Energy Efficient Upgrades Are A More Viable Option Thanks To PACE BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

A

RE YOU CONSIDERING MAKING ENERGY efficient upgrades to your home, but holding back due to the cost? Out of pocket, upfront expenses often deter these upgrades even though they stimulate the economy, benefit the environment, and save money on many monthly bills. What you may not know, is that many local communities have joined forces to make these home improvements a more viable option for homeowners. In 2011, Pinecrest, Cutler Bay, Palmetto Bay, South Miami, Coral Gables, and Miami, voted to create a district known as the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) District as part of the Clean Energy Green Corridor Program. The purpose of PACE is to make financing available to local property owners. A local governmental program, PACE allows municipalities to provide financing to private property owners for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and hurricane protection improvements to their properties. The property owner then pays it back over a maximum of twenty years through a special assessment on their property tax bill. It is 100% non-credit based financing which allows property owners easy access to capital. The PACE program started in Berkely, California in 2008 and quickly spread throughout the country. The State of Florida passed a PACE law in 2010 which allowed for municipalities across the State to adopt the program at a local level. The program is voluntary and does not cost the member municipalities any money to operate. Ygrene Energy Fund Florida administers the program on behalf of the municipalities in the

district. Ygrene (“energy” spelled backwards and pronounced “why green”) is a company that dedicates itself to administering PACE programs around the country. For a project to be eligible for financing, it must be related to energy efficiency or hurricane protection, and also must be something that is affixed to the property. Therefore, energy efficient appliances are excluded, but other projects such as insulation, more efficient air-conditioning systems, high impact windows and doors, LED lighting, strengthened roofs, solar power, and efficient water heaters, are included. Local residents and businesses have been quick to take advantage of the lower utility bills, reduced annual repair and maintenance costs, decreased insurance premiums, and increased property market values. According to a report presented at the Clean Energy Green Corridor District Meeting on August 1, 2014, Palmetto Bay is leading the green pack, ranking first in total financed projects among all participating municipalities in Miami-Dade County (residential and commercial properties combined). In addition, Pinecrest reports that residents have already been using the program to finance many types of projects to the tune of approximately $1 million in upgrades. To find out if a property is eligible for the program, visit www.flgreencorridor.com and enter the property’s address. If eligible, the website will send a link to the property owner to fill out an application. If you have questions before applying, you can contact Ygrene at 305-569-0015.

Pinecrest Awarded Medals For Its Achievement In Addressing Childhood Obesity Through Let’s Move! BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

D

URING THE PAST FOUR DECADES, CHILDhood obesity rates in America have quadrupled. With more than 23.5 million children and youth in America—nearly one in three—overweight or obese, a significant amount of children are at higher risk for a host of serious illnesses, including heart disease, stroke, asthma, and certain types of cancer. In 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama launched Let’s Move!, a comprehensive initiative dedicated to help the problem of obesity so that children can grow up healthier. As part of this initiative, local elected officials were called upon to adopt longterm, sustainable and holistic approaches to address childhood obesity. Local elected officials who sign up as a Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties (LMCTC) site are willing to commit to five goals which were designed to promote sustainable strategies intended to improve the health of local constituents. For meeting each prong of the five goals, bronze, silver, and gold medals are awarded. To date, the Village of Pinecrest has received all three grades of medals, meeting aspects of four out of five of the goals. Earlier in the year, Pinecrest received a bronze medal for Goal III: Smart Servings for Students, by committing to increasing participation in the School Breakfast Program (SBP) and the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). After meeting the next step of this goal, a silver medal has now been awarded, which required that at

A bronze medal was also earned for Goal I: Start Early, Start Smart, which was awarded when Pinecrest committed to helping early care and education providers incorporate best practices for nutrition, physical activity and screen time into their programs to provide children with a healthier start. For more information about Let’s Move!, visit www.letsmove.gov. For more information about Pinecrest parks and recreational activities go to www.pinecrest-fl.gov/parks or call 305-284-0900. these recent awards. In January, Pinecrest was awarded a gold medal for completing the Goal V: Active Kids at Play, which entailed increasing play spaces for children, promoting physical activity and making outdoor recreational facilities easily accessible. To receive the gold medal, Pinecrest mapped all play spaces, completed an assessment of all play spaces, developed an action plan and at least three proven policies, programs, or initiatives from the action plan were launched to increase access to physical activity. Play spaces include any place where children and youth can play and be physically active, such as publicly accessible playgrounds, indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, skate parks, parks, fields, trails and greenways. Organized league sports including Soccer, Football, Basketball, and Baseball, all contributed to meeting and exceeding Goal V.

least two actions were taken to expand children’s access to programs that offer healthy food before, during and after the school day, and/or over the summer months. This goal was met through efforts such as the Pinecrest Community Center partnering with the Pinecrest Library to provide healthy free lunches, as well as the installation of new vending machines offering healthy foods and drinks at Evelyn Greer Park. In addition to the silver medal, a bronze medal was also recently awarded for completing Goal IV: Model Food Service, which entailed identifying all food vendors and contractors for municipally-owned or operated venues that offer or sell food and beverages, along with the dates when their contracts can be amended or renegotiated. Pinecrest already had a few medals under its belt before 12

YOU CAN HELP TOO!

P

ARENTS AND CAREGIVERS CAN JOIN THE INITIAtive by setting a great example for the whole family by creating a healthy environment at home. Here are five steps that can help get you started to build healthy habits for life. »» Keep fresh fruit in a bowl within your child’s reach to grab as a quick snack. Store especially tempting foods, like cookies, chips, or ice cream, out of immediate eyesight, like on a high shelf or at the back of the freezer. Move the healthy food to the front at eye level. »» Take a walk with your family after dinner. The best way to begin increasing your family’s physical activity is to schedule time for it. Start by identifying at least three 30-minute time slots this week for activities like taking a walk, playing sports or doing active chores. Choose times of the day or week when everyone is most likely to stick to the schedule. »» Plan a menu for the week. Get children involved in planning and cooking. Eating nutritious meals in right-size portions will help you and your family be healthier and will give you the energy you need to get through the day. Preparing healthy meals doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive—it just takes planning. »» Turn off the TV during meals and enjoy some family time. Research shows that families who eat together tend to eat more nutritious meals. Make eating together a priority and try to have family meals at least two to three times a week. Also try to set rules that reduce “screen time” by limiting the amount of time children spend on the computer, watching TV and playing video games. The time spent in front of the screen could be better spent being more physically active. »» Talk to your school Principal about organizing a School Health Team. All schools that receive support from the USDA are required to develop wellness policies that address school food service and physical activity. Many schools have working groups dedicated to improving the school’s health programs and policies. If your school has such a group, join it. If it doesn’t yet, help form one.

United Way seeks 200 volunteers for ReadingPals BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

C

AN YOU SPARE 30 MINUTES A WEEK TO HELP ENRICH THE LIFE OF A PREschooler? United Way of Miami-Dade is calling on volunteers to do just this. Kicking off its third consecutive year, the ReadingPals program consists of volunteers who read to pre-schoolers to help enhance their literacy skills. Just last year, the program recruited 160 volunteers who clocked 1,500 reading hours at more than 50 pre-school classrooms in some of Miami-Dade’s most vulnerable areas. Although it may not seem like much, entrance and exit assessments showed that the volunteers and teachers enhanced literacy skills (print knowledge, awareness and oral language, and vocabulary) of 168 children by more than 100 percent. “After reading [to my students] we would walk around the library and I would tell them, ‘Look at all of these books, soon you’ll be able to read every single one. And if you can read every book here, you can learn anything you ever want to learn. And that’s what we are going to do together,’” said Alvin Blake. Blake, who is starting his third year as a ReadingPals volunteer, is a retired Vice Mayor for the City of North Bay Village. “I let the kids express themselves, later realizing I’m talking with four-year-olds about things they’ve never talked about, like snow and Velcro shoes,” added Blake. Before I knew it, I started to see tremendous improvements in their literacy skills. I saw excitement [in the children] and real changes.”

Over the course of 28 weeks, 200 ReadingPals volunteers will spend 30 minutes per week at one of more than 50 early learning classrooms. Volunteers are matched with pairs of children to help build vocabulary and other literacy skills by reading high-quality books and engaging them in interactive learning activities. To expand early learning beyond the classroom, ReadingPals provides each participating student with four take-home books, along with easy-to-follow activities that align with VPK standards and promote kindergarten readiness. At the end of the program, each child receives a ‘Transition to Kindergarten’ kit that includes a book, a calendar of summer activities for the family and resources for parents on a child’s transition to kindergarten. Ten United Ways in Florida are currently participating in this three-year initiative, funded through a private grant from Carol Jenkins Barnett, chairman and president of Publix Super Markets Charities, and Barney Barnett, Publix vice chairman. Local partners include: Early Learning Coalition, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami-Dade Public Library Systems, The Children’s Movement of Florida and The Children’s Trust. RIANA VEGA, AN INSPIRING STUDENT WHO ATTENDED WESTMINSTER Christian School (WCS), lost her battle with Leukemia earlier this year. At only twelve years old, Vega left a lasting impression on all who knew her. To honor her memory, Westminster held a Fishing Tournament to benefit the Live Like Bella Foundation for Childhood Cancer, which was founded in memory of Bella RodriguezTorres, another amazing child who cancer took much too soon. “We are thrilled to join forces with Live Like Bella to make a difference in the lives of children battling cancer, and to bring honor to the memory of Briana,” said Pete Cabrera, WCS Superintendent. The Westminster community was hit hard by Vega’s passing. “Briana made a special impact on the Westminster community in her short time here as a student,” said John Manoogian, WCS Middle School Principal. “Her classmates and teachers decorated tiles to create [a] memorial as a way to honor her and to remember the joy she brought to so many.” The Fishing Tournament took place on August 23, at Shake-a-Leg Marina. For $300, a boat with up to four passengers could enter the competition, which began at 8 am. Nearly 30 boats participated. The winner of the Tournament was Road Rage, captained by Chris and A.J. DeMoya, whose business, The DeMoya Group, was also the main sponsor of the event. For those non-boaters who wanted to participate, or for families waiting for their boaters to return, a Dock Party was held from 12 noon – 5pm at Shake-a-Leg Marina. A $25 pre-sold ticket, or $30 ticket at the door, included lunch, refreshments, and a variety of family fun activities like Slip ‘n Slides and Bounce Houses. In addition to the entertainment, raffles were offered and a small marketplace was available with vendors who donated 20% of their proceeds to the Foundation. More than $20,000 was raised in honor of Vega. Throughout the event, Vega was in everyone’s thoughts. “The best way to remember Briana is by doing something meaningful to support children who suffer from childhood cancer just like she did,” said Ana Poveda, WCS Director of Public Relations. “By directing all proceeds from the WCS Fishing Tournament to the Live Like Bella Foundation for Childhood Cancer, we know we can make a difference in the lives of many children, and that is just what Briana would have wanted.”

Founded in 1961, Westminster Christian School is an independent, college-preparatory, coeducational school serving 1,072 students from preschool through 12th grade. The Mission of the Live Like Bella Foundation is to fund Pediatric cancer research of novel, non toxic treatments for a cure, to provide in treatment assistance to families with recreational support, and to assist families with the purchase of a headstone or urn in the tragic event their child passes away. OST PARENTS DREAD THE END OF MATERNITY LEAVE. THE FIRST DAY back to work following several months with a newborn is a hard one, and the anxiety over leaving a new tiny infant in someone else’s care can be very nerve-wracking. To aid in that transition, the Bet Shira Early Childhood Center has recently taken steps to ease parents’ fears by expanding their pre-school to include a creative curriculum that extends to infants and toddlers. After 20 years at Bet Shira ECC, Director Dr. Judi Gampel is always looking for ways to grow and develop new programming. “Bet Shira ECC prides itself on our family atmosphere,” said Dr. Gampel. “There is a need in our community for infant care for our working moms. As our congregants’ families expand, our ECC is so happy to have the opportunity to open new doors,” she added. The program was a vision for some time, but after recently having a baby himself, the Temple’s Rabbi Kula was the impetus that set it all in motion. “We are so thrilled that our vision is becoming a reality,” Dr. Gampel said. In the past, Bet Shira ECC began at 18 months and went through Kindergarten. Now, infants as young as 3 months old can partake in the new infant/toddler program with hours extending from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., 52 weeks a year. The program is run by nurturing teachers with specialized training in child development, Pediatric CPR, First Aid and developmentally appropriate programming. In addition to creating a stimulating environment, the teachers are there to meet the individual needs of the children in their care, including helping the babies reach milestones from crawling to recognizing colors. Bet Shira ECC prides itself on its close-knit atmosphere and wants parents to feel comfortable and informed about their children’s time spent at the school. One way the teachers stay connected with parents is through a journal. Every child has a journal which includes notes such as what the child ate that day, what their bathroom habits were, what their mood was like, and other information about the day. Parents can also use the journal to send notes back to the teachers. While created to foster learning and development, the brand new infant/toddler room was also designed to help keep germs to a minimum. Foregoing carpet, the room has a rubberized floor. All visitors are required to take off their shoes before entering the room and there’s a hand washing station by the door. Furthermore, only the teachers and parents are allowed to have contact with the children. Along with the knowledge that their children are in a clean atmosphere, parents can feel confident that they are also engaging in structured activity. A typical day includes hello/goodbye rituals, the typical meals and nap times, playing with toys, dabbling in art and Bet Shira’s unique Mooshy Room, enjoying stories and books, having fun with music and movement, going outdoors, and much more. At Bet Shira ECC, your child’s needs are met physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively, and spiritually. “The infant/toddler room offers parents peace of mind knowing their children are cared for and nurtured,” said Rabbi Kula. “Judaism values community and Bet Shira strives regularly to be a center for people’s lives.”

“I THOUGHT I WOULD HAVE TO LIVE WITH MY PAIN AND STRESS UNTIL I DISCOVERED THIS SIMPLE YET AMAZING SOLUTION” PAIN!!! it comes in all shapes and sizes, all varieties and flavors and it doesn’t matter the time of day or year. It could be a neck pain here, back pain there, nagging headaches, you name it and you’re feeling it. It may be daily, weekly or even occasionally. You feel it driving in your car, walking in the mall, and even sitting down. You’ve tried many solutions but it always returns and shows its ugly head. You probably wonder why all your friends don’t suffer from this ... well they probably do but don’t want to let you know and the ones that do will give you their combination of pills that help them through until the next episode. Perhaps you’ve grown accustomed to the pain and discomforts. You CAN function and it’s just a matter of getting used to it. Why do you suffer from it, well the most common answer you are getting is: “You’re not getting any younger” You work out and try to eat right but continue to feel the pain and discomforts that affect your everyday life. Even your workouts and activities are limited. You’re trying to stay healthy but can’t put in the full effort because of your limited movements. You even feel your muscles tight and restricted. You probably believe the ‘not getting any younger’ saying because you can’t even pinpoint where it is all coming from. Did you know that there is a direct link between stress and pain? When there is stress, muscles will have a tendency to tense up and this tension constricts the blood vessels that flow through those muscles. When muscles are not receiving proper blood flow they will let you know by PAIN. So: STRESS CAUSES PAIN... among other things Stress is a much larger contributor to pain and ailments than you can imagine and the worst part about it is that often times you may not even realize that you are under stress. It is the cumulative effect that will get you. Here are some symptoms that are highly linked to stress; Fatigue, memory loss, jaw pain, colds and flu’s, gastrointestinal problems, asthma and allergies. Any or all these symptoms have affected your everyday life and it never fails to come when it’s the most inconvenient. Holidays, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Weddings, Galas.... Even your vacations are affected Can you believe it, I mean you’ve looked forward to it, planned all your activities and then to be limited by pain and symptoms. That’s not what you planned for, not what you envisioned and frankly it’s just unacceptable. No matter your age you shouldn’t be feeling this way regardless of what reasons, pseudo solutions, or explanations you are given. You know you are not getting any younger but you don’t have to settle for that answer, WHY? Because they’re simply WRONG. This amazing solution will change everything We’ll first talk about this change. It is not the aging process alone that causes all these aches, pains and stress. When you remove the stresses and imbalances in your body your pain begins to subside and subside QUICKLY. Not only will you experience pain relief but you will begin to realize how much you had given up or had accepted as normal that in fact was limiting your day to day life. Pain relief brings a state of better relaxation which allows your sleep and rest to be improved. It has been estimated that about two thirds of people suffering from chronic pains experience sleep disorders. Sleep is integral for health and wellbeing. It enhances your immune system and allows the body to heal and refuel, so you have the proper energy during your waking hours. Decreased tension in the muscles increases proper blood flow and helps maintain muscle elasticity and flexibility so that you are no longer limited when exercising or performing daily activities. These changes also advance exponentially because one builds on the other. So there will be marked improvements on many aspects of your health and life, you will experience BETTER: Energy, Moods, Relaxation, Sleep, Focus, and Concentration Now we can talk about this surprisingly simple yet amazing solution. We’ll tell you what’s so simple about it and later we will reveal what makes it so amazing.

You have heard the words “there’s nothing new under the sun”, well let’s see it in a little more detail: “that which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Need a little clarification; that which has been is what will be; the solution you will experience is based on technology and procedures that have been around and proven to work in and of its self, this is what will be. That which is done is what will be done; From these present day technologies and procedures is the care that will be done. There is nothing new under the sun; so in essence it is not a new technology, treatment, or procedure. At first glance it looks like you could get it anywhere. This is what is so simple. It is out there and easily accessible but... This SIMPLE Solution isn’t STANDARD, ORDINARY or COMMON Italian sausage, lean ground beef, minced onion, garlic cloves, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, water, white sugar, dried basil, salt, ground black pepper, fresh parsley, ricotta cheese, eggs, mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese and lasagna noodles. Yes you guessed it, it’s the ingredients for lasagna. I’ll repeat, the INGREDIENTS for lasagna. Without the recipe it could be a disaster waiting to happen. Without the recipe and the right chef it could be just a standard, ordinary or common lasagna. Bland tasting, not leaving a lasting impression and possibly leaving you without a desire to have one again. A take it or leave it attitude. All the technology, innovations, procedures, and equipment are just ingredients at our disposal to bring together for administering care but unless you have the right recipe and the right chef it may just be a bland, unimpressive care that may not be as effective as it should. You see recipes are tweaked and modified, and through improvements and time they are perfected to deliver the final product. Many times they have a secret recipe that sets them apart. Yes, this simple solution is not standard, ordinary or common. The combination of technologies, equipment and procedures have been put together over the last 14 years to give lasting and effective results. This recipe is: TIME TESTED AND EFFECTIVE Why in the world would you take my word for it? I wouldn’t. I am one of the biggest skeptics out there. You see, what makes a lasagna amazing is not the chef telling you it is, but the consumers and patrons praising it, coming back for more and telling their friends. That is the true revelation between success and failure. Here are some of the AMAZING results. “…Prior to seeing Dr Blanco, I suffered severe left hand pain and occasional low back pain. I always thought that the problem was muscular but through Dr. Blanco I found that it was also skeletal. In almost four weeks of treatment all my pain is almost gone. I have found that the treatments helped me increase my flexibility and speed in karate. I used to be skeptical until I met Dr. Blanco. He has been a tremendous help for me. He is honest as well as a good listener. I am now a frequent patient and have now made these treatment’s a part of my healthy lifestyle.” -M.B. “…After I began my therapy sessions I feel like a new me. I was unable to do any physical activities prior to my sessions at the clinic, and now I can resume all my regular everyday tasks and it is all thanks to my treatment with Dr Blanco.” -G.S. “…When I called Dr. Olivio’s office I was in pain for three weeks. I suffer from fibromyalgia and have been experiencing a lot of pain. My back went out and my body was completely out of shape, and on top of this I had back surgery five years ago. I was very scared, but Dr. Olivio spoke with me and said that he could help. Not just with my back but also with the fibromyalgia. He was sure of that and he did it! My back is back to the right position and my usual pain level had lowered. I can sleep much better and I can be myself again thanks to Dr. Olivio Blanco and his team. If you are in pain, just go to Dr. Olivio Blanco’s office; you will not be sorry. The girls are wonderful, professional, nice, sweet, and always treat everyone with respect. Above all, they KNOW what they are doing. Now, about Dr. Olivio; what can I say? A wonderful team needs a wonderful leader.” -P.A. “…I want to thank Dr. Blanco and his great staff for their dedication, kindness and for taking great care of me for the last couple of months. When I started with them I was in constant pain in my lower right side of my back. As the weeks passed I have felt great and I have been pain free. The treatments and therapy does work and I am grateful. Again thanks to Dr. Blanco and the staff. May the Lord bless you guys.” -J.T.

Tips For Packing a Healthy Lunch BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

W

ITH THE RETURN OF SCHOOL COMES THE RETURN OF THE PACKED lunchbox. In just a few steps, parents can make nutritious, exciting lunches for their kids to help keep them energized during the school day. When it comes to selecting foods, “try to include one fruit, one vegetable, and a good source of calcium,” says Registered Dietitian Erin Corrigan, who is a Certified Specialist in Pediatrics at Miami Children’s Hospital. Here are some suggestions of how to incorporate Corrigan’s advice into your child’s lunch. Calcium: Yogurt and string cheese are great ways to get calcium in. If your child can’t eat dairy, there are many milk substitutes fortified with calcium that can be used. Vegetables: Vegetables can be hard to get into some kids. Corrigan advises using dips as a way to make vegetables more fun. Packing baby carrots, sliced peppers, cucumber or celery with dips like hummus, bean dips, peanut butter or sunbutter, will give kids more incentive to eat their veggies. Another option is to send a cold, whole grain pasta salad that includes peppers, broccoli, and peas. Fruit: When it comes to fruit, try to avoid fruit juice or fruit snacks. Whole fruits are the best option since they contain the most fiber. Smoothies with fruit and added hidden vegetables work too. Calcium can be added with milk or a milk substitute. Smoothies can be frozen and sent to school in a cold thermos. Protein: Deli Meat should be avoided if possible. If purchasing deli meat, try to look for low sodium options that don’t contain nitrates. Leftover roasted chicken or turkey,

Your Everyday Gift Store in Pinecrest

hard boiled eggs or egg salad, wild tuna salad, hummus, or bean dips are all healthy choices for protein. Carbohydrates: Try to avoid a mostly carbohydrate filled lunch since this gives kids a quick rush followed by a crash. To eat carbs with protein, look for a whole grain pita pocket or bagel thin for sandwiches and brown rice for choices like rice and beans. Avoid Food Dyes: Food Dyes are hidden in many foods – especially those marketed to children. These dyes are linked to hyperactivity and a host of other health issues. Read food labels and try to avoid sending these products to school. Pay attention to food packaging and storage. To reduce exposure to BPA, avoid canned foods and plastics and choose lunch bags that are PVC-free. Always include an ice pack in your child’s lunch to keep their food at a safe temperature Add some fun. To add some personality to your child’s lunch, cookie cutters are great for cutting sandwiches and fruit. Bento Boxes are also perfect for storing foods in separate compartments, which help with portion sizes and help eliminate waste by avoiding the of use of plastic bags and tin foil. For more advice on keeping your children healthy, The Miami Children’s Hospital’s (MCH) Food & Nutrition Services Department now offers consultations at select MCH Outpatient Centers, including the Palmetto Bay Outpatient Center. These consultations are intended for youth with nutritional and feeding deficiencies that can occur with an array of conditions, such as: Diabetes, Food allergies, Gastrointestinal disorders, High cholesterol, Weight management, and Sports Nutrition.

What’s Happening in Our Communities? JIM CASON

MAYOR OF CORAL GABLES The City of Coral Gables continues to be a top destination for foreign visitors. Recently, our City welcomed several dignitaries from Italy as part of an International Visitor Leadership Program hosted by the Department of State and arranged by the Miami Council for International Visitors. Visiting our city were representatives Alessandro Cattaneo from Pavia, Mariachiara Fornasari from Brescia, Simona Molisso from Naples, Cristina Tajani from Milan and journalist Gerardo Ausiello. The Italian delegates met with representatives from Coral Gables to discuss transparency in government and what we can learn from each other in order to provide better services to our constituents. Coral Gables residents should be proud that our city is truly an international attraction. Coral Gables is home to more than 20 foreign consulates and foreign government offices. We also have established Sister Cities relationships with Aix-en-Provence, France; Cartagena, Colombia;

Granada, Spain; La Antigua, Guatemala; and pending agreements with Curitiba, Brazil; Pavia, Italy; and Quebec, Canada. Our richness as a City is not only based on our cultural heritage, Mediterranean architecture, and beautiful surroundings, but also for our attention to all things international. Here in Coral Gables we welcome everyone - from all parts of the world - with open arms.

Palmetto Bay’s leadership in the number of successful projects in the PACE/Green Corridor program is a reflection of the contribution that the program is making to residents and businesses in our community as well as a positive reflection of our community’s concern for the environment. The opportunity to make big improvements in their homes and buildings, to lower utility bills, reduce annual repair and maintenance costs, improve hurricane protection, decrease insurance premiums, and increase the property

market valuewhile decreasing our community’s impact on the environment is viewed by residents and business owners as a valuable opportunity. Leading the «green pack» of member cities in the number of successful projects will only continue to bolster the program in Palmetto Bay as word spreads about the positive impacts. Palmetto Bay is a community that is sensitive to environmental issues and PACE provides solutions to some of those issues.

CINDY LERNER MAYOR OF PINECREST

It is critical that every homeowner and business owner learns how they can become more energy efficient if we are to be a more resilient community. We are leading the way on engaging our residents and our commercial sector in investing in energy efficient improvements by taking advantage of the PACE program, where they can get a full efficiency assessment of their home or business. The program pro-

vides opportunities to also upgrade their hurricane preparedness with new roof, impact windows and for those who have always wanted to go solar, this is one way to finance the investment.

PHILIP STODDARD MAYOR OF SOUTH MIAMI

South Miami has opened its long-awaited community swimming pool at Murray Park. The city’s effort to build a pool was begun in 1964, the same year as the Civil Rights Act ended legal segregation. The past few weeks, the pool has been filled with joyous splashy children and a few oldsters swimming laps. Special thanks to the many people who helped keep the vision alive.

FE ATURE : TA - DA ! KIDZ FITNES S BOUTIQUE

Your One Stop Shop for Children’s Activities! BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

L

OOKING FOR A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN SEND YOUR KIDS FOR AFTER school activities, school breaks and summer camp, and have your next birthday party? Look no further than Ta-Da! Kidz Fitness Boutique. This 4,000 square foot, air conditioned facility is full of fun and safe activities the whole family can enjoy. Local owner and director, Jennifer Austin, has taught kids gymnastics, creative movement and various fitness activities for over 15 years. Her teaching experience, along with her passion for hosting and planning children’s birthday parties, led to the creation of Ta-Da!. The perfect combination of all things she loves to do, Austin opened the facility with a goal “to create a one stop shop for parents looking for activities for their children.” Included in Ta-Da!’s wide range of services are several different types of weekly after-school classes. One of Ta-Da!’s specialities, Fit-Nastics, is their “cool twist on gymnastics.” Taught by USAG certified gymnastics instructors, Fit-Nastics is offered for ages 3-10 and teaches all the fundamentals of gymnastics on floor, beam, bars, tramp and vault. Students work on building strong core strength, fostering developmental skills from bilateral coordination, posture, and stability to balance and endurance. The class also incorporates fun warm-ups, yoga stretches, obstacle courses, strength training and more. Other after-school activities offered include Tae Kwon Do, a martial arts program teaching the physical techniques of traditional Tae Kwon Do and self-defense, Creative Art, and Homework Club. For those with children who are looking for a morning activity, Ta-Da! offers a Parent & Tot class for children aged 18 months – 3 years. These classes are fun, educational and exciting for both parent and child, incorporating fun warm-ups, obstacle courses, gymnastics, yoga stretches, music and story time. Offering custom-themed birthday parties and play dates, the fun at Ta-Da! continues through the weekend as well. “We work along side the parent to make their child’s special day fun for both parent and child,” says Austin. With services from invitations to party favors, Ta-Da! takes care of all the details from start to finish. Choose from one of many birthday party themes like Pirate and Princess, Super Hero, Gymnastics, Rock Star and more. Each two hour party is full of fun and exciting activities beginning with guests enjoying the indoor play area upon arrival, and then followed with an hour in the gymnastics room, which includes exciting games, music, bounce house, zip line and more. The facility also has a large party room to enjoy food and cake. Even if they’re not celebrating a birthday, parents can still arrange to have a private 2 hour play-date at Ta-Da!. Activities include a fun warm up and stretch with Ta-Da!’s USAG certified coaches, group games and relay races, time to explore the gym safely through a giant obstacle course which includes a bounce house and trampoline, and of course, time on the zip line. While the 28

kids play, parents and friends can enjoy their time socializing. With the purchase of their beverage bar, guests also have unlimited access to their Keurig® coffee machine, iced water and lemonade or iced tea. Snacks are also available for the children. Ta-Da! takes care of all the set-up, clean-up and entertainment. Play dates are great for groups of friends, holiday parties, class parties and family get togethers. While it is a great place to have fun, Ta-Da! isn’t just a location for kids to play. It is also a place to keep kids healthy and fit. “With child obesity on the rise, finding a fun fitness activity for your child is even more important,” says Austin. “Whether a child is here for a gymnastics class or a play date, we want to make sure the kids leave Tada! feeling great about themselves,” she adds. Ta-Da! programs are designed to help any child improve mentally, socially and physically with a number one goal being to build each child’s self-esteem while improving their physical and mental strength in a fun and safe environment. Offering qualified coaching in a non-competitive setting, Ta-Da! strives to keep the fun without the pressure. “There is so much stress on kids these days, we want to provide parents a place where kids can learn stress free,” Austin says. Ta-Da! Kidz is located at 8830 SW 129th Terrace, Miami, FL 33176. Call 786.227.6753 or visit www.tadakidz.com for more information on classes, camps and parties. LOC AL POLITIC S

Local Businessman Runs for Council BY DANA BASTIEN

S

ELF-MADE LOCAL BUSINESSMAN DAVID ZISMAN HAS THROWN HIS HAT IN the ring for Palmetto Bay Village Council, Seat 1. Zisman, owner of Evening’s Delight Fireplaces & BBQ Grills, owns and operates two popular stores in South Florida. We caught up with the dynamic businessman at his South Dade, store to ask him some questions about his candidacy.

a r o f Time

e g n Cha

Why have you chosen to run for Palmetto Bay Village Council?

I am passionate about my community and I believe that we can dramatically improve our Village government. I have campaigned door-to-door over the last several months and the message from our residents is loud and clear: Palmetto Bay residents want change. It is time to do better in Palmetto Bay. We must adopt a new attitude and do the public’s business differently and better. Palmetto Bay is a great place to live and work, and I’m going to make it better. My job is to make Palmetto Bay a better place than when I found it.

What qualifications do you bring to the table for the Village Council?

As a local businessman and owner of Evenings Delight, I have the broad financial experience, real world business skills, and hands-on leadership qualities necessary to effectively deal with complex Village issues. The business world is the real world, and I intend to apply my hard-earned lessons, which have earned me success, to the Village government. While campaigning, I have met many hundreds of Palmetto Bay residents. I understand the concerns of the residents of Palmetto Bay. When I am elected in November, I can immediately begin working on the issues that concern Palmetto Bay residents.

What is your election platform?

My platform is simple: to make the council more business-like and responsive to our community. But more specifically, I pledge to hold the line on taxes and to implement a government that we can afford. As a businessman and a fiscal conservative, I believe that the Village government is currently living beyond its means. I want transparency in our government. I am going to have all our contracts and bills posted on line so that the residents can see how the council spends their money. I pledge to improve our police services through the latest technology. Did you know that our Police Officers don’t have basic equipment like mobile finger print readers in their patrol cars? This can lead to releasing criminals back on the street because they were not properly identified. I pledge to make our parks system the best in Florida. Most importantly, I pledge to improve the quality of life of all Palmetto Bay residents.

One of the criticisms leveled at politicians is that when they are elected, they forget about the public that elected them. How will you be accessible to Palmetto Bay residents once elected?

I’m glad you asked that. My business, as you know, is local. I am available at my store on US1 & 96 St anytime. My business has become a sort of “mini village hall.” For years, residents have stopped by and talked to me about our Village and their problems. It has been a pleasure to do everything that I can to help them. I encourage all residents to call me anytime and let me know how I can help them. My cell number is 786-236-9893.

Any final remarks?

I am prepared to lead our community. I have served on the Palmetto Bay Charter Review Committee and I was appointed to serve as Chairman of the Planning and Architecture committee for Palmetto Bay. I want to help and to serve. We can do better. It is time to do better. Your readers can learn more at www.votezisman.com.

When is the election?

The election is November 4th.

Thank you, we wish you the best of luck and success in your campaign. To Advertise in The Florida Villager, Please call 786-505-1817

WHAT’S NE W IN RE A L ESTATE

Buying or Selling: The Advantage of Working with an Experienced Professional BY ELENA KEMPER, EWM REALTY

I

T’S SAFE TO SAY WE HAVE ALL BEEN FACED WITH DIFficult choices or situations, and have found ourselves wishing there was someone to help. Fortunately, in matters of buying and selling property, there are realtors who have dedicated their effort and careers to mastering their craft. Having the right support in your corner can save you time, money, and

a lot of energy. One of the biggest hurdles in successfully closing a real estate transaction is the appraisal. Unless the transaction involves an all cash buyer, a home appraisal is not mandatory, although it certainly should be suggested. For the average buyer in Miami, which in case you are wondering accounts for about 40% of transactions, the appraisal can play a huge part in the deal. Currently, Lenders are facing perhaps the most rigid set of guidelines in recent history. They work with independent appraisal management companies to conduct the ever important task of determining the property’s value. Translation: correctly pricing a home and making offers are critical. It is important to make sound decisions, which means not getting caught up in the hype of the market. Understanding market fluctuations and the local area are important; a good realtor knows how well a neighborhood holds its value. Anyone can spend a few minutes online and pull information on sales of comparable homes, but experience can bring assets to the table that come from years of watching waves of transactions in the neighborhood. When it comes to inspections, one of the most important factors is selecting the right

company to work with. We’ve all heard the saying: it’s not what you know, it’s who you know, right? That could not be more true here. A good independent home inspector will provide a detailed report on problems with the house. Equally important, a good realtor will know how to read the 30+ page report and will boil it down to the simplest terms, what’s important for you. A real estate agent will be able to identify trouble that you may not see. Within all those pages, some problems are important and others aren’t. Whether buying or selling, your agent will have a good sense of what’s reasonable to request and what’s excessive. Often, the touchiest part of a real estate purchase involves the delicate dance of handling repairs. Outside of these two major factors there are many others, though maybe not as substantial, they are each still equally important. Knowledge of zoning, permitting and code compliance, title issues, and homeowner’s insurance are just a few examples. A good realtor will be able to foresee or identify any potential road blocks early on, before they get in the way of a successful closing. The real challenge is bringing all the components together to find a common ground for both parties. At the end of the day, something is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay. Both buyer and seller have to feel comfortable with the way the transaction is going for it to close successfully. The role of a professional realtor is to make ends meet without cutting any corners or stepping on any toes. Elena Kemper is a realtor in Miami with 30 years of experience. Ranked in the top ½% of Realtors nationally, Elena specializes in providing exceptional service to clients, both selling and buying properties.

HEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE COMMUNITY AND THE PEOPLE AMONG US living their day-to-day lives – attending school fundraisers, promoting local business, or even volunteering – the first person that comes to mind is probably a neighbor, maybe a friend, or the parent of a student in your child’s class. Youth group leaders, doctors, teachers, yoga instructors, mostly just regular people who have found their niche in the community and aim to tailor it to the needs of those communing around them. Little do we know, celebrities live within our community, too. Unexpected, yes, but sometimes more effective at helping our community reach its full potential. Flo Rida, as he is known, an American rapper native to Miami Gardens is still a South Florida local and loves it (to no surprise). He is famous for his talents as a musician, however, unbeknownst to what I’m sure is a great part of the nation he is also a humanitarian. The Big Dreams for Kids Foundation is an organization originally founded by Flo Rida. Big Dreams is dedicated to the improvement of the lives of underprivileged youth by means of education, family enrichment, and team sports. Florida Youth Football League (FYFL) is an organization of a similar function, which the rapper created in hopes of providing another form of support to children and teens with limited access to enrich- Flo Rida receives the key to the city. ment programs. The organizations were intended to provide a healthy outlet for inner-city kids and grant them an escape from hardship, not only to enrich their daily lives, but also to do so constructively. Flo Rida believes in dreaming big, it’s what made him what he is today – an inspiration to youth all around the nation (and especially South Florida) to dream as big and ambitiously as he did. The way he puts it, he used to be one of those kids, and so it seems only fair to show them just how successful they can be if they simply continue to dream. Since commanding such a large presence in the South Florida community, Flo Rida was granted the first-ever key to the City of Miami Gardens. Presented to the rapper by Mayor Oliver Gilbert on June 3rd, 2014, the gesture was a symbol of gratitude, specifically for Flo’s local accomplishments, and for his continued dedication to preparing South Florida youth for success through FYFL and Big Dreams for Kids. It’s an easy thing to start a movement, but to become a part of it takes a greater effort – the rapper has planted seeds within the Miami-Dade community, but he intends to stick around to watch them grow and prosper. Flo Rida still lives locally, and spends his time at hangouts like LIV, eating at Prime 112 or Nobu, and supporting our one and only Miami Heat. Life After High School Band BY PENNY DANIELS

HAT DO YOU THINK THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE HAVE IN COMMON? »» Julia Roberts, Actress »» Drew Carey, Actor, Comedian »» Walter Payton, NFL Hall of Fame Running Back »» Neil Armstrong, First Man on the Moon »» Bill Clinton, Former U.S. President »» Stephen Tyler, Lead Singer, Aerosmith »» Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, Singer What are their similarities? Well, we know they are all famous, they are all celebrities, they have all made an impact in various ways, and we know their names are recognizable by several generations. But, are there other hidden similarities? Do they have similar family backgrounds? Do they have similar birth order – first born, middle child, or baby of the family? When we Googled this group of individuals and asked what they had in common, one answer on the list was they all played a musical instrument in their high school band. Who would have guessed that playing a musical instrument in high school would be a common thread amongst this high profile group of people? The instruments they played included the flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, drums, trumpet… to name just a few. But the instrument itself didn’t influence their life, it’s the lessons they learned as a band member that may have prepared them for their future careers. At a young age, these individuals along with fellow classmates, came together to make music. They had the opportunity to form friendships, learn to read and play music, learn how to work with others and be part of a team, learn how to practice with determination and commitment, and learn how Former President Bill Clinton playing his saxophone. to be a leader. They soon learned that band wasn’t just for geeks and the unpopular. Did their experience in their high school band help them become the celebrities they are today? Dementia in Pets BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN

M

S. SMITH BROUGHT FLUFFY FOR AN EXAM - “DOC, MY old buddy Fluffy is not doing so well. For the last few months, he wakes up in the middle of the night pacing and panting. I don’t know what the problem is. I take him outside to do his thing and then I pet him until he calms down and goes to sleep. I can’t take it anymore. I need my sleep.” Sound familiar? Many owners of older pets might find themselves dealing with age related problems that were unheard of when they were growing up with the family pet. The facts is that, thanks to the advances in veterinary medicine, improved diets, and improved pet care by owners, our pets are living longer than ever. Nowadays, cats and dogs in their late teens are quite common. This leaves pet owners with the responsibility of managing the conditions related to the natural aging process of our pets. These conditions are seen at the organ level (ex. kidney insufficiency), skeletal level (ex. arthritis), sensory level (ex. deafness), and brain level (ex. senility). The signs of the normal aging of the brain are perhaps less obvious since it involves a decline of mental processes that cannot be directly observed, such as memory, capacity to learn, awareness, and perception. When that loss of cognitive capacity is beyond what is expected in the normal aging process, then it is called dementia or Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS). In dementia, the cognitive deficits of your dog or cat are so severe that it affects the social functioning of the pet. Animal dementia is seen in 50% of dogs and cats older than 15. Not every pet is affected, so it’s suspected that there might be a genetic basis for its development. Pet dementia or CDS is comparable with the Alheizmer type of dementia in humans. It is so common in pets that many pet insurance companies cover it. But what causes this brain condition? There are multiple changes simultaneously occurring in the brain that lead to dementia. These include degeneration of the white matter in the brain, amyloid deposition on nerve cells (this is a type of protein), changes in the vascularity of the brain, thickening of the meninges (the covering membranes of the brain), and a decrease in the number of neurotransmitters. It is important that you are in tune with your older pet, since dementia is diagnosed based on owner’s observations and by ruling out medical conditions that can display similar symptoms. If you suspect your pet might be suffering from dementia, it’s important to take your pet to the doctor to undergo a comprehensive exam, including blood evaluation and x-rays to rule out other disorders that might mimic dementia. The signs of dementia or CDS are behavioral in nature. You may notice your pet shows periods of disorientation (“Fluffy, what are you doing standing in the middle of the living room all by yourself?”), shows decreased energy, interacts less with the family, is more irritable, forgets learned behaviors (such as house training), has disturbed sleeping patterns, and episodes of anxiety in the middle of the night. Your pet may show only one sign or a combination of a few of them. The good news is that even though there is no cure for dementia, pets with this condition can have an acceptable quality of life if the owner, together with a veterinarian, are committed to managing the condition. It is important to modify the pet’s environment to enrich and stimulate the senses. In other words, take your pet out to explore different, new environments even if it means just going to different sections of your garden. Stimulate the senses by exposing your older pet to calming music, which has been shown through research to have multiple benefits. Touch and pet your older dog or cat in a rhythmic, calming way frequently in order to provide tactile stimulus. Make sure to provide regular controlled exercise; not only does it improve the musculoskeletal system, but also helps maintain a healthy cardio condition in your older pet. If there is advanced arthritis, walking to and from the mail box two to three times a day will be sufficient. Increase how much your pet socializes. Bring him or her to family gatherings, keep your pet close when watching TV or playing with your iPad, keep other younger pets with the older one so he or she does not feel left behind. Don’t forget to teach new tricks also. Older pets can learn new tricks even if it takes a little longer to learn. A diet for cognitive dysfunction can be prescribed by your veterinarian. They contain a combination of certain antioxidants and fatty acids that have been proven to slow down To Advertise in The Florida Villager, Please call 786-505-1817

the development and progression of dementia in pets in scientific trials. Lastly, certain medications such as Selegiline have been shown to decrease the signs of dementia in severely affected pets. Our aging pets deserve to be treated with respect and dignity in their later years. It is our duty to manage their age related disorders as they develop, just as we managed their puppyhood problems. Aging is not a disease; it’s a process of life. As long as our older pet has the capacity to enjoy the little things, it is our duty to help them maintain an acceptable quality of life. O

VER THE PAST 30 YEARS, ONE OF THE MOST FREQUENT questions I get asked by parents is: What is the right age for my daughter to start ballet class? My answer is always the same…When she asks for it. After dedicating my life to teaching ballet, I would never want to set an age when one should start dancing. I have several dancers at my studio in South Mexico that are six and seven years old, and they are not yet ready for the discipline of a class environment. Yet, I have been pleasantly surprised by girls as young as 2 years old, that act very mature and focused in class. Boys typically express interest a little bit later in life, and as a result, act more mature in the class environment. Dance class is one of the most unique and fulfilling experiences for a girl, and should be all about the movement of the body to music. Our close relationship with movement starts very early, even as newborns. It is important that your child is happy with the entire experience, and is willing to spend an average of 45 minutes with her new teacher and classmates. If she seems apprehensive at first, this is ok… you can stay outside and watch the class (if possible) to allow her time to take it all in. As a Mom, you can always try a ‘Mommy and Me’ class, so you can participate with your child. One of the most challenging aspects of dancing at this age can be the student’s ability to replicate the movements of a teacher with their own body, since this involves notions of rhythm, gross and fine motor coordination, concentration and even math. Because they need to learn how to count the steps along with the music, even math is involved! As a parent, you should explain to your child that the teacher is going to decide whether or not they are ready to start dancing, and to follow the teacher’s instructions and movements at all times. It is also very important not to push your child initially, as some of them are ready and immediately take to the commitment, while some of them need more time to embrace everything about dance and the class experience. Classical Ballet starts with the first lesson, and every child differs in how and when they know they are ready for the experience. As soon as your little one expresses interest in dance, start looking for a dance studio that has qualified and experienced teachers, and ask if the studio offers a test class so that your child can try it out to gauge their interest. On the day of class, try to be the first to arrive, to allow your child time to get acquainted with the teacher and to get familiar with the new studio environment. For the first class, simple is better. A plain black or pink leotard with tights and slippers, full sole leather, is fine. We don´t want them to be distracted by a shiny tutu. After the first lesson, talk with the teacher and get their thoughts about your child… were they attentive, did they seem happy during the lesson, and are they ready for this at this time? If the answer is no, don’t be disappointed. Let them stay in touch with ballet by watching it and learning about it. Wait two or three months and simply try again. If they are ready, however, welcome to the wonderful world of Ballet! Miss Gaby is now devoted to her research on Pointe Shoe Fittings to decrease the rate of injuries in Ballerina’s feet. She is a member of the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS). Gaby keeps files and statistics from more than 3,000 ballerinas all over the world. Gables Pizza and Salad: Not Your Typical Italian Restaurant BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

G

REAT FOOD, SERVED WITH A SMILE, FOR A small price. This is Gables Pizza and Salads (GPS) in a nutshell. After 25 years in the restaurant business, Miguel Bermudez opened GPS in 2009 with a simple formula of classic pizza and pasta along with delicious salads. “It’s a unique concept,” said Bermudez. “We combine your favorite junk food with healthy food.” With a degree from Le Cordon Bleu Culinary College in Miami, where he graduated Cum Laude, and a background including positions at restaurants varying from Ruth’s Chris to Beverly Hills Café, Bermudez had the desire to expand on his health food background with salads and his love of pizza. After finding a great location set up for pizza, he purchased equipment to add in his salad creations, and the rest was history. GPS’s large salads are very popular, as evidenced by a demand for them all day and night. With a design-your-own salad concept, guests can select a 4, 6, or 12 topping salad and choose from over 70 toppings and proteins. Toppings include fresh vegetables, fruits, cheeses, and items to add a little crunch like tortilla strips, trail mix, pita chips, and crispy noodles. Protein choices consist of the typical turkey, ham, and tuna, and the not so typical, such as meatballs. Top your salad off with a choice from several homemade salad dressing offerings, including a few fat free options. Finalize your order by having it either tossed or chopped.

If you need a little inspiration, GPS has over 15 precreated salads on their menu, including a few favorites such as the “Taco Salad,” which includes pico de gallo, guacamole, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, black beans, and tri-colored tortillas, and the “Nutty Apple,” which includes apples, candied walnuts, grapes, raisins, peanuts, and craisins. Any salad can alternatively be made into a wrap, with a choice of 5 different types of tortillas. With something for everyone, GPS also offers more than your typical Italian fare. Pizza is available by the pie or the slice. One of the most popular specialty pies off the menu, is the famous “Abuelita’s Margarita,” which includes ricotta cheese, alfredo, mozzarella cheese, fontina cheese, fresh mozzarella, parmesan, tomatoes and basil. Another unique pizza selection is the Pizzagna, which is made with your choice of veggie or beef combined with GPS’s ricotta cheese blend and their pizza cheese blend. Or, if you’re looking for something custom, create your own pie with either regular or honey wheat crust, and a choice of various toppings. Oven baked Italian sandwiches are also offered including eggplant or chicken parmesan, as well as a large selection of pasta dishes, including a special twist on the classic mac and cheese. If after all of that you still have room for dessert, ask about the sugar rolls! Gables Pizza and Salads is located at 1558 South Dixie Highway, Coral Gables, FL 33146. UMMER DAYS ARE OVER. FOOTBALL SEASON HAS STARTED. A NEW SCHOOL year has begun. As heads of families, we pride ourselves on being responsible providers for the comfort and necessities of our loved ones. This responsibility includes, naturally, a readiness for accidents and unforeseen events. Whether our young ones are starting the first grade, or they are off to their freshman year in college, our diligence as guardians of their safety remains the same, and during school hours, it is shared with school officials. Perhaps now is a good time to raise our consciousness about school safety guidelines and available resources: All schools should maintain a comprehensive checklist and plans that contain safety policies and procedures addressing prevention, intervention, all-hazard or crisis response and, naturally, post-crisis recovery. To promote awareness and raise the alert, the plans should include provisions for assisting and communicating with students and staff, with particular attention to those with special needs. A sound school safety plan should require the building principal to be certified on the County’s Incident Command System (ICS), and the plan should observe the possibility that school facilities may be used as a community asset in the event of a communitywide emergency. To be effective, schools should conduct safety-related drills monthly and participate in larger exercises annually with local law enforcement agencies and emergency responders. Of note, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) offers funding, training, and resources for emergency preparedness, training school bus drivers in security and hardening school buildings’ vulnerability. DHS also maintains the National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP), which issues reports titled Characteristics and Common Vulnerabilities, Potential Indicators of Terrorist Activity, and Protective Measures for K-12 schools and higher education institutions. Other guidance is also available from the US Secret Service and Department of Education through the Safe School Initiative, and from the Transportation Security Agency for school bus drivers, administrators, and staff members, with a focus on terrorist and criminal threats to buses. These and other resources are available to local law enforcement and school officials to help identify site-specific vulnerabilities, anomalies, or incidents that may precede a harmful incident, and certain measures that can be taken to better protect and create a safer environment. In fact, school security grants are available through www.grants.gov. Locally, the MDPD Homeland Security Bureau rolled out the pilot program Helping Emergency Responders Operate (HERO) to allow first responders to view live streaming video feeds directly onto computers and smart phones while handling emergencies. The project includes Miami-Dade County Public Schools as test venues for the program. On August 6, Chief of Police Ian Moffett conducted a functional drill at the South Dade Skills Center in Homestead, FL, in order to familiarize and assess school staff, police, and fire rescue personnel with crisis management in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Attendees learned about school lockdown and evacuation procedures, timing by Police and Fire Rescue when responding to an incident, and how the ICS controls a situation. Finally, mark your calendars: On Saturday, October 11th, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Palmetto Bay PD will host the 1st Annual Safety and Security Fair at the Village Hall, 9705 E. Hibiscus Street, Palmetto Bay, FL. This educational event will highlight different aspects of home security (indoor, outdoor, and pool), vehicle and bicycle safety, Citizen Crime Watch, a poisonous snakes presentation by Venom One, and even a smokehouse by MD Fire Department, with food trucks and many other learning activities for kids. As the daily hustle and bustle returns, we should stop to consider how prepared we are for the ensuing risks and contingencies of a new school year. Participating in community education events sharpens our practical awareness, while examining our schools’ readiness raises our confidence in their ability to safeguard our children. Think about it, fellow Guardians, would you have it any other way? Luis Ortega is a Certified Firearms Instructor. He owns and operates Security Arms International (SAI), a personal defense store and security consulting firm in the Village of Palmetto Bay, Florida. You may reach him at (305) 253-7600, ceo@saiops.com, or at the Safety and Security Fair on October 11th. To Advertise in The Florida Villager, Please call 786-505-1817

IT’S THEIR BUSINES S

Rock On Stage and In Life BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

B

ACK IN JULY, SCHOOL OF ROCK SPOKE TO US ABOUT ITS UPCOMING BATTLE of the Bands. During the Battle, its two teams proudly made it to finals for their second year in a row. We recently followed up with School of Rock to see how the rest of their summer went and to hear what is in store for the upcoming year.

HOW ARE YOUR SUMMER CAMPS CLOSING OUT?

The Season Final Shows will be held at the Open Stage Club in Coral Gables. We have two Summer Season Bands this year who have been rehearsing since May. The dates for these shows are Saturday and Sunday, September 20th and 21st. Both dates are doublebill shows from 2:00 to 6:00 pm. The themes are Psychedelic Rock and Top 10 Hits.

WHAT TYPES OF PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED DURING THE YEAR AT SCHOOL OF ROCK?

The Performance Program at School of Rock has two levels. The introductory level is called Rock-101. Rock-101 meets on Tuesdays and Saturdays and has open enrollment. It is an extremely beginner-friendly class for students aged 7-17. We also have themed bands called Show Bands. The Show Bands have an enrollment period which starts in September when we cast all the songs for a show in January. We are currently in a voting phase where students are choosing their favorite themes. The front running ideas are Indie Rock, Heavy Metal and Rock Solo Artists. The Rock Solo Artist Show will be directed by our vocal teacher Jessie Chirino, the daughter of Willie Chirino, a Cuban Salsa Music superstar who has played all over the world.

WHEN PARTICIPATING IN A PROGRAM, DO STUDENTS ROTATE THROUGH THE INSTRUMENTS OR SELECT JUST ONE?

Students often rotate instruments in our programs. The rehearsals are great opportunities for students to try something new and get outside their comfort zone. We’re almost always looking for more bass players and keyboardists, so there are more opportunities if the guitarists and drummers can switch it up.

ARE THERE ANY TRADITIONAL LESSONS OFFERED AT SCHOOL OF ROCK?

Instrument Lessons are one-on-one, private instruction. They are 45 minutes long and occur weekly. These lessons are only offered for students who are not interested in a band. For those students who want some private lessons, but who are also in a band, the group rehearsals are bundled with private lessons at a discounted rate.

WHAT ARE YOUR INSTRUCTORS’ BACKGROUNDS?

Marcel Salas is a Show director and Guitar/Bass teacher at the school who, in the past, has toured with Pitbull. Mark Kondrat is currently recording and touring with a Miami band called “Locos Por Juana.” Steph Taylor is a Camp Director and Instructor at the school who plays in a local band called “The State Of.” She is also currently playing in a Miami production by the Mad Cat Theater. Matt Tarto and Michael Hart attended the University of Miami. School of Rock is located at 8783 SW 132 Street, Miami, Florida 33176. Contact 305.969.2828 or visit www.miami.schoolofrock.com for program and enrollment information. Students who enroll before the end of September will receive 15% off their first two months tuition. HEN YOU THINK OF ANN ARBOR YOU THINK OF THE UNIVERSITY OF Michigan, but there is so much more afoot on the streets of this university town. Whether you are a Wolverine alum, parent of an incoming student, or just traveling in the vicinity of Ann Arbor, one must stop and explore this vibrant and eclectic midwestern community. First stop on my tour was Blimpy Burger, which is a landmark burger pit stop. Small in comparison to other burger haunts, but offering a seat in Ann Arbor history, it serves up its famous burgers in a sundry of ways and sizes. Exploring downtown with its outdoor dining, sidewalk cafes and unique shops was a lesson in self-control. Wandering down one of the side streets, I found myself in front of an old bookstore called West Side Book Shop, that dates back to 1888. Venturing in, I made my way through the labyrinth of books to a room where the sound of typewriter keys broke the heavy silence. “So sorry,” I whispered, as eyes looked my way. A smile crossed his face and for the next hour, as I sat on a small wooden stool amongst the old prints hanging on the wall, he shared his bookshop stories. Next, my travels brought me to a fabulously Outside the Michigan Theater. fun giftshop on Main Street called Rock Paper Scissors, then it was off to Cupcake Station, where you can choose from 21 varieties of cupcakes (hint, hint to moms of University of Michigan students) and then Michigan Theater, a grand old theatre, built in 1928 with its opulent gold staircase rounded out my walkabout. Making my way back into the center of town, the music from one of the bistros lured me into lingering just a bit longer before my watch told me I should go. A short drive away in Chelsea is the Purple Rose Theater. Founded in 1991 by Chelsea native and actor, Jeff Daniels, the theater is his vision of a company that develops acting opportunities for Michigan theatre professionals. Grabbing a bite at Conor O’Neill’s Irish Pub was enchanting. This pub was designed and built in Ireland. The menu is authentic Irish fare with the flour to make their bread being imported from Ireland. Captivating my palate were The Grange, The Earle that offered French and Italian Purple Rose Theatre - Corktown. Country cooking, Vinology with its fine wine tastings, Mani Osteria Bar where you are treated to a sundry of “sharing plates,” and Frita Batidos which offers Cuban food like you will never have in Miami. Visiting Motawi Tile was a learning experience. I had no idea how tiles were made, The typical line out the door of Zingerman’s Deli.

and found the tour quite interesting. I got to see first hand people working at different stages of the tile making process. Each tile is handmade and the selection and design of Nawal Motawi’s tiles are very impressive. Her tiles are made with local clays and glazes using her own recipes for colors. There was a stop at well-known Zingerman’s Deli and Morgan and York, both specialty food stores that have everything imaginable for the discerning palate. Afternoon activities included lunch at Mark’s Carts and a visit to The Brinery, where I was treated to one of David Klibenberger’s workshops on fermenting. His store is one of many of the area’s local shops and specializes in brine-fermented sauerkraut, kimchi and pickles, which are hand mixed, no machines allowed. Microbreweries, which make up an important part of the food scene in Ann Arbor, were next on my circuit. Pacing yourself is an art that you need to acquire sooner than later. Don’t ask me how I know this. Antiquing was fun at Materials Unlimited, Schmidt’s Antiques and Salt City Antiques, and kayaking on the Huron River brought me to a place of peacefulness I hadn’t felt in a long time. As I kayaked down the river, I couldn’t help but think how lucky I was to stumble across such an amaz- One of the numberous micro-breweries ing place as Ann Arbor. Why Regular Roof Maintenance Is a Must for Your Florida Home BY FRANK ISTUETA, OWNER, ISTUETA ROOFING

Y

OUR HOME IS TYPICALLY YOUR LARGEST SINGLE investment. And the roof of your home is quite possibly the most important part of your house. The lifespan and protective value of your roof is directly related to its condition and the quality of its maintenance. Think about it - a roof is a lot like a car. If you don’t perform regular maintenance on it, your car’s life expectancy decreases significantly and won’t hold its value. Most homeowners anticipate that their new roofing systems will last 20 to 25 years. But in the real world, those roofs are lasting maybe 10 to 15 years, and sometimes fewer than that. This is primarily because homeowners are not aware that they should include routine maintenance and inspection of their home’s roof into their budgets. Spending money to maintain your roof should be regarded as an important investment, not an unnecessary expense. Yes, cost of maintenance can be an initial concern for some homeowners. But one thing that is for certain is that replacing a roof will always be more costly than maintaining one. Remember, “An ounce of

prevention is worth a pound of cure.” There are several things that can cause roof deterioration: »» Normal wear; »» Severe weather conditions; »» Building movement (settling); »» Improper design, construction and maintenance. Proper maintenance prevents water damage that could lead to interior problems or structural issues, and a good roof maintenance plan maximizes the life of your roof and your peace of mind.

What are the benefits of our Platinum Client Maintenance Program?

With Istueta Roofing’s Platinum Client Maintenance Program, you don’t have to think about your roof maintenance, because we do that for you! We will inspect and clean your roof at least twice every year - once before hurricane season and once after. That way we can ensure that your roof is ready for the impending storms before they arrive and then check to determine what damage may have occurred after the hurricane season has ended. While we’re up there, we’ll clean the gut-

ters and remove any debris that has built up in the valleys. We’ll also make sure that everything is still water-tight and that there are no broken tiles or failures in accessories. Because homeowners rarely go up on their roof, they really have no idea what’s happening up there, so any damage that occurs can build on itself. As with most things in life, it’s better to take a proactive approach with your roof rather than a reactive one. In addition to routine maintenance and cleaning, our Platinum Client Maintenance Program members have priority status when emergencies occur. This is especially helpful during hurricane season because every homeowner who experiences damage will be clambering to have his or her roof repaired first. You, however, will have priority and be put at the top of our list. The bottom line is that homeowners need to rethink the old “out of sight, out of mind” attitude when it comes to their major investment overhead. The importance of maintaining a quality roof cannot be overlooked. If you’d like more information regarding our Platinum Client Maintenance Program, give us a call today! Istueta Roofing, South Florida’s Most Trusted Roofer Since 1985, can be reached at 305.671.9625 or online at www.istuetaroofing.com.

THE MINDFUL DI VORCÉE

Let the Healing Begin BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH

I

RECENTLY RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM A WOMAN WHO RECOUNTED a scenario all too familiar to me, so I decided to address it in this month’s column. Here is her email and my response.

Debbie, I am writing in the hope that you can shed some understanding as to why a person I believed was the love of my life would treat me in such a hurtful way. We dated for 2 years and then because of outside circumstances, broke up. He immediately took up with another woman but continued to play with my emotions by telling me that I was the love of his life, that he didn’t know how to get out of the relationship because he didn’t want to hurt her, that he can’t stop thinking of me, misses me and blah blah blah. He made it appear that he was stuck in this loveless relationship with her, that she even knew he still loved me and they had spoken many times of breaking up. This continued for 4 years. I admit I tried to move on but I was still very much in love with him and held out hope he would reconcile all that he needed to within himself and come back. Well, long story short, he got found out by his girlfriend and she contacted me. What I read in the 2 days of us emailing left me wondering where did the truth end and the lies begin with all that he told me. I’ve been walking around in a fog for days asking, “Who is this man?” and “What kind of person plays with people to this degree?” How could he hurt not just me but his girlfriend like this? I never would have suspected this; I feel like such a fool. Cindy (name has been changed)

Cindy, He is a narcissist, and to be betrayed by someone like this can really mess with your head. The fact that you never suspected doesn’t surprise me, as narcissists are master manipulators and can be whoever they need to be at the moment as long as it benefits them. Unfortunately, they have no conscience and think nothing of playing with others emotions, they lack guilt, remorse, are very persuasive and feel entitled. Their relationships are usually marked with infidelity and their needs are always number one. They are in a relationship because that person serves a purpose, not for love, since narcissists are incapable of genuine emotion. As much as it hurts, he kept playing the “game” with you because you boosted his ego, which is something they need constantly. They are a group of individuals with issues and maladaptive coping skills. Their life is about feeling good even at the expense of others. Please don’t feel like a fool because the behavior of a narcissist is so inconceivable to most that it isn’t even on our radar. It is so bizarre and maladaptive, it is beyond a “normal” person’s reasoning. Be thankful that what was created in the dark, has now come out in the light. Moving forward, ask yourself, “Does this person’s words match his actions?” If the answer is “No”, don’t second guess yourself or make excuses for him; if a man wants to be with you and loves you that much, he will find a way. I’m sure looking back now, things that didn’t make sense to you have become clearer; the puzzle pieces fit. Be liberated by this “blessing” and put this guy in your rearview mirror fast. If he thinks you are a game, show him how it’s played by walking away with dignity and having no further contact with him. Let the healing begin. T WAS TWO DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS AND OUR 11 MONTH old daughter had the flu. She was running around, playing, and seemed pretty happy for a kid with a 101 degree fever, and then we changed her diaper. It was there on the changing table when her eyes rolled into the back of her head that she started seizing. Her jaw was clenched tight, and we couldn’t tell if she was breathing. I called 911 and had my neighbor, who is a registered nurse, come to help with CPR until the paramedics arrived. Those three minutes seemed like an eternity, as we were completely powerless to help our baby. We learned later at the hospital that her seizures were caused from the fever, called febrile seizures, and she was released. We made the decision that day to learn CPR, but unfortunately it took me another year to actually follow through, until I found One Beat CPR. This summer, One Beat CPR of Ft. Lauderdale held a CPR fundraiser for Turtle Power for James, to help the family of James Edwards. At 22-months-old, James Edwards nearly drowned after falling into a swimming pool on May 30, 2014. He was administered CPR until the paramedics arrived, but he still has quite a battle to fight to recover. One Beat CPR taught a CPR class at the Swamp at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, and the grandfather of James Edwards was in attendance to receive his CPR certification. According to Lon Rose, Owner of One Beat CPR, “Right now drowning is the leading cause of death of children under 8 years of age; it’s actually the number one killer of our children.” With school starting and more kids playing sports in the South Florida heat, it’s more important than ever for parents and caregivers to learn CPR. Children here in Miami also have an extended summer, which means at least two more months of swimming. It can happen to anyone; a toddler who wanders too close to the pool while someone grabs their phone, or a junior varsity football player who suffers heat stroke. The possibilities are endless, and tragedies can occur in the blink of an eye. Our only defense is preparation. Rose says, “When 911 is called, they are 4-6 minutes away in a perfect situation. When someone is in cardiac arrest or has stopped breathing, death to the brain and heart will set in. By doing CPR you are circulating the blood in the circulatory system, and keeping the brain alive.” If you would like to attend a course, One Beat CPR has a class schedule online at onebeatcpr.com, or they can come to you. Much like the fundraiser, they can perform mobile classes for your company, team, school, or family. For more information call 855-ONE-BEAT.
