Glide donated by Don Tilley of Tilley’s Harley-Davidson in Statesville, NC. Directly to his Right was Jeff Phillips of Rolling Thunder followed by approximately 15 bikes, which were all riding point as members of the President’s Group representing all the different bike organizations present. My wife and I were honored to be in the group as the sixth bike from the front representing HOG and Tilley’s HarleyDavidson Statesville. Following the President’s Group was the Hearse followed by the color guard, all the Rolling Thunder members, the Patriot Guard Riders and all other groups and riders. As we turned left onto Billy Graham Parkway toward I-85, I was pleasantly surprised to see so many people standing along the side of the road to pay their respects. There were men, women, and children waving American flags and vets in full military dress standing at attention. When we made the right hand turn down the on ramp to I-85 North, I realized that the officers had totally shut down I-85 northbound and we took the center lane of the five lane interstate at approximately 25 miles per hour. I’m sure that by the time we got all 2000 plus motorcycles onto I-85 that traffic must have been backed up half way to South Carolina. At that moment I heard Jeff Phillips come on the CB radio and ask where the helicopters were. Not knowing exactly what he was

to escort SFC Donald M. Shue from the funeral home to his final resting place in Carolina Memorial Park with full military honors. Donnie, Welcome Home. May you be at peace knowing you are finally home. Your mission is complete and we all thank you for a job well done. The return of SFC Donald M. Shue brings the number of missing soldiers from North Carolina during the Vietnam conflict from 43 to 42. For more information about SFC Donald M. Shue visit: http://goo.gl/JPvke. We learned that two more have been found and identified and will be returned home over the next two months. A special thanks is due to Rolling Thunder POW*MIA and to Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) for their hard work to find and identify these lost service men. According to Jeff Phillips only 1/3 of the men that served in Vietnam are still alive today. There are a total of 1700 still missing from across the nation and time is running out. Please help to keep this on the forefront and may we never leave any service men and women behind ever again. There are remains of soldiers in Hawaii today that cannot be identified. If you know anyone that has a family member MIA from Vietnam, please encourage them to contact JPAC and do DNA testing so that all of these soldiers like Donnie can be identified and returned home to their loved ones. God Bless America.

referring to I got an answer quickly as I looked skyward and saw two Apache helicopters overhead to give us an aerial escort to Concord, NC. There could not have been a more fitting honor for a soldier finally home after so long. I have to say that this was extremely emotional and my wife and I had tears in our eyes and I am sure our fellow riders did as well. There were people standing on almost every overpass we went under saluting and waving American flags. We continued up I-85 with the heavy police escort along with the Apache helicopters overhead. I do not want to leave out the large number of Firefighters in full dress uniforms we also saw along the way with flags flying high off the fire trucks and also the EMT’s present paying their respects and helping to block side streets and on ramps so we could proceed safely. As we moved closer to Concord, the city streets were lined with hundreds of people and I was moved by all those whose lips we could read saying “Thank You”. When we got to town there was a large stage platform setup on our left with the family, the mayor, members of the city council, State Senate Representatives, and members of the military and National Guard, along with a young couple that just lost their son in the military last year. The president’s group lead by Jeff Phillips went up and we all had a chance to introduce ourselves and the organization we represented to the family, pay our respects and tell the family members what an honor is was for us to be a part of bringing their loved one home. After about a one-hour ceremony, where all the dignitaries spoke, the procession continued on this time with the family limousines in the group. The Apache helicopters were still overhead as we continued to Kannapolis for another celebration. A short time later, through crowd packed streets, we arrived in Kannapolis, NC at Veterans Park for another celebration for this American hero. There again were many dignitaries present to speak along with the local High School Band. One of the highlights here was seeing the family receive Donnie’s High School Diploma. You see, Donnie asked his father when he was in the 11th grade if he could quit school and join the Army and serve his country in Vietnam. The school concluded that Donnie had met all the requirements and deserved his diploma. This really touched me a lot because there were so many back in the time that were dodging the draft every way possible and this young man volunteered to serve. Not only that but he applied to the Green Beret in which only 3% are accepted and you have to prove you are worthy, and he did. After about an hour, it was time for this escort to proceed to Whitley’s Funeral Home and complete our ride for the day. Upon arrival, Rolling Thunder stood at attention as the Army Green Beret removed the casket from the Hearse and carried it into the funeral home. Our ride was over for that day, but our love and respect for this soldier, his family and all who have served and are serving our great nation will be in our hearts forever. On Sunday May 1, 2011 Jeff Phillips lead another contingent from Tilley’s Harley-Davidson in Statesville to Kannapolis

By: DPapaBear Nifong OK, for all of you sport bike enthusiasts, Garwood Custom Cycles in Lexington, N.C. is available for all of your bike needs. Garwood has been in business for over 15 years, servicing and customizing sport bikes and ATVs. They have built several bikes in support of our service men and women and this year have a bike for the Triad affiliate of Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The bikes are displayed across the state and at the Progressive International Motorcycle Shows like at Daytona during bike week and other show locations up and down the east coast. The bikes are then auctioned off or sold with all proceeds going to the respective charities. In 2009, they created a Special Ops bike in honor of Special Warfare Officer First Class (SEAL) Joshua T. Harris, and the year prior built a military tribute bike that was purchased by J. C. France, a race driver in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series, with proceeds going to the Wounded Warriors Project in honor of Harris. They even offer storage, maintenance, and have any bike bought from them by military members deployed overseas road ready upon their return. Garwood Custom Cycles are also co-sponsors of the “Josh T. Harris Veteran Memorial Ride and Event” to take place at the Davidson County Fairgrounds in Lexington, NC, set for June 18th. Visit JTHMemorialRide.com or GarwoodCustomCycles. com for more info. So whatever you need for your sport bike or ATV, give Garwood Custom Cycles a call or stop by and check out their inventory of bikes and parts. They are located at 441 Pine Top Road in Lexington, NC, just off business 85. Tell them you saw their ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. I hope to see everyone on June 18th for the J. T. Harris event. Take care, ride safe, and have fun along the way.

By: Wendy Rogers It was another great ride with The Dogwood Festival event of Hogs and Rags on April 30th. This was the 6th one going and the event keeps getting bigger and better every year. All proceeds from this event will be donated to three great organizations; The American Cancer Society Foundation, the Kids Can Read Foundation, and now also to include the Shriners Hospital. All makes and models of motorcycles, convertibles, and muscle cars lined up and came to join us for a great ride and a great cause. There were 177 bikes and 22 cars. What a great turn out! The weather could not have been any better! This was a fully escorted ride all the way to South Carolina. The 6th Annual Hogs and Rags Ride started in Fayetteville, NC at Cape Fear Harley-Davidson with a great breakfast, donuts, and coffee, and then headed out to Broadway At The Beach for a wonderful Lunch at Laundry’s. At Broadway at the Beach there was great socializing, music, door prizes and a reverse raffle for a chance to win $2500. They drew 5 names and eliminated down to three people. At that point they decided to split the money and they each walked away with $833 each! The door prizes were all great, too. The Hogs and Rags committee would really like to thank their sponsors again this year for all that they do for this event and all their support. It couldn’t be done without them. They would also like to thank all the people that came and supported this cause. Anybody can have a ride, but it takes all kinds of things to be put in place and happen before it really becomes a success, and without our sponsors, and the people that come out and ride on these events, it would never be possible. Thanks to everyone! Visit www.HogsandRags.com and watch The Carolina’s Full Throttle Magazine for future events.

By: Grant The weather is warm, the bikes have sat under cover most of the extremely cold winter, and it’s definitely time to ride. Bike nights are a summer given, but a great one is in Salisbury, North Carolina. Each Tuesday Bike Night at Uncle Buck’s Pub & Grub is getting bigger and bigger. This area has been with out a bike night for a long time. I remember Ted’s Kick’n Chicken bike nights back about 10 years ago and how many riders we had there each week. I have had to beg restaurants to try a bike night to no avail until Scott and Judy decided to go it last year at a new location and I think it’s really paid off for them. On Tuesday night April 19th, this summer’s nights began. Tilley H-D’s HOG meeting was that night and a group of us made Uncle Buck’s our dinning destination. We knew it was kick off night with DJ Fast Freddie outside and plenty of bikes lining the street. I counted 98 bikes lining Innes Street. It looked like a party. Uncle Bucks has become a rider destination 6 days a week with a Texas flair to all the menu items, cold beer, and a full bar. Tuesdays will be rocking this entire summer, so ride on over and have a drink and some good pub grub. Uncle Bucks is located at 115 East Innes Street, right before the square in Salisbury, NC. Look for the picnic tables on the sidewalk. Saturdays are also a favorite time to ride in. There are sports on the TV’s and lots of other bikers sitting around the outside tables to talk to and watch the cages go by. Give Uncle Bucks Pub and Grub a try, Tell em you read about Uncle Buck’s Pub & Grub in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. See their ad in this issue and you can pick a copy up there every month.

5th Annual Carolina Classic Motorcycle Show
Best Of Show went to a 1965 Honda CB 450KO owned by Jim Bright from Hickory, NC. By: Mark Infield May 7 was a beautiful day for the 5th Annual Carolina Classic Motorcycle Show at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC. The event is open to motorcycles 20 years or older and they began to register at 9am. This was the second year that I have attended this show and the entries seemed to be up from last year. I enjoy this show because there is such a variety of makes and models of bikes. The setting just seems to suit this genre well. There were trains taking kids for short rides around the rail yard all day and train horns dominated the airwaves from time to time. Apparently the word about this show is getting out as it was reported that people from Raleigh and Atlanta were in attendance. It was a great bunch of people, too. Everyone was gawking at motorcycles that they rode when they were younger or wished they could own today. This is not your average bike show where there are lines and lines of Harleys. There were mini bikes, dirt bikes, a 3 wheeled Honda ATC, classics, antiques, choppers, and customs. The awards ceremony was simple, but the awards themselves were any thing but. They were hand crafted out of orphaned motorcycle parts and mounted on a wooden base. There was a story to go along with each one, just as there was with the bikes. The winners were: American: Dave Mims, 1929 Indian Scout, British: Dave Mims, 1954 Triumph T110 (last year’s Best Of Show), Competition: Larry Wilson, 1971 BSA 500, Custom: Bobby Eller, 1966 Triumph “Devil Woman.”, European: Tom Konsler, 1975 Hercules W2000, Japanese 499cc and under: Wayne Sykes, 1975 Honda CB400F, Japanese 500cc and above: Randall Washington, 1975 Honda GC1000, Rat bike: Jim Bedillion, 1971 HD SS350 (on a trailer), Retro: Larry Wilson, 2009 Triumph Bonneville. Best Of Show went to a 1965 Honda CB 450KO owned by Jim Bright from Hickory, NC. I took a picture of nearly every bike there and if you would like to view them, go to FullThrottleMagazine.com > pictures > June 2011 > 5th Annual Carolina Classic Motorcycle Show.

By Caroline For the second year in a row, Triad Pleasure Riders Annual Bike Show was held at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson on May 7th, and I think it was the best one yet. Anyone that has attended this event knows that the competition is fierce and the prizes are enviable. There were plenty of folks on hand for all the festivities – enough to give away $257 in a 50/50 drawing. Congratulations to Lynn Isenhouer who had his Motorcycle Tours trailer set up and won that. Not bad for an afternoon’s work. There were other good friends there, too - Eldena from Bob Karney Law Firm and the folks with Superior Insurance had display booths. Big Bump and the Stun Gunz provided the musical entertainment. Congratulations to the stars of the show - the bike show winners. Charlie Smith won Dyna and Touring, Softail - Paul Watson, Trike - Angie Eli, Sportster - David Dyson, Ladies - Missy Dawson, Custom - Steven Katt, Metric - Relentless Cycles, Pre Evo and Best in Show - Ken Hall. If you want to get in on the best bike show in town, you can contact Ken Hudson, President of the Triad Pleasure Riders at tdhudson@triadrr.com or check out The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for the 2012 event. Triad Pleasure Riders Annual Bike Show is held in May each year.

Maybe you can explain it to me? I’m a little confused! How come the first weekend of the Myrtle Beach Rally that we don’t have any more, that everyone is still going to but the town says doesn’t exist; is now the same weekend as the Thunder In The Smokies Rally in Maggie Valley that is good but seems to be on the wrong weekend? Then the next weekend, which is the last weekend of the MB Rally, you have the Twin Rivers Rally in New Bern that doesn’t have a beach and exist but not many go to. Seems confusing to me! So, which way did you go? Some from the west went east, some from the east went west, some in the middle went in circles and a lot just stayed home! If you went to MB you missed a good time in the Smokies, if you went to the Smokies you missed a good time at MB, if you went to Twin Rivers I hope you had a good time there! Maybe you even made them all. It’s still kinda confusing! Some say its better this way; everyone has a choice. Well, I remember when everyone still had a choice and the choice was much simpler. Daytona or stay home! Myrtle Beach or stay home! Cherokee or stay home! Laconia or stay home! Sturgis or stay home! Now, that’s not confusing at all is it? I guess I’m getting to old to appreciate progress; too old to have to try to figure out whether to go east or west, in circles, or stay home and too old to see the advantage of “change.” I
like things simpler and less confusing! So does Jesus! He made things very simple for us. It’s not confusing at all; heaven or hell, your choice! You can choose to go up or down, smoking or non smoking, light or darkness, joy or sadness, peace or torture, life or death, eternally. To choose heaven simply pray the biker’s prayer on this page, mean it in your heart, and speak it out loud that you chose life! To choose hell, simply do nothing!

By: Mark Infield On Friday, April 29th we got a call from Jerry Crouse, the Allstate Insurance agent in Jamestown, NC. He informed us that on Monday, May 2nd, Dave Perewitz of Perewitz Cycle Fab was delivering the Allstate Motorcycle Insurance Pro Street Motorcycle to the winner of the year – long promotion. David Morris of Jamestown, NC, rode his 1991 Honda ST1100 to Americade at Lake George, NY last summer and entered the drawing. Of the 80,000 entries in this promotion, David was declared the winner. We rode over to Jerry Crouse’s Allstate Insurance office and met Jerry, David, and other officials from Allstate Insurance and it wasn’t long before Dave Perewitz pulled up with the bike. It was long and low and, of course, was sporting an OhSo-Orange (PPG) Perewitz one off paint job. It was sweeeet! Other features included a 100cu in Indian Power Plus engine in a Rolling Thunder frame, a 240 Metzeler out back and a 21” front wheel both from PM, PM brakes, BDL 3” belt drive hooked up to a Baker right side drive 6 speed transmission. Dave Perewitz took the time to go over the bike with David and even hooked him up with a full-face helmet custom painted to match the bike. David took it for a spin around the parking lot and came back grinning. Now all that was left was the paper work. I couldn’t be of any help with that, so I headed back to the office. I hope that David enjoys this Perewitz Custom. 3rd Annual Jimmy Halacheff Memorial Ride For Disabled American Veterans
By: Tonya Halacheff On Saturday, May 7th, Bill’s Sports Bar and the Halacheff family set out with nearly 40 bikes to raise money for Disabled American Veterans. It was a beautiful day to ride. We started the day with “DJ” TJ Childs keeping us entertained until time to go. We left Bill’s at 12:15 and headed out for four stops and back to Bill’s for the after party, food, and raffles. We arrived back at Bill’s around 3:45 and we had a great meal provided by the Halacheff family and several of our great friends. Bill’s provided grilled chicken and BBQ cooked by Charlie Cottle and Doug Stacey. Me, my mom, and my sister Judy brought potato salad, baked beans, deviled eggs, and desserts. My mom, Lynn Halacheff, peeled 25 pounds of potatoes for this event and shelled nearly 8 dozen eggs. Thank goodness for her! Leesa Holley made green beans. Doug Stacey and Carol also provided potato salad and some great desserts. “Big Al” Champion brought us some pies and Kyle Pickard baked 100 cookies! In other words, we had a lot of food. We raffled of a 32” Samsung flat screen TV donated by Carolina Nissan. and it was won by Robert Conn. We also raffled a hot air balloon ride donated by Ken Draughn of Aerial Impressions, which was won by Doug Stacey. We could not have done this without the help of local businesses. We had gym memberships, tanning minutes, oil changes, haircuts, food gift certificates, Wal-Mart gift cards, T-shirts, gift baskets, and many other door prizes all donated by area businesses. Jim and Lynn Halacheff, Jimmy’s mom and dad, provided a food processor and several other kitchen accessories to raffle off as well. Mike Cox won best hand and Tori Apple won the worst hand.
Live Music All Weekend Including: TC Phillips

Cameron Tew won the 50/50. They all donated their winnings back to the DAV. Two bands provided entertainment for the remainder of the evening. We started with Honest James. The band is named in honor of Jimmy Halacheff. Honest James was just one of his many nicknames. One of his best friends, Mark Kimbro, is the drummer and they donated their time and talents for the event. The second band was Nite Kats, one of our all time favorite bands. Ronnie from Nite Kats is an old friend of Jimmy’s and honored him by playing “Inside Out”, one of Jimmy’s old favorite songs, We want to thank Bill’s bartenders Belinda Jones and Bryant Perry. They worked their rear ends off to make sure no one was thirsty. I also want to thank Bill Cross for all his help getting this ride off the ground and Vikki Cross for helping me register all the riders. Also Judy Halacheff Turner, Kyle Pickard, and Sybil Goodson for helping me sell the t-shirts and raffle tickets. All in all we had a great time! A lot of friends and family gathered to remember Jimmy and we raised a total of $1284 for Disabled American Veterans. Bill’s Sports Bar and the Halacheff family want to say “THANK YOU” to all who participated and made all this possible.

Officer Down Ride
By: Steve (Get Out Of Jail Free) Rowland Today I decided to ride to Beach House Harley-Davidson for the Officer Down Ride. I couldn’t get out until after the ride started, so I just went to last stop. All this started back In October of 2005, with a small group of motorcycle enthusiasts and other interested people from the area. They met at Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson to discuss and organize an event to help raise money and awareness of law enforcement, firefighters, and EMS personnel who have been injured in the line of duty. A great team organizes this annual ride. It’s made up of law enforcement, fire officials, motorcycle enthusiasts, and fund administrators who decide on all the event activities. They also decide the qualification of applicants who apply for help. Rick and Jan Noyes owners Carolina Coast HD have been the lead sponsors and have donated $15,000 to the fund since its beginning in addition to all the help they have provided, like having the beginning and final stops at the Harley dealerships. The Officer Down Ride draws people from all over the area who are interested in showing their true appreciation for those men and women who protect the community from harm daily. Contributions can be made at any time to the “Officer Down” Donor Advised Fund by calling the North Carolina Community Foundation at 919-828-4387 or contacting them through their NCCommunityFoundation.org/. The Fund accepts tax-exempt contributions at any time.
They said they had about 100 registered with 75 of them on bike. Today was one of those days you have to decide whether you should ride or not. I drove. One group of bikers had to stop due to a storm band that went though. I know a lot of bikes didn’t make it to Beach House. I guess they headed back home. If you remember that day there was about 60 tornadoes that hit NC. I think they were really lucky that not a drop of rain fell at the Harley shop. I saw rain suits starting to come off as some of the bikes showed up. I’m glad they had a police escort. Renea King, Jeff Trip, and Billy did a good job on this event. DJPeg was out front playing some good music. They also had plenty of door prizes to give out. Mousers Seafood cooked for the event and the food was good. The “No Class Bike Show” did have a winner. Gary Folsom won the 4-foot trophy. Second place was Carl; he won a signed baseball from Trot Nixon, outfielder for the Boston Red Sox. I’m sure there’s a big Thanks for everyone for coming out and supporting this ride. I have about hundred pictures of today’s event on line. Ray Price Racing Is Top Qualifier At The ROCK
Team also captures top speed at 2011 AHDRA Carolina Spring Nitro Nationals The Ray Price Nitro Harley Race Team returned home to Rockingham Dragway for the 2011 AHDRA Carolina Spring Nitro Nationals at Rockingham, NC April 30 – May 1. Known to race fans all over as “The ROCK”, the track’s signature is the Ray Price Harley-Davidson branded bridge. The team has brought excitement to his fans for many years by putting on some of the most memorable passes down Rockingham’s quarter mile track. Always one to put on a show for the legion of Ray Price fans who come to witness the performance of the1,000 horsepower top fuel nitro Harley, the team did not disappoint. On its very first qualifying pass, The Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Akea sponsored drag bike set the bar for the rest of the field with an incredible 6.344 ET at 228.77 mph. The time and speed held to give the team the number one qualifying spot for both ET and MPH. The difference between strong performances and wins is often decided by track condition and or lane choice. Going into Sunday’s eliminations the team selected the right lane, the same lane that the team ran their best qualifying time. With Tommy Grimes in the pilot’s seat, he posted a first round win with a 6.423 ET and an even more incredible 228.42 MPH. In the second round the team went back to the right lane based on the success of the previous round, but a “bad spot” appeared to have developed at the 350 foot mark causing the Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Akea sponsored drag bike to spin the tire,
NEW T! UC PROD
preventing the team from moving into final round action. While disappointing, the team did post the fastest speed during eliminations with the 228.42 mph pass. Even with the early exit, Ray Price’s fans showed their gratitude for a great show by standing and cheering as the team came down the return road. “Rockingham is always an exciting race for the Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Akea sponsored race team as we always want to put on the best show for our fans”, remarked Price. Ray Price will get another chance to capture a win for the hometown fans when the team returns to Rockingham October 8 - 9. In the meantime the team will prepare for its next race when it heads north to Norwalk, OH for the Ohio Bike Week Nationals on June 4-5. The Ray Price Motorsports team sends sincere thanks to all their sponsors for their support for the 2011 race season. They include our Primary Sponsors: Akea, Ray Price Harley-Davidson, with special thanks to our Associate Sponsor Raleigh HOG and our Support Sponsors: Nationwide Insurance, CP Pistons, Royal Purple, Barnett Clutches & Cables, Autolite Sparkplugs, Mickey Thompson Tires, Gates Belts, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, JIMS USA, Industrial Machine Solutions, and Wiley X. By: Gary Steelman May 7th was a beautiful day for Crossfire United Methodist Church’s Spring Rally. The day began with tunes from the Crossfire House Band, games and activities for the kids. Face paintings and temporary tattoos adorned many of the smiling faces, younger and older. The event was free of charge with free food and fellowship for the church and the biker community. The smell of barbequed chicken wafting through the midday air beckoned to all with tangy, sweet-hot aromas. The chicken lasted all day and was free for the asking. Thanks to Bootleggers BBQ for donating the bird for this event. The bike games started the afternoon activities: balloon toss, slow race, tater hunt and egg race. Spectators and riders alike enjoyed the games, The Red Cross set up shop inside the church, collecting pints of blood. The blood drive was a success with over twenty units collected. Thanks to the Red Knights, who participated in the rally, along with the Wilkes Fire Department for the fire trucks put on display. The Wings Of Glory also turned out to support Crossfire. Thanks, guys, for the help. Keep watch in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for more events from Crossfire U.M.C. “A place for bikers.”

Bikers For Bikers Foundation 1st Annual Spring Rally
By: Sunshine Attending the Bikers For Bikers (BFBF) 1st Annual Spring Rally May 13-15th was a true honor for me. Before I left out I went to their website to get more info on what the foundation was all about. What I read, touch my heart and I wanted to know why would someone using their own money, with the economy the way it is today, try and take on such an enormous act of kindness. After reading his story, I knew for sure it was going to be an honor meeting with Mickey Carter, Founder, and Mickey’s girlfriend, Jeanie Hood, Secretary/Treasurer. Mickey Carter started this foundation after a motorcycle accident, which left him out of work and not able to provide for his family. Mickey, like so many other bikers, was too proud to ask for help. So, he decided to start a foundation to help other injured or sick bikers and needy children. Saving all his pocket change, after a year he had enough saved to go through all the legalities to make it a legal nonprofit foundation His mission is that “No biker brother or sister or needy child go without food, electricity, or medical needs while suffering from and injury”. After arriving at Shakori Hills in Pittsboro, NC, my first goal was to meet with Jeanie Hood. She was an angel. While speaking with her, I could hear the dedication and passion in her voice. “Our number one goal is to help out injured bikers,” she told me. She shared how hard it was for them to pick and chose which ones needed help the most and having to turn away others in need because of lack of funds. Then I spoke with Mickey Carter, (Bear, as his friends like to call him), who shared with me more stories of how they have helped injured bikers. Like how BFBF helped a sick biker pay for his oil/heat cost because he could not work. They helped with Father Christmas, by donation and toys for sick kids in the hospital. BFBF also helped a lady biker with medical bills so she could get the care she needed. “With over 6 million bikers, if they all could donate just $1 a year or buy a patch, then they wouldn’t have to pick and chose from the most needy”, Mickey stated. It’s amazing what a dollar can do, when more are added to it. They both spoke about the wonderful charter members, sponsors and supporters also mentioning that they have ride captains all over the US. I was truly amazed. With Storm clouds and scattered showers passing though, the rally was getting started. The weather may have held others back, but the bikers that came out to show their support, were just has wonderful as Shakori Hills. Everyone I met felt like I had known them for years. You could feel the same passion in each of them for BFBF. Walking around meeting and making some wonderful new friends, I found that Shakori
Hills was like a treasure chest, something to see everywhere you looked. I was having a wonderful time and so were all the others bikers that braved the weather to show their support. The Battle Of The Bands: A New Day Rising, Clay Kings Trio, Portable Heros, Blue Lightening Trio, Total Strangers, Donnaha Station (Winners of the Battle of the Bands & $500), and Tommy Thunderfoot & The Accelerators, the official rally band, provided some awesome music, and all the great food made for a spectacular Friday night. Saturday morning came with some fun entertainment. Dan Shanahan (Dan the Man) VP Coordinator/Director, got up on stage and read from the Spokes & Joke section of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, which everyone enjoyed. Then came time for the “Blessing Of The Bikes” provided by Rev. Nelson Wright of Painted Highway Ministries in Burlington, NC. There was also a bike contest and tattoo contest, which were really cool and a 50/50 drawing and lots of prizes. Everyone was having a blast. But none could have imagined the next event that was going to happen. Rev. Nelson and his wife, Rev. Jamie Wright gathered all of us around to make an announcement. There was going to be a wedding. Wow! Mickey and Jeanie were getting married. This was a surprise for everyone in attendance and an even bigger one for Jeanie, who did not know about it either. This made the whole event that much more special. What an honor to be a part of such a special occasion. The wedding service was beautiful and there could not have been a more amazing couple to watch take their wedding vows. With lots of hugs and congrats to the new couple, the party began. For some of us, it went on all night. Sunday morning we all went to the Coffee House for church service provided by Rev. Nelson and Rev. Jamie Wright. After church, Mickey and Jeanie were honored, which was very touching. The reason for this rally and all the supporters, sponsors, Charter members, and bikers proved not to be more of a question of why, but for me, a proud new Charter member, it was living proof of how special the biker community is and shows how they really care about each other. A special thanks to Charter Member Joel Roberson, Photographer, who invited me to the rally and for taking some awesome photos. To Mickey & Jeanie Carter, Congratulation and best wishes for you both and for the “Bikers For Bikers Foundation“. I had an awesome time and can’t wait to see all of you again. To find out more info on BFBF or to make a donation or buy a patch. By: Scott Wicker, Terri Wall, & Kay Teague On Sunday, April 17th, the Compassionate Bikers Of Alamance County presented the 3rd Annual Miles For Mutts Benefit Ride to provide funds to the Humane Society of Alamance County. The ride, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 16th, left the Outer Limits Saloon in Graham instead of Davis Harley-Davidson due to bad storms on Saturday. Over 100 bikes and riders participated in this year’s event, which made its 1st stop at Cuz’s Tavern in Hopedale. Great food was provided at Cuz’s and there were several door prizes given away while there. The ride then proceeded safely to The Old Ski Lodge for the after party and awesome entertainment by the Buffalo Theory Band. Lisa and David Albright had the best hand of the run and donated their winnings to the Belk family who recently lost an infant child. The donation went to provide proper funeral services for the infant. There weren’t enough tickets sold to raffle off the 2011 Street glide so the Miles for Mutts, The Road Continues Event, will be held at Davis Harley-Davidson on Saturday, August 20th, at their Summer Bash Event pending the sale of at least 275 tickets to enable the Compassionate Bikers of Alamance County to hold their reverse raffle for the bike. Anyone can contact Terri at 336-380-6892 or Kay at 336-437-2099 to obtain a raffle ticket or go by Davis Harley-Davidson, the Old Ski Lodge, or The Outer Limits Saloon. Thanks to everyone at Cuz’s Tavern for the great food and their hospitality. Thanks also to Roxanne and Marty Cox at the Old Ski Lodge for a great place for the after party. A big special “Thank You” goes to everyone at the Outer Limits Saloon for providing the starting point for the ride on such a short notice. A special thanks to Dick, our emcee for all the Miles For Mutts Events. In this tough economic time we are truly humbled at the mere thought of the loss of our home, or our job, but we cannot lose sight of the less fortunate, the pets that have been surrendered by their owners, or those who have NEVER had a safe home, the guarantee of another meal, or another day. If anyone can assist with a monetary donation or even find it in you heart to adopt or foster an animal, please do. There is no way we can express our most sincere thanks to everyone who has given so much to this event. Thank You and God Bless You! Ride Safe!

7th Annual CBA Central District Spoker Run By: Giselle AKA Bad Kitten April 9th was cold, misty, and dreary. It was not a morning that I would most likely be compelled to get the bike out and ride. But this is the day of the yearly CBA Spoker Run and come rain, snow, or cold, Roger and I were heading out to Iron Horse Motorcycles in Monroe, NC to join up with all our brothers and sisters. It’s an hour and 45 minute ride from High Point to Monroe so we had to get an early start to make registration at 10 am and first bikes out at 11am. It stayed cold and drizzly until we got on 485 when the sun made a most welcome appearance. Needless to say, I was so relieved to see it! The temps started to warm a little as we pulled up to Iron Horse. We signed in and drew our first card and had a chance to chat with friends we hadn’t seen in awhile. We were joined at Iron Horse, by our brothers and sisters from the Charlotte Chapter and we prepared to head out to Old Skool Customs in Marshville, NC to draw our next card. Old Skool Customs is a really cool bike shop and I got to make the acquaintances of Scooter and JD, the shop’s mascots. A couple of doors down they also have a clothing and gee gaw store. In the bike shop, there was a beautiful custom built shovelhead Lowrider that I fell in love with. It was built by Jesse and I was hoping that he’d part with it. He said it was his bike but he’d be more than happy to build me one just like it. I
“One Percenter Land” A novel by William C. Duncan
In 1968 the Motor City Motorcycle Club is growing, but a fierce rivalry with another club forces Derek Simmons to flee underground with his girlfriend, college professor’s daughter Janie Bedford. Ten years later Janie returns home only long enough to leave her infant son with her parents. Chris Bedford grows up to become a criminologist studying outlaw motorcycle groups. His mother’s reappearance draws the FBI’s interest. They’d like Chris to investigate the club and find his father, but they’re not telling him everything. There’s a forty year long crime spree they’ve linked to the club, and Chris can help them end it if the club’s traditional rivals don’t end him first. The young criminologist is about to get more than he bargained for… “One Percenter Land” by North Carolina Concerned Bikers Association member William C. WILL be seeing Jesse again soon! We then headed out through the country to Locust, NC the sun had gone back in the clouds, the wind started to blow a bit harder and it got downright cold. When we reached Tailgators, everyone got their leathers out for the ride to our next stop. Tailgators was a really nice restaurant and bar. We drew a card, had a quick drink, tried to defrost a little, then it was off to Stooges in Mint Hill, where we were to meet up with the rest of the Central District Chapters. Stooges is a really cool little biker bar in Mint Hill and when we pulled into the parking lot, the place was hopping. We drew our cards and hung around a bit to chew the fat with our other chapter’s members. Randolph, Davidson, Alamance, Chatham, Cabarrus/Rowan, and the Triad CBA Chapters joined us there. The sun was still hiding and it was looking like rain but we all hung in there. Our last stop was the Monroe Moose Lodge where we drew our final hand and ate barbeque chicken, potato salad, baked beans, and coleslaw. After a sumptuous meal, the awards were given out. The best hand winners were: Randolph - Junior, Alamance - Razz, Chatham - Mikey, Davidson - Moon, Cabarrus/Rowan - Tom, South Piedmont - CW, Charlotte - Gary, and Triad - Carol. The winner of the $500 prize was Barbara with the Charlotte Chapter and the 50/50 winner was Bruce. The winner of the chapter with the most riders was again- South Piedmont, with 61 bikes. Winning only by one. The plaque was awarded to Keith Swann, Chapter President. All in all it was a great event as usual. I want to thank the men and women of the Monroe Moose Lodge for helping to make this a great ending to an always-fun run. Join us next year in April 2012 for the 8th Annual CBA Spoker Run. Check your Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for dates and meeting places for this run. Hope to see you all there and remember, “ Look Twice, Save a Life…Motorcycles are Everywhere”, and “Let Those Who Ride Decide.”

13th Annual Kerri D. Efird Memorial Scholarship Ride
By: Charles Holcombe Something told me not to miss this ride, and I’m so glad I didn’t! Over the past few weeks, I saw an ad in the local newspaper placed by Scott Efird for a charity ride. This year it dawned on me that Scott is the Mayor of Locust in Stanly County, NC. Our Chapter, Uwharrie CBA/ABATE, sent a copy of a proclamation concerning Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month for May 2011 to every Mayor in the county and Scott was the first to reply with an officially signed copy. I wanted to know more about who this man is and what the ride is all about! After all, a motorcycle-loving Mayor can’t be bad at all, so off we went to the 13th Annual Kerri D. Efird Memorial Scholarship Ride! It was a cool 62º in New London, NC as we prepared to ride out. We met the members of the Uwharrie Chapter CBA at the Corner Pocket Sports Bar in Albemarle at 9 am, and then headed to West Stanly High School in Oakboro, NC, the place Kerri loved and attended school. The crowd was much larger than I had expected with both young and older people in attendance. There were approximately 500 people with 232 bikes riding for the Memorial. The folks we met at the ride were from all walks of life. The ride began as scheduled. As the ride left West Stanly High, tears of emotion hidden behind sunglasses filled the eyes of some riders as they rode past the miles of spectators cheering us on. We rode from Oakboro to Albemarle along Hwy 24/27 escorted by the Albemarle City Police Department and Stanly County Sheriff’s Department and then the Anson County Sheriff’s Department picked us up with Lane and Phyllis Furr leading the pack. Then we rode across Lake Tillery and rode thru the Uwharrie National Forrest to Troy, NC. Then up the country roads to Asheboro where we stopped at Cox’s Harley Davidson for a break and some refreshments. We took a scenic ride covering about 114 miles in Stanly, Montgomery, and Davidson Counties. A county worker was spotted blocking an intersection up Hwy. 134 with his utility vehicle lights flashing. The entire ride seemed to be filled with spectators supporting the riders. When we returned to the high school, I was impressed with the generous amount of door prizes and so much food and volunteers everywhere! BBQ plates, smiles, and good times, we all received t-shirts for this “donations only” event, which raised $13,716 for the scholarship fund. I quote the following from Tracy Efird, loving mother of “Kerri Pooh” and wife to Mayor Scott Efird: “The Kerri D Efird Memorial Scholarship was established to carry on the memory of a special person whose life was short, but in her 18 years she accomplished more than most of us will in a lifetime. Kerri, passed away on 2/21/1999 at the age of 18. Kerri had cystic fibrosis and at the age of 16 was placed on the transplant list for lungs. She received a new set of lungs on May 10, 1997 - Mother’s Day. Kerri did not walk across the stage at graduation w/ her class of 1999, but in spirit she was there when her name was called and she was recognized for
her academic achievements against all odds presented before her. Kerri’s life made such an impression that the KDE Memorial Scholarship was established. In the year 2000 we formally incorporated and became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. More about this event can be found at www.kerripooh.com.” Now you know all the reasons I am glad I did not miss this ride! Getting to know Scott Efird better, and being able to see how the community came together, both bikers and volunteers, to support this memorial fund ride. This was a special event that I will definitely be back next year for. Thanks to Scott and Tracy Efird and all involved for keeping Kerri’s spirit alive!

AHDRA Carolina Spring Nitro Nationals At Rockingham Dragway
Story And Photo By: Alan Dockery Ah, springtime at the drag strip. It means beautiful weather and the smell of nitro in the air. That’s what greeted racers and fans at Rockingham Dragway for the All Harley Drag Racing Association Carolina Spring Nitro Nationals. Yeah, folks, they are racin’ at The Rock twice this year. A bunch of my buddies were camped nearby and kept a nice fire going for the cool evenings. The usual vendors were there with some new folks, too, selling cool things bikers need. Saturday night we rocked to the sounds of Peacepipe. Tommy Grimes, Pfafftown, NC, qualified the Ray Price machine number one in Screamin’ Eagle Top Fuel with a 6.344 at 228.77 in the first qualifying round. He was eliminated Sunday in the semi-finals. Jay Turner, Julian, NC, also ran in Top Fuel and Brook McCabe, Roanoke Rapids, NC, took a shot at getting in the class. In Rush Racing Products Pro Fuel, Armon Furr, Orangeburg, SC, and Chad Stroud, Mooresville, NC, competed. Mark Cox, Wilkesboro, NC, was at The Rock with his bright yellow Bojangles Pro Dragster. Johnny Vickers, Millers Creek, NC, won the Hawaya Racing Pro Drag class. Keith Browne, Semora, NC, made it to the finals in Rush Pro Gas. Keith “Stump” Williams, Murrells Inlet, SC, also competed in the class. Brian Fox, Statesville, NC, rode the Tilley’s H-D machine in Screamin’ Eagle V Rod Destroyer. Dickie Johnson, Aynor, SC, raced in the Purvis Motor Sports Hot Street class. The Bison Racing / Vreeland’s H-D Super Gas class saw Jay Beasley, Winston-Salem, NC; Scott Kirkpatrick, New Ellenton, NC; Miles Hamrick Sr., Gastonia, NC, and Keith Richner, Moore, SC, make the 9.70 index field. Dale Burris, Mt. Pleasant, NC, ran in the AHDRA 10.30 index Super Sport class. Lane Boger, Greensboro, NC, qualified number one in the Rush Super Eliminator 10.90 index class with a 10.902. Jeremy Abbott, Conover, NC, qualified in the bottom half of the SE field, but put everyone else on the trailer as he worked his way to the win. Gene Jennings, High Point, NC, and Jimmy Winters, Apex, NC, also ran in SE. Jennings earned a win earlier this year that we didn’t mention. At the season opener in Florida, Jennings won the tough
ET Class by .003 seconds. He beat the current #3 plate holder, Kevin Winters, who had already won in two other classes that day. Way to go Gene! Another Carolina Boy, Greg Best, Raleigh, NC, worked his way up the ladder to win the 11.50 Screamin’ Eagle Performance class. Jeremy Abbott qualified second with Lane Boger, Jr., Concord, NC; Mike Trull, Sanford, NC; Glenn Sutton, Moore, SC; and Rick Medford, Cherokee, NC, also in the field. Jay Beasley kept going rounds as he made it to the finals in SYN 3 ET. Jimmy Winters, Scott Kirkpatrick, Jay Beasley, Mike Trull, Glenn Sutton, Dale Burris, Gene Jennings, Keith Richner, Mike Best, Cary, NC; Benjamin Ridenhour, Albemarle, NC; Don Meeler, Goldsboro, NC; Chris Fairfax, Lancaster, SC; Erik Harley, Charlotte, NC; Travis Ellis, Summerville, SC; Jack Efird, Marshville, NC; and James Childers, Myrtle Beach, SC, made the ET field. Make sure y’all check out www.fullthrottlemagazine.com for more photos from The Rock. AHDRA will be at Bristol Dragway August 6-7. The schedule has changed a little for that weekend to beat the heat. Qualifying will start Saturday afternoon and go into the night with eliminations Sunday afternoon. I am looking forward to seeing, hearing and feeling those nitro bikes as they light up Thunder Valley. And, yes, race fans, we will be back at The Rock for the season finals Jim McClure Nitro Nationals October 8-9.

L to R - Rob Paul, Carrie Deem, Bill Bales (Sales Manager), Mark Hess, and Kent Edwards. By: Wendy Rogers The first Saturday of May is always the day for Open House at Cape Fear H-D in Fayetteville, NC. Every year it seems to get bigger and better. This year the date was May 7th. They had a lot of vendors there again this year. They really offer a lot for the kids. They want to bring in families with kids just as well as biker enthusiasts. The music was by “Evans City Saints”, “The Several Devils Band”, and “New Machine”. They were playing on the CFHD & Rock Shop Rockin’ Stage, The Rock Shop Music Hall. Steve Rogers and Smarty Marty the One Man Party was there with his great pretzels and lemonade! Lots to shop around and find about anything you needed, or just wanted. The lucky woman this year was a Carrie Deem who won the 2011 Dyna Wide Glide. Carrie said that her husband bought 6 tickets and put her name on 3 of them. She won the Dyna Wide Glide, but since hubby bought the tickets, she gave him the bike and they traded it for a Fat Boy. How lucky it is to be the winner of such a Grand Prize? Also as always CFHD provided food and drinks for everyone and had great savings on everything inside the store. They had a bike show and dyno-shoot out as well. Mike Daniels won the Dyno Shoot Out with a motor built by Dennis Thurlow that turned out 108hp. The Ill Conduct Stunt Show was there, all the way from Kansas City, Kansas. They were marking their territory in the parking lot! Jeff Schnyder AKA “Jumpin’ Jeff” and Cole Freeman AKA “Lil’ Crazy” and yes they were jumping and acting CCCCRRRRRAAAAZZYY!!! Don’t forget the first Saturday of every May, come to Cape Fear Harley-Davidson, 3950 Sycamore Dairy Road, Fayetteville, NC 28303 to enjoy this exciting welcoming of spring time which means it’s time to ride! See their ad in this issue and watch The Carolina’s Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin Calendar for future events.

Angel Wings Zahra Baker Memorial Ride By: Mutant of B.A.C.A. of NC Capital Area On Saturday, April 16, a group of bikers gathered together in memory of Zahra Baker, a small girl whose life ended much too soon. The day dawned dreary and wet, with warnings of severe weather to come, yet many braved the weather to show up and honor this child, whose life was ended by a person who was supposed to care for and protect her. Zahra’s story was one that deeply affected a great many people. Her father brought her to this country from Australia, so he could marry a woman he met online. Zahra’s life here had many challenges. Zahra had survived two bouts with cancer that cost her a leg and most of her hearing, but it didn’t seem to hold her back. She also had to endure untold amounts of abuse at the hands of her stepmother, ultimately ending in her senseless death. You can search online and find out more about her story, but this ride was not about dwelling on the horror of the past. It was intended to honor and celebrate the positive spirit that Zahra somehow managed to maintain. It was about moving forward, increasing awareness of child abuse, raising money for related charitable causes, and to honor Zahra’s memory. As we approached ride time, the skies cleared and the sun came out, and all were in agreement that Zahra was smiling down at us. The Memorial ride started at Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson in Hickory and stopped first at Zahra’s school, where the children had planted and worked on a memorial garden for her. We gathered, some words were said, a donation was made for the garden, and the ride continued. We meandered through some beautiful back roads and by a Memorial Park/Playground being built in Zahra’s memory. The ride then returned to Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson in Hickory where there was a live band, food, and door prizes. Everyone was also privileged to hear Brooke and Laura DeLeary perform their song, “Voiceless,” that they wrote after Zahra’s death. The weather continued to cooperate and everybody seemed to have a great time. The ride was conceived and coordinated by Conover, NC, resident Gail Boyce. I know Gail would want to be sure that everyone who worked on this ride with her would be acknowledged and thanked. Since I cannot possibly name all the people and organizations involved without inadvertently slighting someone, I would just like to say that all of us who participated in the ride appreciate and thank all those that put in all the hard work to make this event a success. Funds raised from the ride will be donated to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Tennessee that researches and treats childhood cancers like Zahra’s and to Bikers Against Child Abuse of North Carolina, also known as B.A.C.A. of NC. B.A.C.A. is a non-profit, 501-C-3 tax exempt organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety, and support for children who have been abused. We are dedicated to the principle that one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected. Our mission is simple: To empower abused children to not feel afraid of the world in which they live. We stand ready to ready to lend support to these children by involving them with an established, united organization that works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. B.A.C.A. desires to send a clear message to all involved with the abused child this child is part of our organization and we are prepared to do whatever it takes to keep the children safe and to shield them from further abuse. We lend physical and emotional support to these children by affiliation, and by our physical presence. B.A.C.A. does not condone the use of violence or physical force in any manner; however, if circumstances arise that we are the only obstacle preventing a child from further abuse, we stand ready to be that obstacle. For more information about B.A.C.A. visit www.bacaworld.org or call 919-3244702.

it was decided that the girls would go with one teacher and the boys would go with the other. The teacher assigned to the boys was waiting outside the men’s room when one of the boys came out and told her that none of them could reach the urinal. Having no choice, she went inside, helped the boys with their pants, and began hoisting the little boys up one by one, holding on to their ‘wee-wees’ to direct the flow away from their clothes. As she lifted one, she couldn’t help but notice that he was unusually well endowed. Trying not to show that she was staring the teacher said, “You must be in the 5th grade.” “No, ma’am”, he replied. “I’m riding Silver Arrow in the seventh race, but I appreciate your help.”

Chopper Toyz 2nd Ever Swap Meet
By: Pedro “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Nowhere is this old adage more evident than at a good old-fashioned motorcycle swap meet. That spare gas tank on the shelf or those exhaust pipes hanging in the garage that never quite found a home, may be exactly the missing part that someone else has been searching for to complete their project. It’s a win-win situation for both parties, whether you’re the one selling the “trash” or the lucky recipient of the “treasure”. This line of frugal thinking led Dan Korzendorfer, AKA “Neon” to establish an annual swap meet on May 14th, this being the ‘2nd Ever”, showcasing anything and everything related to motorcycles. And being that Neon, and his lovely wife Janice, are the owners/operators of Chopper Toyz on Hwy 70 in Morehead City, NC, they had just the right venue to hold such an event. “I hear people complain all the time about the unneeded parts they have in their garage or storage that they wish they could get rid of.” Neon says. “I just gave them a place to do it.” Chopper Toyz provided a live DJ, rocking all our favorite road tunes; the Newport Moose Riders, serving up tasty treats and ice cold drinks to benefit the Carteret County Humane Society; and a spacious back lot for the vendors to display their various wares. The event kicked off at noon and early birds were treated to free coffee and donuts provided by Dunkin Donuts. These luxurious vendor accommodations were available starting at a meager $25 per space. Better yet, admission was free for the general public so potential browsers would not be deterred from attending. Several regular Joes also took advantage of the opportunity to clean out their garages, displaying various motorcycle parts and accessories for sale. Additionally, Chopper Toyz was open with their awesome selection of products and great prices, not to mention their extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff. Of course, you
get that seven days a week with these guys. Unfortunately, the threat of severe weather and the occasional ominous-looking cloud passing over thwarted all but the bravest of deal seekers and attendance was down a bit from the 1st Ever Swap Meet. But Neon and Janice assure me that this will continue to be a yearly event, so be sure to mark your calendars next spring. Also, Chopper Toyz hosts an impressive Annual Fall Bike Show at their store on the last Sunday in October, definitely a “don’t miss” event. Follow all of Chopper Toyz events, happenings, and store specials by finding them on Facebook and clicking the “Like” button.

By: Angelica Roman Hundreds of Easter baskets lined the drag strip and surrounded the front desk at Ray Price Harley-Davidson and Triumph in the weeks leading up to the annual Easter Basket Ride on Saturday, April 23rd. Customers and employees brought in baskets filled with candy and toys to be donated to children in the local area. This year, however, was a little different than previous years. Despite a cloudy sky and cooler temperatures, Ray Price himself led the Easter Basket Ride group of about 50 riders to the Raleigh Christian Community Church, where children from all over the surrounding communities participated in a huge Easter egg hunt and enjoyed other festivities. Mrs. Jean Price rode in a stretch limo, provided by Logic Limo, filled to capacity with Easter baskets. The police-escorted ride traveled through Raleigh on some nice, twisty roads and arrived at the church as the Easter egg hunt was in full swing. Children marveled over the motorcycles, and were excited when the group began to unload the hundreds of baskets filled with goodies, and the bikers passed out the baskets to the thrilled children. Ray Price greeted everyone, and the large crowd listened as the Easter Story was shared for all to hear over the loud speakers. The families and their children were grateful for the generous display of kindness demonstrated by the riders. Lots of children had their picture taken next to the shiny motorcycles as they smiled with joy. There were a number of extra baskets that were donated to families in the area that were hit hard by the recent tornados. Riders were excited to shake up the routine this year, and Ray Price and the dealership employees couldn’t have been happier with the success of the event. “A great ride, a good cause, and awesome people,” said one rider. “That’s what it’s all about.” For more information on rides and activities at Ray Price, visit www.rayprice.com or become a fan at www.facebook. com/RayPriceHarley. YELLIN’ REBEL BIKER ACCESSORIES All Military Receive 10% Discount
By: Steve (Sparky) Rowland I really like to cover, and ride in fundraisers that are local. It is nice to see the money go directly to the person who needs the help. All the other events are great and I’ve ridden in lots of them, but when you get to meet the people who need the money on a one to one basis it’s cool. Susan Artlip and LaCha Porter, GM of HB Spokes, put this ride together. Susan had met Lisa Herring, David Purifoy’s mother, working at HB Spokes about 7 years ago. When this tragedy happened, they wanted to help the family. I talked to Susan a little about what happened. Lisa’s son had a hunting accident and was killed last February. I also talked to few of the riders today. They all said David was a typical, fun loving kid, a good kid who loved the outdoors. He was only 14 years old. April 23rd was another perfect riding weather day, so I headed up to HB Spokes about 9am. No one was there when I pulled in, but in about 5 minutes, Susan was first to show up. Today’s ride was from Longs to Murrells Inlet, so it’s a pretty good little putt. There were 122 registered riders on about 100 bikes today. Some said they found out about it from The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calender, so that’s great. We arrived back at HB Spokes about 5pm. We were all getting hungry and some couldn’t wait for the hotdogs to come out. They had to eat! Susan had gathered lots of door prizes and lots of stuff for silent action. It took a long time for the door prizes to get drawn, plus all the auction stuff. There was this one guy Big Glen, who decided to shave his head for the cause. It went like this; one bucket was put out for “shave it”, and another for “save it”. The one with most money in it decided his fate. “Shave it” won, with $380. “Save it” only had $309. Big Glen could have added $72 to the “Save it” bucket to save his hair, but he said, “What the hell!” Both head and beard were sacrificed for the cause today. Thanks Glen, for raising almost $700. Over all they collected about $5000. Lisa told me she is so appreciative of Susan, LaCha, and everyone who came and supported her and her family. If anyone else would like to help, just send Susan an email at: SArtlip@yahoo.com. What’s cool about doing this is meeting new people. There were over 100 people at this event that I had never met before. I didn’t hear of anyone having trouble getting home, so it was a good ride. All of the ride and the head shaving pictures are on line at: www.FullThrottleMagazine.com. Please feel free to view and download all you want.

By: Caroline It is a good thing that Smokin’ Harley-Davidson scheduled 2 days for their Demo Days, cause the bad storms on Saturday, April 16th sure put a lot of activities on hold. Thankfully, we came out much better than the eastern part of the state and you could not have asked for a more beautiful spring day than Sunday, April 17th. If you were looking for more riding inspiration, I couldn’t think of a better way to promote it. The way this worked was all you needed was a helmet and a motorcycle endorsement. You then got your pick of any 2011 model to demo on a 13 mile run. If you had trouble making up your mind which Harley to ride, you could try out all of them! They featured models from all the classes, Sportster, Dyna, Softail, Touring, and VRSC. I watched plenty of folks come back with that love struck look on their face so I’m sure there were plenty of new 2011 bikes finding new homes that day. While you waited for that next ride, you could hang out with Bob Karney and the Karney Girls from the Karney Law Firm. They were there autographing calendars and talking to folks. I even got the chance to get a legal questioned answered. That is just how nice they are. I look forward to seeing these folks again at the next event! I also look forward to seeing what other events will be going on at Smokin’ this year. Keep your eye out on the ads in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar and at www.Smokinharley. com. Or just cruise on in to Smokin’ Harley-Davidson at 3441 Myer Lee Drive in Winston-Salem, NC (27101). They are open Tue-Fri 9am-6pm; Sat 8:30am-6pm; Sun 11am-5pm (336) 722-3106. Tell them you read about Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine.
