McNamee Angus Ranch & Cook Angus 34TH ANNUAL BULL SALE
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17TH, 2022
MILES CITY LIVESTOCK COMMISSION, MILES CITY, MT – 1PM
Welcome from McNamees! Welcome to our 34th annual bull sale. 2021 was a year to remember. No rain, no hay, lots of grasshoppers, but we were blessed with a beautiful daughter/granddaughter/niece, Ryah Jean Martinsen. Kinda funny, Sarah was born in 1988 and her daughter is born in 2021. It truly is an ill wind that blows no good. We’ll take it and praise God for it. We’ve decided to move the sale to Miles City Livestock Commission. We’ve out-grown our facility here at home so were going to town. The two-year-old bulls we’ll be selling are all virgin bulls that we’ve never offered for sale. They were wintered out in a larger pasture and fed the bull challenger pellets and ground hay last year. They were summered out on grass, and as of Dec. 15th they are still out in a section pasture, grazing and getting distillers. The yearling bulls are mostly suitable for heifers. They will be wintered for free and delivered in the spring after they’ve passed a semen test. Any bull that doesn’t semen test will be replaced from the group of bulls we’re keeping for two-year-olds to be sold next year. We guarantee you will be satisfied with the replacement bull or your money will be refunded. We are again selling a package of 50 home raised, one iron, bred three-year-old cows. These cows all raised a calf successfully last year, and are bred back in the first or second cycle for calving this spring. They’re bred to start calving April 1st. There are nine F1 baldie cows bred to McNamee Angus Ranch bulls. The remaining 41 head are purebred Angus cows bred to Sparks Hereford bulls. We’ll be offering three well started, three-year-old ranch geldings from the Buffington Performance Ranch Horse program. Videos of the bulls, bred cows and the horses are available through Tristate Livestock News. We’re still using the star rating for calving ease. 4-star bulls are what we consider sleep all night calving ease bulls. The 3-star bulls may give you a little more at birth and possibly a little more weight at weaning time. We’ll be serving coffee and food in the cafeteria of MCLC all day so come and spend the day. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask any one of us. Thank you for your support and interest in these bulls and our program.

MCNAMEE ANGUS RANCH 34TH ANNUAL BULL SALE

EPD’s Any yearling Angus animal’s EPD’s are interim since they obviously have no offspring yet. Those interim EPD’s are figured by the American Angus Association and are basically 50% the sires EPDs and 50% the dams with slight adjustments up or down for their actual birth and weaning weights. Our benevolent Angus Association has always given an interim EPD when we reported our calves for performance data. However, the board of directors decided that an interim EPD was a benefit of registration and unless you registered these calves, you would not get an EPD for them. The bottom line is too many people were not registering their AI calves because of the cost of the AI certificates. The breeders that sell the certificates were not getting any money when this happened. An AI certificate must accompany every calf that is the product of AI when they are registered. The Angus Association gets $10 for each AI certificate and the owner(s) of the bull usually gets anywhere from $10 to as much as $10,000 per certificate, I’ve heard. The cost is determined by the owner(s) of the bull. This really hurts us as we can’t register our calves early because we don’t collect the DNA information until we wean, and the later you register, the more it costs to do so. If I register late, it will cost me either $14 or $27 per head depending on when I get the DNA information back. What these directors don’t understand though, is they sold me a computer program that figures all the performance data (ratios). Interim EPD’s are not that hard to figure, so, the EPD’s on all of these bulls are 50% the sire’s EPD’s and 50% the dam’s and are not figured by the American Angus Association. All bulls except those marked as commercial are eligible for registration but will be sold without registration papers. If you have to have papers for programs like Angus Source, I will gladly register the bulls for you. If you are a registered breeder buying a bull to clean up on a bunch of AI’ed cows, and want to dabble in these genetics, I will NOT register those bulls. No offense to anyone, but I don’t like watching my good commercial buyers compete for bulls with that type of buyer. I’d much rather see the bulls go where they will do the most good. I also believe the value of these bulls should be set by what they will contribute genetically, and not based on the latest fad or the rarity of the genetics. We are raising bulls for the commercial industry, and have no desire to be part of the mainstream bull-of-the-month club, seedstock industry. We sell semen if you want to dabble.
Inbred Regression Inbred regression in my opinion is about as misused a phrase as government intelligence. Inbreeding will expose problems in a particular animal, not create them. Inbreeding the right animal will likewise emphasize that animal’s good qualities. Too many times, problems exposed when inbreeding gets laid at the feet of inbreeding when the real problem was the animal that was inbred. You can’t make a thoroughbred out of horse shit. We’ve been inbreeding/line breeding 1116 for 12 years now and the cattle just continue to get better. By better we mean better as a group and not just better individuals. Better as in consistency of the type that suits our needs, both from a management and an environment stand point. All of this is not by chance either. 1116’s breeding was created by better breeders than us who believed in this very same philosophy, generations ago. You see it all the time in nature. Animals that come back from the brink of extinction. Think how inbred they must be. If inbred regression played as large of a role as some would like you to believe, Bald Eagles should be the size of pigeons and the wolves in Yellowstone Park would look like scrawny coyotes chasing bison around that were the size of sheep.

MCNAMEE ANGUS RANCH 34TH ANNUAL BULL SALE
11
Welcome from Cooks! Welcome to the McNamee 34th Annual Bull Sale. Thank you again to the McNamee family for letting Cook Angus participate in their sale for the 7th consecutive year. There is a Difference! Cook Angus program is based on a moderate functional female that breeds every year and raises a quality calf requiring limited resources. Cows that are structurally sound, fertile, good feet/udders, and temperament with mothering ability. Longevity is a profitable trait. Several cow families in our herd have multi-generations producing. We do not waiver our core values for open, hard keeping, poor udder, bad footed, high headed cows. In this year’s extreme conditions, 95% exposed cows bred in a 50 day window. Herd sires are home raised or meticulously selected from proven programs to enhance the consistent quality of like kind with profitability. We don’t chase fads or numbers. We do raise cattle that live in a harsh, native environment, take care of themselves and work for us. It is our pledge and sincere goal to provide our old and new customers with quality service and cattle that are functional, low input, and enjoyable to raise. The program stays the same. Our cattle graze on native and improved pastures. Cows are usually fed hay and DDG’s as needed in winter to maintain condition. Salt and mineral are free choice year-round. With this year’s drought and fires we hauled our mature cows to cover crops and corn stalks. We kept our bred heifers, coming 3’s and some older cows here at the ranch. Registered and commercial cows run together, except at breeding. We use some home raised bulls on both commercial and registered cows and heifers. This year we did AI some registered cows. This years sale we will offer 16, 2-year-old bulls with a select group of yearling bulls many suitable for heifers. The bulls were bred, raised, and grown on Rosebud Creek. Two-year-olds summered on what grass they could find. Winter grazed on Rosebud Creek with some hay, straw, and DDG’s. The yearling bulls are hand fed a grower ration of CHS Bull Challenger, DDGs, whole corn, Flax Lick tubs and long stem hay. All bulls have had full branding, preconditioning vaccinations along with being poured. The EPD’s are estimations: formulated using sire and dam EPD’s. We emphasize functional and economical traits rather than chasing numbers. The bull calves have not been registered, if you need a bull registered let us know and we will register at our cost, except those listed as commercial. While 2021 had extreme conditions there was absolutely No Way we could have made it through without the unbelievable support and dedication of family, friends, and neighbors. Old, new and some we have never met. From the bottom of our hearts, we can only say Thank You and hopefully some day we can repay the gratitude! Thoughts and Prayers to all!!! “50U” A bull we purchased from Diamond D Angus 2019. 50U was turned out with our yearling heifers. Calving ease was exceptional and his calves have been impressive. We have started feeding our bred heifers just before dark and check them at daylight. Everything has worked out last few years, the only time we touched a calf was to tag and weigh them. 50U is a very clean made bull with enough depth of rib, length, good stifle, tight sheathed, and excellent feet. We liked “50U” and his calves enough we turned him out with a set of cows this past year. Excited to see the calves this spring.

“4248” is a Bull we purchased from Ryan Neiman to use on our OCC bred cattle. He expresses the OCC thickness, depth, natural fleshing ability, with above average length of rib and spine. His sire group is an even, consistent set of calves. His daughters have enough femininity and length, while his sons are thick, deep, and long This bull continues to stamp his offspring with the OCC “4248” look. As always, several top bulls come from this sire. We have used several sons for our own use. “4248” turns 9 this spring, still 100% sound and active.

“165” was our pick of the ET bull calves out of Cole’s 392 Shoshone Rosemary cow that originated from Larry Leonhert. She was 15 when we flushed her. You can read his pedigree. Don’t know how you could make ‘em any better? Really like how this bull has matured and better yet his progeny. We have 3 full sisters in production, and they are doing a good job for us. “165” was used by McNamee’s this past breed season. With a good amount of “165” daughters in production we went to JAD Angus for a new herd sire. Our Shoshone gene pool is made up of 35 to 40 cows. Look for us to continue to provide proven “Shoshone” genetics.

“936” is a bull we bought from Jack to use on heifers. We used him two years on heifers, liked what he sired, so we turned him out on cows ever since. Just what you expect from a lined-up McNamee bull, smart prolific breeder, sires even, consistent calves. His daughters are productive, attractive, typical Shoshone females.
Two-year-old’s will have passed a fertility, semen, and trich test. Yearling bulls will be fertility and semen tested, vaccinated with Multia Min 90 and Foot Rot prior to delivery. If a yearling bull does not pass a test, we will replace him with a bull of equal value or refund your money. Cook Angus retains half semen interest in all bulls selling. 14

At catalog time, we do not know this bull’s sire. Sire is probably “4248” or a son of his. Will know by sale day and make any corrections needed. Either way he’s a good bull. The first time I showed Jack our cows, told him this might be my favorite Shoshone cow. 103’s dam came from a set of cows I bought from Larry Leinhart in 2005. This bull has been good from day one. Like everything about him. How he looks, carries himself, moves out, plus his pedigree.

This bull sells commercial. Looking at his pedigree, lots of longevity. Sires dam produced for 17 years. Maternal Grand dam weaned a calf at 14 last year. Bull has good length and nice shape.

Claire and I are really proud of this set of cows. Our purebred cow numbers have gotten as high as we’d like them so we’ve decided to breed and calve all our heifers except the tailenders, keep what we need to maintain our purebred numbers and sell the rest as bred three-year-olds. We’ll sell them in lots of ten. High bidder will be able to take the pick of any or all lots. These cows are cake broke and used to being handled horseback. They’ve been poured for lice, vaccinated with Vira shield 4 +VL5, and they’ve always been on Vita Ferm Concept aid 10 mineral.

Shotgun is a good minded and extremely talented good looking colt. He has great potential to go on and make your next performance horse. He is a full brother to Digger that Krutzfeldt’s bought a couple of years ago. I started him this past summer and then used him this fall on the ranch and will continue to ride him in the barn right up to sale day. I’m really impressed with this colt. Same as last year if buyer wants I will keep him for two months and get some calving miles on him. That will be included in the purchase price.

Clancy is fancy!! He is a beautiful, well built, 3 year old grey gelding with an exceptional mind. He also was started this past summer and then used this fall on the ranch. Will continue to ride him in the barn until sale day. Also if buyer wants I will keep him for two months and continue his training and get some good calving miles on him all included in the purchase price. At that time he would be ready to go for anyone. He has the look, athleticism and mind to go in any direction you want from ranch to the arena. He’s gentle and should fit the whole family.

MCNAMEE ANGUS RANCH 34TH ANNUAL BULL SALE
23
emory In M We lost Jean’s dad, Pete, last year. Most of you regulars at our bull sale will remember him.
He made many of our last sales. Pete was a grand guy and he lived a full life. From growing up in South Africa, to helping design and build the first nuclear power plant in England, to learning to run a swather at 84 years of age, he would tackle anything. We wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for Pete and Helen’s support and encouragement along the way. He loved coming out to the ranch and will be sorely missed by everyone here.
