The struggle is real Oversized sweaters. Aren’t they fabulous? Throw one on with the perfect pair of skinny jeans, and you’re not only stylish but comfortable, too. Sometimes, too comfortable. You eat right. You exercise. Some areas just won’t go away. The fall and winter months make it so easy to cover-up those trouble spots. Sadly, sweater weather doesn’t last forever. Here’s the deal... It doesn’t have to.

LIVING BEAUTIFULLY
THE ART OF COZINESS Winter is tough to get through! It gets dark earlier, we have to bundle up in layers to keep warm, and we’re missing the glow of the radiant sun. The best way to fight off the winter blues is to embrace the crisp chill in the air and try a few (or all) of my top 5 winter trips to help you stay toasty inside and out.

Pet Ponderings
BOARDING YOUR PET ‘Tis the season for holiday travels, which may or may not include your beloved pet. Oftentimes pets need to be boarded, and here are some questions to ask when considering a boarding facility. What vaccines are required? Many facilities require vaccines to be current. Make sure to update vaccines and get a copy from your veterinarian to supply to the boarding facility. The core vaccines for dogs are rabies, distemper, parvovirus and adenovirus. Many

to minimize stress to cats. You can evaluate smells/ventilation, noise levels, lighting and sanitation. Look for sprinklers in case of a fire. It’s important to see the area your pet will be walked to ensure safety of enclosure, cleanliness and traction.

Depending on the level of care needed and your pet’s specific issue, a
facility or a pet sitter. Care.com is one website that allows you to see available local sitters. How are emergencies handled? Make sure to leave any emergency contact information and numbers for yourself and your veterinarian. It’s important to know how the facility will proceed if there is a problem or concern and what they do if for some reason they cannot reach you. How do I find a quality kennel? Ask your veterinarian for a list or recommendation. Ask friends and relatives where they have gone and how their pets were once they came home. Go and visit the kennel yourself to ask all the questions above. A little time researching and visiting can ensure a more peaceful stay for your pet and help you relax, knowing their care is in good hands. Asking these questions can help you choose the right facility and ensure that you and your pet have a happy, healthy winter.

Thoughts For January...

LIVING WITH YOUR WORD OF THE YEAR Photos by Liz Cook Photography
So, you’ve sat down, you’ve reflected on life, you have chosen your “word of the year” for 2018. And now…you are stuck. Maybe you have chosen a word in the past only to forget about it by March, or maybe this is your first time selecting a particular word for the year and you have no idea what to do next. Settling on your word can be a wonderful way to focus in on your priorities and goals, but only if you actually focus. I’ve been choosing a word of the year for five years now with varying degrees of success. Here are some of my favorite ways to incorporate my word into everyday life.
ONE WORD I stumbled across the idea of choosing a word of the year a few years back, when my mother talked about it in a family email. The idea is to choose a word you want to focus on and put into action in your life over the next twelve months. The word can be an action word or something more passive; it’s all about selecting a word that is a good fit for your life and your season. In the past, my husband and I have chosen our word together - one that we want our family to focus on: space, cultivate, enough, and in 2017 our word has been abide. One year my mother chose the word story. Take some time to sit and think about where you want to be next year and choose a word to focus on that will move you in that direction.

Ladies, how many of you are gamers? According to the Entertainment Software Association’s 2016 report on gaming habits in America, women ages 18 and older comprise a significantly greater portion of the gaming

population (31%) than boys ages 18 and younger (17%). This statistic may surprise you, but when you consider the myriad of video games available today and the increasing prevalence of female designers and programmers in the video game industry, it’s no wonder that more women game now than ever before. Video games, specifically role-playing games (RPGs), have come a long way since the 1980s. RPGs are games in which the player assumes the role of a character in a fictional setting. Although I have a soft spot for vintage consoles and games, my favorite RPGs were all released within the last ten years. In addition to more advanced technology - which means better graphics - modern RPGs also boast better storylines, deeper interactions with non-player characters (NPCs), and more believable cause-and-effect scenarios. These factors combined make for an immersive, meaningful gaming experience. Whether you’re interested in gaming but aren’t sure where to start or you’re a seasoned gamer looking for recommendations, here are some of my favorite RPGs. Game on, fellow geeky girls!

– largely because of this game! Years ago, my sister and I spent a whole summer playing The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on our Super Nintendo, and Breath of the Wild (2017) takes me back to those fond memories while also dazzling me with unbelievable graphics, immersive gameplay, the Switch’s unique and effective controls setup, and an exciting new storyline. You play as Link, who has awoken from a deep slumber and initially remembers nothing of his heroic past. My favorite part is figuring out, by trial and error, what ingredients to cook together to produce a beneficial (or even palatable) meal.
even the most casual gamer due to its gorgeous art style and sweet, fairytale-like storyline. Available on PS3, PS4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC, this game tells the tale of Aurora, a duke’s daughter, and her harrowing plight to free the sun, moon, and stars from the evil Queen of Night’s clutches. The battle gameplay is very clever and requires strategy to achieve optimal results, but even during its more difficult moments, the game is rarely frustrating. All in all, this is a beautiful game that doesn’t take too long to complete but will likely have a profound effect on you.

where to go when you’re sick Everyone knows that feeling, when you’re going through tissues faster than Hulu shows on a sleepless night. Maybe you’re collecting more cough drop wrappers on the side table than pins on your Pinterest boards. Whatever the case may be, you’re ready for it to be over. When you’re sick or in pain, you just want relief from the discomfort and peace of mind about what’s wrong. However, how do you know if you should visit urgent care or an emergency department? According to a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, as high as 27.1 percent of emergency department visits could have been treated at an urgent care center. The details below can help provide a little guidance when choosing the most appropriate means of care for you. Emergency departments are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to serve people who are seriously injured or ill and require immediate care. Urgent care offers a convenient walk-in option for non-emergency issues. These centers often have extended weekday and weekend hours. Similar to urgent care, but narrower in scope, virtual visits allow you to be seen by a boardcertified physician from the comfort of your home — with no wait time. These services can allow physicians to conduct the consultation, give a diagnosis,

AGING ASSESSMENT As a twenty-something, I have seen my parents transition into the role of caregiver, not only for myself and my siblings, but also for a few of my grandparents. I’ve been amazed by their compassion and patience. When we live far away from elderly parents, it can be hard to assess how they are faring as they age. A visit home during the holidays is a great opportunity to look for certain clues to make sure loved ones are still able to live comfortably and safely at home. Seeing my parents go through this assessment process firsthand, I thought others would benefit from planning for the holiday season. According to Brian K. Unwin, M.D., chief of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Carilion Clinic, there are three key factors that can affect whether or not elderly loved ones can remain in their home independently and safely: home, health and finances.

When you come across a piece of clothing that fits
jump on the trendy train, pair graphic tees with chic looks. For example: a midi skirt, a rock & roll tee and high heels combine for a killer look, giving off both cool and comfort vibes. Trench coats – If you do not own a trench, get one now! Trench coats can be worn year-round, and truth be told, with all of the new styles of trenches out here, you can’t go wrong with having one of each. There’s the classic beige trench, belted trenches, short trenches, long trenches, full skirt trenches, trenches with embroidered details or oversized pockets, and even the lightweight duster, waterfall or kimono trench. You truly can’t go wrong with a trench, even if it comes in a different color or is updated with details. The LBS (Little Black Suit) – Lots of style experts always suggest buying a little black dress that is multi-purpose and flattering. I, on the other hand, totally suggest you go for a little black suit. Yes, dresses are cool, but suits for women? So much cooler. Look for a simple black bottom, like a straight cigarette pant and a fitted blazer to match. At my college graduation, all the girls looked beautiful in their white dresses. I, however, traded in my white dress for a white suit (a cropped ankle pant and ¾ sleeved blazer). So if you’re looking to spice up your “black tie” look, go for a two-piece. Try the latest trend in pants or blazers. For example: ditch the
straight-leg and go for a wide-leg suit pant. If you’re daring, go for the pajama pant or a floral print (yes top AND bottom in floral print). The more choices, the better, because that’s the beauty of two-piece suits - you can always mix & match! It totally works and it’s cooler than the LBD. Resolve to start your own collection of repeat pieces. Figure out what it is that you mostly wear depending on your lifestyle. I would love to see which items you love buying over and over.
