Drumline THE THE CHRONICLE CHRONICLE
EDITOR’S MESSAGE HELLO CUC FAMILY,
It is crazy that we are already here in the semester! The year is wrapping up and will be over before we know it which if you’re like me you now realize that there are a thousand and one things you have left to do AK! This is the 2nd last edition of The Chronicle for this year, it’s another mammoth of a paper which makes me really really excited. This semester we’ve had such an increase in writers and it is really encouraging.
BY REBEKAH MAURICE
I am going to be reprising my role as newspaper editor next year and I’m looking forward to it, my goal is to continually improve on the paper and I am thankful I have the oportunity to do so. If you would like to become more involved with the paper next year please let me know, I am always looking for new writers and new perspectives. To find information on the other incoming SA members for next year turn to page 20. All of our sports teams have done amazing all year, volleyball, hockey, basketball and soccer. The championships for basketball and soccer have recently occured and we have full coverage starting on page 7. I want to share my congratulations with the all of the teams this year for all of their hard work. Now I’m not exactly a sports person, I tried racing when I was in elementary school I tried really hard but I wasn’t very good. And by not very good I mean there were 65 racers and I came...65th... But I rentered the next year, and the next , and the next. My last year my goal was to come in within the first 50 runners, my sister’s was to come in the top 10. We both reached our goals, even though she walked away with a medal and I didn’t we both were equally entusiastic. I remember the great joy I had when the number 49 was written on my hand. It’s a joy I’ll always keep with me. Sometimes it’s not about winning it’s about trying. It is about not giving up and not getting discouraged, it’s about continually working even if you never make it to the top and no one ever makes an inspirational movie about you. You don’t have to be incredible to be amazing. Sometimes you just have to be the one that puts the “ordinary” in “extraordinary”. Even if you never make it onto the cover of a magazine you can still accomplish the smaller goals in life. If I’d wanted to come in 1st I would have been incredibly dissapointed but I reached just beyond my reach and I was able to achieve. Maybe if I keep going I will get 1st one day but I’m going to take it one step, one goal, and one dream at a time.

DRUMLIME
The air throbbed with the heavy pounding of wooden sticks on drums. Walls trembled with each bass beat, and I could almost see an electric buzz each time a cymbal clashed. As my sticks moved smoothly and methodically between the tuned drumheads of the quads I felt my body move with the rhythm of the cadence. I felt alive. Aurora Drumline is one of the many extracurricular activities here on campus, and is a great place to express creativity and emotion. Active since 2010, Drumline performs at Aurora basketball games, and has been a crowd favorite over the years. Players, spectators, and even the referees enjoy listening to the entertaining beats played by CUC students. Some of the Drumline members have had years of experience playing drums. “When I was 13, I was introduced to Drumline in pathfinders,” stated Sarah Kay, a first year Drumline member. “I wanted to play the Quads, the drum I thought would be hardest.” Sarah was in various drumming groups after that, so when she arrived at CUC, Drumline was an obvious choice. She enjoys playing with the group, and wants to share her passion with others. “I love feeling the beat, I love performing. I love it when people start to bob their heads to the rhythm. Music just makes you lively.” Not every member has had experiences with drums before. Benjamin Amoah, also a first year, has never played drums in his life. However, during this year Ben has become an essential part of Drumline, and helps carry the beat by playing the bass drum. “The hardest part of Drumline for me was memorizing the multiple cadences,” Ben admits.
“Rhythm and beats has been a natural thing for me, but knowing how to put it towards a form was definitely difficult.” Figuring out how to make a drum sound good is not easy. Instruction and guidance for members learning to play is provided by Drumline leaders Odessa Simon, Kwadwo Sarfo, and Saadila Swaby. These veteran drummers choose cadences, organize practice times, and perform with the squad throughout the year. Some cadences are ones that have been used previously, while others have been developed and perfected this year. Drumline usually practices twice a week, spending hours and hours working on memorizing the beats, improving technique, and designing choreography. But Drumline is more than just a musical group. It is also a family. Once you commit to Drumline, you are part of a group of people that support and care for you. They keep you accountable, and give positive criticism. If you are a part of Drumline, you are a part of CUC that is strong and proud. The beat was bright and sharp. The snares complimented the bass drums, which provided a foundation on which the quads and tenors built the cadence. The cymbals smashed together at just the right moment, adding the perfect amount of sass to keep everyone on their toes. Everyone knew when to come in, and when to pull back. The music ebbed and flowed, and the whole group played as one entity. We worked hard to get to this point, and together we will continue praising God through our beats. We are strong. We are proud. We are Drumline.

FACE LIFT BY KAITLYNNE WINSOR
To match the changes brought on by a new year, the CUC rockwall got a new face this past month thanks to the efforts of the Outward Pursuits students who gave a good portion of their study day to volunteer their time. Anyone who has seen our rockwall can attest to the fact that this was no small accomplishment. The wall extends along the entirety of the back of the school gym, and reaches from platform to ceiling, meaning that a three-tiered - somewhat shaky - scaffolding system had to be erected in order for us to be able to reach every part of the wall. I myself showed up about an hour after the task had been started, and already half of the rocks had already been removed and thrown into large backpacks so that they could be carted back up to the cafeteria to be washed. According to rockwall rules, every time someone on the wall happens
to drop something (usually rope) they are required to yell down to whoever is working below, so the gym was ringing with shouts of, “ROCK!” as dozens of pieces were loosened and tossed down by any means possible. Once the entirety of the wall was bare of rocks, the next step became paint preparation, and working in teams of two, I and one of the rockwall supervisors climbed the scaffolding to paint the trim at the very top of the wall. In order to make the wall more challenging to climb, the wall is designed with several integral formations and outcroppings including the chimney, the crack, and the diamond. These prevented the scaffold from reaching certain parts of the wall, so in order to reach all the places that required paint, occasionally it would be necessary for someone to tie into the ceiling hooks using just a harness and a piece of webbing. Altogether, the rock removal and paint job took about eleven hours to complete, but the job was still
not done. Once the rocks had been washed and dried, there was still the business of putting the rocks back on the wall, which is where the creative, and somewhat sadistic side, of the OP students comes out. Rockwall climbing comes in varying levels of difficulty, according to how challenging you want your experience to be; which is accomplished by designing “route systems”. Depending on the section of the wall, there will be the option of simply climbing using any rock you happen to grab on your way up, or you will be directed to grab only the rocks marked by colored tape. If the person who placed the tape was kind, then the rock holds are generally fairly easy to hold onto or stand on, allowing you to reach the top fairly easily. However, if you’re looking for a real challenge sometime before finishing this semester, then you’ll be directed to a route full of tiny holds - often spaced rather far apart - that will leave you hanging, literally, by your fingernails, but exhilarated nonetheless.
CRYSTAL GALA
CRYSTALLIZED BY CODRINA BASTON
On the evening of Sunday March 1, 2015 the doors of the Bentley dining hall were opened revealing a crystallized haven of luxury. Unbeknownst to most of the attendees was that just the night before the hall was plain, simple and average looking. Set up for the SA’s spring banquet had begun the previous night. After encouraging people to help a few weeks prior with pizza, Ivah Lumalang, the SA Social VP was able to recruit a team of focused, passionate and creative individuals. Working as a team under Ivah’s direction we were able to get the hall looking like a crystallized christmas ornament. Themes of white, silver and string lights made the room shimmer. The night of the gala began the following evening. As people entered they were given raffle tickets for prizes to be won later that night. The glittering evening began and soon each table was dismissed to get food. The food was absolutely delicious! In addition to the wonderful dinner, Ivah created her amazing candy booth once again. The long white tables on the side of the hall were decorated with all sorts of candy in metallic, blue and white colours. To top it all off there were cotton candy and shaved ice stations at the candy booth. Needless to say it was a sweet tooth paradise. As all the “banqueting” was going on Daniel Innocent and Lorenzo Role fulfilled their duties as entertaining emcees once again. Many talented students
also performed various songs throughout the evening, whether by voice, instrument, or both. After eating too much candy, taking pictures with friends and going crazy at the photo booth, Lorenzo and Daniel got everyone’s attention to announce the various outstanding well dressed folk at the Crystal Gala. Cards were distributed at each table and throughout the evening each attendee was to nominate different people in each category. Best theme dressed male went to Cody Shearer and best theme dressed female was awarded to Santena Purchas. Aaron Densmore and Rachel Maurice were awarded best dressed male and female respectively. Best hair went to Joshua Perkins’ perfectly coifed mane and best smile was awarded to Talia Orpana. The best dressed couple of the night was the perfectly matching pair- Sarah Clausen and Josh Mursic. Each winner was awarded a well deserved crown. Soon after awards were distributed it was time to do the raffle. An iPod shuffle, iPad, and numerous gift cards were among the prizes that were given to the lucky numbers that were drawn. As the evening began to wrap up everyone got up once more to take the last few pictures. As the last few photos were being snapped, it was hard to keep still with Uptown Funk blasting in the background. The energy filled the room even as SA members began to take down. Crystal Gala was over, but the memories live on. Thank you to the SA and everyone who contributed to make banquet such a success. It was a wonderful time.

STUDENT ASSOCIATION Nisha Johny PRESIDENT
Having had the chance to gain tons of experience and learn from it, I am so excited to do it again! As the last SA president for CUC and the first for Burman University, I have the privilege, and the responsibility of ensuring that I join hand in hand with both students and faculty to help rebrand, redefine, and improve. I am excited to rebrand CUCSA innovatively; a new website, new mediums of communication, SA logos, Clubs on campus, and the job descriptions of each SA member are some of the things we will be looking at. In order to redefine what SA has been in the past few years, we will continue to provide the institution with a new standard to function by: The Innovation Lab, The Ambassador program, the Sustainability Program, Student Forums and more will help do just that. We are also excited to work on improving communication between SA, students, and other entities on campus. I want to foster an environment where we as a campus have one collective goal that we will be taking intentional steps to reach, thereby facilitating and increasing school pride and sense of community. I want to encourage each and every one on campus to join me and my team in being selfless and doing what it takes to help Burman take off to the right start next year. This mentality starts TODAY and I can’t wait to see how it will impact the legacy that we have the honor to leave.
David Laing FINANCIAL VP
Jacqui McCarty Communications VP
I would really like to have Communications for BUSA on several social media sites. We already have a wonderful connection using Facebook, the new website, and Twitter—I want us to become even more connected with our instagram and Tumblr. Not everyone on campus has social media though. With weekly email updates, posters, YouTube videos, and other creative announcements, I think that we will maintain a strong connection of communication with the entire student association of our campus (every student is a part!). One of my passions is missions; next year we have a lot of student missionaries going out to various places in the world. These SMs are still a part of our campus even if they’re serving in another country. Working with the missions team, I want to make sure that our SMs are endlessly supported and never feel like we’ve forgotten about them. Our beautiful yearbook and informative newspaper, as well as vespers, worships, and church services, are great places to include them and support them as they experience new and sometimes scary things. I hope to ensure that all of our students, faculty, and staff, here and abroad, feel connected and informed about BUSA events, announcements, and plans
ELECTIONS
Ashia Lennon ACADEMIC VP
I think of the most noble jobs is to be in service of fellow humanity. The work laid out for an Academic Vice President would have me in the best position to be of service of my head, my hands and my heart. So why do I believe I am the right person for the job? Because I believe my experience in leadership on and off campus has given me a unique perspective. As well as the opportunity to have worked alongside the Student Association in the previous academic year gave much insight and enables me to build on a platform that has been constructed. I believe my passion for this campus and school legacy will ultimately translate positively into a place where students are proud to be.
Ivah Lumalang SOCIAL VP
I am so grateful and blessed to be re-elected as Social VP next year. It has been an honor creating ideas in my head and, with the help of an amazing team, seeing those ideas come to life. Last year, my goal was to bridge gaps and next year, I hope to bridge more. I want to live by the verse that says, “But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26). I am more than willing to be your servant again next year.
STAYING INVOLVED BY TALIA SMITH When I hear the statement “stay involved” I automatically think of leadership positions such as the Student Association. They’re very active in student life and planning events, making campus life enjoyable, making their presence very prominent. But when I take a while to really ponder what the statement “stay involved” means, I come up with a whole new imagery and realize how important it is to actually stay involved as a student. Staying involved is not just having a leadership role, be it a behind the scenes type of position or an upfront position, it is venturing out of your cozy room where sleep and homework pervade your thoughts, and taking part in the community CUC provides you with. That could be going out to vespers, Together, acappella, going to the gym, or even taking a trip to the mountains with a large group of people (even if you don’t know some of them because you can then begin to foster some solid friendships with them). Staying involved goes beyond having a title on campus, it reaches to the deepest chasms of the earth where even the most minuscule (or what we might think are minuscule) of opportunities exist. On March 22nd there is a “Boys Open House” at Lake View. By participating in that or even showing up to poke fun at the guys’ dirty bathrooms/ Buzz Lightyear sheets, that is a way that you are staying involved. Being involved means to be actively engaging in activities that make you mingle with something other than your own thoughts and contributing some positive vibes to your given situation. So, when you think about it, staying involved really isn’t that hard. There are several reasons why staying involved is so important, especially as a student; but the reason I feel is the most important, is that when you stayed involved you are able to fosters positive bonds with people which forms a supportive community. Staying involved can be so rewarding because it does help alleviate stress in the areas that are dripping with it. You are able to, even if it is for an hour or two, take your mind off of that paper you should have started two weeks ago, but haven’t. It is so important to be involved because you have something to offer this campus that other people may lack, be it passion, your vibrant smile, your technically inclined mind, the way you laugh, or even by helping the gym newbies who have no clue how to use the equipment (can you relate to this?). These things are simple, but you are involving yourself in some way that can make the world of difference on campus, and on you. Staying involved embodies everything from being SA president to supporting the basketball team with snapchat videos and cheering them on. Stay involved. Don’t let the statement scare or intimidate you. Involve yourself in the way you feel most comfortable and don’t let the stereotypical modes of involvement stop you.
NO PLAN B BY ASHIA LENNON What if I gave you a scenario of no escape? You are stuck and there is absolutely no way out. Sounds like the middle of semester dilemma; it’s too late to drop the course. The motivation to carry on is getting old and somewhere between the excitement for another year you are waking up with dread. Dreading another quiz, another paper, another essay, another 80 min lecture. You are a long way from poinsettias and a cozy haven of Christmas break but half way to the excitement of the sun kissed adventures of summer. Half your grades you’ve received and either you’ve been championing through, or you need a miracle to pass the next half. It’s frustrating, disappointing, depressing even. You know it’s inevitable and in a most melodramatic way you can feel it figuratively and quite literally… Winter is never ending. What if I told you your spring is coming! You’ve had the secret weapon, the antidote all along. It’s your perspective. Will your situation change? Nope! But you will. Pull back the dark dreary blinds on your school experience and open the window to your new perspective. I remember reading about a marriage counsellor who suggested that one of the problems with our society is that we work mainly on our feelings - on whether or not we "feel" like doing something. When we've lost a feeling for something we discard it. For example, we believe that "if I feel love for you I will act in a loving way." The counsellor's premise is the opposite - it is this - if I act in a loving way, my love feeling will grow. And so he recommends to his clients various "caring exercises" to do each day - one of which is of course - the expression of appreciation and gratitude - of thanksgiving. We’ve got to push through. We will wake up and attack the world because we’ve got super powers as it says in Isaiah 40:30-31 “Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” We have an indestructible hope, not only for heaven but when Jesus comes. We have the hope that as we journey through our lives Christ is with us. And He lays blessings along our path. Our perspective must change from staring at the potholes in our walk but upward to the miracles of stars. I firmly believe that I will miss 90% of my opportunity to receive a blessing if I am not paying attention. We will stay in our sinkholes of darkness unless we but look up. This part is extra important… Wave your white flag! Seek help seek it now. Whether it is emotional support or you desperately need to book a tutor session, the time is now. I remember my aunt once said to me, procedure in life as if all of the powers of heaven were working on your behalf. May you have hope and freedom from your darkness and may you be awakened to the renewal awaiting you. It is not too late!
Step 91: Develop your own opinions
LIFE
There is a group of people who dedicate themselves full-time to telling you what you should think about news, politics, and other information. They are called pundits, or commentators, or analysts, or columnists. Make sure that you don’t confuse them with journalists, because they aren’t the same thing. Developing your own opinion is great, but it can only be done properly when you’ve taken in all the facts, digested them, and then weighed them according to your values in your own mind. This should be your method: Take in facts®process/analyze according to your own personal value set and belief system®form opinion
This should not be your method: Take in opinion from media, parent, or significant other®regurgitate opinion from media, parent, or significant other to anyone who will listen, then sloppily defend it to the bitter end. When you watch a news channel, you should be able to discern what is actually news versus what is an opinion-yelling party. The latter make you stupider every time you watch them. So don’t.

Beat in eggs, milk and vanilla (mixture will look slightly curdled). Stir in flour mixture until just moistened (batter should be lumpy). Gently stir in blueberries. Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups, filling each nearly full. In a small bowl, combine the 1 tablespoon sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle sugar mixture over batter. Bake in a 350 degree F oven 25 to 30 minutes (standard) or 35 to 40 minutes (jumbo) or until golden and a wooden toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean. Cool in muffin cups on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Remove from muffin cups; serve warm. Makes 16 standard or 6 jumbo muffins.

1 Set in the post-apocalyptic United States, this videogame follows the lives of Ellie and Joel as they try to survive and find a possible cure for a zombie like plague that has ravished the country. 2 Steal some cars, do some heists. 3 Fit some oddly shaped boxes with other shaped boxes. Pretty sure there’s an app for that. 4 I hear you’re the dragon-born. I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow to the knee. 7 You get your own pod, place stickers on items, and play in some pretty cool worlds. You’re made of yarn. Sorta.
