START AT THE VERY BEGINNING
“
I know there is a project you have had in your mind for a while, but you cannot find the motivation to get started, or you are afraid that the outcome will not be what you planned. Here are some tips...
”
Julie Andrews taught us long ago that starting at the very beginning was a very good place to start. She sang about ABC’s and Do Re Mi’s … a very easy way to remember to write or sing. When I was first asked to write an ongoing column for clutch, I was flattered, of course, but a little nervous. I mean, seriously, me? I don’t have any formal training for any project I have ever taken on, from sewing to decorating, cooking to … well, writing! I have primarily made up the rules as I went along. In fact, I follow very few of the “rules” of the aforementioned talents I luckily possess. It wasn’t until a friend of mine was asked if she was nervous about running her third half-marathon that things were totally put into perspective. Her response was perfect, and it provided me with much insight into why I am able to do what I do each day. She said, “Yes, I’m always nervous at the starting line, but then I look around at the hundreds of other [runners] and a calmness comes over me.” That’s it! You see, I love creating things for others, whether that means making them a custom handbag, helping them build a seasonal wardrobe, or decorating their home. So, what makes it possible? Those who surround and support me! Those who see my talent and love it! Those who don’t care what the “rules” say or what the “cool people” think … they just take me as I am. That is why I am the luckiest gal in the world. I get to do what I love every day, and now I get to share that with all of you. And, I have even been known to sing or “whistle while I work,” but that is another musical all together.

END OF SUMMER
FIESTA
What better way to celebrate the end of summer and return to school than with a backyard fiesta? This menu is meant to be simple in preparation, so that you can enjoy the afternoon with family + friends. If you have two slowcookers, you can cook both the beans and carnitas overnight before the party ‌ making duties on the day-of very minimal. Alternatively, both can be made the day before and reheated. All Photos by Andrea Hubbell Photography

Vintage Diaries Reflections From Yesteryear
A VETERAN LOVE The Story of Charlie & Mary Basile
Sitting in her wheelchair wearing a simple button down dress of blue, Mary Basile is a small woman with a soft voice. As she adjusts her chair to accommodate her hearing aid, Mary sits, quiet and unassuming, surrounded by pictures of days gone by. Even her 1940’s wedding photograph graces a wall and shows her in a regal, Grace Kelly style gown, next to her young, veteran husband. Pictures of her family adorn the dresser top in the room she shares with her husband, Charlie, at a retirement community at Smith Mountain Lake. Born Mary Sciarabba, she grew up in a bilingual home. “To my mother we spoke Italian; to my father we spoke English,” she reminisces. Mary’s father went to night school to learn English and for citizenship classes, and she still remembers him coming home holding a small American flag. Her mother, however, did not become an American citizen until well after Mary’s father had passed away. According to Mary, “She was afraid of being interviewed.” Mary’s father died when she was 20, leaving her mother, two sisters, and herself to look out for one another.

Mary and Charlie are first generation Sicilian/Italian. Their Italian roots are celebrated when they gather with their family, and their Christmas Eve dinner is full of traditions. According to Mary, the best part of marriage is “being together, with the children, with the grandchildren.” About a dozen times a year, Mary and Charlie get to see their family. The Basile’s celebrated sixty-five years of marriage this year. As childhood neighbors, they grew up next door to each other in Brooklyn, New York. They both graduated from Brooklyn Tech before joining the work force. Charlie joined the army, and his military service includes being on the Queen Mary and time in Omaha Beach and Normandy. Charlie states that there were, “a lot of battles ... fighting till the end of the war.”

You see, these weapons that many World War II veterans brought home were not souvenirs purchased on the streets; they were possessions that were confiscated as Japanese soldiers surrendered, and many were handmade art pieces. Although his grandfather brought back the swords, these relics are heirlooms from another family … the family of the soldier who surrendered the weapon in the mid-1900s. “I found out about the swords before I was even allowed to touch them,” Paul reflects. What seemed perfect was that his grandfather had four grandsons (Paul and his two brothers, along with their cousin), so each boy was destined to receive one of these heirlooms. As a child, Paul remembers being curious. “My brothers and I would sneak downstairs into the basement when my dad was gone,” he reminisces. One story proves this point. With a background in filmmaking, Paul decided to document the process, but knowing where to start was overwhelming. “As soon as I started researching it, I did not know where to begin. There were so many different websites and links,” he recollects. It was then that Paul began to casually tell a fellow cinematographer, Brad Bennett, about his project. The potential for a documentary intrigued Brad, but what really piqued his interest was

It was also interesting to hear that the Japanese students were not taught much about World War II. “They [the Japanese] never really dealt with the war because it was a surrender. We have it plastered everywhere … movies, books and such, but World War II is not taught in great detail in Japan,” stated Paul. Brad cautioned, “Surrendering was the worst thing that they could do. They put those surrender tags on them because they wanted them back. That sword is a generational thing … they lost an heirloom.” “My brothers so easily gave me their swords. These swords were collecting dust. I feel like they need to be on display. We have relics from history that no one will otherwise ever know anything about. Urbane Folklore Virginia. My favorite state. Granted, I haven’t been to all 50 states, but Virginia has everything that I love. The gorgeous scenery alone will keep me here forever, not to mention the mountains, beaches, wildlife, history and old cities just to name a few. Sure, we may not have the biggest cities or be on the exact cutting edge of music, fashion, or art; but there are definitely still ways to enjoy those things in our small, homey towns. I’m here to share with you how I live my little life here in the heart of Virginia.
FASHION: I have always loved fashion. Creating my own style and wearing things that are different has been very important to me for a long time. I do not especially enjoy working out, but I do like being fit. So I have found a way to cheat that doesn’t involve a pill or any product that can be ordered from a late-night infomercial for three easy payments. Here’s my big secret: it’s having fun. I have found that if I am having fun and trying something new, I push myself harder than when I am doing the same old boring routine in the weight room while the meatheads around me ogle their flexed muscles in the wall-to-wall mirrors. Seriously, I think they would date their own biceps if they could. Anyway, my latest search for “funwith-a-side-of-fitness” led me to Williamsburg where a new treetop zip line adventure course recently opened called Go Ape. It sounded fun, plus it had the potential to heal one of my deepest childhood wounds. (Excuse me while I lay on the therapist’s couch with the back of my hand resting dramatically on my forehead for this next part of the story). Growing up, one of my dad’s many awesome ideas was to build the neighborhood’s greatest tree fort. And what kid doesn’t love a good tree fort, or any kind of fort for that matter? My sisters and I talked and dreamed about it so much that we had it all laid out in our heads. Unfortunately, we learned that my dad is more of a visionary than a doer, and year after year slipped by without the first plank being nailed up for our kingdom in the trees. We’ve been walking around (on the ground, sadly) with sequoiasized holes in our hearts ever since!

The Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center exists to offer hope and answers to women with unplanned pregnancies by administering holistic care. That is quite a mission statement! They are a medical clinic, which provides free and confidential services such as pregnancy tests and limited obstetrical ultrasounds to verify pregnancy. The BRPC also offers peer counseling in addition to parenting and life skills classes, all at no cost to the women who utilize their services.

We are not collecting funds or soliciting in any way, but after our friends, coworkers and family members see us in the same attire day after day (when that’s not the norm!), the opportunity arises to acquaint others with our cause and the purpose of Onetober.

APPS TO HELP MANAGE YOUR FAMILY
Mise en Place: The Well Placed Home
Mise en place is a French term literally meaning “to put in place. For me it simply means having a place for everything and everything in its place. This is one of the oldest organizing truisms around but so important to consider as we do our best to keep our homes running smoothly and efficiently. With the smart phones on the market today and the multitude of organizational apps available, our phones can be a true asset to us as we seek to manage our homes. As a wife, mother, and homemaker, my phone is fast becoming my virtual household binder. Juggling kids, family, friends, workouts, shopping, and household needs can be overwhelming. A good organizational system is the key to managing everything, and all that I really need to efficiently run my home is conveniently located on one mobile device. There are multitudes of apps available with calendars, schedules, to-do lists, and note capabilities, and many are accessible across multiple devices allowing several family members access.

AMOUR BÉBÉ for the love of baby
We all know how the story goes: Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love, get married, and live happily ever after. The end. But wait, there’s more: A few years later, girl is surprised by nausea and begins having unexplainable food cravings -- often insisting boy make midnight runs to the nearest Chic-fil-A for orders of milkshakes and chicken fingers. Nine months pass, and suddenly, baby makes three. Holding her beautiful, screaming babe in her arms, the girl anxiously wonders, “Oh my, what now?” And so, motherhood begins. On April 13 of this year, my life was forever changed as my husband and I welcomed our first child — a precious baby boy, Brock Eoin Douglass – into the world. After 17 (million or at least that’s how it felt) hours of intense, exhausting labor— my once-orderly world was turned upside down, leaving me with a beautiful mess of sleepless nights, midnight (2 AM, 4 AM, 6AM...) feedings, naptime snuggles, endless diaper changes, and laundry baskets overflowing with soiled baby onesies, burp cloths, and diapers (yes, I’m a proud, cloth diapering momma). I had set forth into motherhood confident in nothing except my desire to love this little boy with all of my heart, and to try and be the best mother I possibly can to my son, which I believe is ultimately all any of us can do. You’d think that the nine months of pregnancy preceding my child’s birth would have given me adequate time to prepare for this beautiful expansion in our family, but the truth is, I don’t believe that any amount of time — or my Nook library filled with the latest parenting “how to” best sellers I’d read —could ever have prepared me for the overwhelming feelings of love, exhaustion, pride, and yes, sometimes even pure frustration, that I would experience. While the role of the child’s father is just as important in the years to come — and I am so very grateful for the support and help of my own loving husband through all of this — when our babies need immediate comfort, it is we as mothers who must provide and fulfill this need. While I have definitely experienced a few “what have I gotten myself into” moments — as I would imagine any new mom has — the immense joy of parenthood far outshines any moments of frustration, and I wouldn’t trade a single moment to return to a time before our son arrived. In my few, short months as a new mother, I have come to realize and embrace the fact that motherhood isn’t a destination, rather a journey strewn with failure and success; a role of honor and beautiful responsibility, and with each new day comes the opportunity to

There is a saying that goes “pretty is what you are, beauty is what you do with it”, which rings so true. After all, as a society we are always contrasting the physical, outward beauty with the more important inner beauty of a woman. Hence the purpose for, a column designated to taking ladies who shine from the inside and giving them a little lift on the outside. This issue, we are focusing on two ladies who are in a phase of life where taking care of themselves is not at the top of the list ... a single mom and a single mom-to-be, who are embarking on the most important job of all. Approaching this first edition of clutch, Emily and I wanted to do something really special to kick it off, so we decided to spoil two single moms with some pampering because every mom works hard, and single moms harder than most. Both girls received spa services (massages, pedicures and eye treatments!) and hair and makeup treatments in addition to a fun photo session afterwards. Here is what we did.
