Summer Fruit Crisp This versatile dessert can be whipped up with apples, pears, peaches or blueberries and plums. The key is starting with the freshest produce available -- and topping the crisp when it’s still warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

• 1 Tbsp orange juice • 1/2 tsp orange zest (optional) • Ice cream or whipped cream (optional)

Ingredients: TOPPING: • 1/2 cup light brown sugar • 1 cup quick-cook oats • 1/4 cup flour • 5 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted • 1/2 tsp cinnamon • 1/4 tsp ginger • 1/8 tsp salt

Directions: 1. Heat the oven to 400 2. Combine all of the topping ingredients in a medium-size bowl. Rub the mixture together with a fork, pastry blender, or your fingers until it forms clumps. 3. In an 8-inch square baking pan, gently toss the filling ingredients. Sprinkle the topping over the fruit. 4. Bake the dish until the fruit is bubbly and the topping is crisp, about 40 minutes. 5. Let the dish cool for 15 minutes before serving with ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.

FILLING: • 5 cups chopped fresh fruit • 3 Tbsp brown sugar • 1 Tbsp flour

THE POWER OF THE RIGHT REBUKE Many years ago, an American Rabbi was visiting Miami and he gave a lecture of the life of the Chofetz Chaim. After expounding on the great Tzaddik’s accomplishments, he proceeded to relate another story. The Rabbi hesitated before beginning the story as he only knew a part of it but rationalized that even an unfinished story about the Chofetz Chaim would have an impact on the crowd. The story was of a teenage boy who was studying in the Chofetz Chaim’s Yeshivah and who was found smoking on Shabbos. The faculty was in an uproar and some of them felt the boy should be expelled. The Chofetz Chaim, however, requested that the boy be brought to his house. At this point in the narrative, the Rabbi said, “I am not sure what the Chofetz Chaim told the boy. However, they were only together for a little while. I would give anything to be informed what he said to the boy because I was told that the boy never desecrated Shabbos again after that.” The Rebbe then continued his lecture. After the conclusion, the hall emptied out except for one elderly man who remained in his seat. The Rabbi walked over to him and asked, “Is anything the matter?” The man asked him, “Where did you hear the story about the cigarette?” The man looked shaken. “I really don’t know,” The Rabbi said. The man looked up and said, “I was that boy.” He then proceeded to relate the following: “The story happened in the 1920’s when the Chofetz Chaim was in his eighties. I was extremely frightened to have to go to his house and face him.

I entered and looked around in disbelief at the poverty that was rampant. Suddenly the Chofetz Chaim entered the room. He took my hands and grasped them tenderly and brought it up to his face and when I looked into his radiant face, his eyes were closed. When he opened them, they were full of tears and he said in a quiet voice full of pain, “Shabbos” and he started to cry bitterly. Tears streamed down his face and one of them rolled onto my hand. When I think of that tear today, I can still feel its heat. It was not a pleasant feeling at all to cause this great Tzaddik to weep. But in his rebuke -- which consisted of only one word -- I felt that he was not angry, but rather sad. He seemed frightened at the consequences of my actions.” The elderly man then caressed the hand that bore the invisible scar of a precious tear. Most comets that pass by Earth’s vicinity can only be glimpsed through intricate and expensive telescopes, so it is a rare treat to be able to see one with the naked eye. Comets that can be seen with amateur telescopes and binoculars are considered rare, but this comet, named C/2012 S1, will be visible even during the daytime with the naked eye! It was first discovered in 2012, far too dim to be glimpsed with any routine technology. However, as it comes closer, it will gradually be able to be seen with amateur telescopes around September of 2013, and by November it will be visible during the day to almost anyone who wishes to look into the sky! The reason it fluctuates in visibility is because of how near it is to the Sun and closer stars. As it’s arc nears the Sun, we are able to see it better, and when it moves farther from the solar system, it gradually decreases in visibility.
