t’s amazing the little things I can think of to annoy Mrs W. Since the 22nd of June I’ve been telling her daily that the nights are starting to draw in and we need to prepare for winter. She seems to think this is unnecessary and potentially even unhelpful. I disagree. I tell her that it’s a good job that we’re all different, otherwise life would be boring. She kindly replied that if ‘different’ is a synonym for me being an ‘annoying ugly xxxxxxx git’, then she was in total agreement. Potty mouth that one… Anyway, how are you all doing? Keeping well and bearing up in the heat I hope. Still, we mustn't grumble I suppose. We will though because most of us reading this are British and the weather is what we grumble about. So, without further ado, reference to the farcical comedy that is the UK government, the fact that Cliff Richard sang (again!) at Wimbledon or so much as a nod to the weather, let’s crack on shall we? It must be down to the summer heat, so maybe I can let it slide, but please remember that Freeview is NOT the same as Freesat. Please do NOT buy a Freeview box for the reception of UK TV via satellite. It just won’t work. It still happens. The poor item descriptions on the likes of Amazon don’t help however. So, if you’re not sure, please drop me a line before ordering. I’m happy to see if it’s suitable for your needs.

by Stuart Wallace

If you have purchased a new Freesat+ receiver (the recording one), please be aware that you don’t need to have a ‘wideband’ LNB fitted to your satellite dish. It’ll work perfectly well from a standard twin or quad output LNB. The only slight drawback is that you can record fewer channels at the same time, but how much Murder She Wrote or Vera can you really watch? If you find that the connector on your digibox has gone rusty, then the chances are that you have cracks in your satellite cable from the dish. When the cable gets very old and brittle, water can get inside the outer layer and find its way down the cable. Last stop is where it connects onto the digibox. As always, please feel free to get in touch if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your requirements. Contact details can be found on the advert. Have a great month. By the way, I’m 50 this month!!! I know, me neither… SvTRÉFÉvRH}ÉSÉoo]ÉTV RÉoo]ÉPu]oX}u ORÉ}v]o É ]vR]É]vRÉB]o]vP RÉv}}vÉ}v}(RÉuP]vÉ

For those of you with a TNTSAT receiver, should you be interested, you can also receive all the other free TV and radio channels from the Astra 1 (19.2°E) satellite. You’ll need to go into the menus and do a full search but in addition to the French channels, you’ll find a whole bunch of other European language stuff. Some good, some bad, and some, er, interesting (if you know what I mean). Viewer beware. Talking of TNTSAT, I have been told, but have not verified, that for those that have lost their Orange TV service by satellite, Orange are currently offering a free TNTSAT box as a replacement. This works from the same satellite meaning that you’ll not need to adjust your satellite dish. I don’t work for them, but the Starlink satellite internet system really is superb. Mega fast speeds and relatively easy to install. Expensive but worth it when compared to Neosat. Cool looking WiFi box as well. I’m hearing more and more stories of people with Tooway satellite internet that no longer have any sort of service and cannot get any help from the supplier. This is unlikely to change I’m afraid. Since they stopped taking on any new customers in the summer of 2020, customer service has been dropped faster than my trousers around Charlize Theron. So, essentially, your two choices for satellite internet are Neosat from Nordnet (Orange) or Starlink. The former is far cheaper and offers an adequate service, the latter is very expensive but very fast.

The Vineyard Guys

Is it me or is it HOT! by R}B]u.ÉovSÉÉMMR}v

J

uly has been a funny month with a very wet start followed by plenty of heat, for me personally too much heat, but the vines seemed happy and the couple of thundery nights with a little rain to dampen everything down, no complaints here. Our commiserations go out to those areas that experienced the hail that caused so much damage that we were lucky to avoid. As we move into August the heat continues, not that I’m complaining (well actually I am because getting up to start work at 6am to avoid the heat is not good for me). It feels better after a glass or two in the evening, because you do have to be sociable don't you. There are also the “Marche Gourmandes”, attendance at which is of course compulsory, and on top of that the wine tasting events that we get involved with that extend into the night…… are you starting to feel sorry for us yet? As you may have now gathered, it is a hard life for a vigneron. It is not all wine drinking, entertaining, partying

14 | The Deux-Sèvres Monthly, August 2022

all the time, life in the vines it is hard work, the hardest part is making it look easy. We have been giving tours and tastings almost daily throughout the past few months and are always pleased when people talk about how they, for the first time, see every part of how much goes into making a bottle of artisan wine and that we still, even though we are old and worn out, manage to talk about our property and the wine with true enthusiasm and passion. As difficult as the physical side is, especially with the heat that I just must mention again, you need to have your heart in it if you want to produce the best you can make. That is why, with a genuine enthusiasm, we carry on working the land and welcoming guests and visitors alike. With August here comes the anticipation of September's harvest. Will we have enough sun to give us the sugars we need to turn into alcohol? Will we have enough rain to make the grapes plump and full of quality juice? As the month progresses the grapes are now truly changing

work in the sunshine means the farmers tan is now well and truly set for the rest of the year and when the shirt comes off it looks like I am wearing a white T-Shirt so basically, the shirt does not come off and the illusion of a healthy all over tan is not spoilt. You Can’t Drink Red Wine in The Summer!

rapes

g plump

Red wines do often get left on the shelf at this time of year, the soaring temperatures mean the whites and especially the rosés are the wines of choice or in this part of France a rather peachy mix of rosé that is not on my shopping list and should be banned because of the sugar content alone, other fruit versions are slightly more palatable, like the pink grapefruit, but in all honesty you can’t beat a good rosé on a summers day. So what about these forgotten reds? Should they be banned from the table until the days cool?

colour, by the end they will be completely dark purple and almost good enough to eat/drink. The physical work in the vineyard does ease off a little except for walking every row and removing leaves, by hand, that cover the grapes. This helps the air flow and allows the sunshine in as at this time of year humidity is our enemy and we wouldn’t want to let all our hard work be spoilt by too much moisture. I do like the fact that working out in the vines brings us in touch with nature and I like to think, as we continue our journey towards Organic/Bio certification, that we respect it more than ever and want to nourish and protect it. I do wish someone would tell the bugs that bite us that we are trying to create a better environment and we are not part of the menu - they do seem to be out in force this season. All this

tinue ...

rs con the tou

No of course not, if you store and serve your red at the right temperature there is a place for a good red whatever the time of year. We talked about temperatures and storage last month and that serving temperature of 17-18 degrees means that when the temperature outside is 30 degrees plus, a red wine can be very refreshing. We are not talking about those very big, heavy wines but the lighter, easy drinking, more social reds like ours sit perfectly with a meal on a summers evening and can easily continue to be drank after too. So I dare you to go out and experiment, break a habit or two and become a little more adventurous with your wine. Put frozen fruit in your white or rosé to help keep it cool, NOT ICE CUBES. Go for a nice light red for a change or start off your evening or summer soirée with an easy summer champagne cocktail. We hope you enjoy a glass or two this August and soak up the sun and fun on offer and we hope to see you at the vineyard soon, until next time, Sante!

Delicious Triple Chocolate Cookies that everyone will LOVE

Ingredients 125 g Unsalted Butter 100 g Light Brown Sugar 75 g White Granulated Sugar 1 Large Egg 1 tsp Vanilla 250 g Plain Flour 35 g Cocoa Powder 1 + 1/2 tsp Baking Powder 1/2 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda 1/2 tsp Sea Salt 100 g White Chocolate Chips (or chopped chocolate) 100 g Milk Chocolate Chips (or chopped chocolate) 100 g Dark Chocolate Chips (or chopped chocolate)

Instructions Add butter and sugars to a bowl and beat till creamy – Add in the egg and the vanilla and beat again. Add in the plain flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, and salt and beat till a cookie dough is formed! Add in your Chocolate Chips and beat till they're distributed well! Weigh your cookies out into eight cookie dough balls they're about 115-120g each! Once they're rolled into balls, put your cookie dough in the freezer for at least 30 minutes, or in the fridge for an hour or so! Whilst the cookie dough is chilling, preheat your oven to 180C Fan, or 200C regular! Take your cookies out of the freezer/fridge and put onto a lined baking tray. Bake the cookies in the oven for 12-14 minutes. I don't personally flatten the cookies, as they flatten enough during baking. Once baked, leave them to cool on the tray for at least 30 minutes, as they will continue to bake whilst cooling! Enjoy

HOW TO ...

An occasional series of useful tips & tricks

Keep bananas longer

Bananas are notorious for causing other fruits to over-ripen quickly, so keep them separate. Bananas release ethylene gas which speeds ripening. Dividing the bunch into individual bananas will slow this release and therefore slow the ripening. Wrapping the stems in cling film will also help as this is the part of the banana from which most ethylene is lost. Keeping them in the dark will slow ripening further. Once your bananas are ripe (but not before), pop them into the fridge - the skins will go black quicker BUT the insides will remain fine for longer.

Later appearances of the Sibyls ˙H}`NÉÉ

made any event seem to be predicted by them because there was no identification by means of time or names. Obscure language made a particular verse applicable to multiple events depending on the context. Cicero, however, did not deign to use the prophesies to reinforce his political aims of restoring a king to the throne of Rome, and this bad habit of self-interested interpretation of the prophesies continued under the Empire and into the Christian era.

his article is a continuation of my exploration of images of the Sibyls in French churches which can be found in DSM issues April and June 2022. The Roman Sibyls The ancient Greek (and Middle Eastern) prophets were women – virgins, in fact, like all female prophetesses are traditionally – and they were credited with the gift of being able to predict future events. Their sayings, or oracles, were written down and collected into what are known as the sibylline books. The early Latins adopted this veneration for the prophesies, and new Sibyls were attributed to locations in Roman Italy. There is a Latin legend dating from the V Century BCE about an old woman who came to Lucius Tarquinius Superbus (known in English as Tarquin), the last king of the Roman kingdom, offering him nine books of sibylline prophesies for a sum that was so high that he refused the offer, whereupon the woman burnt three of the volumes and then offered the remaining six for the same price. This, too, he refused, and the woman proceeded to burn a further three volumes and offered the remaining three for, yet again, the same price. King Tarquin was so overwhelmed by this that he accepted the final offer, and thus these three volumes of sibylline prophecies became part of the Roman tradition under the care of a college of priests in the Temple of Jupiter. The old woman was supposedly the Cumaean Sibyl, originating from Cumes, a Greek colony near Naples. Whether the books were worth their price is another matter – the obscurity of the predictions made them applicable as one chose to interpret them. The three volumes were lost in a fire in the 80s BCE and their content was reconstructed from copies from the four corners of the empire, to be then housed in the Temple of Apollo.

Cicero, writing in the I Century BCE, had his doubts about the sibylline prophecies and noted that the writers skillfully

In Roman times, both Republic and Empire, there was a general belief in material happenings indicating future events, that is to say, that the future could be read in tea leaves or, in Roman terms, in the entrails of a sacrificed goat. The Sibyls, on the other hand, declaimed prophesies coming directly from the gods. However, whatever the source of a prophecy, it had to be interpreted in a traditional fashion by a priestly functionary, according to a prescribed ritual. As pagan Rome progressed to a Christian empire, pagan belief transformed Christian belief as much as the other way round. Delphi, for example, was selected as the seat of a new bishopric maybe to couple the respect and reverence for the pagan Sibyl to the new Christian religion. Sibyls during the Middle Ages and Renaissance The Sibyls slowly disappeared from Roman literature, to eventually reappear in Christian art of the XII Century CE. Christian scholars and church fathers sought, during the intervening centuries, means of showing that the pagan world had predicted the coming of Christ, perhaps to strengthen the sometimes precarious position of the church. These justifications were found in obscure writings and required considerable ingenuity to see such a prediction. Early Christian writers and church fathers, such as Augustine, Clement of Alexandria and others, often quoted the sibylline verses as a support for Christian thought, and thus in this way the Sibyls entered the Christian tradition. First in literature, from the II Century onwards, and then progressing to sculpture in stone and wood and, commencing in the late Middle Ages, wall and vault paintings such as I am showing here. The Roman Church traditionally refers to twelve Sibyls, but sites with fewer are frequently represented. When twelve are found they are in association with twelve “church fathers” – Old or New Testament figures and non-biblical saints. This I suppose to validate the coupling of the pagan Sibyls to the Church teachings. The names of the twelve and their attributes are not always the same. By attributes I mean the items held in their hands denoting something concerning their prediction. Five Sibyls were painted by Michelangelo in the Sistine chapel, together with seven church fathers. There are many examples in Europe, particularly in the south, and it is surprising that they are not well known. So far I have found only a few examples here in France,

but many more must have existed and been lost to the degradations of time. Brittany in particular has a number of sculpted examples. Sibyls and modernity I suspect that fairground fortune tellers have always been with us with their tea leaves, palm reading and tarot cards. Spiritualists with their Ouija boards and knockings on tables, ghostly emissions and guides have been with us since the times of Conan Doyle, and Cumana St Lizier whilst they do not directly deal with prophecies, they do deal with unreal information from an unreal “realm”, as did the Sibyls. Astrologers use the real world of the zodiac to make predictions. However, our modern Sibyls are the supercomputers predicting our weather systems, following and predicting the stock market, and keeping our airways and space ways safe. Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, in her book The Last Man, used what I have always supposed to be a modern literary convention i.e. that, that the author is relating a true story which she or he happened upon in a mysterious fashion. In this case, in the introduction, she claims that whilst exploring near Naples she and a companion entered the cave of the Sibyl at Cumae. At a given moment their guide protested that it was dangerous to proceed farther, but they ignored him and pushed on until they came upon an inner sanctuary. I think that you can guess what they found there – leaves with Sibyl's prophecies Africa Turiac written upon them. These prophesies when deciphered formed the material for the book in question. This was a book set in the 21 Century CE and related the effects of a pandemic nearly wiping out the human race. Was that a real prophecy on the part of Mary Shelley of the effect of COVID-19? Another author, David Drake, wrote a book, To Bring The Light (published together with a book by L. Sprague De Camp in one volume), in which the Cumaean Sibyl was a time traveller – a well-born Roman lady from 300 CE who was transported to the time of Romulus and Remus, 700 BCE, became the Sibyl of Cumae, and ensured the birth of the Roman Empire.

Agrippa St Lizier

Images of the Sibyls found at Tauriac The church of Saint-Martial in Tauriac, Lot, dates from 1549 and has XVI Century paintings on the vaults of three of the side bays of the nave. On the walls and vault of the fourth bay, it has XIX Century paintings over, presumably, earlier works. The paintings on the walls are largely unrestored; those on the three XVI Century vaults were restored in the XIX Century. In the cathedral of NotreLibya Turiac Dame-de-la-Séde, St Lizier, Ariège, the Sibyls were associated with the sons of Jacob and alternated with them in the vault paintings (see DSM April and June 2022). Here in Tauriac, the Sibyls are painted on the SE vault, whilst sixteen prophets are painted on the NW vault. In both cases, the close proximity of Old Testament figures is intended to reinforce the notion that the pagan Sibyls had predicted the coming of Christ, strengthening the Old Testament prophecy of the coming of Christ. The phylacteries (a term originally referring to small, leather boxes containing scriptural passages written in Hebrew, on vellum, worn by Jewish men at weekday morning prayer as a reminder to keep the law), in the form of banners, purport to quote the original Sibyl’s words. In both churches, the Sibyls are shown as women with specific clothing and attributes and a banner proclaiming their prophecy. The paintings in St Lizier show older women, wearing more formal “religious” clothing, and those in Tauriac show young women, wearing Phrygian Turiac clothing in a XVI Century French style lying between that of wealthy traders and the nobility. The details of the Tauriac paintings show the hair as being long and well tended, as befits celibate women of those times, but the women do wear head coverings, perhaps to denote their role as wise women. Each Sibyl wears a robe, over an undergarment that is somewhat longer and of a different colour. The décolleté is small and covered by a decorative top. The wide sleeves of the outer robe are shortened to just under the elbow, and in one case have slits cut in them – a decorative fashion feature found in the clothing of the nobility. There are also necklaces to be seen, as well as other jewellery. Each Sibyl carries a different attribute associated with a detail of the life of Christ, reinforcing her pagan prophecy, and the phylactery proclaims that prophecy. However, the phylacteries are very concise and to the point, which does not agree with the tradition of extensive and very obscure written prophecies.

Greenfingers Down The Lanes Of August

Down the lanes of August- and the bees upon the wing, All the world’s in colour now, and all the songbirds sing; Never reds will redder be, more golden be the gold, Down the lanes of August, and the summer’s getting old. Mother Nature’s brushes now with paints are dripping wet, Gorgeous is her canvas with the tints we can’t forget; Here’s a yellow wheat field- purple asters there, Riotous the colours that she’s splashing everywhere. Red the cheeks of apples and pink the peaches’ bloom, Redolent the breezes with the sweetness of perfume; Everything is beauty crowned by skies of clearest blue, Mother Earth is at her best once more for me and you. Down the lanes of August, with her blossoms at our feet, Rich with gold and scarlet, dripping wet with honey sweet. Rich or poor, no matter, here are splendours spread Down the lanes of August, for all who wish to tread. British born American poet, Edgar Albert Guest. 1881- 1954. Health, Beauty and Fitness

Health Matters by Sue Lennon

ext month, September, is all about Gynae Awareness around the world, some organisations keeping the focus on gynaecological cancer awareness and support, others widening the reach and including everything else besides, from menses to menopause and fertility to fun. In France it is ‘Septembre Turquoise’, and the theme is the prevention and early detection of cancer of the uterus, cervix and vulva. As anyone who has seen a gynaecologist here will know, the gynae service also concerns itself with breast care, but of course breast cancer has its own month (October Rose).

ordinary women can be encouraged to talk, to share and make aware!! I was so taken with this idea that I chatted to three women from a little association called ‘Le Uni Vers Soi 79’ to see if we could do something together (I didn’t want to be the only woman in the supermarket queue with my red pants over my jeans!) and they agreed. So, on 10th September, we have a few activities planned, a bit of chat and a ‘picnicpartager’ to look forward to! It’s an opportunity to: Find out who uses which gynaecologist, where and whether they are menopause friendly. To talk about things like how our kids or grandkids ‘do’ sex education in France and what needs to change. To understand what a sage-femme does and how you get your smear test done. To find out what you can expect to happen if you do present with bleeding beyond the menopause, and what support is available in all areas - not only medically but socially, financially and emotionally too. And here’s the best bit, it’s not compulsory to have a vagina to be allowed in! I’m really excited about it as it is the first time that I have been involved in planning an event here but at the same time am nervous that rural France may not be ready for ‘La Journée des Coulottes Rouge”. So, having called the men to action for Men’s Health Day in June, ladies it’s your turn! If you aren’t coming to our gig in Chiché, is there something that you can do on Red Knickers Day?

I came across all of this information in a very roundabout fashion, having linked with a woman called Kath Mazzella who lives in Australia. She was diagnosed with a gynaecological malignancy some years back and after all her treatment was done, decided to devote herself to breaking down the barriers and stigmas associated with these usually very private cancers. As a result of a great deal of campaigning she has received all kinds of awards, including the Australia Medal, but the reason I mention this woman who lives halfway around the world is that she hopes to make one day, the 10th September, ‘International Red Knickers Day’ for gynae awareness. A day when 50 | The Deux-Sèvres Monthly, August 2022

Could you have a gathering to share practical knowledge on all things gynae? How about you talk to the teenagers in your family about what the menopause is (and include the boys too, one day a woman they love may thank you) or maybe you find support for yourself if you have been through a gynae health challenge and never had the emotional care you needed? I had an email from our friend Ameli in April, who told me that psychology is now available under the MonPsy scheme with an ordonnance from your MT. If that is not possible for you, remember that there are lots of English-speaking counsellors that work online. You don’t have to cope alone! If you need help, seek it. Because you’re worth it.
