Cardio Myths Debunked: What Could Be Hindering Fat Loss? By: Victoria Haig
Most people relish the idea of being a bit leaner, and most people believe that the best way to kick off their fat loss is through cardio. Whether done through jogging, biking, or heading to the gym to hit the treadmill/bike/ elliptical, all cardio activities are embraced with vigor. The purpose of this article is to explain why this approach is fundamentally flawed. Cardio is an inefficient way to lose fat and improve your body composition. Instead, I highly recommend a combination of exercise and diet to manipulate muscle building/ fat burning hormones and elevate your metabolic rate for a real physique transformation. I will endeavor to explain why. Although this notion may fly in the face of popular opinion, let’s take a look at the science behind the matter. There is a vast body of scientific research that rejects the traditional method of steady state cardio for fat loss. This study in particular, makes the case in an extremely comprehensive manner. The researchers compared the hormone levels of three activities to identify how different types of exercise created different hormone responses independently of workload or adaptation, using the following sample groups: 1. A short sprint (x2 30 second all out sprints) 2. An endurance session (cycled 30 minutes at 70% of their maximum) 3. A weight workout (30 mins using 75% of one rep maximum with1 minute rests)

The results showed that the weight training workout was the only one to elicit a significant increase in testoserone. The sprint session increased growth hormone, insulin, and cortisol – suggesting that this may be the best cardio tool for fat loss. In contrast, the endurance session elevated cortisol and growth hormone, and decreased insulin. In simple terms, the body preserved glycogen so it could continue to function as the exercise continued at a steady state. We can conclude that the central purpose of aerobic exercise is train the body to use as little energy as possible whilst doing the work - which seems entirely counterproductive - if fat loss as opposed to performance is your primary goal. We have all seen cardio bunnies in the gym. They spend a lot of time on the elliptical or treadmill, yet despite their swear to eating next to nothing, their body composition never changes. This is because too much aerobic exercise can have a negative impact on hormones by reducing your testosterone, raising cortisol, and making you more efficient at preserving calories. Another argument often used to defend steady state cardio is that fat loss boils down to purely
calories in vs. calories out, a myth that is perpetuated by many of the popular tracking apps available today. Like most things in life, fat loss is not black and white, the truth lies somewhere in the complex grey area. Yes, aerobic exercise does burn more fat than resistance exercise whilst you are exercising, but that is not the end of the story – on the contrary, it is merely the beginning. The greatest fat loss benefits take place whilst we are resting or between exercise sessions. So what should you do? It would seem apparent that strength training should be the cornerstone of your training; however, we can enhance our fat loss by taking a two-pronged approach. According to the study, anaerobic or the sprint training was an excellent option for fat burning. So strength training coupled with anaerobic cardio is your best fat loss formula. To be technical: The Anaerobic ‘lactic acid’ glycolytic system produces an exclusive hormone balance for many hours after the exercise is finished. Typically, after an intense anaerobic workout you get increased levels of testosterone. Human growth hormone, epinephrine and norepinephrine (also known as noradrenalin and adrenalin – these are chemical hormones located in the adrenal glands that dictate metabolic response within the body.) This group of hormones shifts the body into muscle building and fat burning for hours after your workout. Assuming that your diet supports your training goals then for most people anaerobic training creates a harder, more muscular looking body – the prime example being a sprinter. Sample activities: circuit training, sprints, sled runs, tire flips, vertical jumps, and combat sports.

6 Killer Exercises to Build a Firm Chest
Ironically, some women pay large sums of money just to have boobs as big as some men - but little perky and round – while men can get overwhelmed and embarrassed of them. The main factor behind this phenomenon is gynecomastia, an endocrine system disorder that produces a benign increase in male breast tissue. This case can be easily treated 12 | December 2016
with proper diet and consistent physical activity. However, not all men with boobs are suffering from gynecomastia! Sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits, and bad posture for prolonged hours contribute to weight gain, which shows up in all body areas, including the chest. As the pounds pack on, the pectorals start looking flabbier. None of these factors can
solely yield effectual results unless one overhauls his training routine, nutrition program, and strong posture. Sleep also allows most of your hormones, such as testosterone and growth hormone, to be released and recover from workouts. Fatigue, on the other hand, undermines your ability to function properly and commit to all three pillars, thus raising your level of body fat.
Once you successfully pursue a new lifestyle, you will witness a fruitful transformation in your body’s composition, and those once ghastly flabby boobs will turn into manly pecs. Here are six moves that can fulfill your goal. Perform in circuit of three sets, 10 reps per exercise.
Bench Press
There’s a reason all gym rooms contain racks and bars. It is one of the ultimate ways to test strength and power in your chest, shoulders, and triceps. Most guys must work up to 225, but wherever you begin, you’ll start to see results. Lie back on a flat bench. Using a medium width grip, lift the bar from the rack and hold it straight over you; arms locked and chest squeezed. This will be your starting position. Now breathe in as you come down slowly until the bar touches your middle chest. Hold and repeat the workout for the prescribed amount of repetitions. Ideally, lowering the weight should take about twice as long as raising it.
Kettlebell Swings
This workout may not directly target the chest, but it will inevitable strengthen the hips, shoulders, and core. Stand with feet about hip-width apart. Hold a kettlebell with both hands in front of you with straight arms. This is your starting position. Squat as you lower the kettlebell along an arc under and between your legs. Keep your back straight. Drive your hips and swing the kettlebell up until your arms are straight and parallel to the floor. Start and finish the swing by loading, firing, and hinging at the hips. Remember to keep your shoulder blades drawn back and down throughout the swing.
Alternate Dumbbell Press This bench variation stabilizes your shoulders in addition to providing the same benefits of the traditional bench press.
Lie back on a flat bench, hold dumbbells at the outside edges of your shoulders, and then lift them up over your chest. This is your starting position. Keep one arm straight and lower the other dumbbell till it touches the outside of your shoulder, and then push it back to the initial position. Repeat for the opposite side, continuing to alternate between arms.
Make sure to push and extend with both hands at the top of each lift.
Pull-Ups
This workout contributes to the elimination of man boobs by enhancing the shoulder, back, and all way to the torso. If you add a pulling movement between two pushing movements without a stop, you will increase the intensity of the workout and thus build muscles. Grip the bar with an overhead grip and keep arms straight. Squeeze the shoulder blades back and down. Keeping the legs still, pull the
body up toward the bar, so that the chin slightly passes the top of the bar. Squeeze the gluteus at the top movement, and then slowly return to the starting position.
Reverse the motion by extending the elbow, pushing yourself back up into the starting position.
Burpees

n the world of Yoga, age is measured by the flexibility of the spine. Thus, to stay young, you should keep your spine flexible! A number of asanas (poses) – such as cobra, cat/cow, bridge, and bow, just to name a few – can work on your spine and increase your flexibility. When moving in and out of any pose in yoga, a painful and uncomfortable feeling may be encountered. That’s why Yoga advocates bridge breath with movement. Consequently, when you practice a pose, elongate the spine as you breathe in and contract the spine as you breathe out. The combination of breath and movement distributes the vital life force, also known as Prana, to each vertebrae thereby lubricating and massaging the spine and joints. This prevents problems such as arthritis, increases bone density, and thereby reduces the risk of injury and improves posture and spinal alignment. In addition to the physical benefits of staying flexible, it is said that being physically flexible induces mental flexibility. For example, it is common to hear older people saying things like “this is the way I am,” “I know myself, I don’t do…” or “I can never do/ be like this.” This is called rigid thinking, especially for those who truly believe that they have reached a point where they can no longer change. Luckily with yoga, change is happening all the time! With each new pose, there is a change in breath, and with each day, there is more or less flexibility. So over time, yoga practitioners become more comfortable with the idea of change. So instead of resisting a new job, career, adventure, or a relationship, you become more accepting, embracing, and trusting.
On an emotional level, yoga poses especially back bends - release negative emotions that have been stored/buried in the body over the years. Think of the years that went by where you were pretending not to be angry or sad. Maybe because you did not want to hurt someone else’s feelings. Maybe because you were respecting an elderly person. Maybe because you were told not to cry in public. Whatever the reason is, emotions that were never released in the past are stored in the body and contribute to old age. Back bending poses release negative emotions and keep the heart feeling light. An open heart contributes to a state of OKAYness with who you are and the external pressures that you face.

Finally, growing old is associated with frequent illness and disease and all diseases begin with a poorly functioning digestive system. Yoga helps by building a heat known as ‘Agni’ that is a little like an inner fire in the stomach. When this fire turns very hot through the various core strengthening poses like boat pose, plank pose, and breath practices like breath of fire, we become much more able to eliminate toxins from the body through the digestive system. This reduces the likelihood of illness and weight gain, and keeps you feeling light, healthy, and young. But don’t take my word for it, try these poses next time you feel sick! Feel The Afterburn You’ve probably stumbled upon the ‘afterburn effect’ and felt allured by its weight loss edge without fully understanding how it works. Let’s find out…
Also known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption or EPOC, the afterburn effect is basically further energy expenditure that occurs post to a given physical activity. When your body is pushed during exercise, your metabolism fires up for the consequent days and may take up to three days before returning to its normal pace. Hence, the more intense the exercise is, the more oxygen your body consumes afterwards. According to study called “Effect of Exercise Intensity, Duration, and Mode on Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption,” the magnitude of metabolic process is affected by the intensity, type, and duration of exercise, as well as the gender. Another study conducted by scientists at the National Institute of Occupational Health in Norway, number of cyclists were divided into three groups: each exercise at a different intensity of 29%, 50%, and 75% of VO2 max for 80 minutes. Researches found that the greatest EPOC was witnessed in the 75% group, where it lasted about 10.5 hours and burned about 150 calories. Thus, intensities above 50% of VO2max are required in order to trigger the metabolic process. But you don’t have to work out for a long time to reap a functional effect. High-intensity workouts can also get you there as long as you exert 70-85% of the max heart rate. Above all, you can incorporate HIIT several times a week without overtraining. A good demonstration of this can be supported by a study called “Comparison of Energy Expenditure Elevations After Submaximal and Supramaximal Running.” The study divided participants into two groups; one group ran continuously at 70% VO2 max for half an hour and the other did sprint intervals to 105% of VO2 max for 1 minute followed by 2 minutes of rest, also for half an hour. The afterburn effect of the interval group was double the continuous group. If you are new to this routine, you may opt for a work-to-rest ratio of 1:2, where you can do one minute of workout followed by two minutes of rest. 16 | December 2016
1 Cycling
There is no better time to enjoy morning breeze other than cycling on a Friday morning. If you divide your one-hour ride into two, you are more likely to replenish the oxygen stores and double the afterburn.
2 Resistance
A study at New York’s Syracuse University found that, over 48 hours, supersets increased afterburn by an extra 450kcals compared with regular training. To sustain thus, you may employ opposite muscle groups so that one rests while the other

works.
Running
Swap your steady runs at medium intensity with 20 x 1 min intervals with two minutes rest between sprints. You will feel the flames licking at your insides! This doubles the succeeding calorie burn compared to a halfhour run at 70% effort, according to research published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology.
4 Combo
A study from Brigham Young University revealed that people who hit the treadmill or perform cardio before their resistance training improved their level of afterburn compared to others who did it the other way round.

What got you into CrossFit?
Sport and basketball have always been integral to my life until my early 20s. I found myself paving the road to serious weight gain and health problems that are associated with my new sedentary lifestyle, which eventually enthused me to hit the gym more often. Three years later, I discovered CrossFit. It captured my attention and interest to the extent that I thrived to upshift my performance into a whole new level through completing and earning CrossFit license 1 and 2 from the United States of America. Furthermore, I decided to partake in ELFIT Masters 35+ that took place last October, and proudly won the first place. Now, I train athletes at BeFit with Aly Mazhar, and help 18 | December 2016
with transforming people’s lives. I feel over the moon every time I witness someone losing 15 kilos or something through a healthy and fit lifestyle, and I admire their strong willpower and determination.
Winning the first place in ELFIT Masters Males 35+, what does it take to win a prize? Discipline! I learned that if I have to procrastinate, then I must procrastinate procrastination. I am not a superior person or anything, but when I set a goal, I consciously and unconsciously chase it. Hence, I believe discipline is the key. If you want to get the most out of your training, don’t choose the gym with the best equipment but rather commit to a gym with a good coach. An
effective workout routine accompanied with a healthy lifestyle, sleep, and willpower will certainly lead you to the right destination.
You are also the General Manager of Kato Prestige Cosmetics Co. Tell us more about your corporate life.
My mother founded Kato Prestige Cosmetics Company in 1969, with the mission to become the leading toll cosmetics and perfumes manufacturer in Egypt. Given that my mother is my biggest inspiration, I decided to follow her footsteps. Thankfully, we manufacture cosmetics and detergents to some of the most prominent multinationals in Egypt, such as Unilever and Johnson & Johnsons.
From your wide experience, how can someone lead a successful life?
For me, success is living a smart and fulfilled life. I think it is very imperative for one to find their purpose and mission in life and find the power to attain their goals – no matter how small or big they are – only then will they tap their resources and realize their true potential.
What is a typical day like?
Ideally, I wake up at 5 a.m. to hit the gym and enjoy a productive morning workout. Then I go home, shower, and relish a healthy breakfast before heading to work. I work
from 9 -2 and then drive all way to the other side of Cairo to train athletes at BeFit, and finally go to bed and sleep early. Part of living a well-balanced life is learning how to stick to all elements that can help you pursue a healthy lifestyle.
What was the toughest challenge you have ever faced?
I’ve been through countless personal and family problems; however, I don’t let them take over my ambitions or life. I am a fighter by nature, and I stand up for what I believe in. My journey with weight loss and healthy well being inspired me to encourage
individuals transform their old wrong habits into smart ones. Their challenges become my challenges and I earn a magnificent triumph when one of my athletes pursues a fit and healthy well-being.
Finally, what kind of advice would you give to the younger generation?
A well-balanced life is essential for personal success, peace of mind, and general wellbeing. Thus, I advice anyone to live well, eat smart, drink more, train hard, sleep well, be disciplined, and stay away from smoking or any addictive habit that may destroy your life. December 2016 | 19

Oftentimes, we hear about the powerful benefits of antioxidants and even incorporate them in our regimen without fully understanding the concept behind them. The human body produces antioxidants and free radicals naturally to counteract their harmful outcomes. However, free radicals usually exceed the existing antioxidants; hence, maintaining a balance between both becomes fundamental to neutralize and remove free radicals from the bloodstream. Certain behaviors can trigger the numbers of free radicals within our bodies. Smoke, pollution, harmful ultra violet rays, air pollution, and excessive alcohol consumption can boost the production of free radicals in the body, causing implications and age-related diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, immune dysfunction, cataracts, muscular degeneration, and Alzheimer disease. There are a wide variety of antioxidants found in nature; each provides a wealth of benefits for different body parts. For instance, beta-carotene found in carrots is very favorable for eye health, while lycopene found in tomatoes is recommended for men to sustain prostate health. Autism is a complex neurobiological, developmental disorder that is typically diagnosed in childhood. The hallmark characteristics of autism include:

Being overweight can put children at increased risk of numerous health problems, both in childhood and adulthood, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, bone and joint problems, and depression. The effects of these conditions may take an even greater toll on individuals with autism in combination with common autism symptoms and some highly co-morbid conditions such as gastrointestinal problems as well as depression and anxiety. Physical activity is important for children with and without disabilities alike as it promotes a healthy lifestyle, but can benefit individuals with autism in unique ways. However, participation in physical activity may be challenging for individuals with autism because of numerous reasons such as limited motor functioning, low motivation, difficulty in planning, increased auditory, visual, and tactile stimuli may too prove challenging for affected individuals. Furthermore, physical activity involving social interaction such as team sports can present a difficult situation for someone with autism who has severe impairment in social connections.
However, if the exercise regimes are implanted the right way, they will have a significant change in the quality of life. A lot of studies on the effects of treadmill walking program on weight reduction in adolescents with severe autism revealed that the program significantly decreased body mass index among the participants. Additionally, as time progressed through the study, the frequency, duration, speed, and elevation of the treadmill walking all increased. A study about swimming and water exercise among children with autism comprised of 10 weeks of hydrotherapy which included three, 60-minute sessions per week, resulted in significant increase in fitness levels indicated by changes in balance, speed, agility, strength, flexibility, and endurance of the person.
Besides improving fitness, motor function, and behavior in individuals with autism, among the most important advantages of physical activity are the social implications of participating in sports and exercise. Physical activity can promote self-esteem, increase general levels of happiness, and can lead to positive social outcomes, all highly beneficial outcomes for individuals with autism. For those with autism who are able to participate in team sports, this
presents an opportunity to develop social relationships among teammates and learn how to recognize the social cues required for successful performance on the field or court. However, individuals that prefer individual sports such as running or swimming that do not rely as heavily on social cues may still benefit from the positive attributes of physical activity while forming social relationships with coaches or trainers. In all cases, participating in sports provides individuals with autism
with a role in society that may not have existed otherwise. While different individuals with autism may face different challenges regarding engaging in physical activity, these children should still be allowed to experience the benefits of physical activity.

he quadriceps are a group of four muscles on the front of the upper thigh just above the kneecap that work together with the quadriceps tendons, patellar tendon, and hamstrings (on the back of the upper thigh) to extend and bend the leg. When training in high-speed, such as track and field sports, injuries to the quads become very likely, even to the professional ones. A quadriceps strain could be a partial or complete tear in one of the four muscles or their tendons, due to stretching beyond normal limits. Therefor, it is essential for athletes to build strong quadriceps to be less prone to such injuries.
Causes of Strained Quadriceps Quadriceps muscles are most often strained when the muscles are placed under more force than they can withstand that the muscle fibers, tendons, or both start to tear away from the bone. This can most often happen when the muscles are fatigue, poorly warmed up, hit by a direct blow, or during acceleration. An imbalance between weak quadriceps and stronger hamstrings can also trigger injury, a condition that is common among runners. A weakened quadriceps tendon are often caused by the following factors:
Tendinitis Inflammation of the quadriceps tendinitis can weaken the tendons and make them prone to small tears. This condition is especially common among individuals who jump frequently.
Chronic Disease Diseases that disrupt blood supply can also trigger weakened tendons. Among the popular chronic diseases are chronic renal failure, conditions associated with renal dialysis, hyperparathyroidism, leukemia, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic disease.
Immobilization Both muscles and tendons that support the knees lose strength and flexibility when the athlete spends prolonged period of time off the feet.
So Who Is at Risk of Strained Quadriceps? Movements that require a burst of speed can definitely subject any athlete to serious injuries. Among the sports that entail speed are football, basketball, rugby, rope jumping, and sprints. Also any athlete with a previous quadriceps injury is more likely to suffer the same injury again.
Symptoms An athlete with quadriceps injury may encounter pain when flexing, moving, or stretching the thigh muscle; swelling; muscle spasms; or bruises on the front side of the thigh if blood vessels are broken.
How to Deal With Quadriceps Injury? The best method to use with any injury or sprain is RICE. • Rest and avoid any vigorous activity for a couple of months. • Apply ice for about 20 minutes, three to four times a day for the first 48-72 hours. • Apply heat after the first 48-72 hours for about 20 minutes, three to four times a day. • Cover the injured area with bandage to minimize swelling. • Elevate the affected leg as much as possible throughout the day and night by placing the leg on few pillows. • Aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen may relieve pain.
Comeback Strategy Mild quad strains usually heal within 10 days, moderate strains may take up to six weeks, while severe strains necessitate three months or longer for recovery. However, your comeback doesn’t fully depend on a number of days; you must be physically able to move normally and feel the presence of leg strength and range of motion. Once ready, you must consider the following approaches to ensure a healthy comeback. • Perform each movement required in your sport separately and make sure you feel no pain before returning to your initial routine. • Make a gradual comeback, meaning that you shouldn’t train as hard as you used to do before the injury. • Use heat on the area before an exercise session. • If running is an integral part of your routine, do not run in full speed as it places impact on the quadriceps, which can result into further complications if not fully recovered. • If pain is experienced during the training, stop immediately. • Incorporate exercises that don’t place a
heavy demand on the quadriceps, such as swimming. • Apply ice packs for 15-20 minutes after every training workout.
Prehab A single injury can last a lifetime, thus it is imperative to integrate a proactive way of training that strengthens the injured areas without placing great emphasis on them. The following prehab exercises can ease your comeback.
Foam Roll - Quadriceps / Hip Flexor Lie on a sport mat with face pointing down on the ground. Place a foam roller under the front of the thigh and roll the quad from the hip to just above the knee.
Foam Roll - Hamstrings Sit on a sport mat and extend one leg to the front and place the foam roll under the back of the thigh. Place the other foot flat on the floor. Keeping the back flat, lean forward and stretch for a couple of seconds. Relax as you roll over the foam, and repeat the stretch.
Glute Bridge – Padded Lie on a sport mat and point face toward the ceiling. Bend your legs to 90 degrees. Squeeze a rolled-up towel or a ball between your knees and lift your hips into the air. Hold for few seconds and then return to the starting position. Repeat for the prescribed number of reps.
The more uncomfortable it is, the more that muscle needs to be massaged.
How to Avoid Quadriceps Strains? You're more likely to encounter a strained quadriceps strain if you've had a previous injury to the same muscle group. To avoid its reoccurrence, do not increase the intensity, frequency, or duration of exercise more than 10 percent a week, increase the duration of warm-up when exercising in cold weather, and stop exercising in case of any tightness or pain the in quadriceps.

ohnny Guindi Hamui from Mexico realised his motorsport dreams last month as he was crowned the 2016 Nissan PlayStation® GT Academy International champion at Silverstone Circuit. The 22-year-old triumphed above 35 other elite Gran Turismo® gamers from around the world, winning a place on the comprehensive Nissan Driver Development Programme and a race seat in the 2017 Hankook 24 Hours of Dubai race, alongside 2011 GT Academy winner Jann Mardenborough. The decision came after an epic eight-day Race Camp in the UK, with Hamui chosen as the winner due to his consistent pace and adaptability throughout the week, as well as a willingness to listen and take on all the advice given to him throughout Race Camp.
Hamui then went on to take and consolidate the lead before seeing the chequered flag. “I can’t believe it,” said Hamui. “What I’ve just achieved is going to take a while to sink in! It’s been an unbelievable experience with some seriously tough competitors and I’ve had the best time of my life. In the race I was just so concentrated on doing a good job that my 11 laps in the car flew by. I was alone for five laps and I was just looking for consistent lap times and then on my sixth lap I saw the North Africa car coming out of the pits. I was in a great rhythm and overtook him on the
outside. After that it was all about holding it together and luckily I did that, I can’t describe the feeling when Jann read out my name as the winner!” Hamui’s journey with Nissan will begin almost immediately, as he takes to the track for a national event at Brands Hatch this weekend with Nissan’s RJN Motorsport team. RJN Motorsport, who run Nissan’s participation in the Blancpain Sprint and Endurance Series throughout Europe, will also be the team that Hamui will race for in Dubai in the Nissan 370Z GT4 NISMO.
In a new format for 2016, Race Camp came to an end with a 16 lap endurance race around Silverstone International Circuit, with two competitors from each territory taking part in the final race. In previous years, mentors have selected just one competitor to contest the race but this new format gave a more in-depth look at how a larger range of competitors perform on the big occasion. Before the final race, the remaining 12 gamers took part in a ride along with their mentors, before a 15 minute practice session of driving. In this session, it was Indonesia who started fourth on the grid, setting the pace, and were four tenths ahead of the rest of the field. When the race got underway, Mexico initially made a quick getaway and led into the first corner; however, they were hauled in by the quick-starting Mohamed Wally from North Africa who took the lead and built a gap in his eleven lap stint. Mexico pitted early, changing Enrique Manjarrez for Hamui, who within two laps had set the fastest lap of the race. When North Africa eventually stopped, Hamui had narrowed the gap completely and the pair went into the first corner side-by-side after North Africa emerged from the pits.
