See sale horses in action starting at 9 a.m. for the Performance Preview and compare foals side by side during the Weanling Showcase. Visit with the breeders about their programs. Remember all foals will be halter broke, gentle, and eligible for the 2024 RQHBA Futurities. Breakfast and lunch will be available on the grounds.
The Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association was first organized in the spring of 2000 when a group of South Dakota quarter horse breeders met to formulate a plan to market their foals, and has since evolved into a highly recognized Performance and Prospect Sale & Futurity, featuring the top offerings from member ranches. Ranches must apply for membership and participate as a Guest Consignor for at least one year; before being selected for membership by the RQHBA to assure that their program meets our high standards.
Each ranch may not sell more than 50% of the current year’s foal production. The purpose of this rule is to maintain a high quality sale without having a total production sale for any one member. Besides the current 10 member ranches in western South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming, and southeastern Montana that are RQHBA members, there are also high quality invitational saddle horses being offered in the sale.
All horses sold at the RQHBA Sale are inspected for quality. The sale horses are vet checked by a veterinarian when they are Coggins tested. They are then inspected by a screening committee and sale veternarian sale day. All foals sold in the sale will have AQHA 5 Panel test for both sire and dam (HYPP, GBED, HERDA, PSSM1, MH). Those results of the 5 Panel test for both sire and dam will be posted at the sale.
Riding horses must have been owned for at least one year and will be previewed before the sale.
As a group we strive to breed horses that are sound and structurally correct. We are confident the quality of our horses will meet your highest expectations. This is a sale where you can find a truly versatile horse suited for the arena, the show ring, trail riding or ranch work. All 2023 foals are eligible for the 2024 Don Brunner Yearling Futurity and the RQHBA 2 & 3 year old Ranch Horse Futurities as they come of age. Ranch visits are always welcome. All horses will have a clean bill of health and coggins to travel anywhere in the country.
You will find the member, guest consignor and invitational rider names and phone numbers here in the catalog. We encourage you to contact each individual about the horses that interest you.
All horses are available for inspection at the respective ranches anytime prior to sale day. Know that all horses in the sale are selected from a larger group and each ranch has more at home like the ones that are represented for sale. Your visit is always welcome!

As an association that believes in our motto, “The Sale Where You Can Buy With Confidence,” RQHBA has instituted that all sires and dams of weanlings sold through this sale must have an AQHA 5 Panel Genetic Disease Test. Below is a description of what those tests mean. Test results will be available on sale day. We hope this will help you make an informed decision that allows you to buy with confidence. AQHA has just this year added a ‘6th’ disease to their panel this year. Some horses will have that additional test, but most will not. It is a work in progress adding this 6th test to all of our sires and mares.
Genes come in pairs; each parent contributes one copy to the offspring. With respect to the autosomal dominant genetic diseases listed below (HYPP, PSSM, and MH), only one defective gene is necessary to express the genetic disease in question. Such gene can be inherited from either of the parents or from both of the parents. With respect to autosomal recessive genetic disease listed below (GBED and HERDA), typically, two copies of an abnormal gene (two copies = a pair) must be present in order for the horse to show signs of the genetic defect in question. Horses with only one copy of the defective gene are considered “carriers”.
GBED - Glycogen Branching Enzyme Deficiency. Fatal disease of newborn foals caused by defect in glycogen storage. Affects heart and skeletal muscles and brain. Inherited as a recessive gene.
Possible results:
N/N Normal - does not possess the disease-causing GBED gene.
N/G Carrier - Heterozygous (one normal and one GBED gene).
G/G Affected - horse has two copies of the GBED gene.
HERDA - Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia.Skin disease characterized by hyperextensible skin, scarring, and severe lesions along the back of affected horses. Typical onset is around 2 years of age. Inherited as a recessive disease.
Possible results:
N/N Normal - horse does not have the HERDA gene.
N/HRD Carrier - horse carries one copy of the HERDA gene. HRD/HRD Affected - horse has two copies of the HERDA gene.
HYPP - Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis. Muscle disease caused by defect in sodium channel gene that causes involuntary muscle contraction and increased level of potassium in blood. Inherited as a dominant disease. Two copies of the defective gene produce more severe signs than one copy.
Possible results:
N/N Normal - does not possess the disease-causing HYPP gene.
N/H Hyperkalemic - Heterozygous (one normal and one HYPP gene).
H/H Affected - horse has two copies of the HYPP gene.
MH - Malignant Hyperthermia. Rare but life-threatening skeletal muscle disease triggered by exposure to volatile anesthetics (halothane), depolarizing muscle relaxants (succinylcholine), and stress. Presumed inheritance as a dominant disease.
Possible results:
N/N Normal - horse does not have the MH gene.
N/MH Affected - horse has one copy of the MH gene.
MH/MH Affected - horse has two copies of the MH gene.
PSSM1 - Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy Type 1. Muscle disease characterized by accumulation of abnormal complex sugars in skeletal muscles. Signs include muscle pain, stiffness, skin twitching, sweating, weakness and reluctance to move. Inherited as a dominant disease.
Possible results:
N/N Normal - horse does not have the PSSM1 gene.
N/PSSM1 Affected - horse has one copy of the PSSM1 gene.
PSSM1/PSSM1 Affected - horse has two copies of the PSSM1 gene.
MYHM - Myosin-Heavy Chain Myopathy. A genetic muscle disease that can result in two distinct clinical disease presentations that both involve muscle loss or damage and are linked to the same genetic variant. A horse with MYHM is prone to presenting with one or both during their lifetime, while some horses with the mutation may never experience symptoms.
Possible results:
N/N Normal - horse does not have the MYHM gene.
N/MYHM Affected - horse has one copy of the MYHM gene

Gray’s Diamond G Ranch are a new generation of ranchers planning a breeding program based on life experience and common-sense research. We are very proud and excited to join the RQHBA sale family. We ranch 26 miles south west of Alzada, MT were we raise black Angus cattle and quarter horses. We use our horses for all aspects of ranch work and strive to raise cowy, good minded, versatile horses that are easy to train and easy on the eyes. Our stallion AJ Oak Rocker was raised by Allen and Jamie Hockenbary. After breeding to him for many years and having outstanding foals out of him, we finally got the opportunity to buy him. He is a versatile horse with tons of cow, conformation and an outstanding disposition
which he passes on to his foals. AJ Oak Rocker has earned an ROM in working cow horse, trail and reining and has points in halter and western pleasure. He’s been used in heading, heeling, tie down calf roping, barrels and poles. He also is a money earner in NRCHA for Jr. working cowhorse and SDQHA for Jr. Reining and CON for Jr. reining and Jr. Trail, heading and heeling. Carlson Romero Quarter Horses is located in Belvidere, SD. We have been raising horses together since 2010. We currently run a black angus cow/ calf operation, and we use our horses almost daily. This is a family operation so we need horses that will work for us, as well as the kids. Our main goal in raising horses is to have them versatile, cowy, the mind, and the ability to withstand the demands of everyday chores and to hold up in the river hills and badlands. We like a horse to have quick feet, good confirmation, withers, eye appeal, and bone to carry them throughout their lives on the ranch or in the arena. We have raised and purchased the mares that comprise our brood mare band, and selected them on their confirmation and cow. We have three stallions. All of our stallions are broke to ride and all are five panel negative.
Under The Rare Sun is a gray stallion we purchased as a baby from the late, great Ann Seacrest-Hanson and Bob Hanson of the Logging Camp Ranch. Ann is a National Cowgirl Hall of Fame inductee
for being one of the first ladies to pickup at the rodeos. She and Bob built a program that provided ranch, rodeo, and pick-up horses. Sonny sires colts with keen heads, a big hip, bone, and they have a nice disposition. We use Sonny for calving and fall work.
Bold Blueboon is a brown roan stallion we purchased two years ago. We are getting our first foal crop out of him this year and we are not disappointed. Boon originated from Cudd Quarter Horses in Oklahoma. Boon sires colts that are cowy, shapey, and classically put together.
SS Bravestone is a black stallion with lots of shape and ability. His first colt crop was born this year and we are very excited for them. Bravestone was used for calving this spring and made our job easy with his cow. He possesses quick feet, brains, and a very kind and curious personality. We are very excited for his future with us, as well as his offspring.

Welcome to the 23nd annual RQHBA Select Sale.
2023 marks our 26th year of raising Quarter Horses. We appreciate all the friendships we’ve made while raising horses. All foals are eligible for the RQHBA futurities and AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge.
Quixote Boonsmal (Playboy Boonsmal son out of a Docs Quixote daughter) His pedigree is packed with performance. Boon is consistent in producing roans with conformation and athletic ability. We look forward to seeing them perform. His oldest for us are yearlings this year.
Paddys Shine (Grandson Paddys Irish Whiskey) is a bay stallion that stamps his colts with kind willing dispositions and with lots of shape to them. His colts are very trainable with solid minds.
Our mares are the foundation of our program. Foundation blood with
some cow bred and speed mixed in. The majority of our mares are ridden before becoming broodmares. Sir Bea Cowboy our senior stallion left us this spring at the age of 27. We are grateful for the daughters we have in our program to carry on his legacy.
He was a once in a lifetime stallion for us.
My Lucky Star a son of Lucky Wonder Horse and out of a Missin Freckle mare is new to our stallion battery and we look forward to seeing his foals. Thank you Robin and Melvin Zebroski for this well bred stallion.

Welcome to the 23rd annual RQHBA Breeders Showcase Sale! We are very excited and honored to be members of this organization! What a year we are having! So thankful for the rain and green grass! Life finds us busy and on the go, just like all of you! Our family loves going to brandings, honoring and continuing on a longstanding western ranching tradition. It is very exciting and rewarding to see home raised horses ful-filling our belief that a ranch horse can do anything! Curtis has started taking over riding some of the colts, and it has been really fun to watch him learn! He has a great touch with them and doesn’t get bothered about much! Raelee has really upped her horsemanship this year, as the mare she has ridden for the last several years is a mama this year (look for Bambis Smart Crystal’s colt in the sale)! She has drug a lot of calves this year on a horse we were worried might be too much for her, but they have hit it off and drug a lot of calves to the fire!

We are excited to have a colt in the sale by our son of Boonlensma that we kept, Boonys Cee. Boonys Cee is 6 panel N/MYHM. He is turning out to be all that we have hoped. We are offering a full brother to him in the sale. Boonylensma is still going at 24 years old! Each year with him is a blessing, and one we definitely don’t take for granted! We are riding a gelding from Shield Five Ole Cat’s first crop of colts, and he is everything that we had hoped he would be: super athletic with a good mind and great disposition! Ole has crossed very well on the Boony daughters. We wean our babies around the 1st of August, so they are eating grain and ready to go when you take them home. Welcome to the 2023 RQHBA Sale! This is our 4th year with this great group of quarter horse breeders.
We hope you enjoy your visit to the Black Hills, Belle Fourche and Besler’s Cadillac Ranch. It’s a beautiful area and I feel very fortunate to have grown up right up the road along the Redwater River where my parents, Ralph & Becky Crago still live today. Growing up here, there were many hours spent horseback- riding the hills and the creek bottoms calving, lambing, foaling, hunting and fishing. Great memories and many good
horses have been made in this area. We live 20 miles north of Belle Fourche with our 2 children, Casen-14 and Kyler-10. We raise horses, cattle and sheep. The kids have kept us on the go with football, basketball, dance, 4-H and rodeo. Both of our kids have competed on home raised horses in 4-H Horse shows with great success. They also compete in playdays and a few junior high and 4H rodeos. Clete and I competed in Billings at the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge last October and had some success on our horses. Clete, Kristy, Casen and Colby Crago won the 2022 Butte-Lawrence County Fair Ranch Rodeo riding home raised horses.

Boy, we sure are beside ourselves being invited to offer our foals at this sale and stand alongside some of the best horse breeders in the area. Hale Quarter Horses is a newly founded horse venture that has been founded in 2023 by us, Tee and Alex Hale, of Union Center, SD! We have owned and ranched on horses our whole lives, but
owning and breeding with a stallion of our own is something we’ve always dreamed of!
We have always been huge fans of Shining Spark and his offspring. Tee’s #1 heel horse, “Niner”, shares this lineage and we were looking for a stud with his pedigree to a breed a few mares to in 2022. That’s when we came across pictures of DT Shiner browsing the internet. We went and saw him in person and instantly fell in love with

Each year we offer a select group of Invitational Riders as a sale highlight. Once again, our Invitational consignors have brought another set of high quality horses! Many have spent time in the branding pen and doing all of the ranch chores. There is also a group of exceptional lead in horses that have all of the basics done with them and are ready for you to take on to the next step.
Riding horses must have been owned for at least one year and will be previewed before the sale. Come to the preview starting at 9 a.m. to see them work. All horses are vet checked for soundness and will have health and coggins to go anywhere in the United States.

Cheyenne is a sweet, gentle, black 2y/o filly. She has been with me since she was 4 months old. She has been handled daily and has had lots of groundwork. Her first ride was April 26th and was very quiet without any buck. The end of May we are just finishing her 1st 30 rides. In her 1st 30 rides she follows a fence, moves her shoulder, hips and softens at the ribs, has a nice back up, I’ve been opening & closing gates off her, soft in the face, she rides out alone & crosses water and logs. She loves people, has excellent ground manners, is good with her feet, trailer loads easy & I can’t seem to find an obstacle that bothers her. She is easy to catch as she is the first to come to you and will put her head in the halter.

I have owned Chexs for 4 years. He’s been used on the ranch a lot. I have sorted a lot of cattle on him; he is as cow savvy as any horse I have ever had. When roping cattle in the pasture he will track good. He drags calves to the branding fire good. He neck reins really good, he sidepasses well when opening and closing swing gates or wire gates. My grandsons have ridden him and got a long good. Anyone that knows how to ride will get along with him fine. He is gentle, good to trim, and shoe. He is guaranteed to be sound. When he is fresh, put him on a lunge line and make him lope 8 or 10 times each way and he will be good all day.

Cool is one of the nicest two year olds I have had in a while! This colt was lightly started in February and has had quite a bit of riding since then. He has been rode all over the desert in Arizona, and is super fun to go exploring on. Cool is also getting a good handle on him in the arena, he is riding around great and wants to have a big stop! FUTURITY INFORMATION:
• Purse divided per stallion, gelding and mare divisions. Futurity is for yearlings only
• To be eligible, the yearling must have sold as a foal through the previous years RQHBA Showcase Sale; eligibility will follow the horse.
• The yearling must show at the RQHBA Showcase Sale in the Don Brunner Yearling Futurity.
• Entry Fees are $50 paid by Aug 1.
• Winnings will be awarded to the registered owner at the time of the futurity.
• Original papers are to be presented for show registration to verify ownership.
• Showing expenses are the owner’s responsibility (Entre fees, stall, etc.).
• Payout will be 60% for 1st place, 30% for 2nd place and 10% for 3rd place.
• RQHBA members and weanling consignors are not eligible to compete for the futurity funds.

RQHBA Ranch Horse Futurity
Any horse purchased from a member through the RQHBA sale that turned 2 or 3 years old in 2023 can compete for cash! Mares, geldings and stallions can compete against others in their age division for $500 per class, plus all entry fees will be added to each ages pot.
Entry fees are $75 paid by Aug 1. Following is what the 2 and 3 year olds will be judged on:

• First Place in each class wins 60% of the pot, second place wins 30% of the pot and third place wins 10% of the pot.
• In the event of a tie, the horse with the highest reining score will win.
• Participants will have three attempts at each obstacle before passing. Participants have the option of skipping any obstacle the rider feels would not do their pattern justice.
