Zach & Taylor A MAGICAL, WOODLAND WEDDING After meeting at Liberty University their freshman year, Zach and Taylor were inseparable. They dated for four years until Zach finally proposed during an intimate walk on the beach with Taylor. So sweet! When it came to their wedding, this couple worked together to plan a stunning event. “The phrase that came up most was that I wanted it to have an Anthropologie-esque, woodland feel. We definitely just wanted something that felt like it had our personality stamped on it,” offered Taylor. Being an artsy person, Zach was actually integrated a lot into the wedding planning. Taylor recalled, “He was unbelievably helpful in this whole process—he was decisive where I was indecisive, which made things a lot easier.” From the lovely cake to the gorgeous sea glass colored bridemaids’ dresses, their concept came together flawlessly. 10

One item of note is their ceremony backdrop. Sorella Farms has quite a few options for ceremonies, but Taylor wanted something unique. “We had never seen anyone have their ceremony with the woods framing it…so we really loved that idea, and the floral wall and petal floor gave it this magical, woodland feel” she reflected. The backdrop – made by Adam Mullins from reclaimed barn wood and covered in florals and greenery by The Arrangement Company – ended up being Taylor’s favorite part of the wedding décor. So lovely!

I DO BBQ AN INSPIRATION BOARD The rehearsal dinner is a fun time for an intimate gathering with family and friends, and in this case it’s an outdoor, tented barbecue! Christian and Jami’s event had a true southern flair, and here are some tips for your own BBQ.

Ryan & Taryn A MOUNTAINTOP ELOPEMENT You may recognize Taryn if you’ve ever been to Lynchburg’s Rivermont Pizza, and it’s actually where this couple’s story begins. Taryn works there part time, which is where Ryan caught her eye – she developed a crush, and little did she know that she had caught Ryan’s eye, too. One night he mustered up the courage to talk to Taryn. “He walked right in, sat down next to me, and introduced himself. He gave me his phone number and we've been inseparable since,” she reflected. After dating a little over a year, Ryan proposed on the Blue Ridge Parkway. They had spent so much time together in the mountains hiking and camping, that the location just seemed natural. Taryn offered, “We decided to relax and go for a drive. We stopped and picked up some wine, cheese and crackers, and brought a blanket with us. We eventually decided to stop at an overlook and have a little picnic. Then he asked me.”

As an outdoorsy couple, who is a little more on the private side, they chose an elopement because it felt natural for their personalities. “We feel most connected to God when we're in the mountains...we also knew we wanted to feel the freedom to say our vows without feeling like we were putting on a show for people, or be nervous about what others were thinking,” Taryn reminisced. Taryn spoke of the calm and peacefulness she and Ryan felt on their wedding day. “We really loved the idea of it being more intimate and personal…and it was completely that- we were able to be so present and enjoy every little moment with our focus completely on each other.” Their location of Cole Mountain offered a serene backdrop for their nuptials along with being the location of their first hike together.

GOTHIC, GLAM AFFAIR AN INSPIRATION BOARD Often used as a term in architecture or to describe dark dressing in the late 20th century, the word “gothic” now means all things glam and dreamy when it comes to weddings. If this trend appeals to you, it can be incorporated in a beautiful way. Here’s how!

EV and Josh A LITERARY DELIGHT When I think of a perfectly carried out theme, this wedding has it all. This couple incorporated books into every aspect of their wedding, and if you are wondering why...well, they actually met because of - what else? A book! "We met at Rivermont Pizza. It was late at night and I had brought a book to read, as I typically do. He had actually just finished reading it, so I talked to him instead of politely ignoring him like most guys," EV reminisced. They both are avid readers and have large personal libraries, and although their proposal doesn't center around books, it does speak a lot about their compatibility - at least as far as Josh was concerned! EV offered, "We had talked about marriage and decided that we would eventually get married but hadn't formally declared ourselves engaged. Josh is a huge Red Sox fan, and one day on a shopping trip I picked up a Red Sox t-shirt. I wore it when I went out to meet him that night, and I woke up to find he had posted a picture of me in it on Facebook and changed our relationship status to engaged." So fun! 31
As a Sweet Briar graduate, EV had spent countless hours studying in the Cochran Library. After talking to the events coordinator and librarians, they were allowed to have their wedding at the library, which is the perfect setting for this couple. After scouring Pinterest for doable, and cohesive - yet not overdone - projects, their creativity shone through on their wedding day. Oh and as for not having a cake? EV explained, "Josh hates cake, and I had taken him on a date to have a slice of pie at Woodruff's early in our relationship. When I suggested pies from Woodruff's as an alternative to cake, he was ecstatic. We ended up having 10 flavors of pie!"

ADVICE FOR THE BRIDE-TO-BE Relax and assign someone else to make decisions that day. Have someone else take care of the little problems that crop up so you don't stress out. ON BEING NEWLYWED Marriage is fantastic, but it's just a continuation of the relationship you had before. It's a commitment to continue building and growing together. 33

DIY FOREST WEDDING AN INSPIRATION BOARD If the idea of a woodland wedding appeals to you - especially if you love DIY or are on a budget - then this event is here to inspire! It’s filled with lovely, handmade elements that Kevin and Amanda had woven throughout their day. Passionate about creating and wanting a unique, financially friendly affair, this couple had a lovely day full of whimsy and ideas.

I Still Do

This 10 year vow renewal is both beautiful and meaningful, and we adore what the wife, Cami, had to say about her journey.

I met Ryan the night before Easter 2003. We were volunteers in a ministry that performed character building assembly programs in elementary schools during the week and sang in churches on the weekend. He was a staff member visiting my team traveling across the west coast. I remember the moment he walked in the door. My team was in the middle of singing "Your Grace Still Amazes Me," and I lost my breath for a second. We got to know each other over the weekend, and though our memory differs on who asked who for their number, (he totally asked for mine) we kept in touch over the remaining months of my tour. We were smitten. By July we had talked almost every day on the phone for the past four months. Ryan asked if he could fly me to visit him in Arizona so we could spend some time together in person, away from our crazy schedules. I had family near his home town and stayed with them during my visit where we had our first date. It was more like a week of spending time together, finally in person.

We dated mostly long distance for the next two years and during a visit with my family in New Jersey, Ryan proposed on June 15, 2005 on the beach in Cape May. He buried a treasure box partially in the sand with his bible inside holding my ring marking Philippians 4:6-8. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let our requests be made known to God: and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.� We were married a year later July 22, and two weeks later moved to Virginia to start school and begin our lives together. We celebrated our 10-year anniversary in 2016, the same year we moved our little family of four into our first house – the BEST anniversary present ever. 10 years of marriage has changed us a lot, and taught us a lot. We both began our marriage with a lot of unspoken expectations and not a lot of counsel. Being long distance we were together for the first time all the time, and it was a little overwhelming.
The best decision we ever made was to trust God with our marriage. Sometimes it was Ryan and sometimes it was me, but one of us had to make the conscious decision to point the other to God. A family member told us before we were married that it was better to be kind than to be right. That, along with lots, and lots, and LOTS of grace has made our marriage stronger over time. For couples who are engaged or newly married, choose each other. You will not always be on the same page or want the same things, and you will not always feel blissfully happy. But, choose to forgive and extend grace to each other. Choose to give your time and patience to each other. Choose to consider situations from each other perspectives. But mostly, choose to point each other to God by pursuing Him yourself. When each of you decide to choose these, regardless of whether the other does or not, marriage can be pretty spectacular. 46

Getting Married in VA Getting married in Virginia? Be sure to get a marriage license! You and your spouse-to-be can obtain a license through any Virginia Circuit Court Clerk. Check www.courts.state.va.us for a listing. Licenses are valid for 60 days and cost $30. Head to www.virginia.org for more detailed information on sites and officiants. You most both be 18 years old - be sure to take an actual certified copy of your birth certificate. If you're under 18, you will need notarized consent from a parent or legal guardian to tie the knot. Also take along a valid driver's license, military ID, state ID or passport for identification. Who can marry you? Great question! Be sure to get an ordained minister (who can show proof of ordination), a marriage commissioner, justice of the peace or a judge. Be sure to make getting a marriage license part of your pre-wedding plans (yes, some couples have forgotten!).
