Interview With Deepa Jacob 1) At what age did you discover your talent in photography? What is that one aspect of photography that always made you fall in love with it to take it up as a profession? Ans) Being a photographer was never a life ambition for me. But I think the inner photographer came out once I became a mother and started clicking the pictures of my kids. My albums became a daily journal for me. One thing that was fascinating to me was that those photographs were frozen memories. Even after months or years I could remember the time and emotion of that moment through the pictures. I used to post them to my friends and I started getting questions about where I got those done. After my family, friends became my guinea pigs and then it went beyond.Portraiture is a celebration of the person, so totally hooked onto that now.
Our Inspiration in Photography-DEEPA JACOB
2) The most difficult part of being a professional photographer? Ans) Understanding the client is really important. I have found out on multiple occasions that what I perceive as the best shot or the perfect picture might not be the best for the client. So understanding the need is important
4) The theme of photo shoots you love working on? Ans) I love anything vintage. Bringing out the old world charm in pictures gives me a kick. Fashion and style keeps coming and going. We call them trend. Vintage I feel is beyond trend. It is something that people do not see in their everyday life and hence I feel that can tell a better story.

3) Your favourite photographer whom you always look up to and take inspiration from for your work? Ans) For conceptual photos just like many photographers the one and only Brooke Shaden is my inspiration. The colors, mood, concepts and her over dramatic dreamscapes - she is in a league of her own.I keep waiting to see her fascinating photographs.
5) What are the aspects that you look at before signing up for a professional project? Ans) Right now photography is not my full time profession. I would consider myself as a very serious hobbyist. So I have the luxury to be picky which is not the case with many full time photographers. So I mostly look for projects that let me be creative. I pick clients who have seen my work, knows my style and gives me the freedom to be creative.
MODEL PHOTOSHOOT BY DEEPA JACOB
6) What is the homework that you do before a shoot? Ans) Plenty. Before my personal shoots, its usually a lot of study and discussion with my models to come with the right makeup, outfit, location, poses etc.I enjoy that process as well.I try to see the location beforehand so there wont be any surprises on the day of the shoot. Get good sleep, do your stretches and you are ready.
9) Are you planning to venture with video shooting too? Ans) Defintely. Making this still moving is an even better adventure. I did a short film few years back with one of my girlfriends. I do have plans to make few short films soon and eventually get into film making when I think I am ready. 10) An important change that you would love to see or bring in this industry? Ans) I would love to see a change in fashion photography. We have been seeing the same trend for a long time and I feel its time to bring in some freshness especially in the Indian industry. Bringing fashion from ramp to mainstream would be really cool.
7) An area in our lifestyle where you feel still photography can be more used? Ans) I am not sure. Ever since the emergence of smart phones I doubt whether there is any area that is not touched by photography. Again its mostly what we wore, where we travel and what we ate for lunch. I think people can start expressing their thoughts and feelings through pictures as well. We all might not be poets, we all might not be artists but we all are photographers. It is a powerful medium of expression. It could be an escape that many people are seeking for.

8) A personality whom you would love to shoot in your lens? Ans) Good question. Since I am dreaming let me dream big. I would love to shoot Vidya Balan some day. Also when I think of conceptuals I wish I had Keira Knightley as my model (aiming the stars). And last but not the least I hope the day would come when the one and only one Mohanlal strikes a pose for me.
