THUNDERZONE Thunder www.TheThunderZone.com
October in the Carolinas means football and fall colors and frost. The chill in the air is welcomed after the stifling heat of summer and even the motorcycle seems to like the cool dry air better than the hot humid summer air. I like it. People tell me that they like to go to Daytona in the fall because the weather is nicer than in the spring. I guess the same applies to the Myrtle Beach Fall Rally where the crowds as well as the temperatures are more moderate. I know that at the AHDRA Jim McClure Nitro Nationals the nitro bikes will perform better and the campfire will feel better, too. Now I do not want to hear any whining about it being cold. Bikers are supposed to be sharp, and keenly aware of their surroundings and circumstances, so instead of complaining about the cold, dress appropriately for the conditions. It amazes me how, when you have the proper gear on, that you can go on down the highway in comfort, even in chilly to cold temperatures. Don’t you just love the way the cadgers look at you like you are nuts for riding your bike in “this kind of weather”? I love to wave at them as they chatter with the other occupants about how cold and crazy I must be and how they would never even consider it. Stop by any of the advertisers on these pages and pick up any missing pieces to your winter riding wardrobe and enjoy some of the best days of the year. I think fall riding is invigorating! One more thing that I would like to share with you is that we are now offering charities, benefits, non-profits, and clubs cut rate prices on full or quarter page event flyer publication in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. We already beat the snot out of the cost of flyers, but we want to help you get the word out about your event in a big way at an unbelievably low cost. If you create a flyer and place in the magazine, it will also be in our printed Cruisin’ Calendar, our online magazine edition, our on line Cruisin’ Calendar, and our weekly event reminders, which are sent directly to the inboxes of our 2000+ subscribers. If you buy a display ad, it not only saves copying costs, it also eliminates costly and time-consuming flyer distribution. Your information will be distributed before the first weekend of the month. I dare you to compare the cost on this deal to anything out there. A display ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine could make your event grow exponentially. I would expect it to, at the very least, pay for itself in increased attendance. Call 336-885-5400 for details and we will hook you up.

Welcoming Home A Hero
By: Rose and Lloyd What a perfect day to welcome a Hero from Afghanistan! Saturday, September 10th, just a day before we remembered the 10-year anniversary of the disaster of 9/11/01, a hero came back home to Liberty, NC. This young 28-year-old Sgt. Johnathan Matthew “Chuck” Frady served two tours of duty and received three purple hearts. He is just an example of the many men and women that are giving their time and some even their lives for our Freedom. Little did Robin Honeycutt, “Chuck’s” mother, realize when she called and ask The Patriot Guard Riders to meet at WalMart on Elm St in Greensboro and usher him home to a celebration that the surprise she thought she was giving “Chuck”, would also become an overwhelming surprise for her. Not only did The Patriot Guards show up in full force, but also The Combat Veteran’s Association, United Riders Riding Club, Hard Core Ministries NC from Siler City, and many more were also there. Over 100 bikes showed up to welcome our hero. With the help of Guilford County Sheriff’s Deputies we were escorted to 421 heading to Liberty, at the county line, Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputies took over to ensure a safe ride. As we entered Liberty the whole town came out. The Fire Station had a flag hanging on ladder truck and the whole main street was lined with people and decorations. The ride ended at Hurricane Jane’s Restaurant owned by Ron and Jane Moore. There was a beautiful and heart felt speech by “Chuck’s” mother and then she introduced him to the crowd. His speech was one of thanks and letting everyone know that he would definitely let all his bud’s still fighting in Afghanistan that the American people were supporting them. There was also a speech given in honor of “Chuck” and our military by Liberty Mayor pro-tem Terry Caviness. Then the party started and the owners of Hurricane Jane’s gave free food to all veterans, while the band “Hardwood & The knockers” entertained the crowd. It was such a wonderful day and an inspiration to be able to welcome Sgt. Johnathan Matthew “Chuck” Frady home and let him know he was our Hero that day.

Davis Harley-Davidson National Open House, Bike Show, And Demo Day
By: Scott Wicker Anytime Davis HarleyDavidson in Burlington holds a National Open House it has always been a highly anticipated event due to the introduction of the new model year HarleyDavidsons and the chance to get to ride one on their very popular demo ride program. The 2012 Harley-Davidson Twin Cam Motorcycles may be one of the most popular lines in several years due to the fact that the 103 cubic inch engine is a option on most of the bikes equipped with Twin Cam Power. Demo rides left the dealership one after the other with most of the models on hand out on each ride. We were able to demo a 2012 Street Glide for the first time and MAN what a RIDE!! The fact that the Street Glide is not equipped from the factory with a Tour Pack on the rear gives you a ride with a feel of greater stability due to the fact of loosing the 70 - 80 pound Tour Pack. We may have to get a removable Tour Pack kit for the Ultra? Davis allowed individuals to set up outside and bring some of their unwanted old parts to be sold in the swap meet. Several individuals brought out some very popular items, which included seats, helmets, light bars, Tour Pack accessories, and such. All were very pleased with the deals they got and everyone is anxious for Davis to possibly hold another swap meet in the future. The highlight of the day at Davis H-D had to be the bike show. Davis’ shows have become very popular due to the number of classes and the fair judging done by the staff and members of the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter. 17 categories were judged and beautiful trophies were awarded. The winners and top-finishers in the bike show are as follows. PRE-EVO: 1st Place - Ken Hall, 2nd Place - Randy Davis. SPORTSTER: 1st Place - Lisa Wicker, 2nd Place - Lori Salmon. DYNA: 1st Place - Blane Emery. SOFTAIL (EVO): 1st Place - Manolis Harvailis. SOFTAIL (Twin Cam): 1st Place - Tony McCullock, 2nd Place - Bryan Forte, 3rd Place - Lee Graham. SPORT TOURING (Pre-2000): 1st Place - Mitch Oakley. SPORT TOURING (2000-up): 1st Place - Carroll Curtis, 2nd Place - Terry Brady, 3rd Place - Ron Namest. ROAD GLIDE: 1st Place - Larry Prator, 2nd Place - William Simmons. HARLEY TRIKE: 1st Place - Hugh Whitt, 2nd Place - Jimmy Lynch. FULL DRESSER: 1st Place - Scott Wicker, 2nd Place Jeff Brooks. BEST OF SHOW: Mitch Oakley. BEST “WEST COAST STYLE” BIKE: Bryan Forte. BEST ROAD GLIDE: Larry Prater. BEST RUNNER-UP: Terry Brady. BEST LADIES OF HARLEY: Lori Salmon. BEST LADIES OF HAR-
LEY (Sportster): Lisa Wicker. BEST BURLINGTON H.O.G. CLUB BIKE: Mitch Oakley. We would like to thank everyone at Davis HarleyDavidson for a great, fun filled day. Thanks also to PegramPrevatte Insurance in Burlington for providing some of the best food we have ever had. Remember! Ride Safe!

By: Whistle The bike night at Rocky Mount HarleyDavidson on September 8th was a blast! Grave Digger, one of America’s most famous monster trucks in the USHRA Monster Jam series, was there and drew a crowd, but Rocky Mount HarleyDavidson with John and Mary and their staff are the real reason everyone shows up. They had great food, 50/50 raffles and live music by Rocky Mount’s own Monkey Foot, and, oh yeah, bunches of burnouts. There ain’t nothing like a revved up Harley and smoke rolling off the tire! I’m sure they got a discount on a new tire when they pulled around front. (Ha). Thanks to Rocky Mount HarleyDavidson for a great evening and please keep in mind the toy run coming up on November 19. With the trying economy, I’m sure the kids will need all the help they can get.

Thunder In The Smokies
By: WildThing The thing about motorcycles is, everyone that rides is looking for someplace to ride to. Every spring and fall for the past nine years, the Thunder In The Smokies motorcycle rally has answered that question. They have invited riders to come, ride the mountains, and enjoy the best things a motorcycle rally has to offer. Namely: good music, bike games, a bike show, food and beverages, vendors and the camaraderie of other riders. On September 9-11, 2011 the Handlebar Corral at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds, was the place to be. Mother Nature blessed the event with near perfect weather, warm and sunny all day, and clear, cool, star-studded evenings. This year was the largest crowd ever and we watched in amazement as the motorcycles literally poured through the gate Friday evening to enjoy the music. The line-up this fall was decidedly country and Virginia native, Brinn Black, was first on stage to get things going. She is a lovely young lady with a sweet voice. Watch her star rise and you can say you saw her at Thunder In The Smokies! Next up was the Hank Williams, Jr. tribute band, All My Rowdy Friends. You would swear that it was Hank Jr. up there on the stage – they do a great job. The headliner for Friday evening was Eric Lee Beddingfield, another up and coming country singer, who just wowed the crowd. Saturday morning, the gates and the vendors opened at 9 and there was a tour ride scheduled for 10, that we did not go on, so someone will have to let me know how it was. We did

get to the rally in time to enjoy the bike show. There were 20+ bikes registered and everyone through the gates received a yellow ticket to vote in the peoples choice bike show by dropping your ticket into the upturned helmet next to your favorite bike. There were dressed up stock bikes, stretched out customs, theme bikes, trikes, and baggers to choose from. The ticket count was really close between a real sharp custom and a red, white, and blue memorial themed dresser. The dresser, owned by Tod ‘Wierdo’ Wooldridge of Tennessee, was the winner by just seven tickets. He has won this show before, but each time he comes back, there is something new added. The bike games took place in the afternoon with 25-30 competitors in front of a huge, appreciative crowd. They played the traditional slow race, weenie bite, plunger game, and the haystack game then added a new innovation where the biker rode along a line of cones while the passenger tossed balls at a toilet seat target! All these games were fun to watch and the competition was stiff due to the $100 cash prize that was at stake for each game. The music lineup for Saturday afternoon and evening was impressive, with Brinn Black starting it off at 4:45. Next up at 7:30 was Burns and Poe, described as the Sonny and Cher of country music, who rocked the crowd to the background roar of motorcycles flooding into the festival grounds. Cody McCarver, now on his own after 12 years with Confederate Railroad, was the headliner for Saturday night. Wait, there’s more! Sunday kicked off with a free pancake breakfast, vendors open, a church service, and more music. All this for only $20 for the weekend pass, makes Thunder In The Smokies a great value and it just keeps getting better and better thanks to the hard work of Chris and Lori who have promoted and worked this rally two times a year for the past nine years. Watch the pages of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for next year’s rallies.

NC Helmet Tickets Tried
By: Mark Infield On the weekend of the Smoke Out 12, a cop in Moore County was popping people for illegal helmets. Elizabeth D. Sorrell of the law firm McGrath & Danielson (Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group) represented 8 defendants on September 7th for free. One of the cases was dismissed when the arresting officer testified that he discovered that the label did not have a manufacturer’s date, which is required by DOT. When asked to see the officers DOT approved helmet, it was discovered that it did not have the manufacture’s date, either. The court looked at the label and dismissed that one case. The trooper, who is a rider and apparently a great guy, said he wrote these tickets because they have been instructed to do so. After Ms. Sorrell shared the FMVSS 218 standard with him, he was stunned that the standard did not mention anything about padding thickness, etc. What that did was allowed for a cross examination where the trooper admitted that physically there was nothing about the helmet that he could point to that violated the standard. She made a clear record that the sole reasons for the ticket was the lack of a DOT label and that there was nothing else about the helmet that violated North Carolina Law. The court ruled against the defendants, but stated that it was troubled that counsel had a letter from Chief Counsel for DOT stating that the label is for manufacturer certification and does
not apply to citizens as they can remove the label without violating the standard. North Carolina law does not require the helmet to be certified or approved by DOT; it requires that it complies with the standard. Even though all were convicted Ms. Sorrell was able to build a great record for appeal. These cases have been appealed and are headed to Superior Court. Ms. Sorrell stated that if they lose there, that would provide an excellent chance on appeal and that she will be pursuing that on to the Court Of Appeals. The State of North Carolina produced a training video (at taxpayer’s expense) for law enforcement to show them how to spot illegal helmets and how to prove they are illegal. In light of the cross examination it seems that it was a monumental waste of money. One can only speculate as to whether they even read the standard before producing the video. Give it a view. It is quite amusing. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=txndCgEb2jM If you have been ticketed for an improper helmet in North Carolina, please contact: Elizabeth D. Sorrell, McGrath & Danielson, 757-595-7505 or at: www.motorcyclelawgroup. com “The Firm That Rides”® for a consultation. This firm is handling these cases for free to try to establish a basis to declare the law vague and unenforceable.

Poker Run For James Hunt
By: Charles Holcombe So, Thursday after work I’m checking e-mail and see this message from Lincoln at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine about a poker run in Salisbury for a fellow named “James Hunt”. I’m thinking I don’t know anyone involved, but my plans for the weekend got canceled due to Hurricane Irene and I like meeting good people, so I called the contact number and spoke to Jesse Goldin with Dead Donkey Customs, the sponsor of the event. He was happy we were riding up to take some pix and do a story about the ride and gave me directions. Cassie and I rode out early that Saturday, August 27th. I wanted to test the 45 MPH winds from the hurricane that was pelting the coast before I committed to ride her with me the rest of the trip. Though the wind gusts blew us around a bit, we were OK and kept going. Now, I’m not sure if it’s gonna rain, too, but the temps are supposed to be around 92º so we should dry out in no time, right? We rode into Fat Jack’s Pub around 11:00 and introduced ourselves to Jesse and Dub (AKA Doug), got some poker hands, event t-shirts, and some 50/50 tickets. Jesse gave me one of his Dead Donkey shirts, which was pretty cool! We met Jack, owner of the pub who was with his friend Angela. This is a really cool pub hidden over by the National Cemetery on Military Avenue, which I’ll probably be back to, and I’ve already met someone I know! As I hear last call for the ride to begin, I’m finding out a little info about the ride. This benefit is for James “Pops” Hunt who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and a lot of great

people have rode in to help cover medical expenses for him. I haven’t seen James yet, but I’m sure I will before the ride is over. Now that all the bikes are fired up, we are led out via police escort through the downtown streets of Salisbury. I’m seeing the girls riding ahead of me waving and shouting at everyone we pass, the riders revving engines like we are beginning a drag race, just outright energy all over! Our next stop is Tamarac Marina. The bike count there was around 65, and I’m not sure how many passengers, they were all over the place. And again, I meet even more people I know. Enthusiasm and brotherhood is alive and well in this crowd! The winds have calmed down a bit now, enough to make the 90º heat feel great by the water. It seemed like we had to mount up too soon and head out to our next stop, Happy Days Lounge, a place in the woods down Richfield Road in Richfield, NC that I had seen on one journey, but never knew was actually open. It was certainly alive today. Motorcycles were everywhere. There were a lot of nice rides to look at and the owners were eager to talk about them, just ask! One was kinda small, short and had ammo cans for saddlebags, a 49cc I think? Hmmm. On to our next stop, The Rock Bottom Saloon in Salisbury where owner James Logan was more than gracious to have us. James was also riding for the cause today along with Foxy, who was more than helpful showing us the way around most of the day. I like this bar! You gotta come check this place out. I got some great pix of all the girls on our bikes in front of the bar, and a couple great shots of James “Pops” Hunt on a bike, surrounded by all the girls. I knew I’d meet him, and he was wearing a really big grin. What a genuine and nice guy. I didn’t want to leave, but we were starving and the next stop had food! We’re cruising on to the final stop and this crowd is still wide open. This is probably the most energetic ride I’ve been on this year! I’m glad someone else is leading cause I don’t have a clue where we are! The Buccaneer Lounge on Barringer Road. I think we’re in Rowan County? There was some really good BBQ here provided by East Rowan Café, a ton of door prizes from RCR, and auction items that were too many to list! The band played, and good people had good times at the “Buc”. I heard that nearly $2500 was raised for “Pops”. My hat’s off to Dead Donkey Customs and all involved in putting together this great event for a great person. I’m sure we’ll see this crowd again! To find out more about the sponsor and all involved, visit their face book page, http:// www.facebook.com/people/DeadDonkey-Customs-Cycle/100001174365389 Jesse will be glad to hear from ya.

7th Annual Bull City Rumble
By: Mark Infield The Bull City Rumble, billed as a vintage motorcycle and scooter show and rally took place on September 2-3 in Durham’s Bright Leaf District. I have wanted to attend this event for several years, but something always popped up that prevented me from going. This year was different and I took advantage of it. The event is hosted by Ton-Up North Carolina, a vintage motorcycle club based in Durham. The term “Ton-Up” means to break the 100 miles per hour barrier, and originated with British bikers in the 1950s. Ton-Up NC has hosted the event for seven years. This was their second year in Durham. The Rumble began with registration Friday night at Joe Van Gogh Coffee shop on Broad Street and continued with a ride to Greer Street Beer Garden and on to The Casbah for midnight Mods v Rockers music. Saturday morning breakfast was at Parker and Otis with a ride over to Main Street rally site at The Casbah. There, DJ Junior from Pittsburg, PA was spinning 45’s on turntables with PBR labels on them. No computers here, just honest rock-n-roll blaring out for everyone’s enjoyment. Inside The Casbah was a nice bar/lounge area and Joshua Hoffman Photography was set up offering free pictures of your bike. All you had to do was roll it in, take the shot and roll it out the front door. Main Street was lined with vintage motorcycles. Triumph, Ducati, BSA, Norton, Hercules, Royal Enfield, BMW, Honda, Matchless, Yamaha, Lambretta, Vespa, Moto-Guzzi, Ural, and even Harley-Davidson were represented. A few vendors including Ray Price Triumph had display booths set up. Natty Greene’s Brewery was one of the most popular ones. Think of that! People walked and gawked before gathering in The Casbah where Sean K. Preston played rock-a-billy music leading up to the announcement of the show winners and the raffle prizes. The 2011 Bull City Rumble Show Winners are as follows: BEST MODERN/RETRO: Xeng Yang, ‘06 Triumph Thruxton; BEST SCOOTER: Tony Marinello, ‘58 Vespa; BEST BRITISH: Justin Hall, ‘73 Norton Commando; BEST EUROPEAN: Keith Showalter, ‘85 BMW R80; BEST JAPANESE: Eddie Chavez, ‘73 Yamaha TX650; and BEST IN SHOW: Wayne Pollack, ‘74 Norton Commando. After the unique trophies were awarded, The Casbah geared up for the evening’s entertainment - 3 live bands and a live burlesque show featuring Selia D’Katzmeow, Dolly Dee, Cherry Von Bomb, and Porcelain. Those girls turned heads when they walked through the crowd! The 7th Annual Bull City Rumble was a blast and If I was you (but I’m not), I would make plans to ride on over to Durham, NC for the 8th Annual Bull City Rumble on Labor Day weekend 2012. Thanks to The Casbah, Joshua Hoffman Photography, Combustion Cycles, Natty Greene’s Brewery, and Ton-Up North Carolina for their participation and support. The money raised was donated to Preservation Durham.

By: Caroline I remember buying my leather chaps from Wayne Pinnix, the owner of Circle W Leather over 10 years ago and after many, many miles of riding they are still in excellent shape. That is one of the main points that Wayne makes to his customers, his leather gear is the finest quality. He just won’t sell you bad leather goods! And not just for wearing - as Wayne says he has all the leather for the bike and the biker. If you are looking for fine leather bags for your bike, Wayne has them, too. But Wayne’s loyal customers are well aware of this. He has a great customer base that he has developed since the 1980’s when he first started his business. Not only does he have all your leather gear, but he carries rain suits, cup holders, novelty and DOT helmets, patches, flags, facemasks, eyewear, riding pins, gremlin bells, belts, belt buckles, and Harley boots. He also just got in deerskin gloves that are the softest leather I have ever felt! Ladies, don’t think that this is just for they guys, he can outfit us in a variety of styles and sizes. Every year Wayne has his leather special of a jacket, vest, gloves, and chaps for $180 - a price that you will not find anywhere else! He knows exactly what bikers need because it has all been tested by his own experience! Circle W Leather is truly a business that is biker owned and operated. Wayne has advertised his successful business in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for the past 10 years and we hope he continues for many years to come. For those of you who have never visited Circle W Leather, you would be in for a treat by heading over to the back of the Marketplace Mall at 2101 Peters Creek Parkway in WinstonSalem, NC. Circle W Leather is open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and Wayne will be happy to outfit you for riding for much less than you would spend elsewhere.

2nd Annual We Ride For Those Who Can’t Remembrance Run
By: Jim Hollister, President of Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 NC. The 2nd Annual We Ride For Those Who Can’t Remembrance Run was held on Saturday, September 3rd at Hotrodz of Fayetteville, NC. About 200 bikes took part in this annual event to raise money to help send local ex-POWs to The Ride Home in Andersonville, GA over the POW-MIA Recognition Day weekend. There were several vendors and displays on site, including Mayhem Street Riders, Operation Helping Hands For Heroes, Patriot Hunts, Freedom Biker Church, Tumbleweed Junction Paracord Bracelets, Liberty Racing, the POW Bucket, and Chick-fil-A; many of them providing donations or giving proceeds to the ride. The bikers starting arriving at 8am and they quickly filled the grassy area behind Hotrodz. Overflow parking had to be opened beside the building. The bikers were treated to breakfast from Chick-fil-A and there were raffles and other activities on site. At 10:30 there was a rider’s safety meeting and a prayer led by pastor J.D. Tew from Freedom Biker Church. Wayne Daniels, owner of the POW Bucket tribute car donated the proceeds from a recent fundraising event held in Franklinton, NC to Patriot Hunts. The money will be used to take the children of 30 warriors killed in action on a private hunting trip at the Allen Brothers Hunting Preserve. The ride started out heading south on Bragg Boulevard, and 62 miles later the bikers stopped at Freedom Memorial Park in downtown Fayetteville to watch members of Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 NC conduct the Missing Man Table Ceremony. They tearfully listened as the names of North Carolina’s Missing In Action from the Vietnam War were called out. Many people don’t realize there are still more than 75,000 Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Navy personnel still listed as missing in action from all wars. A special guest, Rudy Hernandez, attended the ceremony. Rudy is a Medal of Honor recipient from

Goldrush 14 Charity Bike Show
By: Mark Infield On Saturday, August 20th WildThing and I cruised on down to Wilmington to attend the Pure Gold Goldrush #14. Jerry Reid and his staff have enough experience doing these shows to know just what works. All it takes is beautiful bikes, pretty girls, big trophies and great door prizes. There was also a bike wash, chain saw carving, vendors, raffles, and music. That was just what was on the outside of the club! Duke Children’s Miracle Network, where Pure Gold has raised and donated just over $382,000 over the years, was, again, this year’s beneficiary. Pure Gold also teamed up with 4 Wheel Parts in Raleigh to help them reach their goal of realizing a fallen soldier’s dream of building his jeep. 28 year old Air Force Tech. Sergeant Dan Zerbe was a pararescue jumper and was on the CH-47 Chinook helicopter which was shot down 6 August 2011 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom that killed 31 U.S. special operation troops, most of them from the elite Navy SEAL Team Six unit that killed alQaida leader Osama bin Laden. 4 Wheel Parts will finish the project as a tribute to Tech. Sergeant Dan Zerbe and present it to his widow before Christmas. Outside the tent, FMX Stunt Jumpers, X-Games Medalist Mad Mike Jones, Brent Schwalm, and Seth Elliot put on a show for the crowd and Mike the Chainsaw Sculptor turned Cypress logs into Brown Bears. There were some really top-notch entries in the bike show and you can see the pictures of them at www.FullThrottleMagazine.com. Jerry and the crew took note of the weather as a summer shower approached and got all of the awards presented before it hit. The class winners were: LADIES: 1st Place - Alisha Patrick (74 Harley), 2nd Place - Laureen Taylor (96 Suzuki). METRIC STOCK: 1st Place - Ken Jahna (05 Honda), 2nd Place - Jeff Costa (06 Honda). METRIC MODIFIED: 1st Place - Marcus Bamhil (01 Yamaha), 2nd Place - Carl Wilson (72 Honda). BIG TWIN STOCK: 1st Place - John Wimberly (04 Harley), 2nd Place - Walter Smith (03 Big Dog), 3rd Place - Hank Thibodeau (01 Harley). BIG TWIN MODIFIED: 1st Place - Robert Machine (96 Harley), 2nd Place - Smoken Joe (06 Harley). RADICAL: 1st Place - Stan Carlton (06 Custom), 2nd Place - Greg Mayo (07 RPM Chopper), 3rd Place - Hank Thibodeau (82 Kawasaki). MOST UNUSUAL: 1st Place Scott Scheubar (68 Rupp), 2nd Place - David Simpson (80 Suzuki). BAGGER: 1st Place - Bob Ewest (04 Harley), 2nd Place - Chris Plera (07 Harley). BOBBER: 1st Place - Dan Shaw (79 Yamaha), 2nd Place - Dan Shaw (96 Kawasaki), 3rd Place - Dan Shaw (99 Honda). SPORTBIKE: 1st Place - John Kropp (06
Kawasaki). SPORTBIKE MODIFIED: 1st Place - Precision Cycle (06 R6), 2nd Place - Precision Cycle (06 GSXR), 3rd Place - Precision Cycle (03 Busa). ANTIQUE: 1st Place - Herb Smith (1950 Panhead) BEST OF SHOW: KWC Kenny Williams (2011 Custom Bagger). Lots of people ran in front of the storm (rookies!), but those who stayed under the tent and did not get wet enjoyed the music of DJ EyeCon and Dane Britt, local guys who make up the Beat Transformers, as they rocked out. If you hung around for the evening entertainment, you also saw Jasmine from Crazy Horse Wilmington win the best biker babe contest. Jerry wishes to thank all the people who attended Gold Rush and Scott Britt for all his support and help throughout the years. Jerry and his staff invite you to come back next year and welcome you to visit any of their Pure Gold or Crazy Horse locations throughout the year. By: Danny Nifong The TIME OUT HUT located at 410 Piedmont Drive, (just off business 85), in Lexington, NC, opened its doors in January of 2008. The Time Out Hut is a private club with memberships available for $10 or FREE with your Full Throttle VIP card. They don’t put up with a lot of nonsense and are regarded as the best party in town and as a community bar. They work with members and the community to help out with special events and fundraisers. They have raised money for the needy families, contributed to other fund raisers, sponsored a Little League team, a city softball team, gathered food for needy seniors, and supported the Davidson County Hospice Chapter as well as made food donations to the Pastor’s Pantry in Lexington. They are a gold sponsor of the annual Josh T. Harris Veterans Memorial ride and event for wounded veterans. The Time Out Hut is the first bar ever to be recognized and allowed entry into the Lexington Chamber of Commerce. The bar’s operation and being is due to the involvement of its members. Much of the equipment, furnishings, and labor were donated by the members. This creates fun and entertainment as well as a special environment you won’t find elsewhere. They have 2 pool tables, a dance floor, a 100” projection TV, ATM machine, breathalyzer, as well as a patio outside, and a shuttle van. A nearby hotel offers discount lodging for partygoers who enjoyed a little too much partying. Their regular daily drink prices meet or beat most other places specials. The members almost always have got something going on every week. After all, most members are local friends that like to get together for some good ole fellowship and fun times. They have designated drivers and a shuttle van to ensure your safety after a night of partying. Just give them a call at 336-313-0125 or tell a staff member if you need a ride to and from a great little bar for a fun time. Check them out at www.TimeOutHut.com and also on Facebook. See you there.

By: Jeff Deal On September 2nd, two steel beams from the World Trade Center Twin Towers made a stop in Asheville on their way to Clyde, NC as part of a fundraiser for a memorial that is being constructed to honor fallen firefighters. The beams will be placed in the structure in front of the Clyde Fire Department and will be accessible to the public at anytime. A flag that listed the names of all 343 New York City Firefighters that lost their lives also accompanied it and will be displayed in the firehouse. This was unveiled on the 10th anniversary of the attack on September 11th 2001. Lost in the attack along with the firefighters were, 60 Police officers, 2606 people in New York City, 125 at the Pentagon, and 246 people on the four planes of which there were no survivors. Captain Ricky Mehaffey of the Clyde Fire Department was on hand to help with the fundraiser, which started out at bike night at MR Motorcycle and the next morning with a ride from Asheville to Clyde. Our September cover always has a picture of the twin towers with the words “Never Forget” in the top band. Now the town of Clyde has part of history.

Team Brady 2011 Ride For Kids
By: Mark Terry Asheville, NC, 500+ motorcycles, the last Sunday in August, $113,000, beautiful curving roads, smiles, laughs, and tears of joy. Add this all together and what do you get? The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Ride for Kids. For the last three years we have participated in what I believe to be the best organized, most rewarding ride there is. Good friends Les and Sue Valyer from the Statesville HOG Chapter told me about this ride four years ago when their grandson Brady was diagnosed with a brain tumor. We could not make the ride that year but did get there the following year and were immediately hooked. You can count on me, God willing, to be there every year from now on. I am very happy to tell everyone that Brady is doing very well and was able to join us this year for the ride. Three years ago, my wife and I rode up to The Station Inn and then followed the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way to Asheville by ourselves to hook up with Les and Sue to be a part of “Team Brady”. We had a dozen bikes in our group joining close to 600 others who combined raised a total of $115,000. Last year we had a couple of bikes join us Saturday at Freeborne’s for lunch and again we rode the Parkway all the way to Asheville to meet up with “Team Brady”. Our group grew to 18 bikes and again the total event raised around $115,000.00. This year, because everyone always goes back and we tell others, our group grew to 28 bikes plus one minivan with Brady himself present, which was a real blessing. Our group met at Tilley’s Harley-Davidson in Statesville and after a quick rider’s meeting and a prayer we all headed to Freeborne’s on the Parkway for lunch, where we filled up the dining room. After some great conversation and all the food we could eat, it was time to head to Asheville. Again we rode the Parkway all the way with a couple of quick pit stops along the way and a nice break on top of Mount Mitchell where clouds were rolling in and the high temperature was 59º. Once back down on the Parkway it was back in the high 70’s and sunny. We arrived in Asheville around 6pm and once settled in at the hotel, we enjoyed a nice dinner before calling it a day. Sunday, August 28th began with a 5:30am wake up call and it was kickstands up at 7pm for “Team Brady” heading to the nearby mall to stage for the big ride. Brady was very excited and he agreed to ride on one of the escort bikes that offer rides for the kids present. There are dozens of bikers that volunteer every year to carry these kids on the ride of a lifetime. Some have trikes, some have sidecars and some are just standard two wheelers but regardless of what type or brand the kids who ride have BIG smiles and it gives them an experience they will
never forget. This year was no disappointment with just over 500 bikes present, beautiful clear skies, and nice temperatures. The group pulled out of the Asheville Mall at 9am sharp lead by police escort with the help of four local law enforcement agencies. We headed to the Blue Ridge Parkway, which was shut down both ways for us and turned on Hwy 74 heading to Lake Lure. Every intersection was blocked and the ride went by too fast for those of us that love to ride. I know it had to go by very fast for all the kids on the lead 30 bikes or so. There is nothing like a police escorted ride on the most beautiful roads in Western North Carolina with 500 plus bikes. When we arrived at Lake Lure we saw a huge tent right next to the lake with seats for everyone, they handed us each a lunch as we walked in and as soon as everyone was seated, the program began. These kids come up on the stage and tell about the experience they had riding and bring us up to date on what they did over the summer. The older survivors tell us what is happening in their lives from school, jobs, boyfriends, and girlfriends. Doctors from Duke Medical Center are present and they tell us, firsthand, how the funds are being used and the advances in research as a result of the generous help of all that attend this ride. It was very special this year to have Brady with us. For most of us this was our first time to meet Brady. On Saturday he was very bashful but when he got up on the stage Sunday and they put the microphone in front of him he turned into a seasoned entertainer who would not quit. This is what it is all about and why we ride. Here is a young man that has been sick most of his life and has endured more than most of us could imagine. Yet with the help of the doctors and hospitals like Duke and with the funds we donate he is on the stage with a smile that stole everyone’s heart. He has a chance for a long and normal life as do all these young people. We laughed, we cried and there was not a dry eye in the crowd. As quick as it started, it is over, and hundreds of people leave determined to return next year, to bring more friends, and to start raising money now in hopes of raising enough money to never see any young people suffer from this disease again. Remember this ride and mark the last Sunday of August on your calendar now for Asheville, North Carolina next year. In 2012 they will have a new starting and ending point, and the ride will start an hour later to allow everyone to sleep a little longer and I understand the route is expected to be very enjoyable. Please plan to attend and we welcome you to be a part of “Team Brady”. God Bless.

By: Grant If you say Suck, Bang, Blow in a biker crowd, the first thing you hear is “Which One?”. This time we are talking about SBB Roadhouse in Concord/Charlotte on Speedway Boulevard at Concord Mills. On September 2nd SBB held their official 1 year re-launch party. They had specials on food, adult beverages, and music to start the day off, and a bikini contest and live band schedule for later as the sun went down. A corn hole tournament was on the agenda as well. (Does anyone beside me find that name a little disturbing?) I arrived around 1pm and a good group was all ready on hand enjoying the $1 can beer, and ½ price starters. I sat down for a plate of some Kick Ass Nachos and a few brews. SBB Roadhouse has had great food since they have opened and they have redefined the way you’re taken care of as a customer. The wait staff was very attentive and I have no complaints. I wish I could have stayed around for the bikini contest, but it was past my curfew. Suck, Bang, Blow Smokehouse has a bike night on each Wednesday. You can go to the other bike night in that area if you want to see a bunch of crotch rockets, or you can come to where the adults gather and have a good time being HarleyDavidson riders. Of course, all bikes are always welcome, we just don’t give a good damn about hearing you make your rev limiter go off. Keep that crap across the street at the Oil Joint. SBB Smokehouse at 10099 Weddington Rd. Concord, NC (Next to Pat Rogers Speedway Harley-Davidson) is the biker bar of choice at the Speedway. Hope to see you there. By: Wendy Rogers The Steele Angels, an all girls riding group out of Fayetteville, NC, held their annual Back to School Poker Run on September 10th. It was actually a rain date for the Back to School Run that got rained out by hurricane Irene on August 13th. The event started at The Dog House where the bikers registered and drew a card. Then they rode to the other stops, which were Legends, Cape Fear Harley-Davidson, Louie’s and Charlie Mike’s for more cards. After the ride food was provided and there was a 50/50 and great door prizes. The winner of $100 for the best hand was Terry Kinlaw, and the worst hand winner was Gail Swanson, who received $50. The 50/50 winner was Jerry Jackson. He won $180 and donated it all back to The Steele Angels as his contribution. Every year The Steele Angels hold this event to provide school supplies and cash to Cumberland and surrounding counties to help aid the children in need throughout the year. The school system does not supply many of the items the children need, so in a sense, in the long run we are helping prepare our future, because the children of today are our future. We want to thank all of our sponsors and thank all of the people that support us while doing charity work for our community. Don’t miss the 8th Annual Toy Run, coming up November 19th, that is the Saturday before Thanksgiving, starting at 12:00 noon at Legends Pub on Bragg Boulevard, in Fayetteville. Watch The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for the dates of future rides and events.

Don & Robinette Tilley’s 50th Wedding Anniversary
By: Lynette Sherrill On the last Sunday in August, Don and Robinette Tilley celebrated a milestone few people reach. They gathered with family and friends at the Ruritan Clubhouse in Statesville, NC to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Their children, Donna Tilley Pierce, Denise Tilley Levan, and Derek Tilley gave the celebration. The party had an excellent turn out with approximately 400 guests attending. All of Don and Robinette’s grandchildren; Chase, Chance, and Chandler Levan and Cortney and Kyle Pierce were present at the celebration. Friends and family came from all over including all of Don’s brothers and his sister. Robinette’s cousins from Brevard also attended. They had guests from Mississippi, a Harley-Davidson dealer from Duluth, Minnesota, and also employees from HarleyDavidson headquarters in Milwaukee in attendance. Celebrities such as racecar drivers Donnie and Bobby Allison from Alabama along with Kyle Petty from North Carolina were among the guests. Members from the Kyle Petty Charity Ride were there. Don and Robinette thank everyone and want them to know how great it was having friends and family there with them to celebrate their special day. Visit www.FullThrottleMagazine. com for more photos

Shelton’s H-D Military Appreciation Day
By: Gypsygirl What a glorious day here in Goldsboro, NC for Shelton’s H-D and The Harley Owner’s Group to hold their 1st Annual Motorcycle/Car Show and BBQ Cook off for Military Appreciation Day. The sun was bright and shinny, beautiful blue skies, temperatures in the mid 80’s and a whole bunch of great folks, food and fun made for a great day. All donations collected today will help support some great causes here in our area such as The Shriners, American Heart Association, MDA, Santa’s Biker Buddies, Battered Woman’s and Children’s Shelters, as well as the County Animal Shelter. It was such a great turnout with so many people, motorcycles, and pretty cool cars. The band Southern Impact was jamming on stage as we walked around voting for all the different classes of motorcycles and cars as well as tasting and voting on all the BBQ, too! All the cooks did a fine job on the BBQ, but my favorite was served by a cute set of twins Oliva and Micahla. A few motorcycles came in for the bikini bike wash and those girls were having a splendid time staying cool. After all it did get a bit hot! Today’s event went great. A big thank you to all that helped to make this a huge success. Thank you to all the military personnel that keep us safe each an every day. Ride Safe, Stay Safe, See Ya’s Around.

By Scott Wicker On Saturday, August 20th, Bill’s Sports Bar in Burlington, NC hosted the Benefit Ride For “Whiz” White. Registration started at 10:30am. and as usual, bikers showed up and the ride left on time at 12:15pm. Stops were made at several bars in the area, which included The Old Ski Lodge in Ossipee, The Biker Station in Caswell County, and Cuz’s in Hopedale near Burlington. Everyone arrived safely back to Bill’s Sports Bar where they were greeted with a lot of great food provided by “Whiz’s” friends and family. The winners of the Best and Worst Hands donated their winnings back to help benefit “Whiz”. There were lots of great prizes raffled off and a big thanks is owed to Bobbie Dale Williams and Jamie White for collecting those door prizes. With the prizes and everyone’s help, it did make for a successful ride. In all, $800 was raised. Bill and Vikki Cross would like to take this opportunity to extend a “THANK YOU” to everyone who participated on the ride and made it such a success. A Big Thank You to bartenders Belinda and Tonya for making sure no one went thirsty. Steel Pony Charity Ride
supports the local animal control departments with the care and housing of abused and neglected farm animals. The registration for the ride started around 11am at Low Country H-D and had an awesome turn out ranging upwards of 150 bikes by noon! With kick stands up at 12:30 and a police escort to boot, the ride was officially en route! This was an absolute beautiful ride down the interstate and then through the back roads of South Carolina’s highways to Wadmalaw Island to Charleston’s Tea Plantation where the car and bike show was held. There they had raffles, jump castles and ice cream for the kids, karaoke, plenty of food and beverages, and trophies to be awarded at the closing ceremonies. Bottom line was, the cars were immaculate, the bikes were amazing, and the support was unbelievable! If you missed this ride, you truly missed out!

By: dpapabear The weekend of September 10-11 many of the rides and activities across the country were a reminder of the lives lost but not forgotten. This was on everyone’s mind from the tragic events that happened 10 years ago and I would just like to say thanks to all the military members, past and present, as well as the emergency responders for their service so that we can still ride and celebrate freely in this country. One such event was the 4th Annual Sons of AMVETS Veterans Support Poker Run on 09-10-11 to raise funds to benefit the veteran’s needs. The ride started Saturday morning at the AMVETS Post 13 in Lexington, NC, with registration around 12:00 and ride at 1:00. 27 bikes signed up for the ride and poker run. The weather was perfect. The ride consisted of stops from Lexington to Winston-Salem and back to High Rock area and returning to the AMVETS Post. The ride stops were: Dave’s Place, Lexington, Ted’s Famous Chicken in Winston, The Little Bar at Southmont (operated by Aimee Beasley), and The Time Out Hut in Lexington. They held a 50/50 drawing at each stop along the way and the final 50/50 back at the Post. They had numerous door prizes, several items like a 19” TV, a Bob Timberlake print, a flag design throw, and a Budweiser propane grill for auction at end of ride, along with a BBQ dinner cooked up by Rusty Smith, Kenny Mundy, and Jim and Mike. They had cooked the BBQ about 12 hours and it just seemed to melt in your mouth. We would like to say thanks to ALL of the people involved in putting the ride together. Bob Honeycutt was running the door for the registration, Sherri Gobble handled the 50/50 and Angie Barnhill took care of the poker card drawings at each stop, Rick Crawford, for his organization, and others that got donations from several local area businesses, which we really appreciate for their support. If you were one of the winners, please be sure to thank the business when you use their gifts. The 50/50 winners were: Scott Beasley, Kathy Leonard, Jody Pickett, Cheryl (Ms Stump), and Rick Crawford. Rick Crawford was also the winner of the poker hand and the winner of the worst hand (even worse than mine) was Dennis Lanier. A total of $968 was raised. Congrats to all! Please keep all our soldiers and first responders in your hearts for all they do and the great sacrifice that many have given for us. If you were not involved in some event this weekend, keep in mind the date for next year and support one of the many events/ rides for the cause. And anytime you get a chance, please thank a military member for their service. You can check the pictures/events page at www.fullthrottlemagazine. com for pics from this event as well as others. Until next time, stay safe, ride often, and have fun along the way! It’s all about the journey. See ya.

By: Scott Wicker One of the highlights of the 2011 Miles For Mutts - The Road Continues benefit held on Saturday, August 20th, happened when the raffle for the 2011 Harley-Davidson Street Glide took place. The reverse raffle, that only had 300 tickets, kept the crowd at Davis Harley-Davidson in Burlington in suspense until the last ticket was drawn. Deals and offers were being made to the last few remaining ticket holders, which just heightened the suspense and anticipation. When it was all over, Roxanne and Marty Cox had the last ticket, which declared them the winners of the new bike. Through the hard work, the benefit ride, the bike raffle, and the unselfish donations made through the event, the Compassionate Bikers of Alamance County were able to present the Humane Society of Alamance County with a generous donation of $12,250. The Compassionate Bikers of Alamance County cannot thank everyone enough for their participation and generous donations to help support such a worthy cause. They would also like to thank all of the sponsors and to those that volunteered, without whom none of this would have been possible. A great big thank you to the local businesses that worked hard to make sure all the tickets got sold to help the Miles For Mutts, The Road Continues campaign. A special thanks goes out to Kay Teague and Teri Wall of the Compassionate Bikers of Alamance County for all of their hard work! They hope everyone enjoyed the events and they are looking forward to seeing everyone again for The 4th Annual Miles For Mutts Benefit in 2012 for an even bigger and better event! Remember!! Ride Safe!

By: Kathy Johnson On August 20th, Crazy Shots on N. Churton Street in Hillsborough, NC had a bike wash from 11-4, but that was just part of the day’s activities. They also had a casting call for a new reality TV show called Biker Wives. Well, I will start out with the bike wash and that was a no brainer to pay $10 for a bike wash at Crazy Shots! I think some guys were cheap and just enjoyed it when somebody else paid the $10 on their bike and then they sat back and watched the girls wash them. I enjoyed watching the watchers and also noticed a lot of fun was being had with the sponges! In addition to that, a reality show called “Biker Wives” held a casting call at Crazy Shots that day. As you can imagine a lot of girls showed up for the chance to be on the tube. We all know that lots of girls means plenty of men will show up, so, if you were wondering, yes, it was packed. I was not sure what to expect with the casting call but it was fun in many ways. The first thing I noticed when I was checking out some of the people was that some of the girls looked different then they normally do. I figured since it was billed as a “reality” show, you should just be yourself and dress like you always do. First, what they had everyone do to start the process was fill out some paper work. It asked you various things about yourself such as other interests, favorite shows, or movie, etc. After that they divided the prospective starlets into groups of about 5 women and they taped everyone as they asked questions. As for me and my gal pal Ruthie, they actually asked us to stop talking for a while! Anyone that knows us knows that’s a challenge! But they asked us that so that the other women could get a few words in. I will sum it up for you. The producers were fun, nice, direct, and tried to make it somewhat comfortable. It was not like 20 questions from a cop but sitting in that chair under those bright lights made you feel like you were getting asked questions from a cop, if ya know what I mean. All in all, it was a new experience and it was fun. We are not sure who got cast yet, but I am anxious to find out and I will let ya’ll know who the lucky girls are and when you can tune them in as soon as I find out. As for everyone at Crazy Shots they appreciate everyone for stopping out that day. As for me, I will see you there soon.

By: Caroline All over North Carolina, law enforcement holds fundraisers every year for a very worthy cause, Special Olympics. But my favorite is the poker run that the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department holds each August. One of the special aspects of the ride is that it covers every corner of the county. Approximately 100 riders began at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in Winston-Salem, who graciously hosts this event each year. Sheriff Schatzman was on hand to serve as Master Of Ceremonies. This year the riders made stops at Richmond Fire Station and ate lunch at Lewisville-Clemmons fire station. The funds raised in this event goes to help 40,000 registered athletes in North Carolina to compete in 20 different sports all over the world. If you would like to know more about what Special Olympics in North Carolina is like, you can see all about it at www.SpecialOlympics.org or become a fan on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/SpecialOlympics.

The community was eager to see their work and meet the gang, and the turn out was great. With the showing they gave, they gained a lot of new customers and are looking for more. So head down Hwy 109 to 2381 Gumtree Road (at the corner of old Lexington road), between Midway and Wallburg and you will find them rockin’ and wrenchin’. Tell em’ Doc sent you!

By: Jeff Deal On July 28th Asheville lost a true hero in firefighter Captain Jeff Bowen. The husband and a father of three, a thirteen-year veteran with the Asheville Fire Department, was fighting a blaze at a downtown medical building when he was over taken with intense smoke and heat and went into cardiac arrest. Don Gundry, of Mack Kell’s, organized this event to raise money for Bowen’s family. It cost $10 to ride and there were T-shirts, patches, and stickers for sale. Most everyone was carrying at least one, if not all of these items. As bike after bike rolled into the Kearfott Corporation parking lot in Black Mountain, Captain Daren Gillespie was just a little overwhelmed. “We expect the turnout from the Fire Department, and we got it. But the support we’re seeing from the community, I’m in awe”. At 11:15 the bikes roared off from the parking lot at Kearfott Corporation, making the trip to McCormick Field. Families lined the sides of Highway 70 to Asheville, where a ceremony was held to honor Bowen. Also honored at the event was firefighter Jay Bettencourt, who was burned carrying Bowen from the building. The crowd roared when he walked out onto the ball field to accept a plaque. “Jay was one of many who gave so much on July 28,” Fire Chief Scott Burnette said. “Jay placed himself at unbelievable risk to make sure Jeff wasn’t left behind. “Jay carried Jeff through incredibly dangerous conditions and gave everything he had to bring him to safety. After the memorial Mack Kell’s hosted a two-day band jam under a tent in its parking lot with twelve local bands donating their time and talent in support of the Bowen family. A donation of $10 was requested with all donations going to the family. Mack Kell’s also donated 50¢ for each beer and soda sold during the jam.

By: Caroline It’s hard to believe that it has been five years since my friend, James Deal, came up with the Left Behind Sturgis Ride. It started when James was working hard on his fledgling business, Just Hawgs and the long hours he was working did not leave much time for riding. He was definitely missing out when his friends were headed to the beach, across country, as well as to the motorcycle mecca, Sturgis, SD. So, that August in 2007, he half-heartedly, tongue-in-cheek, wondered if there were anyone left that wanted to join him on a ride for a Sunday afternoon. Well, he was surprised at the number of folks who showed up for that first ride that has become so popular. Many of us have been on all the rides, and there are always some new folks that come every year. We all agree that James has developed quite a fan base as he shows us how to appreciate all over again the back-roads and beautiful countryside that we are so blessed to have in our own back yard. This years’ ride had to be postponed until September 11, because of the violent storms that came through in August, but it seemed to work out better this year. We had great weather and ended the ride at Maggie O’Reilly’s. They were good enough to open up and let us eat there and even had a band, “So Glad” that donated their time to play for us. The band was just great and had us all ready to dance and party. For those who felt lucky, poker hands were available to those who wanted to ante up. Buck Hewett won the pot with 3 jacks and Stephanie Gravely had the worst hand. James still has not made it to Sturgis in August due to all of the customers that have kept him busy so he continues to have the Left Behind Sturgis Ride year after year. But, you know what, I can’t think of any group I had rather hang out with when everyone else goes to South Dakota in August. If you want to learn more about the events at Just Hawgs, they will be posted in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar, or if you want to get your bike running great give them a call at 336-595-2210 or stop by at their shop on Highway 311 in Walkertown, NC.

Elk’s 7th Annual Ride And Raffle To Benefit Camp Carefree
By: WildThing Camp Carefree, located in Stokesdale, North Carolina, has provided a free camping experience for children with chronic illnesses since 1986. Their program also includes camps for well siblings of ill children, and a week for children with a sick parent. Camp Carefree hosts approximately 500 kids, mostly from North Carolina and the surrounding states, each summer and offers the recreational and craft activities of a traditional camping program. The main difference involves the populations served and the residence of medical volunteers from UNC Hospitals, Moses Cone Health System, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, and other area health facilities. These teams oversee the proper administration of medications and treatments that many of the campers require, and they closely monitor of the campers’ physical condition. Since this facility is free to the campers, operational funds have to be raised to support it. The motorcycle ride and raffle held on August 27, 2011 was the seventh annual, rain or shine event sponsored by the Greensboro Elks Lodge to help support Camp Carefree. Registration began at 10 am on the day Hurricane Irene was sweeping through the Outer Banks and coastal towns of North Carolina, on her way up the east coast. While the triad weather forecast was only for a 20% chance of rain, apparently lots of folks used it for an excuse to stay at home. It was overcast and pretty windy, but that did not deter the 35 or so riders who came out to go for a motorcycle ride and support the camp. Once registered each rider was given a signature yellow event t-shirt and could purchase raffle tickets and 50/50 tickets while waiting for the kickstands up signal. Due to weather concerns, Steve Barrow and Mike Austin gave stragglers extra time to arrive at the Greensboro Elks Lodge. Finally at noon, the riders’ meeting and prayer over, it was time to put some heat in our engines. The bright green shirted road captains blocked intersections and led the way to the first stop, the High Point Elks Lodge on Old Mill Road. Their youth group, The Antlers, were cheering and waving American flags as we rode in and got parked. The High Point Elks had their grill fired up and hosted a nice lunch of burgers and dogs with all the fixin’s, baked beans, slaw, and
51
chips for the riders. Of course, another opportunity to get raffle and 50/50 tickets was offered after the meal and sweetened by calling out winners of gift certificates to Applebee’s, McAllister’s, and Harris Teeter. After everyone was properly refreshed and had pulled their poker hand card, the call was made to fire up engines, and we were off again. Next stop was Bimini’s in Greensboro. Most of the riders congregated on the outside patio for some cold beverages enjoying the sunshine that finally broke through the clouds to warm us up. More raffle tickets were sold and winners’ tickets pulled for Carolina Café, East Coast Wings, Tripps, and a belly dance class. Since a lot of us were used to coming to this location when it was Plum Krazy’s, it felt like old home week, especially with Mike and Bonnie Austin in the group. This was a two beverage stop, so after the excitement of the ticket pulls, we were off again to our final destination, back at the Greensboro Elks Lodge. We all pulled our last cards, settled in at the bar and waited for the dinner bell. They had delicious BBQ and fixin’s waiting for us. After supper, Steve took up the mic and thanked us all for participating despite the weather and announced the poker hand winners. Then he started pulling raffle tickets and the winners could choose from the treasure trove laid out on tables along the wall. There were t-shirts, goodie bags, camp chairs, coolers and all kinds of really neat stuff that the Elk members got donated from local individuals and businesses, all to support Camp Carefree. The big items were given away last and included a 32” flat screen TV and a sideboard and mirror, not to mention lots more gift certificates. The 50/50 netted the lucky winner $135. Steve Clarke, an Elks officer, reported that $2,000, which was down this year probably because of the weather, was raised for Camp Carefree through this motorcycle run. The Greensboro Elks Lodge was planning a charity ball to supplement this effort, because in past years the Elks were able to give between $10 and 15,000 to the camp. Steve and Debbie Barrow did a fantastic job again this year organizing the poker run and just really running the show. Thanks also for Mike and Bonnie Austin for their able assistance in making this run safe and successful.

ing and havoc up the east coast including NC’s Outer Banks and beaches. Good thing we live in the Piedmont! In Greensboro the skies were gloomy and there was a steady breeze, but it was a great break from the 90º heat we had been experiencing. It was also a great day to enjoy Greensboro H-D’s hospitality at their Customer Appreciation Pancake Breakfast And Bluegrass Day! They started the day off with a complimentary pancake breakfast! Buffalo Wings & Rings and the staff of Greensboro H-D hit the griddle to get pancakes to those who came out to the event and some lucky folks who happened to be getting their bike serviced that morning. Many riders came by the dealership to take demo rides and Rolling Thunder NC CH 6 hosted their state picnic that afternoon. It was the start of a busy day! The Bluegrass Day started up at 12pm on the stage in the Motorcycle Park right beside the dealership. The Steel Horse Saloon threw up the garage doors to accommodate any thirsty patrons while they enjoyed the tunes. Leading off the day was Buffalo Road then Dusty Ridge was pick’n on stage. The H.O.G.s Were Flyin’ High In Hickory
By: Alan Dockery The middle of August we were Flyin’ High in Hickory, NC, for the 2011 North Carolina State H.O.G. Rally. By Thursday the more than 700 people pre-registered for the rally started rolling into town. Folks came from as far away as New York and Texas. “The State Rallies are designed to bring members and their families together in a festival atmosphere to experience and celebrate the H.O.G. lifestyle,” said Doug McClew, H.O.G. Rally Coordinator. “We did that in a big way in Hickory! I had the best rally I have ever been associated with. The venue was great. The hotels, convention center and Blue Ridge HarleyDavidson were within walking distance of each other. That helped make it a perfect place for a successful and safe rally.” “With the support of the City of Hickory, Hickory Airport, the Hickory Metro Convention Center and Visitors Bureau, the 2011 NC State H.O.G. Rally Committee and Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson began planning the Rally early in the year. There was one goal: this would be one rally to remember!” said Chris O’Connor, General Manager of Blue Ridge H-D. Since I’m from Hickory, I was glad to see how the city welcomed the H.O.G. Rally. Mayor Rudy Wright, who rides a Harley, was there for the ceremonies and I saw him at one of the rides, too. The rally started Thursday with a patriotic opening ceremony where more than $2,000 in prizes were given away. Each day of the rally, hundreds of local riders descended on the convention center, Blue Ridge H-D, and the vendor field. The late afternoon rain showers hardly dampened the bikers’ spirits, either. Once the rain passed, we were back to partying to the sounds cranked out by DJ “Wild Bill” Sarrubbo. Walking wine tours and poker walks through the vendor field were a hit for the attendees. The Catawba Valley H.O.G. Chapter Road Captains led rides through the beautiful foothills and local countryside. Friday one ride went to FireFly Balloons in Statesville, NC, for a tour and demonstration of hot air balloon manufacturing. Some bikers even got to ride in a balloon. Women’s activities included how to pack for a motorcycle trip and how to construct a pin banner with all those pins that didn’t get on your vest. We also got in both qualifying rounds of the Olympic Motorcycle Field Games. Saturday started with a Life Member Breakfast and police escorted ride to the Hickory Airport. First riders posed with their bikes for a picture in front of one of the last F-14 Tomcat fighter jets. Then folks had the opportunity to ride down the airport runway – “just short of take off speed”. Yes, they lined us up four-wide and let us run wide open down about a quarter mile of runway. Trish was holding on and trying to shot photos from the back seat at about 100 miles per hour. Folks also could visit the Hickory Aviation Museum and some took a plane ride, too. That afternoon there was a big crowd all over the rally site. Lots of us gathered next to Blue Ridge H-D for the Olympic Motorcycle Field Games finals. The rally ended with an excit-
ing closing ceremony where more than $10,000 in awards and prizes given away. Dinner was provided by Liazzo’s and attendees danced to music provided by the famous “Right Turn Clyde Band” until late in the evening. Quoting some of the emails to Blue Ridge H-D, “It was a great experience as a vendor. Harley riders are the best!” And from an attendee, “BRH-D is an awesome dealership. Even with all the people, ya’ll took the time to help with questions and even walked you over to what you’re looking for.” One sums it up with, “We came, we saw, we partied and thanks to the NC State H.O.G. Committee and Blue Ridge H-D for a fantastic Rally”. Visit www.FullThrottleMagazine.com for more H.O.G. Rally photos.

By: Caroline Many times bikers are called upon to support causes because of their generous nature. However, it was evident that the driving force behind this event is the parents of five-year-old Mayson, who are facing unimaginable battles. One could tell that the huge turnout and support was the result of a lot of hard work by a Mom and Dad who urgently needed help on behalf of their child. Mayson has malignant brain tumors (neurofibromatosis) that are attached to both eyes. Chemotherapy can be done but only when the eyesight is compromised. Even then, it could result in leukemia for Mayson. On Saturday, August 20, we started the ride at Maggie O’Riley’s Irish Pub on University Parkway in Winston-Salem, traveled through Yadkin, Surry and Stokes counties. The ride ended back at Maggie’s, for a meal of barbeque, and prize drawings. I took a look beforehand at a very impressive array of items for the silent auction. It was obvious that a lot of hard work went into gathering all these items. Later on, bands “Just Killin Time” and “High Shot” entertained the folks. The only request that little Mayson had that day was to sit on a yellow bike and he wanted some M&M’s. If only all our wishes were so simple! Well, both wishes were easily fulfilled. I am sure though, that there will be more needs for this family in the way of funds, and prayers since insurance does not cover all the expenses and prayers will be needed daily. You can call Lisa Schumacher at (336) 231-1936 or email at maysonsride@yahoo.com if you wish to help out in this very worthy cause.

BFBF Goes To Virginia
By: Jeanie Hood - Carter Most people are aware of the Bikers For Bikers Foundation in the Carolinas and that we have members in most states. We are now signing up a State Captain in each state to help with the fund raising and we are getting many applications throughout the US. A few months back a biker/pastor inquired about the possibilities of becoming a State Captain and what it would require. He had researched our foundation and wanted to help. Pastor Scott “Gabby” Carter, of Staunton, VA, President of Wings of Hope, another nonprofit, would be holding a fundraiser on Sept. 03 at the Shenandoah Harley-Davidson. He invited Mickey and I to attend and represent BFBF. Being the road hog I am and with both of us having the foundation in our hearts, what can I say. We pulled out for the mountains and Shenandoah Valley on Friday about noon. Mickey has a thing for GPS and you know how that goes! Personally, I like maps. Needless to say the GPS took us about 100 miles out of the way, but it was all good. We got see parts of NC & VA that I had never seen before. As usual, the storms came out of the mountains on three occasions. They were great and refreshing. At one point the wind was blowing so hard we thought it was hailing but it turned out to be debris blowing out of the trees and off the hillsides. Stuff was hitting the cage like marbles flying out of the sky. On Saturday morning we ate breakfast and were setting up by 8:30am. As soon as we got to Shenandoah H-D we met Gabby. He was like a bee buzzing around getting things done and there were kids everywhere. Everyone, including the kids, came over and helped us set up. It was amazing. You didn’t even have to tell the kids what to do; they just did it and were full of smiles and truly happy to help. This was my first Christian motorcycle family event and I have been to events from the Midwest across the Eastern states and around the Gulf. After noticing how helpful and full of warm welcomes everyone was, the thing that caught my attention was how happy everyone was and how well mannered the children were. A few teased me about my Texas country accent and agreed I was a flatland hillbilly! By 10am the bikes were pulling in and out, registering for the bike show and poker run. The bands were setting up and starting to play some of the best Christian rock I had ever heard and the food was on. The smell of bar-b-q filled the air. There were people dancing and people steadily coming and going. There were show trucks, show cars, every kind of bike, and some of the friendliest bikers I have ever met. Things were moving along and out of the sky came a huge black cloud and the wind picked up so fast that the canopies started moving across the parking lot as if they were dancing with the people. The band stopped, the vocalist said a short prayer and asked the Big Man upstairs to move the storm to the east of us while everyone attending grabbed people’s canopies and held them steady. It was truly amazing! The storm moved to the east and in a short time the wind laid and not one
drop of rain fell on us! The band started back up as if nothing had happened. One of the bands, Covenant, had 2 female vocalists and one of them could flat hammer the electric guitar. I had never gotten into Christian rock music. I was raised a little old fashioned in that sense, but these bands could move a rock! They blasted the hillsides and the crowd. It is usual these days to see a large number of Motorcycle Missionaries at events, but I have never seen a larger variety of Christian motorcyclist anywhere else. We signed a large number of new members and made money to help those in need. Wings of Hope supports three nonprofit organizations with BFBF being the newest one. We are happy to have their support and even happier to have Gabby as VA State Captain. We tore down at 6pm and hit the road back to NC on the route we had intended to take going up. If you haven’t traveled the old Hwy 29 through the Shenandoah Valley you are missing a great ride! Beware, it is like the dragon’s tail through vineyard country with some of the prettiest scenery a person can soak in and the people are warm, friendly, and have that true Virginia hillbilly accent you gotta love.

Ray Price Racing - Two Wins In A Row
Ray Price Racing Wins at Second NHRA Nitro Harley Exhibition Race
Grimes beats Sternotti in Nitro Harley s how down at Pacific Raceways Another NHRA event. Another win. There seems to be a pattern here. Whenever the Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Akea sponsored drag bike performs at a NHRA event the team has gone to the winners circle. When asked to participate as part of the Nitro Harley Exhibition Race at the NHRA Lucas Oil Racing Series Division 6 Points Race at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington, it didn’t take but a minute for Ray Price to say yes. After a win at Bristol Dragway back in June for the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals the team saw this as another chance to make it two in a row. “I don’t think its pure coincidence that we run well at NHRA events. With such good track conditions we can tune the bike to run fast. That’s what it likes.” remarked Price. Qualifying for the field of seven Top Fuel Harleys took place on Friday under ideal conditions. In the first round Grimes came out flying with a 6.386 ET at 229.47 mph. After spinning the tire in the second round, Grimes stepped it up in the third by running a 6.349 ET at 230.96 mph to capture the number two qualifying spot. Coming off strong qualifying runs the Ray Price HarleyDavidson / Akea race team was confident going into Saturday’s eliminations. With the 1,000 horsepower V-Twin motor tuned for a first round win Grimes twisted the throttle and posted a 6.401 ET at 230.96 mph to move into the next round. In the semi finals Grimes ran a 6.554 ET at 198.03 mph to move the team into the finals. As fate would have it Grimes faced Joey Sternotti who piloted the drag bike for Ray Price Racing in 2010. Grimes wasn’t going to give Sternotti bragging rights and made sure of it by blasting to a first place finish with an incredible 6.260 ET at 229.59 mph. “The Akea Express ran so strong and going to the winners circle was very satisfying for the whole team.,” said Ray Price. Ray Price Racing Wins Again Team gets another win. This time at AHDRA Northwest Nationals at Woodburn, Oregon Coming off the big win at the Nitro Harley Exhibition Race at the NHRA Lucas Oil Racing Series event the Ray Price HarleyDavidson / Akea sponsored race team used the momentum to capurted another win at the AHDRA Northwest Nitro Nationals at Woodburn Dragstrip this past weekend. “The whole crew should be proud of their efforts to get this team to the winners circle. We have always struggled at Woodburn but this year things finally turned in our favor.” remarked Price. With local Top Fuel Nitro Harley racer Steve Dorn in the spotlight at his home track the Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Akea race team quietly went about their business to masterley prepare the Akea Express. The teams efforts paid off during Saturday qualifying. In the first round Grimes put down a solid 6.524 ET at 217.97 MPH then continued to improved in the second round by posting a 6.515 ET at 226.01 MPH. After the final round of qualifying the team was qualified in the number
57
three position and ready for Sunday’s eliminations. During the first round of elimination on Sunday Grimes confidently moved the team into the next round by running a 6.572 ET at 219.24 MPH. In what proved to be a real close drag race in semi final round action Grimes came out the victor by crossing the finish line first with a 6.610 ET at 215.46 MPH to his opponents 6.645 ET. The fans wished for and got a storybook ending with Dorn versus Grimes in the finals. Grimes grabbed the early lead with a quick start off the tree and never looked back running a 6.627 ET at 222.11 MPH to Dorn’s 6.716 ET to cross the finish line first and capture the teams second win in as many races. “The drag bike ran so consistent all weekend and to be in the winners circle two weekends in a row is just great.” said Ray Price. The Ray Price Motorsports team sends sincere thanks to all their sponsors for their support for the 2011 race season. They include our Primary Sponsors: Akea, Ray Price HarleyDavidson, with special thanks to our Associate Sponsor Raleigh H. O. Bros & Bro-ettes
Jesus Freaks For those of you that are planning on playing dress up for Halloween this year, I’ve got some suggestions for you - some dos and some dont’s. First of all, DON’T anyone else dress up as a biker. We have way more than enough of those already! Amazing what side effects of stupidity a leather vest can cause! Next, DON’T dress up as a Bro-ette unless you know what the term means. Only the real ole ladies will understand this! DON’T dress your bike up as a Harley. We know the difference and promise to tell everyone! It will never have Hog Breath if it doesn’t have a Hog Heart! Just be proud of what ya got and ride it. DO wear a lot of makeup if you’re ugly. If you are not sure, ask the mirror. It never lies! Sometimes something is needed to “makeup” for what’s missing! Men, these neoprene facemasks work very well for you. DO plan on being seen by everyone and also plan on being judged by what you have dressed up as. Everyone has an opinion and, sooner or later, you will hear what they think. Also, DON’T anyone else dress up as a Christian. We have enough of that going on every Sunday! Sad how many play dress up with God as if He is impressed. But DO be a real “Jesus Freak.” Not ashamed, not fake, not playing some foolish religious game, not playing dress up; but
standing up and speaking out for what is real and everlasting! DO Pray the Biker’s Prayer on this page, mean it in your heart as you pray it out loud, and know the realness of Salvation. Jesus wasn’t playing dress up on that cross. It was real for me and you! Now come on “Jesus Freaks” let’s go scare the Hell out of everybody!

Brelan’s Ride Poker Run & Rally
By: Sunshine On Saturday, August 20th, I met my ride & couple of others, including the owners, Larry & Dawn at D’ McGeary’s Sports Tavern in King, NC. From there we went to Sagebrush Steak House in Mount Airy, NC, where the ride was starting. After getting registered and receiving a free Brelan’s Ride t-shirt, I met with Becky Jessup, my contact for the ride. Becky shared with me little Brelan’s story. Brelan is a 17-month-old baby girl, from Surry County and is battling a type of Kidney Cancer. She currently is undergoing treatments at Brenner Children’s Hospital in WinstonSalem, NC. In February of this year she had her left kidney removed and started chemotherapy treatments. A couple of weeks ago she had to return to her doctor for her scan. The scan came back showing a couple of spots on her liver and the cancer is also in her lymph nodes. After meeting with Becky, I got to meet the main reason for the ride, little Brelan. She was so pretty and stole my heart from the moment I met her. I spent a few minutes with her before the ride started, taking some photos and meeting her parents. What a sweet little angel she was. With little Brelan waving to the bikers, it was then time for the ride to start. With clear blues skies and help from Mount Airy Police, 47 register bikers started the ride. The ride covered 100+ miles of scenic countryside through several counties, including Stokes, Yadkin, Forsyth, and Surry Counties. One of our stops was at Tommy Garner’s Store, in Yadkin County. There I found a treasure chest of antiques that ranged from an old drink box, to a pay phone that had 10 cents on it and lot’s of other very interesting items of history. After the poker hands where played, we set out on the last part of our ride, to Cooper’s Sports Bar, in Pilot Mountain, NC. There, hot dogs and other food where provided for us. While we all ate, we were entertained by Cory Heart and The Bounty Hunters. They were awesome too! After enjoying some great food and music, there was an auction with lots of great items donated by several sponsors, such as Wal-Mart, Subway, Advance Auto Parts, and many, many more. Also a 50/50 and door prizes where awarded. Every one was having a great time. I also got to spend some more time taking photos of little Brelan and her family. Becky Jessup also shared with me more about little Brelan, “At this point the medical bills have reached above $48,000 and that is after insurance has paid their part”. The ride raised over $2,500 for little Brelan and donations are still being accepted. If you would like to make a donation to little Brelan, You may do this by PayPal. The email address to send your donations to is: Breta_Staney@yahoo.com or contact Becky Jessup at: (336) 415-1312 or JessupB2007@yahoo.com. Also, T-shirts are still available for $6. The family would like to thank Becky Jessup, Dawn Holyfield, Beth Harper, Mike Bryant, Adam Holyfield, and Allan Tilley who helped in setting up the ride. Also they wish to thank all the sponsors and everyone that showed up for the
ride, including all that were at all the stops along the way, for helping a sweet little angel, named Brelan Belcher. I, personally, would like to thank all for their support and hope you will keep this little angel in your prayers and continue in helping little Brelan. No child should ever have to suffer from such an awful thing. Please support all the organization & foundations that help with childhood cancer so little angels like Brelan can get the medical and support they need. I had a great time and enjoyed the ride and meeting all the wonderful people that came out. Thank you all for an amazing day!

Ruby Bash 2011 By: Anchor Going to anything that includes bikers and friends is always a good thing for us to get out and play for the day. Everyone knows when you get to go to the “playground” you don’t worry about anything but what you’re going to eat and do (LOL) or at least that’s what I think! The day started off very nice. We pulled up about 9 am and set up a booth and started handing out magazines to other vendors and enjoying visiting with some of our friends. Bikes started to pull in about 9:30 to go on the 80-mile poker run. When the ride started about 30 bikes rode for the benefit. The winner of the run was Mr. Swaford and he donated his $100 winnings back to R.E.A.C.H.. They had about 90 to 100 bikes show up for the event. The gate fee for adults was $10 and 18 and under were free. The raffles were great and had awesome donations from different area business to help raise money for R.E.A.C.H. of Macon County which is a domestic violence and rape crisis center headquartered in Franklin, NC. R.E.A.C.H. is an acronym for Resources, Education, Assistance, Counseling, and Housing and is dedicated to helping families from domestic violence and educating the public on the avenues of prevention. They also raised money through the sale of event T-shirts for sale. The trophies were hand made by the event organizer. They had an engraved plate mounted on a beautiful oak board with an actual ruby mounted on both sides of the plate. The food

vendors had some great food that kept people in line wanting more. A DJ played good music through out the day and when the battle of the bands started everyone sat around listening to the music from three different groups. The day was full of different activities to help people stay at the event and over all I know that R.E.A.C.H. of Macon County will be happy with how the event turned out. If you would like to help R.E.A.C.H. of Macon County please donate to: R.E.A.C.H. of Macon County, PO Box 228, Franklin, NC 22784.

By: John M. Vaudo August 20th started out as a foggy overcast Saturday, but it did not dampen the spirits of Heaven Bound Custom Car Club. They were on a mission to help the Edgecombe County Military Veterans Museum raise some much needed money for renovations of the Museum and old Colonial Theater behind it. The morning started off a little slow but before the Tarboro High Air Force Jr. ROTC Honor Guard officially opened the even at about noon the parking lots were nearly full of cars, trucks and Motorcycles. There were even a couple of motorized bicycles in the show. Biker Style Deals was on hand to sell there motorcycle accessories, Resurrection Riders were present to share the word, there were a couple of food vendors on hand to fill the hollow spots in folks stomachs. The ECVM and American Legion had a booth and there was a woman there to help entertain the kids with animal balloons. Cars and trucks ranged in age and vintage, from the 1920’s up to 2011 Camaros and Ponies. The bikes were the same from a beautifully decked out 1941 Knuckle to 2011 Harley Ultra. The winners in the Motorcycle class were 1st place Dennis Coker with a Harley Ultra, Luther Knight 2nd Place also with a Harley and Charlie Staton 3rd Place with a Yamaha Road Star. For the Cages Best import went to Gregory Godwin, Best Ford to Keith Shevlin, Best Mopar was taken by Brenda Harris, Best GM Truck was had by Donnie Lancaster and Best GM car by Billy Ray Vick. Best in Show was such a hard call but it was finally decided that Daniel Richardson had the best looking vehicle there. Heaven Bound Customs Cody Warren took home the Mascot trophy, which was about as big as he was. All in all a very positive day, The American Legion gained 2 new members, the Museum raised about $1000 and had a couple of hundred visitors it doesn’t usually get. According to Ellis Cullipher of the Museum’s Board of Directors, there were 52 cars entered and 11 bikes. He said he heard nothing but good things at the show. You can visit the Museum located at 106 W Church St Tarboro NC, Thurs-Sat from 10am to 4 pm, and visit their website at http://www.edgecombevet. com/ See all the pictures at http://www.facebook.com/pages/ Eason-Tiney-American-Legion-Post-19/162923017092480

10th Annual Calvin E. Taylor Memorial Toy Ride
By: Jeff Deal This year was the 10th Annual Calvin E. Taylor Memorial Toy Ride to benefit NC Masonic Home for Children and the Calvin Taylor Scholarship Foundation. The WNC Troopers of the NC State Highway Patrol will use toys donated, for kids in stressful situations. Over 150 bikes who made a $10 cash donation or brought a new toy rode into The Stompin’ Ground in Maggie Valley from Lowe’s In Asheville, Roses in Sylva, and TRL Motorsports in Waynesville. After the ride there was food and drinks to go along with Ottis And The Boys playing music favorites inside the Stomping Grounds. Gene Canter and The Masons of Western North Carolina do a great job with this ride every year. The fact that it finishes up so close to the fair grounds during Thunder In The Smokies fall rally makes it a full day for most riders.

By: Kathy Johnson On August 18th Crazy Shots in Hillsborough, NC had their bike night! The difference on this bike night was that Tiny, the owner of Crazy Shots, was picking one bike that would win best in show and that lucky winner would receive a hand made Widow Maker Custom Design and Repair trophy. The reason I say that is it was not the standard trophy. You know what I’m talking about - the ones with the cheap looking gold bike on top. This was a one of a kind trophy built out of bike parts. The winner of the trophy was Michael Plane out of China Grove he pulled up on a custom low ride. I might add that it had a nice hammered tank and it was worthy of the trophy. So next time, remember to check out the Thursday night bike night at Crazy Shots. You might get a one of a kind trophy to compliment your bike. Then you will have two things that you will really want to brag about. CAR HAULERS Starting @ $4390.00

Riders’ Roost Luau Party
Story and photo by Alan Dockery Labor Day Weekend was beautiful with great weather for an End of Summer Luau at Riders’ Roost, Ferguson, NC. Friday afternoon it was clear this was going to be the biggest Roost party of the year. When I rolled in the area where my buddies camp, The Backyard, was almost full. By dark the pavilion was packed and we sang and danced until late in the night. Saturday afternoon the place was packed with tents and bikes and people enjoying the mountains and each other’s company. Not only was the weather great for a few days in the mountains, but there were two other reasons so many people were
65
at the Roost. That night they were drawing the winning name of the Shovelhead Red Chopper that was being raffled by Riders’ Roost Charities. I won’t keep you in suspense; the bike now belongs to Danny Hanood of Greensboro, NC. The other reason was the loss of a good friend and well-known Rooster, Nelson Clark. Saturday morning a bunch of us took off on a memorial ride down to Nelson’s favorite bar in Hickory for lunch. Nelson didn’t really drink alcohol, so there was his favorite drink, Diet Coke, on his regular table and a tombstone in his parking spot. We meandered our way back to the Roost along the roads he took to the mountains. Once back at camp it was hot and time for a refreshing swim in the creek. Later that afternoon we held a large memorial service at the pavilion. Several folks got up to tell stories about Nelson that made us laugh and cry. After a supper of tasty BBQ chicken, thanks a bunch Stump for cooking, we started partying. Once the band cranked it up we moved to the dance floor to juke late into the night. Sunday was Luau Day with a bunch of Boston butts being cooked in the ground. Folks relaxed around the Roost and chilled out in the creek until supper. Man was it a good spread with dirt roasted pig and lots of fixins. That night the remaining folks got down luau style. There are still a few parties planned for Riders’ Roost so check the schedule and head to the mountains with us. Visit www.FullThrottleMagazine.com for more photos

By: Jeff Deal On September 1st the Carolina Faith Riders and Rodney’s Auto Service in Weaverville, NC held a cook out and ride to raise money for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, to help cover the cost of transporting The Wall That Heals, a ½ scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, here to Western North Carolina. The traveling exhibit, hosted by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 124, features a museum and information center that was displayed at HarleyDavidson of Asheville from September 22nd-25th. They raised over $1000 through donations. The band Sanctum Sully played, and anyone in downtown Weaverville was welcome to have hamburgers and hotdogs with all the fixings for just a donation. There was a 50/50 drawing with the winnings totaling over $100+, but the winner just donated the money back to the cause. Before the evening was over they had fed about 250 people. They held these types of events on Thursday nights through out the summer. I was lucky enough to get there early, as there wasn’t a parking space left in town and people were still coming in when I left. Rock 104 was there taking pictures for their web site and it seemed like the whole population of a very small town enjoyed themselves. If you didn’t get a chance to see The Wall That Heals it will be traveling thru early December. Visit their website: www.vvmf.org/twth for dates and locations.

Respect Should Go Both Ways!
By: Tammy Brown and Renea Clutts I don’t know how many of you are sick and tired of showing our law enforcement respect and in return we are NOT shown it back. It has always bothered me but it never infuriated me until September 5, 2011 when family and friends set out to pay their respects to Eddie Windham. Eddie was a husband, father, friend, employer and a long time biker. He passed away suddenly at his home, which, undoubtedly, shocked everyone. While making the arrangements, his family requested that anyone who was a rider to please ride their motorcycle on one final ride with him. They all knew that Eddie would really love this. Even with the day being rainy, 25 bikes showed up to show Eddie and his family how much they cared. I have been in several funeral processions where the bikers did not wear a helmet. I believe it has always been “assumed” that if it was a police escorted ride then helmets were not required. Well, let me tell you that this is NOT the case. The funeral home had State Highway Trooper Timothy V. Trollinger working part time for them and he felt that it was necessary to inform his agency that there were a group of bikes leaving and some of them were not wearing helmets. Apparently there was a license check already set up by NC SHP officers Miller and Baker prior to the funeral so they decided to extend this check. When the funeral procession reached them they allowed the escorting sheriff car, family cars, hearse, and the first 6 bikes (that had helmets on) through. The first two of these bikes were Eddie’s son’s James and Bryan and his girlfriend, Cortney. Keep in mind that these two were trying to honor their father and have ONE LAST RIDE with him! Instead, they got to see members of the motorcycle portion of the procession being pulled over in their rear view mirrors and were left only to wonder what was going to happen with them. Once the bikers that did NOT have helmets on, which happened to be some of the pallbearers, reached the SHP, they were directed into a church parking lot where another Trooper and a local Walnut Cove Police officer were waiting. The riders were formed into two lines and the ticket writing began. Yes, you heard it right! They pulled riders OUT OF A FUNERAL PROCESSION and wrote them tickets. The Walnut Cove Police officer, Freddie Neal, never even got out of his car. We were later told that he was only there to “assist” the SHP. After approximately 25 - 30 minutes, the pallbearers and other friends were allowed to leave and proceed to the funeral. Needless to say, the pallbearers did not reach the graveside in time to carry their friend to his final resting place. Can you imagine the hurt and disappointment that, not only the pallbearers felt, but also more importantly, the family felt? They had specifically chosen these men as pallbearers. No one can convince me that if this local police officer or any other person that knew this was going to happen would have just said, “Let’s just have them put their helmets on and let them go” that the SHP would not have done so! Instead
they just sat back and let this happen to a person from their OWN community that had passed away. This was completely uncalled for! They certainly do not mind taking the bikers money when it benefits one of their own. For instance, the Trooper Shawn Blanton ride happens EVERY year and the proceeds benefit a scholarship fund in his name. Now don’t get me wrong, what happened to him was terrible, but you cannot tell me that if there were riders in this escorted ride that did not have a helmet on that the Troopers wouldn’t interrupt the ride, but rather say, “You need to put your helmet on and then catch up with the ride”. I think that this family deserved the SAME courtesy! It amazes me how this thing they call “respect” seems to only work one way and we are just suppose to sit back and take it. Well, this group is NOT taking it. We have called the DA’s office, the NC SHP’s office, written the town manager, and that’s just to name a few. I must say that the Walnut Cove Town Manager, Homer Dearmin, has done a great job trying to rectify this situation. He has sent letters to the DA’s office as well as the SHP and the group that received tickets received a letter in the mail on September 10th that stated their tickets were DISMISSED and they did not need to appear in court on October 21st. However, the local police, as well as the officer who was blocking the intersection, have pointed fingers and even stated that they “warned” the bikers before they left. Well, I was one of those bikes and NO warning like this EVER took place. This family can never get that day back. These public servants who are suppose to be “protecting us” need to learn some compassion and how to show respect back! This was completely uncalled for and if the SHP felt that they needed to “enforce the law” then they could have done it with more respect and only delayed the riders long enough to put a helmet on! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! This family deserves a WRITTEN apology from the SHP and the Walnut Cove Police department. These two law enforcement agencies need to finally step up and do the right thing. I urge everyone to stand up for yourselves and do not just TAKE whatever they dish out. Respect should go BOTH ways.

The police arrested Patrick Lawrence, 22 year old white male, in a pumpkin patch 12.01 a.m. on Friday. On Monday, at the county courthouse, Lawrence was charged with lewd and lascivious behavior, public indecency, and public intoxication. The suspect explained that as he was passing a pumpkin patch on his way home from a drinking session when he decided to stop. At his Preliminary Hearing he explained, “You know how a pumpkin is soft and squishy inside, and there was no one around for miles or at least I thought there wasn’t anyone around.” Lawrence went on to say that he pulled over to the side of the road, picked out a pumpkin that he felt was appropriate to his purpose, cut a hole in it, and proceeded to satisfy his alleged need. “Guess I was really into it, you know?” he commented with evident embarrassment. In the process of doing the deed, Lawrence failed to notice an approaching Sheriff’s Deputy car and was unaware of his audience until Deputy Brenda Taylor approached him. “It was an unusual situation, that’s for sure,” Deputy Taylor testified. “I walked up to Lawrence and he’s just banging away at this pumpkin.” Deputy Taylor went on to describe what happened when she approached Lawrence. “I said, “Excuse me sir, but do you realize that you’re having sex with a pumpkin?” He froze and was clearly very surprised that I was there, and then he looked me straight in the face and said, ”A pumpkin? S%!t Is it midnight already?” An Arizona Department of Safety Officer pulled over a little old lady from West Virginia for a faulty taillight. When the officer approached the driver, she handed the officer her driver’s license, insurance card, and Concealed Carry Permit. The officer took all the documents, looked them over and said. “Mrs. Smith, I see you have a CCP. Do you have any weapons with you? “The little old lady replied, “Yes sir, I have a .357 handgun in a hip holster, a .45 in the glove box, and a .22 derringer in my boot.” The officer looked at her and asked, “Anything else?” “Yes sir, I have a Mossberg 500 12-gauge and an AR-15
in the trunk.” The officer asked if she was driving to or from a shooting range and the little old lady said she wasn’t, so the officer bent over and looked into the her face and said, “Mrs. Smith, you’re carrying quite a few guns. May I ask what you are afraid of?” The little old lady locked eyes with the officer and calmly answered, “Not a damn thing!”

Freedom Fest 2011
By: Pedro “It’s a great day to be a biker” was the main thought on my mind as I motored down Hwy 17S to beautiful Wilmington, NC. Temps in the mid-eighties, plenty of sunshine, and beautiful Carolina blue skies had me humming a little tune as I rolled into the Port City. Or maybe my good mood was because I had the privilege of covering the Freedom Fest Bike Show and Bikini Bike Wash at the Crazy Horse? Perfect riding weather, hot bikes, cool people, and of course, sexy ladies… Hey, it’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it. Special thanks to Jerry Reid, owner of Crazy Horse and gracious host of Freedom Fest, which had an even more special meaning this year, falling a day before the 10th anniversary of 9/11. In addition, proceeds from the prize raffle went to Duke’s Children’s Miracle Network, a worthy charity, indeed. There were some pretty sweet prizes up for grabs, all donated by local merchants. All of the staff were super hospitable and friendly, and the accommodations were well worth the ride. A covered show area was located just outside the front doors of the club, complete with DJ and plenty of sexy ladies mingling about. There were some pretty hot bikes out there as well, with sixteen entries in the show. There were a couple of vendors set up, coverage by a local radio station, and even a visit from the ice cream truck. Oh yeah, did I mention the sexy ladies?
Speaking of such, heavenly Hannah was taking care of business at the inside bar, serving up cold drinks with the biggest… ummm…smile you’ve ever seen. The feature entertainer for the night, Ms Christina Aguchi, performed on the main stage for a couple of tunes, a hot preview of what the Crazy Horse had in store for later in the evening. After a little distraction by the ladies, it was back outside to the bikes and the results of the judging. Here are your show winners for the 2011 Freedom Fest: METRIC MODIFIED: 1st Place - Marcus Barnhill, 2nd Place - Andrew Partia, 3rd Place - 47Cycles; METRIC STOCK: 1st Place - Ken Jahna, 2nd Place - James “Pedro” Penuel; BOBBER: 1st Place - 47Cycles, 2nd Place - 47Cycles; SPORTSTER: 1st Place - Barry Arnettte, 2nd Place - John Robinson; TOURING: 1st Place - Will Sanders, 2nd Place - Bob McIrney; BIG TWIN: 1st Place - Chuck Stewart; SPORTBIKE: 1st Place - Cocy Gower, 2nd Place - Matt Pierce, 3rd Place - Derek Gill; LADIES: 1st Place - Lauren Taylor. If you missed this event, you missed out on a great time with great people. Mark your calendars next year and see what I’m talking about. You can count on seeing me there again next year. Check out additional pics of this event online at www. fullthrottlemagazine.com and see what’s going on at Crazy Horse by checking out www.puregoldclubs.com. Until then, enjoy the ride!
