2 DEBATING IMMIGRATION
WELCOME TO THE CONNECTICUT FORUM! DEBATING
IMMIGRATION Dear Friends, I am thrilled to welcome you to tonight’s much-anticipated Debating Immigration Forum. We’re very proud to bring the topic of immigration to our Forum platform this evening -- just weeks before a presidential election -- for a timely and important debate about immigration policy, real life challenges, and where we go from here. Our distinguished panel will share their unique perspectives in a live, unscripted, civil conversation, and help all of us better understand this complex and divisive issue, and the terms of the debate playing out on our national stage. I encourage you to listen actively and openly to tonight’s conversation. Please take a moment to visit the websites of the organizations listed on page 20 to learn more about immigrant-serving organizations here in Connecticut. In these tumultuous times, our coming together as a community to talk, listen, and connect, albeit virtually, takes on greater meaning. We are so very thankful for you -- our diverse and wonderful Forum community of subscribers, sponsors, donors, volunteers, and ticket buyers. Thank you for championing our work and mission with your enduring support. Enjoy tonight’s livestreamed Forum (a first!) and stay tuned for more exciting programming coming your way soon from The CT Forum.

LORETTA LYNCH Former Attorney General of the United States
L Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch has been a
leading progressive voice during her more than 30-year career. Lynch is the first female African American Attorney General of the United States, appointed by President Barack Obama in 2015. She also served as the head of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York twice, under both President Clinton and President Obama. Described by President Obama as “the only lawyer in America who battles mobsters, drug lords, and terrorists, and still has the reputation for being a charming ‘people person,’” she has been instrumental in shaping the direction of the nation on a number of tough issues. Lynch improved the relationship between local law enforcement and the communities they serve, and she has taken bold stances on criminal justice reform.
Lynch has spent years in the trenches rising through the ranks as a prosecutor, aggressively fighting terrorism, financial fraud, and cybercrime -- all while vigorously defending civil and human rights. While leading the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, she became known for the highprofile civil rights conviction of two Brooklyn police officers who brutally assaulted Haitian immigrant Abner Louima. While in private practice, Lynch served as a volunteer legal advisor for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, established to prosecute those responsible for human rights violations in the 1994 genocide in that nation. Born in Greensboro, NC, Lynch is the daughter of Lorenzo and Lorine Lynch, whose shared commitment to justice inspired her career in public service. She attended Harvard University and the Harvard School of Law.

JOSE ANTONIO VARGAS
Pulitzer Prize-winning Journalist, Filmmaker, and Immigration Advocate L Jose Antonio Vargas is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist,
Emmy-nominated filmmaker, and theatrical producer. A leading voice for the human rights of immigrants, he founded the non-profit media and culture organization Define American, named one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company. His best-selling memoir, Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen, was published by HarperCollins in 2018. Most recently, he co-produced Heidi Schreck’s acclaimed play What the Constitution Means to Me, which opened on Broadway in 2019. In 2011, The New York Times Magazine published a groundbreaking essay Vargas wrote in which he revealed and chronicled his life in America as an undocumented immigrant from the Philippines. A year later, he appeared on the cover of TIME magazine with fellow undocumented immigrants as part of a follow-up cover story he wrote.
Vargas then produced and directed Documented, an autobiographical documentary feature film that aired on CNN and received a 2015 NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Documentary. Also in 2015, MTV aired White People, an Emmy-nominated television special he produced and directed on what it means to be young and white in a demographically-changing America. Passionate about the role of arts in society and promoting equity in education, he serves on the advisory board of TheDream.US, a scholarship fund for undocumented immigrant students. A product of the San Francisco Bay Area, Vargas is a proud graduate of San Francisco State University, where he was named Alumnus of the Year in 2012, and Mountain View High School. An elementary school named after Vargas opened in his hometown of Mountain View, CA, in 2019.

EVAN OSNOS Journalist, National Book Award-winner, and Staff Writer at The New Yorker
L The New Yorker staff writer and National Book Award-winning author Evan Osnos specializes in politics and foreign affairs, spanning the U.S., the Middle East, East Asia, and China. He won the National Book Award in 2014 for Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China. Co-author of the lead story, “Trump, Putin, and the New Cold War,” about Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, Osnos also wrote the cover story “The Risk of Nuclear War with North Korea.” Traveling to Pyongyang, North Korea for rare interviews with government officials, Osnos discussed their view of the Trump Administration and the prospect of war with the United States. Based on his eight years living in Beijing, Age of Ambition is a multi-layered look at the rise of the individual in China and the clash between aspiration and authoritarianism. A Pulitzer Prize-finalist, Age of
Ambition was called “a splendid and entertaining picture of 21st-century China” by The Wall Street Journal. The Washington Post wrote that “Osnos has portrayed and explained…this new China better than any other writer from the West or the East.” In 2003, Osnos embedded himself with the U.S. Marines during the invasion of Iraq and spent two years as the Chicago Tribune’s Middle East Correspondent. His piece “The Fallout,” about the events and aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear meltdown, won a 2012 Overseas Press Club Award. Osnos graduated magna cum laude from Harvard. A Fellow at the Brookings Institution, he is a contributor on This American Life and Frontline, and has made numerous appearances on Morning Joe, and Fareed Zakaria GPS. This is Osnos’ second time as a Connecticut Forum moderator.
