Round 6 – 26 February 2019 Series Leader Jack Bennett executed a perfectly timed sprint to pip Brad Mills
on the line, bag 7 points and catapult himself into a commanding 11 point lead in the 2019 Series.
With Tristan Ward now sorting out the Nations big issues in Canberra, the
closest contenders with 3 rounds left are Luke Cridland, Nick Spratt and Liam
Kelly. A reminder that next Tuesday 5 March will be the 2018 Trophy Race and 2019 Anthony Spurgeon Memorial handicap race.
Warm conditions and the familiar NE wind, although only gusting at a mild 40kph returned to welcome 75 riders on the start line with B grade the biggest. B1 once again faced the biggest battle and lacked the firepower to close down the last 10 sec gap to B grade before they were rounded by the A grade inside the 5 laps to go.
C grade were still in with a chance at this stage and nearly pulled it off with a last lap all or nothing move from Darren Byers at the bell, but A grade were too fast, too strong into the headwind and it was all lined up for another power sprint.
Weekly race commentator never gets it wrong, but even he didn’t pick Brad Mills who lead the sprint in the left
gutter the entire length of the straight. Millsy held Luke Cridland on his hip but just ran out of track to hold off Jack Bennett in the last 150m.
Popular win for Bennett who has notched up one of the most consistent list of finishes ever with only ONE race from 15 out of the top 5, including 6 second places!
Nash Kent, the Brad Mills lookalike finished fourth with Nick Spratt grabbing a valuable point for fifth spot.
16 yo Jamie Dunn was back racing and had rode a
smart race to position himself perfectly to claim B grade from Alan Bozunovic and Rodrigo Notaro who had another strong ride
Lui Arriaga apparently doesn’t do many turns but he
knows how to find the finish line and recorded his 2nd grade win which now gives him a 1pt lead in the C
grade series. Good rides from C grade old hands Andy Portess and David Gardner.
Great to see 4 female starters this week with the
decision coming down to a final lunge for the line won by Anna Booth just in front of Emma Roberts
