When it came to decorating a nursery, Haley picked a “Native American meets local” theme for Addison’s nursery, which offers a sense of adventure for the baby boy. Haley stated, “I have always dreamed of decorating a nursery and had slowly begun gathering a few gender neutral items over the last couple of years. It was quite simple to go with natural decor that would grow up with Addison fairly easily.” The Pavaos live in a 1950s home, which is short on storage. Creatively incorporating cubbies and ledges, along with utilizing the wall space, aided in finding a place for books and collectibles. Adding a little extra seating in the form of an old Sears cart, which will eventually function as a toddler bed, also makes Addison’s room a great place to spend time when his cousins visit.

Adam’s Advice For New Dads I didn’t know what I was doing when Addison was born. The truth is, I still don’t. I frequently call Haley a wizard because she can magically walk in the room, pick up Addison, and he settles down. There is just something about mom that makes everything okay. Encourage her. Support her. Love her beyond her expectations. She deserves it, and so does your baby.

Haley’s Advice For New Moms Grace! Every day give yourself grace. Managing another little life whether working or at home - is a life altering responsibility. Don’t be so hard on yourself. That baby was given to you, so take your time, learn what your baby wants, and roll with it! It is such a privilege to raise a child; I am forever changed by this journey of loving Addison.

You can pack a first aid kit with bandage materials, topical medications and oral mediations that may help your pet with pain, allergic reactions or digestive upset. Discuss with your vet specific medications to know which are safe and necessary for your travels. Be prepared for motion sickness and nausea. Does your dog get nauseous on car rides? There is a medication you can get from your veterinarian called Cerenia (maropitant citrate) that can help your dog with motion sickness. It is available in tablet form, and can be given to your dog on an empty stomach two hours before traveling. Plan ahead! Plan your route and overnight stays in advance. It’s important to know if your destination is pet friendly and what pet services are

available. If you are hiring a petsitter or boarding your pet, make sure to leave contact information and instructions on what to do in an emergency.

With advanced planning, traveling with your pet can be enjoyable, fun, and help to create wonderful, long-lasting memories.

Obtain a certificate of veterinary inspection. Are you going out of state for an extended period of time or flying with your pet? Depending on the circumstances, it may be important or mandatory that you obtain an official health certificate from your veterinarian stating your pet is healthy and vaccinated. This is usually required within 10 days of travel. You will also need a copy of their rabies certificate. Certain states and countries also require further documentation, testing or procedures. Before traveling, be sure to check out what different states and countries require at

CAR TEMPERATURE SAFETY CHART Running into a store for “just a minute” can be fatal to a pet left in the car, even when the temperature does not seem that hot outside.

http://www.aphis.usda.gov. Be sure that your pet’s vaccinations are current. Any dog or cat over four months of age that is traveling into the state of Virginia is required by law to have a current rabies vaccination. Boarding facilities usually have immunization requirements to make sure your pet is safe from contagious diseases. Travel with copies of your pet’s vaccine and health history records and the contact information for your veterinarian, if needed. Try to minimize the stress on your pet. Pack your pet’s normal food, and don’t change their diet during travel to avoid digestive upsets. Carry water, bowls, bedding, toys, treats and other items that

will comfort your pet during travel. Remember to take plastic bags for picking up after bathroom breaks. Pet wipes or waterless shampoo can assist with cleaning pets and their dirty paws. If your dog or cat gets extremely anxious or nervous during a trip, there are medications available to help. Options should be discussed and tried prior to the trip to determine what will work best. One product that can help with cats is Feliway spray. This can be sprayed onto bedding and inside the carrier 30 minutes before travel (and daily) to help your cat feel less stressed. Make sure your pet has identification and restraints. Make sure you can control your pet by packing collars, harnesses and leashes. Double check that tags have current phone numbers and contact information. Microchipping your pets is an important consideration in case they are lost or stolen. Have appropriate carriers, crates, pens and gates for providing comfort, safety and exercise. Safety seats and harnesses can be purchased for your pet to keep them contained or restrained during driving. Pack first aid supplies for your pet. DI-WHY NOT

PATRIOTIC SUMMER WREATH

Summer is the perfect time to celebrate with patriotic decor, especially with upcoming holidays such as Memorial Day, the 4th of July and Labor Day. Whether you are honoring a special day or recognizing a family member’s military service, craft a red, white and blue wreath for your door, mantel or office.

SUPPLIES • 16” wire wreath form • 1/2 yard each of red, white, & blue fleece • Rotary cutter, quilter’s ruler and cutting mat (or a ruler and scissors)

METHOD 1 Cut each color of fleece into 1” x 6” strips. 2 The wire wreath is divided into eight segments. Three segments will be blue with white “stars.” Three segments will be red and two will be white. Starting with red, tie strips of fleece to the form, one at a time. 3 Fill in one section of the wreath completely with red strips and the next completely with white strips. Continue alternating colors until three red and two white sections are filled.

13

4

The remaining three wreath segments will be blue with

white strips added to form “stars.” Start by adding four rows of blue to one section. On the fifth row, alternate blue with white strips, and then add two more rows of blue strips. On the next row, alternate white with blue strips. Add two more rows of blue strips. After that, add a row alternating blue with white strips, then add two rows of blue strips, and then add a row alternating white with blue strips. Continue with pattern until the three sections are nearly filled. End the third section with four blue strip rows. 55

Hang your wreath and enjoy!

FINDING FERTILITY

Flourish

INCREASE YOUR FERTILITY If you have been trying to conceive for a couple of months with no luck, Dr. Evans-Hoeker noted that there are a few things you can do on your own to help increase your fertility. 1. Have intercourse frequently. Studies have shown that reproductive efficiency increases with the frequency of intercourse and is highest when it occurs every one to two days. 2. Take advantage of the fertile window. The fertile window for most women spans the six-day interval ending on the day of ovulation. Most couples believe they should wait until the day of ovulation to have sex, but this is a common misconception. For many women with regular menstrual cycles, intercourse every one to two days during the fertile window can help maximize conception. Photos byJeffrey C Gleason Photography

Women of a Certain Age

ENDURING LOVE In an era of “starter marriages” and a still-high divorce rate, I’m thankful that my husband and I are about to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. Even though it hasn’t been all sunshine and roses, we have experienced a long, slow, comfortable climb through life. It’s fun going through life with someone whose company I enjoy and whose opinion I value. I don’t believe in the concept of “soul mates.” In other circumstances – say, for example, we had each gone to a different college and never met – we might have married other people. But we did find each other: I was working

DIFFERENT SPENDING HABITS Although money arguments can cause friction in a marriage, I think it’s probably best if marriage partners are not both big spenders or both tightwads. I’m a tightwad, my husband is not. We discuss what big-ticket items we’ll buy; if it’s a treat (other than an appliance or furniture), we’ll buy it for ourselves for Christmas.

COMPROMISE Unless they’re clones, no two people will agree on everything all the time. Learn to find balance in your lives – when to stick to your guns, and when it’s best to say, “Yes, what you suggest would be better.” You learn to pick your battles. Summer Fashion

20

‘Tis the season to freshen up your wardrobe and test out a new piece or two. Whether you choose to stick with the classics or try a different style, accessorizing and following a few trends can help formulate the right look for you this summer.

Menswear No matter the occasion or season, you can not go wrong with a clean, white oxford. For the summer, the goal is to always look for style, functionality, and simplicity. A crisp, white dress shirt anchors a look and establishes a foundation for accent pieces. These are great styles for any man aspiring to re-establish his inner gentleman.

Mix it up by wearing a combination of warm tones with pastels. A pair of denim jeans is a staple for any man’s closet. Adding a uniquely colored jacket and a pop of color with a pocket square expresses fashion, yet keeps the look simple at the same time. The addition of a Mad Men-esque skinny tie completes the look. Tie - it’s FOUND vintage Of course, in the summer, the white shirt can be paired with brown loafers and a matching belt. The bow tie adds a gentleman’s touch that coincides with the plaid designed shorts. Just be sure to roll up the sleeves for casual appeal. Bow Tie - Twenty23

21

Again, jeans and a lightly rolled oxford take center stage. Adding a vest to show off those shoulders can be very easy on the eyes. Having a colorful lapel pin will express a bold accent piece and keep the look cohesive, yet interesting. Bow Tie - it’s FOUND vintage

Womenswear Try a bright, new color. Yellow is making a comeback this season in a bold and beautiful way, especially warm golden yellows. Think canary, honey, marigold, and dandelion. It is important to make sure you choose the right hue for your skin tone, so try it on and see how it works for you. If it washes you out, don’t get it. If it gives your skin a brightness and lovely glow and just makes you smile, then you have a winner! To add a bohemian vibe, which is still on trend for this summer, try mixing lacy and flowing items to the outfit like this lace kimono vest and top it all off with gold jewelry to match. You’re sure to feel comfortable and happy in this outift. Clothing and Belt - Gladiola Girls Handbag and Tie - it’s FOUND vintage Jewelry - Storm & Stress

Mix styles and textures. Mixing vintage items and modern pieces is

a refreshing way to do fashion. Try to find vintage pieces that make a statement, like this fuchsia, suede, high waisted skirt and wear it with simple pieces, such as this white crop top. Also look for pieces with great textures to mix and match. The soft look of the suede skirt and the waffle texture of the shirt compliment each other in an aesthetically pleasing way. Have fun mixing bright colors together by adding a small touch of another color. For fuchsia, add a pop of turquoise, like this turquoise and quartz bangle. For other colors, think of opposing colors on the color wheel and just have fun from there! Blouse - Gladiola Girls Handbag - it’s FOUND vintage Jewelry - Storm & Stress Skirt - Out of Twig

Wear your whites and laces. Head to toe white is hugely on trend for the summer but in unique ways. It’s all about mixing different color whites, textures, and playing around with the classic white. If you’re not adventurous enough to mix whites, just look for a great white (or off white) lace dress. Try a classic style dress like this one, or venture out and find a flowing dress with a bohemian ‘70s vibe. Finish it off with jewelry of your choice and a vintage bag. Gold jewelry will really warm up and polish off the outfit, and the vintage addition will make it completely unique. Follow this trend and you will achieve an effortlessly chic look with ease. KF: You do the majority of preschool drop-offs. What’s your secret to getting everyone out of the house on time? JF: Be organized and have stuff ready to go – outfits, snacks, backpacks. JF: The hardest part is trying to spread your attention equally in all aspects of your day-to-day life - giving to your spouse, your children, your job – just all of it. KF: This year during the Super Bowl, there were a lot of commercials that featured dads in an active role in their children’s lives. What are your thoughts on this? Are you glad to see a shift in society’s expectations of dads? JF: I think it was good to see that dads were highlighted. Although not every dad is a stay-at-home dad, it’s nice to bring greater awareness that more and more men these days are playing more prominent roles in

I know there will come a day when my kids probably won’t declare with such enthusiasm, “Daddy’s home!” But for now, I’m going to soak it up every time they do. In addition to writing, Kimberly Feldcamp loves spending time with family and friends, laughing, shopping and being outdoors in the sunshine.

KF: What advice would you give to a man that’s about to become a dad for the first time? JF: Be prepared to have patience…and then more patience. Be active and present with your kids – play with them, laugh with them, let them know you’re there for them. And enjoy it.

FIND YOURSELF IN THE WOODS Many of my favorite memories are set in the outdoors, in the woods of my childhood. I grew up in New York, just an hour north of “the city” in a region known for it’s beautiful mountains and hiking opportunities, much like what we have here in Central Virginia. In fact, if you were to take the arduous journey up the Appalachian Trail, you’d pass right by my home town — less than an hour from the private dirt road I grew up on, which ran through what was just as much of a forest as it was a neighborhood. As soon as breakfast was scarfed and before our cereal bowls stopped spinning in the sink, my siblings and I would run out the back door, and rush past the row of bright yellow forsythia bushes that lined our back yard. We would spend the rest of the day making trails and building forts with the dozen-or-so other kids that lived in our veritable paradise. We lived a childhood of infinite energy and exploration, spending almost all of our unschooled hours outside with the trees and dirt. Looking back, I realize how critical this period of time was for me. It’s when I learned how to enjoy the natural world and to cooperate with a diverse set of personalities - all the while relying on no one to provide us with entertainment. It’s what set Photo by Crystal George Studios of items available at Outdoor Trails in Lynchburg

Clutch Goes Culinary

ROANOKE FOOD TOURS When it comes to eating out (which is done more often in my house than I’d like to admit, hence this being my kind of culinary column), my husband, Earl, and I enjoy experiencing local restaurants. We feel that it’s important to support the business owners in our community, plus each eatery specializes in their own unique dishes. If the idea of testing out local cuisine and tasting different dishes while learning a bit of history intrigues you, then taking a food tour just might be the ticket for a fun date or time out with friends. It’s no secret that unique fare is en vogue, whether it is through experiencing authentic ethnic delights or finding places that utilize locally sourced items to create gourmet dishes. Food tours are popping up all over in major cities, and it was on a visit to Chicago where his wife, Marty, encouraged Larry Landolt to take a food based

excursion. “We had such a good time that we did another tour the next day,” he stated. The Chicago tour made such an impression on Landolt that he began his own culinary excursions in Roanoke. Physically, it made sense since Roanoke has more restaurants per capita than any other city in Virginia. The downtown area alone boasts over fifty eateries! Choosing restaurants for the tour was a challenge, but Landolt picked ones based on location and variety to satisfy an array of tourgoer palates. Although a bit of walking is required, the tour is handicap friendly. Accommodations can also be made for food allergies if they are made known ahead of time. Although foodies may expect the journey to be all about the cuisine, the tour is peppered with interesting facts about Roanoke’s history during a walk through the city. As a place rich with tradition, heritage and landmarks, the cultural part of the tour offers a glimpse into the Roanoke of yesteryear. Your stops may differ, but our tour hit the following highlights and restaurants. We enjoyed our experience with visitors from North Carolina and Wisconsin in addition to Yorktown, Virginia. We hope that you enjoy the tour through our eyes, and maybe it will encourage you to take one of your own. Bon appétit! 11

Upholstered pieces can be recovered, and freshening up with new fabric usually won’t take away from the value of the piece. 5. Style and Design. If it speaks to you, don’t pass it by as it might be

paperwork, sentimental pieces and family heirlooms. • Contact Estates Revisited to make an appointment for them to view the items; there is no obligation or charge for this service. • Everything must be viewed and inventoried, so do not box up small items in the estate. • After the items are viewed, you will be contacted with an offer for the lot.

What is the most unusual item you have come across? Art – varied collection of taxidermy animals and a collection of antique, European paintings Joanne – Gustav Stickley desk

Flourish

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES For many of us, the cold winter weather put our exercise routines into hibernation. But with summer on the horizon, it’s now time to get back into the groove with fitness and health. These warmer temperatures and longer days are calling us to be outside, and there’s nothing better than feeling good and enjoying daily activities in the beautiful outdoors. A little exercise can go a long way, but take it slow because injuries, including sprains and strains, often occur from pushing your body too quickly. Whether hiking, jogging, weight lifting or playing competitive sports, know your limits and gradually let your body reach its potential. Here are some simple steps to avoid injuries this summer: STAY HYDRATED. Take in plenty of water each day. Drinking the right amount of fluids will prevent cramping. If you are working out for over an hour, consider a sports drink to replenish electrolytes. USE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT. Wear loose fitting clothes during workouts. Make sure your equipment – tennis shoes or even a baseball glove – fits correctly.
