WELCOME TO THE CONNECTICUT FORUM!
HAPPINESS, MEANING & FULFILLMENT Dear Friends, Welcome to our Happiness, Meaning & Fulfillment Forum! Tonight’s panelists -- Suleika Jaouad, Esther Perel, Laurie Santos, and moderator Sam Sanders -- will help us answer some very important questions: What can we do to make our lives more meaningful? How do we navigate our relationships with others and understand ourselves? Is it possible to practice happiness? We can’t wait to hear their wisdom, guidance, and inspiration. As many of you know, effective June 30, 2021, I will be stepping aside from my role as CEO of The CT Forum. Working with and interacting with YOU, our incredible Forum Family of subscribers, sponsors, Friends of The Forum, YOUTH Forum members, and volunteers, has been the most rewarding part of my work at The CT Forum.

SULEIKA JAOUAD Author of Between Two Kingdoms, Cancer Survivor, Activist
Suleika Jaouad (pronounced su-LAKE-uh ja-WAD) is the author of the instant New York Times bestselling memoir, Between Two Kingdoms. She wrote the Emmy Award-winning New York Times column “Life, Interrupted” and has written features, essays, and commentary for The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, Vogue, and NPR, among other publications. Jaouad’s mainstage TED Talk was one of the ten most popular of 2019 and has nearly four million views. She is also the creator of the Isolation Journals, a community creativity project founded during the Covid-19 pandemic to help others convert isolation into artistic solitude. Born in New York City to a Tunisian father and a Swiss mother, Jaouad attended The Juilliard School’s pre-college program for the double bass, and earned her BA with highest honors from Princeton University and an MFA in
writing and literature from Bennington College. Jaouad’s career aspirations as a war correspondent were cut short when, at age 22, she was diagnosed with leukemia. She began writing her New York Times column from her hospital room at Sloan-Kettering, and has since become a fierce advocate for those living with illness and enduring life’s many other interruptions. Jaouad served on Barack Obama’s Presidential Cancer Panel, the national advisory board of the Bone Marrow and Cancer Foundation, and the Brooklyn Public Library’s Arts & Letters Committee. She was awarded the Red Door Advocacy & Community Service Award, and has been an artist in residence at Ucross, ArtYard, and the Kerouac Project.

ESTHER PEREL Psychoanalyst, Relationship Expert, Author, Host of Where Should We Begin?
New York Times best-selling author Esther Perel is recognized as one of today’s most insightful and original voices on modern relationships. As a psychotherapist, Perel has helmed a therapy practice in New York City for more than 35 years. In parallel, she serves as an organizational consultant for Fortune 500 companies around the world. Fluent in nine languages, Perel’s celebrated TED Talks have garnered more than 30 million views and her best-selling books have been translated into nearly 30 languages. Perel is an executive producer and host of the award-winning podcast Where Should We Begin? Her new podcast, How’s Work?, focuses on workplace dynamics. Perel has devoted her entire professional life to helping people build thriving relationships. She believes that the quality of our relationships determines the quality of our
lives. Since arriving as a graduate student in the United States, Perel has examined this concept from myriad angles: the nature of cultural and religious identity, the negotiation between tradition and modernity, the ebb and flow between individualism and collectivism. She observed interracial and interreligious couples; the cultural forces that affect gender roles; practices of childrearing; and ultimately, the tensions, obstacles, and anxieties that arise when our quest for love and security conflicts with our pursuit of adventure and freedom. Perel grew up in Antwerp, Belgium, studied in Jerusalem, and attended graduate school in the United States.

DR. LAURIE SANTOS Professor of Psychology at Yale University, Expert in Human Cognition, Host of The Happiness Lab
Dr. Laurie Santos is an expert on human cognition, its origins, and the evolutionary biases that influence our alltoo imperfect life choices. She is also knowledgeable in how behavioral change through positive psychology can lead to a happy and fulfilling life. Currently, Santos is working to positively influence the culture of Yale University by teaching happiness and wellbeing. She created a course, “Psychology and the Good Life,” that became the most popular class taken at Yale in over 316 years. She is also the host of The Happiness Lab. In her course, Santos teaches her 1,200 students about behavioral change through positive psychology. She wants her students to be more grateful, procrastinate less, and increase social connections. She believes that those positive habits will decrease mental health issues and create happier and more motivated students. The popularity of the class
has prompted Yale to create a free online course. From her research, Santos speaks to how we are biologically programmed to be motivated by sex, to be deeply influenced by other people — and to repeat our mistakes. She also provides advice on how to engage our uniquely human faculties to counteract evolution, choose more wisely, and live happier lives. Santos is a professor of Psychology at Yale University, where she serves as Director of the Comparative Cognition Laboratory and the Canine Cognition Center, a research facility that studies how dogs think. She teaches another one of Yale’s most popular courses, “Sex, Evolution, and Human Nature.” Santos was appointed Head of Yale’s Silliman College in 2016. She obtained her Ph.D. in Psychology from Harvard University.

SAM SANDERS Journalist and Host of
It’s Been a Minute with Sam Sanders Sam Sanders is a correspondent and host of It’s Been a Minute with Sam Sanders on NPR, which he calls, ‘a talk show with a heart.’ Each week on the show, Sanders interviews people who deserve your attention and wraps up the week’s headlines with other journalists. Vulture named It’s Been a Minute one of the Top 10 podcasts of 2018, writing that the show, “...searches for depth, outruns categorical boundaries, and aggressively looks forward.” Previously, as a key member of NPR’s election unit, Sam covered the intersection of culture, pop culture, and politics in the 2016 election, and embedded with the Bernie Sanders campaign for several months. He was also one of the original co-hosts of NPR’s Politics Podcast, which launched in 2015. His written work has been published in Politico and The Washington Post.
Sanders joined NPR in 2009 as a Kroc Fellow and since then has worn many hats within the organization, including field producer and breaking news reporter. He has spent time at three NPR Member stations as well: WUNC in North Carolina, Oregon Public Broadcasting, and WBUR in Boston as an intern for On Point. Sanders graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School in 2009 with a master’s degree in public policy, with a focus on media and politics. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, with a double major in political science and music. In his free time, Sanders runs, eats bacon, and continues his love/hate relationship with Twitter.
