Round 3 – 5 February 2019 Liam Kelly has wound back the clock to claim an unbelievable win in Round 3
of the Summer Series against an elite field brimming with nationally ranked elite athletes. While the 53 yo Masters 7 category rider still manages to squeeze out the odd place in Tuesday night racing this win is his first sine March 2012.
The finish did somewhat play into his hands when a last lap attack by Luke Cridland, Jack Bennett and Tristan Ward split the field. Hesitation by Cridland before the straight prompted Bennett and Ward to also swing up which is when Kelly seized his chance to jump straight passed them
Incredibly he managed to hold the field off for the length of the straight to win by a bike length Bennett and Harrison Bailey. Brad Mills and Daniel Gandy got the remaining points of offer in the Summer Series
Jack Bennett is now equal first with Alex Nazarewicz on 10 pts will Liam Kelly has crept into contention just 1 point behind.
Once the surprise of Kelly’s win finally subsided it was a chance to celebrate a greats nights racing in very welcome balmy con-
ditions. Lap times were super fast with 29 strong A grade consistently producing 2m 40sec laps.
RESULTS
B grade were only 10sec+ slower but this wasn’t
1 Liam Kelly (Easts)
enough to prevent them getting caught with 3 laps to go. At 5 laps to go C grade almost looked to have a
chance with a solid 1m 30sec gap but this too evaporated as they were caught on the last lap.
Over 65 riders from the 85 starters were still in the
race on the last lap so the sprint for grade placings was on in earnest. George Bryan finally got his B
grade win and deserved promotion to A grade next week. Jean Paul Williams was right on his wheel
while with Peter O’Connor finally getting on the B grade pointsboard.
After some confusion at the end of the race the C
grade winner was finally identified as Lui Alavrez with James Roberts second and Martin Hector grabbing 3rd in his first race back since 2017.
No mistake for 1st women which was Brodie Chap-
man as she prepares for her return to the European season.
2 Jack Bennett (Randwick) 3 Harrison Bailey (Northern Sydney) 4 Bradley Mills (Parklife) 5 Daniel Gandy (St George) B Grade 1 George Bryan (Sydney Uni) 2 Jean-Paul Williams (Sydney Uni) 3 Peter G O’Connor (Easts) C Grade 1 Lui ARRIAGA ALVAREZ (Orange) 2 James Roberts (Rapha) 3 Martin HECTOR (Manly) Women 1 Brodie Chapman (Carneige) 2 Emma Coral Roberts (Sydney Uni)

THE KING of
HEFFRON rates the
FIRST PRINCE
and others...
R.E.T.I.R.E.M.E.N.T This is a word that I don’t care to bring up much, but I was cornered by a shell-shocked group of racers last week.
“King they asked. We have just been beaten by a geriatric. What should we do?” I had a chuckle out loud at this.
“Listen you group of snivelling posers, dead set you’ve just endured a 30 second cycling Master Class. Brains over Brawn 101. Geez.”
We discussed retirement and I told them “No, you still have a few good rides ahead of you. So do I, so does Liam”. (There was silence)
“If you want to win so bad take my advice:
“Nobody ever lost a race because they ate a steak”
“Social media. Wise up. Mostly it means nothing. ie Telling everyone what you just did. Then in a hour you do it again. Take a post from Liam or FFS that other old cat David Evans. They post crap, then everyone jumps on offended, agreeing, disagreeing etc etc.
Meanwhile Liam has a little snooze or goes for a training ride. He’s won the race before it’s even started.”
Why retire when you just keep winning???????????????????? “Drink beer” Yes. I ramble on and don’t make much sense. But hey I am The King!
