Dear Friend, Maybe it stems from my school days, but I always adore the entrance of summer. From seemingly longer days to looser daily schedules and warmer temperatures, all are so welcomed in my book! This issue was meant to encourage you to get out and explore different things. Whether you decide to help your guy spruce up his wardrobe (in time for Father’s Day), head out to do something new (peek at our calendars) or decide to finally fire up the grill for the first time (yes, you!), we hope that you are inspired along your life’s journey through the pages that are ahead.

The Girl’s Guide
to Grilling Summer is a time to enjoy all that the outdoors has to offer, and that includes cooking! Often thought of as a man’s turf, we teamed up with Marisa Jones of Catalano’s to tempt your taste buds and alleviate misconceptions of utilizing the grill. We also consulted Chris Templeton of CLC Landscaping to find out how to get the most out of an outdoor living space. So, ladies, grab your spatulas, uncover that grill, and get ready to learn some new techniques with our fun recipes.

The Embellished Life
Inspiration in Textiles For me, sunny summer days invoke a spirit of opening the curtains, throwing up the sash (ok... maybe just the blinds and bump down the AC), and starting a fresh decorating project! Most of my decor projects start from one or two inspirations. More often than not, that inspiration is a fabric! You can go online and consult “Professor Google” and find THE colors of the season and follow the rules, OR you can follow my lead and read those articles, close the computer, and do what you want to do no matter what the rules say. You have undoubtedly noticed that personality in me. It’s not that I don’t want to follow the norm or

DI-Why Not? Lounge chair covers SUPPLIES NEEDED • 2 Bath Towels (30” x 54”) • 1 Hand Towel (16” x 26”) • Thread • Ruler • Sewing Machine
Pool and beach time are nearly here! Draping a towel over the chair is a common practice, but isn’t it annoying when the wind blows the towel off? Solve that problem by making a chair cover with a back pocket to hold the cover in place. An additional side pocket for sunscreen and a magazine or book is an added bonus. If you can sew a straight line, this simple project is for you.
PROCEDURE 1. Place a bath towel on a work surface wrong side up. Fold down the top edge 16.5”, and pin into place. 2. Sew the side edges. This forms the pocket that will go over the back of the lounge chair. 3. Match the ends of the two bath towels together overlapping the edges by .25”. Pin in place and sew. 4. Put the cover on the lounge chair and decide on the best location for the magazine pocket. This will vary according to the lounge chair design. Mark the pocket location with a few pins.
Pin, and sew the long edge. 6. Turn the hand towel over and pin 1.5” from the main towel edge. Stitch into place on the three sides that overlap. 7. Form the magazine pocket by folding the hand towel up so that the edges match on all sides. Pin into place and stitch the two sides. This forms a handy pocket for your sunscreen or book! 8. Put your new cover on your chair and relax!

Urbane Folklore When summer rolls around, there is nothing I look forward to more than heading to the beach. I am not a fan of the heat, and if I am going to be out during the day, I will be sitting in the sand under an umbrella with cool drink in hand and good music playing.
FASHION: Let’s talk about the dreaded swimsuit. I know that many of us are not completely happy with our bodies. Donning a bathing suit is not a favorite pastime, but it doesn’t have to be that horrible. Trends are actually encouraging us to cover up a bit more. Vintage styles are coming back, and the one piece is making a comeback. There are many wonderful retro style one piece suits and high–waisted two pieces with attractive cover ups and accessories that are chic and classy. So this summer let your retro sensibilities shine, and try the “less is more” approach to sexy. And let’s not forget to practice safe sun with our most trusted accessory: sunscreen. MUSIC: Instead of reviewing a few albums this issue, I’ve decided to make a summer playlist for you. This will be perfect to listen to while you are sunning on the beach…

The cold mornings are finally history, leaving you with no excuse to hit snooze and bury yourself under the covers. Our favorite weather has arrived, and it’s time to take your workout outdoors! Summer is the perfect season to switch things up and to add some new challenges to your stale running schedule. Mud and obstacle course races are quickly becoming a favorite. These races nearly force fun and spontaneity, as you cannot train for these runs like any other race. In these races, you not only plan for the uphill and downhill but also for extreme obstacles such as army crawls, roped walls, live electrical wires, and GIANT mud holes! You can’t just show up with endurance alone. The obstacles require significant upper body, core, and leg strength as the mud and water continues to weigh you down. These runs come in all shapes and sizes from 5Ks to half marathons,

Backyard Chronicles
When most people think about children’s literature, they conjure images of mischievous bunnies and talking spiders. Juvenile fiction is the life-blood of the children’s section, but the often overlooked and highly significant heartbeat is non-fiction. It is not just for children, either! I love picking up a book on history, science, or, even, art. The beauty of the book coming from this part of the library is you can read just enough to get a snap shot of a new topic or to brush up on an old one. In most cases, you can finish it in one sitting. Juvenile non-fiction is perfect for summer time. The kids are out of school. They have lots of free time but little to keep them sharp. Most children’s non-fiction is highly engaging so kids do not even realize they are (gasp) learning during the carefree summer months. Here are a few books to consider.

Summer is the season of warm temperatures and outdoor activities. As you hit the beaches, rivers or pools you need to protect your skin from summer’s harsh elements. By following these basic skincare tips, you can enjoy your activities while reducing the effects of sun exposure, which we all know includes those unwanted lines and age spots. Sunscreen Overexposure to the sun’s harmful rays can result in damage, wrinkles, premature aging and skin cancer. To reduce your exposure during outdoor activities, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you use a sunscreen that offers the following: •SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or greater •Broad Spectrum Protection (protects against harmful UVA and UVB rays) •Water Resistance Sunscreen should be applied liberally 15 minutes prior to going out in the sun and reapplied every 2 hours after swimming or after athletic activities. Remember to apply lip balm of SPF 30 or greater and also to use quality, reputable makeup lines that provide sun protection, such as Jane Iredale cosmetics. Keep in mind that exposure doesn’t just include time by the water. Jogging outside or hiking up the Peaks of Otter to enjoy the view also allow your skin to soak up the sun’s harmful rays.
Protective Clothing Wear protective clothing, including a long–sleeved shirt, pants, a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses. Also keep to the shade when possible. This is particularly important when you are on a boat or at the beach where the sun’s rays are reflected off the water and sand. Whether you are lounging
Flourish Summer skin care
by a local lake or headed south to Florida’s sunny beaches, sun protection is important no matter where you are.
Clean and Moisturize Pay particular care to your skin care regime during the summer months. To help your skin retain moisture, use lukewarm or cool water for your bath or shower, and keep your time limited. Use a moisturizing, fragrance–free soap that is gentle on your skin, and apply a moisturizer to your face and body as soon as you towel dry. An investment in caring for your skin today will reap the dividends of a healthy, younger looking you later in life. We hope you have a fun summer enjoying your time in the sun while being sensible in taking care of yourself.
