Hot Nights, Cool Rides car show celebrates 22nd year From staff reports

OREST CITY— From custom-built Rat Rods to luxurious Lamborghinis valued at $500,000, join the thousands of spectators who return every year for the “Hot Nights, Cool Rides” car, truck and motorcycle show in downtown Forest City Saturday, Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. With more than 400 vehicles in the show, there is plenty of eye candy and entertainment, along with food and fun, to go around. Kick off the weekend on Friday night, and visit three different Main Street restaurants to hear live bluegrass and classic hits from the 1950s and 1960s.

Driving Mrs. Shirley By ERIN KIDD The Daily Courier

UTHERFORDTON— When car enthusiasts put on their Hot Nights, Cool Rides T-shirts this year they will be honoring the memory of a very special woman. This year's logo features a purple and silver 1948 Ford Coupe, owned by Bill Shehan in Rutherfordton. The Forest City Merchant's Association selected the car to be featured on the shirts after last year's car show. The coupe brought joy to a family and gave them a chance to spend time together. In the words of Van Shehan, Bill's son, the
story behind the car should be called "Driving Mrs. Shirley." Bill, who graduated from R-S Central High School in 1958, met his wife Shirley Mae Shehan when he went to Blanton Business College in Asheville. Shirley was from Spruce Pine. "We graduated and went our separate ways. She called me every day and sometimes twice a day. She hated it and finally couldn't stand it anymore," Bill said. Once they reunited in Rutherford County, Bill and Shirley were married in 1960. He was 20 and she was 18. Bill started a Please see Page 16

OREST CITY — When the Marine Corps League (MCL), Chris S. Ebert Det. #1221, arrives for the annual car show in Forest City on Saturday, they'll be doing more than coordinating the downtown event. In addition to putting up barriers and making sure everyone is safe, the league will be be serving "Devil Dogs" — hot dogs — to the public. League commandant, said the Devil Dogs will be "the best deal in town" on Saturday. For $3 a person can buy a Devil Dog, chips and a beverage. For brave souls, there will be jalapenos on the side. "Oh we couldn't put those on all the hot dogs," Swope said. “Devil Dog” was a motivational nickname for a U.S. Marine that was earned in WW1 when the Germans likened the Marine to “dogs from hell”. 'Blood, Sweat and Tears' trophy has significant meaning By JEAN GORDON The Daily Courier

OREST CITY — When the awards and trophies are presented Saturday after the 22nd annual car show in Forest City,one award “ Blood, Sweat and Tears� trophy is dear to a Rutherfordton family. The trophy is awarded by Anita Arrowood in memory of her father and mother, the late Don Ray Ford and Kay Alley Ford, owners of the former Dairy'O off U.S. 64/74 outside of Rutherfordton. The restaurant was sold about seven years ago, but is still open today as Dairy O, Pizza restaurant. "Daddy had five or six old cars and they t just enjoyed old cars and the community," nsaid Arrowood. 0 The couple had five children and accord-

She said they would donate money to the car show and held raffles, giving the money to others.

The "Blood, Sweat and Tears" trophy is a plaque that can come with monetary donations, ranging from $50 to $250, Arrowood said. Gift cards for food are also given. "There has to be a story behind the winner," she said. Someone who had worked hard and sweat blood and tears are always a consideration, Arrowood said. Arrowood's brothers select the winner after learning the personal stories. The trophy is brought back every year and awarded to another person.

trucking company in Forest City and they had three children. When Shirley was 46, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Because she became wheelchair-bound it was difficult for the family to do any activities together. That's where the car came in. Bill had it built for Shirley. "It took two years. I hired someone to do it because I didn't want to put my wrenches on that thing," Bill said. "It's purple because she liked that color. I also have a 1955 Chevy truck that's
purple and silver. I built that for me and gave her the car." Once the car was complete, the Shehan's began taking it to car shows every weekend. They also became two of the founding members of the Rutherford County Cruisers. "At first we hauled it to the shows because we didn't want to get it dirty, but then I decided we were going to drive
it. I'd load her up in the wheelchair, open the door, pick her up and put her in the seat and then sit the wheelchair behind her," Bill said. "She liked it. It was a good way for the family to spend time together because during the week I worked at the trucking company." The car won several trophies, also taking home top awards at previous Hot Nights, Cool Rides shows. Bill said that Shirley loved going to the

Shirley died at the age of 71 on Aug. 4, 2012. It was the Saturday before that year's Hot Nights, Cool Rides car show where she was planning to be with her car. She said there will be 30 Marines “on duty” helping the Merchants Association all day and manning the sales of car show T-shirt– their booth will be right outside the Car Show Headquarters on Main St. The Devil Dogs will be served from the same Merchants Association building. The Marine Corps League also has a special trophy award that they select each year among the car show entries. The award winning car generally has some sort of veteran connection, said Withrow. "We help the town and the town helps us," Swope said. They needed a place to meet and the town needed someone to help with its events. The town allows the league to utilize the Merchants Association's building for its weekly meeting. They assist with the Thanksgiving lighting ceremony, Christmas Parade and also developed the Memorial Day ceremony. This year,the MCL has the official designation as a Toys For Tots Collection organization which will be featured prominently during the town's entire Christmas events season. They also put out all the American flags on all holidays. "The Town and Merchants simply could not put on these special events without their assistance," Withrow said.
