ART
I always find myself returning to the vessel. It is part of the intellectual life force of my practice and it precedes all other forms of making. -Theaster Gates
THEASTER GATES

The Face of America Magazine
Gagosian is pleased to present Black Vessel, Theaster Gates’s rst-ever solo exhibition in New York. Gates’s oeuvre is among the most conceptually and materially rich in contemporary art, anchored equally in the canons of art history, the racial ideology of the Black diaspora, and the artist’s own personal history. Through an art practice predicated on cultural reclamation and social empowerment, Gates exchanges and recharges objects and ideas, proposing the artwork as a communicating vessel or sacred reliquary of recollected histories, critical vitality, and shared experience. Traversing a broad range of formal approaches such as painting, sculpture, sound, and performance, as well as the processes of salvaging, archiving, and place making, he delivers penetrating social commentary on labor, material, spiritual capital, and commodity within a close examination of the urban condition.
fi
The Face of America Magazine
In 2012 Gates began to formalize his knowledge of roo ng techniques into a new territory of experimental painting, working with tar to make the invisible roof legible. In a new suite of paintings completed this year, Gates has intensi ed his approach, crafting painted torch down into taut conjoined backdrops for the interplay of archaeological tarred fragments. Just as postwar artists set themselves apart from gestural abstraction by utilizing mass-produced industrial materials and techniques in place of paint and canvas, Gates has imbued abstract painting with unprecedented form and meaning— rst with the Civil Tapestries (2011–), which charged Minimalist language with the legacies of racial injustice; and now in ruggedly elegant works that employ the signifying materials and skilled labor of roo ng to invoke a poignant meditation on urban spirit and its implicit obsolescence.

Walking Prayer (2018–20) serve as precious intellectual reliquaries whereby Black knowledge is restored and reconstituted as monuments to the truth of the Black archive and the importance of Black identity in the pursuit of world knowledge. For Walking Prayer, Gates utilized a wide-ranging historical collection of published books on Black experience, rebinding them in black and embossing the spines with language to constitute one long poem or performative score that moves among many modes of address—inchoate, enunciative, interrogatory. Arranged in an original cast-iron Carnegie open-access library shelving unit, a modular design that helped revolutionize modern libraries, Walking Prayer invites the viewer to engage in Gates’s poetic invocation where reading becomes a processional act and the gallery transforms into a latent warehouse of emotional and spiritual devices. A single Leslie speaker ampli es a single chord from a Hammond B3 organ—a pairing synonymous with Black church gospel and jazz—in a minimal sound loop, building to a crescendo to further sacralize the space.

NATHANIEL ROBINSON
The Face of America Magazine
The New York Times describes Nathaniel Robinson as a “remarkably inventive sculptor [making] technically impressive, philosophically provocative works that play in the gap between perception and cognition — between what you see and what you understand.” Robinson's wizard-like simulations of real-life objects are derived from utilitarian items, relieved from any branding or speci city in design. Using ingenious handbuilding methods and working from handmade molds, Robinson's berglass-reinforced gypsum cement sculptures are scaled up much larger than life and physically manipulated into distortion. While primarily known as a sculptor, Robinson's new paintings merge realism with abstraction, using geometric forms to suggest urban or natural landscapes and environments.

Acting less like an objective record than an evocation of eeting views captured while traveling by train to Manhattan from his home in Brewster, New York, "the artist elevates the prosaic trackside acreage that clutters the periphery of our urban areas." In a review of his rst painting exhibition in 2019, Michelle Grabner continues to write, "Robinson withholds the details that make things unremarkable and exaggerates the abstract qualities that build a compelling image...as with his sculptures, we nd ourselves taking a second look at what is in plain sight." Executed with a minimal, pared-down style and painted in muted, simple colors, Robinson's elegant paintings and crafted objects express a deep ambivalence toward the limits of human perception and function as a metaphor for the ambiguous experiences of everyday life.
Nathaniel Robinson (b. 1980, Providence, RI) received his BA from Amherst College in 2002 and his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005. Robinson has held solo exhibitions at Magenta Plains, New York, NY; Feature, Inc., New York, NY; Devening Projects, Chicago, IL; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL. Robinson has also been included in group exhibitions at the American Academy of Arts & Letters, New York, NY; White Columns, New York, NY; Martos, New York, NY; Thomas Park Gallery in New York, NY; Maerzgalerie, Leipzig; dok25a, Dusseldorf; and TCB art inc, Melbourne. Robinson is a recipient of the American Academy of Arts & Letters 2019 Art Purchase Award and his work has been written about in publications such as The New York Times, New York Magazine, Artforum, and Art in America. Robinson lives and works in Brewster, NY.

NARI WARD The Face of America Magazine
Nari Ward (b. 1963, St. Andrew, Jamaica; lives and works in New York) is known for his sculptural installations composed of discarded material found and collected in his neighborhood. He has repurposed objects such as baby strollers, shopping carts, bottles, doors, television sets, cash registers and shoelaces, among other materials. Ward re-contextualizes these found objects in thought provoking juxtapositions that create complex, metaphorical meanings to confront social and political issues surrounding race, poverty, and consumer culture. He intentionally leaves the meaning of his work open, allowing the viewer to provide his or her own interpretation.

One of his most iconic works, Amazing Grace, was produced as part of his 1993 residency at The Studio Museum in Harlem in response to the AIDS crisis and drug epidemic of the early 1990s. For this large-scale installation, Ward gathered more than 365 discarded baby strollers—commonly used by the homeless population in Harlem to transport their belongings—which he bound with twisted re hoses in an abandoned re station in Harlem. Echoing through the space was an audio recording of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson’s Amazing Grace on repeat. The lyrics speak about redemption and change, generating optimism and a sense of hope. As with most of his work, this installation explored themes informed by the materials, community, and location in which Ward was working. The work has since been recreated at the New Museum Studio in 2019, the New Museum’s Studio 231 series in 2013, and in several locations across Europe. With each change of context, the signi cance of the work changes as each community associates di erently with these found objects.

LIBERTY CIGARS
The Face of America Magazine
John Adams (The actual name of the founder) founded the Liberty Cigar Company with one mission in mind — to tell America’s magni cent story. A story that we hope you will savor as richly as you do our cigar themselves. “It is our hope that as the blue smoke billows about you, whether in solitude or among friends and family, you might give a moment’s pause to think about how truly extraordinary it is that all those who came before us risked everything to make us free.”
fi
The Face of America Magazine
“Liberty cigars homage to the great people in our history by way of a hand-crafted, customblended premium cigar. We have started at the beginning of America’s history and will eventually make our way through all of our illustrious past. Presently, we have 54 di erent cigars with more on the way.”
ff
The Face of America Magazine
“Each of our cigar’s have been created to match the personalities of those whom we have honored. We began by studying their lives and ascertaining their salient traits, with physical and mental - in short their persona.”
The Face of America Magazine
George Washington, for instance, was larger than life, which is why we gave him such a big bold cigar. His vital is a presedentÊ. Fitting for sure as he was the rst president and created the standard for all others to follow. Washington as a very young man was forged in the heat of battle. This literal trial by re instilled in him the courageous and unassailable character which would prove indispensable to the budding American Republic. The Nicaraguan Maduro Ligero leaf wrapper of the Washington is harvested from the top four or ve rows of the tobacco plant which receive 150% more direct light than the rest of the plant. These upper leaves which draw their nutrients from the rich, jet black, volcanic soil, bask in the intense Central American sunlight, infusing in them a bold and rugged character.

The Connecticut Broadleaf binder, also a sun drenched tobacco, produces a rich, complex, muscular avor. It imparts such rugged avors as leather, earth and steel. These avor pro les remind one of the very essence of a soldier at war.

We chose this particular Ligero leaf wrapper as George Washington, like the leaf, was always to be found in the searing spotlight. It perfectly represents his willingness to take on the intense, relentless heat which accompanied America’s herculean ght for liberty.
Who better represents the spirit of liberty than the Founding Fathers. We have crafted the cigar blends to match the spirit of each of 13 founder’s. There were, of course, many more than thirteen paternal patriots (and maternal ones, for that matter) but we pared them down to thirteen for economy, for sure, but mainly for the powerful symbolism which accompany’s that auspicious number —- The 13 colonies in rebellion against the mother country (there are 13 cigars to a box as well). Choosing which thirteen founder’s made the cut was di cult but the principle criterion was this; that each founder was, at one time or another, more or less indispensable to securing our liberty.
ffi
The Face of America Magazine
George Washington was undoubtedly the only one for which there can be no argument. But without the more obscure Robert Morris, for instance, the nancing of the Revolution would almost certainly not have happened. John Adams, to use Thomas Je erson’s words, was the “Colossus of Independence.” Je erson himself, of course, wrote one of the most important documents on liberty in the history of humankind. These, along with Franklin and Madison, you know well. But we have included lesser known patriots like James Otis and the “Swamp Fox” with the hope that you will nd them as compelling as we do. But if our arguments, as to each of the founder’s inclusion, don’t sway you. No worries. All thirteen of the cigars we have created in their name are like the cause of liberty — well worth it.

The Face of America Magazine
About the Founder of The Liberty Cigar Company John Adams was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and still lives there with his beautiful wife and three children. A distant cousin of the more famous Adamses (through common ancestors), John has been fascinated by American History from a very young age. He founded The American History Guild, the parent company of the Liberty Cigar Company, after the tragic events of September 11th 2001. While watching the events unfold half way around the world (He and Ellen were in the process of adopting a child from Vietnam), he realized that the very idea of America as well as its people was being assailed. In that horrifying and yet profound moment, as he prepared to bring his baby son home, he realized that in order for his children and to live in America, it had to live in them as well. The American History Guild thus, was founded to rekindle and stoke the sacred re of liberty so that it may burn brightly in the hearts of those now living and yet unborn. Its vision is to draw upon our Republic’s illustrious past to enlighten and enliven the people of this great nation in order that they, in turn, will do the same. “The projects we have embarked upon, including the Liberty Cigar Company, are myriad and varied but have one desired end: to re-acquaint our citizens with the miracle that was our country’s founding, and in the process, restore the seeds of liberty and civic virtue.Everything we do contains within it the grand hope that America will long endure.” www.libertycigars.com

HOMES
THE SPIRIT OF LEONARD BERNSTEIN
The Face of America Magazine
Fifty years ago Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre, were the owners of one of Park Avenue's very best apartments. Their home was also the site of one of the famous and controversial social-political happenings of the 1970s. When some of New York's wealthiest citizens met with top leaders of the anti-police Black Panther Party. Or as Tom Wolfe described it in his January 1970 New York magazine article, “Radical Chic: That Party at Lenny's.” Big names from the entertainment world including Jason Robards, Jerome Robbins, Otto Preminger, Barbara Walters and Mike Nichols were there. So were Harold Taylor, Lillian Hellman, Cynthia Phipps and several dozen other members of New York City's cultural and intellectual elite. Wolfe described it as a “a penthouse duplex full of stars, a Manhattan tower full of stars, with marvelous people drifting through the heavens.” Although Bernstein is long gone, the Park Avenue home is still one of New York's heavenly apartments and is for sale at $29.5 million.
The Face of America Magazine
The 14-room penthouse sits atop one of the most elegant prewar Art Deco full-service cooperative buildings on the Upper East Side, built in1930. Spread across two oors of the 21-story building, the duplex measures approximately 6,300 square feet with an additional 700 square feet of outdoor space between two private landings. A private elevator landing opens to a 34-foot grand gallery that continues to the formal living room, dining room and library.Â

The owner and the Chef didn't want to do "make believe" food, such as fake plant-based chicken. There's no plant-based yogurt or cheese. Just clean, natural, not processed dishes. There is asian in uence on the menu because asian sauces have a certain amount of "umami" (6th sense taste), which is that feeling when you eat mushrooms and soy sauce (comfortness). Asian avors in sauces are a good way to introduce vegetables to someone who may not like vegetables before.

gifts DIPLOMATICO MANTUATO RUM Diplomรกtico Mantuano is an authentic blend of rums aged for up to eight years. Versatile, Mantuano is ideal for mixing in cocktails while also maintaining its complexity for those who prefer to drink it neat. Opening up with aromas of dried plums, oak and a delicate spiciness, it is complex and well-balanced on the palate, following on with notes of dried fruits, wood and vanilla. A great complement to a good cigar.
