TOM BOLTON HOLDS OFF MARCUS CULEY TO CLAIM WEEK 3
Tom Bolton backed up his impressive win in Saturday’s U23 State
Crit Title at Heffron Park to narrowly edge Marcus Culey in a thrilling finale to week 3 of the Champ Sys summer criteriums.
Saturday’s Elite Crit Champ and winner of the opening 2 weeks Jack Bennett couldn’t complete the trifecta and had to settle for third. Leo Yip was in the mix again for fourth but perhaps the ride of the night
was Oliver Penny grabbing 5th overall and the overall B grade win. The other ride of the night came from Sydney 2000 Olympian Paul
Rowney who showed he hasn’t lost anything in his first race back at Heffron Park in well over 10 years.
There was a massive field of a record 160 starters on a sunny eve-
ning with relatively light NE winds and despite the larger than usual
numbers the first 10 laps were pretty smooth and exceptionally quick. The inevitable squeeze came when A grade had to get past 100 B
and C grade riders in the final 3 laps. Any fall is unpleasant and Shun Sugimara can thank himself lucky he’s only nursing a wrist fracture
after veering off the track with 2 laps to go. His bike wasn’t so lucky. Robbie Allen showed his class when he was 2nd B grade rider home with Luke Schofield in third.
Ben Glastonbury has wasted no time in mastering Tuesday Night racing and after being narrowly denied a C grade win last week
stormed home in 14th overall to win C grade and earn a start in B grade next week
Matt Curtin continues to impress with another podium in C grade
with Tony Graf, another Heffron Park rider from last decade claiming third.
Nicole Wilson backed up her great ride from last week with another
womens outright win from a strong field of 9 starters including Josie Talbot who won the Elite Crit Title on Saturday. Gina Ricardo was
2ndand Harriet Lowden was 3rd for her first podium of the season.
