MINDING HER BUSINESS Rebekah Moody
Our homes are a place of rest and nurturance, a safe area for our children to discover the world and an extension of our hearts to our guests. And beautiful memories built inside our homes are as irreplaceable as our families. Our homes Rebekah with one of her transformations in progress.
reflect our hearts.
Rebekah Moody thrives on crafting fresh, inviting atmospheres in well-worn spaces— the ideal backdrop for life and family memories. Through Southern Provisions Company, she creates stunning home interiors while offering quality gifts and a unique decorating experience. It is a perfect blend of professional design with a warm, hometown touch. “I started sewing when I was six-years-old, and took to it,” Rebekah recounted. “I was raised outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and nobody really knew what a designer or decorator was. If you wanted curtains, you would sit down and make curtains.” As a real estate agent, Rebekah walked through hundreds of houses, noting what did and didn’t enhance each home. She started flipping houses, doing the design work herself. Fast forward several years and she had moved to Lynchburg and married “an absolute sweetheart of a man.” “My grandmother needed to live with us,”

What projects keep you excited about moving forward? I’m most passionate about taking a space that has been abandoned, and that people think should be torn down, and then making it into something beautiful. That’s what drives me, and it is super fun. What obstacles did you overcome in the early days of your business? One of the hurdles along the way was establishing my retail sales points, and learning what I can and can’t compete against. A question for any entrepreneur starting out is, What can I actually make money at, so that I’m not decorating everyone’s home in Lynchburg and also paying for it? Once you establish that, then you can go from doing it as a hobby to doing it as a job. How do you stay inspired in the midst of the daily grind? We purposefully keep a stress-free environment. Everyone here knows that our foremost commitment is to the client, and to the client having a good experience. I am extremely
for a larger home. I realized that I needed to bring my level of decorating up. I went into a design shop and thought, I can’t believe that custom work is this expensive.” She went home, had her $10 Singer sewing machine fixed for $5 and started sewing curtains, pillows and other things for her home. She did what she was raised to do. “My friends started coming into my house, asking who made the pillows and the curtains and so on, and they asked if I would make these things for them. And, I did. There wasn’t really intent of, I want a company and I want my company to do this. It was more of having a skill that people needed, so they started asking me to help them,” Rebekah explained. Recently, the in-house design company, originally Southern Loom, moved from the Boonsboro Shopping Center to the midtown area and became the Southern Provisions Company. The beautifully renovated warehouse will also be available as a meeting and dinner venue. We sat down with Rebekah to learn more about her style, her business, and what keeps her going. 8

What do you recommend for unique housewarming, wedding or baby shower gifts? I love our local artists. If I were to pick one thing, I would say get something by a local artist—from the paintings, to bowties or bags—whether they create on a small scale or a large scale, companies like Meanwhile Back On The Farm or Moore & Giles. Vietnamese Beef Skewers Ingredients •
1 lb beef sirloin, cut into strips
•
1/4 c fish sauce
•
1 T soy sauce
•
2 T brown sugar
•
1 garlic clove, minced
•
2 T lime juice (about one lime)
•
Zest of one lime
•
1/2 t red pepper flakes (optional)
•
sesame seeds, to garnish (optional)
•
sliced scallions, to garnish (optional)
Method Soak wooden sticks in water for at least 30 minutes. Meanwhile, combine fish sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, lime juice and zest, and red pepper flakes in a bowl. Toss sirloin with the marinade, and marinate for at least 30 minutes but no more than 2 hours. Skewer beef on the sticks and grill or broil at high heat to your preferred temperature, or about 4 minutes for medium-rare.
Vegetable Salad with Asian Vinaigrette For the Salad: •
1 zucchini
•
1 English cucumber
•
2 carrots
•
1 daikon radish (available at Asian markets), or 2 red radishes
•
1/2 head red cabbage, thinly sliced
•
1 bunch cilantro, roughly chopped
•
1 c fresh edamame beans, shelled
•
1/2 c roughly chopped peanuts
(in the freezer aisle)
For the Dressing:
•
1 garlic clove, minced
•
1 t soy sauce
•
1 t unseasoned rice vinegar
•
1/2 c neutral oil (grapeseed or canola)
•
1 t toasted sesame oil
•
1/2 t grated fresh ginger (opt., but recommended)
•
salt and pepper
Method To make the vinaigrette, combine the garlic, soy sauce, vinegar, and ginger (if using), and whisk in the oils slowly until combined. Taste the dressing, and add salt and pepper if needed. Using a vegetable spiralizer (or a knife, cutting vegetables into small pieces), make vegetable noodles from the zucchini, cucumber, carrots, and radish. Toss to mix with cabbage, then toss with vinaigrette. Top with cilantro, edamame, and peanuts to serve. 19
Summer Shrimp Rolls Ingredients •
4 oz rice vermicelli noodles
•
12 spring roll skins
•
24 cooked, peeled, deveined shrimp, cut in half lengthwise
•
1 bunch cilantro, roughly chopped
•
4 oz Thai basil (available at Asian markets) or Italian basil leaves, picked from the stems and roughly chopped
•
4 oz fresh mint, picked from the stems and roughly chopped
•
1 head Boston or bibb lettuce, roughly chopped
First, prepare all ingredients: •
Combine chopped basil, cilantro, mint, and lettuce in a bowl, and set aside.
•
‘Cook’ rice noodles by placing dry noodles in a bowl, and pour boiling water over them, allowing them to sit in the hot water for 2-3 minutes, or until tender. Drain the noodles in a colander and rinse with cold water until the noodles are completely cold. Set aside.
•
Prepare a large bowl or casserole dish of hot water to dip the spring roll skins in to soften them.
Then, assemble the summer rolls: •
Dip a spring roll skin in the prepared hot water for 10 seconds or until it is pliable.
• •
Lay on a flat surface, and layer with shrimp, rice noodles, and mixed greens. Roll the skin like a burrito, tucking in the sides first, then folding over the bottom flap towards the top and rolling to close. You can wet your finger with a little water to seal the roll closed if necessary.

Another myth about introverts is that they are inherently more suited to being followers than to being leaders. Leaders are not defined by
Both extroverts and introverts possess the ability to consider others’ feelings and opinions when making decisions that affect a group and to create and foster a collaborative environment. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a follower, and we should all be willing and able to follow someone else’s lead from time to time, but you don’t have to adopt it as your constant role.

WOMEN OF A CERTAIN AGE
from mom to employee If you have the chance to be a stay-at-home mom, it is a wonderful opportunity to mold and guide your children through their early years. Not everyone can afford to pause a career, but the numbers of stay-athome moms is increasing from year to year. According to Pew Research Center, the number of mothers who opted to stay home after giving birth has steadily been rising since a low in the latter part of the 20th Century. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau reports 5.2 million women stayed home to care for their children in 2015. That’s 5.2 million American women out of the workforce for anywhere from 6 weeks to several years.

Playful Parenting HELPING CHILDREN STAY FOCUSED AT SCHOOL Teachers put together lesson plans and schools purchase curriculum to prepare young minds for the future. Yet so much of a child’s success depends on their ability to concentrate so they can learn and retain important information. Regardless of age, every child is learning all the time, and a few simple steps and changes at home can help them focus and get the most from their education.
Fostering good sleep hygiene. Helping a child develop consistent sleep patterns is important to their mental focus and overall health. While sleep needs can range from eight to 16 hours depending on age, creating habits for quality sleep are universal: • Encourage a consistent bedtime each day. • Avoid excessive sleeping in on weekends. • Avoid caffeine after lunch. • Do not read or use electronic devices in bed. • Offer children a bedtime snack, but avoid large meals before sleep.

FLOURISH healing arts Most people can recall a time that listening to music or looking at paintings improved their mood, but can art improve physical well-being too? According to the American Journal of Public Health, it definitely can. A 2010 reviewof the literature studying the connections between art, healing and public health found that music engagement, visual arts therapy, movement-based creative expression and expressive writing all had positive results.

WEARABLE VINTAGE
INSPIRATION FOR FASHIONABLE LOOKS Let’s face it. Vintage is fun and unique, but sometimes it’s hard to put together an outfit that doesn’t look like you stepped out of an era! Pairing your 1960s dress with go-go boots and bouffant hair is a bit too much, but there is a way to modernize your look while wearing true vintage. Clutch had the pleasure of helping organize a fashion show at Vintage Lynchburg, and the featured looks were wearable and fun while giving nods to fashion from the past. So whether you choose to wear head-to-toe vintage or just pick bits and pieces to add into your wardrobe, here is some inspiration for your own sense of thrifted looks from past eras.
