PARTNERING WITH A PURPOSE Central Virginia Orthodontics and WarmStreets

Winter is upon us, and most of us are looking forward to cuddling up inside with a cozy blanket by the fire. Sometimes it’s the little things that make our day, but we forget that little comforts for us are impossibilities for others. We aren’t in a major metropolitan area, so we tend to think that homelessness doesn’t affect those in our community, but, in fact, it does. Just ask Rick Hughes, founder of WarmStreets. Rick has always had a heart sensitive to those in need. He attended a conference, and the speaker talked about a church that gave winter supplies to the homeless. “The little voice [inside my head] said, ‘Do that.’ So, I bought 100 polyester bags, got some FEMA approved winter emergency kits, added some other new supplies and walked the streets of Lynchburg giving the bags to the homeless folks I met,” Rick explained. WarmStreets was born, and it’s been making a difference ever since. WarmStreet’s guiding principle is, “I was cold, and you covered me,” and they partner with other area nonprofits to add to - but not replicate - their services. Word is spreading about the great work they are doing in the community... so much that other businesses are jumping on board to offer aid. One such local business is Central STREETPACK PACKING LIST Combs Cotton Swabs Deodorant

local shelters to get the ages and genders of their children. Rick said, “Within 8 hours every kid in every shelter we listed had his/her present adopted. Presents were adopted so fast, I literally just had to sit at the screen so I could delete kids already spoken for and repost the list.” One family’s heart was so touched they decided to make and sell cookies so they could adopt three presents. If you have a desire to help personally

or as a business, search “Warm Streets” on Facebook or head to www.warmstreets.org to get in touch. It’s the perfect way to do good around the holidays, keep someone warm during the winter season, or resolve to help others in the new year. As Rick perfectly stated, “If someone is down on human nature, he/she should just work with me a day and they’ll meet some wonderful human beings not only happy to help, but thanking ME for giving them a way to help!”

Jennifer believes more is accomplished together rather than separately, and she enjoys exploring new ways to do so.

WORKING TOGETHER a regional perspective There is a new type of space in town. It is part traditional office, with amenities that help inhabitants get work done. It is part coffee shop, with warmth and ambience that invite you to cozy up to your passion. It is part home office: familiar, personal and safe. It is all these things, and something so much more. It motivates and excites and helps its users find solutions. It is a coworking space, and as we greet the New Year, there are more ways than ever to get

plugged in to these dynamic spaces. Every coworking space is slightly different, each targeting a segment of their region’s innovators and creators. Some, like TOOLRY in Lynchburg, are suited for the makers and creatives. TOOLRY offers traditional coworking space - desks and plugs - while also offering studio areas for visual artists. “After working from home for about a year and a half, I found out about TOOLRY and have been hooked ever since. Home is great and cozy, but being in an intentional place for work, surrounded by people who are passionate about the things they create has been a tremendous blessing in my professional life,” says Kyle Hotchkiss, member of TOOLRY. Roanoke’s CoLab is a coworking and event space, providing offices and workspace to entrepreneurs, with a focus on technology startups. CoLab features events and programming that bring the community together to share knowledge, ask questions, and explore ideas.

BREWING UP COMMUNITY THE BEAN TREE CAFE Necessity may be the mother of invention, but innovation can also find its roots in a desire to foster community. Such is the case with Bean Tree Cafe. Nestled in the middle of Lynchburg’s bustling Cornerstone*, the area is peppered with lovely

NEW YEAR, NEW NOTEBOOK A fresh year often brings the desire to create new patterns and routines. For many, one of those habits is to document family memories either for themselves or their children. Journaling is one way to collect your thoughts and preserve your history, and you have a wide range of journaling styles to consider for 2016.

Shared Shared journals are a fun way to create a meaningful keepsake while strengthening relationships

at the same time. Journals can be shared between friends, spouses, or family members. You can buy special notebooks designed for shared journaling, or simply pick a favorite notebook to set aside for writing notes and letters back and forth. While it is most convenient to journal with people in your home, it’s in no way necessary. For years, my sisters and I had a journal we mailed among the four of us, each filling a page at a time with our thoughts, daily activities, and snap shots of our lives. The book went back and forth across the country many times before it was filled. One Happy Thought

home are great for this style of recording your life, and the limited space lets you record your thoughts without requiring a big time commitment. Keep your journal on your nightstand or in your purse, and take a minute or two every day to jot down one thing that made you smile. It can be easy to fall into the habit of recording only big, special occasion moments, but jotting something down every day will help you realize we spend most of our lives stringing together ordinary moments. Recording happiness in your daily life helps you appreciate every day. Gratitude Similar to the Happy Thought concept, gratitude journals can help encourage a positive outlook and help you record the small moments that are easy to forget. If you record three things a day for which you are thankful, you will have over 1,000 happy memories at the end of the year. Gratitude journals are the antidote to pessimism. Done is better than perfect. It doesn’t matter if you have messy handwriting, horrible spelling, or spill coffee on your pages. It doesn’t matter if you write a sentence or five pages. There is no right or wrong way to journal.

BUTTON MITTENS SUPPLIES 8x10 frame

Once the tree is down, and the decorations are put away, a home can feel blah. Prolong those festive feelings after the holidays by making a framed winter mitten out of buttons. This crafty celebration of all things winter will look great on your mantel or foyer table.

PROCEDURE

Mitten template

1 Print a mitten template in a size that looks appropriate for your frame and cut it out.

Felt sheet for the background

2 Take the frame apart and glue the felt to either the cardboard insert, if your

Buttons in shades of white Decorative snowflake buttons (optional) Craft glue White paint Paint brush

frame has one, or to the frame back if there is no insert. Position mitten template in the center of the frame and trace around it with a marker. 3 To apply the mitten cuff, glue one edge of the sweater cuff at the mitten top; fold over and glue into place. 4 Using the template as a guide, glue buttons into place to form the outline of the mitten. 5 Continue gluing buttons until the mitten is filled in. Add decorative snowflake buttons to the cuff, if desired. 6 To give a black frame a whitewashed appearance, put a small amount of white paint onto a paint brush and tap against a paper towel until almost all of the paint is off of the brush. Lightly brush the frame until the desired whitewashed appearance is achieved. 7 Place the button mitten in the frame and enjoy in a winter display.

OTHER IDEAS Make a button snowman with a hat, facial features and a snowy background created from felt. Create a snowflake out of buttons. Use a different color scheme of buttons, such as red or blue.

Cancer expertise in Lynchburg

There was no need to travel. The cancer experts were right here. Lee Perry thought about her grandchildren first. An aggressive breast cancer diagnosis came as a shock. With her husband, Mike, by her side, she met the challenge head on, knowing the chance to watch her grandchildren grow hung in the balance. She put her trust in Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center, relying on a team of oncology experts to carefully examine her case and develop a personal treatment plan. Lee received radiation and chemotherapy treatments a short drive from her home.

Pearson Regional Cancer Center was recently certified by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers for the third time. The certification recognizes the nation’s top cancer centers that meet the highest standards in breast health.

CREATIVE GIFT GIVING The season of gift giving is upon us! Maybe you’re dreading the flood of toys and knick-knacks about to enter your home, or perhaps you simply want to give a gift that shows thought and originality. Either way, we have a host of gift ideas that show you care without cluttering up the homes of your friends and family.

MEMBERSHIPS A membership to a local museum or other local entertainment site can make a great family gift. Consider places like Amazement Square, Science Museum of Western Virginia, Green Ridge Recreation Center or any of our other fantastic local nonprofits. Not only are you supporting a local treasure, but you’re sharing the gift of your enthusiasm with someone you love. EXPERIENCES If a membership isn’t feasible, a one-time visit may be perfect. Check out local colleges, high school, or theater groups for upcoming performances. Virginia is full of fine art opportunities for every age and taste, whether it’s a gallery opening or a special concert. Be sure to consider expiration dates when purchasing tickets. SUBSCRIPTIONS Magazines aren’t the only kind of subscriptions you can purchase. Craft kits, cleaning supplies, diapers, and Photo by Liz Cook Photography

all sorts of items can be purchased for regular delivery to a loved one’s home. Think about science or craft kits for kids, makeup samples for teenage girls, snack or bath products for busy friends, and stationery for distant family. And yes, magazine subscriptions are fun and can fit a variety of interests.

CLASSES Does your niece love to paint? Does your nephew want to learn to skateboard? Has your sister-in-law always talked about learning to knit? Many counties and cities offer a wide variety of classes through their recreation departments. Similarly, a number of local business offer classes on everything from cooking to using your camera. Maybe you are the expert and can offer to teach your friends. Think about gifting a few simple supplies and a card offering to host a gathering and teach your friends a new hobby.

Sports drinks contain minerals such as sodium and potassium that are depleted through vigorous exercise. “We lose electrolytes when we sweat,” says Dr. Maher. “The theory behind sports drinks is to replenish essential minerals faster than our body can restore them on its own.” Other sports drinks have recently come on the market that replenish electrolytes, but skip the added sugars

AMOUR BEBE OUR 2016 BUCKET LIST

This year, I’m starting a new tradition: Instead of making New Year’s resolutions, I’m making a bucket list for our family. If 2016 goes half as fast as 2015, we’ll blink and it’ll be over. I want to make sure we get the most –and have the most fun—out of this year. Feel free to use our ideas when you and your family make your own bucket list! 1) Grow our relationship with God. This will be a hard one to check off and will probably take us all year, but I can’t think of anything more important. We already go to church. We (almost always) pray before meals as a family. We pray before bed. But this year we want our family to grow our relationship with God and be more intentional about bringing Him into daily life. 2) Grow a garden. This will be the fifth year we’ve lived in our house, and I’ve been talking about planting a garden since year one. What a great way to teach our children about the vegetables they (actually enjoy!) eating than to have them help plant and watch the produce grow. Picking vine-ripened tomatoes, fresh cucumbers, green peppers and tender lettuce and incorporating our garden’s bounty in the family meal will be the best part. The savings on the grocery bill won’t hurt, either! 3) Give back. I remember one instance in the last year where our kids helped pick out gently used toys to give to others. Once they got on board, the kids actually enjoyed picking out items they’d loved and hoped would mean as much to other children. We need to make generosity a habit. But we’re not just going to give away stuff – we’re also going to be deliberate about giving back in other ways,

We should keep at the forefront of our minds that we want to do all we can to foster a season of amazement and awe in our children. The bonus of nurturing a sense of wonder in our children is that wonder is contagious. If we strive to see things through our children’s eyes, the joys of the season begin to come back to us, and they’re more precious because we know these years full of innocence will be over all too soon. Reflecting on what the holidays can mean to our children helps us begin to view our commitments and our people as blessings rather than burdens. This holiday season, let’s work to create and encourage wonderful memories that will be sure to last a lifetime. Start a family tradition. Be thankful. Make gifts by hand. Volunteer together. Don’t break the bank. Practice giving more than you receive. Count your blessings. Spend time with family. Limit your commitments. Don’t complain. These are simple ideas that will surely make the holidays meaningful and memorable.

6 EASY BUDGETING TIPS Here we go. Another year is creeping up on us. We’ve been so busy with our jobs, our personal lives, and yes, enjoying ourselves as well (you know “time flies when you’re having fun”), that we haven’t even noticed we’re sliding into a new year. With new years come new resolutions. We all get motivated about something we want to change or improve.
