DANIEL GANDY WINS JOSEPH SUNDE MEMORIAL

St George Continental rider Daniel Gandy won the 2021 Joseph

Sunde Memorial in a hard fought sprint from in form Heffron spe-

cialist Jack Bennett. Defending champion Luke Cridland was third

with Heffron veterans, Paul Rowney and Liam Kelly completing the top 5.

Gandy at 20 years old becomes the youngest rider in the 26 year history of the race to win the event which honours the memory of 4yo Joseph Sunde who lost his battle to leukaemia in 1993.

Another stellar field with a mix of new and old faces with local ZCC squad doing their best to break things up from the gun. The south easterly wind at Heffron can sometimes have a settling effect and

it was obvious at the halfway point of the race a break was looking very unlikely.

At 5 laps to go a group which included Jesse Coyle, Jack Bennett,

Luke Cridland, Daniel Gandy looked threatening but a big effort by Michael Potter saw the end of that and it was the over to ZCC to control the finale for Bennett.

After a disappointing race last week Gandy knew what he had to do to claim the win and in end he executed it to perfection getting the jump on Bennett and holding him off to the line.

More importantly though the event once again proved the night

was all about family and Chris and Jacky Gandy were pretty proud parents to see their son claim one of Sydney most coveted prizes. Grant and Sandra Bennet have both had recent health challenges but have always been on the sidelines supporting their son Jack. The Cridland family have been part of Heffron folklore since the

beginning and Luke’s cheer squad cover 4 generations from his 90 yr old grandmother to his 1 yr old son Finn.

JOSH HEFFERNAN LEADS C GRADE HOME

The 13thAnthony Spurgeon (Snr) Memorial Handicap was in fine style by Josh Heffernan when he lead the remnants of C grade

home after holding off the chasing B grade bunch the entire race. Run over 15 laps on the same format as Tuesday Night Racing

both grades boasted even number of 35 riders each but it was C grade who set the pace from start with unusually high number of withdrawals before the race even reach half way.

It was no surprise as B grade were only able to claw back 2-3 secs a lap when it they needed to be gaining 10 secs a lap to catch C grade. The attrition up front continued and on the ‘real’ bell lap,

sorry Tom Gray, only 8 riders contested the sprint for the Spurge Trophy with Heffernan easily winning from newcomer Jonathon Emerick.

Nosh Mistry claimed third which was an emotional experience for

him as too has suffered the loss of a child with the anniversary just

recently – another example why the Memorial races are so special. Shout out to the 3 women who also finished the race with Nicole Oh winning the womens prize

B grade still had grade honours to claim and it was Chris Tune who managed to lead in a relatively intact B grade bunch. Last weeks B

grade King, Peter O’Connor was second and Dave Stewart Capped off yet another strong ride ride for third
