PRESIDENT'S LETTER Welcome to the fall edition of The Collection. While the warm weather has its obvious appeal, in and around the city this autumn, there is so much to do. The cooler temperatures and stunning colours invite exploration; our cultural institutions introduce some of their best programs; the NBA Champion Raptors return to action; and we ramp up for the always exciting fall real estate market. It’s been a busy summer at Harvey Kalles. We’ve launched our new website at HarveyKalles.com with several innovative features. We encourage you to check it out and start your online real estate search with us. Our client, The Acorn Development Corporation, began construction at Limerick Point in Richmond Hill with models soon to open. Be sure to check it out; it’s easily one of the most picturesque infill developments you’ll ever see. And we had a terrific bus excursion to Lake Simcoe, where many of our agents toured some stunning cottage properties, only an hour from the city. Brokerage news aside, we’re expecting a very active market over the coming months. Despite a slow start to 2019, the market has been on fire since April. Earlier this month, the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) released its sales statistics for August, and we’ve now had five consecutive months of year-over-year sales increases above 10%. With more than 60,000 sales reported in 2019, the market is 12%

ahead of where it was this time last year. With limited supply and the fall market just getting started, expect to see upward pressure on prices as ‘seller’s market’ conditions continue. lthough biophilia is a relatively recent term, what it describes transgresses time, geography and cultures. In short, we all have an innate, if not primordial, tendency to find connections with nature and other living things. It explains why we love going to parks, hikes in the woods or spending time at the cottage. As humans, connecting to nature or other living things delivers a sense of wellness critical to our being. From that small plant on your desk to a lake at the cottage, we seek it out wherever we are. So what does this have to do with architecture? Sustainable design is much more than minimizing our impact on the environment‌ it is also about connecting with it. There is a correlation between a person’s connectivity with nature and their quality of life. Research shows that regular exposure to green space and natural elements 8 | the COLLECTION
is associated with a multitude of health benefits, from a reduction in blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, to improved quality of sleep and numerous other restorative neurological outcomes. With this in mind, biophilic design seeks to integrate principles aimed at supporting the physiological well-being of a building’s occupants. The basis of biophilic design in architecture and interiors incorporates natural materials, natural light, fresh air, vegetation, views of nature and a sensory experience of the natural world into the modern built environment. Our firm, Dubbeldam Architecture + Design, has been employing such practices over the past 17 years by exploring ways of connecting a built environment to its natural surroundings and integrating subtle natural elements into our projects. The means by which this is achieved in our work varies from spatial strategies to visual cues to forms and materials used in the design. all photos courtesy of dubbeldam architecture + design
Garden Circle House
One of our residential projects, Garden Circle House, is an elegant example of biophilic design on many levels. In response to the client’s wish for a home that would “bring nature in,” moments of connectivity to the outdoors or to natural elements are incorporated in every part of the home. Upon entry, a direct view to the backyard is provided through a tall, narrow window on axis, while the whole of the kitchen and living area opens out onto the landscaped backyard through floor-to-ceiling sliding doors. A strategically located window in the dining room frames an original pear tree, its foliage casting animated plays of light and shadow, while the scent of the pear blossoms in spring and the ripe fruit in autumn filter through the window. Multiple green roofs can be seen from all bedrooms, providing sensory delight with lush grasses, sweet plant smells and the soothing sounds of buzzing bees collecting pollen. The character and texture of natural materials is emphasized throughout,
including warm wood flooring, finely-crafted wood cabinetry, natural stone countertops, fireplace and tiles, and clay brick. On the exterior, the use of locally-sourced brick in buff and warm grey shades, natural stone, mahogany windows and cedar cladding reflect the natural surroundings. A focal point of the home’s interior is a curved central wood staircase with open risers and a solid mahogany balustrade that emulates natural organic forms and invites the hand to run along its sculptural contours. Light pours down from a large overhead operable skylight, washing over the natural white walls and providing illumination deep into the core of the home. In conjunction with the open riser stairs, the operable skylight functions as a highly effective means for passive ventilation, drawing the cooler air up and venting the warmer air out. a physical and visual connection to the home’s surroundings. These openings flood the interior with natural light and allow the inhabitants to experience the changing seasons. The home’s interior spaces extend to a series of highly useable outdoor spaces that enrich the domestic experience, each with its own unique character and level of privacy. The ground floor steps out to a generous thermally-treated ash wood deck at the same level as the interior floor, creating a feeling of an extension of the living space. The deck descends to a patio defined by granite pavers and a row of honey locust trees that offer dappled light and shade in summer. At the front of the house, an existing porch has been remade into a private outdoor dining room, enclosed by a five-foot-high wood screen which extends the private realm of the indoor dining space into the public arena. On the third floor, two unique outdoor spaces provide green respite. An exposed roof deck at the back of the house offers plentiful views over the neighbourhood and into the extensive tree canopy surrounding the house. At the front of the house, half of the master bedroom is given over to an intimate exterior space clad in warm ash planks with a recessed planter and an opening carved into the roof for natural light, access to rainwater and ample views of green. Intimately connected to the master suite, this ‘skygarden’ functions as a unique outdoor room, open to the sky, sun, wind and stars.
which include natural imagery and symbols including billowing clouds, mountain peaks and the trunks of birch trees. In addition, the pool and water features work together to create a relaxing effect, both audibly and visually, while helping to support natural cooling from breezes when the backyard doors are open. One of biophilic design’s distinguishing features is how easily it can be applied to projects of all scales and typologies; where Garden Circle House was a new build with a generous footprint, our Skygarden House project was a renovation with a compact square footage on a narrow urban lot. Here, our client desired a city home that provided the same serene and bucolic feeling they get from their home in the countryside…in short, they were seeking that connection with nature. To achieve this effect, the front and rear facades were opened up with large windows, creating 10 | the COLLECTION

Picture a 1990s-inspired bedroom with a library of teen lit, a functioning Nintendo 64, and surfaces covered in bright Muppet-like fur. Or a space where gazing at two crystallized sculptures of a child and adult can inspire one to write a letter to their younger selves. Or a maze where one scoops and carries sand to an unseen place, blindfolded, with just the assistance of an audio guide. While these places may seem peculiar, they are among the installations that have charmed, dazzled and provoked contemplation for more than 100,000 curious museumgoers since 2015. This fall, Toronto will become the first city outside of only a few major American markets to experience the immersive 29Rooms. Initially, the rooms – of which there are, yes, 29 – were set up in a Brooklyn warehouse in 2015. They were organized as a celebration to mark the tenth anniversary of Refinery29, a prominent online magazine and media company that explores issues affecting young women. Brought to life during New York Fashion Week, the pop-up art exhibits created a stir, while bringing ideas examined in a virtual realm into a more physical environment. With free admission, crowds eagerly emerged to snap photographs and become absorbed in an array of installations.
bold, “destination art” experiences, including Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrors, were just starting to reach blockbuster status. The hype around these immersions did not just target an elite niche of art lovers, but began to attract more casual visitors, or those who, as Fagon says, “felt isolated from this cultural sphere.” This increased popularity was probably helped by free admission in the first two years of its New York run. “We wanted to create an experience that was open to the public and very accessible to our audience,” she says, noting that Fashion Week events are often exclusive and expensive. The partners collaborating with Refinery29 for Toronto’s exhibitions include seven Canadian companies and several local artists. These visionaries include Hannah Epstein, who goes by “hanski.” The textilebased artist, who uses her work to explore both her Latvian and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, is creating one installation.
“We took time to make sure that there were collaborations with local artists,” says Olivia-Jene Fagon, associate creative director for Refinery29. “We’re trying to create [camaraderie] with those creative communities when we go into each city.” The expansion north of the border was a natural choice due to the launch of the company’s Canadian portal in October 2018. When 29Rooms debuted four years ago, arts and culture lovers’ relationship to museums and pop-up exhibitions was not the same. Big, FALL 2019 | 15
Meanwhile, one room will be devoted to a billboard-inspired work by Maria Qamar, also known as Hatecopy. Born in Pakistan and residing in Mississauga, Qamar is an artist and humourist. Like Epstein, her pop art focuses on hybridization, as it examines the intersection between South Asian and Canadian identities.
29Rooms’ rise to fame is tied to the launch of similar pop-up museums which retain mileage from the numerous opportunities available for selfies and photos. Fagon says that there is an emphasis on creating experiences that can be both interactive and easily spread on social media, however, there has also been resistance to the photo-friendly experience.
Around 10 of the rooms will be transplants – audience favourites, according to Fagon – from exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles. In one corner, multimedia artist Uzumaki Cepeda’s Teenage Bedroom should be a hit among those who came of age during the 1990s. The room contains posters, books, and a period-perfect telephone. (Be sure to pick up the receiver to hear some of the pre-recorded conversations.) “She was interested in inviting guests to tap into the nostalgia of that time,” Fagon says of Cepeda’s room. “It’ll be a little bit of a time warp.”
“In the inception of the event, we never thought about it as an Instagramable space,” Fagon says. “Even if the idea of taking a photo in a space feels inherently superficial, people are actually using those images in service of a more meaningful message.”
Other rooms benefit from the social interactions between guests. Conversations with your Inner Child, from performance artist and choreographer Carlota Guerera, allows guests to reflect on their adolescence, as they see the face of their inner child in the artwork. The rooms are not just vessels to explore other visionaries’ repertoires, but for visitors to explore their own creative juices. Beyond the installations, some of the rooms contain writing and drawing workshops through activities led by event staff. “The main piece of feedback [Refinery29 received] when we were developing last year’s tour…was for more opportunities to do things that were hands-on interactive,” Fagon says. Nevertheless, with approximately 800 guests able to move through the exhibition at once, these opportunities are not always private. Visitors must make the most of their two-and-a-half hour timeslot. With that compressed time to visit the activations, Refinery29 has described the exhibition as “speed dating for ideas and art.”

The socially and politically minded rooms that have invited snaps and shares in previous installments include ones designed by notable names, such as musician Janelle Monae and producer/screenwriter Lena Waithe. Transparent creator Jill Soloway helped to design a gender-neutral bathroom where visitors can listen to testimonials from people talking about their gender identity. Past sponsors with potent political messages included Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union. Another installation entitled The Values Stand, advocated for voter registration in the United States in 2018, and will receive a Canadian twist this fall, as we approach the Canadian federal election in October. The space replicates a newsstand that utilizes graphics and messages to bring awareness to current sociopolitical issues. While the appeal of online photo sharing is key to 29Rooms’ viral success, the plan is to have the themes of certain spaces resonate beyond their interactivity. Fagon explains, “The idea is to see this art for its social or political purpose, and not as a mere, empty spectacle.” Expand Your Reality runs September 26 - October 6, 2019. 5 PROJECTS HELPING CANADIAN CITIES FLOURISH BY GEOFF CAPE, EVERGREEN Canada is a great city builder. Our cities are home to people from around the world, viewed by residents and newcomers as a place of tradition, refuge, opportunity and connection to nature. But with increasing polarization in cities, densification and environmental disruption caused by climate change, it’s more important than ever to build communities that create space for innovation, a sense of identity, and connection to people. These are complex challenges, but we can face them — together. Creating a great city is more than just sustainable design. It’s about the act of ‘placemaking’ — where diverse people come together to plan, design, manage and program shared-use spaces. It’s a process that evolves and adapts with the city and its residents. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) recognizes the central role of urbanization in sustainable development to “make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” Fortunately, communities across Canada are doing just that…adapting and evolving to better serve the needs of residents, and becoming more inclusive and sustainable at their core. Finding these solutions requires innovation and experimentation. If we harness the great ideas already happening, learn from and become inspired by them, we can create thriving places that accelerate the creation of regenerative, inclusive cities. Here are five projects that highlight sustainability, place-making, inclusivity and innovation…all key ingredients that make a great city.

HALIFAX COMMON, HALIFAX Located downtown, the Halifax Common has been acknowledged by the city as a vital greenspace that offers an inclusive and welcoming space for residents. Through a participatory planning process, where both needs and ideas come from residents themselves, Halifax is proposing readapting the downtown area in preparation for a densifying population. Historically, changes to the Common have been piecemeal. While many residents enjoy a skate on the Oval or the Common Roots Urban Farm, the city is looking to how it can transform the Common with recommendations to ensure it continues to be valuable to residents for years to come. The process of community engagement through participatory planning is an exciting one for the future of our cities.

WARMING HUTS, WINNIPEG Many city spaces are active when the weather is pleasant and mild, but what about in the cold and snow? Public art has the ability to transform spaces in our cities that are sometimes ignored or forgotten. While important year-round, it’s vital during the winter months to encourage people to gather, to connect, and to simply be present. Now replicated in cities across the country, including the popular annual Winter Stations on Toronto’s Woodbine Beach, Warming Huts in Winnipeg was the first Canadian city to host the competition. Since 2009, the city has been inviting artists to design and install interactive art pieces in The Forks area of the city. Placed along the River Trail, the stations provide an artful backdrop for visitors skating along the path.

RUELLE VERTES, MONTREAL Montreal’s Ruelle Vertes work hard. These once underused alleyways with more straightforward functions, such as providing access into backyards and garages, have been transformed into spaces of lush greenery in the city. But it’s not just a simple act of beautification. These 400 laneways counter cement-induced heat, add biodiversity, reduce stormwater runoff, and keep water cleaner, all while creating connections for the community as a safe space to meet, play and enjoy their neighbourhood. It’s a project with community integrated through and through. considerations for clearing a loved one’s estate BY MINDY APPLEBAUM
The clearing of a loved one’s estate is often a dreaded, emotionally charged necessity that may be required with very little notice. It is something that many adult children don’t think about or plan for in advance. By following the next few steps, the estate clearing process can be less expensive, less time consuming and a lot more organized.
What Roles Loved Ones Should Play Not every family member needs to be involved in every estate related decision. This leads to confusion and delays in decision making on trivial matters. Consider having one family member as the point person to work with the building’s concierge or property manager, another working with the realtor, and someone else in charge of organizing friends and family to come look through the contents and choose what they want to keep. Another person can keep track of the finances and estate related expenses. Evaluate who has which strengths and divide and conquer. Do not keep score of who is contributing more or less than the others in helping with the estate. Family members will have different availability as well as different emotional capacity in terms of their ability to manage this difficult process and it is not for others to judge them or harbour resentment.
Consider the Fees Involved There are several costs that will pop up during the estate clearing process. Aside from lawyer fees and fees associated with listing and selling a property, you can also expect to spend on packing materials like boxes, bubble wrap and tape that will be needed to pack up all the contents of the home. Consider buying supplies in bulk, or picking up boxes for free at the grocery store or LCBO. You can also check Facebook for people offering to give away their recently used moving boxes. Should you wish to donate some of the furniture and housewares, you can expect to be charged a pickup fee. Although some donation centres offer tax receipts for the fair market value of the items being donated, very few will send professional movers and a truck to pickup donation items at no charge. delivered to relatives or friends, you will incur moving costs, as well. The home will also need to be thoroughly cleaned and possibly staged before it is listed for sale. With a little budgeting ahead of time and a little research, these costs can be minimized.
Sell Unwanted Furniture One option for raising money to help pay for the estate clearing is to sell the unwanted furniture. There are a few options available to you that are worth exploring: Content Sales, Consignment Stores, Auctions, or selling on Social Media by way of Kijiji and Facebook. Each method will present its own set of unique advantages and disadvantages. FACTORY THEATRE TURNS 50 BY LOUISE NUNN
Twin sisters, Sugar and Grace Ducharme, sit in their house in the northernmost reaches of British Columbia on their 30th birthday. All had been well in their remote two-person world until today when an unusual man arrives at their doorstep. Is he a potential murderer or a love interest? The sisters aren’t certain. Surely, nothing will go wrong if they invite him in to share in the celebrations. Sounds odd, intriguing and alternative? This is the classic Canadian gothic play, Trout Stanley, which will be performed at Factory Theatre as part of its upcoming 2019/20 season. This season marks the “Big 5-0” for the Factory Theatre, and to mark the occasion, the season’s lineup features reimagined classics from across the company’s past, coupled with some innovative new works from contemporary Canadian playwrights, all tied together under the banner, “50 Seasons and Still Fiercely Canadian.”

Created in 1970, Ken Gass and Frank Trotz founded the Factory Theatre Lab in response to a need to feature the real Canada in an otherwise Euro-centric theatre scene. Back then, the overarching story told by theatre productions was of Canada’s colonial roots. While glimmers of original content did surface earlier in French Canada, with Félix-Gabriel Marchand’s production about the lives of Quebecers, Toronto’s theatre scene didn’t catch on until Canada’s 100th anniversary, and the feverish patriotism that surrounding it. In the five decades since it began theatre productions, Factory’s reputation has been coloured by financial troubles and controversy — but the textured and important work of its renowned artistic directors, playwrights and actors have helped ensure its longstanding resilience. Along the way, Factory has experienced some record highs with Canadian classics such as George F. Walker’s Suburban Motel series, and a successful rebranding after a 2011-2012 boycott of the theatre following the dismissal of then Artistic Director Ken Gass. For the 50th anniversary season, Nina Lee Aquino, Factory Theatre’s current Artistic Director, seems to be laying out the company’s legacy, along with her own fierce convictions. This means that the form, content, and casting of all six plays will intrinsically reflect the Canada of today, whether that play is a Canadian classic or a new work — something that Aquino, Factory’s first Artistic Director of colour, considers a no-brainer. “I do believe that if we’re going to do theatre here in Canada, and with Factory being one of the few theatre companies dedicated to enriching the Canadian voice, then we have to tell it like it is, and not just reflect how the country looks demographic-wise. We have to push and we have to put on our stages what we want Canada to be. That’s what I’m always striving towards.”

Aquino, in paying tribute to the legacy of previous Artistic Directors, chose Claudia Dey’s Trout Stanley, which premiered in the early 2000s by A.D. Ken Gass, and House, first mounted in 1992 by A.D. Jackie Maxwell and writer Daniel McIvor’s touring company. Aquino noted that each of these classics reflect the very best of the Gass and Maxwell eras at Factory. McIvor’s House, a solo play about a man named Victor on the verge of a nervous breakdown, will be directed by Aquino herself, who will look at the play from her own new perspective. Three other plays in the lineup — Broken Tailbone, Between Breaths, and One — come from Factory’s CrossCurrents Canada presentation series. A Factory initiative, CrossCurrents Canada creates playwriting opportunities for Canadians of colour from across the country, seeking to level the playing field for visible minority artists in the Toronto theatre industry. “The theatre making here in Canada [is] still lagging behind when it comes to racial inclusion and diversity,” Aquino observes. “It’s still quite predominantly white... and Factory is changing that one production at a time.”

Broken Tailbone is Carmen Aguirre’s Latinx salsa lesson/story-telling hybrid, and combines a workshop feel with an intercultural learning experience of Latin American culture, politics and Carmen’s personal journey. Carmen and director Brian Quirt each have their own histories with Factory — one as a former playwright, the other as company director — and their return after so many years is a testament to Nina’s interest in collaboration. Between Breaths comes to Toronto from Newfoundland. It has ties to Factory through partner and theatre creator Artistic Fraud
of Newfoundland. Between Breaths tells the story of the “Whale Man” from the time when he freed roughly 500 whales from fishing nets off Newfoundland’s coast, to his battle with dementia later in life. The final installment of CrossCurrents is Jason Carnew and Ghost River Theatre’s innovative production, One. Having first seen it during a 2011 SummerWorks performance, Aquino says she was blown away by its ingenuity and is excited for this to be the production that pays tribute to the company’s building itself. One returns to Factory during the second half of the 50th season in 2020. While the coming season is designed to celebrate the past 50 years at Factory, it also aims to look ahead to the next 50, all under a distinctly ‘Aquino’ influence. Ultimately, Aquino hopes that the multicultural, Canadian lens she pushes will continue long after her tenure is finished. She says of the 50th celebration, “For me it was really about redefining — as we’re evolving as Canadians — what the Canadian experience is. Hopefully, the next A.D. that comes after me will do the same, and examine what Canada and being Canadian means again.” With that in mind, perhaps the ultimate summation of Aquino’s 2019/20 season is Lady Sunrise, by award-winning playwright and close friend Marjorie Chan, which will make its world premiere on February 15th, 2020. Lady Sunrise, an unapologetic commentary on the harsh reality of the wealthiest and poorest Asian Canadians in Vancouver, is “theatre with grit” and “fiercely Canadian” — where Canadian means, of course, all ethnicities, colours and backgrounds. Here, Factory will find itself firmly in its sweet spot, as the theatre once again provides a platform for taboo and controversial questions - this time about equality, capitalism, and the underbelly of one of Canada’s most cosmopolitan cities. ew will forget August 20, 2016 as the Tragically Hip broadcast their final concert nationwide from their hometown of Kingston, Ontario. But it was in between the hits, the tears and the reverence, that frontman Gord Downie took a moment to raise another matter that had been consuming him for years. “…the people up north that we were trained our entire lives to ignore. Trained our entire lives to hear not a word of...” Though his speech would last less than a minute, it set the stage for a remarkable final chapter that yielded a flurry of creative output before his untimely death 17 months later. Along with his brother, filmmaker Mike Downie, and the novelist Jeff Lemire, Gord would release Secret Path, an album and graphic novel that reintroduced Canadians to Chanie Wenjack, the 12-year-old Ojibway boy who died of exposure in 1966 after escaping his residential school and attempting to walk 600 kilometres home to Ogoki Post. This was followed by an animated film, live performances, documentaries, and the founding of the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, dedicated to cultural understanding and reconciliation. Today, Mike Downie continues to keep Gord’s dream alive. As a co-founder of the Downie Wenjack Fund, his work provides access to education on the true history of Indigenous peoples in Canada and the history of residential schools, while encouraging reconciliation through programs and special events. This October, for Secret Path Week, Downie will be co-producing a star-studded re-creation of Secret Path Live that’s shaping up to be the cultural event of the season. To mark the occasion, The Collection's Jeremy Finkelstein sat down with the local activist to discuss Secret Path, the Downie Wenjack Fund and his brother’s legacy.

The Collection: How did you first come to learn about Chanie Wenjack?
TC: What was Gord’s reaction?
Mike Downie: I was driving and on CBC
little about something so large. Here’s a guy who’s been touring the country for years, meeting a lot of people...I’m a documentary filmmaker, I’ve been crossing the country telling people’s stories and I knew nothing about it. Between the two of us, we just felt like if we knew so little, there must be millions more like us.
radio was a short documentary by Jodie Porter about this little boy running away from his residential school in 1966. And while I was listening, I thought, ‘residential school,’ I think I know what it is, but I didn’t know a story about a residential school. It kind of piqued my interest, and the part that really got me was when she mentioned that [Chanie] was trying to walk home along the tracks and that his home was 600 kilometres away. Of course, he didn’t make it, he died. Gord and I were going out to lunch the next day, and by the time I went, I’d gone online. Jodie had materials on the CBC site, and I started reading about residential schools, about the system, about him. There was a very powerful article by Ian Adams in Maclean’s magazine. I printed that up, sat down for lunch with Gord, and gave him this article, The Lonely Death of Charlie Wenjack.
MD: We were both stunned that we knew so
There was also a sense that this story had such a universal message. It’s a very simple story: A boy trying to go home. We felt that was something that would resonate. When you have this kind of a national tragedy, with so many kids involved, sometimes big numbers bounce off the brain. I think in telling the story of one, it opens the door to something bigger. And we felt that this was the story that would unlock greater awareness of residential schools and about our treatment of Indigenous Peoples.
TC: When did you begin work on Secret Path?
MD: Immediately, but it followed a circuitous
path. Our feeling was that we would make a live action film, so I put together a package and sent it to a couple writers. If we could get a novella, we could option it, have a script created and start working towards a film. But it went slowly and while we were waiting, Gord being Gord, started going through the research and writing. He wrote ten poems, and those poems told the story, in his way, of the boy leaving the school, and maybe about what happened along the way. The poems didn’t really get us going, but they became very important when Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene) called Gordie one day and said, “I’ve always wanted to make a record with you.” Gordie liked that, and Kevin said, “Have you got any material, songs you’ve been working on?” Gordie said, “No, I haven’t been writing any,’ and then thought, ‘Oh, I’ve got these poems.” That’s what they ended up taking into the studio. It’s a good lesson. You start with an idea and then you get taken in another direction, yet all those decisions added up to something more

important. We ended up with Gord’s record, we took those songs to Jeff Lemire, a fantastic graphic novelist, that ended up turning into the graphic novel. But everything took time. As a matter of fact, it took so much time, that by the time the record was done, the graphic novel was done, and we were still thinking if we could put this into some kind of film, Gordie got sick. And that put everything on hold.
TC: Gord referred to Chanie’s story as Canada’s story, saying we’re not the country we think we are. Can you elaborate? MD: I think Gord was driving at the idea that
as Canadians we think of ourselves as kind and welcoming people. But in many ways we’ve given ourselves a pass when we look at this issue of Indigenous Peoples. When you look at Canada's history, whether it’s the Pass System or Residential School System, there was a plan. And the plan was to eliminate a race of people.
TC: How did the Wenjack family initially receive the Secret Path project? MD: When Gord [went from] writing poems
to going into the studio, we knew we had to reach out to Chanie’s family members. He had several sisters that are still with us. I tracked down Pearl Wenjack. I introduced myself, asked if she knew who Gord Downie was. She didn’t. I asked if she knew the Tragically Hip. She didn’t but there was a hint of recognition. So, I explained who Gord was and that we’d come upon her brother’s story and that Gord was potentially going to record these songs, that we wanted to tell a bigger story, and asked her what her feeling was about this. There was a pause, then she said, “I think that would be great. The only thing I ask is that you come here before this gets released, that you see where he lived in Ogoki Post, Marten Falls, and you see where he’s buried, and you meet us.” And that’s what we did.
MD: There are three films: Secret Path, Gord Downie — Secret Path in Concert, and Finding the Secret Path. Seeing Gord rehearse and perform on screen, giving it everything, was difficult. I worked with some really wonderful people, my producing partner Stuart Coxe, and great editors. It felt pretty important too…there was so much pain around Gord. When he went out on tour with the Hip, people took it really personally and felt a lot of grief, and with the films and the Downie Wenjack Fund, I thought that one thing [we were] able to do was to capture some of that so that it didn’t just leak into the ether. We were trying to direct people a little…if you’re that interested in Gord, maybe you can look deeper into something that he really cared about. We were always trying to give people a way to act rather than just feel bad about a great guy like my brother. TC: What does the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund do? MD: We’re trying to get Canadians to
recognize the impact of residential schools and the impact of policies that affected Indigenous lives and Indigenous families. We’re trying to get more people to participate in reconciliation, and to recognize the possibility for our country. Depending on where you are, Indigenous people have been here for 10, 12 or 15,000 years. So, by going down this path of reconciliation, by imagining a country based on a foundation that didn’t start with colonial contact, but that was there before, that taught the earliest settlers so much, that affected the way they lived and affected a lot of what we think of as Canadian traits, there is an opportunity to go beyond reconciliation. Look at New Zealand and the way the Maori culture has been used effectively to give New Zealanders a sense of national identity. There are a lot of parallels there. Our big programs are the Legacy Schools. We started creating this network where teachers and students are doing acts of reconciliation, bringing this teaching into the classroom, bringing elders into schools. More importantly, for people who aren’t sure how to get started, it gives them a way forward. We started a pilot project trying to get 200 schools, and we’re over 1000 in one year. Now, we have something called Artist’s Ambassadors. We have people FALL 2019 | 37

like July Talk, the Arkells, Max Kerman, drop in to witness what these teachers and kids are doing. It’s typical for them to do a song or invite an Indigenous artist to do something with the kids. It’s about trying to inspire students, but also to recognize what they’re doing. And we have Legacy Spaces where corporations or institutions take a room and convert it. There’s a poster of Chanie and Gord that tells the story of Secret Path, a plaque on the wall, and a smudge bowl. We’ve found that several of these partners have gone way beyond. They’ve taken a boardroom, they've commissioned Indigenous art. These are not front-line things but they draw people in. Maybe it’s the art, maybe it’s the story of Gord and Chanie. But the idea is that this is a start. Some will say, I’d like to walk down this path a little further.
TC: And you're recreating the 2016 concert? MD: At Roy Thompson Hall, October 19th,
we are restaging Secret Path Live. We did it originally October 2016, and Gord and the Secret Path Band — Josh Finlayson, Kevin Drew, Kevin Hearn, Charles Spearin, and Dave Hamelin — performed the record below a massive screen of the animation, with the Wenjack family in the front rows. We’re doing that again. We’ve got the original band and we’ve invited different performers to handle the songs. Roberts, July Talk, Whitehorse and Serena Ryder. It’s an unbelievable lineup. There will be two parts. The first will be a combination of some performance and some of these artists doing other material, and the second will be Secret Path all the way through. It’s an important fundraiser, but also a great cultural event that brings people together, reminds people of this story, but also of the work that still needs to be done.
TC: At the last Tragically Hip concert, Gord said we’ve ignored the people of the north, then challenged the PM to lead. It’s been three years, have we seen improvement? MD: Have Indigenous lives been improved in
the last three years? I don’t think that much. There’s a much greater awareness that there's this divide, that the quality of life is very different, life expectancy is different, teen suicide…the statistics don’t match up at all. I think Canadians are more aware of that. But look at Indigenous lives, and think about all the issues, and ask what it would be like if you took away residential schools. I’m not saying that’s the only piece that has contributed to this harm, but it’s a big one…that you have something run by the two most powerful organizations in the country for 150 years, the government and our religious institutions. And the whole idea was to take children from their home to teach them this other way of living. When you do something like this, generation
after generation…it’s going to take time to repair. That kind of trauma doesn’t go away. A government program doesn’t fix that.
TC: What did it mean to you to create all of this with Gord during his final years? MD: It feels good that, with what Gord was
going through, we were able to harness that and turn it into something positive. When Gord was really ill, this gave us something, and my brother Patrick, to talk about and plan. Gord left me with some personal but some pretty direct instructions. He believed in this and would be happy to see where we are. He saw the potential in putting Secret Path in front of people. With reconciliation, it’s not a government program away from some goal. It requires everybody. It requires all Canadians to find their way to recognize what happened, to recognize the potential, and to see how things could be so different for us. I don’t think you can call yourself a great country when you’ve got part of your population living at the quality of life that many Indigenous people are living. Canada has the potential to be great, but as Gordie said, you gotta take care of everybody. So, to be able to try and do this, and it be a part of Gord’s legacy, makes me feel real good. www.downiewenjack.ca

the opening night of last year’s Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival, the atmosphere was initially fraught, but ultimately hopeful. Katherine Bruce, the festival’s executive director, recalls that there was a sense of urgency at Toronto’s Royal Cinema that evening. In front of a packed house of young adults and outspoken activists, including Commander Chris Hadfield and Dr. David Suzuki, 26-year-old director Slater Jewell-Kemker’s premiered Youth Unstoppable, which chronicles the rise of the global youth climate movement. At one point during the post-film discussion, Suzuki was close to tears as he addressed the filmmaker. “I was really struck by the anxiety in the room for this generation,” Bruce says. “We were a festival, but it was so much more than showing a film. We brought people together, there was discussion, 42 | the COLLECTION
there was meaningful exchange. It was a place for young people to come to try to find answers and solace and support.” The growing concern around the climate crisis has spurred the programmers at Canada’s largest environmental film festival to plan a significant 20th anniversary event. This year’s milestone installment will run from October 15 through 20th, the six days preceding the federal election — one where climate change is expected be a critical issue for many voters.
“I did a lot of research on films, filmmakers, and film production companies around the world, and sent out a call for submissions,” Haslam explains of planning that first gala. “Once the films started coming in, [they] were so compelling that I knew that there was no way we could not do this.” The early festivals relied heavily on grant money; Haslam puts the cost of organizing the 2000 edition at $30,000. Two decades later, the festival remains committed to its non-profit roots and relies

Among the premieres at recent galas were films directed by Canadian elementary school students. The Toronto Eco-Film Lab workshops, run by Planet in Focus, train teachers to use tablets and computer-based filmmaking software that they can later share with students. Bruce estimates that around 30 schools currently

The festival’s beginnings set a standard. In 2000, its debut year, Haslam had no shortage of film offerings. Forty-six films and videos were screened, hailing from 13 countries. That’s nearly the same number of titles that premiered for Toronto audiences in 2018.

“I wanted to use film as a catalyst and inspiration for people… to think about creative ways in which they could, in their own lives, do something positive for the environment,” Haslam says, reflecting on the program’s origins.
Haslam says he takes pride that Planet in Focus has always prioritized the voices of local Indigenous populations and other minority groups that had not seen their stories on the film festival circuit. After Haslam left the organization in 2005, a special award was created in his name and is given to a film that is made by a member of an under-represented community. Zhao Liang’s Behemoth, which explores the environmental, sociological, and public health effects of coal-mining in China and Inner Mongolia, won in 2016. The film was banned in China.

An April report from Environment and Climate Change Canada indicated that the country is warming twice as quickly as the rest of the world, with northern sections heating up at an even more accelerated rate. However, the concept for the 20th season is not to numb festivalgoers with despair — an approach that represents Planet in Focus’ original ethos, says founder Mark Haslam.

But from the start, Haslam also wanted the films to cater to communities rarely represented on screens, believing that environmental film festivals have a responsibility to debunk the perception that environmentalism is a Western concept. “There was this perception that environmentalists were ‘white guys in boats,’” he says, describing organizations such as Greenpeace. “For me, every culture around the world has teachings and ways of relating to land, animals, and the environment that we can all learn from.”

Those dates are not an accident, Bruce says, adding that as environmental consciousness crosses political movements, their festival needs to represent that. “It doesn’t exist in a silo. All of our films, in some way, intersect with [climate change], whether it’s a film about migration, or species habitat loss, or traditional Indigenous communities going against petrochemical companies or mining companies. Climate change infuses almost every topic now.”

A few of these amateur efforts end up getting a spotlight at the October festival. The 2018 event featured three works made by students at the Kahnawake Survival School in Quebec. Planet in Focus also annually honours two “Eco-Heroes” — one Canadian, one international — whose body of creative work helps to raise awareness about environmental issues. This year, Louie Psihoyos, the filmmaker behind the endangered species doc Racing Extinction and an Oscar-winner for 2009’s The Cove, will be awarded with the International Eco-Hero on closing night. In 2017, the festival introduced the Rob Stewart Youth Eco-Hero Award, in honour of the late activist. This year’s prize will go to Autumn Peltier, a member of the Wikwemikong First Nation, in recognition of her advocacy work for clean water for Indigenous communities. Last year, at the age of 13, Autumn addressed world leaders at the UN General Assembly on the issue of water protection.

Though the full line up for this year’s festival was not available at the time of writing, a few program highlights include: Dark Eden, which documents Fort McMurray, home of the third largest oil reserve on the planet, as the filmmakers search for an answer to the question: "How high is the price for a better life?"; The Last Male on Earth, about the last male northern white rhino, Sudan, who passed away in March 2018; and Los Reyes, which takes the audience inside the oldest skatepark in Santiago, Chile, where two stray dogs have made their home in this open space full of hurtling skateboards and rowdy teenagers. People will lay in bed and scroll through Instagram until a brunch picture pops up that is over-the-top egg-oozy, sugar-rushinducing, and completely over-baconed with enough suggestive smell and taste to get them out of bed. Have you ever heard someone talk about their favourite brunch spot? It’s almost a political debate — passion and conviction for all things covered in cheese, baked, then fried, and finally topped with an egg, sunny-side up. Brunch is habitual, comforting, and has the power to let you be you in the most liberating kind of way. Want to crush a bacon doughnut with two mimosas and wear track pants? Sure, why not! It’s brunch.

About seven years ago, before Ky and I started the Fidel Gastro’s food truck or opened Lisa Marie, I used to have this thing called a weekend. It was glorious. I rarely made plans, but one thing was always set in stone: Sunday brunch. I would wake up and walk over to my local brunch spot, The Stockyards. Often going alone, I would sit at the bar and order a cup of coffee, a basil lemonade, a bacon doughnut, and fried chicken and waffles. It was a twohour window in my week reserved for me. I didn’t have to say much. I could just shut out the world while I sat and ate. It didn’t matter how long I waited or how long it took me to finish. It was about being immersed in my brunch life. Monday to Friday, I sat in a cubicle watching the sands of time fall very, very slowly. But, no matter what I had to deal with, I knew that I had brunch to look forward to. When we opened Lisa Marie, we made sure to have a brunch that captured my enthusiasm for this favourite meal. We wanted a menu that would make people say, “What the fudge?” Looking back, we had a lineup every weekend, and I got a rush from working in the kitchen. Of course, the power of brunch is partly a result of its recurring, habitual nature. It involves traditions and go-to spots. I have a pair of official brunch socks. But no matter what your ritual is, it’s the food that creates that initial attachment…like getting bacon and eggs after hockey practice or a stack of pancakes on the first day of summer.
Eggs Benny In my humble opinion, there is no single dish that screams brunch more than Eggs Benedict: the velvety hollandaise sauce, the bright and ready-to-burst perfectly poached egg sitting on top of grilled ham or peameal, and a lightly toasted English muffin. Four individual components that when executed perfectly can be incredible. I didn’t always feel this way about Eggs Benny, but I kept trying until finally my palate caught up to my age. Now, I

can’t get enough. Some of the most iconic brunch spots I’ve eaten at have a version of this dish. So, how many variations of Benny could you possibly create? Therein lies the challenge! Get out and explore and you’ll soon discover flavours inspired by Singaporean, Argentinean, and Italian cuisine.
Chicken + Waffles While Benny is the classic, there’s no dish I’m more enamoured of than fried chicken and waffles. The first time I heard of it my jaw dropped — what a combination! The crisp fried batter holds in all the tender chicken, piping hot, perched on a fluffy waffle. The waffle not only absorbs all the hot grease from the fried chicken but also catches the maple syrup or hot sauce (or both) that you pour over top. When I started seeing more places doing chicken and waffles in Toronto, I knew that brunch was becoming a real thing. It signaled the end of omelettes with your choice of sausage, bacon, or ham. When preparing at home, there really is an art to frying chicken, especially if you want the crispiest, juiciest piece of meat possible. I swear by a deep-fryer, and there are some great countertop deepfryers available.
Pancakes & French Toast I consider myself a nostalgic person. I’m drawn to watching old movies or reliving experiences from my youth, like playing with water guns and eating freezies. Pancakes also have this effect on me: the smell of the batter instantly cooking as it hits the hot buttered griddle; a tall stack with real Canadian maple syrup; the way the syrup pours down the side of the stack; the combination of sweet mixed with fluffy, buttery dough…and then that first bite. If you’re growing tired of your same old pancake and French toast recipes, push the boundaries when mixing sweet and savoury. I do this with my Elvis French Toast where I stuff classic French toast with peanut butter and top it with candied bacon. FALL 2019 | 49
Fun for the whole family The act of eating together is really what brunch is about. Sure, I love digging into my own plate of chicken and waffles, but sometimes family style is the way to go. When cooking for a crowd, I layer textures and flavours that come together in one pot or cast-iron skillet, like my Shakshuka, where everyone eating needs to rip some rustic bread and just start dipping. The best family-style brunches are built around warm, comforting dishes that make you feel good when you eat them. Sharing with others allows you to connect with your friends and family, and to become fully immersed in the ritual of brunch.
Too early? While a cup of coffee or a glass of juice is a great way to start the day, so is an Aperol Spritz Mimosa or Caesar — or even both! I love how fresh and light brunch cocktails are. They don’t need to be incredibly boozy or super strong, but rather the kind of cocktail

that complements a meal. For me, sipping on one is a favourite part of brunch. It was at one of my favourite taco spots that I first tried a Michelada, which is a Caesar made with beer instead of hard liquor. I find that it’s easier to drink, stays colder longer, and the bubbles from the beer add a nice effervescence. It also pairs well with spicy food. Remember, brunch isn’t just a blanket word for eating breakfast in the afternoon. It’s a culture that’s embraced differently everywhere you go. It’s about being okay with waiting in line and finding hidden gems in your city. It’s about snapping and filters and tagging and all the things kids do nowadays. THE LAW OF NUISANCE The recent case of Allen v. MacDougall (2019 ONSC 1939) provides an important reminder on the ownership of boundary trees and the application of the Law of Nuisance. A dispute arose between adjacent homeowners as to a large maple tree straddling the boundary line between their properties. Allen and Byrne ("Applicants") sought to cut down the tree in order to build an extension onto their home. MacDougall and Scott ("Respondents") objected. The Applicants obtained all relevant permits to cut down the tree, including authorizations from the Committee of Adjustments, the Building Department, and the Urban Forestry Department. While the permits were necessary as a matter of compliance, they did not reflect an adjudication of the property rights between the neighbours. The Respondents refused the Applicants' request to cut down the tree as it was "common property." Section 10(2) of the Forestry Act (RSO 1990 F.26), states that, "Every tree whose trunk is growing on the boundary between adjoining lands is the common property of the owners of the adjoining lands." Justice Ed Morgan agreed that the Respondents could be "stubborn" in refusing the Applicants request, noting that "no matter how unreasonable it may seem not to let your neighbours take your property, you can refuse to do so even if the neighbours really need it."1 The Applicants, however, submitted that the tree constituted a nuisance which deprived them of their right to build an extension onto their home. If the tree was a nuisance, the Applicants would be entitled to have it removed, notwithstanding Section 10(2) of the Forestry Act. 52 | the COLLECTION
The Law of Nuisance is a common law tort seeking to balance the property rights of owners — the rights of one to do what they want, and the rights of another to not be interfered with.2 The Supreme Court of Canada previously clarified that for there to be a nuisance, the interference with a property owner’s use and enjoyment of their property must be substantial and the interference must be unreasonable.3 There are limits to the exercise of property ownership rights in a modern urban society. Other examples could include noise, vibrations, and noxious odours. Justice Ed Morgan ultimately dismissed the Application. The tree was not a nuisance to the Applicants during the previous 18 years they resided on the property. It only became a nuisance once they wanted to build an extension. Further, the Applicants did not establish that the destruction of the tree was the only way to extend their home. There were other parts of the land where they could potentially build without cutting down the tree. This is an important reminder not only of the ownership of boundary trees and the Law of Nuisance, but how disputes between neighbours can quickly escalate into large legal fees. THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL HIKE | CRAWFORD LAKE
Visitors to Crawford Lake find themselves at the intersection of science and cultural history. With its meromictic lake, surrounding boardwalk, recreated Iroquoian longhouses, and 19 km network of trails, Crawford Lake has a little something for everyone, while offering a great outing for hikers of all levels of experience. However, it’s the archaeology that’s the truly unique feature at this destination. From 1973 to 1987, excavations uncovered 11 longhouses on the site and over 10,000 artifacts of the Iroquoian people who once lived in the village. Three of the longhouses have been reconstructed based on the archaeological findings. Today, after exploring the natural settings, guests can wander around the village and learn about daily life in the region over 600 years ago.

THE TREASURE MAP HIKE | SPLITROCK NARROWS NATURE RESERVE
This hike boasts rocky outliers, steep cliffs, long views, a glacial spillway, and an impressive crevice system for which Splitrock Narrows is named. The Trail starts along a farm pasture and slopes into a cool, moss covered crevice system, where 420-millionyear-old crinoid fossils can be found. After exploring this side trail, continue on the Splitrock Narrow Side trail for sweeping fall colour valley views. For those with children, why not complete the Dufferin Hi-Land Bruce Trail Club’s Children’s Treasure Hike? Simply print out the Treasure Map and find all the plaques located on the map. Be sure to write a description of each plaque down and then return to the website and fill in the form. If you find all 10 plaques, they will send you a free “Take a Hike” button.

THE TIME-STRAPPED HIKE | ROUGE VALLEY
This close to home, 1.5 km loop, can be done in an hour, giving visitors the fall hike experience without taking too big a chunk out of the day. Don’t let the length fool you…this little trail is proof that size doesn’t matter, with an unbelievable view overlooking Little Rouge Creek and Rouge River Valley.
