America has had many defining moments. I was not yet born when President Franklin D. Roosevelt told the nation about the attack on Pearl Harbor. Addressing a Joint Session of Congress on December 8, 1941, he said that the prior day was “a date which will live in infamy”. Within an hour, Congress passed a formal declaration of war against Japan and officially brought the US into World War II. The address is regarded as one of the most famous American political speeches of the 20th century. Life Magazine’s cover shot of Alfred Eisenstaedt’s “V-J Day in Times Square”, a picture of a sailor kissing a nurse at the end of WWII in 1945 is known as “The Kiss Seen Round The World” and is considered a defining image of the century. It signified, then and to this day, that the war was over. I still was not born, but I am aware of the image and it’s signifigance. I remember looking out the window of shop class in high school and listening intently as the media announced that President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated over the school PA system in November of 1963. The image of John Kennedy Jr. saluting the caisson as it passed by on his 3rd birthday is also an image that many remember with significant meaning. The Warren Commission Report, a 10-month investigation, was initially sealed for 75 years, but the picture, even though John Jr. is now passed away, lives on. As technology improved, so did the media coverage of events that made history. Who can erase the images of the Space Shuttle Challenger as it broke apart just 73 seconds after launch in January of 1986? This year, 10 years later, we remember the horror of September 11, 2001. For many of us, the memories are still very vivid if you pause to remember. I remember EXACTLY where I was when I saw the images of the first World Trade Center building billowing smoke. I stood and watched in disbelief as the second plane crashed into the other tower. The news reported a third plane crashing into the Pentagon Building and yet another, believed to be aimed at the White House or the Capitol Building, which crashed in a field in Shanksville, PA after passengers thwarted that plan. It was un nerving to say the least. I am sure that I am not alone when I say that I wondered what was next. As the news coverage continued, it became clear that this was most likely the worst attack on America in history. I urge you to get out and participate in some of the remembrance runs and ceremonies that will commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9-11 this month. I also encourage you to Google 9-11 or go to YouTube and watch some of the video of the tragic events of that day. It is important that we do this so that we never forget. That is why there are memorials at the Pentagon, the World Trade Center, and the Flight 93 National Memorial. We must always remember. God Bless America! Harley’s Heroes wear ear protection. At the very least, I hoped to be able to get him a hearing aid as they are very expensive and not covered by his insurance or Medicare. I finally talked my Dad in going to talk to the folks from the Disabled American Veterans who were at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson that day helping folks to find out what benefits they are entitled to. Not only did we find out that my Dad could probably get a hearing aid, he might be eligible for compensation. These folks with the DAV were very helpful, and walked us through the whole process. We also found out that Dad could go to the VA outpatient clinic in Winston-Salem and get his diabetic supplies and other prescriptions at a much lower cost and get medical attention. I received a lot of information that has been very helpful particularly in my situation where I am trying to find resources for aging parents. I would encourage any Veterans who are do not know what benefits they can get and people like me who are helping to take care of parents, to contact the DAV, or their local VA office. Here in Winston-Salem, you can call 336-631-5481 or go to their website at www. dav.org to find out your closest Veterans facility. The Harley’s Heroes website is: www.DAV.org/HarleysHeroes.

By; Caroline In 2010, the Harley-Davidson Foundation made a second $1 million grant to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) to support our nation’s heroes through the Harley’s Heroes® program. Harley-Davidson’s relationship with the DAV dates to 2006, when the Harley-Davidson Foundation made a prior $1 million grant to the organization. Harley’s Heroes brings benefits, education, and counseling to veterans in communities all across the United States through the DAV Mobile Service Office (MSO). The DAV MSO program increases veterans’ accessibility to benefits by literally putting service offices on the road. Since 2007, this program sponsored by Harley-Davidson -- dubbed Harley’s Heroes -- has visited thousands of sites across the United States, providing important counseling and assistance to help tens of thousands of veterans and their families secure the benefits to which they are entitled from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, and other government agencies. Highly trained professional DAV counselors who are skilled experts in developing and prosecuting veterans’ claims staff the MSOs. Both Harley-Davidson and DAV have a rich history and long legacy of working with our nation’s military and veterans. On July 23rd, the Harley’s Heroes DAV MSO was at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in Winston-Salem, NC. As a partial caregiver for my parents, I had wondered what VA benefits my Dad might be eligible for. Especially since his hearing has always been very bad since he served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada where he was an airplane mechanic. During that time, he told me planes would practice take off and landings 2 at a time every 10 seconds in order to get them ready to go to Korea. Those personnel on the ground were not required to

Virginia Beach Bike Classic Helmet Ticket Update

By: Matt Danielson

Background The 15th Annual Virginia Beach Bike Classic was held April 29–May 1 at North Beach Landing in Virginia Beach, Virginia. This is always a great event, however, the event was marred by law enforcement. The Virginia State Police in conjunction with the Virginia Beach Police Department set up a few miles from the event and wrote tickets for offenses such as unapproved helmets, illegal exhausts, improperly mounted license plates, etc. It was reported at one point that they were refusing those without a “DOT Approved” helmet to proceed further and forced them to go back to the event a buy a new helmet. If you or anyone that you know received such a ticket at the Virginia Beach Bike Classic, please contact me and I will represent you at no charge. These charges are improper given the law in Virginia. For those in favor of mandatory helmet use this is not an attack on helmets. I respect the right of every motorcyclist to hold an opinion on this matter. However this is not about helmets, it is about ensuring that the police follow the law. If they are going to stop and charge people they should at least be familiar with the statutes under which they are charging them. I also want to reiterate that I am not anti-law enforcement. As an ex police officer and an ex prosecuting attorney, I have an extensive law enforcement background. However, too many times I see motorcyclists charged for not wearing a helmet approved by DOT when the law in Virginia does not require that a helmet be approved by anyone. I also see tickets for illegal exhausts merely because the officer does not like the sound of the exhaust. I have seen tickets for improperly mounted license plates merely because the license plate is mounted vertically instead of horizontally. Virginia law does not prohibit vertically mounted license plates. I have even seen a few handlebar height tickets when that law was repealed in 2003. You are not guilty of an offense simply because an officer says that you are. You are only guilty if you have violated a statute or ordinance. A great number of people charged at the Virginia Beach Bike Classic did not violate any state or local law. That is why I think it is important to challenge these tickets even though they are non-moving violations. If we, as motorcyclists, merely pre-pay them because it is too much of a hassle to go to court and fight then we will continue to receive improperly issued tickets. So if you have received such a ticket please contact me and I will be happy to take the case(s) at no charge. The Update I want to report the latest on the helmet tickets from the Virginia Beach Bike Classic. Again, I will give my caveat since the issue of helmets is a divisive one in the motorcycling community. I do not look at this issue as one that pits those who think motorcyclists should wear helmets against those who think adults should be able to choose for themselves. This

Chad Fuller (Columbia, SC office) L and Matt Danielson (Richmond, VA office) C were the featured speakers at the “Know Your Rights During A Traffic Stop” at Churchill’s in Greensboro on January 31st. They don’t look like your typical lawyer, do they? (That’s because they are NOT your typical lawyers!)

is about charges being issued to citizens for offenses, which, if challenged, the state cannot prove. Whether it is helmets, exhausts, license plate mounting, or any other offense, we, as motorcyclists, should not be at the mercy of the opinion of the officer issuing the ticket. The statutes are what govern and we should be afforded the due process that we are guaranteed under the law. The eighteen helmet cases from the Virginia Beach Bike Classic were heard on August 18th in the Virginia Beach Circuit Court. Fourteen were convicted and four were dismissed. There was no rhyme or reason for the four that were dismissed. In eight years this is the first time that I have see an unapproved helmet conviction on the Circuit Court level. But I know why it happened. The officer was not able to demonstrate a knowledge of any of the applicable helmet standards. In fact, he made it clear that the reason that he felt that the helmets were not “real helmets” is because they were not properly labeled. I had two expert witnesses and a letter from the Chief Counsel for the Department of Transportation, which explained that the labeling was for manufacturers who wish to self certify. The lack of a label is not a violation of the standard. It merely means that the helmet has not been certified. Certification in not required by the statute. That being said, the judge made it clear that he saw a problem with the statute and could not believe that it had not been

Continued From Pg 21 amended by now. Between cases he indicated that he was entering up convictions so that we could make our argument to the Court Of Appeals, who could settle this issue once and for all. We have not had an opportunity to do this before, but we do now. The bottom line is that we are off to the Court Of Appeals where I believe we will prevail. That would mean that the court’s decision would be binding across the state and would make clear to law enforcement that the mere lack of a DOT label does not mean that the helmet does not meet the requirements of the Code of Virginia. I want to thank all fourteen that showed up in court, you know who you are. All who were convicted have agreed to appeal their cases. All could have pre-paid their tickets but chose to fight and to continue to do so. Each has now taken two days off from work and incurred personal costs regardless of the fact that they incurred no legal fees. I offer each my personal thanks. “One Off” Custom Graphics FULL PARTS DEPARTMENT By: Rose and Lloyd On Saturday July 16 Tealisa Beck (“T”) opened up Last Call Bar and Grille, National Highway, Thomasville for a benefit for Allison Hunt from 2-6 pm. Allison Hunt was a beautiful flower born to Larry and Tamara Hunt Oct 12, 1994. Allison was born premature and her lungs had not fully developed. After 6 months on total oxygen she began to live a normal life. In 2006, at the age of 12, she was diagnosed with Broncholitis Obliterans, an irreversible lung disease. Allison’s health began to deteriorate and in April 2010 she was referred to Duke University Medical Center Lung Transplant program. On January 25, 2011, she received a new lung. She began to improve and life was getting back to normal. In late April a virus took over her body, typical of transplant patients. She went back to Duke and was put in ICV. On July 18, 2011 Allison lost her battle. That day her spirit rose like a butterfly to a greater place and watch down over all that knew and loved her. The benefit at last call was a great success and much needed for this family. The Jimmy Leggs band played, there was a 50/50, raffle, and auction. T donated 20% of all food sales that day. A very special thanks to all that participated; Auctioneer, Mark Conners, servers, Kay, Angie, Ashley, Holy, Sherri, and Hailey. Special thanks to Lee Bennett who helped get lots of gift certificates and items for the auction, and to Edward and Angie of Eagle Screen Printing for the donation of T-shirts. And a big special thanks to all that came out and participated in the benefit and also in the ride held in 2010. Even though Allison and family were unable to attend they felt the love from the family, community, and friends. As always the Biker family will answer the call when someone is in need.

Rally At Shady Side Dragway

Story and photo by Alan Dockery I love a weekend at the drags, from the big, fancy places to friendly little country strips. We are blessed with a bunch of old dragstrips in the Carolinas that still operate regularly. One place I like to visit is Shady Side Dragway just west of Shelby, NC. The end of July owner, Ronnie Buff, put on a Bike Rally and invited all y’all to come play at the strip. The party started Friday night with folks showing up to claim a camping spot and start seeing what their bikes would do. But the main crowd rolled in Saturday and started unloading bikes. Soon the little eight-mile strip in the country was roaring with the sounds of all kinds of bikes from thundering big-inch Harleys to screamin’ imports. Yeah, folks, it was hot that weekend. So we’d run the bikes for a while and once the motors and riders were hot we’d slide back into the shade for a break. This went on all day as folks challenged each other to see who was the quickest and more bikes came in to hit the strip. Besides guys racing their buddies, I saw brothers, husbands and wives, cousins - all kinds of bikers square off at the starting line. We took a break late afternoon to show off some of the nicer rides and award trophies. Besides drag racing, we got in some bike games, too. The plank ride was tough since most riders fell off before the end.

They started the slow race with the track Christmas tree and putted to the 60-foot lights. The keg push was new to some folks and almost as much fun to get organized as it was to watch. Then they did some people games on the track, too. Pole In The Hole is one you need to see to appreciate, and a balloon toss is always fun when it’s hot. Ronnie gave away the best “door prize” I’ve ever seen. It was an old door! I thought folks were going to pee on the track laughing. After some more drag racing it was time to shut down the track and party. Ronnie knows how to throw a party, too! Since the strip was closed and everyone was staying at the track he made the announcement, “We have free beer at both concession stands until it runs out.” Free beer is a good thing to start before the band plays. We rocked the rest of the night to Peacepipe. During the first band break they pulled a rollback into the staging lanes and had a wet t-shirt contest to cool off some of the ladies. Visit www.fullthrottlemagazine.com for more of my photos. And keep an eye on The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for when Ronnie invites y’all to Shady Side next summer.

By: Ron Palm & Caroline Saturday, August 13th, the threat of bad weather all but promised a day of rain for anyone who had any plans for that day. However, as Ron put it- “God smiled down upon this charity ride and chased the clouds away”, blessing them with great weather all day. A large crowd of over 60 participants kept the faith and came out to help the deserving children of Mooseheart Children’s Home and The Children’s Home of Winston-Salem. As the day wore on, it was apparent that the weather was going to turn out beautiful, at least until the ride was over. The Moose Riders’ route was over 100 miles through 4 counties and back to the Winston-Salem Moose Lodge. Once the riders were back at the Lodge, prizes were awarded for the best and worst poker hands, there was a 50/50 drawing and large Chinese raffle with many wonderful gift items and gift certificates donated to the cause by many generous businesses. Then everyone enjoyed fresh hamburgers, hot dogs, and cold beverages while listening to some of their favorite songs performed live by the band “RIDING WEDNESDAY “. As the sun was setting in the west, the big black storm clouds moved in from the east bringing a wonderful light show and offering to wash away the dust of the day’s ride. The W-S Moose Riders wish to say “Thank You” to everyone who supported the children and helped to make their ride a large success!

Trooper Shawn Blanton Memorial Ride 2011

By: Anchor Hello once again my fellow riders. I am glad to see that we still have a wonderful show of support when we get to honor one of North Carolina’s heroes. On Saturday, June 18, 2011 we all got to do that again for a gentleman and an officer of the law that we all still miss to this day. The day couldn’t have been any more beautiful for the ride. We gathered up and got to see old friends from other locations that we normally don’t get to see on the everyday ride. I got to start this rolling rally at the Jackson County location where we got to enjoy doughnuts and coffee and some much needed cold water to get us started! We received a shirt, some G540 stickers, and a meal and door prize ticket. Before the ride started we got our safety briefing and we had a prayer. We were escorted by the North Carolina Highway Patrol, and once we got on our way, it was non stop till we got to Exit 31, which is where the bridge is dedicated to Trooper Shawn Blanton, and gathered up at the Ingles parking lot. I can honestly say, “WOW!” to the amount of people that just kept pouring in from the other starting locations. We all took a break and got up with some other long term friends, drank some water, took some pictures, and waited for the next leg of our journey to begin. When we left from Ingles, the ride felt like it had some help and more respect from that the cages that we passed as some cages helped block traffic and also traffic that we pulled up on from either direction pulled over and let the 400+ bikes ride by. On one occasion, I saw a man that pulled over, got out, and saluted the convoy that was riding by (respect is not dead yet!). Something about this ride touched me when I saw that so many people came out and waved and cheered for this ride. Funny thing is just as normal as it seems that we had been having these out of the blue showers that just show up, well as we all got to our final spot at the old high school, the clouds moved in very quick and, you guessed it, the down pour of all down pours hit. But, technically the ride had no rain and it was all afterwards (LOL). This year everything was even amped up from the year before. The food was served quicker, they had waters on the outside, drinks on the inside, and plenty of room for all the people to sit and enjoy some really great BBQ and stories. They had a great DJ in the back playing some good music that wasn’t overbearing, so you didn’t have to yell at the person next to you, but yet still enjoyed the tunes. They also had their door prize drawing, and, as normal, they had some great prizes ranging from concert tickets to gift certificates. Now while this was going on people were pulling out the smart phones and looking at the radar trying to ride home when the rain was at it weakest so through out the drawing some people missed out on probably some great stuff when they thought they were beating Mother Nature at her game. I stayed to the end of the event, and my wife even showed up in her cage and wanted to see if I wanted a ride home, and of course I said I rode here I will ride home (just a little slower

than I got there! (LOL). And, yes, I had a great time at this event. I dubbed this the rolling rally last year and I stick by it. I look forward to it every year and I would like to see it hit as the largest rolling rally on the east side of the Mississippi. This is not only a great ride and event; it is for a great cause that helps students with Scholarships and each time they are able to help more and more!! The wonderful people that set this event up every year do this from their hearts and would like to ask if any one would like to help in any way for the future rides to please contact them through the web site at www.TrooperShawnBlantonScholarship.com. You can also sign up from the form on the site and you can see a little about the man that we all miss.

AHDRA At Bristol Thunder In The Valley Nationals

Story and photo by Alan Dockery To keep fans from baking in the sun, this year the All Harley Drag Racing Association changed the schedule a little at Bristol Dragway the first weekend of August. Qualifying didn’t start until 3 pm Saturday afternoon and everyone I talked to liked Saturday night at the dragstrip. Not only was the weather much better, it was cool to see the flames from the nitro-fueled machines as they thundered down the strip. Qualifying was done about 10 pm so we still had time afterwards to hang out with buddies in the pits. The best party was at the Tracy Kile / Bad Apple Top Fuel pit. They even had a couple guys playing live music by their trailer! Since we didn’t have to be on the strip first thing Saturday morning, that meant we could party Friday night, too. Folks were kind of laid

field, including the one ridden by Mark Cox, Wilkesboro, NC. Keith Browne, Semora, NC, had that cool looking turbo bike running right at Bristol and qualified number one in Rush Pro Gas with a 7.200 ET and ran 193.35 MPH. He went on to win the class. Keith ‘Stump” Williams, Myrtle Beach, SC, also ran in Pro Gas. Scott Kirkpatrick, New Ellenton, SC, won the Bison/ Vreeland Super Gas class by five thousandths of a second! Also in the class was Greg Best, Raleigh, NC; Jay Beasley, Winston-Salem, NC; and Miles Hamrick, Sr., Gastonia, NC. Dickie Johnson, Aynor, SC, ran in Purvis Hot Street. 7th Annual Sunday Bash At Tilley Harley-Davidson Of Statesville By: Vickie Kress Seven years ago, Ronnie Carver came up with the idea of having a Sunday Afternoon Bash at Tilley Harley-Davidson. The first one was such a success that it’s happening once a year now and continues to grow and grow. The Seventh Annual Sunday Bash was held on July 17. Thanks to the Statesville HOG Chapter for helping set up and manage all the activities and clean up. Again, the whole parking lot at Tilley Harley-Davidson of Statesville began filling up with motorcycles even before the noon start. The street also fills with cars. At least a 1,000 people come from all around to hear the “Part Time Blues Band” provided by Don & Robinette Tilley and enjoy the food, bike show, door prizes, and the great atmosphere. The food and beer from Lancaster BBQ was great, and Anna’s Sweet treats furnished sweet icy fresh drinks, funnel cakes, and more. Hooters of Lake Norman provided their girls to wash bikes and The Bob Karney Calendar girls where here with great gifts and signing calendars. UNB Customs displayed their trike conversions. A big thank you goes to all our vendors and to our door prize providers, Tilley Harley-Davidson (Gift Certificates), Bob Karney Law Firm (Cheryl Crow Tickets), “ Parts Unlimited” for 6 great product items and Alex Beam for tickets to Memory Lane Museum. Tickets were sold for these doors prizes to help raise even more money for the charities along with 50/50 tickets. The peoples’ choice - bike show raises lots of money for the

Photo by Alan Dockery charities. The 1st place winner was Jamie Canipe, the 2nd place winner was Bill Hawes, the 3rd place winner was Eileen Ervin and overall winner went to Randy Hager. All of the proceeds collected from this big event are shared between two great charities; the Victory Junction Gang Camp and Muscular Dystrophy Association. Thank you Don and Robinette for all you do. This is an annual event you don’t want to miss so save the date, July 15th, 2012, for next year.

2nd Annual Charlie Mike Memorial/Iron Butt Ride

By: Quietman, CVMA 15-1 “Remembering The Forgotten War” On August 5, 2011 with cloudy skies we departed the Harnett County Veterans Memorial in Lillington, NC for our 2nd Annual Charlie Mike Memorial/Iron Butt Ride. Our Mission was to bring recognition to the “Forgotten War” with a ride that visited PFC Womack’s grave site in Mill Spring, a Combat Medic and Medal Of Honor Awardee from the Korean War, and then ride to Washington DC to visit the Korean War Memorial all the while riding 1000 miles within 24 hours. We left with over 40 bikes in two groups for safety, 5 minutes apart. We had some experienced riders from last year’s ride, some new riders, and of course we had our favorite dog Chewy, the Iron Mutt, and his driver with us again this year. We headed west through Sanford, to Hwy 1, 15/501, and across Hwy 24/27 for a nice ride to our first stop for gas in Locust. After the few sprinkles pulling in we knew it was time to put the rain gear on. Then just as we rode I-485, the outer route around Charlotte, the rain hit us so fierce we contemplated calling it quits. Luckily before anyone quit the rain let up right as we neared I-85 and the ride continued to Hwy 74 West towards PFC Womack’s gravesite. We arrived at Lebanon Methodist Church to pay our respects to PFC Womack. The parking lot was not level and unfortunately a bike fell to the ground during a group photo. Luckily, damage was minimal and easily repaired. Our Chapter Commander and one other rider were not able to take the rest of the trip so they stayed and greeted our second group. We then rode out waving to the second group as they were coming in. I heard later, the second group had two bikes fall, just as the Chapter Commander went to warn them about the grade and parking. We headed north towards Asheville and on through Tennessee and Virginia to Washington, DC. Despite hitting more rain, we enjoyed the ride north along the mountains on I-26 to I-81. The second group however, was plagued by construction detours and ended up making a few scenic laps around Asheville, which put them further behind, then we wanted so they had to do a little extra work to gain the gap back. Luckily through the aid of modern technology “texting” and the ride call center in Fayetteville, we were both able to keep tabs on each other and close the gap. We stopped three times throughout the night before both groups finally linked up for the ride into Washington DC together. We rode into DC around 4:30 AM so, lucky for us, the traffic was minimal and we were able to get good parking at the Korean War Memorial by parking in the permit only

parking area. Everyone had a somber visit and their own personal peaceful moments at the Veterans memorial. Then after a group photo, we saddled up, weaved our way out of DC and headed towards I-95 and the homestretch. Rolling with 40 bikes deep, we started to stretch out pretty good so our next fuel/rest stop was welcome, especially since it had been almost 3 hours since our last bathroom stop. After this stop we split back up into two groups and mysteriously my first group added more bikes and our second group got a little thinner. From there we took the outer beltline around Richmond which was a nice ride and we did hit a little bit of rain but by this point the sun was coming up and we didn’t mind especially since we were near our mileage goal. With one last stop before the border of Virginia and North Carolina we were 55 miles from the official mark of 1000 miles and we had over 3 hours to do it in so everyone was in a great mood and ready to go. Our next planned stop was in Benson, to link up the groups again and ride into Dunn together. On the way, we hit the some more horrible rain. My glasses kept fogging up and I think at one point I was taking directions from my co-pilot through the intercom. We hit our official 1000 miles while we were still in the rain so the celebrating was kept to honking our horns and cheering because we had to stay focused on the road ahead, Thank you North Carolina for that one! We linked up with everyone in Benson and were able to remove our rain gear and stretch out for a few minutes. Calls were made to our welcoming committee in Dunn and we saddled up and rode the little 3-mile route to meet them. We linked up with our LEO escort and a bunch of other bikes for the 16-mile trek, our last as Group of Charlie Mike 2 riders. We arrived at 11 AM, which meant we had ridden 1066 official miles in 23 hours and 50 minutes. All in all, we finished with 36 bikes, 41 riders, and our little two-time Iron Mutt, Chewy. During our mission we visited our fallen brother PFC Womack, the Korean War Memorial in DC, and picked up our 1000 miles in 24 hours goal with no injuries or serious incidents, making this a huge success. We, as the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Chapter 15-1, owe a huge thanks to the Christian Motorcycle Association with Cowboy and Edwin for the support with the covered wagon, and all the riders that joined us this year to make this ride possible. Without all of you we would have been making this ride with about 10 bikes instead of 36! Thanks to all that supported and rode with us this year and we look forward to seeing you all again next year!

1st Annual Backpacks For Kids

By: Kevin “Chappy” Pitts July 23, 2011 there were over 100 people coming together in the Staples Parking lot in Lincolnton, NC for the 1st Annual Backpacks For Kids Ride and Event, benefiting less fortunate kids in Gaston and Lincoln counties. They started riding in on their motorcycles and started gathering at 9am registering and bringing backpacks filled with school supplies. At 10am we were saddling up for the 50+ mile ride through 4 counties and 2 states to end up at a retreat area near Crowder’s Mountain in Gaston County. Although there were a couple of bikes that had mechanical problems, no one was left behind as the trailer crew from Carolina Faith Riders was available to load up the disabled bike and bring it on to the retreat area. The ride took us through Kings Mountain National Park just inside the edge of South Carolina, and through some nice back country two lane roads where, even though the mercury was climbing to well over 90, the shade on some of these back roads was a welcome relief from the heat. When we arrived at the retreat area, there was music by Damascus Road and then 3:16 Band. The bands were rockin’ it out and loud and proud, there was also plenty of hot dogs and hamburgers with fixins’ and good cold Lemonade, tea and Ice water which was very welcome on a hot July day. There were lots of prizes to give away and plenty of fun to be had. Kathy Lynn from Experteez in Lincolnton won the raffle for the ladies leather jacket. Gabby from Gaston CBA won the DOT certified helmet. There were plenty of other prizes given away including a custom HD clock, and several High Def radio kits, and many others. There were hundreds of school supplies and backpacks gathered up on this day, and they will be distributed throughout several schools in Gaston and Lincoln counties in NC in the next several weeks before school starts Special Thanks to the organizers: Mount-Up Motorcycle Ministry, CMA Chapter #539 Ambassadors for Christ, Carolina Faith Riders G.R.A.C.E. ALWAYS REMEMBER

I Will Force Myself To Remember The Weeping And Remember The Pain I sat in a movie theater watching “Shindler’s list,” and asked myself, “Why didn’t the Jews fight back?” Now I know. I sat in a movie theater watching “Pearl Harbor” and asked myself, “Why weren’t we prepared?” Now I know. Civilized people cannot fathom, much less predict, the actions of evil people. On September 11, 2001 dozens of capable airplane passengers allowed themselves to be overpowered by a handful of poorly armed terrorists because they did not comprehend the depth of hatred that motivated their captors. On September 11, 2001 thousands of innocent people were murdered because too many Americans naively reject the reality that some nations are dedicated to the dominance of others. Many political pundits, pacifists, and media personnel want us to forget the carnage. They say we must focus on the bravery of the rescuers and ignore the cowardice of the killers. They implore us to understand the motivation of the perpetrators. The major television stations have announced they will assist the healing process by not re-playing devastating footage of the planes crashing into the Towers. I will not be manipulated. I will not pretend to understand. I will not forget. I will not underestimate the intelligence of our adversary who patiently planned and meticulously orchestrated a devastating act of war. I will not forget that the terrorists desire a world society where women are chattel and freedom is forbidden. I will not isolate myself from my fellow Americans by pretending an attack on the USS Cole in Yemen was not an attack on me. I will not forget the Clinton administration equipped Islamic terrorists and their supporters with the world’s most sophisticated telecommunications equipment and encryption technology, thereby compromising America’s ability to trace terrorist radio, cell phone, land lines, faxes and modem communications. I will not be appeased with pointless, quick retaliatory strikes like those perfected by the previous administration. I will not be comforted by “feel good - do nothing” regulations like the silly, “Have your bags been under your control?” question at the airport. I will not forget the liberal media who abused freedom of the press to kick our country when it was vulnerable and hurting. I will not forget that ABC TV anchor Peter Jennings questioned President Bush’s motives for not

returning immediately to Washington DC and commented, “We’re all pretty skeptical and cynical about Washington.” I will not forget that CBS anchor Dan Rather preceded President Bush’s address to the nation with the snide remark, “No matter how you feel about him, he is still our president.” And I will not forget that ABC’s Mark Halperin warned if reporters weren’t informed of every little detail of this war, they aren’t “likely - nor should they be expected - to show deference..” I will not be influenced by so-called, “anti-war demonstrators” who exploit the right of expression to chant anti-American obscenities. I will not forget the moral victory handed the North Vietnamese by American war protestors who reviled and spat upon the returning soldiers. I will not be softened by the wishful thinking of pacifists who chose reassurance over reality. I will embrace the wise words of Prime Minister Tony Blair who told Labor Party conference, “They have no moral inhibition on the slaughter of the innocent. If they could have murdered not 7,000, but 70,000, does anyone doubt they would have done so and rejoiced in it? There is no compromise possible with such people, no meeting of minds, no point of understanding with such terror. Just a choice: defeat it or be defeated by it. And defeat it we must.” I will force myself to: hear the weeping, feel the helplessness, imagine the terror, sense the panic, smell the burning flesh, experience the loss, remember the hatred. I sat in a movie theater, watching in quiet reverence as the blood of young soldiers turned the sands of Normandy beach red in “Private Ryan” and asked myself, “Where did they find the courage?” Now I know. We have no choice. Living without liberty is not living. Author Unknown (Circulated on the Internet, December 2001) Google YouTube 911 to view an array of videos from that tragic day.

By: Meredith “Goldie” Golden Dear Motorcycle Riding Family, After too many years of not riding, I was back, after meeting my partner, 3+ years ago. It’s so wonderful! I’d almost forgot the feeling, even if you’re just riding on the back. Another thing I also almost forgot was the Brother/Sisterhood shared by all that ride, and is showed by acknowledging all that ride. It might be the Peace sign, thumbs up, hand out, or index finger (not middle) up off the handle bars. All are saying, “We are Family”, even if we never meet or pass each other again. We were there at the same moment, knowing how the riding feels in our hearts, souls, and bodies. Recently John D. and I rode 250 miles through North Carolina and Tennessee. We rode some Interstate, but mostly back roads. I think they’re more fun. On that journey I started to notice that a number of the bikes we passed were not giving the “Hi Sign”. I understand there are times it won’t happen, but it seemed like more than that. After about an hour into our ride I started to keep count, and about 50% of folks we passed didn’t acknowledge - a worrisome thing for me. I don’t want to see this tradition, custom, Brother/Sisterhood connection go away. It’s important to keep it going. It’s part of the biker culture. Our society is becoming so disconnected. It seems the more we use the internet to e-mail and mobile devices to text, we interact less and less with each other on a face to face, person to person level. The connection all folks that ride have, no matter what you ride, or where you’re sitting on that bike, is on that personal level. Let’s not forget that! We’ll be staying connected when we ride, hope you will too! See you on the open road. Happy and Safe Trails! Aloha, Goldie.

3rd Annual Freedom Ride

By: Buzz & Lydia Disappointment is waking up to rain on a Saturday morning. Especially when you had planned on going for a ride! But, I had my mind made up that I was going no matter what! So I strapped on my boots, dusted off my rain jacket, and hit the road! I rode through a steady rain all the way to Greensboro Harley-Davidson. When I rolled up I was pleased to see other motorcycles lined up for the 3rd Annual Freedom Ride to benefit the Triad Flight Of Honor. The rain had moved through by 10:30 and bikes were steadily rolling in. The registration table was set up in the motorcycle park between Greensboro Harley and Steel Horse Saloon. They had hot coffee, Krispy Kreme Donuts, blueberry muffins, and other breakfast pastries that didn’t dry my socks out any, but definitely hit the spot! They also had Freedom Ride shirts available. There were some active military personnel, plenty of veterans, and other American patriots present. It was good company all around. The ride start time was bumped back to 11:30 to allow some of the folks who were dodging the rain plenty of time to arrive. Thankfully the rain didn’t scare off too many folks and there was a good turn out for the ride! Before the Ride started the American Legion Post 55 presented the colors followed by a 21-gun salute and then a gentleman in Navy whites played the Star Spangled Banner and Taps on the trumpet. If that doesn’t stir your emotions, I don’t know what will! After a bit of ride info and a prayer, we were ready to go. We took a nice ride down Highway 220, to 62, and on to 22 through Julian, NC. We ran through a few little sprinkles but the ride was comfortable in short sleeves. We stopped at Freedom Park in Liberty to take a break, pull poker hand cards, and eat more donuts. No complaints here! Off we went again, headed for Petty’s Garage in Level Cross. By the time we rolled in to Petty’s Garage the sun had come out and the warmth was welcomed! We took a tour or the Petty Garage that included some of The King’s famous #43 racecars and other beautiful old cars. It was definitely a cool stop! We set our sites on Greensboro Harley and hit the road. When we pulled up at the motorcycle park a crowd had gathered for the festivities and HAiZ RAiL was on stage rockin’

out. There were folks playing cornhole under the shade of the big Pin Oak trees in the park, and hanging around the bar at the Steel Horse Saloon. Bob Karney “The Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer” of The Karney Law Firm had his tents up with the beautiful Ginger & Eldena helping him pass out bandanas, and calendars. HAiZ RAiL took a break and a Marine Corps Color Guard came front and center while Rachael Weaver sang our National Anthem and WOW(!), did she ever do a great job! Awards were handed out for the best hand and for appreciated participation. There were raffle prizes, and a 50/50. The 50/50 winner graciously gave half of her winnings back to the cause. Everyone was having a big time at the motorcycle park. After I made some rounds I was ready to go home and take those wet socks off! Lydia Thorne, who organized this ride 3 years in a row, deserves special thanks for doing such a great job and so does Leger Meyland for arranging the route the ride would take. A very special thank you to all the Freedom Ride sponsors: Pepsi Cola, Krispy Kreme, US Food Services, and Starbucks. With almost 100 Freedom Riders who came out we were able to raise almost $2,800 to benefit the Triad Flight of Honor. These funds will enable 6 more WWII Veterans to travel to Washington to see the WWII Memorial free of charge.

Davis Harley-Davidson Annual Open House And Bike Show

By: Scott Wicker On Saturday, July 16th, Davis Harley-Davidson in Burlington, NC held their annual Open House and Bike Show to benefit breast cancer research. A great turn out of 41 bikes represented 14 different classes on a hot summer’s day. The day started out with a flag presentation by the Alamance County Red Knights Chapter 7. Matt Lovette did a great job with a solo version of the National Anthem. The Mason Lovette Band played great tunes throughout the show and all the Davis H-D employees in every department stayed busy throughout the day showing off what was new for 2012, especially the new 2012 Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Everyone had a fun filled day. In all, over $1000 was raised for breast cancer research. We would like to thank everyone at Davis Harley-Davidson for their hospitality and great day at the show. Thanks to everyone who participated in the show and gave unselfishly to this most worthy cause. Congratulations to all the winners and top-finishers in the show. 4th Annual Bethel Baptist Church Ride

By: Caroline Bethel Baptist Church in Yadkinville, NC gets my vote for having the best church biker group. May 14 was the day they held their 4th annual ride. Typically the church holds a benefit ride to raise funds for their missions and elderly funds. This year the focus was on two men in their church family, Mickie Reavis and Randy Wood. They were honored at this year’s ride for all the blessings the two have brought to the church and their community as well as the way God has blessed them. I thoroughly enjoy this ride, even though it is only the second time I have been here. It was a well-planned, enjoyable experience. The fine folk with the Yadkin County Sheriff’s department led us on a 2-hour ride through the beautiful countryside in Yadkin, Surry, and Wilkes County. Even though there was a small amount of rain, it did not deter the riders from coming out and having a great time. When we got back the food was prepared and ready for us to dig in. That is another thing that I find amazing at this church. It seemed like all the church was involved with the ride whether or not they rode, they made sure the event was a successful one. If you would like to go on a great ride with a great group of folks, they have this ride each year in May. Keep your eye on The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for next year’s date.

Bros & Bro-ettes,

Have you ever ignored something just hoping it would go away? Ever had a pain of some kind and didn’t want to go to the doc? Ever had a problem and didn’t want to face it? Ever had a Brother or Sister really let you down? Ignoring something usually doesn’t help, it’s still there, it didn’t just go away! I had one of those pains and it turned out to be blockages and required open heart surgery. Ignoring it didn’t help but acknowledging it did. I have problems everyday in the Ministry that I would rather not have to handle; people problems. And ignoring them doesn’t cause the people to go away! Sometimes the toughest thing to do is to acknowledge, admit, face, confront, and accept that something is wrong. Something you need to deal with, handle, and not ignore any longer. Something in your life that may need attention, something left out, something missing! Do you sometimes feel lonely in a crowd or depressed when you should feel happy? Discontent even when things are going OK? These are all warning signs that we should learn to pay attention to and not ignore. You body tries to warn you, your emotions or feelings try to warn you, your Soul and Spirit try to warn you! Pain in your body; the Lord has given us doctors. Pain in your heart (feelings and emotions), the Lord has given us family and friends and true brothers and sisters! Pain in your Soul and Spirit, the Lord has given us Jesus!

Quit ignoring the warning signs! None of them, including Jesus, will go away! Heb. 13:5 …for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Pray the Biker’s Prayer on this page, mean it in your heart, and do not ignore the need for Jesus in your life any longer. IN “HIS” WIND Preacher Steve

Summer Ragin’ And Rollin’ At The Roost

Story and photo by Alan Dockery A long-standing tradition at Riders’ Roost is to head for the hills and chill out when summer seems the hottest. The weekend closest to the July full moon is when we really howl for the Summer Rage. Friday night we packed the game room while singing and dancing to Mad Mike’s Karaoke. This was one of those nights when lots of folks said, “Give me the mic!” and showed some talent. Sally really wowed the crowd with her voice and singing some classics right on. When J.C. belted out a variety of songs the crowd cheered, too. We partied late into the night and wondered if the band could top what we did. If you wanted to cool off for the weekend, the Roost was the place to be since it stayed cool and overcast most of Saturday. The occasional misty drizzle wasn’t even enough to get ya wet or put out the campfire. It did keep most folks around the camp enjoying their favorite beverages with friends, and as usual, the sky cleared enough for the band to jam. Saturday night we rocked out to Matter Of Fact until about midnight. That was also when the clouds parted enough for us to see the moon and howl some more in the game room. Rollin’ On The River A few weeks later, I was back at The Roost for the Rollin’ on the River party. With some cool, wet weekends I had not spent much time in Elk Creek. And I like the creek at Riders’ Roost. That Friday the weather in much of the Carolinas was not good for motorcycling and folks were apparently hunkering down at home. Well, for y’all who didn’t head to the hills for the weekend, you missed out! Friday night was dry and the crowd was ready to party at the pavilion. We’d jam to the DJ for a while and one of the young, new Roosters would break out his guitar and play while we sang along. Some old friends, but new Roosters, were even there. They love the place, too, now. Saturday was one of the nicest days this summer. The weather was beautiful, not too hot, and the creek was perfect for relaxing in the shallows, making laps around the swimming hole, or lying in the rapids. Even the fishing was good as I caught a bunch every time I went down to feed them some worms. The goal for that weekend was to raise money for Riders’ Roost Charities, specifically benefiting fallen veterans and their families. Late that afternoon we gathered by the creek for a Duck Race. Then some of us showed our lack of balance in the raft races. Once I got settled I quit falling off. The slow race was more fun for some of us than the haul ass race. Roger McClure bet on the fastest duck. David Riggles pulled a finish line slingshot draft to beat Wayne and me in the Slow Tube Race. Donnie Smith out stroked us all in the Fast Tube Race. Yeah, we got an afternoon shower Saturday, but it was over

in plenty of time for folks to start partying that night. With a one-man band, R.B. Stone, we gathered in the pavilion for a relaxing night of blues and rock. There are a few more party weekends planned this year so y’all come join us. Be sure to check out my extra photos at www.FullThrottteMagazine.com.

NHTSA Administrator David Strickland has testified once again before a Congressional committee urging federal action to get motorcyclists to wear helmets. On July 27, during a reauthorization hearing on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Strickland told a subcommittee of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation that “the most important step we can take to reduce the deaths of motorcyclists on our roads and highways is to assure that all riders wear a DOT compliant helmet.” He further stated that, “A grant program emphasizing the use of motorcycle helmets would be effective in reducing fatalities.” Last year, in response to Congressional testimony from Strickland that increased helmet use is the core component of NHTSA’s motorcycle safety plan, US Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) introduced a resolution urging NHTSA to concentrate on motorcycle crash prevention and rider education instead of lobbying for helmet laws.

MIDWAY YAMAHA - SUZUKI 1335 National Hwy Thomasville, NC 27360

By: WildThing When asked ‘what was your most memorable ride?’ I believe the typical motorcyclist will dredge up the longest one or one that took him the farthest away from home to expound on. You could ask which ride was a favorite ride and a lot of riders would have a hard time choosing. The simple fact is that every time you swing your leg over the saddle and flip up the kickstand, life improves immeasurably and your spirit is renewed. Thus all rides are memorable and favorite! For purposes of this feature, I am choosing to describe my ride to Milwaukee in 2003 to help celebrate Harley-Davidson’s 100th Anniversary. Yes, it was a long time ago, but when riders are standing around shooting the breeze, something is said that inevitably sparks a memory of that ride to the H.O.G. Mecca. Milwaukee is 1000 miles from High Point, so we took two days to get there, and upon arriving mid-afternoon rode directly to the heart – the Juneau Avenue Harley-Davidson Complex. This was the ultimate motorcycle rally – venues at the Juneau Ave. and Capitol Ave. plants, all the local dealerships, the Summerfest grounds, downtown, the Milwaukee Mile and the HOG XX at the Washington County Fair Park. There was food, music, and motorcycles everywhere – literally! The residents and the police in Milwaukee were welcoming, friendly, and always ready to help you find your way around. There were directional signs all over town pointing the way to the various venues, and “Welcome Harley Riders” posters and American flags on the bridges and overpasses. It was a great party. My recollection of the ride home still haunts me and has for years afterward. It didn’t just rain, it monsooned! Seven hundred fifty of the one thousand mile ride was in a driving foggy rainstorm south through Illinois, Indiana, southern Ohio Kentucky, and West Virginia on the Interstates going 60-70 mph alongside big rigs. Best part was all the other Harley enthusiasts we’d pass on the road or commiserate with at the gas stops, were having as much fun as we were! About half way through West Virginia, we rode out from under the grey clouds into blue sky and warm temperatures. We had to pull over immediately and peel off drenched rain suits and leathers. I’ll be honest with you, when I parked my bike at home, I was REALLY glad to be home. Looking back, I am amazed at myself and grateful that neither my husband nor I had any mechanical problems (the cam bearings on my ’99 Road King started to go out about a mile from home!), except for not being able to see most of the way. Every time you make it home in one piece, your ride can be called a success. I still do not like riding in the rain, but if I have to, I can and after that one, a shower or an hour is nothing! If you have an “I Ride Full Throttle” story to share, how about sending it in, with a picture, if you have one, to the Editor@FTCarolinas.com. If we publish yours we will send you a “I Ride Full Throttle” patch. Hope to see ya out there!

Jeanie Hood-Carter and Mickey (Bear) Carter Founder of BFBF By; Jeanie Hood-Carter August 6th was a mark for the Bikers For Bikers Foundation. Buddy Langley, South Carolina State Captain for BFBF, hosted the first Poker Chip Mania benefit. Started out with a group suppose to ride from Fayetteville, NC to Spartanburg, SC. With a rain in the forecast the only ones who made the ride was the President, Mickey “Bear” Carter and myself, Jeanie Hood-Carter. With no one chasing in a truck we winded up having to take a cage with supplies. Just before time for the poker run, Mother Nature gave us a down pour and only 4 bikes with 8 people and 1 cage took off from Bailey’s. First stop was to get something to eat and Bar B Que was on the menu. Buddy was disappointed at how many riders these days don’t ride in the rain. You always find out who is hard-core when it rains. Luckily, the rain stopped and everyone went to Side Traxx for the next stop, a few drinks, and some Karaoke where Buddy and a rider named Annie participated. Gotta say, Buddy can sing and sing he did! Of course, there were a few people not so talented but, definitely worth a good laugh. Entertaining it was and they were all full of good spirits and lots of fun! Next, back to Bailey’s for a live band, 50/50, the remainder of the chips, and more. The Oath, a very good rock & roll band was getting started and the crowd was pouring in. Man, what a band! They were rocking the house and played a wide variety of rock. The remainder of the poker chips were pulled and each chip had a number on it. You added the numbers up and the person with the highest number won. Chuck, who actually participated throughout the event and rode, won with the highest number. Up till the last minute, I thought I had the high number. It’s those quite guys you gotta watch out for every time! Buddy was selling 50/50 tickets and Mickey and I were signing new members up and selling BFBF tee shirts. Within an hour, the whole bar was full and everyone was having fun. They had some good dancers and one lady who did a short bar dance. When The Oath took a break, BFBF had brought Buddy some tee shirts to throw to the crowd. Boy, the crowd got into that and people were putting them on and wearing them. After the band finished playing for the night, Buddy had a lady from the crowd pull the winning ticket for the 50/50 drawing. I was holding the winning ticket, which Mickey had bought! All the money was donated back and went to the foundation. Buddy did a great job. Even though the rain held a lot of riders back, the event was a great success. A big thanks to all who participated and especially to Buddy for doing a great job and those who actually rode in the rain.

Ray Price Racing Puts On Strong Performance At AHDRA Bristol Race Grimes In Close Drag Race To Finish Line In Second Round Of Eliminations The last trip to Bristol Dragway for the Ray Price HarleyDavidson / Akea sponsored drag bike was back in June where they captured a win as part of the nitro Harley exhibition race at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals. This time around they were at Bristol Dragway for the AHDRA Screamin Eagle Thunder in the Valley Nationals August 6th and 7th, 2011. One of the unique aspects of this race is that Saturday qualifying starts mid-afternoon and continues into the evening under the lights. The team started out strong with Grimes twisting the throttle to post a 6.734 ET at 219.83 MPH in the first round. Between rounds one and two the team had the misfortune of breaking a rocker arm which hampered their performance in rounds three and four. The team went back and readied the 1,000 horsepower nitro Harley drag bike in time for Sunday’s elimination rounds. In the first round of eliminations Grimes powered the Akea Express to a convincing 6.596 ET at 223.91 MPH to move the team into the next round. In the second round Grimes faced a tough competitor going up against Douglas Horne. It was a close drag race all the way to the finish line with Horne pulling

the upset by a narrow margin of 8/1,000 of a second posting a 6.497 ET to Grimes 6.579 ET respectively. “The drag bike ran very consistant in elimination rounds after the team faced some challenges during qualifying on Saturday” said Ray Price. The Ray Price Motorsports team sends sincere thanks to all their sponsors for their support for the 2011 race season. Moose. As they were loading the plane to return, the pilot said the plane could take only the hunters, their gear and one moose. The hunters objected strongly saying, “Last year we shot two, and the pilot let us take them both. And he had exactly the same airplane as yours.” Reluctantly the pilot, not wanting to be outdone by another bush pilot, gave in and everything was loaded. However, even under full power, the little plane couldn’t handle the load and went down, crashing in the wooded wilderness. Somehow, surrounded by the moose, clothing and sleeping bags, Stosh and Stan survived the crash. After climbing out of the wreckage, Stosh asked Stan, “Any idea where we are?” Stan replied, “I think we’re pretty close to where we crashed last year.”

Baggerz Saloon Ladies’ Lock-In

By: Biker Vicky The new Baggerz Saloon at 4212 Ebert Road in Winston-Salem, NC, proved that they are not just for the guys. June 17th was all about the ladies, when they hosted their first Ladies’ Lock-In. Promptly at 8 pm, the guys were officially locked out as the girls ordered their drinks, found a good seat by the stage, and excitedly waited for the coming entertainment. At 9 pm the main focus of the night took the stage. I thought it was extremely nice of the folks at Baggerz to think of their female customers and provide them a very delicious evening. The fellows made a point of spending time with each lady present and making her feel very – ehhemm – feminine (read HOT). Well, you get the picture, and I am not going to go any further, being a lady, I don’t kiss and tell! Besides if you weren’t there, then YOU missed a great evening. But, the good news is that Baggerz Saloon is going to have more great events coming up. You can find them by looking in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar.

Obama Signs Lead Law Exemption Bill For Kids’ Off-Highway Vehicles www.AmericanMotorcyclist.com

August 12, 2011

In a victory for families who enjoy responsible motorized recreation, President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill to allow the sale of kids’ off-highway vehicles (OHVs) to continue, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports. On Aug. 12, Obama signed into law H.R. 2715, introduced by Reps. Mary Bono Mack (R-CA) and G.K. Butterfield (D-NC). The measure exempts kids’ OHVs from the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008, known as the lead law. The CPSIA, which went into effect on Feb. 10, 2009, banned the making, importing, distributing or selling of any product intended for children 12 and under, including kids’ dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) that contained more than a specified amount of lead in any accessible part that might be ingested. H.R. 2715 cleared the House by a 421-2 vote on Aug. 1, just before lawmakers went into their summer recess, and earned Senate approval by unanimous consent the same day. The new law is a victory that is the result of nearly three years of intensive efforts by the AMA and its partner organization, the All-Terrain Vehicle Association (ATVA), their members and millions of advocates of responsible OHV recreation. “Federal legislators deserve a lot of thanks for their tireless efforts, especially U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-MT), U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and all the other lawmakers who supported an exemption,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Hundreds of thousands of parents, kids and motorcycling club members responded to AMA calls for action to contact their elected officials and their efforts, along with all those volunteers who circulated petitions and took other actions, brought this issue to the attention of Congress and turned the tide in our favor. “I’m sure that those letters, emails and telephone calls to Congress had a major impact in convincing lawmakers to exempt OHVs from the lead law,” Dingman said. “I’m also convinced that the AMA Family Capitol Hill Climb held on May 26 played a major role, since it put a human face on the issue by showing lawmakers the kids and families who are suffering because of the CPSIA. “I want to thank Racer X magazine, Doublin Gap Motocross Park, Mason Dixon Riding Association 6 and 7, Tomahawk MX Park, the Middle Atlantic Motocross Association, Budds Creek Motocross Park, High Point Raceway, and advocates such as the Yentzer family and Moto-Patriot Nancy Sabater, who brought youngsters to Washington, DC, for the AMA Family Capitol Hill Climb to lobby their lawmakers,” he said. Dingman also thanked other organizations and individuals that worked diligently on the effort, including the Motorcycle Industry Council and Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, which represent the motorcycle and ATV industries; the mo-

torcycle enthusiast and trade media; Sean Hilbert, president of Cobra Motorcycles, which makes kids’ dirt bikes; the Coombs family and Tim Cotter of MX Sports, which has conducted the famed AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship featuring thousands of promising young riders for the past 30 years, and Kirk “Hardtail” Willard, president of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. “I want to extend a very special thanks to Malcolm Smith, a member of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, who brought a lot of attention to the unfairness of the lead law when he hosted a media event at Malcolm Smith Motorsports and sold some youth OHVs as a symbolic gesture to protest the law,” Dingman said. The AMA has been at the forefront of the fight to exclude child-sized motorcycles and ATVs from the CPSIA since early 2009. The association has participated in news events to focus media attention on the issue, lobbied on Capitol Hill, and organized campaigns to encourage riders and parents to contact their federal lawmakers and key decision-makers to exempt kids’ OHVs from the CPSIA. As a result, every single member of Congress, as well as members of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), have received powerful statements from members of the AMA and ATVA. The AMA magnified these efforts through its “Kids Just Want to Ride” campaign. To read more of what the AMA has done in its efforts to exempt kids’ OHVs from the CPSIA, go to http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/Rights/KeepKidMotorcyclesAndATVsLegal.aspx. Aimed at children’s toys, the CPSIA ensnared kids’ dirt bikes and ATVs because trace levels of lead can be found in parts such as batteries and brake calipers. Other children’s products were also affected by the CPSIA, such as books, clothes and microscopes. The CPSC, which is responsible for implementing the CPSIA, delayed enforcement of certain parts of the law until the end of this year, granting a reprieve for child-sized dirt bikes and ATVs. That gave those concerned about the law time to change it before the reprieve ended.

The AHDRA finale is named for the 19-time Top Fuel championship racing legend.

Qualifies Third Again at Bristol Mark Cox picked up where he left off at Rockingham Dragway in May at the recent Thunder In The Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway, Bristol, Tenn. The All-Harley Drag Race Association-sanctioned race was held August 6-7. Cox again qualified third with the Bojangles Pro Dragster Harley, prepared by Johnny Vickers of Hawaya Racing. “We continued to build on the momentum we achieved at Rockingham and had a productive weekend at Bristol,” said Cox, a former AHDRA Pro Drag National Champion. “I rode Johnny’s bike at Friday’s Test and Tune as a shake down. Johnny did his homework and went out during Saturdays qualifying and got the pole with an impressive 7.47 ET run. We capitalized on the things we discovered on his bike and were able to work out a few kinks on the bike I rode as well. After qualifying, we learned why we were dropping a cylinder and corrected the problem.” Cox went on to win his first round. However he faced current AHDRA points leader Scott Truett in the semi-finals, who beat him with a 7.53 to Cox’s 7.61 time. “We still needed a little more to win the semi-finals at Bristol but we learned a lot and feel we had a successful weekend,” added Cox, manager of Crossroads Harley-Davidson in Wilkesboro, NC. “We plan to carry the momentum we continue to gain into our next race at Rockingham in October. In the meantime we have a big promotion with our sponsor,
