This year has not been without its challenges. As we enter a period of uncertainty stemming from a new COVID variant, 2021 looks to be closing out much the same way as it began. Fortunately, Ontarians, by and large, have embraced the government’s vaccination efforts, as we continue to do our part for the health and welfare of our community. Looking back at 2021 in real estate, it was a banner year for the industry. Though final sales figures have not been released, by the end of November, the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board (TRREB) had already shown more than 115,000 sales on the MLS. This set a new sales record for a calendar year, surpassing the previous high that was established in 2016, and marking just the third time that sales have exceeded 100,000. And, it’s not just resale that has surged. Greater Toronto’s new homes and condos

industry has been booming. I cannot recall a period with so many successful new condo launches. In many cases, the interest from potential condo buyers is so high that you need a Realtor with VIP access, or there is simply no way to participate. So, we’ve been extremely busy on this front, ensuring that our clients are in line and being properly catered to. The big story heading into 2022 continues to be a lack of supply. At the end of November, there was just under three weeks of housing supply in the GTA. There are simply not enough new listings coming on market to satisfy demand, and this is driving prices up and accelerating the time it takes to sell. With some travel restrictions in place, and an increased emphasis being placed on health and wellness, the demand for cottages, cabins, farmhouses and recreation property has skyrocketed. Certainly, regular access to a country home can play a significant role in maintaining our physical and emotional health. In a rural setting, we can escape the often-hectic pace of urban life to relax and connect with nature, family, hobbies, or even a good book. Though the natural environment is central to any northern experience, equal attention should be paid to the dwelling and how it interacts with the landscape. If you are planning to build or renovate a dream getaway, there are some key principles to consider so that your property realizes its full potential. These include: capturing dramatic views of the landscape to fully experience both the settings and the seasons; maximizing natural light and ventilation through the use of large, operable windows and skylights; integrating interior and exterior spaces; specifying a material palette that reflects the natural qualities of the site; and implementing a sustainability strategy to ensure the building treads lightly on the earth. ARCHITECTURE Woodhous e

Location: Sin ghampton, Ontario Size: 1,150 sf existing cottage + 1,660 sf renovation

This striking rural country house was designed for a couple and their two children near Creemore, Ontario in the Municipality of Grey Highlands. Comprised of an existing 19th-century log cabin and a modern addition, the house is sited within a large clearing on a heavily wooded 90-acre site. Retention of the historic, rustic qualities of the existing building was paramount; it remains distinct and separate, yet connected to the new addition by a glazed link. The two building forms are unified into a cohesive whole through the material expression of exterior cladding materials: riffing on the rough-hewn logs of the old cabin, charred wood siding is a modern interpretation that ensures visual and textural continuity. Similarly, a low gable roof was chosen for the new addition to reference the existing cabin as an integral compositional element of the scheme. Tiltand-turn windows with a black aluminum exterior finish create a seamlessly defined exterior envelope.

An exterior breezeway divides the kitchen and dining area from the privacy of the sleeping quarters – a key aspect of the design that allows the clients to fully experience the seasons and the natural elements all year long. Sixteen-foot-long wood panels are hung from the soffit and can slide across the length of the façade to fully enclose the breezeway, thus offering protection from even the harshest winter winds. When these sliding doors are closed, a vaulted ceiling featuring a bank of four north-facing skylights opens up the space, refocusing attention from the horizontal plane of landscape beyond to the sky above. A suspended fireplace is a focal point of the space…a literal hearth around which the family can gather. The house reflects the affable and lively spirit of the clients, embodied in the warm, textured material palette and diversity of spatial conditions. Most importantly, to facilitate their insistence on an ever-present connection to the landscape, the architectural strategy prioritizes the seamless flow of interior and exterior spaces with as few visual, physical and mechanical barriers to the experience of the home and property.

Located on the Niagara Escarpment, this weekend home for a family of six transcends ordinary domestic programming to create a place of spiritual resonance. Through its siting, tectonics and materiality, it balances intimacy and expansiveness, light and dark, land and sky — orienting and heightening one’s experience of the surrounding environment.

Inspired by the historical precedent of the longhouse, all rooms and spaces enjoy pronounced natural light and ventilation. A generously scaled, yet intimate family space, including kitchen, dining and living areas, forms the central hub, with bedrooms comfortably

With forests to the west, a hill to the south, and 100 acres of fields to the north and east, Compass House is surrounded by a thicket of trees to provide windbreak and a sense of enclosure. Its white exterior registers the seasons, distinct amidst the green fields of summer, and melding into a winter landscape of waning light and snow. Constructed with fieldstone found on the property, low retaining walls create a plinth for the house and ground it in the land. Two perpendicular wings enclose an intimately scaled outdoor courtyard. In response to the building’s low-lying horizontality, the totemic form of the outdoor fireplace adds a critical vertical counterpoint. In addition, so do the 10 | the COLLECTION

separated on either end. Floors and walls made from white oak and knotty white cedar are textured and warm. In contrast, the ceiling above the main space is white, expansive and seemingly boundless. The distinct difference in materiality echoes the meeting of land and sky outside. On the exterior, the firm’s commitment to architecture that endures is manifest in the use of low-maintenance

construction materials such as cement-board siding, aluminum windows and a steel roof. Phase One of the project is LEED Gold-certified, and this commitment to sustainability carries into Phase Two with a design that prioritizes natural daylighting, passive ventilation, high insulation values and construction waste reduction. The provision of an in-ground geothermal system furthers the goal of what is already exceptional energy performance. The home sits at the base of a steep hill that cascades down toward Little Redstone Lake, secreted away from view, while featuring generous vantage points out onto the water. Clad in lightly burned and brushed cypress, the charred hue camouflages the cottage and establishes it as part of the forested landscape. This allows the site’s natural features and native trees to remain foregrounded and primary.

While the exterior blends with the terrain, the interiors consist of white-washed birch plywood, providing a serene counterpoint that evokes a deep sense of tranquility. The house is awash in natural light, bringing the interior experience into harmony with the rhythms and moods of the outdoors. Glazing along the main floor offers full vistas of the lake and beyond, interrupted only by a concrete and blackened steel fireplace. The hearth proposes a demarcation between living and dining areas in the otherwise open space, and is adjacent to a full kitchen outfitted with ample storage. This four-season cottage boasts enough space to sleep 10 comfortably — a priority for the clients who share this space with family members and friends And, it was designed to meet high energy-efficiency standards, ensuring comfort throughout the year. In-floor radiant heat provides a cozy warmth during the colder months, while ductwork circulates hot air from the wood-burning fireplace more widely 12 | the COLLECTION

throughout the house. The strategic placement of operable windows along the double-height staircase is intended to encourage passive ventilation, as temperatures rise in the spring and summer. At the edge of the lake, just beyond the trees that sit between the cottage and the water, a small pavilion sits perched above the stones along the shore. Two walls of glass open at a columnless corner to expand the space, providing the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine while taking in a summer sunset.

The Aga Khan Museum presents HIDDEN STORIES By Louise Nunn

Long before the flights, immigration and online networks that now easily connect the east with the west, the link between countries was a network of dusty roads and worn sea routes. Think of it…the only source of knowledge for the world outside one’s hometown would have been through the books and traders travelling the Silk Roads. The Aga Khan Museum’s new exhibition, Hidden Stories: Books Along the Silk Roads, blends beautiful, old books with cutting-edge technologies to examine this all-important transmission of ideas – without which the world would not look the same today. “In general, the Silk Roads fascinate us all, I think – regardless of our cultural and religious background,” says Dr. Filiz Çakır Phillip, cocurator of the exhibition. “It’s where diverse cultures meet each other and create synergy and a platform for exchange. The time we currently live in [with the pandemic], is difficult for all of us, because we want to be connected to each other, to travel and discover unknown worlds. I think this exhibition can offer us [this].”

Hidden Stories is a collaboration between the Aga Khan Museum and the Book and the Silk Roads Project at the University of Toronto. Overall, the exhibition displays 110 objects: over 40 come from the Museum’s own collection, and the rest come from partnerships with the Royal Ontario Museum, the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, Western University and the Marshall and Marilyn R. Wolf Collection.

The exhibition is set up as both a road to travel along, and a book to open and examine from beginning to end. Visitors start with an introduction to the Silk Roads, then move through five carefully curated rooms: The Making of the Book, Gathering Around the Book, The Book and the Body, Micro-CT, and Intercultural

Micro-CT, just like a CT scan, takes a 3D, non-invasive picture of the insides of a book to allow researchers to look within long-closed books. “Some of the manuscripts are so fragile, you can’t even open them up,” Dr. Çakır Phillip explains, excited at micro-CT’s potential for research, but also for preservation. “I always believe as curator, I am responsible for the collection now, but I have borrowed it from the next generation.” Micro-CT can also be found on the exhibition’s digital companion site that will remain updated with new research long after the in-person exhibition has finished. One of the largest artifacts in Hidden Stories might not seem to belong in the exhibition at first. It is a 3-foot by 8-foot beautiful green cloth, illuminated with a thick border of red, green, and blue starshaped etchings accented by gold leaf. In the middle of the cloth, spread out equidistant from one another, are five similarly coloured, geometric flowers. A beautiful cloth, certainly, yet hidden in the tiniest of script, covering every inch of the green fibres lies another treasure: the flowing story of the complete Qur’an.

As visitors lean in, the fine ridges on the cloth turn out to be a miniscule calligraphy script known as ghubar in Arabic (meaning “dust”). This is just one of the many hidden stories on display at the museum. Like this cloth, each artifact holds a unique set of clues to the culture and the people it has come from. For example, the Qur’an On Cloth was created by a calligrapher in India. Dr. Çakır Phillip explains that the calligrapher inscribed on the cloth his start date and end date (this was three years in the making). These personal touches create a unique key that connects the viewer to the date, time, and person behind it. “The more you learn about a book, the more you learn about the person or persons behind the book,” Dr. Çakır Phillip explains. In using books as the centre of their exhibition, Dr. Çakır Phillip points out that an essential part of the roads were the ideas, faiths, and cultures found along the Silk Roads. But what “counts” as a book? The Qur’an on cloth may not have come to mind at first, but Dr. Çakır Phillip and her colleagues at the Book and Silk Roads Project dare visitors to look beyond the usual rectangular, bound books we might be used to. “Can we call a book, a book, if it is in a scroll shape, or if it is written on cloth? There are many hidden stories and that is key.” Visitors will see stories written on colourful scrolls, single leaves of paper or parchment, concertina (think accordion folding), pothi (long stacked sheets connected by a string), and the more familiar, codex. Including all these forms of bookmaking in this exhibition was very important because many of

these other forms were more common in certain countries along the Silk Roads than codex…to remove the form would have been to remove the rich cultural contributions of that region. One of the first display cases in Hidden Stories contains the oldest pages in the exhibition – two artifacts from the 10th century that are from opposite ends of the Silk Roads. There is a Chinese prayer sheet, stamped using a woodblock print on paper, and two leaves of the Mishnah, or Oral Torah, from Egypt, written in ink on parchment. These two artifacts are opposites in many ways: they represent two places, two religions, two types of paper and two stages of printing. Yet, they both represent the co-existence of Jewish practices and ideas with Buddhist norms and thoughts – not to mention Muslim, Hindu, and other groups. Dr. Çakır Phillip explains: “Our approach [for this exhibition] was to display the richness of the Silk

Roads and explore how these cultures were engaged with each other, how they learn from each other, and how the same tradition could exist in different cultures and to help [visitors] see this artistic culmination in books.” Hidden Stories paints a beautiful and lasting picture of the east and west converging. Here, cultural artifacts from across the world exist side by side under the same roof, to tell their stories – each from their own unique perspective. “By studying them we can learn so much about our past. And they help us to understand our present and prepare us for our future.”

For the better part of two decade,s he has since applied his considerable talents as a writer, anchor, and roving reporter to bring Canadian politicians and A-list celebrities into living rooms across the country. His new memoir, An Embarrassment of Critch’s, is already a national bestseller, taking the reader behind the scenes of some of the most memorable moments of his career. This winter, he will be launching a new television show, Son of a Critch, based on his f irst memoir about growing up in Newfoundland. We c a u g h t u p w i t h t h e f a m e d c o m i c to t a l k a b o u t his start in showbiz, the new show, and what we can expect f rom a new year in politics. WINTER 2022 | 25

The Collection: When did you first get the acting bug? Mark Critch: In sixth grade, a nun at school came and said “you're going to be in the play.” I said, “please, don't do this to me.” It was a tougher school and you did not want to be in the play…there was no arguing with the nun. It was a Christmas play, told through the point of view of the innkeeper who turned Joseph and Mary away. And it turned out my father, during the war, had played the same role in this obscure little play at an American base. From there, I wanted to do sketch comedy, when I was about 15, and met up with other like-minded fellows. We rented a theatre in St. John's, the former Longshoremen's Protective Union, and they gave us a 60/40 split of the door and said go on at 11pm. So we played to a small collection of our friends who were allowed out late and some tipsy sailors. I was hooked. TC: Your career coincided with, and was bolstered by, the collapse of Newfoundland’s fishing industry.

MC: All of a sudden, in 1992, the government said that's it. After 500 years, there will be no more cod fishing in Newfoundland. There's a moratorium, the stock is too weak. Tens of thousands of people were put out of work overnight. A lot of government programs popped up, one was called TAGS, The Atlantic Groundfish Strategy. It was to retrain people who worked in the fishery. They decided to retrain a bunch of people in the town of Trinity, probably a population of 60 year-round, to become actors. There was a historical pageant, a walking tour of the town. People would dress up like old time fisherman…basically, ghosts of themselves. And that was their way forward. I was brought out from Saint John’s to fill in some of the gaps and to help teach acting. So that was my big start, doing all kinds of plays. We did Saltwater Moon, and we also did Shakespeare. A lot of the guys said, ‘Ye crowds are crazy, we can't be doing Shakespeare, ye crowds are nuts. So, I said, hang on a second. I circled all the Ye’s in the script and said, see, you’re already speaking Shakespearean. We went on to have great success and that theatre company is still

there today. Thousands of people come every year to see them in that town. It’s quite remarkable. TC: You’re best known for This Hour Has 22 Minutes. The original cast were all Newfoundlanders. Is there something about the province that lends itself to political comedy? MC: In Newfoundland, all the politicians are big characters, almost like wrestlers. You have to be like a John Crosby or Danny Williams, to bring something else to the table, to keep up with the natural witticism of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. My dad was a reporter, so we would always talk politics. I knew cabinet ministers, as well as I knew the cast of Happy Days. So, in sketch comedy as a teenager, then later touring the island doing a political review, satire was always one of the things I did. TC: It’s the longest running comedy show in Canadian history. What’s been the secret to its success? MC: It's reactionary. Every week something happens in the news and we get to make fun of it. Each week is different. We might get a new cast on our show, but we also get a new cast of characters. I remember when Stephen Harper was in and he was a great foil, and Jean Chretien was grabbing people by the throat, and how do you top this? But then in comes Justin Trudeau, and in comes Donald Trump. TC: Do you have any favourite moments? MC: Oh, so many…that show’s taken me to China, Russia, Jordan. I've got to be in the basement of the White House and hang off the top of the Peace Tower. But a lot of my favourite moments are the moments behind the scenes. You get to see a different side of politicians, and sometimes they get to be on the sidelines of quite historic moments…and you were there to pop out and make fun of it. TC: You've got a new show coming this winter based on your book, Son of a Critch. What can audiences expect?

MC: Well, it’s the story of my life, growing up in Saint John’s. It's set in 1986, the first season is me going into junior high to a new school. I lived on the outskirts of Saint John’s, so my life wasn't the whales and the icebergs, nor was it a city life with other kids. I was kind of on my own. There were no kids where I lived, and I was raised by a lot of older folk. So, it's the story of a kid, older than his years, trying to navigate the life of his peers and trying to fit in. Malcolm McDowell, the brilliant English actor, who people would know from A Clockwork Orange, Entourage, and a million other things, he plays my grandfather. And in the show, young Mark shares a bedroom with him, and he is his confidant. And the kid playing me is this brilliant actor from Yorkshire, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. He just turned 13, and he's playing Pinocchio opposite Tom Hanks in a new Disney adaptation. He's one of the best actors, if not the best actor, I've ever worked with, and he’s only 13. He's really special. So, we have an incredible cast, the writing is good, there's great music by Keith Power and the great Alan Doyle. I can't wait for Canadians to come over to my house and meet the family. WINTER 2022 | 27

TC: This year, Canada lost a great comedian in Norm MacDonald. You posted a photo of him that I'm sure no one from the public had seen. How did your paths cross? MC: That's not my photo, it's a picture that had been shared by a friend of mine, but I knew Norm from Twitter. We had lots of mutual friends, but I hadn't met him. But then he was a great Twitterer and very lovely in direct messages. We’d chat every now and then, and he would be incredibly supportive and hyper-aware of what was going on in Canada. I think that he had a real love of that fellowship of stand-up comedians. He was very supportive of young comics on the road, very loyal, and I think he had a real nostalgia for those days in Ottawa doing stand-up. So, he was one of the greatest comedians ever, but the great thing about him was he was Canadian to the core and always had an eye on what was going on up here, to kind of see if he could help in any way or just be supportive. I know a lot of young comedians he reached out to…it can be a tough business, it can be depressing at times, and when someone like him reaches out and goes ‘hey, I think you're funny, I think you're doing great, don't change, keep going on the road, you're going to get there,’ that'll get

someone through a year. And I think he got a lot of comedians through a lot of years, just with kindness. TC: What are your predictions for Canadian politics in the year 2022? MC: Mr. O'Toole has sharks circling around him in his party, there’s already been a couple of challenges to his leadership. I see some splintering in the Conservative Party coming, and I don't think he can hold it together. There's more of a far right and more to the middle sides of the party, so there's going to be some warring there and that'll be interesting. I think Mr. Singh is very happy to be propping Mr. Trudeau's government up for a while because after COVID and these elections, all of these parties are broke. So, somehow, yet again, Justin Trudeau has been able to, like a bull in the china shop, come out the other door without any scratches. But in the next election, I think perhaps Mr. Trudeau may have finally worn himself out and I think we might see all new faces, except for Mr. Singh in the next election. Which will be good for 22 Minutes, because heading into our third decade, once again, we’ll get a refresh of all new characters to kind of make fun of and play with.

Trish Magwood, chef and food author, understands the importance of the family table. It’s where we gather, eat, connect and unwind from the chaos of the day. The table takes on an even more central role during the holiday season. To keep the cooking part simple, so we can spend more time with friends and family, Trish has authored a new book, My New Table. This collection of more than 100 recipes is a celebration of the modern table, however you choose to define it. Ms. Magwood joined The Collection to share some holiday meal tips and share one of her favourite seasonal recipes.

THE COLLECTION: Your recipes are all simple and straightforward, and the method is never more than a page long. Is that a goal of yours? TRISH MAGWOOD: 100 percent. I want to maintain the love for cooking and food. Sometimes, when it's too long and cumbersome, you lose the love. So, the idea of the book is relatively quick cooking, with ingredients we have on hand, and loosely following local and seasonal. TC: Do you have a favourite winter meal? TM: I’ve got my eyes on the Curry Chicken Thighs and Pomegranates. It's festive just by virtue of it having pomegranates, and it stays true to my ‘keep it simple’ mandate…and the kids love it, it has that unique crunch. I think it's a nice simple, pre-holiday meal. TC: What’s the key to making a successful holiday meal? TM: Being organized, planning ahead. The most arduous tasks are often not the cooking or the preparing, but the conceiving and shopping. Once your food’s at home, the rest is kind of easy. It's just about figuring out what you're going to do so you're not scrambling last minute. TC: What will be on your holiday table this year? TM: I picked up some pretty, simple tabletop stuff from Hopson Grace in Toronto. I start with setting a table that can last for days and weeks, and not be super holiday specific. I love lots of sides so that there are many options. We all do potluck in my family. My mom does the main, so I'm usually relegated to the sides. So, I’ll mix it up with brussels sprouts, potato tomato gratin, some roasted carrots. I like having more sides than less. TC: What’s an ingredient we all need to get familiar with? TM: Turmeric. We always talk about using what’s in your cupboard, but turmeric is showing up more often, with soups in particular. I have a butternut squash soup, and turmeric adds depth and complexity of flavour and colour. Also, there's some helpful health bonuses to it, so you might not have it on hand, but turmeric is a nice ingredient to add. TC: Do you have a favourite food store in Toronto? TM: I have lots but I am guilty of the decadent indulgence of Summerhill Market and Harvest Wagon…they have the most beautiful produce, 365 days a year. TC: Do you have any New Year's resolutions?

TM: Oh gosh, that's planning ahead…deeper efforts to make meaningful connections with dear friends. How about that?

CHRISTMAS EUCHRE TOURNEY SALAD Our friends in Creemore host a big annual euchre tournament. The first year I was invited, I was new to euchre—which wasn’t ideal for this party. So I won them over by offering to bring a salad, which became a ritual. Years later, I tied for second place and won part of the pot of money. Even so, I’m still terrible at euchre but it’s one of the best nights—all about friends, good food, and games. | Serves 6

INGREDIENTS

3 cups peeled, de-seeded + cubed butternut squash ¼ cup + 1 tbsp olive oil Salt + freshly cracked pepper 1 red bell pepper 4 cups chopped kale + mixed greens ¼ cup aged balsamic vinegar 1 1/2 cups pickled onions ¼ cup pepitas, toasted 1/2 cup soft goat cheese

METHOD Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Spread the squash out on the prepared sheet. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 30 minutes or until the squash is soft and brown. Set aside to cool. If you have a gas burner, place the whole pepper directly into the high flame using metal tongs, turning to char it completely on all sides, about 6 minutes total. If you don’t have a gas range, halve the pepper, discard the stem and seeds, and broil on a sheet pan until charred, about 5 minutes.

Seal the pepper in a paper bag, and set aside to steam and cool. When cool enough to handle, remove from the bag and peel off the blackened skin (it should slide off easily). Don’t rinse. If you roasted the pepper on an open flame, discard the core and seeds. Slice the pepper into thin strips. To assemble the salad, combine the kale, remaining olive oil, and the balsamic. Season with salt and pepper, and toss to coat. Layer the squash, bell peppers, pickled onions, pepitas, and goat cheese on top. COOK’S NOTES To save time, use frozen, chopped squash and bake from frozen. Consider roasting a few extra red bell peppers and storing them in an airtight container to use in salads another day. They’ll keep refrigerated for up to 4 days.
