JACK BENNETT STARTS NEW YEAR WITH A WIN IN ROUND 1

Jack Bennett picked up where he left off in 2020 and opened his

defense of Sydney City Skoda Summer Series Trophy with an em-

phatic win over Matt Dinham and Luke Cridland. Bennett is searching for the elusive three peat in the Summer Series which is now in its 36th year.

Sunny skies and Sydney’s notorious summer afternoon NE wind welcomed a bumper field of riders back to racing after a longer

than usual Xmas break of 4 weeks. It was clear everyone used the

break to improve their form and racing from all grades was on from the get go in the buffeting nor’ easterly.

A grade wrapped up B1 with 4 laps to go and then ripped through B grade in no time setting up the final 3 lap hunt for C grade who

were now down to 20 riders. Except of course for Josh Evans who set out on a gutsy 3 laps to go, do or die effort.

When he was caught Scott Law then launched a last lap solo move which looked dangerous but one suspects was a softener for his now official ZCC team and house mate Jack Bennett.

Edwin Britts is always the glue to bring it back together and this

provided the perfect platform for Bennett to time his sprint with only Dinham and Cridland staying with him. Brad Mills and Mick Cupitt fought it out for the points on offer to complete the top 5.

B grade was a close fought finish with Peter O’Connor just edging Ben Treble on the line in what was his best race and result for the

season. He will now be keen to defend his early lead in the Series to back up his Series wins from 2013 and 2015.

Pat Curtin was no surprise to win his last race in C Grade but the

real surprise was the incredible ride from Hattie Lowden who was just beaten to the line by Adam Hardtard who claimed 2nd. Hattie still walked away with 1st female on the night and although only

Gina Ricardo and Nicole Oh made up the women’s field, they all

finished which was impressive on a tough night when half the field didn’t.
