I

f you are like me, my vacation is in the rear view mirror, the kids have all gone back to school, Labor Day weekend picnics are over, and things are beginning to settle back into a routine. In one sense that sounds kinda bad. Drab in a way, but it also sounds comfortable, doesn’t it? But Wait! Don’t be fooled into thinking that the riding season over just because you see “end of summer” poker runs and “fall” rallies. Here in the Carolinas, there is still plenty of good riding weather ahead. I love not having to put on a jacket every time I mount up, but the cooler air is so refreshing. Actually the fall is one of my favorite times to ride (along with summer, spring, and winter). Since you are reading The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, check out the Cruisin’ Calendar for all the great rides this month. There are plenty to choose from and too many to mention, that’s why we list them! Here are a few worth noting. There’s a 9/11 Memorial ride on the 8th, Thunder In The Smokies (14-16), Trail Of Tears on the 15th, Meeting of the Minds (20-23), Bikers, Blues, & BBQ (20-22) National POW/MIA Remembrance Day on the 21st, Capitol City Bike Fest (21-23), NC HOG Rally (27-29), and Outer Banks Bike Fest (27-30) See the cover story on page 5 for all the details on the Capitol City Bike Fest. It is one of the biggest events in North Carolina and well worth attending. There are 6 1/3 pages of events just for September! If your event isn’t listed, it is because you didn’t post if for FREE at FullThrottleMagazine.com If you look around, no mater if it is in print or on the Internet, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar has the most events with the most complete information of any, anywhere. It is what we do and we thank you for making The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, your “go to” source for information in the Carolinas. It IS why we are the #1 local motorcycle magazine on the east coast. Now quit complaining about the heat and get out there and ride. There is no guarantee that you will ride forever. Carpe diem.

By: Scott Wicker On Sunday, August 5th, over 40 members of the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter made their annual visit to Camp Carefree. The Camp has provided a free one-week camping experience for kids with chronic illnesses since 1986. The camp is located near Stokesdale, NC. The H.O.G. Group made a very safe and scenic ride to the camp to show its support by taking carloads of items the kids need and use everyday. The highlight of the day, as it has always been in the past, is giving the kids rides in sidecar-equipped motorcycles owned by H.O.G. Club member Wade Baise and also by volunteer Mike Brown. The kids were lined up waiting when we arrived and patiently waited for their turn to take rides down the winding roads throughout the camp. The excitement and smiles on each of their faces was inspiring to each member that made the ride to the camp. The rides took several hours to complete. Each child was given a Harley-Davidson bandana to wear and to keep that was given by Down Home Harley-Davidson of Burlington. Some wanted to go fast while others were content just to experience the ride. The participation by the kids at the Camp was overwhelming to say the least. Many got back in line to have a second ride as well. Many of the kids have been at the camp several years when the club has made its visits. Many of them have commented it is one of their favorite things they get to do at the Camp each year. The staff and counselors provided the club with refreshments that were very much appreciated on a very hot day. To show their appreciation, the kids presented Burlington H.O.G. Chapter President William Blanchard with a huge card for the Chapter. We would like to thank everyone at Camp Carefree for their hospitality and each of the kids there that made our day such a joy. Thanks especially to the members of the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter that took their time and donated items for the kids. We especially thank Wade and Mike for bringing their sidecar equipped motorcycles and unselfishly giving their time to such a great annual event. Remember! Ride Safe!

2012 Bulldog Heroes Announced By: Jordana Harmon Congratulations to the 2012 BULLDOG HEROES! This year, Bob Karney - Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer, launched a new annual charity project called the Bulldog Hero Awards. He teamed up with WRFX to honor bikers in the Carolinas for their outstanding contributions to their communities. The awards were presented at the 7th Annual Red, White, and Brew at Harley-Davidson of Charlotte and the nominees definitely came out to show their support! The original plan was to present awards to 5 finalists and make donations to each of their charities of choice, but this proved to be an impossible task. Due to the overwhelming response, Bob decided to bend his own rules a bit. He selected 6 finalists and then recognized all of the nominees by donating to each of their charities of choice. When asked how he felt about his new charity project, Bob said, “It’s an honor to be able to recognize these unsung heroes. It’s past time for the community at large to know more about the Biker community and the important role they play in their towns and cities. Bikers are everything that’s right about America.”

BULLDOG HERO OF THE YEAR

Joe “Trouble” Messina Joe Messina wanted to help fight child abuse and since he couldn’t find a local group that was doing what he had in mind, he started his own. Joe organized the first North Carolina Chapter of Guardians of the Children in Mooresville. GOC is a motorcycle group dedicated to recognizing and reacting to child abuse and educating the public to do the same. Joe’s efforts have paid

off to the point that the initial chapter has grown and divided twice, with chapters now in Gastonia and Winston-Salem. Joe also supports causes for children with special needs and veterans, repeatedly contributing to and participating in events to help those in need. For being chosen as Bulldog Hero Of The Year, Bob Karney - Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer will donate $1000 to Guardians of the Children

By: Caroline There was a great turnout on July 14th at Smurf’s Tavern in Danbury for a benefit ride for Valerie. 42 bikes came out to show their support for Valerie and to help raise money to help out with medical bills incurred from injuries she sustained in an accident just this past April. I have to say she looked great and was able to ride the entire way even with leg and arm braces. Over $800 was raised and presented to her after the ride when everyone met back at Smurf’s Tavern. Speaking of after the ride, I must say that Smurf’s bartenders, Marisa and Brenda, really gave it their all, in making sure that everything was set up perfect for the party later on that evening. The food was ready, the drinks were cold, and everyone was set to have a great time with the band, Synergy, leading the way. I have said many times that when hard times hit, your best friends are your biker friends and this was certainly true in this case. Be sure to keep an eye out for more events coming up at Smurf’s Tavern, this year. New manager, Kitty Strickland, is determined to make this the place that is welcoming to all bikers, and folks visiting the foothills area of NC. Be sure to stop by if you are in the area at 1035 Smurf Road in Danbury, NC. Also, watch for more events advertised in future editions of Full Throttle Magazine and in the Cruisin’ Calendar. Visit www.FullThrottleMagazine.com to view the magazine and the Cruisin’ Calendar online.

Christmas In July 10th Anniversary By: Kelly Wescott The kickstart party at Legends Pub in Fayetteville started the 10th Anniversary weekend of Christmas in July, 2012. On Friday, the 20th, approximately 60 participants signed up for the ride and were treated to a dinner of burgers, dogs and all the fixin’s. Great music by Python had everyone rockin, and a 50/50 raffle started the fundraising. The 50% won, was generously donated back to the hospital fund. At 8 am on the 21st of July, from M & M Leather in Fayetteville, 245 bikes and 16 Vette’s took part, all donating new toys for Dukes Children’s Hospital in Durham. The parking lot was full of sponsors, all donating services and prizes. We are truly grateful to them all as this ride would not happen without their support. Wal-Mart Transportation Office 6840, M & M Leather and Custom Cycle/Victory of Fayetteville, Texas Roadhouse, The Custom Edge, Double D Productions, JEB Designs, Dan Heiman State Farm, 96.5 Bob FM, Taionemedia, Greg Hunt Builders, Cape Fear Aesthetics, the Winford Foundation, Backwoods Customs, Legends Pub, ‘Gold’s’ Gym, The Renaissance Day Spa, Hot Hog Leather, The Twisted Jeweler, Luigi’s Restaurant, and others. Thank you all so very much. The Corvette club of Fayetteville made their first appearance, as did the Full Tilt Riders and several individuals, some from as far as Tennessee and New Jersey. Thanks for supporting the cause! Other groups returning included the Chrome Knights, Boyz II Men, The Steele Angels, and the local HOG Chapter. We are glad you joined us! All types of bikes were represented also, as Will said, “It doesn’t matter what you ride. We are all family”. Another 50/50 was pulled, and again, the half won was donated back to the fund. The event’s last hand-made wooden Rockin’ Harley which has been donated by Rudy Fox was auctioned off, The Hoke County Army Jr. ROTC presented the colors, the National Anthem was sung, a safety briefing by the Cumberland County Sherriff’s Department was conducted and a prayer was offered marking the official beginning of the 10th Annual Christmas In July Toy Run. With the threat of rain looming, we had over 100 miles to go. Along the way we were accompanied by the Cumberland County Sherriff’s Department, the Harnett County Sherriff’s Department, Lillington Police Department, Fuquay-Varina Police Department, Holly Springs Police Department, Apex Police Department, Wake County Sherriff’s Department, Durham County Sherriff’s Department, Durham City Police Department, and Duke University Campus Police. We thank them all for their support. As always, Texas Roadhouse generously provided a wonderful lunch of pulled pork BBQ, chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, and rolls for all riders. After lunch, we hiked to the hospital to unload a trailer full of toys. Using the buddy system, and with some help from Darth Vadar and the Carolina Garrison/Vader’s 501st Legion, the toys were off loaded into the hospital lobby, and what a pile it made! All toys will

be donated to children and siblings in need of a lift. It may be a birthday, a surgery day, or just a bad day, no matter what, a new toy will be provided. We heard from families directly touched by the hospital and the services they receive. As the parents of these children remind us, one never knows when the toy they receive could be the last smile they share with their loved ones. We honestly feel as if we are doing a very small thing, but they tell us it is a very big thing to them. We have been honored over the ten past 10 years to donate over $100,000 to the hospital, just from this once a year ride. Back at M & M Leather, we were treated again to a dinner provided by them, and more great music by Out Of The Cellar tribute band. They perform up and down the east coast, and rocked the house! Will and Ponce gave door prizes galore as the evening wore down. Another 50/50 was held, and for the 3rd time, the winning half was donated back to the hospital fund. The rain held off for the most part, as the 10th Anniversary Christmas in July wound down. A total of $19,000+ (money, toys and gift cards) was raised for the kids. Way to go everyone! See you the 3rd Saturday of July, next year!

Photo By: Buzz By: Lydia Thorne The 4th Annual Freedom Ride was held Saturday, August 11th and the ride was dedicated to the memory of Rich Brenner. Everyone gathered at Harley-Davidson Of Greensboro between 9:30 and 11 am for registration. The event started with an Honor Guard paying tribute to our Veterans with a 21-gun salute followed by the playing of TAPS. With over 100 riders escorted by NC Patriot Guard Riders, the Freedom Ride was wonderful. The first stop was the Richard Petty Museum in Randleman. Everyone truly enjoyed the museum. The ride through Randolph County on country roads was beautiful. Our next stop was at Freedom Park in Liberty. We encountered a little shower, but returned to Harley-Davidson Of Greensboro, where we hung out In Chunk’s Hawg Haven and enjoyed paying tribute to all Veterans. It was a great place to wait out the rain. I would like to thank each one of you for supporting the Freedom Ride for the past four years. I enjoy meeting so many wonderful people and the motorcycle community is so awesome. All you have to do is ask and you are there. This year, we raised $2400 for Carolina Field Of Honor (www.ncwmf. org). I look forward to the 5th Annual Freedom Ride next year. Suzette & Mark Jones Memorial Ride And Poker Run

By: Candace Beane RIT On June 17, 2012 Suzette and Mark Jones were out doing what they love – riding. No one knows if they were heading home or just still out enjoying the beautiful summer day in North Carolina. But what we do know is that a driver in the oncoming lane ran off the shoulder of the road and then overcorrected, which sent him directly into the path of Suzette and Mark’s bike. They were hit head on. The man abandoned his vehicle and ran away from the scene on foot. After numerous television stations aired his photo, the man turned himself in to the authorities two days later. Mark and Suzette left 5 children, Derik, Rodney, Garrison, Brittney, and Daniel whose ages range is from 14 to 28. Countless friends and family flooded the funeral service for the couple and it was in the parking lot after the funeral that Tom and Denise Aamland were talking to Robert and Christi Shatley, longtime friends of Suzette and Mark, when the words “poker run and memorial ride” were mentioned. Tom related that he and his wife, Denise, had been putting together poker runs and fundraisers for biker organizations and families for year. They volunteered to help organize and carry out a poker run that would benefit the children. In less than 30 days, this team, with a boat load of volunteers, put together and participated in a memorial ride that was truly a tribute to Suzette And Mark’s memory and their surviving family. Having signed the banners for the children and completed registration, we were ready to get rolling as the temperatures were heading into the upper 90’s. Kickstands were up at 12noon and 242 bikes rolled out of Ted’s Famous Chicken in Winston-Salem heading towards Rock Bottom Saloon in Salisbury. The sweat poured off of our brows as we headed out but no one complained because a temporary brotherhood of bikers from all walks of life banded together to celebrate the life and mourn the death of the patriot guards, Mark and Suzette. After our time at Rock Bottom Saloon, we rolled out to Buckshots in China Grove where we got a brief moment out of the heat and a cool beverage. White Oak Tavern in Kannapolis was also an oasis for the 200+ riders who were now wearing sweat soaked do rags. Our final destination was the Lucky Turnaround in China Grove. The food was home cooked and prepared by Alleys Restaurant in China Grove and there was plenty of it. The drinks were very cold and we needed plenty of those too! Music entertained us as we stood in line for dinner and bid on the Chinese Auction items. After dinner there was a live auction that presented everything from paintings to helmets to boots and everything in between. Kudos to those who volunteered those items for auc-

Photo By: DaPaPaBear tion. Approximately $8000 was cleared and donated directly to the children. Throughout the day we were all reminded of why we rode. Honor and compassion and tribute. Suzette served our country in the US Air Force while Mark retired from the National Guard. Both were faithful to the Patriot Guard Riders and to their families and friends. Many people look at bikers when we ride and turn up their noses or look the other way. They do not understand the love for our fellow man and our country. Mark and Suzette were honored that while looking down from God’s Glory. On that day we helped the children, laughed and loved together, and honored our fallen brother and sister by riding. David Lytton Benefit Poker Run

Story and photo by Alan Dockery On the second weekend of August, a whole bunch of bikers braved spotty rain showers to ride on a poker run for David Lytton. David had a motorcycle accident in June and was laid up in the hospital with head injures for a while. That Saturday we were happy to see that David is recovering well, but still has hospital bills to deal with. It was great to see a couple hundred bikers turn out for the ride. I’ve known David for longer than I’ve been back in North Carolina. I met him 20 years ago at the Harley drags a few years before I retired from the Air Force. When I saw that he was from Statesville, I had to meet him and we’ve been friends ever since. David was the crew chief for Mike Nicholson, who at the time was riding a quick little Sportster. They owned the Nitro Shack bike shop and eventually raced in Pro Dragster and Pro Fuel. “I was overwhelmed by how many people turned out,” David said. “I’m a lucky man and I am rich in friends.” Being a well-known Harley mechanic, David has helped lots of Statesville bikers. “I’ve known Dave for 15 years,” said Bubba. “He has always been there for everyone when they needed help.” The poker run ended at the Statesville VFW Post 2031. They weren’t strict about the last bike in since folks had dodged rain showers all day and spent a little more time at some stops than planned. Eventually, everyone got to the VFW for good food, music, and friendship. And it rained some more. Big deal, once you are wet you may as well stay for the party. As folks ate and hung around the VFW back yard, Rockie Lynne played on the stage. Through the rain, Rockie played his Songs For Soldiers and was much appreciated by us veter-

ans in the crowd. The Frank-N-Stan Band and Rough Around The Edges were also scheduled to play. Dave, Bubba, and others said there are lots of people to thank. First they appreciate the many people who showed up for the ride. Thanks to the Road Bandits MC, especially Josh, who was the backbone of the run. Josh got it going and organized the meetings. The stops along the ride made it possible and the VFW gave us a great place for the party. The other motorcycle clubs in the area supported the ride. And Dave’s sister Cindy and Dallas Hines helped make the poker run a success. Big thanks to Tilley Harley-Davidson, which helped with lots of their people working on the run.

7th Annual Matt Hunt Memorial Ride

By: Cathy Young Matthew Ray Hunt 17, of Trinity, decided one day in 2005 to take his younger brother, Bradley, fishing in a lake across from his house. When Matt and his friend decided to see if they could swim across the lake, his friend made it. Matt didn’t. Matt drowned, one week before he was to graduate from Trinity High School. Now every day his family has to live with the choice he made that day, and even worse, live without seeing what kind of man he would have turned out to be. Would he have gotten married and had kids, or would he have followed in his friend footsteps and joined the armed forces? We’ll never know. One thing we did know, though, is that he wanted to go to college to further his education. So, we, his family and friends, have put together a scholarship program in his name and give away a couple of scholarships to help fulfill his dream of going to college. Each year we hold a memorial motorcycle ride in Matt’s

33

name to fund his scholarship. We ask the public to help donate items to auction off, and we also have food, drinks, and t-shirts made up special for our ride. Our scholarships are usually given to deserving senior from Trinity and Wheatmore High Schools, who wants to further their education. This year, our ride began at the Hillsville Community Center. 37 bikes rode through the country to Morrow Mountain and Cox’s H-D before ending back at the Hillsville Community Center where hot dogs were served, and an auction with items donated from the community was held. Over the course of 7 years around $15000 has been raised for the scholarship fund. This year around $2,000 was raised and 2 scholarships were awarded. We would like to thank everyone who helps our cause each year. Also, posthumously, Rich Brenner who has ridden in our ride the last 4 years, and had already committed to ride this year on the day he passed away, and the bikers who have supported us for the past 7 years. Some have been on our ride every year, and some are new riders, but we really appreciate each and every one of you. Without you, we could never be able to put this event on. What you riders do to help us keep our Matt’s name alive means so much to us. He was such a special young man and we miss him more and more every day. This is an annual event in June so watch The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for next year’s date and come join us.

Hotter Than Hell Benefit Run

By: Jeanie Hood-Carter When the Bikers For Bikers Foundation scheduled their end of the summer Hotter Than Hell Run, they figured it would be just that - Hotter Than Hell! Fortunately, the Big Man brought a cool day for the event. Registration started at 11am, but things were rolling well before that as “Phat Phil’s Smokehouse” rolled in to Lost Memories at midnight Friday and started prepping the pork butts. He stayed up all night cooking and the pit was loaded! By the time BFBF arrived to set up, the air was full of the aroma of BBQ, and people were already waiting to register for the poker run. Tickets were $20 front seat and $15 for back seat. The entry fee included a meal ticket for each rider, a poker hand, and a door prize ticket for a BFBF tee shirt, and a raffle ticket for the custom bike being built for the foundation’s annual rally. About 40 riders registered and left in 2 groups with a few singles scattered in. Everyone was excited and smiling even though the sky was promising a little rain somewhere along the run. Stops were Charlie Mike’s Pub, The Dog House, and VFW 4542. The cool part was Randy and Nancy Porter came from Concord and even though they have each ridden for over 30 years, they were virgins at the poker run thing and there were a lot of new faces attending, so “Bullet” and “Hippie” took the riders on the 60-mile tour instead of the planned route. Then, it got a little exciting as Bullet hit a slick spot from a rain shower and left the road! Everyone held their breath as he traveled through the trees! Luckily, like a true cowboy on his iron horse, he kept it up and made it back onto the road without a scratch. Next, they had to wait for 3 trains to cross the tracks. It was a smoke break for many and for some a little relief for the burning butt! Of course, there was a small shower as well. One of the lady riders said she cursed and everything on her tightened up when she hit the rain. It was another first for her to ride her bike in the rain. I had never seen such a group of smiling faces as I did when this group of riders got back. The excitement was high and the ride had been invigorating! Perfect! Riders got their choice of brew and their plates of BBQ. Folks, I can eat but these plates were so packed it was unreal. You got a huge helping of pork butt, 2 buns, huge helping of coleslaw, baked beans, potato chips, and the most amazing sauce I have ever eaten. The sauce was thick and sweet, yet tangy. The BBQ was to die for! You need, and I mean NEED to eat ‘Phat Phil’s BBQ’! It is a life changing experience and you will crave it for days after. It was soooo good that we bought extra to take home. I still salivate when I think about it. Geez, that man can cook! Boone Bike Rally donated two weekend passes and two rally tee shirts as the prize for high hand. Greg Judd had high hand but was booked for another event so it was cast to another

winner. Randy and Nancy are excited about attending the famous event and we are thankful to Kenny and Boone Bike Rally for being so generous. Cari and Barry of Barry’s Performance Auto won the 50/50 and generously donated it back. Raffle items were won by various people and included things like collapsible coolers, a fishing rod, a leather vest, tees, tattoos, a beautiful new leather halter, and more. The winner of the halter gave it to Cari because she and Barry had been so generous with the 50/50. Believe me, Cari will do it justice! She is as pretty as she is sweet. Jerry Potts has attended and supported several of the foundation fundraisers. He had just returned from his 6th tour with the 82nd Airborne and stayed in touch via Internet while deployed. Mickey awarded Jerry a lifetime Charter Membership and a tee for his service to our country and for supporting the foundation. He has truly earned it after 6 tours. Around 6pm Chris Cox, a local artist, set up and played acoustic guitar and sang. He performed southern rock and some old country while many played pool and sat outside. The day was good, the people were happy, and Lost Memories was a blast! Thank you to all who supported the event, to Suzanne for riding all the way from South Carolina as well as the others who came a long distance, “Phat Phil’s Smokehouse for the amazing food, Carrie Lau for volunteering, Lost Memories for hosting, Hot Hog Leathers, Boone Bike Rally, Advance Auto, and those who donated to the raffle, and especially those who support the Bikers For Bikers Foundation and understand what true brotherhood is about. Mickey and I personally would like to say ‘THANK YOU’ to The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for being a supporter of BFBF and truly understanding what the foundation is about.

Easy Eddie’s Annual Adult Night Poker Run

By: Candace Beane Easy Eddie’s crew sure knows what bikers want. Poker, drinks, naked chicks, and a midnight breakfast were on the money for Easy Eddie’s Annual Adult Night Poker Run! The Big Red Double Decker bus was the main source of transportation for this ride and it was a blessing for those bikers who needed to party among friends without the concern of a throttle in their hands. There were 8 of us on bikes who followed the big red bus that held 60 of our friends. The poker run consisted of 3

stops at adult entertainment clubs in Charlotte followed by the return to Easy Eddie’s. Our first stop was Twin Peaks which was a smaller club with fine beverages and ladies. Twin Peaks started us out right. After one hour of entertainment, and some of our group being the spontaneous entertainment, the big red bus was boarded and the following bike pack rolled on to the Gentlemen’s Club. This place is very upscale down to the tuxedos worn by the bouncers. The atmosphere of the Gentlemen’s Club did not deter Easy Eddie’s adult night riders from showing them how bikers throw down. Some of our gals “helped” the professionals much to the joy of the crowd. Again, our hour was up and we were once again loading on the big red bus for our next destination. The Paper Doll, a standard in the world of adult entertainment, greeted us with open arms and smiles. I do believe the Paper Doll management had received calls from the clubs we had just left speaking of our enthusiasm for the adult night ride. By this time all bets were off and our group let their free flag fly. The drinks were strong and the bartenders were sharp. Our hour was up once again and the big red bus loaded for the final destination, Easy Eddie’s. A midnight breakfast complete with bacon, eggs, biscuits, gravy, and Danish filled our starving bellies as much as the camaraderie and naked women had filled our souls and eyes in the earlier hours. Judy, Easy Eddie’s better half, gave out prizes for participation and awarded the winners their cash. As Judy said at the end of it all, “We all won tonight because we all rode safely and came back together.” 2371 Spicewood Dr., The Easy Eddie’s Annual Adult Night Winston-Salem, NC Poker run was plain 336-918-2739 and simple fun with friends, old and new. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine

Thunder Valley - For Real Harley Drags At Bristol Story and photo by Alan Dockery The All Harley Drag Racing Association has held the Screamin’ Eagle Thunder in the Valley Nationals at Bristol the beginning of August for several years – and it was usually hot. So for the second year they tweaked the schedule to keep people from becoming biker jerky in the aluminum stands. The plan was to run a couple rounds of qualifying Friday night, the third round Saturday, and start eliminations Saturday afternoon. Cool, we southern boys are used to racing on Saturday nights.

Keith Browne, Semora, NC, had a problem with that cool looking turbo bike, apparently sliding it to a smoky stop on the top end of the strip and didn’t make the Rush Pro Gas field. Greg Best, Raleigh, NC, took that old Shovelhead to the final round earning the runner-up spot in Bison Racing Super Gas. Keith Richner, Moore, SC, didn’t make the 16-bike field. Christopher Wood, Goldsboro, NC, had the Wood Pile cheering as he qualified number one in Rush Super Eliminator. Chris went rounds and made it to the final where he was runner up, breaking out by .053 seconds. Jimmy Winters, Apex, NC; Lane Boger, Sr., Greensboro, NC; Garrett Owens, Welcome, NC, and Keith Richner also ran in SE. The Screamin’ Eagle Performance class saw a bunch of Carolina racers in the field. Rick Medford, Cherokee, NC; Gene Jennings, High Point, NC; Lane Boger, Jr., Concord, NC; Don Meeler, Goldsboro, NC; Erik Harley, Gastonia, NC; Kelly Overcash-Braswell, Sanford, NC; Jimmy Winters and Greg Best competed in SEP. Gary Spencer, Moneta, VA, claimed the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Big Bonus Check in the first round of SYN 3 ET when he posted a perfect 0.000 reaction time. Also racing in ET was Mike Best, Cary, NC; Glenn Sutton, Moore, SC; Christopher Steadman, Chesnee, SC; David Herndon, Huntersville, NC; Ash Payne, Mount Holly, NC; Gene Jennings, Chris Wood, Erik Harley, Kelly Overcash-Braswell and Don Meeler.

Gary Spencer cuts a perfect light (0.000) and wins the SYN3 ET #1 Qualiffier award from The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Well, we got lots of action and thunder at the dragstrip Friday night, but it came from the sky and not from the Harleys. I didn’t know my cover could twist that bad or my tent could hold 20 gallons of water. So Friday night was relegated to bench racing and beer drinking. Saturday was as pretty a day as you could have at Bristol and AHDRA decided to do two rounds of qualifying and then start eliminations. The track made us take a break for a while in the heat of the afternoon when water seeped up through the strip. The fans I talked to liked the all-day Saturday and into the night format, with racing finishing about 11 o’clock. Tommy Grimes, Pfafftown, NC, qualified the Ray Price H-D machine number one in the Screamin’ Eagle Top Fuel field. They went on to win the class over popular racer Doug Horne in the final round. Jay Turner, Julian, NC, and Tii Tharpe, East Bend, NC also competed in Top Fuel. Mark Cox, Wilkesboro, NC, qualified in the Rush Pro Fuel class. None of the Carolina regulars in Hawaya Racing Pro Dragster were at Bristol, but we did cheer for Janette Thornley, Roseville, CA, riding the Ray Price prepared Pro Dragster.

Christopher Wood, Goldsboro, NC, qualified #1 in Rush Super Eliminator

2012 Rat Ride - Saddle Sore Rally

By: Jim Cannon, Investigator Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group I’ve done “extreme touring” for some number of years now, mostly as a challenge to myself and the self-gratification that comes with pushing oneself a little further with each ride. Last year Matt Danielson had the brilliant idea to do a crosscountry run, Atlantic to Pacific to be exact, in less than 48 hrs. Had we certified the ride it would have been the Iron Butt Associations 50CC. Apparently Matt knew he was talking to the right guys and on October 20, 2011 Matt and I rode down to Jacksonville, FL and met up with Chad Fuller, the SC resident attorney for the firm, and Ralph Bell from ABATE of SC. At 7am the next morning we rode to the beach, stuck a toe in the Atlantic Ocean and took off. 43 hours and 36 minutes later we were standing in the Pacific. As we worked our way back across the country discussion soon turned to what’s next. Several ideas were bandied about, but Ralph’s idea soon became the most appealing to me. I’ve heard about this ride they do in Mexico, it’s like an iron butt, 1000 miles in 24 hours, only it’s in Mexico. Matt was first to respond, “Mexico, you’ll get shot and they’ll take your bike” (he was speaking of drug cartels, not the general population). Chad was kind of dismissive about the whole thing and I just had to process it. My thought process went from Matt’s right, to sounds like an adventure and you only live once. We got back from the trip and things settled some. Then, come January, I start getting emails from Ralph. Seems he had been in email contact with Marco Almaraz (co-founder of the Asphalt Rats Endurance Motorcycling Association) all along. And, Yes! I’m accusing him of conspiracy! He put me in contact with Marco whom I found to be a great guy with an infectious passion for this ride. That was it. I was hooked. Plans were made and on July 17, 2012, I left for a journey full of surprises, camaraderie, and adventure. Over the next couple of installments I will detail the Journey, talk about

L-R Marco Almarez, founder and prez of the Asphalt Rats Endurance Motorcycling Association and Jim Cannon friends made and lessons learned. I’ll tell you now I did finish the ride and qualify for membership in the Asphalt Rats which is a true accomplishment and honor to be associated with our riding brothers south of the border.

Vincent Thomas Lambise 1st Annual Poker Run

By: Judy Bortz This event was held August 4th in remembrance of the organizer’s father who died of cancer in 1998. Since his father’s death, Angelo Lambise has dedicated his time and life to raising money, and awareness for The American Cancer Society. This ride was the fifth fundraiser that he organized in the past two weeks with the help of Brian and April Atwood. Sign up was a Britt’s Motorsports at 11 AM, and being a ride at your own pace kind of run all participants were given a list of the stops to draw cards. The sponsor stops were at AutoZone Carolina Beach Rd (which was great because I needed a tire gauge to keep track of my slow leaking rear tire!), Wild Wings in Monkey Junction (where I ran into an old friend from my last RC – shout out Bulldog!), On the Border Mexican restaurant in Mayfair (where I ran into a coworker whose father I wrote an obituary for as one of my first articles in Full Throttle), and finally, Billy Goats where the after party was held (the bars anniversary bash was the following day which made it very special). The best part of the day was being able to ride with a couple I have known from on line biker groups for a while, who moved to Wilmington just the week before (Welcome home Hades & Christine)! Christine is a cancer survivor so it was very meaningful for their 1st ride to benefit The American Cancer Society! My point in all of these personal notes is that biker communities are diverse, and we believe strongly in honor, respect, and fellowship. We are CONNECTED! We ride to give back to our communities and the charities closest to our hearts. You find you have family, brothers and sisters wherever your road takes you. We all share something bigger than our own beliefs, bikes, likes, problems, and people. The sad thing is that so many of us share cancer. You have either dealt with it yourself, are dealing with it, survived it, or know someone who has. The American Cancer Society does so much for patients that really need the help. So often, insurance companies drop victims’ policies, family and those closest are at a loss as to what to do or say to help. The people at the American Cancer Society know how to help, they know what a patient and their family need to stay positive, and they give it to them! This is why the turnout for this run was a bit disappointing. About 20 riders signed up to participate, and with the raffles donations, and 50/50 we raised around $400 for the cause. Make no mistake though, every penny raised is good and all of us that supported the cause did so with that thought in mind. With the hope that through research our children won’t know the devastation that cancer can cause. Cancer doesn’t take just one life when it wins. It ripples through the lives of all the people that the victim touched, through entire groups and communities. The after party was an event in itself. Angelo inspired folks to keep their wallets open through laughter and tears, and challenged us all to kick cancer’s ass! Three bands played for

Angelo Lambise raffles off items to raise money to fight cancer the crowd’s entertainment. Velvet Jane, Aunt Polly’s Revenge, and Mad Dog Radio, all donating their time and talent, rocked the lot till after 9 PM. These are all great bands that you have got to see and hear! Domino’s donated dozens of pizzas with a lot of different toppings to please everyone! A very unique artist donated a couple of pictures for raffle, and I was one of the lucky winners! Check out the pics online at www.fullthrottlemagazine.com to see her bike art. She takes a picture of your bike, and ads some graphic magic. This is a great gift idea for yourself or that special biker in your life! You can email Jamie Dunmire at artisticause@gmail.com to get more information and pricing. Both high and low hands (funny note - they were riding together that day!) received a cool wooden box of poker chips with a plaque on the lid commemorating their hands, with high hand also getting a picture of his bike done by Jamie. Wheels That Heal is working on many more fundraisers, including a Halloween bash in October that promises to be an EVENT! Hopefully with your help we will raise more funds then! November 10th at the Battleship they will be holding the Wheels That Heal Car and Bike Show, so hold that date for a party you don’t want to miss! Full Throttle Magazine will have a booth, so come by to pick up your November issue and support this great free magazine, and The American Cancer Society! Stay safe out there brothers and sisters, and keep your eyes and hearts open to all of the connections.

Celebrating 30 Years

By: CrazyLady Photos By: Biker Bob Congratulations to Ray and Jean Price of Raleigh, NC for continuous and dedicated service. On Saturday, August 11, 2012 Ray, along with his wife Jean and their wonderful staff celebrated 30 years in business. What can you say about someone who has had many great accomplishments in his life except we hope you have many more? Ray was born in Johnston County, in North Carolina on a tobacco farm in 1937. At the age of 21, Ray married Jean (they will celebrate 54 years of happiness in September) and joined the United States Air Force. After leaving the Air Force Ray bought his first motorcycle from his brother-in-law and a few years later started his drag racing career. During his time as a drag racer he went to work for an electrical company. In 1973 he opened Precision Cycle located in Raleigh where he worked on motorcycles until he decided to buy a Harley-Davidson franchise, which became Ray Price Harley-Davidson in 1981. In 1998, after being in the same building for over 10 years, Ray decided it was time for a bigger place but he didn’t want to move, so the planning of his new dealership began. After three years of planning and building in stages Ray Price Harley-Davidson now occupies a new building that opened in 2000. The new building has three floors but only two that are open to the public. The first floor has many motorcycles, accessories, and MotorClothes as well as the parts and service departments. The second floor is used for meetings and is home to The Ray Price Legends of Drag Racing Museum to display Ray’s racing wins and trophies. The Ray Price Akea Express 1000 horse power Top Fuel Nitro Methane Harley-Davidson drag bike was on display outside by the front doors. It had started raining and everyone came into the showroom until Ray and his crew went out to start the bike up and then everybody went outside to watch him start it up. Man, is that thing ever loud! How loud you ask? Loud enough to cause a concrete parking lot to vibrate.

To help kick this special occasion off they had G105 WDCG FM 105.1 out where everybody had a chance to register to win a bike. This was presented by Cheerwine, G105, Wal-Mart, and Ray Price HarleyDavidson. Lyle A. Prindle from Garner, NC was the bike winner. The Cheerwine people were giving away free drinks and there were food and other vendors as well. Miss UNC Pembroke was there and we hope everyone got a chance to see her. As I said earlier Ray has won many trophies in his racing career but outside of that he is a designer as well as an engineer. He is considered to be the father of the funnybike, and he developed two speed automatic racing transmission and the very first wheelie bar. Although Ray retired from racing at age 66, he still fields a very competitive race team that goes after wins as energetically as he did. Ray Price has been inducted into four halls of fame including the American Motorcycle Association Hall of Fame, Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame, and the North Carolina Drag Racing Hall of Fame. Outside of the racing awards, Ray Price has received many

other awards. Two of those were awarded earlier this year. On May 22nd,The Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce presented him the award of Individual Entrepreneurial Company and on August 7th, he received an award from the Mayor of Raleigh in which she declared the week Ray Price week. When I asked Ray what keeps him going and not wanting to retire his answer was, “Fear of sitting down and wasting away”. Ray says he gets asked that question a lot and he tells them, “What do I have to retire to? I’m doing what I love, so if I retire, I have nothing to retire to”. I do have to say this about Ray and his company in 30 years of business he has never once had a complaint filed with the Better Business Bureau and there are not many companies that can say that. Ray and Jean, we wish you many more years of great business in the Raleigh area.

Dirty Dick’s Crab House Christmas In July

By: Steve (Santa’s helper) Rowland The GM of Dirty Dicks Crab House in NMB, Dale Green wanted to do an event in July that was fun and helped out our veterans. He came up with Christmas in July. Joe DiPasqua, the SC State Director of the American Legion Riders out of Little River Post 186, was right on board for a “Toys for Tots“ ride to help out. We met 4 weeks before the ride. The next meeting we had regarding this was really good. Kathy and Steve Maupin, Dale, and myself, had it all worked out. We started getting a T-shirt design together. After many changes and options, I realized how much is involved in getting a charity event together. We only had about 20 days of promotion. On July 25th, I met up with a couple of American Legion Riders, Mary Mazza and her husband, down at Post 186 in Little River for a quick ride to Dirty Dick’s Crab House. We rolled up at 11, just in time for the first dinner setting. Inside, GM Dale Green had Christmas all set up. There were decorated trees all around. As soon as you came in the door there were Christmas goodies and treats. Barefoot cookie and candy exchange brought that stuff in. The food today, Cajon Fried Turkey and all the trimmings, was awesome. Erica (head Chef) did a great job with the kitchen, turning it from a crab house into a Christmas house. They had Double Trouble singing, Marsha Morgan and Chris Wright had played there at another event and they were

great. They also had a choir caroling. It was lots, just lots, of fun! Toys for Tots®, a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which gives toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas, got 3 big boxes of toys. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major William L. Hendricks. Every year we have bike runs for them, so it was nice to get a little head start this year. The Wounded Warriors are receiving over $300. Again, that’s more money than they had this morning. The purpose of the Wounded Warriors is to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service members. To get more info go to www.WoundedWarriorProject.org Next year this will be one of the big events of the summer. Channel 13 News was there and I took plenty of pictures. Check ‘em out at FullThrottleMagazine.com. If you see us out there during bike week, or the SC HOG rally, stop and say “Hi”.

Bros & Bro-ettes

I took a nice ride the other week from Sturgis, SD up into Montana. It was a beautiful day. The road was straight and flat with almost no traffic and the speed limit was 75! What else could you ask for? You don’t get those kinds of conditions too often. But during the ride I found myself thinking about all the things I needed to get done. The trailer needed repaired for the trip home, ministry supplies, calls I should have made, etc. Then, it seemed from nowhere yet from everywhere, came a voice saying, “Don’t Mess Up The Ride!” I recognized the voice. I’ve heard it before! It’s God’s way of getting my attention sometimes. You see, when you pray and ask the Lord to be with you, He Is! And I always pray before riding and ask His protection and His presence. So, here I am riding “In HIS Wind” with perfect riding conditions, and I am distracted by letting my attention go to other things instead of just enjoying what He was giving me and enjoying His Presence. I was missing so much and He had to say, “Don’t Mess Up The Ride!” God wanted to show me the vastness of His creation, to feel His wind, to smell the clean air, to see all the beauty. He wanted me to see Him and thank Him for all He is as we rode together! He was giving me the perfect ride and I was missing it because I got caught up in my own little world with my own little things to do and my own little brain in charge instead of Loving Him from my Heart! After hearing Him say, “Don’t Mess Up The Ride” again to

me, I ask Him to forgive me and to help me enjoy this special time, and He did! What a blessing! What an awesome ride! So I ask you to pay attention, to listen closely, you may hear the Lord saying to you “Don’t Mess Up The Ride” of this thing called life that I have blessed you with. We get distracted from what God is doing and get caught up in our own little world and miss all He wants us to see and thank Him for. Love Him from your heart and acknowledge Him in all things. He is there! To know the Father you must come to Him through His Son, Jesus. Pray the Biker’s Prayer on this page, mean it in your heart as you pray it out loud, and “Don’t Mess Up The Ride!”

Spokes & Jokes

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!

I was visiting with my daughter last night. When I asked her if I could borrow a newspaper, she said, “Dad, This is the 21st century, I don’t waste money on newspapers. Here, you can borrow my iPad.” I can tell you this, that fly never knew what hit him! A pirate walked into a bar, and the bartender said, “Hey, I haven’t seen you in a while. What happened? You look terrible.” “What do you mean?” said the pirate, “I feel fine.” “What about the wooden leg? You didn’t have that before.” “Well,” said the pirate, “We were in a battle, and I got hit with a cannon ball, but I’m fine now.” The bartender replied, “Well, OK, but what about that hook? What happened to your hand?”
The pirate explained, “We were in another battle. I boarded a ship and got into a sword fight. My hand was cut off. I got fitted with a hook, but I’m fine, really.” “What about that eye patch?” “Oh,” said the pirate, “One day we were at sea, and a flock of birds flew over. I looked up, and one of them pooped in my eye.” “You’re kidding,” said the bartender. “You couldn’t lose an eye just from bird poop.” “It was my first day with the hook.” If the person in the next lane at the stoplight rolls up the window and locks the door, support their view of bikers by snarling at them.

and gets out of his van. He’s got a ladder, a baseball bat, a shotgun, and a mean old pit bull. “What are you going to do,” the homeowner asks? “I’m going to put this ladder up against the roof, then I’m going to go up there and knock the gorilla off the roof with this baseball bat. When the gorilla falls off, the pit bull is trained to grab his testicles and not let go. The gorilla will then be subdued enough for me to put him in the cage in the back of the van.” He hands the shotgun to the homeowner. “What’s the shotgun for?” asks the homeowner. “If the gorilla knocks me off the roof, shoot the dog!” I prefer to describe myself as a “Contemporary Anthropological Interactive Observer” because it has just the right amount of flair. Besides....”stalker” is such an ugly word. A man and a woman are sitting beside each other in the first class section of the plane. The woman sneezes, takes a tissue, gently wipes her nose, and shudders quite violently in her seat. The man isn’t sure why she is shuddering and goes back to reading. A few minutes pass. The woman sneezes again. She takes a tissue, gently wipes her nose and shudders quite violently in her seat. The man is becoming more and more curious about the shuddering. A few more minutes pass. The woman sneezes yet again. She takes a tissue, gently wipes her nose and shudders violently again. The man has finally had all he can handle. He turns to the woman and says, “Three times you’ve sneezed and three times you’ve taken a tissue and wiped your nose then shuddered violently! Are you sending me signals, or are you going crazy?” The woman replies, “I’m sorry if I disturbed you. I have a rare condition and when I sneeze, I have an orgasm.” The man, now feeling a little embarrassed but even more curious says, “I’ve never heard of that before. What are you taking for it?” The woman looks at him and says, “Pepper.”

got you a daughter! She’s a pretty little ting, too.” Ole got kind of puzzled by this, an then the doctor said, “Holey Moley, Ole we still ain’t done yet!” The doctor then delivered another boy and said, “Ole, you yust had yourself another boy!” Ole was flabbergasted by this news! A couple days later, Ole brought Lena and their three children home in the self-propelled combine. He was real serious and he asked Lena, “How come we got tree on the first try?” Lena said, “You remember dat night we ran out of Vaseline and you vent out in the garage and got dat dere 3-in-1 Oil?” Ole said, “Yeah, I do... Uffda! It’s a darn good ting I didn’t get the WD-40.”

Arthur Davidson of the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company, dies and goes to Heaven. At the gates, an angel tells him, “Well, you’ve been such a good guy and your motorcycles have changed the world. As a reward you can hang out with anyone you want to in Heaven.” Davidson thinks about it and says, “I wanna hang out with God himself.” The feathered fellow at the gate takes Arthur to the throne room and introduces him to God. Arthur asks God, “Hey, aren’t you the inventor of the woman??” God says, “Yes.” “Well,” says Davidson, “You have some major design flaws in your invention: 1. There’s too much front protrusion, 2. It chatters at high speeds, 3. The rear end wobbles too much, and 4. The intake is placed too close to the exhaust, and 5. The maintenance costs are outrageous.” “Hmmmmm, you have some good points,” replies God. “Hold on.” God goes to his celestial supercomputer, types in a few lines and waits for the results. The computer prints out a slip of paper and God reads it. “It may be that my invention is flawed,” God replies to Arthur. “But according to my computer, more people are riding my invention than yours.”

President Obama decided to do one of his public addresses against the backdrop of an American farm, but the ceremony couldn’t get started because of all the flies buzzing around his head. Obama demanded to know why the flies wouldn’t leave, so the farmer explained to him, “Well, those are called circle flies. They always circle around the back end of horses.” Obama angrily replied, “Hey, are you saying that I’m a horse’s a$$?” The farmer answered, “No Sir, Mister President. I would never call someone a horse’s a$$. It’s hard to fool them flies, though.” A lot of people wonder how you know if you’re really in love. Just ask yourself this one question: “Would I mind being destroyed financially by this person?” A man wakes up one morning to find a gorilla on his roof. So he looks in the yellow pages and, sure enough, there’s an ad for “Gorilla Removers.” He calls the number, and the gorilla remover says he’ll be over in 30 minutes. The gorilla remover arrives,

Lena is pregnant with Ole’s child. Late one night, Lena vakes up Ole and says, “I tink it’s time!” So Ole fired up the Yohn Deere tractor and took her to the hospital to have their first baby. She had a little boy, and the doctor looked over at Ole and said, “A son! Ain’t dat Great!” Well, Ole got excited by dis, but yust den the doctor spoke up and said, “Hold on! We ain’t finished yet!” The doctor den held up a little girl. He said, “Hey, Ole! You

Because I’m a man, when the car isn’t running very well, I will pop the hood and stare at the engine as if I know what I’m looking at. If another man shows up, one of us will say to the other, “I used to be able to fix these things, but now with all these computers and everything, I wouldn’t know where to start.” We will then drink a couple of beers, as a form of holy communion.

By: Caroline Smokin’ Harley-Davidson teamed up with Freeborne’s last Saturday, August 11th to put on a great ride for a great cause. We left Smokin’ that morning heading for Freeborne’s Eatery and Lodge in Laurel Springs and you all that know this route, are aware of the great scenery that makes it a biker favorite. We arrived at the Freeborne’s just in time to be served a hotdog/hamburger lunch. Then it was back to Smokin’ and Freeborne’s South for an after ride party. We were entertained by a great rock, blues band, The Promise Breakers as folks took advantage of the great food and drink specials. After all, who can resist all the great food that Freeborne’s features on their menu. I can’t forget to mention that radio stations, 100.3 The Buzzard, and Q104.1 New Country were also there to lend their support and serve as Masters of Ceremonies. Even though over $2,000 was raised for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital on this ride, this was only a “pre-ride” of the even bigger ride in September. On September 20th, Smokin’ will host a ride to Memphis, Tennessee, where they will meet up with riders from all over the country, all there to raise money for St. Jude’s. This promises to be an awesome event, so stay tuned to more information coming. You can sign up for VIP e-mail updates at www. smokinharley.com or at Full Throttle’s Cruisin’ Calendar updates. Also, don’t forget that there is always great entertainment and food and Freebornes’ South and the Eatery and Lodge. You can like them on Facebook to keep up with all their events.

The Asphalt Sisters, Blue Ridge Chapter

By: Kelly Henry The name came from the desire to ride our motorcycles on the highways and byways with a sisterhood of women. We named this group The Blue Ridge Chapter, because we want to see The Asphalt Sisters grow and spread. Maybe one day we’ll see the Queen City Chapter, or the Coastal Carolina Chapter. We are a sisterhood of ALL female motorcycle riders based in Asheville, NC, but with riders from all over western North Carolina and Tennessee. The group was founded by women for women riders. We wanted to give women a group that they could grow with, learn from, and also to share their experience with new riders. What we discovered was that there are A LOT of women who already rode and those who want to ride, want to learn, and are looking for other women for support. It has been an amazing journey so far. We have doctors, nurses, engineers, retail managers, a MSF Rider Coach, students, and stay at home moms as members. They are grandmothers, mothers, and single women. We have members from those who race bikes to riders who are so new to riding that they just want to ride easy and learn. It’s fantastic to see these women come together and support one another.

These ladies are serious about riding and being involved in the communities. We’ve ridden in memorial rides, toy runs, Relay for Life events, Hogs for Hunger, and Ride for Kids (an event to raise money for children’s brain cancer research). The Sisters also like to have fun, with Bike Night events at our local businesses and riding some known runs like “The Diamondback”, “The Tail of the Dragon”, the “Hot Springs Run” and now we’re tackling the Southern Dozen with some hope of getting all twelve rides in before the end of this year. We’re a very busy group and we try to have a good mix of rides so that all of our riders can come and participate in something every week or two. There’s also the support of having another woman to talk to about biker stuff. What’s biker stuff? You name it, it could be footwear and what has worked for them and no we’re not just talking “shoes”. Some ladies have found that a lace up boot is a better fit and adds some security when riding, while others swear by pull on “old school” boots. The new riders get to hear about gloves, glasses, and helmets from women who have been riding for years instead of the “try it out and see if it works for you” that some of us got from husbands, brothers, and fathers. There’s garage parties where the more experienced riders talk and teach the newbies about motorcycle care and maintenance, because if you ride it you need to know how it works and how to take care of it. After all it is her bike! The other part of our group that’s great . . . Do you have to stop being a lady, a female when you become a biker? NO. Riding with us is about respect and just being an independent woman who likes to ride her own motorcycle. There isn’t room in this group of riders for “men-haters”, “girlie-girls” looking to meet someone, or “sexy mommas” looking for some attention. We’re bikers and after all, do you think you would see Biker Bill with his high-heels on, his shirt tied up and out there looking for Mr Right? Well, Hell No, so why would we! So until we meet again, keep it on the asphalt, shiny side up and ride, sister!

The Forrest Family Benefit Ride And Auction

By: Tina Duke Christal and Jimmy Forrest were married on June 12, 2010 after being together for about 7 years. On Christal’s birthday, October 19, 2011, they found out she was having twins. What an AWESOME birthday present! Baby A was a boy (Elijah) and Baby B (Summer) was a GIRL! Jimmy was on Cloud 9. He was finally getting the girl he always wanted! After 27 weeks, complications forced a c-section delivery of Elijah weighing 3 lb. 2 oz. and Summer weighing only 1 lb. 9 oz. After 52 days in the NICU Elijah went home on June 2, 2012 weighing 6 lb. 4 oz. Summer was finally able to go home on June 22 after 71 days in the NICU weighing 4 lb. 9 oz. They are not out of the woods quite yet. They will still be monitored very closely with the pediatricians and specialists to keep watch on their development. As you can imagine the financial burden this chain of events has placed on this family is something none of us would want to experience. On June 23rd, riders gathered at Cox’s H-D for the Forrest Family Benefit Ride And Auction. After a ride through the country they ended up at Last Call in Thomasville where they had a big auction, a 50/50, and a raffle for door prizes. Thanks to Jimmy Shore who, at the last minute, stepped in and was our auctioneer! You were our lifesaver! Thanks to Cox’s Harley Davidson for allowing the ride to start at their location and Tealisa Beck of Last Call for hosting the end party and Michelle Smith who organized the bike ride. Last but not least thank you for all that donated money, auction items, and time, whether you were a volunteer or a rider, to help the Forrest family.

By: Paul Jones On Saturday, June 16th, a Motorcycle Safety Awareness Program (MSAP) workshop was held for future MSAP instructors. The workshop enabled anyone interested in becoming a MSAP instructor to learn how to teach a one-hour class on motorcycle awareness. These classes are taught to drivers’ education students in the hopes that they will become more aware of their surroundings while driving. If the students are more aware then more lives can and will be saved. The students and driver’s education teachers enjoy the MSAP classes that are taught. The MSAP program was created and designed by the Concerned Bikers Association/ABATE of North Carolina for everyone’s benefit. CBA/ABATE of NC helped get legislation passed to makes it mandatory that one hour of driver’s education class time be devoted to motorcycle awareness. Last year over16,000 students were taught the class, yet not all schools have this program. Our goal is to eventually teach ALL students at ALL the high schools in North Carolina this program. But we cannot do this unless we get more instructors trained to do so. The workshops are free to anyone interested and you do not have to be a member of the CBA/ABATE of NC in order to teach this program. If you are interested in becoming an instructor please go to http://www.cba-abatenc.org/msap.htm or contact a local CBA chapter near you. I would like to thank Matt Shamblin for coming out from the coast of North Carolina to teach the workshop here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Additionally, I want to thank those people who attended the recent workshop and also thank all the instructors who are currently teaching the MSAP classes.

Congratulations Tony Evans

By: Joe Cranford There are many reasons people take the Rider’s Edge New Riders Course at Harley-Davidson of Greensboro. They want to learn the basics of motorcycle riding, they need a refresher course, they can use an insurance break (who can’t?) or they’re checking off items on a bucket list. On the night of May 24, 2012 my Rider’s Edge class was in-

troducing themselves and expressing why they were taking the class. Tony Evans from Cary, NC said, “I’m taking the class because I think I won a bike”. Tony had entered the Mobil 1 Oil Orange County Choppers bike sweepstakes at Advance Auto in Cary, NC and he did win! One of the requirements before the winner could take ownership of the $45,000 customized bike was to have a motorcycle endorsement. Tony took the Rider’s Edge class and passed with ease! Now it was time to get his hands on the bike. On Friday August 27, Paul Teutul, Sr. of Orange County Choppers, Advance Auto Parts and Mobil 1 Oil presented Tony with his Mobil 1 custom bike at the Advance Auto store on Kildaire Farm Road in Cary. He was surrounded by family, friends, and co-workers. The temperature was a stifling 98º, but Tony looked cool as he grinned from ear to ear when he sat on his black and silver Mobil 1 Orange County Chopper custom bike. When asked what his first trip would be on his new bike, Tony laughed and said, “Around my neighborhood until I get used to it!” Congratulations Tony, and be safe!

Christmas In July At H-D of Asheville HARLEY-DAVIDSON OF ASHEVILLE September 8 BLOOD DRIVE In Memory of Jerry Allen Wilson

BIKE NIGHT

For a first time event, Christmas in July was a success. The ride, held on July 21st, Online Inventory Updated Daily started at Kearfott’s parking lot in Black Mountain, NC, where the toy run in Decem@ HDofAsheville.com ber also starts, and ended at the new Harley-Davidson of Asheville. 75 to 100 motorTues-Fri 9am-6pm - Sat 9am-5pm - Sun 12-5pm cycles left at 11am. 20 Patton Cove Rd., Swannanoa, NC When we arrived there, they greeted us with open arms. They had two fire trucks from Swannanoa Fide Department with their ladders extended and a huge American flag hung between to create a gateway at the entrance to the dealership. There were vendors, live music by Stryder, and food was available for a donation. They had a topless bike wash. However all of the topless bike washers were MEN! They washed 25 bikes and 1 car. The combined efforts raised hundreds of dollars. All gifts and donations are combined with the Smokey Mountain Toy Run to benefit the children in the Asheville area. On November 10th, Smokey Mountain Toy Run will have a pancake breakfast at Fatz Cafe in West Asheville and then ride to the Haywood County Toy Run. You can view pictures from the event at: http://goo.gl/t4ypY. We hope for an even bigger turn out next year.

By: Scott Wicker On Saturday, July 28th, members of Chapter “N” of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association Celebrated the 25th birthday of the Chapter at Riley’s Bike And Trike in Mebane, NC. Over 200 members, friends, and well-wishers came to the event on a very HOT July day. Naturally, the majority were Gold Wing riders. The event was attended by members from throughout North Carolina and included folks from many of the 36 groups that make up Chapter “N”. It is not unusual and very popular for groups in the Chapter to travel to each other’s events and meetings. The event made for a fun filled day. There was a bike show along with games of $wingo to keep folks inside and out of the heat. Great food was available along with a bake sale to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth. A lot of great items were given away including a 50” color TV, $250 worth of Silpada Jewelry, a $100 Gift Certificate to Riley’s Bike & Trike, an Afghan, and a plane ride around Kerr Lake near Henderson, NC. There was also a 50/25/25 drawing and lots of displays and vendors offering items and services. The Rileys had several beautiful new and used trikes on display for sale as well. They can even convert your two-wheeled scoot into a Trike too. The GWRRA Chapter “N” meets on the 4th Thursday of every month at 7:30pm at Western Charcoal Steakhouse on Graham-Hopedale Road in Burlington. Members meet to plan events and rides and enjoy each other’s fellowship along with a meal together. The Chapter is open to new members, not just Gold Wing riders, and anyone interested can contact Chapter Director Libby Jennings at 919-2911918 or Thomas Riley at 919-304-4580 for more information. We would like to thank everyone at Riley’s Bike & Trike for their hospitality and a fun filled day. Thanks to everyone that attended and made the celebration such a success. Remember! Ride Safe!

AHDRA Announces 2013 Championship Series The All Harley Drag Racing Association is pleased to announce that the 2013 AHDRA Championship Series schedule will be comprised of six races, beginning March 9-10 in Gainesville, Florida, and concluding on October 12-13 in Rockingham, North Carolina. Compared to previous years, AHDRA has reduced its schedule to six dates to focus on its historically strongest events, which AHDRA director Craig Tharpe explains is partly a result of the recent announcement of the formation of the NHRA Screamin’ Eagle Championship Motorcycle Series, a 10-race series that will compete at NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional events beginning in 2013. Tharpe noted that while AHDRA has reduced the number of events in its Championship Series, the new NHRA series will provide an additional ten race dates for competitors in several AHDRA classes to compete in. At least one NHRA Screamin’ Eagle Championship Motorcycle Series race will be held in each of the seven NHRA divisions, with the remaining three race locations to be selected based on scheduling and the best competition opportunities for Harley-Davidson motorcycle racers. The final series schedule will be announced later this year following the 2012 NHRA awards banquet in November. The NHRA Screamin’ Eagle Championship Motorcycle Se-

ries events will host five AHDRA classes, including Top Fuel Nitro Harley, Pro Gas, Street Pro, Hot Street, and Draggin’ Bagger. AHDRA will continue to host these classes along with its normal class lineup at all of its championship events. “Harley-Davidson and Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts are pleased to continue our commitment to the AHDRA as a presenting sponsor of six events in the AHDRA Championship Series,” said Harley-Davidson Racing Manager, Kris Schoonover. “Combined with the announcement of the new NHRA Screamin’ Eagle series, the opportunities for sportsman drag racers to showcase the power and performance of HarleyDavidson motorcycles at racing venues nationwide has never been greater.” Stay tuned to www.ahdra.com for more details and updates.

Kruzin’ for Kidneys! Chuck Hooper Benefit Ride

By: Scott Wicker On Saturday, June 23rd, family, friends, and supporters from the Alamance County area gathered to help one of their own, Chuck Hooper. In July of 2011, Chuck was diagnosed with end stage renal failure. On June 18th of this year, Chuck was put on the National Donor Registry to be a recipient of a kidney transplant. In most cases it takes sometimes 5 years for a donor to be found. Chuck has been blessed to have a family member and friends willing to be a donor as long as medical testing proves them to be suitable. The ride started at noon from the Old Ski Lodge in Ossipee, NC, a community just north of Burlington. Over 75 bikes and bikers participated in the event to help raise money to help

with medical expenses for Chuck and possibly the person who will be his donor. The ride safely made its way through Alamance County making its first stop at Bootleggers in Mebane before proceeding to Cuz’s Tavern in the Hopedale Community. Then it was back to the Old Ski Lodge. Lucky 13 and P.L.O.W provided great entertainment. The OSL provided delicious BBQ with all the fixins’ and there were baked goods to be had courtesy of Main Street Cake Shop. There were lots of door prizes and raffles with items donated by Dave’s Discount Furniture, Glen Raven Mills, JMS Investments, The Daily Times News, Alamance Party Rentals, and Down Home Harley-Davidson. Event T-shirts, provided by Kelly Hicks and Cindy Sharpe of Custom Uniforms were also available. Through the ride, raffles, a 50/50 drawing, and T-Shirt sales over $2500 was raised for this worthy cause. Chuck and his family would like to thank everyone that participated to make this event possible. Thanks goes out to everyone who volunteered their time and talents as well. Thanks also to The Decal Source of McLeansville. Chuck and his family have set up so that donations can be made to Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) through Kruizin’ for Kidneys at any SunTrust Bank. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Kristie Kincer-Wyrick who passed away in May of this year. Kristie was this ride’s Guardian Angel. She will be truly missed. Remember! Ride Safe!
