MICHAEL CUPITT WINS
SOLO WHILE ELINE SMIT AND HATTIE LOWDEN RULE C GRADE
ZCC strongman Michael Cupitt backed up his West Head Road
Race win on Sunday with a gutsy display of power riding to solo
home in Round 2 of the Sydney City Skoda Series. Joseph Sunde Memorial winner Daniel Gandy bested Series leader Jack Bennett home for second.
In an equally impressive display of riding Eline Smit claimed a top
15 overall to win C grade and take the C grade leader jersey, while women’s leader Hattie Lowden was 3rd in C grade to claim the women’s leaders jersey for a second week.
In B grade Chris Simpson caught the more fancied B grade sprinters napping to finish 6th overall. Peter O’Connor was hot on heels 2 spots back and now takes a 2pt lead in the B grade series.
With Road Nationals on this weekend entries were a little down but
the racing was as exciting and fast as ever with a stiff SE headwind down the straight keeping everyone honest.
As if by clockwork all 3 grades came together with 3 laps to go. Michael Cupitt was doing one of his usual monster turns leading into the straight with 2 laps to go and it only took a moment of indecision behind to gain a quick gap.
On the bell lap Cupitt’s advantage was hanging by a thread but with the Evans family train of Dave and Josh leading the chase it turned out Cupitt’s advantage was under no threat.
The A grade sprinters eventually took over with Gandy getting the advantage over Bennett for a second time while masters riders
Brad Mills and Paul Rowney were once again in the mix in the top 5. No change in the leaders jerseys apart from Eline Smit becoming the first female rider to wear a grade leaders jersey at Tuesday Night Racing.
