TOMMY MARTINEZ If Tommy Martinez isn't already on your radar, it’s time to get to know him. The Good Trouble actor, who radiates good vibes both on and off screen, has quickly become a fan-favorite. We talked to the rising actor about how he brings his character to life. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by GUS & LO
Let’s talk Good Trouble! What initially drew you to the show? Once I saw the character description, I knew that the role was for me. It spoke to me on such a balanced level in my life. Coming out to LA to become an artist, I knew that I needed a balance of that dream and reality; I needed to keep myself financially afloat so I could pursue acting. In Gael’s case, he takes a job at a tech company so he can be stable enough to pay rent, as well as paying for his art supplies. I’ve never personally related to a character like I have with Gael. It just felt right. For those who haven’t seen it yet, how would you describe your character? Gael is somewhat of a mysterious person who doesn’t open up to just anyone, but he’s always kind to every soul he passes. He’s an artist who paints and sculpts and he just has that creative touch. He’s a loving brother, yet at times like many of us, it takes a few kicks in the ass to see the reality of a situation. He’s a passionate lover with his beating heart worn on his sleeve. I guess you can say that he gets himself into entanglements that cause some emotions to flare and create problems. He’s not a bad guy though...these
kinds of situations show us the reality of being 20-something and navigating the world alongside love for other souls and the ambitions of that person. What does it mean to you to portray a character that’s been so well received by the LGBTQ+ community? It’s truly been an honor. Even as I type this, I can’t grasp the realness of it all and how I relate to Gael and the people who walk alongside him. My hometown in Florida was quite traditional and predominantly Catholic, given the Latin population. So, topics such as bisexuality were never talked about in school, and had a negative connotation placed with it. After moving out to LA and surrounding myself around this community, I’m learning everyday that it’s not just black and white. I just can’t shake the feeling of acceptance from the LGBTQ+ community at one of the panels we did with some of the cast and creators. Truly a beautiful moment and feeling. What can fans expect to see in future episodes? Love maintains a strong role throughout the episodes of this season, but that’s not the only thing. Family comes into play, and then the focus

on Gael’s art also tags along. It’s a big beautiful mess, with the same essence of The Fosters. Most of all, its change that happens with the words each and every character speak with. I really don’t see it as just a show...this is a movement spearheading forward to shift perspective. Are there any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from filming that you can share? There’s a ton of dancing going on in the makeup trailer when we’re all packed in there. It’s the purity in moments like those that really make me smile. We’re all so damn happy together, and happy because of what we get to do. However, you guys will have to check out the bloopers that they have gathered together after those months of shooting ... SO MANY GOOD MOMENTS. How does the cast like to bond when the cameras aren’t rolling? It feels like we’re always together! We’re either gathering in the makeup trailer, hopping in and out of each other’s trailers or just munching together at craft services. We also like meeting up for drinks/ food when we’re not working. We’re constantly learning more about each other and we love one another even more for it. What are you loving on TV right now? Honestly, I don’t spend enough time on the couch watching anything. I’m normally out and about, which I think is good for my mental health. I think I’ve
7
always loved real stories that are filmed in a way that anybody could relate to, and make them truly think deeper into their minds. Thought provoking films and shows that viewers can dive into conversations about the matters at hand. For example, the current situations with sex trafficking and the lack of knowledge about certain human conditions and diseases. That’s what I’d want to see. When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? A biopic! I don’t know who I’d like to play, but I trust the universe that it’ll come in due time. I want to challenge myself as an actor and completely immerse myself in someone’s life to portray them in the most accurate way possible. That’s the challenge I set for myself. When you’re not busy on set, what are you usually up to? Rock climbing, riding my motorcycle, taking my dog to the park, trying new restaurants with my girlfriend. This hiatus has been a bit of a whirlwind so I just relaxed and did some travels to national parks to ground myself and breathe. Any special message for fans/viewers? Dream big, love deeply, write to yourself when dark clouds loom above, cherish the people who really love you, walk barefoot in national park or any park for that matter so you can feel the earth and the life around you... and kill everyone with kindness.

ciara riley
A total scene-stealer in the Disney Channel Original Movie, Kim Possible, Ciara Riley Wilson shines as Athena, the newest member of Team Possible. From behind-the-scenes moments to audition secrets, the actress gave us all the inside scoop! words by VANESSA SALLES photo by RYAN WEST
Let’s talk Kim Possible! How did you know you wanted to be a part of the live-action release? When it was announced that they were bringing Kim Possible back as a live-action movie, I knew right away that I wanted to be a part of it. The empowering story of this strong teen heroine is so important to introduce to a new generation. I’m so grateful to be a part of a project that highlights girl power!
For those who haven’t seen the movie yet, what should they expect? There really is something for everyone in this movie. Viewers should expect action packed fight scenes, lovable characters, hilarious comedic moments, and valuable lessons in the movie. What I love about this movie is there is not a dull moment and it will keep you captivated from beginning to end.
What can you tell us about your character, Athena? Athena is a new girl at Kim and Ron’s school who is the ultimate fan of Kim Possible. When she’s having a rough first day of high school, Kim and Ron take her under their wing and she eventually becomes a part of the action as the newest member of Team Possible!
What was your audition process like? I originally auditioned for Kim early in the process! I had four callbacks for Kim before going back again to audition four more times for Athena. It was interesting to get into the mindset of Kim and it helped tremendously for my character because she is the ultimate fan of KP. The audition process for Athena was very exciting because she is a new character who wasn’t in the cartoon series. I got to create a world and personality for her and was able to bring some of myself into her character as well.
Are there any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from filming that you can share with us? There were so many memorable behind the scenes moments! Every day on set with the cast was so entertaining and unforgettable. My favorite day of filming was an overnight shoot at the Vancouver Aquarium. We got a special night tour of the sealife exhibits, stayed up all night laughing endlessly between takes, and went out to breakfast in matching pajamas in the morning. How did the cast like to bond off camera? Like our characters in the movie, Sadie, Sean, and I are all best friends. At the beginning of filming, we made a Vancouver bucket list to complete with each other during weekends and downtime! We explored popular tourist spots like Granville Island, went to tons of gift shops, completed escape rooms, and watched a bunch of movies.
What’s on your bucket list for the year? I would love to travel this year! We filmed Kim Possible in Vancouver, Canada, and it was amazing to be able to explore a different country. That was the first time I had been out of the United States, so I’d love to travel to more places. Hopefully an new role takes me to another exciting country this year! When you’re not busy on a set, what are you usually up to? When I’m not on set, I train in dance and acting classes. What can I say, I love what I do as a career and do it in my downtime as well! However, I’ve recently been spending a lot of my time learning how to drive a stick shift with my dad! THE DAILY SHUFFLE 10

sam setton If you’re looking for an artist to top all your favorite playlists, get acquainted with Sam Setton. The NYC based R&B-meets-pop artist provides heartfelt vocals over warm electronic-infused production and will likely become one of your new faves! words by VANESSA SALLES photo by ERIK WASHINGTON
Let’s talk about your upcoming single, “Hurts So Much” – what’s the story behind the track? It’s a story inspired by a breakup I went through. It’s told from the perspective of someone who just recently went through a breakup and is romanticizing the relationship. They are begging their ex to take them back in order to work on making the relationship better than it ever was. Any memorable moments when creating/recording it? Yes, actually! I’m based in NYC but at the time we recorded HSM, I was in LA for a few weeks taking meetings and finishing up other tracks with Alexander, the producer I work with. One day, we had invited a few people over to hang at his house (shoutout Didi) and I was just messing around with the keyboard while we were talking and I started to play/sing the early version of HSM… Everyone was vibing to it and so we started the recording right on the spot! What’s the songwriting process usually like for you? The process for me is almost always the same. I start by sitting at the keyboard at home, late at night, starting with an idea I had written in my notes app or with a cool chord progression. I usually create some melodies and start to write a verse or chorus. Then, I sit on it for weeks or months, crafting the song until it sounds right to me. When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) do you admire?
Great question. I thought about this for a while and I’m honestly not really inspired by anyone in particular. I guess I do pick up small things from some artists here and there but I just try and be myself when I’m on stage. I focus on really getting emotional with the performance and just try and bring the energy every time. What do you hope listeners take away from your songs? Everyone has their own relationship with the music they listen to, but I’d love for my fans to see and understand the stories behind each of my tracks and be able to relate to them while also enjoying the sonics. Who do you think is killing it in the music scene right now? GASHI, Alec Benjamin and Cautious Clay. What’s something you’d like to see more of in the industry? I’d have to say more awesome female producers and more independent artists supporting each other. What’s on your bucket list for this year? Touring the country, releasing another 6-8 songs, and playing a show overseas! Any special message for fans? If you’re a fan, or even a casual listener, I love and appreciate you. I got some more music and a great live show coming to a city near you. Follow me on socials to be a part of this journey with me!

heather hemmens A scene-stealer on The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico, Heather Hemmens shines as the fan-favorite Maria. From set moments to upcoming storylines, the actress opened up about what fans can expect this season! words by VANESSA SALLES photo by BRIAN HIGBEE
Let’s talk Roswell, New Mexico! Take us back to the beginning; how did you know you wanted to be involved with this show? I’ve always been obsessed with Aliens! Pure coincidence that Roswell came along, and after I read the script and learned more about Maria, I knew I was in love with this story.
What’s something about the show/set life that fans might be surprised to learn? How much we all get along in real life. Maria and Isobel don’t get along on the show, but Lily and I actually lived together while filming! We’d have trouble shooting snarky scenes because we love each other so much and couldn’t stop laughing.
For those who haven’t seen the show yet, how would you describe your character, Maria? She is a firecracker! She always has something truthful, fun and edgy to say. She lets people know exactly how she feels but delivers bad news with a hug. Always ready for a party, because she owns a bar.
What’s the reaction from viewers been like so far? Very kind and supportive. Of my character, of the show, our fans are the best!
Are there any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from filming that you can share? Karaoke night! After a long week of filming, the cast loved to blow off steam a this dive bar that has the most entertaining karaoke singers in the world. What should fans be expecting from the upcoming episodes? Maria’s mom is introduced soon! We learn a lot more about why Maria never left Roswell, her personal struggles and how she has built her inner strength. Also, Maria sings in episode 9! Lots of fun stuff coming up.
What’s the best way for fans to get your attention online? I read a lot of comments but I don’t always have the time to personally respond to them. However, the cast and I always set time aside to engage with fans whenever we’re doing an Instagram takeover or live-tweeting an episode! That’s always the best time to talk! Any special message for fans/viewers? Thank you for watching and I promise there are so many shocking and beautiful moments coming this season. Stay tuned!

DALLAS LIU Already one of the year’s best shows, Hulu’s PEN15 is a total must-watch. Breakout actor Dallas Liu stars as the too-cool Shuji Ishii-Peters and delivers some of the show’s best one-liners. If he isn’t already on your radar, it’s time to change that. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by THE RIKER BROTHERS
Let’s talk PEN15! What is it that drew you the show? I was initially drawn to the title itself. Just by seeing PEN15, it brought back so many middle school memories that I forgot about. But when I read the story description, I thought that the idea of giving an unfiltered view of how middle school really was would be absolutely hilarious.
Nichole Bloom? Ella was a project that made me really love directing and cinematography. I got to spend so much time learning from Dan Chen on set. Working with Nichole Bloom was super fun. In between takes, she would say something really funny and it’d be really difficult to keep a straight face. Her acting was really amazing.
How would you describe your character, Shuji? I would describe him as your typical teenager. He has an attitude and thinks he’s way cooler than everyone, but when it comes down to the people he cares about, he protects them.
What’s on your bucket list for the year? Hopefully get a second season for PEN15! Other than that, I’d like to work on more big projects and I really really want to travel across Europe and eat a bunch of food.
Are there any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from filming that you can share with us? The first day that I arrived on set, Maya had her wig on and I thought that she had actually gotten a fullon bowl-cut! I was in complete shock and thought she really took it to the next level.
With a growing social following, what’s the best way for fans to get your attention online? It would definitely have to be Instagram because that’s my main source of social media. I always read my DM’s and comments. When you’re not busy on set, what are you usually up to? A lot of the time, I’m either skating, surfing, snowboarding, or doing photography stuff with my friends. You can find me on Melrose and Fairfax in LA a lot, either shopping or just hanging out with my friends.
What were your middle school days like? My middle school days were pretty similar to those in PEN15. The only difference I noticed was our clothing and the Internet. The Internet was much more developed around my time in middle school and the clothing was different. But as far as gossiping, teasing each other, and friend groups, Any special message for fans/viewers? they were pretty close to each other. Thank you for all the support! I feel truly blessed and wasn’t expecting this big of a reaction from Tell us about the drama short, Ella – what was everyone. I’m extremely thankful for every single it like working on that and working alongside one of them.

Starring on the record-breaking hit series Grey’s Anatomy, Camilla Luddington shines as fanfavorite, Jo Karev. Having joined as a series regular in its tenth season, the English actress describes the gig as a dream come true. “It was such a surreal experience because I had been a fan of the show for so long,” she explains. “Grey’s Anatomy was one of the first shows I started watching when I moved to Los Angeles so it still feels unreal to me that I get to be apart of it. It was truly a rush to be walking those halls for the first time and to be working alongside the same people that I had been watching on TV. It’s been such a journey and I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to do it for as long as I have.” Recalling her first time on set, Camilla says she couldn’t help but be taken over by nerves. “I remember thinking ‘Oh my God, I’m a terrible doctor. They’re going to fire me,’” she laughs. “My first scene was with Ellen [Pompeo] and it was a monologue that was packed with medical jargon. I had to memorize everything overnight and I remember feeling so intimidated by everyone. Of course, as nerve-racking as it all was, it was so incredibly fun. The nerves were definitely balanced with excitement. All I can say is that it was, and still is, an unforgettable experience.” With a fan base that’s as fiercely protective as Grey’s Anatomy’s, viewers needed a little extra push to embrace Jo as part of the team and a potential part of Alex’s love life. “Honestly, I think Jo was a tough sell to the viewers,” the actress says. “People were very protective over Alex and Izzy’s relationship and the fans didn’t want Jo to replace her. I think it took awhile for viewers to really like her and accept her as Alex’s newest love interest. Slowly but surely, Jo forced her way into the hearts of everyone!”
Fast forward to season 15, fans of the show can’t imagine Jo and Alex with anybody else. “I probably love Jolex more than the viewers do,” Camilla laughs. “I love it because I’m in it everyday. It’s impossible to not be invested when we’ve been at this for so long. I love them together so much and I just hope that they never break up. I know it’s Grey’s Anatomy and that anything can happen at anytime, but I hope Jolex is forever.” Having found a safe space in one another, Jo and Alex connect on a level that can’t be denied. “I think they’re both very understanding of each other’s backgrounds and they allow each other to fall and trust that the other will catch them,” the actress explains. “They bring out the best in each other and I hope that we get to see them do that for a very long time because it’s so much fun to watch them interact. They’re so playful as a couple and they’re still so flirty and romantic with each other; I think they compliment each other so well.” When it comes to her onscreen evolution, Camilla describes Jo’s character development as an actor’s dream. “It’s been wonderful,” she gushes. “I’ve been playing this role for seven years now and, with a role like that, you always hope that there’s been some sort of growth or evolution as the time goes by. I think what I’m happiest about is her being able to let down her guard enough to let someone else in. Before Alex, it was very difficult for Jo to love and trust someone, due to her past experiences. This season, you really just get to see her enjoy being in love and accepting love back, which has always been hard for her. I think it’s been a beautiful evolution, for sure.” On the professional front, Jo’s come into her own as a talented surgeon. “As an intern, we watched her make all the intern mistakes. Now, she’s really
THE DAILY SHUFFLE 20
“The fans are the reason that we all get to make this incredible show. Truly, we can’t thank them enough. We all feel so incredibly grateful that we get to do this everyday.” holding her own and it’s exciting to watch her take charge of her career. I’d say that her ultimate career goal is to win awards and be apart of something innovative that she could say was her own. Ultimately, she wants to follow in Meredith Grey’s footsteps – who wouldn’t want to do that?!” In true Grey’s fashion, the medical drama often features storylines that hit close to home to its viewers. “There are definitely some heavy topics on this show,” the actress notes. “To prepare, it’s all about doing as much research as we possibly can. With Grey’s, we’re very fortunate enough to be able to reach out to groups and have conversations with organizations to make sure we’re fully informed. We never want to go into any of these storylines without being equipped with the knowledge that we need. Of course, there’s space to take some artistic license to be able to make the experience and storyline your own and make it be specific to the character. We definitely have many conversations and prep-work so we’re not going into any heavy storyline blind.” “When the Matthew Morrison episode aired and fans learned more about Jo’s abusive relationship, it resonated with a lot of people,” she adds. “I think, for some, the episode was a triggering one and they were able to see themselves in Jo’s past relationship. I had a lot of people write to me online and let me know that they saw similarities in the relationships that they had been in and that they understood the pain and manipulation that comes with that abuse. I think that episode and storyline was probably the time that I was reached out to the most by fans and viewers. It was definitely tough but I think it’s important that
21
we have those heavy topics on the show because you never know who’d be able to relate.” As for dream storylines, Camilla hopes that Jo will get to be a mother. “I would love to see Jo and Alex have babies at some point,” she gushes. “I really want to see Jo take on motherhood and see what that’d bring out in her and how she’s challenged by it. I think it’d be so interesting and rewarding to see Jo and Alex take things to that level.” “Ever since becoming a mother, the storylines of the show just hit me differently,” she adds. “Any storyline with kids and/or pregnancy hits so much deeper now. Being a mom has changed things because it makes me think of my own life when I’m working.” Officially the longest-running prime time medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy never fails to deliver. “I still feel the very same way at every table read,” Camilla says. “I get so anxious about whatever’s set to happen and I always find myself flipping ahead to find out whether or not everything’s okay. It’s crazy how this show still finds ways to surprise me! I’m also blown away by the fans. They are the reason that we all get to make this incredible show. Truly, we can’t thank them enough. We all feel so incredibly grateful that we get to do this everyday.” The biggest lesson Camilla’s learned on set? “I could never be a doctor in real life,” she laughs. “Honestly, I have no idea how they do it. I give major props to all the real doctors because it’s something I could never do - I think I’ll just stick to pretending to be one on the show!”

yola words by VANESSA SALLES photo by ALYSEE GAFKJEN
23
A true star on the rise, Yola is a name you won’t soon forget. The British country-soul singer-songwriter just debuted her newest record, Walk Through Fire, and we talked to her about the making of the repeat-worthy release. Take us back to the beginning; what has your musical journey been like so far? My musical journey has been one that has been fraught with commitment issues, it seems. When I was a kid, I spent my time hiding my true musical affiliations and trying to fit in. It wasn’t cool to be into classic country music in the South west of England in the 90s. Music was tribal at that time and although many people had eclectic tastes, you had to pick sides from time to time. It made it harder to start out. I tried my hand singing jazz, singing over dance music and neo soul music, just trying to fit in. I don’t think anyone really understood my voice at that time. Soon, I turned to being behind the scenes, writing lyrics and melodies that were essentially soul and gospel and then reworking them for clients. It was a round about way of doing what I already did naturally, but never close enough. Tell us about your upcoming single, Love All Night (Work All Day) – what’s the story behind the track? I used to work a whole host of jobs when I was starting out. I washed dishes, worked in a call center, and taught music workshops to kids from all walks of life. This song is about people that work hard to be able to do what they love the rest of the time. In an industry that is seeing an increasing gulf between the rich and poor when it comes to artists that reach the top flights of music, this is an ode to the artist who didn’t have rich parents or a trust fund to help them in the difficult times. What’s the creative process usually like for you? Usually, my creative process involves sitting on a couch with a guitar on my belly, half watching something meditative like David Attenborough shows while half strumming and half mumbling something that turns into a verse, a chorus or a hook. I let it come to me organically. It’s usually at some ungodly hour where the film between the conscious and unconscious is at its most
ambiguous. Of course, for this record, I returned to my collaborative mind. We sat round a table talking about the long and winding road of my life and put that journey to music. How would you describe your personal sound? Who are some of your biggest influences? When you listen to the album, you’ll get the idea that describing what I do in terms of genre can get longwinded. There are classic forms of country, country-soul, soul, roots, pop, pop-rock and even a ballad on this record. These genres are very closely linked, so the transition is easy enough to make. I loved acts like Sheryl Crow, Dolly, Aretha, Beck, Mavis, Tina, CSNY, The Byrds and The Everly Brothers! Overall, what do you hope listeners take away from your music? I just want listeners to feel what I’m feeling. It’s so important to me to bring the visceral nature of listening to music to an album, to have the listener connect with the lyrics of the feeling I was trying to get across in my delivery. Sharing an emotion is the act of empathy and I think that’s important in the world we live in today. When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) do you take inspiration from? I have a few heroes that I take inspiration from. I love Dolly’s stage banter and her easy-going joking way. I really took a lot from that into the way I am, live. I think I try to channel Janis Joplin in my moments of high energy and, almost polar to that, I try to channel Aretha in my more serene moments. Any special message for your fans? Just a heartfelt thank you to my fans for being patient as I found the right people to work with on this record. I took my time making sure everything was right and you all gave me that time. I can’t do this without all of your love and support! THE DAILY SHUFFLE 24

gunnar gehl Best described as a story-teller, Gunnar Gehl sings about what we’re all feeling. Paying attention to the small moments within the ordinary, Gunnar preserves those feelings through writing and singing, making for some pretty remarkable music. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by CHRIS WEIGEN
What can you tell us about your musical journey so far? It’s been absolutely amazing. It’s a crazy, crazy industry, and I’m just making music and performing for people who want to hear it! Let’s talk about your latest song, ‘Heartbeat’! What inspired the track? ‘Heartbeat’ is a twist on heartbreak. Instead of being sad and dwelling on this breakup, it was a switch of emotions into saying I’m done wasting time on people like you. (I know, kind of savage!) Any memorable moments when creating/ recording it? Yeah, we actually created this song really quick. It was incredibly fun, and just a real solid easy process to write this one. What’s next, music-wise? What should fans be expecting? Right now, I’m just taking the time to create really good music. Once we have that, everything will fall into place. For my fans, just be patient with me… it’s all going to be worth it, I promise! When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) inspire you? I would say I get a lot of my presence from John Mayer. The way he plays music, whether it be 100 people or 100 thousand people... he’s always just playing because he loves music, and I have a similar mindset to that. My actual movement and
energy is probably most similar to a Bruno Mars. It’s Gunnar. What do you hope fans take away from your music? I hope my fans take away whatever they need from my music. Obviously I write these songs with purpose to my life, but I want fans to hear my music and be able to interpret them in their own way, to their own lives. Who do you think is killing it in the music scene right now? I have a lot of respect for many artists right now. I think Camilla Cabello is doing amazing, as well as Ariana Grande, and I think the main reason is the connection that they have with their fans. My fans are family and I think that mindset goes a long way when it comes to the industry. With a growing social following, what’s the best way for fans to get your attention online? I try to go through my DMs everyday! I see almost all of my “tagged in” posts, so that’s my advice, but if I get to your DM, I always respond! What’s on your bucket list for this year? I want to perform in an arena. That’s big on the bucket list. Any special message for fans? Thank you for your constant support. I love you all so much and I can’t wait for this next year!

natalee linéz A new face on Freeform’s hit series Siren, Natalee Linéz has cemented herself as one to watch. Starring as Nicole Martinez, the rising actress will undoubtedly become one of your on-screen favorites.
What initially drew you to Siren? When I got the audition for the show, I had heard of Siren but had yet to see it. So, of course I bingewatched the whole first season that day! I quickly became a fan of all the mysterious characters of Bristol Cove!
upcoming episodes? We really ‘dive’ into the Mermaid world, which is pretty cool. Ha-ha. But really, you will get a better view into their lives. And of-course, my character Nicole is definitely up to something. I am excited for everyone to see how my character unravels.
How would you describe your character, Nicole? Nicole is very driven and ambitious. Although young, she has her mind set on the goals she needs to achieve. She’s a very bad-ass character and I’m so lucky to play her!
What’s on your bucket list for the year? I want to create/start a business but I still haven’t figured out exactly what that’ll be. I want to book two films, travel to Europe, and work for a charity that’s different than the one I am already involved with. (P.S. that charity is called School on Wheels, if anyone is interested in getting involved!)
Are there any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from filming that you can share with us? Oh my, so many! Everyone in the cast and crew is so incredibly nice and we instantly clicked. In the green room, we love to play HEADS UP! It gets very loud sometimes and you can hear people outside the room being like “QUIET ON SET,” haha! Also, we’ve made some really funny videos, that we’ll probably be posting after that specific episode airs. We can’t share it now because we’re in wardrobe that can’t be shown yet! What should fans be expecting to see in the
When you’re not busy on set, what are you usually up to? I’m either baking, shopping, or doing something acting related like helping a friend prepare for an audition, self-taping, or acting class! Any special message for fans? Never give up on your dreams. Sounds cliché but seriously. Keep going. I literally went on 100 auditions before booking ONE. 1,000 failures equal one success.

With Shadowhunters wrapping up its final season, we couldn’t wait to talk to Jade about what’s to come! From behind-the-scenes moments to post-series ambitions, the multi-talented star is breaking it all down. Let’s talk Shadowhunters! What initially drew you to the show? When I realized the show was tied to The Mortal Instruments, I was instantly excited! I went deep into fan art, fan-fiction, everything I could find. When I started seeing the cast being announced on social media, I had a deep sense that these guys were going to become my friends. During that month, I auditioned five times. When I found out I got the role, I immediately made a fan a video to announce to fans that I was going to play Meliorn! A week later, I was on set shooting my first scene with Emeraude. By then, I had read the first two books and was hooked! What should viewers be expecting from these last final episodes? EPIC-NESS. The series is going to build to a great crescendo where all hell literally breaks loose. Alliances will be formed. The Seelies will be way more present. And a war is coming... Any memorable moments from filming the last season? So many good ones that we all laugh about when we see each other. We worked a lot of late nights and it’s always funny to start seeing people lose it a little and have the giggles kick in. I don’t want to say too much because it might reveal too much! What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned while on the Shadowhunters set? SO much. I learned that if I stick with what I believe in, things turn around for the better in the end. I learned that my life is beautiful. That I appreciate what I am able to do, and who I am doing it with. That I love these guys who were acting with me. That I have something very special going on here. And that the fandom are 100% with us along the entire process. Some of the best parts were doing
instagram-lives in our trailers and tease about what we are doing. Is there anybody that you wish you had more scenes with? By the end of the series, it was pretty wellrounded and satisfying for the level of interactions with each character. I wish I had spoken to Chai as Jordan Kyle. But sometimes Meliorn decides not to say anything to people, and just kind of stare... haha! Let’s talk music! You’re currently working on your debut EP; what kind of sound should fans be expecting to hear? I’m putting every breath of every day in this project. It’s definitely a pop EP/album. I have influences like tropical-house, hip-hop, trap, but all within the realm of pop. I’m creating a pop artist but we’ll see where it evolves. I’m inspired by many music and art cultures around the world. What inspired the EP’s title, Love Letters to a Fandom? It’s my way to thank the Shadowhunters and my Fandom for having changed my life in the way they have. For having embraced me as I am and supported my every move. I get to travel the world and meet all of them and we have a strong connection that goes way beyond the TV show. Now, we are going to have an eternal relationship in a whole new way. What’s on your bucket list for this year? Release my debut EP/album and make fun epic music videos for each song. I want to collaborate with the fans and create a new era in my life. I want to continue evolving as a human and be the most joyful I have ever been.

Let’s talk Just Add Magic! Take us back to the beginning; how did you know you wanted to be involved with this show? I originally tested for a different Amazon show and the producers pulled me aside and told me that there was another new show they thought I would be perfect for. I went straight to testing, which is the last step before you book a show. I mixed and matched with other Darbie’s and Kelly’s and I booked the role of Hannah that day.
