THUNDERZONE Thunder www.TheThunderZone.com

Man! Did I ever have fun in May! We attended Thunder In the Smokies in Maggie Valley and the 71st Annual Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association Twin Rivers in New Bern. They were both great and it was good to get out and ride somewhere. As you can see from the Table Of Contents, our staff was out at a lot of events, too. I hope you got out to some of these, too. I just wish that I could attend more events, but until that “beam me up” thing becomes a reality, we are going to have to depend on a lot of other folks to help us. Maybe that is something that you would be interested in. We are always looking for sales representatives and writers all over North & South Carolina. If you think it might be you, give us a call. I would love to talk to you about getting involved with The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Now it is July. The kids are out of school and our second national holiday, Independence Day, is the first weekend of the month. Man do I love this one! Hot weather, family picnics, baseball games, parades, get togethers with friends, fireworks, and a couple of days off are right up my alley. There is no doubt in the Carolinas that summer is here. I hope that you are able to get out and enjoy some of these activities. Remember that Independence Day is one of our country’s high holidays as we salute those whose service helped form and defend this republic from all enemies, both foreign and domestic. Take time to worship in your own way and thank God for the guidance that our forefathers obviously had and for the blessings our nation has enjoyed over the past 235 years. Please pray for all of our troops and ask God to protect them and give them victory over the enemies of liberty and guide our political leaders to make decisions that will return the USA to economic stability and return it to a position of leadership in the world. Please pray for those who have lost loved ones in the struggle to preserve liberty that the pain in their hearts may be overwhelmed with the pride in knowing they did all anyone can do for our just cause. Then I urge you to get out there and wave “Old Glory” and enjoy to the fullest the liberty that the blood of our countrymen has earned. Anything less would not be a fitting tribute to their sacrifice. The Cruisin’ Calendar is full of things to do. Ride with pride and be careful of the idiots on the road. Thank you, Veterans for doing your part to protect the “land of the free”. Courtesy is owed, Love is given, Respect is earned.

Winning The Battle Against Motorcycle Only Roadblocks

By: Jan MacKay, BOLT of NC In these very troubled times of TSA agents groping your stuff, strip-searching little girls and boys, invading high school proms in addition to airports, and probing Miss Americas’ vagina, we all need this bit of good news, from Raleigh, about limiting government authority. Legislation was unanimously enacted on June 15, 2011, which, if signed into law, will make it clear that police may not set up checking station patterns to target specific types of non-commercial vehicles. Learn about this bill at: http://goo.gl/ZRv8S Read the bill at: http://goo.gl/tH99P . For years, we’ve been hearing reports about police setting up roadblocks/checkpoints throughout the state, which pulled over motorcycles only. The problem was, nobody who was pulled over jotted down specific facts such as names of police officers were who interrupted their travel, and from what police departments, so motorcycle rights advocates were unable to act on complaints. We had suspicions this went beyond local police and that a trail would lead us back to the executive branch of state government department, and the NC Governors Highway Safety Program (GHSP). However, we were unable to act on bikers’ complaints due to lack of solid facts. That all changed when Jacksonville Daily News (www.JDNews.com) wrote an article about a motorcycle only checkpoint in Holly Ridge which was conducted during the Myrtle Beach Fall Rally of 2009. Read what the Jacksonville Daily News printed here: http://goo.gl/mzaFA. The news article stating the motorcycle only roadblock was part of “a new initiative by the Governors’ Highway Safety Program” was exactly the ammunition Bikers Of Lesser Tolerance (B.O.L.T.) had been waiting for to attack the problem at the state level, rather than every rinky-dink local police department like Holly Ridge. News reached BOLT members who immediately launched simultaneous attacks on several fronts against motorcycle only roadblocks (MOR) at state and local level. We intentionally screamed bloody murder about the loss of important constitutional protections against unlawful search and seizure. This was extremely effective. It resulted in the issue getting widespread attention and a senate inquiry asking under what authority NC GHSP created the new initiative. The US Supreme Court has ruled that there are three specific reasons under which they will allow police to establish checkpoints in violation of 4th Amendment protections, and setting up checkpoints for general law enforcement investigations is dangerous to a free society. Those specific allowances are 1. border patrol, 2. sobriety checks, and 3. license checks. Other than that, the police must have probable cause. There is no judicial precedent which allows police to target particular types of non-commercial vehicles, such as motorcycles, Corvettes, imports, or cars with bumper stickers that endorse political challengers for sheriff for roadblocks. The timing of this action was suitable. A year earlier, North

15

Carolina had adopted laws to limit roadside stops without probable cause which profiled particular races of people, with legislators and rights advocacy groups saying “driving while black is not a crime”. BOLT used that same anti-profiling argument to say “driving while a motorcyclist is not a crime”. There must be probable cause. Oh, the reaction to that! A follow-up article which interviewed BOLT leader Jan MacKay ended up being the most commented on news story on JDNews.com. If anyone wants to get a feel for how compliant people have become, allowing police to trample over all our protections of liberty, and how there is a divide between those who understand the Constitution and those who could care less, you might want to spend a couple of hours reading through the flaming comments and responses at http://ns3.us/ ref2. For those of you who have not paid much attention to motorcyclist rights at the national level, I’ll briefly summarize that the NHTSA, a division of the US DOT, has been pushing for states to have motorcyclist only roadblocks. Several states have accepted NHTSA funds in order to do this. Major rallies have been targeted. At first, NY State Police used the federal funds to target riders at Americade. Court efforts for injunctive relief in New York have been dragging on for two years. If you rode through Georgia on the way to Daytona Bike Week, chances are you were forced into a weigh station off I-95. Again, our financially insolvent federal government funded this profiling and infringement on your right to freely travel in America. While there are many who understand freedom, many other people enthusiastically give up liberty in the name of safety. This kind of ignorance seriously hurts all the efforts to keep America “the land of the free”. Larry Overby from Erwin, NC was stopped at the Georgia roadblock during Bike Week and liked it, saying others should also like the extra police scrutiny “if you’ve done nothing wrong”. When government infringes on our rights and liberties there needs to be an obvious and immediate opposition by the people. BOLT was the only motorcyclist rights group with a presence in North Carolina to launch an immediate response, and go after the NC GHSP for their involvement. As soon as Continued On Page 16

the Holly Ridge checkpoint happened, this was the exact opportunity BOLT was waiting for. Thus, the fast response was within hours rather than months. It took other groups up to a year to even determine where their organization stands on the issue. They knew this had been going on for years, so what’s there to think about? However, despite my criticism, I want to be fair and give credit where due. BOLT was able to kickstart the opposition, get Senate inquiries into the GHSP, and raise a lot of ruckus, but despite the best efforts by the handful of BOLT of NC members to get legislators and the governor to respond, it appears to have taken one particular CBA Chapter from Gaston County to eventually get a bill sponsor. So kudos to my fellow BOLT members, and I suspect kudos are also in order for Gaston County bikers. You all know what you did and the dedicated efforts it took. Now, let’s make sure the governor signs the bill. Also, let’s be sure that we who ride motorcycles do not ever let the police get away with profiling us. Learn your rights and how to handle a roadside stop or unconstitutional police roadblock. If you believe your rights have been infringed upon just because you ride a motorcycle, there are remedies and ways to prevent this. You can either get in touch with BOLT at http:// nc.boltusa.org or you can contact BOLT through Mark or Molly Infield who also work hard to protect your rights at the most biker-friendly magazine in the Carolinas, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine.

71st CHDDA Twin Rivers Spring Rally

By: ChromeDoll The 71st CHDDA Twin Rivers Spring Rally was held in New Bern, NC on May 20-21. This was the third year the event was held in New Bern, however, this year the event was held in the historic downtown riverfront, not at the fairgrounds as in previous years. This year also brought a new twist. Jimmie Allen, owner of host Harley-Davidson of New Bern, Inc. said they pursued some sponsors, which allowed them to not charge admission to the event. This provided a win-win situation for business owners and riders as well as people who just wanted to show up, walk around and check things out. The weather also held up wonderfully and there was no rain like the first year the event was held at the fairgrounds. The events began on Friday with vendors and live music. The bands “Vices” and “Cold Biscuit” played on the outdoor stage at the waterfront. It was really nice to be able to sit at the tables on the waterfront and listen to their great music. Inside the dealer mall was set up and some other vendors for you to take a look around, cool off, and get a GREAT deal. During different times of the day there were street stunts by the Buell Stunt Team. These guys were really good. Friday evening at the Sudan Shrine Auditorium “All my Rowdy Friends” a Hank Jr. tribute band, and “Tuesdays Gone” a Lynyrd Skynrd tribute band played. These were two of the best tribute bands that I have ever heard and back-to-back made for a great evening of music. On Saturday morning, the events kicked off with a ride-in bike show, the H.O.G. Chapters “show your flags” parade, which left the Harley-Davidson shop in New Bern and rode to the downtown rally site. Now that was a sight to see! Another very interesting sight was seeing the record holding championship race team of Ray Price Harley-Davidson. Hearing and seeing the quickest and fastest, naturally aspirated motorcycle in the world was unbelievable. When they started it up, I thought to myself, “Boy, I thought that would be louder”, but then, WOW, he cranked it and my whole body vibrated! People don’t seem to realize just how loud those drag bikes are until they are right near it. It truly is something to see. Later that afternoon “The Peace Soldiers” and “Sand Dune Cowboys” hit the outdoor stage for some more outdoor listening. After a full day of fun, the festivities were finished off with the New Bern Chamber of Commerce Block Party at the Farmer’s Market featuring “Experience This” (a Jimi Hendrix tribute band) and “Nantucket”. Many people turned out to see Nantucket and it was an awesome ending to a GREAT rally. It was a time where people who were local and people who were from out of town gathered and enjoyed the great hospitality that New Bern had to offer. I’m sure I speak for a lot of people when I say that we are really looking forward to next year. Continue to read The Carolina’s Full Throttle Magazine for future rallies and events. Until then, stay cool and enjoy the ride!

Horsefeathers Roadhouse 15th Anniversary Party

Story and photo by Alan Dockery The third weekend of May was party time at Horsefeathers Roadhouse in Sherrills Ford, NC. We celebrated 15 years that folks have enjoyed this cool old roadhouse on the West side of Lake Norman. And I mean they partied most of the weekend, starting with a 10 am BBQ Brunch served until 2 pm. You can stop at Horsefeathers for that BBQ Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays as you head out to ride or stop by when you are near the lake. At Noon the renowned house band, Southern Style struck up the music in the corner of the deck closest to Lake Norman, and played non-stop until well after 3. The Big Deck was packed with house regulars who can’t get enough of this band. “All the girls love a Big Deck!” Says the new Horsefeathers’ T-shirt. “Besides the 15th Anniversary we celebrated the remodeling of our 2,100 square foot Big Deck -- Size Matters!” said Tim Anderton, owner. “We now have additional seating and serving tables built right into the structure, plus a new air flow system to make our patrons more comfortable during the warmer days.” The building dates to 1948, that’s before there was a Lake Norman. Since 1996 more than $2.5 Million has been invested into the building, contents, utilities, and earthwork. Next up on the Big Deck was Cheap Whiskey (formerly Carolina Outlaws, now located in East Tennessee), which ran full bore until after 7:30. By sundown the evening crowd arrived for the celebration. Soon the whole building, the Big Deck, the upper and lower inside bars, plus both upper and lower dining rooms, was partying. During the mid to late afternoon, there was a progressive Corn Hole Tournament, with a 150% payout of cash and HorseBucks, an in-house currency that trades for all their products. At 9pm Sho Time kicked things off on stage at the upper level 2,000 square foot dance floor. They played to a packed house until 2am. At midnight the BBQ Brunch was again available. Some time during the later hours, a very active Wet T-shirt Contest broke out celebrating the HFR commemorative shirt “All the girls love a Big Deck!” These shirts are still on sale for $11.95 while they last. “The HFR lead bartenders, Anna and Amy, were representative of the entire HFR Service Team, all of whom were on board to help manage the event,” Tim said. “A & A said they absolutely had more fun than ever, singing and dancing to the music, while taking the best of care of the HFR patrons. Amy said it was for sure one of the best parties HFR has thrown in 15 years! Anna commented on what a homecoming it was for so many historical patrons all at one time, plus she was very impressed with so many new faces, many who said they are avid followers of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle.” Keith Howell, General Manager of Horsefeathers, confirmed that the Big Deck/Birthday Party event was one of the biggest sales days in the 15-year history. “Patrons are lovin’ our new BBQ menu items, and I am very pleased with the crowd that showed up for our 10am BBQ Brunch, now available every Saturday and Sunday,” Keith said. “At Midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, we offer the same menu. Many have not had our BBQ products served breakfast style, plus we have all their

favorite drinks available.” Keith and his wife Kari were raised up in the Sherrills Ford community, and are well liked and respected throughout West Mooresville, Denver, Lincolnton, and South Hickory areas. “All day long the weather was perfect Carolina Blue, the music had everyone’s attention, we had many, many compliments on our BBQ products, and a great time was had by all,” Tim said. Horsefeathers Roadhouse and Park is located in Catawba County on the West side of Lake Norman about a mile North of Highway 150. Turn North on Little Mountain Road and go east on Mount Pleasant Road. Go slow because Horsefeathers comes up quick on the right. To see a map go to: http://goo.gl/80IxP or scan this QR code with your hand held devise.

By: Michael Frederick On May 22nd the Petty Family Foundation Charity Ride left from Tom Johnson Camping Center in Concord, NC and Cape Fear Harley-Davidson in Fayetteville, NC. 451 motorcyclists supporting Paralyzed Veterans of America and Duke Hospital Cancer Research left at 10 am bound for Petty’s home in Randleman, NC. Both groups met up at the Wilco Truck Stop at the intersection of NC 211 & NC 220 in Candor, NC. Another group of 42 bikes from Durham joined the group at the fire station in Level Cross. When they arrived, the riders enjoyed lunch from Parker’s Barbecue in Wilson and music from Craig Woolard Beach Music Band. Everyone got an event T-shirt and some really cool items were auctioned off. A guitar donated by Jeff Cash from the group Alabama was raffled off and Darrell Anderson was the lucky winner. Event organizer Jerry Aaron said everything went as perfectly as possible. “I think it was a 10,” he said. The event raised $25,000 for these charities. “Every year it gets more and more people interested,” said Rebecca Moffitt, director of the Petty Family Foundation and “The King,” Richard Petty’s daughter. “This is the first year we did a ride starting in Charlotte and in Fayetteville and came together.” They merged and rode the last 40 miles as a group together. There, Moffitt said, her famous father always gets out to meet the riders. “That’s a plus”, she said, but she thinks the motorcyclists would show even if he didn’t. “I think a lot of them just like the ride, and they do want to meet ‘The King,’” she said, “But when you give them a bigger reason - to support Paralyzed Veterans of America - they come out because we’ve given them a cause. It makes it more worth it.” There were too many sponsors to name here, but a special thanks is due to the Cabarrus, Cumberland, Iredell, and Randolph County Sheriff’s Departments for the ride escort.

MHA’s 18th Annual Motorcycle Rally & Poker Run

By: Louanne Stanton AKA Lou Lou We all have hard days. Heck, we have hard weeks! But sometimes, something comes along that makes you stop and appreciate what you have. On June 11, 2011, I experienced one of those moments. Our newly formed Uhwarrie Region CBA/ABATE group signed up for the PEACE OF MIND 18th Annual Mental Health Association Of Stanley County Ride And Poker Run. This great group of people put together one heck of a day for an awesome cause. The MHA of Stanley County has a woman at the helm by the name of Linda. Linda had some great stories to share about her love of riding along with her fear of riding after she and her husband were in a fender bender that threw her 30 feet into a busy New York Street. She is full of spunk and made sure everyone that approached her table got signed up for the poker run, a 50/50 drawing, and the great raffle prizes of a bowl that was handmade by one of the people we were riding for, a leather jacket, and a gift card from Pat and Mick’s Fish Camp. Leon was the young man designated to assist our group in drawing each of our cards for our poker hands. I started off phenomenally with an ace of spades. There were Krispy Kreme doughnuts and sausage biscuits to make sure we had the strength to begin this ride and there was plenty of cold water and sodas to wash them down with. Lorie was introduced as our nurse on the ride and I took her aside and warned her to beware of my husband faking illness, I told her to double check with me if he faints. She was a pretty nurse. After a brief pre ride meeting, we saddled up and left Albemarle High School. Among the 42 bikes in the parade we had a trike that had been modified to resemble a 1957 Chevy as well as chrome, chrome, chrome. It was a hot morning with plenty of miles to be ridden for a cause we were glad to support. Police escorts blocked the intersections as we rumbled through. I love that part of a ride! Our first stop was Tilley Harley-Davidson in Salisbury. I ride a Kawasaki but I was able to find something I couldn’t live without and was very impressed by the selection of gear, gadgets, and beautiful bikes in their dealership. One of the guys in our group even talked about trading his ride while we were there! They have a wide front porch, with comfy chairs if you choose to sit, and we visited with new friends. More police escorts and off we went into the hot wind. It was a peaceful ride through the country down to my favorite store in the whole world: the El Dorado Outpost. If you have not made the ride to this MECCA of a destination, drop this magazine and go! It is a destination for off roaders, boaters, campers, and bikers alike. I do believe they have even had Bigfoot go in there to purchase some of their great hats! Again, we picked our cards and mine was rounding out to a nice hand with a pair of 7’s. The last leg of our journey took us through more of the rolling foothills and I found some other places to explore at a later date. We ended up in Norwood at the Methodist Church,

where we were greeted with air conditioning and the aroma of Barbeque, which had been donated by Whispering Pines BBQ there in Albemarle. We all feasted on BBQ, potato salad, beans, slaw, and chips. There were door prizes, and the raffles were given out. I missed that jacket by one number! My hand was thwarted by my last draw ending up with 3 of a kind, Ace high, but I was beat out by a heart straight. My moment of appreciation came when Linda was telling us about the services they offer to the community and what they provide for families who have a member who is mentally challenged. I reviewed my family history and the health we have enjoyed our entire lives. There were no fears or challenges to be met by making sure someone took their meds each day, no demons chasing someone I loved as I stood helplessly by. The MHA of Stanley County stands in that gap for many families each day. I am thankful they do it with love and compassion and include us in the ability to continue their work. When I walked out of that church basement into the hot sun to come home I had the peace of mind knowing that we made a difference that hot Saturday. $1400 dollars was raised and I am looking forward to doing it again next year. Mark it on your calendars and come join us. Linda can be reached at lindahoy40@gmail.com and (704) 985-7170.

Do Not Make A Statement At The Scene Of An Accident

By: Matt Danielson I have been hesitant to write on this topic for two reasons. One is that I covered this topic about five years ago. However, I am still finding people who think that they have to make a statement at the scene of an accident, so they do and end up hurting themselves. Secondly, I try very hard to make these articles informative and not an advertisement for my firm. If you are going to take the time to read these articles then you deserve information, not an infomercial. However, over the past couple of years I have been traveling around the country speaking about what your rights are during a traffic stop. In speaking to people, the one thing that always raises eyebrows is when I tell people not to make a statement at the scene of an accident; not even to the police. I often get responses such as, “Don’t I have to make a statement to the police?”, and, “Why shouldn’t I? I have nothing to hide!” The answer to those questions is that you have an absolute right to not speak to the police. In fact, at the scene of an accident you may be harming yourself by doing so. Before I start, let me say that I am not anti-law enforcement. I am a former police officer and a former prosecuting attorney. I was in law enforcement for nearly 13 years. However, I am also pro accident victim and if you are in an accident I do not want you to mistakenly hurt your claim. As I have stated in previous articles, Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina are contributory negligence states. That means that if the party who injured you can show that you were in some way at fault in causing the accident then your claim can be denied. Speed, following to close, and not paying attention can be used as contributing factors to deny an injury claim even if the other party is more at fault than you. South Carolina and most of the rest of the nation are comparative negligence states. That means that if you are in an accident and the value of your claim is $100,000 but it is decided that you were 30% at fault, you received $70,000. Now let’s go to the accident scene. Assume you were riding down the road and a car turns left in front of your bike. Your leg is fractured. The officer asks you what happened and you tell him. He asks how fast you were traveling and you say 40-45 mph. The speed limit is 35 mph. In South Carolina and most other states you have just decreased the value of your claim. In Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland you may have just completely destroyed any claim that you had. At the scene of an accident your adrenaline is pumping. You may be in pain and you are most likely very angry at the other person whose carelessness has interrupted a great ride and badly damaged your bike. This is no time to make a statement. You may not be accurate and the insurance company will rely on that inaccurate statement to evaluate your claim. What you should say to the officer is that you are in no condition to make a statement at this time and that you just want to get to the hospital to get checked out. You can make a statement at a later date, after you have had time to calm down and reflect. Let me illustrate further by telling on myself. I was in an

auto accident a couple of years ago. I was making a left on a solid green light when I was t-boned by another driver traveling in the opposite direction. My first thought was that I was at fault. If I had a solid green the other driver, who was traveling straight, must have had one as well. Needless to say I was very angry at myself. I had just turned left in front of another person I was grateful that it was not a motorcyclist. Three officers arrived at the scene. One I knew, the second I knew because I was representing his wife at the time and the third one’s mother was a client of mine at that time. So things were getting a little better. I was asked by one of the officers to tell him what happened. However, I remembered the advice I give to others and refrained from making a statement. (I was later told by one of the officers that had I given a statement they were prepared to take me into the woods and beat me). Instead I left to go get checked out at the hospital. Before leaving however a woman who witnessed the accident gave me her number to give to the police. I put it in my pocket and went to the hospital. The next day I phoned the witness and asked why she had given me her number. She said that she wanted to make sure that I did not get a ticket. I was all ears! She went on to tell me that she was on the same side of intersection as the person who hit me. She stated that the light was green as I entered the intersection; however that it had immediately turned yellow. All of the traffic was coming to a stop when she heard a vehicle rapidly accelerating trying to beat the light. The light went red as I was in the middle of the intersection. The rapidly accelerating vehicle entered the intersection and struck my vehicle. Based on that statement, the other party’s company accepted liability and paid all damages from the accident. Had I made a statement at the scene I would have been wrong, I would have been held at fault, and I would have destroyed my claim. If you find yourself in an accident make sure to do the following: First; get medical attention just to make sure that you are ok. Second; do not make a statement to the police or to any insurance company. Let the police know that you will speak to them later after you have calmed down and sought medical attention. Third; contact an attorney. There is a very good chance you won’t need the help of an attorney. In fact, sometimes you are better off handling the claim yourself. However, it is better to make sure before accidentally harming your claim. Contacting an attorney usually does not cost you any money. My firm, for instance, will talk to anyone about their accident at no charge. I would rather you contact me and not need me then unknowingly need legal assistance and not realize it until after you have hurt yourself. If you have an organization that would like me, or a member of my firm, to come speak about this or any other issues of interest to motorcyclists, please feel free to give me a call. Additionally, if you have any further questions or comments concerning this article or any other matters concerning your rights as a motorcyclist please contact me at 1-800-321-8968 or at matt@motorcyclelawgroup.com. 5th Annual “Tricky Ricky” Memorial Benefit Ride In Memory Of Samantha Harvell By: Scott Wicker The 5th Annual “Tricky Ricky” Memorial Benefit Ride no doubt will go down as the best in the ride’s history so far. The ride is held in memory of “Tricky Ricky” Shambley. Ricky was an official for many years with the AHDRA and a great friend to the biker community in the Alamance County area. For the last 5 years, “Tricky’s” brother Doug has planned and organized the event with the help of many friends and family. The first two years, the ride benefited a child or teenager in the area that has gone through physical challenges or illnesses. Three years ago, the ride benefited then 3-year-old Reagan Allison who suffered from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The 1st year, the ride was held for Samantha Harvell, a teenager suffering from Osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. This year’s ride, as was the last two year’s rides, benefited Sam’s Wish Fund at Kids Path of Hospice of Alamance and Caswell Counties, an organization that does many great things at no cost for those they are helping. Whether it is making a dream come true like a trip to the zoo or a hot air balloon ride, counseling a sick child, a trip to the beach, or a child who is dealing with the loss of a loved one, they are a true blessing. Over 200 bikes participated in the ride, which started at 3 Stooges Cycles near Elon College. The ride made 3 stops and then ended at Jimmy Cable’s Farm near Elon College for the after party. There, over 2000 people were treated to great food and lots of door prizes were given away as well. Too Far Gone, The Back Porch Orchestra, The Mason Lovette Band,

Lucky 13, Down n Dirty, and then Sok Monkee provided entertainment. A 50/50 drawing was held and the winning hands from the run were announced. Everyone that participated became members of the Awsome Possum Club. Doug Shambley, the ride’s organizer, and Lee Walker of Burlington announced that if over $20,000 was raised they would voluntarily have their heads shaved. In all, over $25,000 was raised and given in memory of Samantha through donations, the ride, raffle tickets, and event t-shirt sales. Sorry about your hair Doug and Lee. Doug and everyone that made this event happen would like to thank those who participated, all the sponsors, and everyone who donated items, their time, and talents to make the ride another huge success. Remember! Ride Safe!

Riders’ Roost 21st Anniversary Party

Story and photo by Alan Dockery Memorial Day Weekend is the beginning of summer for many of us. For a whole bunch of folks it was the start of The 21st Party Season at Riders’ Roost in Ferguson, NC. It sure was good to see Roosters start setting up camp Friday afternoon and the light sprinkles early that evening just cooled us off a little. Friday night we hung out at the pavilion and told jokes and “real road stories.” Then Mad Mike fired up the karaoke and we got to hear just how bad some of us couldn’t sing. I love Friday nights at the Roost just kickin’ back and catchin’ up with old ridin’ buddies. Saturday the weather was great, not too hot with Carolina Blue skies all day. The creek was up from the recent rains and flowing fast. A few of us got out our fishin’ poles to feed the fish, but the swift water made catchin’ them tough. So what! Sometimes fishin’ is about being on the creek with friends. This was one of the rare times I didn’t get in to swim since the water was coming over the falls just a little to fast for this old guy. We could still sit in the shallows, cool off in the water and enjoy cool beverages, too. That afternoon The U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club, North Carolina Chapter, presented a gift to all bikers who visit The Roost; one that has special meaning to many of us Roosters who are veterans and very appropriate for Memorial Day Weekend. The U.S. Military Vets MC conducted a Flagpole Dedication and a Retreat Ceremony. The ceremonies were well attended with riders coming from various parts of the country to enjoy the great partying, but more importantly, remembering our military veterans who served in the defense of our country. ‘6 Gun’, the master of ceremonies, gave an inspiring speech about the significance of our country’s flag and our military veterans who fought and died to ensure liberty, freedom and independence for all Americans. Ballou, the club’s president, presented the U.S. Flag to the owners of the Roost, BC and David who are both veterans. I know they will proudly fly our Nation’s colors along with the POW/MIA flag on the flagpole that the U.S. Military Vets MC erected to honor all military veterans. Thanks so very much guys. I will proudly salute The Flag every time I ride in. I don’t know if we’ll fire Charlie’s little cannon every day for retreat, but it did bring back memories. Saturday night the band Looks E-Z took the stage and had us rockin’ for hours. After the band, folks hung around the campfires making smores and talking late into the night. If you ain’t been to Riders’ Roost you are missing out on a piece of motorcycle heaven. I try to make several party weekends up there each summer. I love seeing old friends, but also

Thunder In The Smokies

By: WildThing When you try out something new or change an established practice, you are never sure how it will turn out. I applaud Chris and Lori, promoters of the semi-annual Thunder In The Smokies Rally in Maggie Valley as they moved their spring date up from late April to May 13-15 this year. The mountain weather in May is a little warmer and it turned out to be a good change. Some folks said that the Thunder In The Smokies Rally rode on the coattails of the Cherokee Survivors Rally, but this spring, with Cherokee cancelling and Thunder In The Smokies moving to May, they proved their mettle by having a very successful stand-alone rally. Thunder In The Smokies is one of our favorite rallies. The Festival Grounds in Maggie Valley is truly a beautiful setting; a flat grassy field surrounded by mountains and it seems to put people at ease. Then fill it up with good music, fun games, and motorcycles, what else could anyone want? And don’t forget cold beer, vendors, and food! When we arrived at the gate at dusk on Friday evening, there was a line to get in, the weather was perfect, and the bands were getting cranked up. We rode around the grounds, visiting with the vendors and checking out their wares. The place was packed with motorcycles, more than I had ever seen on a Friday night. The band schedule was awesome this spring with Stratus and Coaltrain rocking the house on Friday night. Saturday the gates opened at 9am. There was a guided tour ride leaving for the Blue Ridge Parkway at 10, then returning for the bike show and bike games. The bike games are always a hoot. First was the traditional slow race, then several rounds of the plunger game. It was hilarious watching the guys holding a plunger between their legs trying to run/walk fast with their knees clenched together! Then a new game with a length of PVC pipe on brackets and the passenger on the motorcycle dropping a tennis ball in the pipe then riding the length of the pipe and trying to catch the ball at the other end. A sudden rain shower complicated the game but the judges got umbrellas and the competitors donned rain jackets and the games went on. We lost about half of the spectators as they tried to beat the rain to their hotel rooms. The wienie bite was next. It is always a spectator favorite, and the rain was gone and the sun was back out in a beautiful blue sky. The final game was the find the beer can in the haystack game. The team with the most overall game points would win the prize money of $500, but before the start of this final event, Chris polled the winners of the other games and the decision was made to split the prize money so the winning team from each game would receive $100. This final game took several rounds to accomplish and we sweetened the pot by putting Full Throttle Magazine koozies on the cans for the finders to keep. The Saturday night line-up of bands began at 5:30 with Stratus, and then at 7:30 the DB Bryant Band took the stage. Both these groups did a great job. Just after dark the Fire Dancers wowed the crowd with their spectacular routine. The headliner, Nantucket, came on stage at 9:30. These guys do a fantastic job and by then the grounds were packed full of motorcycles

and there had to be a lot of locals because they brought in lawn chairs and sat down in the front rows of motorcycles. The bikes kept coming in all evening for a capacity crowd all enjoying a pleasant evening listening to these good bands. You can view pictures of this event at www.FullThrottleMagazine. com. As always, you can view and download as many as you like for free. We had to head home Sunday morning, but as we passed by the Festival Grounds, there was a good crowd of motorcycles there. These riders were there to enjoy the pancake breakfast and church services on the schedule.

Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Week 2011

By: Steve (Biker Boy) Rowland It’s Sunday night and I just got home from a week of bike week heaven. I started out the morning of May 13th, just riding around, checking out what was going. My first stop was Swing Bridge Saloon in Little River. For being the first day, the crowd was really good. Dem Boyz BBQ had some good food going on; they were there all week long serving everyone. I headed up to Beach House Harley in Shallotte. The parking lot was pretty full when I showed up. They had about 20 venders up there. I met a couple, Anu & Fredrick Kamis, who were from Finland. I had seen Anu getting her picture taken in front of the Buffalo Bike that was out front of the dealership. She was kinda scared of it. I went up and introduced myself and took a picture of both of them with the bike. You can find all my shots at www.FullThrottleMagazine. com.. I was riding down 17 and pulled up to three bikes with Canadian tags. They were heading down to Barefoot Landing to see all the venders. These guys rode four days to get here. They said the trip down was great; they just took their time, and enjoyed the journey. Saturday I decided to venture out with Joanie, without my camera, just as a spectator. We rode up to Beach House Harley and they had a crowd. Ric the owner said that this was the best crowd of the week. My wife bought me a ring to replace my wedding ring. That was really nice. We headed down to the MB Mall to test ride a couple of bikes. Joanie got to try out a HD Tri Glide for the first time. We each rode two bikes. They had a nice assortment of venders there, too. The next stop was Murrells Inlet. We heard that there were lots of bikes and venders there. There certainly were lots and lots of bike going up and down 17. The parking lots at Beaver

Bar and Suck Bang Blow were overflowing. We walked around a little. I had to get a bulb for my bike. As I was stopped at a light, I heard this voice coming from my left. A Horry County Motor Officer had pulled up beside me to let me know my brake light was out. I want to thank that Officer for letting me know. It was working this morning when I did my T-CLOCK on the bike before we left. I heard estimates of 100,000 to 150,000 bikes showed up for this spring bike week. I rode around every day and talked to lots of people. There is still some bad feeling about how the city of Myrtle Beach has treated them. Route 31 was busy both north and south with bikers going around Myrtle Beach. I went to many businesses down there, and 99% want our business. I had a couple that did advertise with us. They did get additional biker business, and were very happy to see us. It’s going to get bigger and better from now on. The North End, NMB, Little River, Barefoot Landing, had lots going on all week long. Barefoot Landing had 45 venders and they were busy everyday. I was rolling in Barefoot Landing to see all the venders and there in the parking lot was a tricked out Hayabusa sitting on a trailer. I pulled up to ask about getting a picture of it. Come to find out, it was a bike trade right in the parking lot. They were trading that bike for nice looking chopper. I have never seen a trade off in a parking lot. Each of the owners took a test ride, and shook hands and traded pink slips right there! I have a couple shot of the bikes on our website. I thought the spring rally was great. I saw lots of bikes, from all over the country. Last year I had to look for bikers on the first day. This year there were bikers all over the place, from Shallotte to Murrells Inlet. I think the only thing that’s going to happen is that this rally is going to get bigger and better. I can’t wait till the fall rally

Victory Demo Days

35

By: Doc Deal On May 20-21, Victory Demo days kicked off at High Point’s own World Class Powersports. It was a fun filled event with a bike giveaway, and demonstration rides on all the current new models from the classic bobber styled High-Ball to their futuristic and comfortable Victory Vision Tour. I have to say my personal favorite was the High-Ball with its lower aggressive stance and sharp black and white paint scheme, it was definitely a crowd favorite that drew a lot of attention, and had riders arguing over who was gonna ride it next! Dozens of Triad area Victory riders showed up to try their luck at winning a new Victory, and both days were packed with current and future riders. There were several vendors on-site such and they gave away coupons for FREE BEER, a VISA gift card, and a dinner at Cafe Pasta. On Saturday after the rides I did, and I think I had ridden every available model Victory produces TWICE! The fit and finish, available options and performance of these bikes are excellent and will definitely make a believer out of you in the quality and performance on tap from the other American motorcycle company. Do yourself a favor and stop in and see Shane and the rest of the professional and courteous staff at World Class Powersports Victory Polaris TODAY! The showroom, service department, and staff here are very courteous, the facility is clean and well stocked with merchandise, parts, and bikes, and they also have a full line of ATV’s, Side By Sides, and gear to fit all of your needs. World Class Powersports Victory Polaris is located at 2924 North Main Street in High Point, NC 27265 across from Sanibel’s Seafood. You can also find them on the web at www.WorldClassPowersports.com. By: Bryan Boyett It was dawn, June 12th, 2011. In less than four hours a fresh idea was going to come to fruition. From the fertile mind of Keith Swann, President of the South Piedmont CBA Chapter, a different type of exciting motorcycle event took place. A Biker Scavenger Hunt! The Moose Lodge 1554 of Monroe hosted this special event, with Brandon Cruze, Moose Lodge President, graciously opening up the facilities for Keith and Kelly, his lovely wife of 22 years, to begin sign-ups for the two bike teams. Moose Lodge Chapter Administrator, Robert Pate also stopped by. The rules required each team to gather points by stopping at as many locations posted on a checkpoint list as possible. Teams had to take a photograph at each point of interest to earn the point total allocated for that location. Waypoint totals were based on distance from the Moose Lodge. The further away from the starting point, the higher the point total. Teams could not be gone for more than five hours. Teams began as early as 9 am, and left no later than 10:30 am. Check in was no later than 3:30 pm. Strategy and speed sounded challenging, and FUN! There were six teams with 22 riders

total that participated in this unique event. Robert Douse’s team won first place followed by the team of Terry and Pia Tucker. Payouts were $50 and $25 respectively. Michelle Tous won the 50/50 contest. Of course the money was the least important item. We all know the real enjoyment comes from the camaraderie and fun of “the ride”! The Moose Lodge provided after-ride refreshments, where the capable volunteer help from Tiffany, Nita and Jessi (Secretary of the Moose Riders) and the rest of the wonderful folks who toiled behind the scenes. For more information about the Moose Lodge and Moose Riders please contact Brandon Cruze at 704-283-4928. Benefit For Crazzy Richard

By: Anchor Hello, everyone! It’s good to see that all are out and about riding in these great hills we have. Well, I had a great time starting my summer rides for a gentleman by the name of Crazzy Richard! His given name was William Richard Freeman and he was known over half of his life simply as “Crazzy Richard”, a name he well earned thru his life. We started the day off thinking we were going to ride with this valiant man, but unbeknown to me, Crazzy lost his battle with cancer only a few days before the ride was to take place. However, his loved ones made sure that some of his final wishes were carried out and that was to be cremated and put into bags, one of which was a Crown Royal bag, and taken on the ride. That way where ever that person went he was there still enjoying the ride! Honestly, I had only met the man only once, but as I rode with his friends and people that knew him well I felt that this was the kind of man that you wanted to be your friend. He helped people with all sorts of problems and went out of his way to help a friend. One time he gathered his stuff up and packed his mobile home and helped another friend get through their battle with cancer (and win it) and then go back home and set up camp again, I heard stories like the time he was kicked out of McDonalds just for doing something that only he would do! The stories made me laugh and some brought sorrow to my heart. I am sorry that we don’t get to see this man riding and continuing his tattooing, but we all know he is in our prayers and riding some where on a bike being free! The fundraiser started out as a way to help him with expenses but it ended up generating close to $1,600 dollars to helping with his finial expenses. The family and I thank all that came out to celebrate Crazzy Richard’s life.

This is a small right up that his sister wants y’all to know. Richard grew up in Poquoson, VA and lived big there until l976, when he moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina. He stayed, more or less, the rest of his life with an exception of a 2-year ride he took from east to west and back across the country. That’s a book in itself. He had carpenter tools in one saddlebag and in the other tattoo equipment, and that’s how he made his way. He really hit it off and stayed a pretty good while on the Navajo reservation near the Grand Canyon. At Poquoson High School, there is a plaque that hangs in the hall stating that Richard was the most athletic student ever to graduate from Poquoson High School in its history. He won track meets for the school single handed on his points alone. He was a natural athlete. He actually invented the backward flip in high jumping right in our backyard. He figured it out first that he could jump higher backwards, and that’s how he won so much. The others were learning the technique from him, while he was whipping their butts. Now everyone back flips over the high jump.

He went to East Tennessee State University on a full athletic scholarship, and his freshman year, competed in Madison Square Gardens for the l969 Summer Olympics in high jumping. I believe he still holds the college’s high jump record. He finished 2nd in the Olympic Trials, getting beat by a life long rival. The only one at that time that was really a competitor to Richard, ‘cause he taught this guy his backwards technique. They went back and forth on who beat whom at the meets. Richard broke more state and national track records than any one athlete in his time. It was really a beautiful sight to see when he did his thing. He could have also excelled in golf. Man, he had a perfect swing. And up until he was diagnosed and became ill, he was a mean competitor on the course. In his mid life years, he became a founder of the Independent Bikers Club, and for the past 30 years was well known for his tattoo work. There are many people that carry one of his tatt’s. All in all, his lived BIG. Every day was an adventure to uncover! When he walked into a room, he filled it up. He LOVED to make people laugh. He was my hero. I loved him and miss him. His loving sister

By: Pedro Ominous skies could not deter the gathering of biker families and foster families alike at Creekside Park in James City, NC on May 14th. Hosted by Xclusive Ryderz MC of Havelock, and in coordination with Easter Seals/UCP, the purpose of this event was to honor the foster parents who welcome children into their homes and provide the family structure these kids need. Since May was Foster Parent Appreciation Month and the weather was warm, XRMC decided a cookout would be a great way to show the love. The aroma of grilling burgers, compliments of Keith Strange of Annabelle’s Restaurant in New Bern, filled the air and made mouths water. Food Lions of James City and Newport, plus various club members provided the rest of the grub, while Xclusive Ryderz did the cooking. Several other clubs rode out to show their support, including Prolific Ryderz, Crucial Perception, the SoWhat?! Ryders and the Double B’s. Hilton of New Bern provided a two-night stay in their luxury hotel and Easter Seals donated a computer, both awesome door prizes for the lucky ticket holders. New Bern Parks & Recreation donated the use of the pavilion for the event. Special thanks to all involved for your generous hearts. The support and love shown at this event made it a great success. The foster families were laughing and having a good time, while getting to know the biker family. And of course, the kids loved the motorcycles and getting to see them up close and personal. The rain held off and everyone left with smiles and full bellies. Xclusive Ryderz looks forward to making next year’s event even better, with more food, more fun, and more foster families in attendance.

By Angelica Roman Saturday, June 4th was a great day to ride, and an even better day to ride for a cause. Ray Price, Inc. and the Blue Knights NCII joined together to host the 7th Annual Officer Down Memorial Ride. Though the forecast threatened rain, the sun shined brightly all morning long. The registration table was crowded with people as members of the Blue Knights signed up riders and passengers, handing out goodie bags with ride pins, Ray Price coupons, wristbands to Locked & Loaded for lunch and route guides. While waiting for the ride to take off, riders and customers enjoyed the entertainment of the one-man band performing crowd favorites. The Parts & Accessories Swap Meet was in full swing at the Ray Price Clearance Center. The MotorSports Mall was open with tons of Ray’s memorabilia and parts - even one of his old Harley-Davidson Sportsters was on display! Several customers set up shop across the street to sell their own parts and accessories, and offered great deals. “I was just checking out this leather jacket and the guy said, ‘$35’ and I said, ‘I’ll take it!’” said one enthusiastic Ray Price employee. Other customers happily walked away with like-new saddlebags, jackets, pipes, and more, and sellers left with a clean garage and some cash in their pockets. The Blue Knights rounded up everyone for a ride meeting and prayer. More than 200 riders and passengers headed out to their bikes and lined up along the road next to Ray Price. The roar of nearly 200 motorcycles could be heard for miles as the escorted ride took off down the road. This year’s Officer Down Memorial Ride raised $5,500. The donations will go to the 200 Club, which provides financial aid to families of officers killed in the line of duty, and to provide financial aid to officers with health needs. Ray Price and the Blue Knights both hope to continue to grow the ride and attract more riders each year. By: David Ayers American Legion Riders Post 55 in Winston-Salem, NC hosted a ride and cook out for the veterans, at The VA Hospital in Salisbury on May 21, 2011. Members from Rolling Thunder, Crossed Rifles, and other riders from the area joined them in the ride. The cook out was a bigger success than anyone could have imagined. The riders were welcomed by the veterans with smiling faces, thanking everyone for coming and spending Armed Forces Day with them. Over 100 plates of hamburgers, hot dogs, and all the fixin’s were served to the vet’s and riders. The veterans surprised the ALR with a gift of a H-D Road King model as a token of their appreciation for having the cook out and showing them that they are not forgotten! The riders helped with serving the vets and while eating together, talked with them and listened to all the stories about their time in the service. Some vets told about their love of motorcycles and how they hoped to get back on a bike one day. After the cook out, the riders thanked all the veterans and let all know that we would be back again, to honor them for serving our country and fighting for our freedom. The riders gave each vet at the hospital $5 in change to use in the vending machines during their stay. The ALR also had a 50/50 drawing and 50/50 bug run for the riders to take part in. The 50/50 drawing was held after the cook out and the veterans joined in. Buck Tuttle won the drawing and gave the winnings back so we can use it to help the vets during another event. The 50/50 Bug Run was held back at the Legion, and Russ Chambers was the winner, with a bug hitting near bulls-eye. Russ also donated his winnings back. Thanks to all the riders who came out to honor our veterans on Armed Forces Day!

10th Annual Angier BikeFest

By: ChromeDoll The 10th Annual Angier BikeFest was held Saturday, the 4th of June and was a huge success. The day’s festivities began early in the morning with a welcome from Ricky Temple, Chamber President-Elect, remarks from Mayor R.H. Ellington, an invocation from Rev. Duane Partin of Angier Memorial United Methodist Church, the presentation of the Colors by the Harnett Central JROTC and the National Anthem being sung by Wendy Dunn. After the opening ceremonies, a poker run was held, which was organized by Seven Sabres Brotherhood Motorcycle Riding Club. The 65-mile ride began at the Angier Fire Department and made three stops including Dunn, Bunnlevel and Flat Branch Fire Departments. The proceeds from the ride will be donated to the Harnett County Fallen Firefighters Memorial Fund. The ride itself raised a little more than $1000. This of course did not include monies raised from other events during the day. Speaking of events, a ride-in bike show was held and sponsored by RLT Construction and First Bank. The winners were: Ginger Hall (Domestic Cruiser); Buddy Bervbe (Chopper; Buddy also donated his winnings back); Thomas Johnson (Metric); John DeYoung (Trike); and Best in Show went to Jeff Waller. Congratulations to all of you! This year, a new event was added to the mix, the first ever “Consignment Bike Auction”. The auction was organized and sponsored by Johnson Properties/Realtors & Auctioneers, Inc. Dale Young, project manager. There were eleven items donated and fifteen consignment items, including a Fat Boy, High Rise Go Cart, an Artic Car 4-wheeler, and various other bikes. Several of the consignment items were sold and those that were not were due to the reserve not being met. All donated items were auctioned off. The Chamber would like to thank everyone that donated items to the first Bike Fest Auction. Some of these donated items included a 3 day / 2 night Myrtle Beach stay; $100 grocery gift

card to Carlie C’s IGA; a leather jacket & half helmet from Cycle Gear in Raleigh; an Angier Fire Department firemen’s helmet; gift cards from Applebee’s and Twin Performance and other miscellaneous bike accessories. Throughout the day a variety of entertainment was available from The Blenders, Soul Evidence, Ellington Studios, WA Creech, and Connection. DJ, Eric Byrd provided music on the Broad St. area. This year’s event brought together approximately 7000 bike enthusiasts, along with about 2500 bikes. Of these bikes, the Blue Knights, riders for the fallen police, made a stop at the festival as well. I was told that almost 500 bikes were on that ride. Not only was this event successful because of the many people who came out to enjoy it, but because of the sponsors, too. We’d all like to personally thank the sponsors which include: Full Throttle Sponsor - Johnson Properties/Realtors & Auctioneers, Inc.; Side Car Sponsor - Ray Price, Inc.; Chrome Sponsor - Allstate Capital Investment Partners, Angier Computers, Fiesta Mexicana, Images In Time, and Team Powersports; Leather Sponsor - Carolina Signs, First Bank, First Citizens, and RLT Construction; Kickstart Sponsor: Jay & Nicole Locklear-Realtors, Locked & Loaded, Advance Signs & Service, and Cape Fear Sports & Promotions. Also thanks to the many vendors who provided food, crafts and the different organizations who provided information. The local Boy Scout Troop #125 was there to close the festivities with a flag retirement and help with the clean up after the BikeFest. Plans for a 2012 BikeFest are already in the works; so for those who missed out on this year’s event, keep an eye out for next year’s date. I’m sure I’ve probably missed names of those who should be thanked, there were so many of you but please note everyone who participated in the event is truly appreciated. We had a terrific time and look forward to the bigger and better 2012 Angier BikeFest!

Crusin’ The Coast Spring Beach Bike Rally

By: DPapaBear Nifong When Myrtle Beach City passed their helmet and noise ordinance laws, everyone figured the beach rally was history. But some of the bikers and biker establishments around the North Myrtle Beach area and the south end around Murrells Inlet area just would not say die. They continued to have a spring and fall rally while staying out of the city of Myrtle Beach. This year was no exception. Arriving on Tuesday at the North Myrtle Beach area, I saw more bikers early in the week than I had seen the last couple of years over the weekend. I saw the best crowd hanging out at the Swing Bridge Saloon since the laws were passed. DEM BOYS Bar-B-Que cooked some up real fine eats. They had chicken and pork and Swing Bridge Saloon hosts one night with free food! They usually have a great DJ playing and karaoke with some regulars who are pretty darn good. Later in the week as I made way to the south end around Garden City and Surfside Beach areas was certainly not a disappointment. I saw more bikes there than I have seen in years at the rally along with more vendors than previous years. In my mind, that’s a sure sign that the beach rally weeks are coming back. It is still not at the level it was before the city of Myrtle Beach said we were not wanted, but it is making a comeback without them! On the other hand, I was disappointed in the number of bikers I saw supporting the city of Myrtle Beach! Have you forgotten so quickly? But, I guess I can understand a little, since you can find lodging within the city limits for $40-50 a night. But how long do you think until they will start goug-

ing us again? There is plenty to do and see outside the city of Myrtle Beach and I think the businesses on the north and south ends of the strand will certainly appreciate it! On Wednesday I got together with a group of 11 bikes from about 9 different states and Canada for a day trip to Charleston. It was the first time we had ever met, made new friends, and had a great ride. On Thursday we made a day trip to the Wilmington/Carolina beach area and rode the ferry back across to Southport. Most of us had made the ride before but couple had not, so it was something new for them. So one can always find something to do with great friends, companionship, and riding if they try, not to mention the usual bars, vendors, and hangouts. So if you are one that has given up on the Crusin’ The Coast Beach Rally, make plans for next year and come on down and check it out. For pictures from the rally go to www.FullThrottleMagazine. com and download all you want for free.

El BAB Shrine Club 6th Annual Spring Poker Run

By: Ned McKenzie What might have seemed like a small rally to some was a big success for the El BAB Shrine Club 6th Annual Spring Bike Rally in Barnwell, S.C on Saturday, May 21st. The rally is an annual fund-raiser for the Shrine Club and this year’s spring rally drew the largest crowd the Shriners have seen in recent years. Participants rode from Barnwell to Allendale, Branchville, Finland, Williston, and Snelling before returning to the Shrine Club for food, music, and a good time. Starting at 9:30 am, over 100 bikers and riders rode under cloudless skies and a warming summer sun on the 120-mile poker run. Hosting the bikers were A.P.’s in Allendale, Joyce’s in Branchville, Edisto Country Store in Finland, Ashley’s in Williston and Fritz & Friends in Snelling. At 4:30 pm the bikers were police escorted from Snelling approximately 7 miles to Barnwell where they rode once around The Circle (Barnwell’s downtown) and then back five miles to the El BAB Shrine Club. There they were treated to barbecue chicken plates, country music by “Black Diamond” a young band of Williston, and the opportunity for cold drinks. Riders generously donated money to the Shriners in support of the club, which in recent years has sent $20,000 annually to the Shriner’s Hospitals, one of which is located in Greenville,

S.C. They purchased chances on a shotgun and a party cooler to help the local Shriners. They also purchased tickets on a 2011 Harley-Davidson Wide Glide to be given away at the August rally with proceeds of that drawing going directly to Shriner’s Hospitals. El BAB President Tom Rivers said Saturday’s response was “excellent”. “This Spring Rally was one of the largest in recent years. We really appreciate everyone turning out and supporting us,” said Rivers. One of those attending was Omar Temple Potentate Johnny McClary, also a member of El BAB Shrine Club and Mayor of Hilda in Barnwell County. McClary said, “It is great when everyone can have such a good time and support the Shriners.” Later that evening David Cooler of Bamberg entertained the crowd with his special brand of country music. The El BAB Shrine Club invites all motorcycle enthusiasts to its Fall Rally on August 13 as well as the many Omar Temple events throughout the year. Look for upcoming events on the El BAB Shrine Club Facebook page or Omar Temple web site, www.omarshriners.org. Shriners support Shriner’s Hospitals, which provide care to burned and crippled children. For more information on Shrine and its hospitals, go to www.shrinerhq.org.

Bros & Bro-ettes

When July gets here we are full blown into the summer season. Hot and humid days and good ole Carolina muggy nights; I love it. Of course July is best known for the celebration of our independence and the fireworks displays. Hope your firecracker wasn’t a dud! July 4th is a special day for America and truly should be celebrated. It is a time of recognizing our freedom and the birth of democracy. On July 4th, 1776 the Congress officially adopted the Declaration Of Independence and declared America a free republic. Every American should read the Declaration Of Independence and then thank God for being born in the United States Of America! Then there is another day that should also be celebrated, the day you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior! Just as July 4th is an important day of freedom, so is the day you became a born again Christian! This day is certainly a day of freedom, a day each one that has experienced it never forgets. A day you declare your independence from the bondage of eternal death and celebrate the free gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ! Freedom isn’t free! Blood has been shed to obtain it! Men and women have fought for Americans to be free, and we are thankful for their sacrifice. Jesus defeated death, hell and the grave for every person if they will receive Him as their sacrifice. His blood was shed so each and everyone could accept the free gift of salvation; Have You? July 4th is an awesome day of independence, but one day it will be absolutely useless to you! Do you have a Born Again Day?

That is the day that determines your true independence from death and declares life eternal for you! Today could be that day! Pray the Biker’s Prayer on this page, mean it in your heart as you pray it out loud, and begin celebrating your true freedom and independence as a Born Again Christian! Now let’s go mid-night riding on some of these hot Carolina muggy nights!

My True Story

By: Nelson Grant I am your typical second time around biker. I am now 57, but rode from around 17 all through my 20s. Then I was young, wanted to be a little wild, loved to ride, party, even rode with a small club for a good many years. We all built our choppers and worked on them all week so we could ride on the weekends. Life was good, but hard on the family. I finally gave up the Harleys for a down payment on a house, but I never regretted it. Then came other things like career, too much partying, divorce, starting my own business, realizing there was a God in charge instead of me, and a second marriage. Before I knew it, I was 50 with 5 wonderful grandchildren between our 3 kids. Life was still good, but all my friends were getting Harleys! It started with a weekend rental of a Road King, then with surprising support from my wife, Bobbie, suddenly we owned a 98 Road King Police. Then a year later we moved up to a 2002 Ultra Classic. Life was really good. Bobbie and I went to a rider’s course through Gaston College and we got her a 650 Yamaha V-Star. She’s a 1st time biker. Bobbie is also a 6 year survivor of breast and thyroid cancer. She started riding after her recovery and I feel this was a big help with her confidence and other aspects of her recovery. She continues to be cancer free. There’s no way to say how great this has been for us. I know all who ride understand! Sometimes we ride double up on long trips. Sometimes we each ride our own. We have friends we travel with and have met so many wonderful people over the last 6 years or so. Life has truly been good. The bikes have brought us a lot of joy but have also brought us closer together. There is nothing like a long day of riding followed by a few drinks in a hot tub! Now let me get to the reason for writing all this. In January of 2011, I started having a backache, which I thought was due to several things I had done, lifting a heavy tail gait and pushing a truck. Between my family doctor, a chiropractor, and finally an orthopedic MD, who all took x-rays, they treated me for a pulled muscle for around 2 months. I got some relief, but enough pain

57

medication can help anything. Finally in March I said we are doing an MRI and the results weren’t good. I had cancer in my vertebrae that had caused a compression fracture making one of my vertebrae’s about 2/3 it’s normal size, and also cancer in my esophagus. Suddenly life wasn’t so good! I had to have surgery to replace the vertebrae and stabilize my spine so I wouldn’t become paralyzed. The surgery went well and I began radiation treatments. I finished them and am now doing chemo and, all things considered, I am doing well. But about the bikes, the doctor said no riding for this year. “Damn! Maybe a 3 wheeler next year.” “Hey! Maybe it’s not so bad. It’s really up to God”. I decided it was best to sell both bikes since it is spring. I just went and turned in the tags the other day. It was a pretty sad occasion for me. It sure felt like the end of something. When I got to the DMV, there in the parking lot were 2 Harleys; a Heritage Softail and a Softail Deluxe. One guy, a father with his 14-yearold son, started explaining how he had allowed the insurance to run out, and all the hassle DMV had given him before he was able to get a new tag. Sound familiar? I stood around till they finished and then wished them well as they fired them off and rode away with that Harley grin across their faces. I made my way into the DMV and took my place in line. Luckily, it was not very crowded. I overheard a guy in the next line ask the clerk if he was supposed to keep his insurance card and registration with him on his bike or did it matter? He sounded like a first time owner to me! I looked over at him and gave him a nod as he looked my way. I turned in my tag and took my time going out so I could talk to the first time Heritage Softail owner. Man, was he proud! He told me everything about how he had found the bike and was able to get the money to buy it. I bragged on his bike till he was really grinning. It really was a nice ride. I wished him well, we shook hands, and then he fired it up, and finally rode away. I stood and watched and somehow felt a little less empty inside, a little more hopeful. Ride on for me Brother. God be with you! Maybe I’ll catch you next year.

Red & White 14th Annual Spring Bash

CRAZY SHOTS

C AB s All rmit Pe

By: Kathy Johnson The Red & White Annual Bash, as all other years, meets all your expectations. They are prepared with a great amount of food, great entertainment, and prizes you really want to win. The Annual Bash was held at Crazy Shots in Hillsboro and judging from the attendance, busy is an understatement. I know they had enough food for over 500 people and at 2:30 it was running out. However, that was not really a problem and, miraculously, more was put out. Well, with the food going so quickly, I probably do not have to mention how good it was and we all know the sauce of choice was Thunderbolt. The entertainment was also exceptional. Neil Donnelly, also known as The Magic Man, was performing. Anyone that has had the opportunity to see him knows Neil does not take a break. When he does stop singing he works the crowd doing some of the best hand illusions that just make you wonder WHAT JUST HAPPENED? Neil “magically” made sand come out of a little boy’s ear and later in the day I was told the little boy would still tilt his head expecting sand might come out. Also, every year the coveted flat screen TV is given away at the bash. I would like to address one thing with the TV give away. When you see 81 out before the event selling tickets for the TV, my advice is to buy one. Limited amount of tickets or a cut off at a certain number means just that. Don’t get pissed that you did not get a ticket cause they sold out early the day of the event. That is what is called a fair drawing. This MoN & WeD year’s winner was Jerry Fowler. Pool Tournament 8pm Another suggestion; get to the party early. I never have a problem arriving FRIDAY early for a great time. I hope everyone Karaoke W/ Ron & Lynda got a chance to shop the 81 table and get the latest support gear. Their designs SATuRDAY never disappoint! Door prizes were endBand or Karaoke less as were the drinks being served up that day. SuNDAY Well, I am sure a lot of you needed a NASCAR few days to recoup after that slam-dunk. But then that’s when you know you had Credit Cards Accepted a good time or if someone else had to Mon-Thurs. 2-until , Fri-Sun 11-until tell you about the time you had. Durham 81 & Crazy Shots thank all for coming 919-732-1003 out and for all the support. They look 668 N. Churton St. forward to seeing you at their next event. Hillsborough, NC

Pilgrimage To DC 2011

Mark Terry, Assistant Director, Statesville HOG Nature has its way with the birds and butterflies and the blue whales when they migrate each year and changing of the seasons. While man is the dominate species on this earth with the ability to think and reason, we, like the lesser animals, find that when May rolls around we cannot override the natural desire to head to our nation’s capital for an event that is simply known as “Rolling Thunder”. From every direction, regardless of the distance and weather, hundreds of thousands of true patriots are drawn to DC for what has become one of the largest gatherings of motorcyclist in the world. Regardless of race, sex, age, brand or type of bike they ride to honor our military men and women who are serving, have served, and those that died for their country. The organization “Rolling Thunder” has worked hard to keep those POW/MIA soldiers, especially from the Vietnam era, front and center and we all ride for those that cannot. 2011 marks the 24th Annual Rolling Thunder “Ride to the Wall” and the 29th year the Vietnam Memorial Wall has been in Washington, DC. What is even more exciting to me than the estimated 400,000 motorcycles present are the tens of thousands of people that line the parade route showing their support. Unless you have made this pilgrimage you would not understand but it starts when you are still hours away from DC and you see hundreds of people on overpasses holding American flags, waving and giving the peace sign. You see veterans wearing full dress military uniforms standing at attention and sheriff and police cars with their flashing lights waving you on from overhead. The excitement grows as you arrive in our nation’s capital and find more motorcycles than cars in your hotel parking lot. The Harley shops in the area were buzzing with thousands of visitors and this year we made a point of heading to Washington Harley-Davidson where Rolling Thunder was set up. What separates this event from so many you attend is that we are there for a special reason and it was awesome to find that the patriots at Washington HD were feeding us free, had all the free bottled water we could drink and a fantastic band playing for our entertainment. They had pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, and Bar B-Q with chips. I appreciate that and made a point of buying a few things from them while there to show my support for them. Rolling Thunder had tents set up as did other vendors around the dealership and it was really an exciting place to be. Like most we try to get our sightseeing in early. This year I added Union Station and the Nationals baseball stadium to my list of things to see, as well as a nice ride both ways on the George Washington Parkway. One thing I have learned in the two years of attending this event is that you want to get up really early on Sunday morning and arrive at the Pentagon parking lot as early as possible. We managed to get there each year between 6-6:30am and you are definitely not early as a few thousand bikes will already be there. I always set my alarm for 5am, but find that I will be

61

awakened early by the beautiful sound of a Harley firing up which is like a trumpet playing revelry to wake the troops in the morning. The flow of bikes from both directions into the Pentagon parking lots is continuous for almost 8 hours and once the parade begins at 12 noon it takes 3 ½ hours to get all the bikes out moving two rows at a time side by side. The national anthem is sung, there is a fly over by four fighter jets in formation and the first bikes begin to fire up and leave out. Arriving at 6:15 am we were in row 18 with about 200 bikes per row. We did not even start our bikes until around 12:25pm. While you can arrive at any time up to about 3pm I really enjoy being there early to walk around and meet the people. They come from all 48 lower states, Alaska, and also from Canada. They all have interesting stories about the ride in, the weather they encountered, and where they are going when they leave. For those few hours you are true friends with everyone present and nothing matters except that it is Memorial Day weekend and we are all there to pay our respects to our military men and women. We had the pleasure of having Sarah Palin join us for the ride this year. She has a son in the military and has proven to me that she is a true patriot. Since I was riding solo this year the only thing better for me would have been for Sarah to have climbed on my bike for the parade. I don’t ride anyone on my bike but my wife, but I don’t think she would have minded this exception. When Monday morning rolled around the crowd left town as fast as it arrived, but you can always find a dozen new friends heading your way to share the highways with as the sea of red, white and blue disappears into the sunset until they return again next year. I am not a veteran, but one of the patches on my vest reads “I WAS NOT THERE, BUT I STILL CARE”. I am proud to be one of the hundreds of thousands able to make this pilgrimage to honor all our veterans on Memorial Day. This ride is over until next year but we must never forget. POW / MIA God Bless.

Poker Run In Honor Of Lance Corporal Daniel Swaim Scholarship Fund

By: Sunshine On Saturday, June 4th, The VFW / American Legion Post 506 (East Bend) and Post 336 (Hamptonville) held their annual Lance CPL. Daniel Swaim Scholarship Fund Poker Run. Mr. Larry Holbrook of Post 506 helped in coordinating the event. The ride started at 10 am at the American Legion Post in East Bend and with a prayer and the Pledge Of Allegiance, the bikers where off. It was a hot day, but 52 bikers, some from out of state, came out to show their support. Yadkin County Sheriff Ricky Oliver and Deputy Hall escorted the bikers. The ride was over 80 miles long through the scenic back roads of Yadkin County. The first stop was in Forbush at Cutter’s Inc. owned and operated by Rex Mackie. After some refreshments, they were off again. It was a nice ride and everyone had a great time. The ride ended at the Yadkin Moose Lodge in Yadkinville where food and drinks were awaiting them. They also had a 50/50 drawing and best and worst hand prizes thanks to some vendors and business that donated prizes and money. All proceeds go for scholarships at Forbush High School and Starmont High School in Yadkin County. Everyone had a great ride and fun time. If would like more info on The Lance CPL. Daniel Swaim Scholarship Fund or would like to donate, please contact Mr. Larry Holbrook, American Legion Post 506, 220 Hwy 67 South, East Bend, NC (336) 469-1466

Raleigh HOG Homecoming

By Angelica Roman The 2011 Raleigh HOG Homecoming kicked off on Saturday, June 11th at Ray Price Harley-Davidson. Inside, a slideshow of photos from the previous year’s activities and rides played on the big screen, while members participated in a dealership-wide scavenger hunt that lead them to all the various departments, searching for various objects. The winner, HOG member and Rider’s Edge instructor Jim Williams, missed only one of the 15 questions and won a $100 Ray Price gift card. Each department also had special “HOG Homecoming” specials for the morning, offering items such as the CobraCam, H-D GPS, men’s shirts, women’s sandals and more at great prices. Outside, the HOG chapter registered members for the lunch ride and talked to prospective members about the group. Nationwide’s Nobles Agency, the dealership’s official insurance group, was there to talk to riders about their great rates, and handed out various give-a-ways - the crowd favorite was the color changing cups! Music played from the speakers while HOG safety officer Stan Simmerson offered free safety checks to bikers before the ride, which many riders took advantage

of. Another group offered Bike Blessings to everyone. A few games of Corn Hole were played before the group left for lunch. Around noon, the ride meeting was held, a prayer was said, and the ride leaders gathered their groups. The ride left Ray Price and headed to Freedom Biker Church for lunch, and everyone played various bike games and got to know more members. The activities didn’t stop there. Sunday, the group gathered at Ray Price Harley-Davidson for a group ride to the Carolina Mud Cats game against the Tennessee Smokies and a group lunch at the ballpark. Ray and Jean Price joined the HOG group for the game as well. The stadium provided parking for all the bikes, and the group headed up to a private section to enjoy the game. Ray Price Harley-Davidson had their “Jumpstart Road Show” on location where participants could ride a real Harley and experience the power of a Big Twin! This was a big hit for adults and kids alike. For more information on Ray Price events, or Raleigh HOG, go to www.rayprice.com or call 919-832-2261. Ray Price H-D is located at 1126S Saunders Street in Raleigh, NC.

Statesville HOG Chapter #3548 Celebrates 25 Years

By: Mark Terry, Assistant Director Statesville HOG On May 13, 1986 a group of folks that enjoyed riding out of Tilley’s Harley-Davidson in Statesville, NC started the first HOG Chapter (Harley Owners Group) in North Carolina. The first member to sign up was Mr. Tommie Holmes who no longer rides today, but who still likes to talk about his days in the Chapter and all the friends he made. Thousands of members and millions of miles later the Chapter gathered at Sloan Park in Rowan County on Saturday May 14, 2011 to celebrate a milestone. Statesville HOG was the first chapter in North Carolina and the current members are proud to still be going strong after 25 wonderful years. Even though the weather was not the best and it put a damper on the planned bike games, we still had over 20 people ride their bikes and had over 70 people in attendance. The weather did not slow down the other fun and games planned which included drawing for a poker hand, Bingo, and LeftRight-Center. The grand finale was the drawing for a Smith & Wesson handgun. Dane Campbell of Statesville, NC purchased the winning raffle ticket. There was plenty of good food along with a large sheet cake with the HOG logo in the icing marking the 25th Anniversary. Past chapter directors Rodney Hinson, Jim Gardner, and Dave Grove were in attendance as was current Director, Martha Mitchell. The group also honored all the lady riders present. Some of these ladies have ridden a lot longer than they would

like for me to report and we enjoyed hearing tales of their riding experiences over the years. Statesville HOG meets the second Sunday of every month at the dealership at 2pm. We welcome all Harley riders to come and visit us and hopefully you will decide to join and help us continue forward for another 25 years. Statesville HOG would like to thank Don & Robinette Tilley and all the folks at Tilley’s Harley Davidson Statesville for their support of this celebration and all the support they give the chapter over the years.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine

www.FullThrottleMagazine.com The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!

I was a very happy person. My wonderful girlfriend and I had been dating for over a year, and so we decided to get married. There was only one little thing bothering me - her beautiful younger sister. My prospective sister-in-law was twenty-two, wore very tight mini-skirts, and generally was braless. She would regularly bend down when she was near me, and I always got more than a pleasant view of her private parts. It had to be deliberate. She never did it when she was near anyone else. One day her “little” sister called and asked me to come over to check the wedding invitations. She was alone when I arrived, and she whispered to me that she had feelings and desires for me that she couldn’t overcome. She told me that she wanted to make love to me just once before I got married and committed my life to her sister. Well, I was in total shock, and couldn’t say a word. She said, “I’m going upstairs to my bedroom, and if you want one last wild fling, just come up and get me.” I was stunned and frozen in shock as I watched her go up the stairs. When she reached the top she pulled off her panties and threw them down the stairs at me. I stood there for a moment, then turned and made a beeline straight to the front door. I opened the door, and headed straight towards my car. Lo and behold, my entire future family was standing outside, clapping! With tears in his eyes, my father-in-law hugged me and said, “We are very happy that you have passed our little test. We couldn’t ask for a better man for our daughter. Welcome to the family!” And the moral of this story is: Always keep your condoms in your car. Nancy Pelosi called Harry Reid into her office one day and said, “Harry, I have a plan to win back Middle America in

Spokes & Jokes

2012!” “Great Nancy, but how?” asked Harry. “We’ll get some cheesy clothes and shoes, like most middle Americans wear, then stop at the pound and pick up a Labrador retriever. Then, we’ll go to a nice old country bar in Montana and show them how much admiration and respect we have for the hard working people living there.” So they did, and found just the place they were looking for in Bozeman, Montana. With the dog in tow, they walked inside and stepped up to the bar. The bartender took a step back and said, “Hey! Aren’t you Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi?” “Yes we are!” said Nancy, “And what a lovely town you have here. We were passing through and Harry suggested we stop and take in some local color.” They ordered a round of bourbon for the whole bar, and started chatting up a storm with anyone who would listen. A few minutes later, a grizzled old farmer came in, walked up to the Labrador, lifted up its tail, looked underneath, shrugged his shoulders and walked out. A few moments later, in came another old farmer. He walked up to the dog, lifted up its tail, looked underneath, scratched his head and left the bar. For the next hour, another dozen farmers came in, lifted the dog’s tail, and left shaking their heads. Finally, Nancy asked, “Why did all those old farmers come in and look under the dog’s tail? Is it some sort of custom?” “Lord no,” said the bartender. “Someone’s out there running around town, claiming there’s a Labrador retriever in here with two assholes!”

people if they’d seen a little kitten. No. Nobody had seen a stray kitten. So he prayed, “Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping,” and went on about his business. A few days later he was at the grocery store, and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. This woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, “Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?” She replied, “You won’t believe this,” and then told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child had begged again, so the mom finally told her little girl, “Well, if God gives you a cat, I’ll let you keep it.” She told the pastor, ‘I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. And really, Pastor, you won’t believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A kitten suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws outspread, and landed right in front of her.”

An airplane was about to crash; there were 5 passengers on board, but only 4 parachutes. The first passenger, Nancy Pelosi, said, “I am the Speaker of the House. And I am the smartest woman in American history, so America ‘s people don’t want me to die.” She took the first parachute and jumped out of the plane. The second passenger, John Kerry, said, “I’m a Senator, and a decorated war The pastor of a local church had a kitten hero from the Navy of the United States that climbed up a tree in his backyard and of America.” So he grabbed the second then was afraid to come down. The pasparachute and jumped. The third pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc. The senger said, “I am President Obama, the kitty would not come down. The tree was chosen one and the SMARTEST man not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor EVER elected President. The world decided that if he tied a rope to his car and needs me, I can’t afford to die.” So he pulled it until the tree bent down, he could took the third parachute and left the then reach up and get the kitten. That’s what plane. The fourth passenger, ex-President he did, all the while checking his progress George W. Bush, said to the fifth pasin the car. He then figured if he went just senger, a 10-year-old schoolgirl, “I have a little bit further, the tree would be bent lived a full life, and served my country sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But the best I could. I will sacrifice my life as he moved the car a little further forward, and let you have the last parachute.” The the rope broke. The tree went ‘boing!’ and little girl said, “That’s okay, Mr. Presithe kitten instantly sailed through the air dent. There’s a parachute left for you. - out of sight. The pastor felt terrible. He The SMARTEST man EVER elected walked all over the neighborhood asking President took my book bag.”

Rally N Randleman

By: DPapaBear On Saturday, May 28, the Full Throttle Bar had their 2nd annual Rally N Randleman. Things started out kinda slow as there were other rides/events going on that day as well. Rally N Randleman features bands all day and into the night. They also had vendors, a bike show, burnouts, give-aways, raffles, and bikini bike wash girls. Robin and Liz washed bikes all day without hardly ever stopping. The crowd started increasing around 3-3:30 with a lot of riders coming in to hear the Wild Country band which provided the music during the day part of the event. There were other bands also playing throughout the later evening and night until? They had a burnout competition with the winner receiving $100 and a new tire. The bike show featured trophies for each class and best of show. Vendors provided a choice of food items as well as shirts, boots, jewelry, and riding gear. The weather was a little on the warm side but the day events took place under the cover over the go-cart track and the night events took place inside. Jeff has a great setup at the Full Throttle Bar with pool tournaments, live music, events, and rides taking place on a regular basis. So if you have not stopped by, then by all means, you

need too check it out. Also go to www.FullThrottleMagazine.com and look for the pics from the day’s event and follow Full Throttle Bar on Facebook as well. So, as always, ride long, ride hard, party often, stay safe, but always have FUN! Make new friends and visit with old friends as often as you can.

Independence Day

By: Bryan Boyett As we celebrate this treasured national holiday, we ought to pause and give thanks to the founders of our great nation, for they pledged not only their time and treasure, but their very lives as well. They risked everything to bring about a better life for all who dwell in this land we call the “home of the Brave”. The backbone of this monumental struggle against the oppression of the English Monarchy were individuals known as the Minutemen. This group of freedom fighters became the first of a long line of military personnel that have preserved all the freedoms we enjoy today. We, and all past generations of Americans, owe much to our military institutions and all who have served and continue to serve our country. Without their dedication and selflessness, you would not have the freedom to be reading this Full Throttle Magazine. I urge every one of us to remember this day as it should be remembered….honoring the patriots who gave their all to start this grand experiment we call a republic, a democracy, the United States Of America. So, while your enjoying the hamburgers and hotdogs, please pause to reflect on those freedom fighters that gave birth to a new nation we call the “land of the free”. And salute our men and women of the military, both past and present. The Carolinas

National Freedom Ride

By: Buddy Langley On May 21st 32 states participated in the National Freedom Ride, which grew from last year’s 26 states. I was the coordinator for NC/ SC this year so we started off at Rendezvous on Pelham Road in Greenville, SC. 19 bikes and 25 people rode over to Greer, SC to the Greer War Memorial where Rhonda Childs Uncle’s name (Richard T. Kennedy) is etched into the Memorial Wall. Our mission for this ride is to raise awareness for those who fought for our freedom, to recognize them, not only on Armed Forces Day, but to pay our respects for their bravery, unselfish courage, and commitment everyday. After spending time at the Memorial Park, we got back on the bikes and took the hourlong ride down to the Richard M. Campbell Veterans Home where we hung out with the veterans from every branch of service! Every biker on the National Freedom Ride signed a WE SUPPORT OUR TROOPS FLAG and I presented it to the veterans home and it is hanging up in the physical therapy area for all the veterans to enjoy. Let me say this, if you ever get a chance to visit a veterans’ home and it doesn’t pull at your heart, then you don’t have a heart!

This was an honor for Rhonda and me to coordinate and I am looking forward to doing it again next year! To see the joy on the faces of the veterans when we were going through and thanking them was enough to jerk tears out of quite a few bikers’ eyes! I’ll leave you with this thought; why wait till they are gone to thank them?
