Thunder www.TheThunderZone.com
s November begins, so do the annual toy runs. I am always amazed at the empathy that bikers feel toward those who are less fortunate. We always come out in numbers for good causes. Many people that I know ride on multiple toy runs and some have their special causes to support. Either way, it is a matter of heart and I applaud you all. Some dates do not have the best of weather, but unless it is a blizzard, I have seen many ride in less than ideal conditions. I recall, as many of you probably do, leaving out and making a few stops when it began snowing. It is much like getting caught in the rain together. Everyone just laughs at the next stop and the fun goes on until the mission is accomplished. Each year, with all the toy runs that are posted in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar, it boggles my mind that there can be that much need, but I am sure that there is. Sometimes I think being able to afford $20K motorcycles makes it hard to relate to people that are struggling to pay rent and electricity, much less the cost of a Christmas tree, food, and gifts. But I am sure that we all can remember the challenges we faced when we were younger and faced with these same circumstances. I just pray that the weather is primo and there is a great turn out for every toy run. Remember, some people count on us to be the Santa Claus of their Christmas. Please follow your heart and give as much as you can. Maybe it will make more of a difference than just helping with Christmas for a family. It may be just what they need to revive their spirits to make it through the winter. It may even make a long-range difference in their lives. On November 10th we celebrate the founding of the Marine Corps in 1775. November 11th is Veterans Day when we celebrate our veterans. Only a small percentage of the overall population are veterans, but in the motorcycle community it is far higher than that. For every one of you that served, we thank you. The Charlotte CBA Fall Swap Meet is November 14-15 at the Metrolina Fair Grounds in Charlotte, NC. It is the oldest and largest event of its kind on the east coast. It is a tradition with the bikers around the Carolinas. If you have never been to it, you should put it on your calendar. Thanksgiving falls on the 26th of November. While I am certain that everything is not perfect in everyone’s lives, I am sure that there is much to be thankful for. Many organizations like His Laboring Few Motorcycle Ministry provide free meals to the less fortunate on Thanksgiving and that in itself is something to be thankful for. There are many reasons in November to celebrate. Check out The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar in this issue and online at FullThrottleMagazine. com for many more events. Ride to as many as you can and may God bless you

Widow Maker CDR 4 Luv Of Kids Charity Bike Build By: Kathy Johnson The cover features Widow Maker CDR 4 Luv Of Kids charity bike. The build started in October of 2014 and the bike came to life and was fired up on September 15, 2015. This build was a labor of love. It was built to sell tickets to raffle off to one lucky winner. All the proceeds would go to 5 families with a child with medical conditions. The goal was to give each family five thousand dollars to assist with their excessive medical expenses. Hank Thibodeau, owner of Widow Maker CDR, along with his wife, Anne, made this their goal: to help families in need over the years. To achieve it has been their passion. Hank had 220 hours in this build. You say, “Wow!” I agree! He wanted it clean and smooth with everything precisely and intricately done. I asked him some questions about the charity bike. What did you like most about it? Hank liked that he used a metric V- Twin instead of the Harley Big Twin. He said it is a Widow Maker staple to use products in a fashion most other places steer clear of. The hardest hurdle to overcome in the beginning was making the Road Star 1600 engine fit in a frame originally designed for a Harley EVO. The next hardest thing (not Including giving it away) was the wiring. On metric bikes there is 3 times the wiring as a standard Harley. Getting all of the wiring hidden without having any of the wiring in the frame was a huge task. It was a very long process of maintaining the style Hank had in mind for the charity bike. Hank knew each part he chose was critical in keeping the flow of the bike’s design. He said one poorly chosen part would stick out like a sore thumb! Travis Ennis was the winner of the bike and he appreciated all that thought and work. He said it was the best $10 he ever spent. In the end, some people were inquiring what the value of the charity bike was. There was $15,266 parts and paint, labor, $2500 worth of sponsors and donations by paint and powder coaters, so to duplicate it would be about $21,000. But to the children Hank, Anne, and Dawson selected to receive the money from the charity bike raffle, Jax, Brynley, Jayda, Brooklyn, and Michie it was priceless. You can read more about these children and if you would still like to donate to any of them, please go to WidowMakerCDR.COM. Hank, Anne, and Dawson, on behalf of Widow Maker CDR, would like to thank everyone for their generosity and all the help with sponsorships, selling tickets, and the out pouring of support they received. I am sure you would like to know what is next for Widow Maker CDR. This time it will be full blown, going back to what Hank does best, which will be going as far out in left field as he can. That would be LOW & FAST with an element of concern just to be able to sit on the bike, much less ride it! The WTF factor and if you have the bank you can buy it. You can see more images from the 4 Luv Of Kids Charity Bike Raffle at FullThrottleMagazine.com.

Todd Jones Benefit Ride & Event By Charles Holcombe, AKA Uwharrie Charlie Tamarac Marina on High Rock Lake was the staging ground for this event. I just wish the weather could have been a lot better to us. Nonetheless, we marched on as if everything was all right and, hopefully, would fall into place. This benefit for Todd Jones was just that, a benefit, but had a turn for the worse when it was announced that Todd had lost his presence here on Earth due to an unfortunate motorcycle accident. RIP Todd. I wish I had some words of comfort, but I can think of no words to justify the absence of this man. It always amazes me to see the outpouring of Todd’s family and friends that have never met each other, but can come together intertwined for a single cause, to help a brother or sister in whatever way possible. Compassion runs deep no matter where you are from, who you are, or what you have. If you have ever toured through the beautiful roads around High Rock Lake and the Uwharrie Region you probably have made a stop at Tamarac Marina located on the West side of the lake in Salisbury, NC. It’s a very biker friendly place with lots of shade, food, and spirits. That is where I saw and knew Todd, a very beloved member of these surroundings and this neighborhood. He was the kind of person that believed in American values and its way of life. He was always smiling and pleasant to be around. It is with sudden tragedies like this that one just acts without thought to make an event that could benefit the loved ones left behind. There are many here to thank, I just don’t know all of them, and there were too many to name in this article. Although mucky and wet outside Shawn and Dan were out early preparing the meal for the end of the ride. There were many others running here and there for many different reasons to assist with the event. Some other folk began gathering around 8 and 9 am. The first rider rode in around 9:30 am and others followed. Soon there was a decent crowd for the conditions, even the “Save A Life - Grope Your Wife” bus was preparing for the trip so that everyone coming out today could go, bike or not. I’m glad everyone came! The ride started on time with yours truly leading and proud of it. Our first stop was Stars & Bars Tavern where a crowd was already gathering for their End Of Summer Bash, which was underway. The next stop was The Carriage Room, which is a growing favorite stop! On to Fat Jack’s where I was glad to be since it has been some time since seeing the folk there. The only time it didn’t rain on us was from there to Happy Days Place near Richfield. Much thanks to the stops that supplied and supported this ride! The weather was continuous, but we trudged forward to the last stop and the host of this event, Tamarac Marina. The food was ready and it was awesome, great job guys! Grand prizes, poker hand winners and some of the door prizes were being drawn and awarded while the Too Much Toni Band
was gearing up for the evening festivities. Such a great band! You can’t beat dancing, drinks, dinner, and a band on the river, folks. The celebration went on long after I left and I heard it was great! Some of the contributors for this event not mentioned yet are Elisha Wilson, Tarheel Diesel, Half Off Sporting Goods, Shaun Moon, Brandon Gardner, Tilley’s HD of Salisbury, Faith Farm Equipment, Swicegood Paper Products, Wal Mart, Harris Teeter, Lonnie Bridge and Donegan at American Legion Samuel C. Hart Post #14, Food Lion, East Coast Wings, Becks Wholesale, R & H Barringer, Will (Pup) Hege, Lynn Burris, and Wanda & Bob LaBianca. Thanks to the staff and assistants at Tamarac, you guys rock! Todd will always be remembered by many. Pix from the event are available for free online at www.FullThrottleMagazine.com/Event-Pictures. 4th Annual Tim Diffin “Riding With Angels” Memorial Run
SERVING THE LEGAL NEEDS OF BIKERS SINCE 1987
I’m Not Another Lawyer Who Rides... I’m A Biker Who Practices Law!
By: Jeanie Hood Carter The last Saturday in September means it’s time for the Annual Tim Diffin Riding With Angels Run Memorial Run. This year was not as heavily attended due to the rain, but there were still over 30 bikes and over 40 hard-core riders including 3 kids that made the run. Keeping with tradition, we started at the Dog House in Fayetteville with a prayer led by Tom, Tim’s twin brother. Stops were J&J’s Tavern, Lost Memories, Redneck Yacht Club, and back to the Dog House where the chef, Eric, had cooked up the delicious Italian meal followed by a cream cheese and raspberry tart. Yummy! Live acoustic music was performed by Backwoods Hellbellies out of the Piedmont area. Once everyone had a fully belly and the sheets were tallied from the run, prizes, raffles, and the auction started. Since all the money raised at this event goes to the Cumberland County Foster Children’s Christmas Fund, prizes are given in lieu of money. People were extremely generous this year, but with the rain and less riders BFBF was well under the amount made at last year’s event. On the lighter side, “Mr. Fayetteville” won a pair of handcuffs and Robin got her new shiny and sharp object, while Dore Ann won a new helmet and gave it to Pam Griffin so, she now is the proud owner of her own helmet. (She is loved by her friends.) Thomas Grebb, owner of Corner Pockets Pool & Billiards and Pam Griffin, owner of Louie’s Sports Bar & Tiki Bar, joined together and donated another $300 to the funds brought in for the day. Barry and Cari of Barry’s Performance were high bidders on a vest and Shawna also won a vest! Lots of prizes and auction items were going out to folks including jewelry, free pool, beer buckets, tattoos, knives,
tees, helmets, and more. It was like Christmas already. Thank you to the many supporters and riders, the Dog House, Eric who cooked, Beverly Rose Designs, Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson, M & M Leather, Hot Hog Leather, Baker American Cycles, Cycle Gear, Elite Tattoos, Lion Leather & Silver. Also, thank you to Vince Sittnick of VBS Photography & Chi Force Photography, “Bullet” BFBF VP, and the BFBF members who worked the event. Hopefully, I didn’t forget anyone. Please, remember older Foster Children in the system often get little if anything for Christmas. Gift cards and donations can be taken to DSS in your county or sent to BFBF to submit. www.BikersForBikersFoundation.com

The Sue Pariseau Memorial Run 2015 By: Everette “EZ” Short On Saturday, September 26th, the weatherman predicted an 80% chance of rain for that day. The day before, I had met with Patty and Dave Nuth, the illustrious host of the Sue Pariseau Memorial Run, and asked them, “Are we going to run in the rain?” Patty looked me straight in the eye and said, “Sue wouldn’t let it rain on us...” She was right and the ride went on without anything more than a warm misting all day. At Patty’s Dew Drop Inn, famous for being the biggest little bar on the beach, kickstands went up on schedule just around noon. After a rousing breakfast of Bloody Marys, assorted cocktails and Budweiser wake me ups, over a hundred riders and cages went roaring down Kings Highway to find the world renowned City Line Saloon, across from the Harley-Davidson Main Store on Highway #17, in Myrtle Beach. Once there, it was like a cross between a circus and a super sized southern family reunion, without all the mess. While ringmaster, JC Childers, greeted the crowd, his modelicious mixologist, Momo, was busy slinging stiff drinks, bad jokes, hearty hugs, long stories, and a lot of libations for so early in the day. Bike week wouldn’t officially start for another two days, but you wouldn’t know it by the number of riders on the tarmac outside the bar. The next stop was in the middle of Myrtle Beach at Barnacle Bills Raw Rum Bar (located on 8th Avenue North, across from The Zip Line) where William “Guage” Linsey holds court with a host of gorgeous barmaids like Carolynn and Billy Jo serving up the drinks, while his savvy chefs, JC and Jeff, served up some of the best food on the entire beach. I have to

tell you that if you haven’t been there to sample their exquisite fare, then you need to check this place out. Even the prices are right and the service is absolutely awesome. Soon enough, it was kickstands up for a short hop to Dog House Donny’s Saloon where Mr. Don Emery himself holds the title of King of Old School Cool for hanging onto the oldest biker bar still standing in Myrtle Beach, for almost two decades now. After a few moments to gather the libations, a heartfelt toast was made on the wall of the Sue Pariseau Memorial Well, located at the front entrance of the bar. If you don’t know what that is, then you’ve never clapped your noggin on it while walking in the front door. With a quick teary toast, it was off to the Tally Ho Bar & Grill at 3901 Dick Pond Road (Hwy #544) on the Socastee edge of Myrtle Beach, before wrapping up the party to head back to Patty’s Dew Drop Inn with a full fledged festival of food, fun, games, some off key singing of well worn tunes and a lot of reminiscing about a wonderful woman who brought together an extraordinary family of both blood and bond. Although Sue Pariseau left this world seven years ago, her spirit is still alive and well with us to this very day. I want to give a special thanks to Patty and David Nuth, as well as all the great people who worked together as a team to pull off another great run. I would also like to extend a big sloppy hug to the entire Pariseau family and all those who showed up en mass, despite the rain that stood down even when it had us surrounded. Some things stand as a testament of a hand larger than ours and the emotional feelings of that day are impossible to convey on paper. I guess you just had to be there, but if you want to see more pictures from the day and other events check us out at www.FullThrottleMagazine. com under the Event Pictures tab. While you’re there, be sure to sign up for our weekly Cruisin’ Calendar email alert about upcoming events. Horsefeathers Roadhouse Fall Jam Story by Alan Dockery Photo by Donna Melton Sometimes it’s a good idea to plan a rain date. So what the Horsefeathers Roadhouse Fall Jam was a week later than planned, they made sure everyone who came to the cool old place in Sherrills Ford, NC, still had a great time. Besides the Fall Jam for the bikers, the Queen City Corvette Club had Horsefeathers as a stop on their road rally. Spending the day with cool bikes and hot cars is always fun. Donna and the crew make sure bikers are welcome every day, but a couple times a year she likes to throw a party to show bikers how much they love us. By noon, the beer was cold and their famous food hot, so the party was on. It was kinda chilly as lots of bikes rolled in. Clear blue skies had folks warming fast. Soon the party heated up out back. Chris Cook and then the Ben Gatlin Band played on the big deck. Folks got into a few biker games. Jersey Bob won the slow race. Donna and Jennifer won the plunger and TP game. Some folks hung out on the front patio playing Giant Jenga and checking out the Corvettes as they came through. The Little Johnny Trailer Trash Band closed out the evening when the party moved inside.
Horsefeathers is a unique place on a Lake Norman cove in the Southeast corner of Catawba County, about a mile North of Hwy 150. 6th Annual Eagle Riders Dean Ferris Memorial Run By: Jerry Shelton The Eagle Riders is a small club within the Fraternal Order Of Eagles located at 5731 South Boston Highway in Sutherlin, VA. We like to ride motorcycles and help others doing it. We have just finished our 6th Annual Dean Ferris Memorial Poker Run, which we started working on in May. The 6th Annual Eagle Riders Dean Ferris Memorial Run started at Thunder Road Harley-Davidson in Danville, VA on August 22, 2015 with sign up 11am until 12:45 pm and kickstands up at 1 pm. We had 74 bikes and several cars and trucks sign up and, for a change, we had beautiful weather on this Saturday. We traveled approximately 84 miles with 4 stops for poker hand drawings. Upon our arrival at the club we where greeted by American flags lined up on the highway and about 20 of our group that had been getting the food ready. After hot dogs with homemade chili and slaw, chips, and soda, we moved on to our live auction, silent auction, 50/50, raffle drawing, and announcement of the poker run winner. After a few hours of all this, we took a short break, then on stage were two bands. This year Smith And Company and Improbable Cause bands donated their time to the cause. The last four years, these rides have been to benefit the Danville Cancer Association. We started in 2012 with the D.C.A. because we felt that it was necessary to donate to an organization that can reach out to a larger segment of need. Cancer is a terrible disease and the money stays local to provide to the
folks that help us raise the money. The Dean Ferris Memorial Run is the Eagle Riders only fundraiser and it is a year round job. We accept monetary donations as well as anything of value that we can auction when the ride comes around. This year, on Sept.14, 2015 we gave the D.C.A. checks for a total of $16,887.37 for a four-year total of $55,558.20! Next year’s ride will fall on the anniversary of the death of Dean Ferris and it would be great if we could make it our best yet. We need your help to keep fighting the battle. If you would like to donate of help, please contact President Eagle Riders, Jerry Shelton at 434-251-0994 or email shj19462001@yahoo.com.

Jasper-Beaufort ABATE of SC 12th Annual Stiletto Run By: Melissa Lewis On Saturday, September 19, 2015, JasperBeaufort ABATE of SC held its 12th Annual Stiletto Run. We were blessed with perfect, warm, sunny weather as many will remember purchasing ABATE hoodies just to keep warm under heavy overcast skies last year. The festivities kicked off at the Okatie Ale House in Okatie, SC where riders could purchase this year’s Stiletto Run clothing. 70 hands of poker were sold and riders drew their first card. At 1pm, kickstands went up, engines revved, helmets were donned, and riders were off to their next destination. Bikers traveled in small groups along the scenic backcountry roads and over the Talmadge Bridge overlooking Savannah, GA’s waterfront to the legendary Scores Gentlemen’s Club in Savannah, GA. Since the theme of the Stiletto Run is “boobies”, ABATE members and friends took in some sexy entertainment and had the chance to draw another card and relax. Well, some may have gotten more worked up, than relaxed, being in a gentlemen’s club and all. Old friends came together and new friendships were made. There wasn’t a person in that room who didn’t have a smile on his or her face. The roar of bikes from the parking lot signaled it was time to depart for our next stop, back over the GA/SC state line to historic Old Town Bluffton’s “The Dispensary”. Bikes flooded the cobblestone parking lot and lined Historic Calhoun Street, which had many tourists wondering if they had just stumbled onto a mini Sturgis amongst the quaint art galleries and cottage eateries. And it was time to EAT! The wonderful staff at The Dispensary were ready for some hungry bikers and orders flooded in for everything from their Asian Meatball appetizer to Shrimp Scampi, I also noticed a few “Southern Slammers”, an 8oz burger topped with smoked pork being carried by, and all this deliciousness was consumed at an epic rate! Boob grabbing, jokes, and laughter increased as the afternoon went on. We paused long enough to take a group photo before bikes started filing out of The Dispensary’s parking lot and taking myriad routes over to Hilton Head Island. We stopped along the way to take a short break and say “Hello” to our friends over at The Beach Break Grill. Some took this opportunity to refuel before going the short distance around the corner to the Gold Club of Hilton Head Island. The Gold Club had a plumbing snafu earlier in the day, but did not let us down. They opened their doors and after drawing the final card, bikers filled every available seat facing the tallest stripper pole I’ve ever seen. Beautiful ladies entertained us until it was time to announce the winners of the best and worst
poker hands and the raffle tickets. ABATE member Ronnie Mole won and donated his winnings back to ABATE. ABATE members Any and Deanna got up on stage and called out raffle numbers for prizes while the rest of the group struggled to read their tickets in the darkened club. To “claim” your prize, you had to show your boobies to the ladies handing out the prizes, men AND women alike, which prompted one spouse to jokingly yell out, “That’s it, you’re on the couch tonight!” Winners received gift certificates, and tee shirts donated by local businesses. Chad Fuller from the McGrath Law Group and PR spokesperson for ABATE got up, said a few words about all that ABATE has accomplished with regard to motorcyclists’ rights and thanked everyone for showing their support. The run wound down outside in the parking lot of The Gold Club where one member had so much fun, she wasn’t sure if she had put the t-shirt he had won into the “right” motorcycle saddlebag. “All I know it was a black bike”, she said. One look around the parking lot revealed mostly black bikes. We all laughed. Jasper Beaufort ABATE of South Carolina would like to thank the following sponsors: The Earl of Sandwich Pub, Beach Break Grill, Fat Baby’s Pizza and Subs, Morris Garage and Towing, Bluffton Auto Body, Tailgators, Jasper’s Porch, R Bar, BPC Motorsports, McGrath Law Group, Firefly Farm, Rebel Dog Cycles, Low Country Powersports, White Trucking, AQS Home Services, Sue’s Signature Clean, Forgotten Sons MC, Harbor Light Insurance, May River Disposal, Air Handlers AC, Craft Restorations, Wingmen MC Beaufort County, Coastal Real Estate Company, Big D’s Royal Tees, and FHH Plumbing.

The benefit, Believers For Blake was held at Belle’s Bar and Grill on Platt Springs Road in West Columbia, SC. Blake Rice, Jr. is the grandson of Belle’s Bar and Grill owner Melissa Harris. Belle’s, named after Melissa Harris’s granddaughter, Isabell, is a popular watering hole for many bikers in the area. Blake is three years old and suffers from Medulloblastoma Cancer. He has started radiation treatments, which he will undergo for six weeks. Chemo treatments will follow and will continue for forty weeks. So far, Blake has undergone three open brain surgeries. To date, his medical expenses exceed $200,000. Due to the usual red tape and mounds of paperwork, the family is receiving no financial help from the state. 6th Annual Knobbies Ride The Blue Ridge By: Wally Wersching On Friday, September 18th to Sunday the 21st, the Knob Mountain Motorcycle Chapter held their 6th Annual Ride The Blue Ridge rally at the Catawba Meadows Park in Morganton, NC. The “Knobbies” are a group of over 200 motorcycle enthusiasts who meet every Sunday morning about 8am at the Timberwood Restaurant in Morganton, and then go for a daylong ride. They were originally a BMW Motorcycle Owners Club, but now they welcome all kinds of bikes to their rides. They are a friendly, and warm group of individuals. Six years ago, they started holding the Ride The Blue Ridge event, and it was a hit with bikers – both local, and not so local. Bikers came from all over the east coast, and Canada. The club members were amazed by the turnout. Every year they improve on last year’s event. This year, they had guided “Ride along with the Knobbies” rides to encompass all kinds of riding from off-roading to leisurely cruising down the back roads. One of the more challenging rides was “The Dark Hollow Tour”. It’s only 160 miles, but it travels on some of the most interesting back roads in North Carolina. I talked with Danny, one of the Knobbies. He said that it went on roads that he

never knew existed. It took him over six hours to ride. It starts and ends at the Catawba Meadows Park, and travels as far away as Little Switzerland and Micaville. The Catawba Meadows Park is an excellent facility in Morganton, NC, which keeps getting better every year, too. They were building a new large playground that will have many kids enjoying themselves for years to come. The city of Morganton is also one of the sponsors of the event. I decided to ride up to visit them on Friday morning. I got there at about 8:15am, and a few bikes were already lined up to go for their “Ride Along With The Knobbies.” The local US Marine group was serving breakfast in one of the shelters, and the smell of coffee, pancakes, and bacon filled the air. I had eaten before I left home, but that food smelled almost too good to resist and the price was right – only $6.00. Many of the participants camped at the park overnight so they could be ready to hit the road (or dirt for the off-roading ride) early. I walked around, and talked with many of the Knobbies along with some of the rally goers. They were all ready to have a great day of riding the back roads of North Carolina and Tennessee. This year they even had a “Whiskey On Beer – Have No Fear Run”. A van took a group from the event to visit the Blue Ridge Distilleries in Golden Valley, NC, Catawba Brewery, Fonta Flora Brewery, and Brown Mountain Bottle Works. It was good that they would be in a van rather than on their bikes. The free tasting samples can add up. The backroads group left first. They all had smiles on their faces in expectation of the enjoyable ride. It was a dry sunny day, and they knew they were going on an enjoyable ride. For more info, visit: www.knobbies.org

The 31st Annual Motorcycle Riders Foundation Meeting Of The Minds By: Charlie Boone The 31st Annual Motorcycle Riders Foundation Meeting Of The Minds ran from Sept. 24-27 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There were 35 states represented by their motorcyclist rights organizations (MRO’S). For those that are not familiar with the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, they do on the federal level what groups like CBA/ABATE do at the state level. This is extremely important to all states, for if the MRF does not succeed in stopping harmful legislation at the national level, there would be no point in state MRO’s. This conference allows for an important exchange of information between states, as we all have the same battles to fight. Many states are still working on issues that we have already completed such as motorcycle only checkpoints, dead red signal lights, and increased penalties for right of way violations. Many individuals and MRO’s were recognized for their efforts and successes over the past year. The conference also is a time where donations are given and fundraisers are done to keep the MRF afloat for yet another year. Washington, D.C. is a very expensive place to do business, but the Motorcycle Riders Foundation must be where the politicians are. The breakout sessions were diverse so that individuals could find something that they were interested in learning about. The legislative action plan for the next year was voted upon by the leadership of the attending SMRO’s. “How to plan and survive a D.C. lobbying trip” was of interest to me. Another dealt with how political action committees (PAC) work. We were treated to a seminar by Slider Gilmore on “What Successful People Do” which promotes positive actions and thoughts. “Your Rights at a Traffic Stop” and “What’s Happening in Rider Education”, “What Do You See When You Ride” and “Keys to a Successful Lobby Day” were other interesting topics. These were only about half of the topics presented. There were also safety demos in the parking lot, 50/50 raffles, the Bibs vs. Kilts tug of war, and lots of good food and libations in the hospitality suite. Much of the interaction between attendees is done in the hospitality suite. This is where you can talk with anyone on what you picked up of interest during the day. It is a very important part of the conference. If you are interested in learning more about the MRF, go to www.MRF.org. If you like, you can join on line. Thanks to the 22 NC CBA/ABATE members who took the time to go to this conference. We all came back better edu-
cated on how to achieve our goals on both the state and federal levels. I can hardly wait until the conference in Oklahoma City next year. Hope to see you there!

By: Crystal Turner September 16th was the start of the 2015 Bike Rally at Outer Banks HarleyDavidson. Bikes from all over started rolling in Wednesday and as the weekend approached there were many more arriving in groups of 12 to 20. It was a great weekend for it. The weather was hot and the traffic was not the usual heavy cage traffic in the summer. The main venue was at Outer Banks Harley-Davidson in Harbinger, just over the bridge from the beach. There were many vendors and the Eagles Foundation was there with Eagles and owls. There was a very small owl named Popcorn. You could hold an Eagle for a small donation of $10. It was very hot on Saturday, so people were rolling in and out. They would stop, look around at the vendors, listen to the music of The Electric Mayhem Blues Band, and of course go inside and pick up their favorite Harley T-Shirt. There were rides and music every day e Th

and an Official Party each evening. Friday there was a bike show at the dealership and Saturday a poker run left out of the Nags Head H-D location. Due to some kind of scheduling conflict, Tommy Flanagan had to cancel his appearance, again! The Currituck SPCA was there also and all of their dogs were adopted out. I was happy about that. I guess they are not a “no kill” shelter, which was disturbing to me. So if you are looking for a beautiful dog please call the Currituck Animal Shelter. Also there is the Sherriff Susan Currituck toy run and poker run Saturday, November 7th (rain date Nov. 14) registration 9am-10:30 at Currituck County Welcome Center Hwy 168 at the NC/ VA state line in Moyock. Toy run $10 per rider plus a toy. Poker run $10 per entry. Also the 14th Annual Outer Banks Bike Week is April 16-24, 2016, so plan on coming to the beautiful Outer Banks.

Stars & Bars Tavern End Of Summer Bash
STARS & BARS TAVERN BIKER OWNED & OPERATED
LIVE MUSIC
By: Charles Holcombe, AKA Uwharrie Charlie This growing annual event in Salisbury, NC is very popular with the biker community, and some locals. How could you not attend this event? Although rainy, it wasn’t cold! This includes a swap meet with free set-up areas, DJ Dougie Fresh, and bands all weekend! To name a few, Made Of Monuments band played Friday night, and The Time Band played Saturday night. Taters’ Massage Chair was slated along with Legg’s Leather Sewing and Bandannas, and Lisa’s Famous Pork Chop Sammiches! Oh, free camping, too, horseshoe pits, fire pit, and corn hole tournaments. Saturday around noon the Todd Jones Benefit Ride stopped in for refreshments along their journey to select bars in the neighborhood. With so much going on you’d think this would be confusing but I promise you it is not. It’s a relaxing and fun way to spend your weekend! I often get or see where folk are telling such good stories about this event and others that happen at Stars & Bars Tavern for a reason, this is a happening place, nuff said! I’m so looking forward to the rest of this year’s and next year’s events here. The big attraction was the Wet T-shirt Contest that had at least eight entries! Why do I go to bed before 11 o clock? There are other taverns in the area but why would you spend your time there when the businesses that advertise with The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine are having all the fun? That’s how it works. If you had apples to sell and told no one, how many apples would you sell? Thanks to Lynn Burris, April and Mary and staff there (oh & Tim) for your continued efforts on these events. They are well worth it! Don’t forget every Sunday is “Bike Day” with $1 hotdogs and beer for members. Membership is only five bucks! There are pool tournaments every Tuesday with free pool every Sunday. Don’t miss Stars & Bars beer and drink specials. If you need to stay for the weekend, free camping with showers is available. Y’all come on out and party at Stars & Bars Tavern 723 Klumac Road in Salisbury, NC one block west of I-85 Exit 74 (Jake Alexander Boulevard)! They are biker owned and biker operated. Pix from this event are available online at FullThrottleMagazine.com/Event-Pictures. 11th Annual Ray Price Capitol City Bikefest and Motorsports Expo
By: Mark Infield The Ray Price Capitol City Bike Fest has become the biggest free event in the Carolinas or maybe even the east coast. However, the weather is not something that can be managed. On the weekend of September 26 - 27 rain dominated the forecast and decimated the attendance this year. The opening ceremony took place in the Plaza at the end of Fayetteville Street. The Wake & District Pipe Band escorted the motorcade and a few motorcyclists down Fayetteville Street in the pouring rain. The Colors were presented, Taps was played, a prayer was offered, and Nancy McFarlane, Mayor of Raleigh, recognized Ray Price for his leadership and his vision for the revitalization of the downtown. Yes, it rained, however all was not lost. With the inception of the Ray Price Motorsports Expo in the Convention Center last year, there were still plenty of interesting things to see and do inside. I am sure that the weather affected the attendance there, too, but there was still a good crowd that came out to enjoy a great event. There were also vendors at the dealership and a shuttle that provided dry transportation between the two venues. Unlike years past, there was plenty of bike parking both at the Convention Center and on Fayetteville Street. Only a few brave souls were out on Fayetteville Street in the steady rain.
Inside the Convention Center, the first thing you saw was a view of the whole floor from the landing at the top of the escalator. It was a colorful and inviting glimpse of what was in store once you got down there. There were manufacturers, tattoo artists, stunt show performers, a live bike build, music, a sound competition, a fashion show, pin up contest, custom cars, and MOTORCYCLES! This was billed as an Invitation Only bagger and custom class bike show sponsored by Misfit Industries that paid $4,000 to the winner. The entries were stunning. There were also 13 other classes that were open to the public, which attracted many diverse and interesting entries. The winners in the Invited Bagger Class are: 1st Place - Joey Hensley Backyard Baggers, 2nd Place - Tyler Foster Sik Pipes, 3rd Place - Rankin Creek Custom. The Invited Custom Class winners are: 1st Place - Wade Beavers Rufus Wade Builders, 2nd Place - Judd York Flatt Broke Customs, 3rd Place - Pat Tozzi Green Devil Garage. Sunday started with Freedom Biker Church on the Expo Stage and a variety of competitions and awards up to the unclaimed lucky number prize board giveaways at 4:30. The 11th Annual Ray Price Capitol City Bikefest and Motorsports Expo was a phenomenal family friendly event and there is no charge to attend. It is not often that you find events of this caliber that are free. Ray Price and his staff went out of their way to make this show outstanding. While CapitolCityBikeFest.com states that it is too early to post times and events for the 2016 Ray Price Capitol City Bikefest and Motorsports Expo, you can expect it to be bigger and better than this year. Watch The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Cruisin’ Calendar and the Ray Price Harley-Davidson/ Triumph ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for the dates.

By: Mark Carlyle Over 200 people attended the “Rockin’ for a Cure” fundraiser on August 22, 2015 in support of Molly Jackson, who has MPS I (Hurler Syndrome). Hurler Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder where the body is missing an enzyme that breaks down large molecules called glycosaminoglycans (GAG). As GAG molecules build up in the body, the following signs and symptoms begin to appear: Decline of mental functioning; Loss of physical skills; Heart problems, including changes in the valves; Hearing problems and frequent ear infections; Large head size, broad forehead, 2:17 PM and heavy eyebrows; Deformed bones and stiff joints, especially the spine, hips, knees, wrists, and fingers; Short size; and Breathing problems. If not treated, death frequently occurs before age 10. For more information visit www.mpssociety.org. Molly’s grandparents, Debi Jackson and Glen Palmer, along with Jimmy and Sissy Hendrickson, owners of Westside Tavern where the event took place, organized the event. Many local businesses, family members, and friends came together for the second time to raise funds for Molly and her family, with more than twenty percent of the proceeds donated to the MPS Society. The family-friendly event included performances from local band Olde #7, who donated their time and talent, as well as corn hole and pool tournaments, BBQ and other delicious foods, a silent auction, prize raffles, and lots of fun for all. Funds were collected through sales of food, t-shirts, wristbands, raffle tickets, and auction items, as well as donations called in by those who could not attend. Molly’s family is grateful for everyone who contributed to the planning and management of the event, as well as those who donated food, raffle prizes, items for the silent auction, and their time along, with all those who attended the event.

Gidgit Gifford Benefit By: Jeanie Hood Carter In August, Gidgit Gifford, a local and lifetime lady biker in the Fayetteville, NC area, posted on Facebook she had gone down and needed help. A few days later one of her best friends, Cynthia Walton, contacted BFBF for assistance since Gidgit suffered broken bones, many bruises, and would be off work several months. On September 19th, it was game on! Being an emergency benefit, BFBF had to have a last minute venue. Pam, owner of Louie’s Sports Bar & Tiki Bar in Fayetteville was gracious enough to provide the perfect venue for the event. Great place! Approximately 45 bikes and over 50 riders made the run. Stops were Speed Demons/M&M Leather, Drifters Saloon in Spring Lake, and Redneck Yacht Club. Once the riders returned to Louie’s there was a food vendor with some of the best Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches ever. You know everyone is starving after a run! Just before the riders returned, Tonya, Gidgit’s other best friend rode Gidgit’s repaired and newly painted bike into the back Tiki Bar. Ted from Hog Country Bike Shop had repaired Gidgit’s bike pro bono and Terry had painted it for free as well! When Gidgit saw the bike, I don’t think she realized at first it was hers. The guys had changed the color to her original bike’s color from back in the day. There were tears, and not just from Gidgit. I have to say, Ted is one crazy guy, but he knows how to take care of a bike and a friend. Once all the paperwork was tallied up, and winners announced, “Shamoo” donated his winnings to Gidgit. More people were coming in as the next events started. Then, the raffle and auction was on! Ted, from Hog Country Bike Shop, did the auction for BFBF. He is a quite the character and added a lot of color to the event. The Confederate vests and Mystery Box from “ Shamoo” were the high money items of the day. Enough money was raised to carry Gidgit for a few months
plus her bike was repaired and painted. She thanked everyone, stated it was one of the best days of her life, and that no one had ever done anything like this for her before! And that, my friends, is what it’s all about! BFBF would like to thank Ted and HOG Country, Terry, who painted the bike, Pam Griffin and Louie’s and the staff, M&M Leather, Hot Hog Leather, “Shamoo,” Elite Tattoos, Skin Prik City Tattoos, Vince Sittnick and VBS Photography, Chi Force Photography, and all who supported, and the BFBF members who worked the event. www.BikersForBikersFoundation.com

All Wet In Greensboro
By: Rick Gammons The weekend of September 27th and 28th was cool and rainy, a hot soup kind of weekend. The guys at Indian of Greensboro scheduled a demo weekend weeks in advance and, as you know, there is little you can do about the weather. So, as planned, the Indian motorcycle demo truck was there. The sales team and the assistants were there. The mechanics were also there. But again, so was the rain. There were going to be no demo rides for this weekend. Even so, there were customers who came out. Now, the showroom wasn’t overflowing, but a steady stream of people did come in. Monty Hendrix, the owner, told me that he still sold two motorcycles because of the Indian demo weekend and did pretty well on accessory sales. This is a bit low for Indian of Greensboro, which usually sells eight to twelve motorcycles during one of these riding events. Anyway, there are several bikes in the showroom over at Indian of Greensboro, 201 South Church Street. Go on over
and check out the entire line of fine motorcycles or maybe take a demo ride. Don’t forget that Indian of Greensboro has taken in some good motorcycles as trade ins. Better get over there! Motorcycles do not last long over there.

Ride To Remember
By: Leger Meyland The bikes began arriving early – before sunrise – for the third annual edition of the Ride To Remember Alzheimer’s benefit on September 19th. As the sun rose and the temperatures warmed, more and more bikes arrived at Summerfield’s Baptist Church, the event’s host site. All types of bikes; Hondas, Triumphs, Kawasakis, Suzukis, Harleys, and BMWs pulled into the parking lot and took their place in line. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Motor Patrol arrived and took their spot at the front of the procession. If you’ve ever been on a ride they escorted, then you know these guys are riders with special skills and big brass ones. While folks waited for the KSU signal they drank coffee, munched on goodies, visited, and checked out silent auction items. The sun rose higher and the day got more spectacular as the departure time neared. When the horn signaled “saddle up” more than 100 bikes snaked out across the parking lot. Unlike many benefit rides spent hopping bars and such, the organizers planned a 90-mile route through rural Guilford and Rockingham Counties over, along and around the Dan River. This was a ride like any biker might take along beautiful back roads to unwind from a long week at work. As the ride passed through rural communities like Bethel, Oregon Hill, and Ruffin, folks in cars, folks working in their yards, farmers in fields, just about

Poker Run for Paul Capra everyone along the route, waved to the long line of riders. For the spectators it was a “would you look at that” moment. After all, it’s not everyday that country folk get see or hear that many bikes rumble by. Thankfully, when the riders pulled back into the church’s parking lot everyone was safe and ready for a good BBQ lunch. What made this ride a success? Lots of hard work by the organizers, Charlotte Stoll and family, lots of support by businesses and individuals, the sheriff’s motor patrol unit, Summerfield Baptist Church, and the participation of many, many bikers. As benefit rides go, this one rated a “10.” When all was counted and done, close to $12,000 was raised for the Western Conference (49 counties) of the Alzheimer’s Association. Next year, organizers plan to raise even more money and provide an equally fun event. Put September 17, 2016, on your calendar or refrigerator for the fourth edition of the Ride To Remember. AMRA Jim McClure Memorial Nitro Nationals At The Rock
Story and photo by Alan Dockery Wow! What a great weekend we had at Rockingham Dragway when the American Motorcycle Racing Association came to North Carolina to close out their 30th Anniversary year. This was the 24th Annual Harley Drags at The Rock and 22 years that I’ve been going to the race now honoring the legendary Jim McClure. Yeah, it was chilly, but cold dry air makes the bikes go even quicker and faster. Records were potentially falling like oak leaves as racers posted their personal best times and beat on the track and national marks. I am not sure yet how many records were backed up, but I know fans saw some awesome passes down the quarter mile strip. To back up a record, a racer has to make another pass within 1% of the record pass during the same weekend. Rockingham is known for records. Saturday qualifying went from noon until just as the sun went down. It’s so cool to watch the nitro bikes roar down the track spewing flames in the fading light. After qualifying, Bert Baker, of Baker Drivetrain, and Racer Rick sponsored Halloween Costume and Pit Decorating Contests. What a hoot to see folks who are so serious on the strip cutting up in costume as they paraded through the pits. The cold kept folks huddled closer to camp, while several made it over to the band. I don’t think I ever got the name of the band, but they were good while I was there. I know we have called this “The Harley Drags” for many years, but it is the American Motorcycle Racing Association and there were Victory and Indian motorcycles on the track, too. Next year I hope to see more of y’all other American brand riders at The Rock. There was an Indian in the Winner’s Circle Sunday. Grimes Runs 6.157 And 231.60 MPH! Tommy Grimes, Winston-Salem, NC, posted record smashing numbers on the way to qualifying the Ray Price Motorsports machine number one in the Top Fuel field for the fifth year. After qualifying, he had Low Elapsed Time and Top Speed with 6.157 second and 231.60 mph passes. Jay Turner, Julian, NC, qualified third and Tii Tharpe, East Bend, NC was fifth. Turner is always a good bet to win especially since he had taken the International Hot Rod Association Nitro Jam title for the fourth time the weekend before.
In the Top Fuel final round Grimes and Turner roared down the strip for a close race with Grimes getting the win by 28 thousandths of a second. In Nitro Funny Bike Jay Beasley, Winston-Salem, NC, qualified the second Bobby Hoover Racing bike third in class. Sam White, Columbia, SC and Keith Browne, Semora, NC, also competed in Funny Bike. Yeah, Browne was riding the latest big-engine, turbocharged, gas-fueled machine those guys are famous for in a nitro class. It’s that quick and fast, capable of getting in the sixes at 200 mph. Pro Fuel may be the small-engine, carbureted nitro class, but the fans love them. Johnny Vickers, Miller’s Creek, NC, was in the field with his latest awesome race machine. Janette Thornley, Statesville, NC; Tyler Wilson, Walnut Cove, NC and Jay Beasley made the field. This year I expected the final round to come down to local hero, Johnny, and long-time Pro Fuel racer with his own new engine, Kirby Apathy, Deland, FL. They lined up for the final round and Kirby broke in the water box. Johnny made a single 7.253 second pass at 165.29 mph showing us what his bikes can do. During the weekend he went as quick as a new record 7.185. Keith Richner, Moore, SC, ran in Pro Gas showing us just how quick that good looking race bike is, 8.764 and 146.21. Mike Motto, Jacksonville, NC, competed in the 12-bike Outlaw Street class. I was glad to see lots of those bikes on the strip. They put on a great show. Richner ran in Super Comp, the quickest index class where racers try to run as close to 8.90 seconds as possible. Freddy Frazier, Sanford, NC, was on the numbers all day and won Super Comp. Joe’s First Win The Super Gas class runs against a 9.90 index and had 21 teams working to get their riders in the 16-bike field. Greg Best, Raleigh, NC; Chris Wood, Goldsboro, NC, and David Minton, Trinity, NC, made the field. I hope y’all checked out the cool old military themed Shovelhead Erik Harley, York, SC, raced at The Rock even if he didn’t make the field. The Super Gas racer who had Carolina fans cheering was

Joe Peterson, Wilmington, NC. Joe qualified second then on Sunday sent everyone else to the trailer as he raced to the class win. This was Joe’s first national event win. While waiting for Winner’s Circle photos he was about a hyper as a third grader jacked up on Sundrop. Congrats Joe. Rick Medford, Cherokee, NC, made the 16-bike 10.30 index Super Pro field. Pro Eliminator is the 10.90 class and had Steve Brumfield, Stantonsburg, NC; Don Meeher, Goldsboro, NC, and Glen Sutton, Moore, SC, in competition. Street Eliminator runs on an 11.50 index and had Greg Best, Rick Medford and Don Meeher in the class. Travis Ellis, Summerville, SC, missed the field by going just a tick too quick. Christopher Wyckoff, Columbia, SC, took his little red Indian Scout to the Winner’s Circle for the Open Street class. Chris Wood had us cheering as he worked through the Dial-In Eliminator class. In a real close race Chris came in second to
Bill Rowe, Jr., Hellertown, PA. The Eliminator class number one qualifier and winner of the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine $150 bonus was Donnie Huffman, Lakeland, FL, with a .012 second reaction time. As the sun set and the Winner’s Circle photos wound down, another season of drag racing was over. It was great to see friends I’ve known for more than 25 years and make new ones who were at The Rock for the first time. Visit www.AMRAonLine.com for the latest confirmed records and see how your favorite racer finished in the championship points. As always you can enjoy and download our extra photos at www. Kimberli Rothwell Doby, 46, of China Grove, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2015 at her residence with family by her side. Kimberli was born August 9, 1969 in Queens, NY, to the late William Henry Hartkopf and Wilma Schulenberg Hartkopf. She was of the Lutheran faith and graduated from Queens College in 1996 and then from Salem College with her Masters degree. Kimberli worked for the Rowan County School System for 12 years and was always helping her students with whatever she could. She was a member of the NC Patriot Guard Riders and took part in as many missions as possible. Kimberli enjoyed going on cruises, swimming in her pool, riding her Harley-Davidson, and more than anything, she loved spending time with her family and her two dogs. She is survived by her husband of 7-1/2 years, Terry L. Doby of China Grove; a son, Michael Rothwell and girlfriend Cathy Dalton of Garner; a daughter, Samantha Rothwell Jebb and husband, Travor Jebb of Garner, an uncle, William von Borstel; and nieces and nephews Joey Palma and wife Mary Palma, Mike Palma ad girlfriend Melissa Thomas, Sabina von Borstel and Torsten von Borstel. A Celebration of Life was held Thursday September 17 at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Go Jen Go Foundation at GoJenGo.org or by mail at 7804 Fairview Road, Suite 217 Charlotte, NC 28226. My heart is broken for the loss of Kimberli and we offer our sincere condolences to Terry and her family. I, too, will miss her smiling face. I remember when she helped us in the early days of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. She would come by the house after she got off work on her motorcycle and she was always so upbeat and positive. The world, and our biker community has lost a sweetheart. ~ Molly Infield

The AMCA Legends Chapter By: Wally Wersching The Antique Motorcycle Club of America (AMCA) was formed in 1954, and now has over 11,000 members in the USA, Canada, and Europe. The AMCA’s goal is to restore, preserve, and operate motorcycles that are at least 35 years old. To be a member, it is not a requirement that you own an antique bike (or any bike for that matter) – just have the enthusiasm for, and love of old bikes. On the AMCA website www. antiquemotorcycle.org, there are over 60 chapters listed, and the number is constantly growing. Now there’s one more – the Legends Chapter in Upstate South Carolina. I attended the first meeting of the Legends Chapter on Saturday, September 19th at the Peach Blossom Diner in Spartanburg. There are many noteworthy people in the chapter including the American Motorcycle Association Hall of Famer - Pete Hill. Pete and his wife Jackie (his crew chief) raced Knucklehead Harley motorcycles from 1948 to 1994. He ran in the Top-Fuel class for many years, and won many titles. He really is a Legend! Another interesting person in the chapter is Dennis Harris who owns Chesnee Classic Cycle in Chesnee, SC. He is the man responsible for the Antique Bikes on Main every July. He’s been talking about starting an AMCA chapter in the Upstate for years. I’m sure that he was involved with the forming of the Legends Chapter. The chapter will be involved with fu-

ture Antique Bikes on Main events. The club already has a logo. They got permission to use the likeness of Burt Monro on the chapter logo. Burt is a real motorcycle legend. A movie was made about his exploits at the Bonneville Salt Flats called “The World’s Fastest Indian”. It’s a great movie – not just a “biker movie”. I got the DVD for Father’s Day, and have enjoyed it many times. All the papers to incorporate the chapter have already been filed with Bud Blair as the president. He seems very dedicated to the AMCA, and its goals. Meeting everyone on Saturday was a lot of fun. They all rode in on their old bikes. I love to hear the old engines, and their special sounds. I was surprised to see a few ladies ride in on vintage bikes. Some people met for the first time, and were talking like old friends in minutes. There’s something about old motorcycles that brings people together – no matter which brand of motorcycle they ride. If you want to get involved in the Legends Chapter, contact Bud at legendschapter@outlook.com. Come and join the fun!

Justice For Pete Hicks Ride
By: Kathy Johnson Fifteen Years ago Pete Hicks was killed, MURDERED while riding his bike home. It happened June 17, 2000 on Munn Road in Granville County. Someone or a few people thought it would be fun to cut a tree down so it would fall across the road. Pete hit the tree and was thrown from his bike and was killed. Pete’s wife, Denise, was waiting for him to get home, only to learn later of this senseless tragedy. I am not sure how many people could go 15 years without any closure on who killed the person they loved. I am also very aware that after 15 years I thought Denise and her family would have answers to who killed Pete. For the last 15 years Denise Hicks has put on a Justice For Pete Hicks Ride. Keeping it in the public eye and not letting the person or persons involved in Pete’s death think they can go on with out being reminded about what they did that night. There is no charge for this ride. It is not a poker run. There is one destination and it is to the site where Pete was killed on Munn road. We gather there at the cross and memorial put up for Pete and stand together in hopes that, one year, Denise will be able to tell us there was Justice For Pete Hicks. This year it was raining like crazy and everyone was ready and glad to be there for Denise and her daughter. The ride started from the old Biker’s Boulevard location on Glenwood Avenue is where Pete worked when he was killed. There was a
police escort to the memorial sight and most cars were respectful of the riders, but then there are always a few that are not. After a while everyone arrived on Munn Road. Everyone got off their rides and took a moment to reflect and then everyone road on to Denise’s house for a get together. One year I hope to be able to do a story that justice was served. It has been too long. if you have any information about the night Pete Hicks was killed call 1-866-439-2683

Biker Blues & BBQ Rally By: WildThing Once again, Tilley Harley-Davidson in Salisbury was the host for a Kansas City Barbeque Society grilling competition in conjunction with Old North State Barbeque Series. The whole back lot at Tilley’s was filled up with competitors’ rigs and cookers. The Cooking Teams and other vendors set up on Friday morning to kick off the event. The event opened to the public by 9 am and there was music provided by local favorite DJ Fast Freddie all day. There was a special appearance by Sponge Bob! And you could have your picture taken with him. Krispy Kreme sponsored a donut-eating contest and there were entertainers, Michelle Leigh and Darrell Harwood, on the main stage in the evening. Tilley’s provided a trolley shuttle from the off-site parking lots to the dealership Friday and Saturday. Saturday was the big day! The participants in the Charity Poker Run Sponsored by The Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group were registering starting at 9 am and there were about 30 bikes to go on the police escorted ride with Derek Tilley, son of the late Don Tilley. The proceeds from this poker run went to support the Salisbury VA Hospice Unit. By the time we arrived, the ride had left and the lot at Tilley’s was jammed with motorcycles and the trolley was shuttling in more folks. One of the draws, besides the music, vendors, and tons of Harley stuff, was the People’s Choice BBQ Competition. The ‘Que’ing Competitors’ were asked to contribute a portion of their BBQ and for a donation of $10 regular folks could sample them. This was over at 2:30, so you had to be there early to try some and pick your favorite. There were about 40 cooking teams in the competition and they produced the same number of different flavors of BBQ – I know, ‘cause I got to sample several. It amazed me that each sample was so different from the next – but all were delicious. I would hate to be a KCBS Judge! At 2 in the afternoon Rockie Lynne, the country music sensation from Statesville, NC took the stage and belted out some
real toe-tapping tunes for the next hour and a half. That wasn’t really enough for some folks, but at 3:30 it was time for Gary Moss, the Biker Blues & BBQ Rally Coordinator, to get on the stage and start the ceremonies. Gary welcomed everyone and announced the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard who presented the colors and Rockie Lynne sang the National Anthem a cappella. The Veterans Guard performed the gun salute and played Taps. Next, Gary introduced Derek Tilley, the event host, and NASCAR racing legend Donnie Allison, celebrity guest, and rattled off the impressive list of event sponsors. Rockie Lynne was given center stage again the champion his cause, Tribute To The Troops, and invite folks to ride in the fundraiser on October 10. His group raises money to help the children of our fallen service members with educational grants. There were some raffle prizes given away and then Liz and Wendy, representing the Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group, announced the winners of the Poker Run: Melvin won best hand and received a $250 gift card to Tilley’s, and our own Grant Eagle had the worst hand that netted him a $100 gift card. Then they presented a check for $700 to the Salisbury VA Hospice Unit. Next on the agenda, the moment all the cooking teams were waiting for, the winner of the People’s Choice and the various categories of meat grilling. There was like eighteen levels of Honorable Mention, and a boatload of trophies. There was a lot of cheering and backslapping as the winners received their prizes. This was the fifth time Tilley’s Harley-Davidson in Salisbury hosted this event and it has gotten bigger every year. It is really a treat to get to sample all the types of BBQ prepared by some real experts and enjoy the festival atmosphere at Tilley’s. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is proud to be a sponsor of this event.

PGR Mission For Ronald M. Gardner By: Wally Wersching The Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) is a group of volunteers dedicated to the honorable burial of fallen heroes of the military, law enforcement, and emergency responders. They are there to show that this country still remembers even after many years. A PGR Mission is to attend the memorial as invited guests of the family, and respectfully honor the fallen hero during the funeral service, and burial (some with full military honors). Ronald M. Gardner was such a hero. He had been a Sergeant in the US Army, and died on September 23rd, 2015 at the age of 67. On October 7th, it was a two-part memorial. The first part was a service at the Thos. Shepherd’s Church Street Chapel in Hendersonville after which, the PGR would escort the family to the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC, where Mr. Gardner would be buried with full military honors. The Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery is one of five in North Carolina. There is at least one in every state along with some of the US territories. These cemeteries are dedicated to US veterans, and their spouses. To be eligible to be buried in one of them, proof of service with an honorable discharge along with proof of address in that specific state or territory are the only requirements. I couldn’t make it to the Hendersonville part of the memorial so I rode directly to the Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery. I arrived at the cemetery at about 1:15, and parked alongside the few bikes that were already there. The escorted group from Hendersonville would arrive in a few minutes. Meanwhile, I got acquainted with some old friends I had met at previous PGR missions. There are a few members who are at all the local missions. After a few minutes, the escorted group from Hendersonville arrived. I took a few pictures as they rode through the cemetery displaying the large flags on their bikes. We formed a flag-line for the arrival of the family. They were escorted into the small chapel in the main building overlooking the cemetery. We all saluted when the bronze box containing Mr. Gardner’s ashes was carried to the chapel. The ceremony was held in the chapel with the honor guard standing outside next to the flagpoles. Then the honor guard fired three rifle volleys. The “three volleys” comes from an old battlefield custom. The two warring sides would cease hostilities to clear their dead from the battlefield, and the firing of three volleys meant that the dead
had been properly cared for, and the side was ready to resume the battle. The flag detail often slips three shell-casings into the folded flag before presenting the flag to the family. Each casing represents one volley. Then one soldier in the honor guard played “Taps” which has been standard at military funeral ceremonies since 1891. I found this quote on the Internet, and I couldn’t improve on its description. “There is something singularly beautiful and appropriate in the music of this wonderful call. Its strains are melancholy, yet full of rest and peace. Its echoes linger in the heart long after its tones have ceased to vibrate in the air.” I always get a lump in my throat, and a tear in my eye when I hear a bugle play “Taps”. Then we re-formed the flag line to the sidewalk overlooking the cemetery. We saw a caretaker take the bronze box of Mr. Gardner’s ashes to the gravesite, and bury it. Afterwards, as we walked back to the bikes, family members shook our hands, and thanked us for being there for Mr. Gardner. We were honored to be there for him. After we walked back to the bikes and talked, I learned that one of the PGR riders was on active duty in the US Navy. He was being transferred from Europe to Pensacola, Florida, and made the effort to honor a fallen hero while he was on travel leave. As we talked, I learned that the Navy of today is nothing like the Navy back in the 1960’s when I was in. I guess that everything changes with the times. I rode home, and enjoyed every minute. It was a great way to spend a retirement afternoon!

By: Charles Holcombe AKA Uwharrie Charlie This event is one great weekend held in the upper event field next to the campground at Tamarac Marina & Grill every year. The turnout was better this year than last year partly due to the return of the band and the date was changed from the first weekend in October to the third weekend in September. It was picture perfect weather and loads folks from near and far enjoyed the fellowship. The weekend is designed to be a stress free (nobody does a lot of work) event with as little responsibility as possible. The $10 donation to attend all weekend includes primitive camping and usually the band and bike games. Some people go down to the After Dock for karaoke when it gets late and they usually stay open till the crowd leaves! The bonfire wood is usually donated so folk traveling via bike don’t have to carry any or try chopping their own when they arrive, hence “stress free weekend”! Part of the bike games and that Dam Ride was postponed this year due to a beloved local, Todd Jones, who had passed on to the last ride. Some rode to the memorial service that was from two till three pm. I don’t recall the tally of bikes and folks that attended but everyone I saw
was having a blast! We may have to change the name of the event to the Crock Pot Challenge next year due to so many providing some great dishes for their friends, brothers and sisters. The campers here at Tamarac Campground were somewhat more lenient this year because they have had six months warning to prepare for the crowd. Although some of us were up till after three am, I haven’t heard one complaint, yet! They also now know that the funds raised at this event goes to the State CBA for Motorcycle Safety and Awareness through various avenues. The Rock-U-Charlotte band did an awesome job and played till the drummer broke his last drumstick but at least the cops didn’t show up and shut them down like last year! Mark your calendar for this event next year. Children under age 16 are allowed, but must be accompanied by an adult, so what’s your excuse for not coming next year? Check out some of the pix on the events page of our website FullThrottleMagazine.com. Thanks and hope to see you here next year! NHRA Carolina Nationals At zMAX Dragway Story and photo by Alan Dockery The National Hot Rod Association made a second stop at zMAX Dragway in Concord, NC in September to run the Carolina Nationals. As usual, lots of Pro Stock Motorcycles were there running hard to make the 16-bike field. I was glad to see our readers and long-time motorcycle drag race fans at the finest dragstrip in the country. Four racers represented the Carolinas. Matt and Angie Smith from King, NC, raced the Victory Gunner bikes and are real popular with the fans. Shawn Gann, Stoneville, NC, was on the Clonex sponsored Buell. Andrew Patterson, Taylors, SC, was riding a Star Racing Suzuki for his first time in NHRA competition. The other stars of Pro Stock Motorcycle were there hanging out with fans and putting on a great show. This is the first season for Victory Motorcycles in NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle and they seem to be loving it. They had a nice hospitality area for Victory owners including one of the race bikes you could take your photo on with a couple of my favorite pretty professional women models. “Our year started out good with a number one qualifier,” Matt Smith said. “We hurt our good motor and struggled a little bit through the year. Since Chicago, we’ve been running better. We qualified fifth four of the last six races. We’ve gone to the finals. Had a couple semi-final finishes. We are looking really good for the end of the year. We are in the countdown for the championship at sixth place. Hopefully we are going to do good the last six races of the year, but next year is what we are excited about. We have some new pieces, new body parts, new stuff that has been approved so we should be better next year.” “Victory is excited about what they’ve done this year,” Matt said. “We’ve grown the market. Taken the Gunner to the next step in advertising. The Gunner is selling great. Thank y’all to the NHRA fans that are buying the bikes. Victory is out here for the exposure they are getting. The fan response has been great and I expect Victory to be here for a while.” Not only do fans get to meet their favorite long-time racers, but they can also see the up-coming stars of Pro Stock Motorcycle. One of those was at zMAX for his first race. Andrew Patterson won the Star Racing Riders Challenge 2015. I asked George Bryce, one of my heroes in the sport, about him. “Twenty five people signed up for Star Racing Riders Challenge 2015”, Bryce said. “It’s similar to the Big Break on the Golf Channel. Racers compete for the chance to ride a Star Racing bike. Winner of the challenge was awarded training for six months and the opportunity to compete on a Star Racing motorcycle at an NHRA National event. Andrew Patterson won the challenge and this is his race.” “He raced street bikes in South Carolina and Georgia. A Pro Stock Motorcycle with a slick and wheelie bar with a sixspeed transmission is a whole different animal. It takes a lot of practice. It’s a little bit unfair to prime him up and throw him
Andrew Hines left North Carolina with the winner’s trophy and leading the national points. in the fire and see how he does but he’s dealing with it. ”Bryce is the guy behind the Buell drag bikes so many teams race and has sold 33 of those packages. When it came to race day, Patterson didn’t qualify, while Angie and Shawn were eliminated in the first round. Matt made it to the final round where he faced defending world champ Andrew Hines on the Harley V-Rod. Hines was first off the line and just a little quicker taking the 40th win of his two-wheel career. “I won here in the spring at the [NHRA] Four Wide [Nationals], and that was my 39th win, and it has taken us all this time go get back and get win number 40,” Hines said. “That tells you how tough it is out here.” “I’m not quite certain why, but zMAX Dragway has been kind to me,” Hines said. “The first three or four times here, I never got past the first round. My Harley V-Rod was running straight and true and putting up big speeds, and it has done it consistently. We’ve had to figure out how to get a win on a tricky track, but everything played out in our favor. We took a chance and changed a bunch of parts on our engine at midseason looking for more power and consistency, and it paid off.” “This was a big day to use my V-Rod to capitalize,” said Hines, a four-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion. “I had a chance to move up and take out some of the other top teams. This Pro Stock Motorcycle class is so tight right now that you need to take advantage of every chance you get.” Hines left North Carolina with the winner’s trophy and leading the national points. A woman takes her 16-year-old daughter to the doctor. The doctor says, “Okay, Mrs. James, what’s the problem?” The mother says, “It’s my daughter Darla. She keeps getting these cravings, she’s putting on weight, and is sick most mornings.” The doctor gives Darla a good examination, then turns to the mother and says, “Well, I don’t know how to tell you this, but your Darla is pregnant – about 4 months, would be my guess.” The mother says, “Pregnant?! She can’t be, she has never ever been left alone with a man. Have you, Darla?” Darla replies, “No mother! I’ve never even kissed a man!” The doctor walked over to the window and just stares out it. About five minutes pass and finally the mother says, “Is there something wrong out there, doctor?” The doctor replies, “No, not really, it’s just that the last time anything like this happened, a star appeared in the east and three wise men came over the hill. I’ll be damned if I’m going to miss it this time!”
it over with his wife. The doctor comes back the next day, “So, have you spoken with your wife?” “Yes I have,” says the man. “And has she helped you make a decision?” “Yes” says the man. “What is your decision?” asks the doctor. “We’re getting granite counter tops.”
A lady about 8 months pregnant got on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her. She immediately moved to another seat. This time the smile turned into a grin, so she moved again. He seemed more amused. When on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, she complained to the driver and he had the man arrested. The case came up in court. The Judge asked the man (about 20 years old) what he had to say for himself. The man replied...”Well your Honor, it was like this: When the lady got on the bus, I couldn’t help but notice her condition. She sat under a sweets sign that said, “The Double Mint Twins are coming” and I grinned. Then she moved and sat under a sign that said “Logan’s Liniment will reduce the swelling”, and I had to smile. Then she placed herself under a deodorant sign that said “William’s Big Stick Did The Trick”, and I could hardly contain myself. But, your Honor, when she moved for the fourth time and sat under the sign that said “Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this Accident” I just lost it!” Judge: “Case dismissed!!”

Smith climbs to the top of Mt. Sinai to get close enough to talk to God. Looking up, he asks the Lord. “God, what does a million years mean to you?” The Lord replies, “A minute.” Smith asks, “And what does a million dollars mean to you?” The Lord replies, “A penny.” Smith asks, “Can I have a penny?” The Lord replies, “In a minute.” A man wakes up in the hospital bandaged from head to foot. The doctor comes in and says, “Ah, I see you’ve regained consciousness. Now, you probably won’t remember, but you were in a huge pile-up on the freeway. You’re going to be okay, you’ll walk again and everything, however, your penis was severed in the accident and we couldn’t find it.” The man groans, but the doctor goes on, “You have $9000 in insurance compensation coming and we now have the technology to build you a new penis. They work great but they don’t come cheap. It’s roughly $1000 an inch.” The man perks up. So, the doctor says, “You must decide how many inches you want. But understand that you have been married for over thirty years and this is something you should discuss with your wife. If you had a five incher before and get a nine incher now she might be a bit put out. If you had a nine incher before and you decide to only invest in a five incher now, she might be disappointed. It’s important that she plays a role in helping you make a decision.” The man agrees to talk
Because I’m a man, when I catch a cold, I need someone to bring me soup and take care of me while I lie in bed and moan. You’re a woman. You never get as sick as I do, so for you, this is no problem.
A rookie police officer pulled a biker over for speeding and had the following exchange: Officer: May I see your driver’s license? Biker: I don’t have one. I had it suspended when I got my fifth DUI. Officer: May I see the registration card for this motorcycle? Biker: It’s not my bike. I stole it. Officer: The motorcycle is stolen? Biker: That’s right. But come to think of it I saw the owner’s card in the tool bag when I was putting my gun in there. Officer: There’s a gun in the tool bag? Biker: Yes sir. That’s where I put it after I shot and killed the dude who owns this bike and stuffed his dope in the saddlebags. Officer: There’s drugs in the saddle bags, too? Biker: Yes sir. Hearing this, the rookie immediately called his captain. The biker was quickly surrounded by police, and the captain approached the biker to handle the tense situation. Captain: Sir, can I see your license? Biker: Sure. Here it is. It was valid. Captain: Whose motorcycle is this? Biker: It’s mine, officer. Here’s the registration. Captain: Could you slowly open your tool bag so I can see if there’s a gun in it? Biker: Yes, sir, but there is no gun in it. Sure enough, there was nothing in the tool bag. Captain: Would you mind opening your saddlebags? I was told you said there’s drugs in them. Biker: No problem. The saddlebags were opened; no drugs. Captain: I don’t understand it. The officer who stopped you said you told him you didn’t have a license, stole this motorcycle, had a gun in the tool bag, and that there were drugs in the saddlebags. Biker: Yeah, I’ll bet he told you I was speeding, too. Motorcycles are better than women because.... Motorcycles don’t whine unless something is really wrong. Motorcycles don’t care about how many other Motorcycles you have ridden.
Why are motorcycle dealers closed on Sundays? Because Sunday is for worship... Catholics go to church, Motorcyclists go to the track. “Two boys in Boston were playing basketball when one of them was attacked by a rabid Rottweiler. Thinking quickly, the other boy ripped board off a nearby fence, wedged it into the dog’s collar and twisted it, breaking the dog’s neck. A newspaper reporter from the Boston Herald witnessed the incident and rushed over to interview the boy. The reporter began entering data into his laptop, beginning with the headline: “Brave Young Celtics Fan Saves Friend From Jaws Of Vicious Animal.” “But I’m not a Celtics fan,” the little hero interjected. “Sorry,” replied the reporter. “But since we’re in Boston I just assumed you were.” Hitting the delete key, the reporter began again: “John Kerry Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Dog Attack.” “But I’m not a Kerry fan either,” the boy responds. The reporter says, “I assumed everybody in this state was either for the Celtics or Kerry or Kennedy. What team or person do you like?” “I’m a Houston Rockets fan and I really like Ted Cruz,” the boy says. Hitting the delete key, the reporter writes: “Arrogant Little Conservative Bastard Kills Beloved Family Pet.”

True Brotherhood We, in the biker community, for the most part, are all brothers and sisters in a family created by the love of motorcycles. Some have formed clubs, some have formed organizations, and others just get together and ride. Many ministries have come out of this family, some are motorcycle ministries, and some are biker ministries. Because there is a difference. In the bible there is a story of a rich man and a beggar. The rich man had everything he wanted, and the beggar sat at the gate of his property hoping for leftovers from table. The difference is the beggar served God and the rich man served himself. Then the beggar died and went to heaven. The rich man also died but woke up in hell. He began asking God to send the beggar with water to cool his tongue. After realizing hell was a real place he asked God to send someone to his brother’s house to warn them of price of sin. This was a true brother. Likewise I have the opportunity to tell my brothers and
sisters of the “motorcycle” family that heaven is a real place, and the only way to get there is through Jesus. It’s OK to have money and possessions as long as they don’t become our focus. So, as I always say, please try Jesus. Then be a true brother and share him with your brothers and sisters. You are always welcome visit His Laboring Few Fellowship at 812 Martin Luther King Drive in Thomasville, NC. Because Jesus would have been a biker. In “HIS” wind Popkorn

Debt Of Honor: Disabled Veterans In American History
August 4, 2015 PBS announced that Debt Of Honor: Disabled Veterans In American History, a new documentary film by six-time Emmy Award-winning director Ric Burns, will premiere nationwide on Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at 9 p.m. (check local listings), as part of PBS’ Stories Of Service. In an effort to share the film with the largest audience possible, including military personnel and veterans and their families, the National Endowment of Humanities is partnering with PBS and Washington, DC, public television station WETA to hold a series of screenings in schools and with other organizations to highlight local stories of disabled veterans. DEBT OF HONOR examines the way in which the American government and society as a whole have regarded disabled veterans throughout history, beginning in the aftermath of the Revolutionary War and continuing through today’s conflicts in the Middle East. The film combines personal stories, told by distinguished disabled veterans, with deep history narrated by leading scholars in the fields of disability studies, history, and psychology to illustrate the human cost of war and the enormous sacrifices of military service. These sacrifices are brought to life through hundreds of carefully curated still images and archival footage from across the country. “The goal of this film is to try to understand the realities and challenges that disabled veterans have faced throughout history and continue to face today,” says Burns. “There is a real necessity to bridge the gap between civilians and those who have served in the military. It is our hope that the film will encourage a candid discussion in communities across the country, and create understanding and awareness of the sacrifices involved in military service.” Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Officer and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS, said, “PBS has broadcast numerous documentaries and programs that highlight the reality of life in the military, as well as in-depth shows that focus on some of the challenges confronted by returning veterans. We look forward to sharing the film with all Americans timed to this coming Veterans Day.” “As a Vietnam veteran, I believe this initiative will help in bridging the divide between the military and public,” says NEH Chairman William Adams. “NEH is committed to projects that use the humanities to inspire public discussion of the important issues of our time, and this new film offers a compelling way to open up meaningful dialogue about the service and sacrifice of disabled veterans.” Lois Pope, a noted philanthropist and the film’s underwriter, says, “This film is about the human costs of war. It should
serve to remind and educate all of us about the courageous men and women who have sacrificed parts of their bodies and minds fighting for our country.” A poignant tribute to the history of disabled veterans in the U.S., DEBT OF HONOR is an unflinching portrait of the realities of warfare and disabilities. The program features illuminating interviews with some of the country’s most prominent disabled veterans, including U.S. Representative Tammy Duckworth (Illinois); former U.S. Senator and Veterans Affairs Administrator Max Cleland (Georgia); former Garrison Commander of Fort Belvoir, Col. Gregory Gadson; and actor, motivational speaker and Iraq War Army veteran J.R. Martinez. Gadson, a double amputee veteran of the war in Iraq who shares his experiences on camera, calls DEBT OF HONOR “one of the most accurate and balanced productions I have ever seen. It should be mandatory viewing for all high school civics classes.” The diverse group of scholars and military and medical experts who have participated in the film includes Beth Linker, University of Pennsylvania professor and author of War’s Waste: Rehabilitation in World War I America; David A. Gerber, director emeritus of the Center for Disability Studies at the University of Buffalo, State University of New York; Dr. Charles Marmar, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at New York University and director of the PTSD Research Program at NYU Langone Medical Center; James Wright, president emeritus of Dartmouth College; and David Blight, professor of American history at Yale University. Admiral Mike Mullen, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, provides a thought-provoking perspective to the film.

Friendship Run For Steve Spell
By: Kickstart And Donut On August 29, 2015 we were riding for a good cause and our good friends Dawn Kirkland, Steve Spell and Mark & Becky Forsyth. They were involved in a motorcycle accident on March 7, 2015 at 6:30 pm on HWY 321 in Gaston, SC. A drunk driver hit them from behind at a stoplight. This benefit was supported by over 300 bikers who participated in the ride along with the following stops that started at T’s Country Bar, Ventures, The Shack, The Barn, J.D’s, Bunkys, J.D.s Too, then back to T’s Country Bar. KSU at 11:30am, LBI at 5:00pm. T’s staff and friends provided food. The menu included fried and grilled pork chops, slaw, and potato salad. They also had a bake sale, an auction, and a 50/50 raffle, which was given back along with the best hand. Tickets were sold for a Glock on the raffle and was won by Archie’s Cycles in Swansea, SC. Wesco Trailers donated a trailer to be auctioned off. Karaoke was done by Swing Time. Laren White donated custom mirrors to help support our friends. This was a special day to remember everyone that was affected by this accident. So please try to help your love ones pass the word to drink responsibly. God bless you all and, Dawn, may you rest in peace my friend. You’ll be missed by all your friends here in the two-wheel family. We love you! A special thanks to all that that may have not been mentioned as there was so many that made it a blessing to this day. Your friends here at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, Kickstart and Donut. MLLH&R RIDE SAFE!

Push For Helmet Laws Motorcycle Riders Foundation www.MRF.org Right now, the push for motorcycle helmet laws is stronger than ever. Its bigger than a handful of the usual government agencies pushing for mandatory helmet laws, It is that, of course, too, but there is another factor at work as well. And it’s a very natural thing to happen, the desire to protect children. Many skate parks, BMX parks, horse rides, go carting, etc. all now require helmets for youngsters, and we are OK with that. So long as that continues, the likely hood of keeping states helmet law free gets slimmer. But it certainly is coming from agencies and departments all over the country, and its getting nasty. Recently at the State Motorcycle Administrators annual conference the Vice President of Government Relations for the Governors Highway Safety Association, Erik Strickland, touted the benefits of an Obama backed transportation plan that would have given the federal Department of Transportation back the ability to lobby state legislatures about implementing helmet laws. Then in the next breath, he referred to the language in the transportation bill, which is currently working its way through Congress, and is likely to pass soon. Specifically, he called the language to stiffen the lobby ban to the whole of the federal government, state governments, and local governments, “A real pain in the ass”. That bill also contains language that would commission

a study to determine the best practices to avoid motorcycle crashes in the first place. Saving lives instantly. Is that also a “real pain in the ass” Erik Strickland? That’s your governors’ direct pipeline for ideas for state law. In a recent publication by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, they had a two-page article about the actions that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has taken to enforce helmet laws by law enforcement officers. The proposed rule by the safety agency would effectively give law enforcement the ability to pull over, ticket, or worse, any motorcyclists wearing a helmet that the officer felt did not meet the new appropriate standards with a visual test on the road. So, should this rule become final? That is almost a certainty at this point. Any helmet that appears to be less than one inch in thickness authorizes a traffic cop to pull you over for further inspection. Of course, the Insurance Institute publication just echoed the same un truths that all of the other safety groups march out. It is interesting and troubling that the agencies that are charged with making things safer, most who don’t ride motorcycles, do not care to listen to the very people they are trying to protect. Bureaucracy at its best. Then, in the Wall Street Journal this week was an article where groups of bicyclists are opposing mandatory bicycle helmet laws. They say mandatory helmet laws, particularly for adults, make cycling less convenient and seem less safe, thus hindering the larger public-health gains of more people riding bikes. They think that more bicycles on the street will result in greater degree of visibility due to numbers and therefore reduce injuries and fatalities. Cycling advocates are quick to say they’re not anti-helmet. Instead, they’re opposed to helmet laws and their unintended consequences. Sound familiar? Make strange bedfellows. For all is not lost. We need to stay engaged and active. We, the guardians of motorcycling, must do what those before us and those before them have done. A fight is brewing and we need to be ready. The forward force to pass mandatory helmet laws is swelling. We need to push back with a tidal wave. To start that wave you should e-mail your new best friend, Erik Strickland, Vice President of Federal Relations for the Governors Highway Safety Association. You can reach him here: estrickland@ghsa.org or give him a ring at his direct line, 202-789-0942 x180 You can tell him the MRF sent you!
