FREMONT UNION CITY - NEWARK
From the Editor...
FREMONT UNION CITY - NEWARK
Great diverse society pattern, culture and cuisines in Tri City – California ( Fremont, Union City & Newark ) were the main reasons to come up with an idea to publish “LifeStyle Fremont”. The full team of LifeStyle Fremont lives with the dream throughout the whole process to provide the interesting, knowledgeable and meaningful information about Fremont and our life with style. Based on the latest population census carried, the racial make-up of Fremont indicates that a little more than fifty percent of the population is of Asian extraction amounting to roughly 110, 000 individuals. Out of this group the largest single segment is of ethnic Indians who are estimated to be around 20,000. Other ethnic groups in the Asian segment are Chinese at 18% and Filipinos at 7%. Together these groups hold a substantial sway in transacting business in the Fremont area. There have been several publications in the past that brought out magazines and publications on the ethnic diversity of Fremont. Ethnic Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans and Bangladeshis have a unique culture that is now evident. Caucasian people have begun to appreciate the ethnic diversity of this group and many feel that they have a lot to offer in terms of culture and cuisine. Whereas forty years ago Asian food meant Chinese food, today Asian food encompasses mouth- watering delights like samosas, butter chicken, biryani and tandoori chicken. These are but a few of a vast array of culinary delicacies that emanate from South Asia. But the single most encouraging feature of today’s South Asian is that they adopt a blend of ways passed on to them from American society too. This makes for an amalgamation of cultures. It symbolizes the very concept of America. This is what American culture is all about; this is the “melting pot” that is often quoted. The people of Fremont, California have shown a great example to imbibe the good of other cultures. We have a young and dynamic population that is reaching out for the latest innovations in goods and services. We try our best to makes this publication of “Lifestyle Fremont” a knowledgeable storehouse of information about history of Fremont and a broad-based guide to goods and services offered by merchants and traders in Tri City. We have a young, dynamic, entrepreneurial population that is reaching out for the latest innovations in goods and services that makes the publication of “ Lifestyles” a veritable storehouse of information and a broad-based guide to goods and services offered by merchants and traders. This issue of “LifeStyle” reflects South Asian culture and its impact on businesses in the heart of California. We have endeavored to conceptualize this issue with diverse hues and scintillating graphics that will have our readers receptive. This issue has been the fruit borne out of the fertile imagination, hard work and application of our group who have teamed up with their innovative contributions. Once again, please accept our gratitude and appreciation for making this issue a success.

8 ways to stay fit for life 1. Eat the right type of food To be fit, you need to work out. To work out effectively, you need energy. And energy comes from food. Of course we all eat – sometimes too much – but usually a change in the output of energy (which occurs when we start working out), means we must counterbalance it by altering the amount of energy we put into our bodies – you need to put in as much energy as you use. “Depending on how much you are training, your energy intake may as much as double,”. For long-lasting fitness you need to make sure you are eating enough of the right type of foods. Carbs, for instance, are what enable you to burn fat. They are the primary source of energy and are what your body will feed on first when exercising. Without them, protein and good fats will be used, diverting them from their primary functions – building muscle and ensuring a healthy neurological system and central nervous system. 2. Exercise as much as possible When trying to achieve long- lasting fitness, the frequency at which you exercise is of utmost importance. “As a general rule, if you want to be ‘fit’, you need to be doing something physical at least six days a week. But that doesn’t mean you have to lift weights each day, or run every time.” To maintain a healthy fitness level, it is recommended that high-intensity workouts be broken up with light cardio, or ‘recovery’ activities. Take a dance class, go to Body Jam or try boxing. Break this up with a half-an-hour walk three times a week and a swim on the seventh day and your body will be fit but not overworked. “And because the effects of weight-training last roughly two weeks (whereas cardio lasts only three days), resistance training twice a week is plenty,”. 3. Stengthen your core The ‘core’ refers to the group of muscles that run the length of the torso and stabilise the spine, pelvis and shoulders – it consists of far more than just abdominals. These muscles are essential for standing upright and moving and are therefore vital to fitness training. The stronger they are, the easier any movement will be – and the better the results from cardio and resistance training. Yoga and Pilates are excellent activities to build core strength, as is Body Balance, swimming and dancing. “Body weight exercises are very effective in building a strong core and a set of situps, abdominal braces, plank exercises and lunges will do wonders. Try 50 repetitions of pelvic floor squeezes then holding a plank position for 60 seconds every day.” 4. Improve your flexibility It’s often overlooked, but it is of vital importance in maintaining fitness. Flexibility enables muscle growth, and supple limbs and helps your body to relax after a workout. Without it, muscles can become tight, strained or cramped and joints can be pulled out of alignment. Flexibility allows joints and muscles to move through their full range of motion, easing movement and increasing blood circulation. “The best way to increase flexibility is to stretch. Static stretching – i.e. isolating each muscle and holding a stretch for 30 seconds – is a great way to relax your body in the
evening and assist muscles in the recovery process.” Stretching before a workout will ensure the maximum benefit from exercising and keep your body in working order. It helps to release and loosen the muscle and works best when you relax and breathe with each stretch. 5. Get your heart rate pumping Cardio pertains to any form of activity that increases your heart rate. It trains your heart and lungs to pump oxygen around your body faster and more effectively. “There are two types of cardio workouts: Light and high intensity. Light cardio refers to exercise that increases your heart rate to 60 per cent of its maximum output – determined by finding 60 per cent of 220 (the average maximum heart rate) minus your age. It is effective in maintaining fitness. High intensity cardio refers to exercise that gets your heart going at least 80 per cent of its maximum output (80 per cent of 220 minus your age). It’s effective in burning fat and increasing your heart and lung capacity. Both forms of cardio should be included in any fitness plan, as should a challenge every now and then. With the right push at the 10

right time, what you once considered high intensity may soon become light cardio!” 6. Try weight training Long-term fitness requires strength. To maximise strength over time, weight (resistance) training is paramount. “Weight-training will not cause you to ‘bulk up,” Carver stresses. “Women lack the testosterone necessary for massive muscle growth – female body builders rely on supplements to achieve their bulk. Lifting weights can however, increase strength and bone density (vital in preventing osteoporosis) exponentially, on the outside it shows only as improved muscle tone. “This is best achieved through multiple repetitions of a medium weight.” But don’t restrict your resistance training to lifting weights – any activity that involves muscle use, such as ball sports, swimming and Pilates counts. “You are considered a healthy strength if you can lift your own body weight. Can you do a chin up?” 7. Exercise for fun If you don’t make exercise fun, you will get sick of it. Make it social, be imaginative and put some variety into your weekly routine. Try out all the group classes and see which ones you like. Or find a dance school for some high-intensity cardio. Yoga and Pilates are great for core strength and flexibility, but if you want to spice it up a little, try Bikram Yoga. Trade the weights machines for free weights and dumbbells or a Pump class instead. While it can be motivating to have the space of the gym to work out in, don’t restrict yourself! Join a team – be it basketball, netball, touch footy or volleyball. Each game goes for about 45 minutes, so that’s 45 minutes of cardio and muscle endurance. If personal pursuits are more your style, try swimming, rock climbing, surfing, rowing or bike riding. Leisure sports work more muscles than you might think! 8. Let your body recover Recovery time is essential. “If you don’t recover, you’ll over-train and probably injure yourself,”. It should consist of rest, stretching and light cardio such as yoga, swimming and walking. “Recovery time varies between individuals, depending on DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness).” DOMS occurs mostly because muscle cells are torn and need to rebuild. Each time it rebuilds, the muscle grow a little. The more energy you provide your body with at this time, the more efficiently this will happen. DOMS can last up to 72 hours after exercising and muscles should be rested for a further 24 hours after soreness subsides. “That doesn’t have to mean three days of inactivity, just change it up a little: If your arm muscles are sore, exercise your legs or vice versa. However, if you feel any sort of pain or discomfort it is best not to exercise that part of your body.”

Traditional Indian Jewellery Traditional Indian Jewellery is the long drawn saga of Indian Tradition that is so exquisitely brought out by the maintenance of the on going traditional strain. The Traditional Jewellery of India is of varied types and numerous forms. Meenakari Jewellery Meenakari Jewellery is the exuberant exemplification of Meenakari Art; an ancient form of art in India that has been praised since its introduction for the superb designs and combination of colours. From the prime age of this craft, the artisans were named as `meenakar` who were involved in creating different Meenakari items. In some work, the entire object, such as pendant, is covered with this exclusive technique. On a typical pair of `kara` bangles with three-dimensional `makara`, elephant, lion or bird head terminals, additionally decorated with diamonds, rubies, and emeralds, as they often were, is a dazzlingly opulent object that embodies a galaxy of goldsmith arts. Stone Jewellery Stone Jewellery is another form of jewelry that is studded with different gems and from times immemorial it has been a popular one in the domain of Indian Jewellery. Several reasons ranging from spiritual to aesthetic to health, has been a reason for the evolution and popularity of the gemstone jewelry which thrives to be an integral part of Indian Jewellery which has become the part of life of Indian women and men both. These stone jewelries are worn according to the individual`s astrological chart and ruling of planet. Traditional Indian Jewellery Gold Jewellery Gold Jewellery bears the testimony of rich Indian Tradi-
tion. Gold is one of the valued metals in all over the world and gold jewellery in India has occupied a major position for its antiquity of use and fame. Even gold is used as the base metal for creating different jewelleries since the ancient times as many evidences are found in Harappa and Mohenjodaro. Apart from these, Thousands of common, everyday appliances require `Gold` to ensure perfect performance over a long period of time. This indestructible metal is completely recyclable and virtually immune to the effects of air, water, and oxygen. Gold jewelleries have been in demand since the primordial age, when mankind learned to use the metal. The use of gold with gem and other stones was started before a thousand years and this past tradition has introduced the trend of using diamond in gold jewelleries and this is one of the most sought after combinations. Earlier kings and queens patronized the gold jewelleries most of which were elaborate gold jewelleries and crowns studded with diamonds. Even now Gold Jewellery is the name that counts when families think about marriage. Bead Jewellery Bead Jewellery or Bead art in India dates back to a history of five thousand year when Indus Valley Civilization had been the existing Civilization of India. The populace pertaining to that civilization manufactured beads out of gold, silver, copper, clay, ivory and even wood. Traditional Indian Jewellery As the Mughal reigned and gave enough patronage to the bead jewelry they were in vogue. Bead necklaces of different size and shapes, made up of precious and semi-precious stones, were quite popular during that time. With the passage of time as Europeans arrived in India, the bead work became more obvious and semi-transparent. Europeans looked for better and refined as well as transparent bead work, which enabled the artisans to develop their art up to the optimum. This led to widening of the horizon of bead jewelry making. Nose rings are an essential part of an Indian woman`s daily life adornment that is usually worn in almost all the regions of India. In some part of the sub-continent the nose rings are traditionally indispensable. Hence during and after marriages these small pieces of jewelleries are essentially worn. Nose rings in India are available in both gold and silver. With passing time, however, new metals have evolved, such as, white gold and others. With the advent of the fashion jewelleries the women had a wide variety of designs to choose from. harmful to the husbands. In the contemporary times, however, nose rings are worn both by Hindu and Muslim women. Types of Nose Rings The nose rings those are worn in the nostril that is the stud rings are very easy to use. If the nose rings are to be worn in septum, a circular barbell is worn and in case the ring is to be worn at the bridge of the nose between the eyes, the nose is decked by a straight barbell. On some occasions the septum rings are so large that a portion of the mouth is covered. As they cover the mouth, the nose ring comes in the way while eating. The nostril ring also draws in the attention. They are sometimes to a great extent decorated with pearls and precious or semiprecious stones. Due to this heavy ornamentation the nostril rings are to be supported by fine chains. This fine chain is attached to the hair. Such ornaments are quite popular during Indian weddings. The names of the nose rings vary from region to region. In South India it is popular as `Mookkutthi.` Bigger nose rings are used in provinces, such as, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab. In modern India, however, the nose rings have evolved as a style statement. So both married and unmarried women are in favour of using nose rings in India.

The modern city of Fremont has been built on beautiful land with a long, interesting history. This rich, historical heritage fits readily into time periods that had their own specific influences on the history of Fremont. he Ohlone People Ancestors of the Ohlone people wandered into this land of great abundance several thousand years ago. They lived a simple life in harmony with nature and the land. They followed the cycles of the seasons as they hunted, fished, and gathered their food. They burned certain areas to encourage the growth of favored plants and

improve grazing areas for animals that they hunted. The Ohlones gathered a variety of plants, seeds, berries, roots, and nuts for food. They ground and leached acorns and made mush or bread. They caught rabbits, squirrels, birds, fish, and other small animals and gathered shellfish from the bay. Hunters stalked larger animals such as deer and antelope. Permanent villages were located on higher ground near marshes, streams, or springs where drinking water was available. They built domed huts with a frame of poles thatched with grass
or tules. They crafted baskets, clothes, decorations, tools, nets, beads, and weapons. They navigated the bay in remarkable reed boats and traded materials or products with other tribes. Religion and ceremony were important in daily life activities, and special rituals were observed at important events such as birth, puberty, and death. The Ohlones maintained their culture by passing on stories, songs, dances, and tribal laws from parents to children. The Ohlone way of life minimized warfare and ensured the health of the land. Life was ordered and in tune with nature and the will of the creator.

Newark became famous for the Carter rail cars manufactured there. The railroads moved freight faster than was possible by wagon or ship. Ship landings disappeared and wagons carried freight to nearby rail stations. People were now able to commute to work in Oakland or San Francisco. Each town had its own stores, churches, schools, halls, post offices, and organizations. Each enjoyed periods of growth and suffered through floods, fires, and depressions. History of Fremont
1929 threw the nation into a depression. Prices dropped, business slowed, unemployed workers went on relief, and farmers could not afford to sell their crops. The approach of World War II ended the depression and brought back development and economic prosperity. Pearl Harbor changed everything for everybody. Many young men and women scattered around the world to fight the war. People of all ages worked in defense industries or on the farms. Life in Washington Township was filled with blackouts, Red Cross and defense programs, bond and scrap drives, price ceilings, restrictions, shortages, rationing, air raid signals, enlistments, draft calls, separations, and sad telegrams. All Japanese Americans were evacuated from the Township in May 1942. All development that was not part of the war effort was postponed.
P
ost War Era 1945 - 1996 Washington Township remained a peaceful paradise, unchanged by the dramatic postwar boom that transformed California into an industrial giant. Dairies, apricot orchards, and fields covered the land around the eight communities with a combined population of 25,000. There were three flood zones, eight fire districts, four sanitary districts, nine school districts, and Washington Township Hospital District, but basic government was controlled by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors in Oakland. The most amazing local events were associated with the growth of the area. Housing tracts were appearing in orchards and fields. Residents realized that growth was inevitable, but they were concerned that uncontrolled development would destroy their way of life. They did not want to be annexed by powerful neighbors. They wanted control and made some efforts to create one large city out of Washington Township. Local chambers discussed problems of development, zoning, and incorporation. The central areas of Newark, Irvington, and Decoto received precise zoning by the county. The Washington Township Chamber of Commerce formed a committee to study incorporation. These studies led to the incorporation of Newark as a separate city in 1955. The towns of Niles, Mission San Jose, Centerville, Irvington, and Warm Springs were incorporated into the City of Fremont in 1956. Some 22,000 people lived between Mission Peak and the bay. The size of the area and the melding of five towns into one city presented special problems. Planners located industry in the southern part and commercial development near the center. Conflicting factions sometimes polarized the city, especially during the campaign to locate city hall and establish a city center. The opening of the Hub in 1962 was the first step in the development of the Central Business District. The General Motors plant opened in 1963. Other development included three airports in Fremont; the Centerville Airport (1946-mid1960s), Skyways (glider) Airport (1961-1988) and the Fremont Airport (1965-1988). The City of Fremont has gradually developed civic facilities and parks. Central Park was opened in 1962, the City Government Building in 1963, Lake Elizabeth in 1969, the Library Building in 1989 and the Police Building in 1996. Courtesy: Museum of Local History, Fremont

Life Insurance
P
ermanent insurance-also known as cash value life insurance offers a lifetime of death benefit protection, in addition to a number of advantages, many of which are unique to life insurance. Here’s an overview of what permanent life insurance is, and why you should consider it.
Term vs. permanent - Renting vs. owning The easiest way to understand the difference between term and permanent insurance is to use the analogy of owning versus renting a home. Purchasing term insurance is often compared to renting a house. When you rent, you get the full and immediate use of the house and all that goes with it, but only for as long as you continue paying rent, As soon as your continue paying rent, As soon as your lease expires , you must leave. Likewise, term life insurance provides a death benefit only for specific length of time. When the term coverage expires, so does your protection. Also, if you stop paying premiums, the coverage ends. When you own a permanent policy, your benefit stays in force, as long as you pay the premiums, your income for your family when you’re young, but later in life it can provide protection for surviving spouse facing reduced Social Security benefits, or possibly the end of pension income. Additionally, you can use the cash value in the permanent policy to supplement your own retirement income, when your death benefit needs are reduced.
A lifetime of Death Benefit Protection The primary purpose of permanent life insurance is to ensure your family is financially protected in the event of your death. No matter when they need it, your beneficiaries will receive a death benefit as long as you premiums are paid and the policy remains in effect Plus, the insurance benefits from a permanent life policy are distributed to the beneficiaries generally income tax-free. With permanent life insurance, you pay more initially so you can pay less eventually, and the policy is more likely to be in force when your family needs it most.
The ‘Living benefits” of Permanent Insurance The cash value accumulation of permanent insurance is commonly referred to as a “living benefit” of owning permanent insurance-it is benefit you can enjoy during your lifetime. This cash value can be borrowed against generally tax-free can be used

for virtually anything from finding a child’s college education to supplementing your retirement income. This can be particularly useful in retirement income. This can be particularly useful in retirement when typically your need for the full death benefit declines. If you’re a business owner, the cash value of permanent life insurance can be borrowed against to ensure the continuation of the business you’re worked hard to build.

Besides its lifetime death benefit feature, permanent life insurance can also personal “safety ”and against life’s uncertainties.
The Cost of Waiting When it comes to purchasing a permanent insurance policy, there is a cost to waiting Life insurance premium rates are based in part on age, which means any new coverage will cost more the longer you wait. That’s why it is wise to put a permanent policy in place early to lock in your insurability at a cost-effective rate. 12 Indian foods that cut fat
12 Indian foods that cut fat You don’t have to acquire a taste for olive oil, seaweed or soya to maintain a low-fat, healthy diet. Indian cuisine can be healthy too, if it’s cooked with oil and ingredients that take care of your heart and health.
Ayurveda suggests you include all tastes — sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent — in at least one meal each day, to help balance unnatural cravings. Here are 12 foods that can help you lose weight and gain health: Turmeric : Curcumin, the active component of turmeric, is an object of research owing to its properties that suggest they may help to turn off certain genes that cause scarring and enlargement of the heart. Regular intake may help reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol and high blood pressure, increase blood circulation and prevent blood clotting, helping to prevent heart attack. Cardamom : This is a thermogenic herb that increases metabolism and helps burn body fat. Cardamom is considered one of the best digestive aids and is believed to soothe the digestive system and help the body process other foods more efficiently. Chillies : Foods containing chillies are said to be as foods that burn fat. Chillies contain capsaicin that helps in increasing the metabolism. Capsaicin is a thermogenic food, so it causes the body to burn calories for 20 minutes after you eat the chillies. Curry leaves : Incorporating curry leaves into your daily diet can help you lose weight. These leaves flush out fat and toxins, reducing fat deposits that are stored in the body, as well as reducing bad cholesterol levels. If you are overweight, incorporate eight to 10 curry leaves into your diet daily. Chop them finely and mix them into a drink, or sprinkle them over a meal. Garlic : An effective fat-burning food, 38

garlic contains the sulphur compound allicin which has anti-bacterial effects and helps reduce cholesterol and unhealthy fats.
Mustard oil : This has low saturated fat compared to other cooking oils. It has fatty acid, oleic acid, erucic acid and linoleic acid. It contains antioxidants, essential vitamins and reduces cholesterol, which is good for the heart.
Cabbage : Raw or cooked cabbage inhibits the conversion of sugar and other carbohydrates into fat. Hence, it is of great value in weight reduction. Moong dal : The bean sprouts are rich in Vitamin A, B, C and E and many minerals, such as calcium, iron and potassium. It is recommended as a food replacement in many slimming programmes, as it has a very low fat content. It is a rich source of protein and fibre, which helps lower blood cholesterol level. The high fibre content yields complex carbohydrates, which aid digestion, are effective in stabilising blood sugar and prevent its rapid rise after meal consumption. Honey : It is a home remedy for obesity. It mobilises the extra fat deposits in the body allowing it to be utilised as energy for normal functions. One should start with about 10 grams or a tablespoon, taken with hot water early in the morning. Buttermilk : It is the somewhat sour, residual fluid that is left after butter is churned. The probiotic food contains just 2.2 grams of fat and about 99 calories, as compared to whole milk that contains 8.9 grams fat and 157 calories. Regular intake provides the body with all essential nutrients and does not add fats and calories to the body. It is thus helpful in weight loss. Millets : Fibre-rich foods such as millets - jowar, bajra, ragi, etc - absorb cholesterol and help increase the secretion of the bile that emulsifies fats. Cinnamon and cloves: Used extensively in Indian cooking, the spices have been found to improve the function of insulin and to lower glucose, total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides in people with type 2 diabetes.

The land was owned by Jack Stevenson with the airfield having a 20 year lease. The original lease covered 71 acres of land, but the airfield was eventually expanded to 100 acres. Assisting Don Hubbard in managing
the field was Fred Gillman. The board of directors consisted of 10 East Bay businessmen. Bob Stevenson was the resident flying instructor and in charge of the flying school that would take up residence at the airfield. By 1947, Don Hubbard was filling the position of field superintendent and Charles Osborn was the field manager. Sears was a airplane model enthusiast and head of the Modelairs Flying Club. The other students were; Joe A. Lewis, Niles; W. F. Humpert, Irvington; D. D. Dias, Newark; Niels C. Nielsen, Niles; Alex DeKnoop, Newark; J. D. Andrade, Decoto; L. J. Amaral, Irvington; and G. A. Schrader, Hayward. The school included ground school and flying lessons. The students had to complete the following
hours in each area of study; Civil Air Regulations, 12.5 hours; navigation, 17.5 hours; weather, 17.5 hours; aircraft service, 7.5 hours; and radio, 5 hours. The ground school classes were conducted in classrooms built just for this school by Edward Rodrigues and Charles Osborn. In charge of the school was Edward Rodriguez and James H. While the first class of students were training and the third class was just starting, a number of improvements were made to Center Field. Lights were installed at the field for night operations, costing $2,000. Two new Luscombe trainers were purchased and added to the existing two planes that the students were using. A
hanger was built to house the Keyes and Marston aircraft maintenance company, previously of San Leandro. Keyes and Marston converted military C-47’s into DC-3’s for commercial use and converted Taylorcraft gliders into powered airplanes. The third class of veteran students consisted of the following: John

Upon discharge from the Army he was a flight instructor in Dayton, Ohio and at Ried Hillview Airport in San Jose, and also began his flight training in 1942, but with the Western Training Command. After graduating from pilot training he was assigned to a P-38 squadron and flew in the European Theater. His flying earned him the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters. The six students that completed the training were; Sears, DeKnoop, Lewis, Ameral, Andrade, and Nielsen. By the time the first class had graduated, the fourth class of students was starting. A number of the veteran students would go on to found the Center Field Pilots, Inc, a social organization for pilots, headed by T. C. Wilson, of Niles. The organization was comprised of 31 Washington township pilots. Also in 1947, a Stinson Monoplane, NC97852, owned by Harry Bachstein, President of Aviation Center, Inc. was stolen from Center Field. The thief left behind a 1947 automobile with only 67 miles on it. It was assumed that the car was stolen from a car dealership. After the plane was

broken into, it was rolled to a gas pump and filled with 11 gallons of gas. The plane departed sometime around 2 a.m. Don Hubbard lived near the field and reported hearing a plane take off at that time. The airport manager, Charles Osborn, noticed the broken gas pump at 8 am. then noticed that the plane was not in its hanger. The plane was capable of five hours of flight, so notices were sent to Oregon and Nevada to be on the lookout for the plane. Just days later the airplane was found in a hayfield, three miles from Hamilton Field, in Marin County. The plane was sighted from the air, by Harry O. Tollefson, of the Marion County Sheriff’s Air Patrol. The plane was parked next to a haystack that shielded it from being seen from the road. The plane had minor damage; a broken door lock and a bent wheel fender. It was later discovered that the car left at Center Field was stolen from a dealership in Oak-

W. “Wally” Ebright has leased Center Field and would be taking over as the manager and operator. At the time, the field had a restaurant, hangers, tie-downs, and a repair service. In January 1951, Civil Air Patrol units started using Center Field for training. The Fourth Group, commanded by Major Walter I. Imbrulia, was given use of the field by Wally Ebright. The following units were training at the field; Berkeley flight, Oakland squadron, Alameda squadron, Hayward squadron, and Diablo flight. Airports in Fremont
and other normal operating tasks. The first unit to train on the field was the Berkeley flight, under the command of Lt. William M. Dillon, with 85 members turning out for training. In 1956, Centerville would become part of the city of Fremont. The Centerville airport would change it’s name to Fremont Airport. In the late 1950’s, Center Field ceased all operations. John Stevenson, then mayor of Fremont and owner of the land on which the Field sits, decided to build homes in the area around the field. FHA financing does not allow homes to be built withing 2,000 from an airport, so Stevenson decided to close the airport. Airport manager Bill Geary was notified by Stevenson of the end of the lease. Geary left for a new position in Oregon, so Bill Starr, a local pilot, took over management of the field for the last month of its operation. In the early 1960’s the land used by the airport was developed in a shopping center and homes along Blacow Rd. For the gliders, the end was not far away. The lease, held by airport owner Bret Willat, expired in March 1989. At the time, sites near Sunol, the Fremont hills and Santa Clara were considered for the glider operations, but no sites were found and all sail plane operations in Alameda County came to an end. For Emil Kissel, the closing is the end of an era. Kissel, a glider pilot for 50 years, has been flying at the airport

since it opened.
Fremont Airport After the Centerville Airport closed, there was much discussion about opening a new airport. For Fremont, the airport would provide businesses in the area with access to corporate chartered flights, and making Fremont more attractive to newer businesses. In the summer of 1965 a new airport was built in Fremont. This airport was built on some low lying land at the very end of Fremont, right on the border of Santa Clara County. The airport was owned by A1 Smith and managed by Bill Visali and Shirley Vergeer, who are also doing business as Montag Flying School. The flight instructor for the school was A. W. Cramer, a Navy Reserve pilot. The flying school had 6 airplanes; a Twin Apache, Cessna 150, Cessna 140, Cessna Cherokee, Aronca, and a Bonanza. The runway was 2,700 feet long and the owners had plans to expand it to 3,000 feet in the 1967 time frame. There were also plans to add hangers and a terminal building. Fuel service at the field was done by Mobile Oil Co. The airport covered 44 acres, but had room to expand to 88 acres. In 1988, the owners of the land on which the Fremont Airport sat, King & Lyons, decided to redevelop the area for commercial use. The operator of the airport, Ron Rice, gave notice that they had to leave by May 1st. On April
20, a “last hurrah” was given at the airport. One of the events was a “bombing” contest with flour filled cups being dropped on a target. In symbolic protest, thirteen planes flew over Fremont City Hall. Later a barbecue was held. Tom Dean and Mike Stupey worked the gas pumps to give the planes one last fill up, before closing the pumps for good. Ralph Huy, the former operator of the airports flight school said that the closure is breaking up a large family. The airport supported a community of about 150 plane owners. Planes from the Fremont Airport were moved to other regional airports, such as Hayward, Livermore, Oakland and Sonoma. Some pilots sold their plane instead of moving it to another airport. When interviewed at the “last hurrah”, Pilot Jeff Green said that he will be moving his plane to Sonoma and considering if he should stay in Fremont or move closer to his airplane. Norm and Nancy West will have to move their airplane repair service to Sonoma airport. Nancy was not happy about the airport closing as they had just started the business and now they have to deal with the costs of moving the business. May 1st was the last day that the airport was open. As the day ended, large yellow X’s were painted on both ends of the runway letting pilots know that the run was is officially closed. The phrase “farewell friends” was also pointed on the runway.
Scientists in France have reported that pouring bubbly in an angled, downthe-side way is best for preserving the taste and fizz of the champagne. The study also reports the first scientific evidence confirming the importance of chilling champagne before serving to enhance its taste, the scientists say. Gerard Liger-Belair and colleagues note that tiny bubbles are the essence of fine champagnes and sparkling wines. Past studies indicate that the bubbles — formed during the release of large amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide gas — help transfer the taste, aroma, and mouth-feel of champagne.
The scientists studied carbon dioxide loss in champagne using two different pouring methods. One involved pouring champagne straight down the middle of a glass. The other involved pouring champagne down the side of an angled glass. They found that pouring champagne down the side preserved up to twice as much carbon dioxide in champagne than pouring down the middle — probably because the angled method was gentler. They also showed that cooler champagne temperatures (ideally, 39 degrees Fahrenheit) help reduce carbon dioxide loss. Their report appears in ACS’ bi-weekly Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry .

for over thirty years, from the far reaches of the Sahara desert to right here at home, where he served as Public Health commissioner of Alameda County for nearly a decade. His valuable contributions and unique accomplishments in healthcare brought him to the attention of the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO), who awarded him the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor for his dedication and leadership in the field. Dr. Eapen accepted that prestigious honor in 2007, joining such elite company as former Presidents Bill Clinton and Gerald Ford, Frank Sinatra, Martin Scorsese, and Muhammad Ali. Despite this level of stature, Dr. Eapen has remained dedicated to his work. A valuable member of the medical community here in the state, he’s served as a member of the Board of Association of California Health Care Districts (ACHD) and also as a member of the California
But Dr. Eapen is not sanguine about how smoothly these positive changes may come about. “I’ve spoken to a lot of people in the field about this,” he continues, after some consideration, “and I know there is uncertainty about how it will all work to truly benefit people. You know, when change happens, it is not always easy. But I know my concerns are shared by many other physicians and healthcare officials in the state, and I have confidence in them to create a solid, responsible plan that will truly benefit people.” Dr. Eapen’s concern for doing what is best for those in need no doubt stems from his lifelong commitment to public health. His dedication to public health issues led him to serve currently as an elected Board of Trustee member in a local community hospital – Washington District - in Fremont. His election eight years ago, in fact, marked one of the first times an Indo American had ever won a general election in Northern California. Dr. Eapen is currently the Medial Director of the Newark wellness center (part of the Alameda health system), and he still works as pediatrician in the local county public health system, giving him a clear window into the real issues facing the underinsured and uninsured. He’s taken what he’s learned all the way to local Senators and Congressman, speaking on several issues, especially childhood immunizations and school-based health clinics.

With that amazing background, it’s impossible not ask his opinion on the coming changes in US—and California—healthcare. “Of Photo Courtesy: www.prweb.com course, I’m excited to see the potential these changes have,” Dr. Eapen begins, becoming instantly animated by the subject. “My experis the state of California begins plan- ences in Africa and the Philippines gave me ning the processes and programs a great appreciation for the diverse needs necessary to support the federal we must meet in serving public health. “I started my work at Trivandrum Medical College in India, then went and practiced pediatrics in Tanzania and Nigeria—that gave me a much broader perspective on healthcare,” explains Dr. Eapen. “I later graduated from Berkeley, did a residency at Stanford, I began serving on boards and seeing how US medicine works. But I’ve never forgotten what it feels like to see children suffer from diseases brought on by malnutrition. There’s so much we can do to help solve problems.” And Dr. Eapen has certainly done all he can. Apart from the countless patients he’s helped over the years, Dr. Eapen was Health Advisor to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), where he oversaw efforts to remedy the health care issues of more than 50,000 refugees throughout the world at a camp set

up by the U.N. It’s no exaggeration to say that many of those refugees would have perished had it not been for his help. Even without the might of the U.N. behind him, though, Dr. Eapen has made significant positive changes in various regions of the world. During his time in Tanzania, he introduced immunization camps throughout the country, and while in Nigeria, he developed
massive anti-meningitis vaccine campaigns that reached thousands in sub Sahara. All of that, of course, brings us back to California, where Dr. Eapen had resided with his family in Fremont for about 28 years. His wife Shirley is a biotech professional, while his son Naveen whi was born in Tanzania is a doctor currently working in administration, and his daughter Sandhya is a third-year medical student at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. It’s hard not to wonder if his children’s motivation to become doctors stemmed from seeing all the good their father has done throughout the world. 56

Recently Dr.Eapen was elected to the University of California,Berkeley School of Public Health Advisory Board. He is also profiled as a model and mentor by Stanford University school of medicine. As recognition of all that good work, in recent years, Dr. Eapen became the first recipient of the California Medical Board’s Physician Recognition award. The award is specifically re-
served for those physicians that have made the most difference with their contributions and service. His is truly a life spent serving those in need. “I’ve been very fortunate to have the skills to help people,” he explains modestly. “It’s made my work very fulfilling. I know there is so much good we can do—I don’t just mean as a doctor, but all of us— as people.”
