Happy Holidays!

I

T IS HARD TO BELIEVE IT’S ALREADY TIME TO SAY GOODBYE to 2014 and welcome in a new calendar year. We’re very excited to see what 2015 has in store, but we would be remiss not to acknowledge how rewarding this year has been. We have formed amazing relationships with local businesses and individuals, and are glad to be able to call them friends. We’ve covered amazing events and been privileged to tell some incredible stories. We thank the community for all of the support, and will continue to work hard to make The Florida Villager the best it can be. December also means that the holiday season is in full swing. There are wonderful events taking place this month, and for a complete list, see our Events Calendar (page 8). One such event you can read about in the magazine is the Philip Haas Four Seasons display now being hosted at Pinecrest Gardens (page 12). Deering Estate at Cutler also has an exciting line-up of events for the entire family to enjoy this holiday season (page 38). If you’re considering getting a new puppy for the holidays, or deciding whether or not to travel with your pet, please see page 45 and 47 for great articles on the subject. We wish all of our readers a happy and healthy holiday season, and a very Happy New Year! We look forward to sharing 2015 with you! Sincerely,

This beacon commemorated the day in 1942 that the Virgin Mary appeared to her father at his home-based barbershop. Pinecrest Gardens hosts Philip Haas’s Four Seasons BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

P

INECREST GARDENS’ LUSH BOTANICAL SANCTUARY IS NOW PLAYING HOST to internationally-renowned contemporary artist and filmmaker Philip Haas’s acclaimed Four Seasons display. The exhibit, inspired by the 16th-century creations of Italian Renaissance painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo, will be on display for visitors from now until April 6, 2015. Consisting of four, three dimensional, 15-foot-tall busts, Haas’s Four Seasons brings Arcimboldo’s art into modern times through a transformation of scale, material and dimensionality. Each work represents an individual season and is distinctly unusual and extravagant. Autumn is comprised of fall vegetables, ripe grapes and leaves turning color. Weathered bark and verdant moss make up Winter, which sits on top of a cloak of straw. Spring evokes rebirth and vibrancy with a face consisting of rose-colored petals and hair brimming with elaborate flowers. Summer’s sun-kissed yellow hues complement its onions, garlic, corn, peas, fruit, and cucumber nose that make up the face. While Arcimboldo’s paintings present each subject in profile, Haas’s unconventional twist on the classical form allows visitors the opportunity to walk around the sculptures, to see the subjects from all sides and from many different vantage points. Installing the project was no simple task. Using a crane forklift and cherry picker, each 15-foot-tall sculpture was assembled starting with a steel infrastructure, then adding painted fiberglass skin, from bottom to top. During the installation of Winter, Rebecca Parkin, the team’s immensely strong, diminutive welder, assembled the sculpture from

inside, climbing out of a small hatch at the top, jumping into a basket on the cherry picker. “I started the Four Seasons project wanting to bring Arcimboldo’s Renaissance painted nature imagery into the 21st-century physical world,” said Haas. “I can’t think of a better venue than Pinecrest Gardens to inaugurate the Florida tour of this work, where the sculptures will arrive in the one of the oldest outposts of the New World, having fled their earlier homes as paintings in European museums, to now rest, and blend in, for an extended period amid the lush tropical flora, rock formations and historic water features,” he added. Pinecrest Gardens isn’t the only place in Miami to embrace artwork depicting the four seasons. This theme runs prominently through many of the important landmarks in Coral Gables, from the artwork that graces the domed ceiling at City Hall to the relief panels on the De Soto Fountain. The Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables, which raises funds for Coral Gables historic preservation projects, is helping to sponsor the Pinecrest Gardens exhibit. As for the artist himself, Haas is an academy award nominated filmmaker who became a contemporary artist after his acclaimed exhibition in the Kimbell Art Museum was listed by TIME magazine as one of the top ten museum shows of 2009. His groundbreaking artwork has been featured by museums, including the National Gallery of Art and the Kimbell Art Museum. In the public realm, his work has been exhibited in the Piazza del Duomo and the Gardens of Versailles. Pinecrest Gardens is located at 11000 Red Road, Pinecrest, Florida 33156.

Whispering Manes Hosts Fundraiser in Support of Therapeutic Riding Center for People with Disabilities and Veterans BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

I

N EARLY NOVEMBER, WHISPERING MANES THERAPEUTIC Riding Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing people with disabilities the ability to interact with dedicated therapy horses, hosted its 2nd Annual Shoe Fairies Garden Party. The party, co-chaired by Linda Peterson and Helen Picard, successfully attracted more than 100 attendees in an effort to raise funds to support equine-assisted therapy programs for hundreds of affected children and adults as well as local veterans returning from war with PTSD and social disabilities and challenges. The event raised thousands of dollars to support the programs of Whispering Manes, through a silent auction and private donations, as well as vendor fees. With a successful second year of the event, there are plans to continue it annually. Attendees of the party had the opportunity to bid on over 100 select items offered through a silent auction, as well as participate in an early holiday shopping event with local vendors. The afternoon also featured a fashion show courtesy of Cocoa Couture, nibbles and bites by Relish caterers, and a selection of wines, champagne, and a signature cocktail. Along with the 20 vendors who displayed their goods, FIU’s Honors College A Cappella singing group, the HEARTBeats, performed several songs, along with the FIU Honors College’s Jazz Quartet. FIU students also served as volunteers at the event. The Whispering Manes Therapeutic Riding Center is in its third full year of operation. Located in the heart of “Horse Country” in Miami-Dade County, its mission is to benefit children and adults with special needs or disabilities by offering them the

opportunity to interact with dedicated horses in a manner that promotes physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Through programs at Whispering Manes people can develop therapeutic relationships with horses, crossing boundaries of speech and physical disabilities in a way that encourages healing and improved self-esteem. The non-profit organization serves 38 to 43 riders per week ranging in age from 5 to over 70 years old. There are over 65 people enrolled in the equine assisted activities program, including veterans from the Veterans Administration Medical Center, participants from multiple local special education schools, the Down Syndrome Association of Miami, Miami Cerebral Palsy Sunset Residence, and private individuals. “Whispering Manes is so grateful to have such a phenomenal group of women in our community who are dedicated to supporting us and our therapeutic horseback riding programming,” said Director Erin Bauer, DVM. “The Shoe Fairies Garden Party was a wonderful success not only as a fundraiser to support Whispering Manes, but also to raise awareness of how Whispering Manes Therapeutic Riding Center helps people in our community with disabilities,” added Party Co-chair Helen Picard. Whispering Manes is located at 6208 SW 123rd Ave, Miami, FL 33183. For more information about the therapeutic services offered at Whispering Manes, or to donate online, please visit www.whisperingmanes.org.

S PART OF ART AT FAIRCHILD, THE SEASONAL PROGRAM THAT INVITES international artists to display their works throughout Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, renowned American artist Dale Chihuly will return to unveil his most comprehensive garden exhibition to date in Miami. Chihuly’s magnificent works of art will be installed throughout many of the Garden exhibits, including the lush Rainforest, sprawling Palm Collection, picturesque Bailey Palm Glade Vista, and the new Wings of the Tropics exhibit, where they will be surrounded by hundreds of colorful and exotic butterflies. The exhibition will be on view from December 6, 2014 – May 31, 2015. Uniting art with nature, luminous works of art will reflect off the surface of the palm-lined lakes for visitors to admire. Other works will be nestled next to the broadleaf plants and shimmering orchids of the continental U.S.’s only outdoor Rainforest exhibit and alongside stately cycads, palms and vibrant bromeliads. Likewise, bright water lilies will float beside the art in the Victoria Amazonica Pool. In addition to the outdoor landscape, the Chihuly Gallery will be located inside the Adam R. Rose and Peter R. McQuillan Arts Center. The opening of the Chihuly exhibition coincides with the opening the Arts Center, a 3,000-square-foot facility that Fire Orange Basket. will enrich Miami’s cultural renaissance with programs celebrating the fine arts. This will not be Chihuly’s first visit to the Garden. He previously exhibited work there during the 2005-2006 and 20062007 Art at Fairchild seasons. For this exhibition, though, the artist will debut new works of art that have never before been exhibited. Special art viewings will be held throughout the season, including Niijima Floats. night viewings and activities during Art Basel Miami Beach. With his distinctive designs, Chihuly is credited with revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement and elevating the perception of the glass medium from the realm of craft to fine art. He is renowned for his ambitious architectural installations around the world, in historic cities, museums and gardens. Chihuly’s work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide. The 2014-2015 Art at Fairchild season is sponsored by CBS4. Prices may vary for art-related events. N LINE WITH THEIR WIDESPREAD GREEN INITIATIVES, THE VILLAGE OF PINECREST won the 2014 Sustainable Florida Best Practices Award in the government category at the 17th Annual Best Practices Awards Ceremony held in October. This annual awards program is Sustainable Florida’s signature event. The awards are an example of state-level recognition for accomplishments and leadership in sustainable development and are a respected measure of best performance standards in the integration of environmental, social and economic factors for the long-term sustainability of Florida. The competition accepts nominations for seven categories: Small Business, Large Business, Government, Nonprofit, Green Building, Partnership, and Leadership. The government category included 13 other nominees consisting of counties, large municipalities and utilities from across Florida. Pinecrest is committed to minimizing the community’s impact on the environment through education and implementing sustainability initiatives in all facets of business, resident and government processes. In just six years, it has implemented various initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint that include, to name a few, the first free municipal electric vehicle fast charging station in Florida, green procurement, and adopting green regulations and sustainable building ordinances. The Village also commissioned a greenhouse emission gas and forecast report for municipal buildings, and residential and commercial areas to track emission reduction. “The totality of what we have accomplished makes us a leader in South Florida in making sustainability a priority,” said Mayor Cindy Lerner, who last month was named 2014 U.S. Green Building Council South Florida Chapter Most Outstanding Green Elected Official. Certified as a Silver Level sustainable city by the Florida Green Building Council, the Village has a long history of environmental sensitivity and activism, as a community and as a municipal government. In 2009, a Going Green Advisory Group was established as a forum to begin the process of information gathering and dissemination with regards to sustainability. As a result of the collective research efforts and numerous meetings, the group recommended the consideration of a Green Building Ordinance, Green Landscaping Regulations, Green Fleet Program, Green Purchasing, and Recycling initiatives at all of Pinecrest’s parks and the Municipal Center. Following this, the 2010 Strategic Plan established sustainability as one of six core values of the government and placed municipal focus on increased energy efficiency and sustainable growth management policies. Currently, the 2014 Climate Action Plan aims to set a baseline of where the Village is now as it pertains to environmental initiatives. This forwardthinking model developed by Village staff will measure environmental responsibility and accountability with long and short-term goals. Sustainable Florida is a unique alliance of business, government, higher education and citizen leaders committed to conserving Florida’s vast natural and economic resources. It advances the vision of sustainability by identifying, supporting and communicating best management practices - those which protect and preserve Florida’s environment while building markets for Florida’s businesses by enhancing their competitive advantages today. Palmetto Elementary and Middle Schools Take Strides Against Bullying BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

U

NFORTUNATELY, BULLYING HAS BECOME A PREVALENT PROBLEM IN schools across the country. South Florida is no different. As programs and initiatives pop up throughout the United States to try to address the issue, Palmetto Elementary School and students at Palmetto Middle School have taken action to address bullying first hand. This year, one of Palmetto Middle School’s Odyssey of the Mind teams has taken on a new project to further the cause against bullying. The team is made up of seven students including Sofia Vinueza, Andres Laventman, Leah Melendez, Maia Wenger, Nicholas Leyva, and Dylan Leyva, who are all 6th grade freshman at Palmetto Middle. Sofia, Andres, and Leah were part of Howard Drive’s team that won first place at the World Finals last year. During those competitions, the students learned about Odyssey Angels, a completely separate and optional program within Odyssey of the Mind that encourages individual teams to use their creativity to positively impact their community. Currently the youngest at their school, the seven Odyssey students felt that bullying needed more attention and chose to focus their efforts on raising awareness for this issue. “I think helping raise awareness about bullying in schools is a good way to get students to stop and think about their actions and prevent more people from getting hurt,” said team member Gabi Rousseau. Sharing the sentiment, team member Sofia Vinueza said, “I think a lot of bullying happens and people don’t even realize that it’s bullying! We hope that raising awareness will make more people think about their actions and prevent bullying.” The team has established three goals for their program. First, they hope to raise community and student awareness about the issue of bullying and make anti-bullying attractive. Second, the team wants to raise money for the No Place For Hate program to help

them in their efforts to combat bullying in the community. Finally, they aim to create a t-shirt that will raise awareness in a “cool” way to show that “bullying is cruel, not cool!” No Place for Hate is a program offered by the Anti-Defamation League. The initiative was developed to organize schools to work together and develop projects that enhance the appreciation of diversity and to foster harmony amongst diverse groups. The campaign empowers schools to promote respect for individual and group differences while challenging prejudice and bigotry. Profits from the Odyssey students’ t-shirt sales will be donated to No Place For Hate to allow them to continue providing more education and intervention in schools. The shirts can be purchased for $10 each. In order to comply with uniform requirements, the students have approached area schools and principals to have their new shirts approved as official school shirts. So

far, they have been approved for wear by Howard Drive Elementary, Pinecrest Elementary, Palmetto Elementary, Palmetto Middle School and Palmetto High School. “I hope that our efforts and people wearing our t-shirts will help people think twice about bullying,” said team member Maia Wenger. As for their participation in the Odyssey of the Mind competition, their coach, Gina Vinueza, believes they have already won. “Whether we make it to World Finals or not, I believe our team has learned the REAL lesson of Odyssey of the Mind; take what you’ve learned, your talents and your creativity and use it to make the world a better place,” she said. While the Palmetto Middle students have been working to sell t-shirts and raise funds, Palmetto Elementary School joined in the anti-bullying efforts by celebrating Peace Week. From October sixth through tenth, the school participated in a week-long parade of colors to show unity, cooperative games for recess, school-wide chalk drawings, cooking demonstrations, and more. Activities were designed to foster unity across the school, and a sense of kindness and understanding for the children to carry with them throughout the year. One central activity of the week was led by the Anti-Defamation League as part of Palmetto Elementary’s No Place for Hate program. The morning-long training, titled “Becoming An Ally,” was presented to a group of 30 fourth and fifth grade students. At this training, students explored the harms of name calling and bullying and developed and practiced skills to respond to incidents. The “allies” took the information back to their classes and shared tips for the whole school on the closed-circuit television morning announcements. “Opportunities like the ADL training are so valuable for our students,” noted Mrs.

Julie Astuto, Palmetto Elementary’s Counselor. “The children learn so much, but even more so when this information is given to them during a week when they are already focused on kindness and compassion, “she added. “These pieces all fit together to create a lasting impact.” The week capped off with a special assembly where a play depicting the book, “One,” by Kathryn Otoshi, a story about bullying and the importance of standing up for and helping a target of bullying, was acted out by a group of fifth grade students. Following the performance, Acacia Woodley, a 12-year-old girl who created the Friendship Bench program and kit, told her personal story of getting bullied and how she solved the problem. The Friendship Bench initiative seeks to provide a resource to children to work together to solve challenges. Five longtime Palmetto Elementary staff members who retired last year donated a Friendship Bench to Palmetto Elementary’s campus. The bench promotes empathy and kindness, and can also be used to solve problems. For example, if a child has no one to play with, he or she can sit on the bench, and when other children see this, they can go to the child to invite him or her to play, or to find out what is wrong. “The Friendship Bench is an important addition to our school,” remarked Mr. Eric Torres, Palmetto Elementary Principal. “Our students know acts of kindness and friendship last well beyond this week, and having this bench as a place they can go, to work out problems or to signal to one another that someone might need a little extra attention, lets them take the lead on carrying kindness forward,” he said. We are very grateful to our recent retirees for this lasting symbol of their dedication to the children of Palmetto Elementary.”

Howard Drive Elementary Fun Fair Had An App For All BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

A

S EDUCATION GROWS INCREASINGLY HIGH-TECH, DIGITAL APPLICATIONS have arisen for almost everything. This year’s Fun Fair at Howard Drive Elementary School followed this trend with a theme: ”Ready to Have Fun? We Have an App for That!” On October 18, the center of Howard Drive’s field was lined with nearly 30 carnivallike booths crafted by room parents featuring live versions of some of the most popular apps in today’s digital world. Popular “app” booths included non-digital, live versions of Maze, Horseshoe Toss, Minecraft, Angry Birds, and Cut the Rope, to name a few. While many well-known apps were recreated at the Fair, Howard Drive proudly utilized its own app, which was launched this year for parents, students and the community. The school is one of the first to have an app that helps connect parents, teachers, students and administrators, keeping everyone in the community aware of the school’s events. In addition to helping promote the event and its vendors, push notifications from the app helped coordinate the school’s drink-drive and wristband sales. On the day of the Fair, hundreds of students excitedly made their way to school, on a Saturday no less, to enjoy the festivities. The event, which raised more than $18,000, included rides, laser tag, face painting, colored hairspray makeovers, hamburgers, pizza, crepes, a towering slide, rock climbing, bounce houses, bungeetrampoline bouncing, and a cake walk. In addition to the food, rides, and games, visitors were able to see Category 5, the school’s dance team, perform and line-dance on the basketball courts to tunes from a live DJ. Along with the wonderful turnout, a silent auction helped increase the funds raised for the school. To make the auction run even smoother than usual, the PTA used a new digital format for real-time bidding, which made the auction very competitive. Bidders received immediate text notifications if outbid on items, so they could quickly bid anew. Two coveted parking spaces in the teacher’s lot sold for $700 and $800, respectively. “The money we raised will fund enrichment programs for the students, teachers and parents and will include technology to help prepare our children for the rest of their lives,” said Howard Drive Elementary’s PTA President Kathy Penney. “The Fun Fair is our largest fundraiser of the year and we are so thankful for the vendors, the sponsors and parent commitment for their steadfast dedication to our school and its programs,” Penney added. Howard Drive Elementary School is an “A” school, and holds a “Five Star” School award. It is located at 7750 SW 136th Street, Miami, Florida 33156. Visit its website at www.howarddriveelementary.com. Gulliver Announces Semifinalists in NMS Program BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

T

HE PSAT AND SAT LOOM OVER STUDENTS’ HEADS AS SOON AS THEY ENTER high school – and sometimes earlier. Many ninth and tenth grade students look at the PSAT as simply a practice test to signify a jumping off point for the beginning of SAT study and preparation. However, the PSAT also offers students the ability to compete for a coveted National Merit Scholarship (NMS). Entrance into the Scholarship Program is simple enough. Students take the exam, just like they otherwise would. With the prospect of a scholarship, however, many students may wish to spend more time preparing for the PSAT, rather than just entering it blindly. In 2013, of the approximately 1.4 million juniors who competed in the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP), approximately 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores (made up of critical reading + mathematics + writing skills scores) qualified for recognition.

This past September, high scorers were notified through their schools that they qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist based on their scores from the qualifying PSAT/NMSQT given last year. Approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers (around 16,000 students) were notified that they qualified as Semifinalists. To ensure that academically talented young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis. They are the highest scoring entrants in each state. Gulliver Schools was pleased to announce that four of its seniors, Allegra Kaufman, Schuyler Renkin, Demi Zhu and Kevin Shechtor, have been selected as Semifinalists in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. “It’s an honor to support these exemplary young students who have reached such a lauded distinction in their academic journey,” said Connie Ernsberger, Gulliver’s Director of College and Guidance Counseling. “With various other achievements and ambitious goals under their belt, these seniors have such a strong desire to achieve success that I also commend their parents and teachers who encouraged them every step of the way,” she added. The finalists will continue in the running for 76,000 National Merit Scholarships. Approximately half of the Finalists are likely to win a National Merit Scholarship typically valued at $2,500. The students continue on with the competition by meeting specified qualifications, submitting an application, showing a record of consistently very high academic performance, and sitting for the SAT exam, earning scores that confirm their qualifying PSAT/NMSQT performance. The 2015 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in April 2015. In addition to the finalists, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the high scorers received Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. This year, Gulliver Schools acknowledged and congratulated Riley W. Fitzgerald, Shanna S. Leventhal, Colleen S. Murray, Stephanie Peng, Tyler A. Sanchez, Camila Solis-Camara and Cindy M. Zou, seven students commended in the Program. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, and was established specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Marine Biology Students Spend the Day Shark Tagging BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

S

HARKS HAVE BEEN A SOURCE OF ENTERTAINMENT FROM JAWS TO SHARK Week to Sharknado. For the second year in a row, Honors Marine Biology students at Westminster Christian School (WCS) were given the opportunity to go beyond the big screen to conduct their own shark research. Working alongside University of Miami professors and undergraduate students from the RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation program, students learned first-hand how scientists gather information and track sharks in South Florida.

That’s why you should choose the Miami FL Team with a track record of success for their clients. Call Miami FL Team today and ask for a copy of their “Satisfied Client List.” Be on the right side of results.

Setting off from Crandon Marina, the students were briefed by Dr. Neil Hammerschlag, a research assistant professor at UM’s Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science. The group learned how to employ various scientific research techniques that would be used throughout the day to gain valuable information. Such techniques included morphological measurements, fin clip samples, nictitating membrane tests, and blood sample collection. While waiting for the first catch of the day, students collected environmental data on water temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen levels. These hands-on tasks help researchers better understand the environmental conditions affecting the different shark species that live in the waters surrounding South Florida. The students’ first catch of the day was a small blacknose shark. The shark was kept calm during the procedures through the use of a water pump which was placed in its mouth to move water over its gills. Despite poor weather over the course of the day, students additionally reeled in two nurse sharks and two tiger sharks. The students were especially excited about the tiger sharks, key predators in the ocean ecosystem, as they measured well over six feet in length. All the sharks were safely captured using an intricate system of weighted drumlines, swivels and hooks that allowed the sharks to remain swimming and breathing throughout the process. Real world experiences, such as these, allow students to participate in actual scientific research, develop scientific reasoning skills, and promote innovation, which are core values of the Honors Science Research Program at Westminster Christian School. “Engaging students in real life science is what helps students retain knowledge,” said Mrs. Raysa Gomez, WCS Honors Marine Biology teacher. “We all learn by doing. This oncein-a-lifetime shark tagging experience brings science to life, and awakens in students a hunger and passion for science,” she added. The students, including WCS Sophomore Valentine Farr, valued the opportunity to get out of the classroom to see Marine Biology in action. “Participating in real science research was definitely exciting,” Farr said. Founded in 1961, Westminster Christian School is a college-preparatory, coeducational school serving 1,176 students from preschool through 12th grade on its Palmetto Bay Campus. It is located at 6855 Southwest 152nd Street, 33157. For more information visit www.wcsmiami.org. To Advertise in The Florida Villager, Please call 786-505-1817

IAMI-PALMETTO SENIOR HIGH’S FUNDRAISING EFFORTS ARE IN FULL swing. While the school is slated for a $29 million dollar renovation to begin in 2015, there are many immediate needs and items outside of the strict parameters for renovation funding and the normal school budget. The school’s PTSA has stepped up to raise funds in an attempt to meet these needs. The PTSA’s Campaign for Excellence (CFE) fundraising initiative kicked off last November with a two-fold, multi-year initiative. “First and foremost, we want to raise funds for strategic, large-ticket needs that will benefit broad sectors of our student population. At the same time, we want to broaden the PTSA’s base of annual support among alumni, parents and local businesses,” said PTSA President Anna Hochkammer. For Pinecrest resident and EWM Realtor Dorothy Lewis, contributing to Palmetto High’s CFE made perfect sense. “I’m a big proponent of our incredible public school district and constantly educate my out-of-area clients on how our superior schools protect our home values here,” she said. “But as a former PTA president at Pinecrest Elementary, I’m well aware that with the cuts in state funding, our schools need all the support they can get from the community.”

Past community support has already helped fund important projects at Palmetto High. CFE’s first success was installation of an updated sound system for the 600-seat school auditorium with the initial $10,000 raised. “Palmetto High has a huge, active performing arts department, and a high-quality sound system for our drama, musical theatre, orchestra and bands was a top priority,” said Hochkammer. Serving the entire feeder pattern, Palmetto High’s auditorium is used by Pinecrest Elementary and Palmetto Elementary schools because they lack the space to host large arts events. “This project benefits the entire local community, not just our students and parents,” she noted. Another CFE accomplishment was a $6,000 upgrade to outdated hardware and software in the school’s TV production department this fall. The updates were made with funds raised in partnership with Gus Machado Ford of Kendall. The auto dealership hosted a Drive 4 UR School event in October that gave a donation for every test drive taken. Presently, the CFE is seeking $12,500 to purchase an additional 25 computers to complete a state-of-the-art digital testing suite in the media center that will also be used as a media center resource. For donations of $1,000 or more, Palmetto Senior’s PTSA offers a variety of recognition, including a 4’ x 8’ banner on one of the school’s perimeter fences, mention on the PTSA website, email blasts to PTSA members and invitation to donor receptions. The banner program has received rave reviews from donors. “I got lots of comments on mine, a lot of people saw my picture, and they know I’m in the community and support our high school,” said Lewis. “It’s an excellent way for the school to raise money, and it’s a great way to promote local businesses. Everybody wins.” she added. MPHS PTSA thanks its CFE donors to date: EWM Realtor Dorothy Lewis, Prime Air & Ocean Cargo, EWM Realtor Tim Hasty, MDW Insurance, The Corradino Group, Lexus of Kendall, Toyota of Kendall, FEMBI Mortgage Brokers, Vega & Oprandi Wealth Partners, EZ Vet, and Mathnasium of Palmetto Bay. For more information on how to support Miami Palmetto PTSA’s CFE, contact Marian Hasty at (305) 4965055 or marian@ghlawyers.com. To Advertise in The Florida Villager, Please call 786-505-1817

FE ATURE : CHILDREN’S RESOURCES FUND

S

A State-of-the-Art Educational Experience for Children

ITTING ON TWO AND A HALF ACRES, CHILDREN’S RESOURCES FUND (CRF) is a beautiful stateof-the-art Educational Center that offers a highly regarded Inclusion preschool and elementary program. The Center has often been referred to as the “Miracle on 112th Street”. A rare jewel in the community, CRF, was founded in 1978 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving people with developmental disabilities. CRF evolved and changed its scope of service in 1995 by opening “Children’s Resources Preschool,” one of the first inclusion programs in the State of Florida. Inclusive schools are based on the basic principle that all school children should learn together, regardless of their needs or difficulties. Research has shown that all children can and do benefit from this type of program. Typically developing children can gain empathy and leadership skills while improving their academic performances as a result of a low teacher/student ratio and highly trained teachers and staff. On the other hand, a child with special needs will benefit from being exposed to typical role models. Their preschool is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and awarded Five Stars by the Early Learning Coalition, while the Girsh Elementary Academy follows a unique and challenging program tailored to providing individualized educational opportunities for children who have difficulties in traditional classroom settings. To meet the needs of their students, CRF offers a low student to teacher ratio with highly qualified and continually trained teachers. The preschool and The Girsh Elementary Academy maintain a 5:1 student/teacher ratio and all teachers have a Masters or Bachelor level degree in Education or Special Education. All Assistants hold either an Associate’s Degree or a National Certification. In addition to the staff’s expertise, CRF also offers individual education plans to all the children and ongoing assessments to monitor progress. On site services such as occupational, speech, behavior and

physical therapies, as well as the use of sensory rooms are other components that enhance the overall experience a child will have while attending CRF. Along with its unique educational offerings, CRF has a brand new playground that accommodates the needs of all children. Moreover, CRF provides the students with the latest in technology including iPads, smart boards, Fast ForWord Reading Program, and a computer lab as well as extracurricular activities such as, cooking, dance, piano lessons and homework support. Children’s Resources is more than a school, it is a home where all children can grow and thrive. Each child who comes through the door will enter a place where their highest potential will be achieved. For more information or to experience everything that Children’s Resources Fund has to offer, please call 305.596.6966 or visit CRF online at www.crfcenter.org.

ANNUAL MUSICAL GALA

All proceeds from the gala go to fund essential programs and services offered to the children. This is an event not to be missed! Holiday by the Bay is on the horizon as our winter signature event. Last year the promised snow fall turned out record numbers of residents. It was a magical night of falling snow, carnival games, pictures with Santa, arts and crafts and more that brought a great holiday spirit to Palmetto Bay. The holiday season is one of family, friends and of giving to others. The giving spirit of the season will be upon us. I hope that the spirit will continue throughout the year and create new bonds of friendship and caring about our neighbors and fellow residents. Happy Holidays and a great New Year.

WHAT’S NE W IN RE A L ESTATE

Boom or Bust BY ELENA KEMPER, EWM REALTY

W

HO SAYS YOU CAN’T HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT too? The idea of living in paradise is universal. But how about letting that paradise make you money? That’s a dream many only wish to have. What if I told you the dream is not so farfetched? There are many who look at Miami as an opportunity to prosper. From Ponce De Leon to Julia Tuttle and Henry Flagler, millions have flocked to the Magic City for their chance of the Florida equivalent of the “Gold Rush.” With opportunities aplenty in Miami, that possibility is closer to reality than ever before. The population is growing, as can be attested by anyone getting on any major roadway in the area during rush hour, or by stopping at your local Publix. With our city growing every day, the need for housing has never been stronger. Not just luxury penthouse living, but regular homes for regular people. Folks who need access to local schools, hospitals, shops, and so forth. This need has created a huge demand for rental properties, as many new “Miamians” are either unsure of exactly where they would like to settle or perhaps are just not at the point where they have the financial means to do so. The principals of economics explain, as demand goes up generally there is a decrease in supply, which in turn drives

prices up. These are principals that are fundamental, and have been likely explained on paper in classrooms perhaps as early as elementary school. In this case, the example comes to life. With rental prices reaching record highs, some say the market for rentals has never been hotter. What this means for those fortunate enough to be in the position to acquire a portfolio of properties is profit. As time goes on, those properties will also grow in value, leading to a win-win situation as rental income couples with the increase in equity. While the formula to success is laid out like a blue print, there certainly is some challenge involved. And as we know, with reward comes a fair share of risk. When was the last time you gained something without putting at least something on the line? It is important to remember the end game here, balancing your books in the black at the end of the year. The keys to success lie in an understanding of trends and fluctuations in market value over the years, and knowledge of upcoming developments that are bound to reshape the map and landscape of our lives. Having this local in depth knowledge is crucial. The right guidance can make or break your bottom line. It could be the difference between boom or bust. IT’S THEIR BUSINES S

At Marino Eye Care, It’s Quality Over Quantity BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

S

PECIALIZING IN ORTHOKERATOLOGY and Pediatric Vision Care, Dr. Vanessa Marino and Dr. Robert Grand are full service eye and vision care providers seeing patients with both eye emergencies as well as scheduled appointments. A visit to Marino Eye Care won’t provide you with a traditional optometrist appointment. Instead, the doctors perform lengthy comprehensive exams offering more than the typical assessments of simply reading a row of letters. Born and raised in Miami, Dr. Marino completed her undergraduate education at the University of Miami in 2003, and received her Doctor of Optometry degree at Nova Southeastern University in 2007. In 2008, she completed a residency in primary care and pediatrics/binocular vision. to become an Optometrist. “He really showed me that I like to teach a lot,” Dr. Marino said. After completing her residency, Dr. Marino instructed and supervised optometry students at the Nova Southeastern University Pediatric Department in North Miami Beach until 2010. She now serves as an adjunct clinical professor for the New England College of Optometry, where students come to Miami to complete a three-month rotation to satisfy their internship requirements. In addition to giving back to other students, Dr. Marino has a special way with children which has helped her develop her pediatric specialty. Going beyond traditional letter recognition assessments, Dr. Marino explained how she assesses a child’s ability to focus and to track. “It’s 40

explains, in order to avoid a prescription that can cause a problem long-term. “We can go back and tweak when the patient is older,” she said. In addition to diagnostic exams, Dr. Marino also offers Orthokeratology to her patients. Orthokeratology, or “Ortho-K” as it is commonly called, is for myopic patients, those who can’t see far away. Kids under 18 years old typically aren’t candidates for Lasik surgery since their prescription can worsen over time. Ortho-K offers an alternative treatment that reshapes and flattens the cornea so that it doesn’t steepen over time, causing more problems. “It was made for the prevention of the progression of nearsightedness,” Dr. Marino said. The treatment consists of wearing special lenses at night

while sleeping. Though it can take a few weeks to get used to the feeling of the lenses, the treatment is not painful. Along with prevention, the lenses have a secondary benefit. “The lenses come off in the morning and you don’t need glasses for the rest of the day,” Dr. Marino explains. The added benefit of not needing glasses during the day, has inspired many adults to jump on the Ortho-K bandwagon. “For adult patients who don’t want surgery, Orthokeratology has an aesthetic benefit,” Dr. Marino says. She therefore sees adult patients for Ortho-K treatment as well. Aside from traditional eye-care services, many adults also come to Dr. Marino for her specialty in hard-to-fit contact lenses for patients with corneal diseases and ocular disfigurements. These lenses allow patients with special ocular conditions to attain vision that is far superior to ordinary soft contact lenses. A special machine called a Topographer helps Dr. Marino map out the front surface of the eye to detect diseases and to help her know for sure what contacts are needed. It provides information about the eye’s curvature, size, and thickness to assist in the fitting for specialty contact lenses. The Topographer also helps with the Ortho-K lens, and it “allows us to monitor the progress of a disease, changes in the cornea, and myopia progress, which would be impossible to see with a magnifying lens,” Dr. Marino explains.

MUSIC NE WS

The Gift of Music: A Gift That Lasts a Lifetime BY IRIS COHEN

D

O YOU KNOW A MUSIC LOVER THAT YOU WANT TO BUY A SPECIAL GIFT FOR? There are lots of neat gadgets and equipment that your musician would love to get and would probably appreciate more than the typical after shave, tie or socks! Just about this time of year you will ask or be asked the seasons most frequently asked question…What do you want for Christmas? If you are like me, this is the moment that your mind goes blank and you come up with some lame response. Of course, after I have given them some dumb answer, I actually come up with a huge list of my “wants.” Unfortunately, this epiphany comes much later and then I am too embarrassed to tell them what terrific, “gotta have” things I have come up with.

It is hard for a non-musician to figure out what to buy for a musician without coming right out and asking them. So what do you do? You are pretty sure that they would like to have something related to the instrument they play, but since you are not a musician and probably don’t know what they already have, you are kind of stuck. You could ask them, but then it wouldn’t be a surprise. And what if they ask for something that is not in your budget? There are many items that would be useful and appreciated regardless of what instrument is played, and many of them can be purchased for under $10. For example, just about any musician could use a music stand. There are a wide variety of music stands to choose from; light weight portable models as well as heavy duty stationary types. Most string instruments need to be tuned prior to every performance. While many musicians have a tuner, having a second one allows them to keep one in their gig bag and another at home or at the studio. What else? Consider buying your favorite musician a guitar/instrument stand, or a cool strap or a capo for your acoustic guitar player, or a microphone or…get the idea? There are lots and lots of gifts to choose from, but if the choices get too overwhelming for you, there is always the favorite of all…the gift certificate!

Let the professionals at Musicians Discount Center in South Miami help you make this holiday season come alive with the sounds of music. They are the one stop music shop that has been sharing their expertise with others for many years. They offer new and used instruments, instrument rentals, rent to own programs, and music lessons. HE ALTH Y PE T

The Holiday Puppy BY TAMI MAIER

I

LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE

S GETTING A PUPPY FOR THE HOLIDAYS REALLY A GOOD IDEA? BEFORE YOU bring home a new puppy for the holidays it is important to consider the pros and cons. The scene is almost like watching your favorite Holiday movie…the tree is decorated, the lights are on, the stockings are hanging from the mantle and the presents are stacked high under the tree. Then suddenly a box begins to move, shake, and then tumble over as an adorable puppy with a big red bow pops out of the box. To some people, the puppy will be the best gift they have ever received, and will cherish that moment for the rest of their lives. But for others, it is not a gift that should be given on a whim. Before giving a puppy to your family or someone else, you need to make sure that this is the right time to bring a new pet into a home, especially one that requires so much care.

Pros

As said before, a puppy can be the most wonderful gift a person will ever get. As long as you are sure the receiver really wants one, today’s adorable puppy will be a lifelong companion. Breeders plan for Christmas all year long, trying to have their puppies ready for the Holiday Season. What this means to you is that it truly becomes a buyer’s market. There will be many to choose from so finding the breed you want should be easier than ever and possibly at a better price.

Cons

The Holidays are typically more busy, with relatives staying over, holiday parties etc… and with all the hustle and bustle around the house it may not be the easiest time to bring in a new puppy, leaving little time to concentrate on puppy training. With puppy training it is important to make sure it is consistent. If you get off track with the training, it may take a few weeks to get back on track. A full house with a lot of guests can be very stressful to a puppy. Everyone wants to hold the new bundle of love, but the puppy can easily become tired and overwhelmed. I mentioned in the pros section that the prices for a puppy may be lower during the holidays. The con here is, unfortunately not all breeders are good breeders, so make sure that you are getting a puppy from a reputable breeder and not just from the one that offers your breed of choice at the lowest price.

Planning for a New Puppy

»» Purchase a crate, dog bed, bowls and something safe for them to chew on. »» Place the crate in a quiet room away from a lot of holiday celebrations. »» Find a good Veterinarian, groomer and pet sitter hopefully before the puppy arrives so that you are well prepared. »» Explain to your children that the puppy will need time to rest and time alone in his/her crate. Puppies need a lot of rest. »» Avoid sharing your holiday feast with your new puppy as these foods will upset their tummy. Stick to the food that the puppy is on. »» Make sure toxic plants such as mistletoe and poinsettias are completely out of your puppy’s reach. Whether you purchase a puppy or adopt a dog, bringing a puppy into your home at any time is a big decision. Please make sure you truly are ready to add a new member to your family. ‘Tis The Season to Travel BY DR. MARIANNE CERDA

W

ITH THE HOLIDAYS FAST APPROACHING, WE ARE OVERCOME WITH THE thoughts of Christmas shopping, decorations, holiday treats and the unfortunate holiday pounds. The holidays are a joyful time spent with our loved ones, both two-legged and four-legged. For some of us this means decorating and cooking up a storm at home, but for others this means battling the airport crowd to reunite with our families. If traveling is part of your holiday tradition this year, here are a few tips to help assure your pets are safe and sound. For those of you who plan to travel without your pets: Kennels: If you are planning on boarding your pet at a kennel, here are some important tips on verifying that the business is a reputable place to house your pets: »» Ask to have a tour of the facility. It is important that you feel comfortable with the area that your pet will be spending time in. »» Are pets housed in runs or cages. »» Does the facility appear clean, orderly, free of offensive odors and of adequate temperature. »» Does the facility offer 24-hour care/monitoring. »» Are pets allowed outdoor access, if so, is it properly secured. »» Does the facility require vaccination records and proof of parasitic (fleas, ticks, heartworm) prevention. Risk of disease transmission is high in environments where animals are housed in close contact. Therefore, it is important that this policy is strongly enforced at any boarding facility.

Pet Sitters: »» Recommendations from friends, neighbors, Veterinarians are always welcomed. »» Assure that the pet sitter has commercial liability insurance (to cover accidents and negligence) and is bonded. »» Can references be provided. »» What specific daily schedule do they agree to or do they offer a live-in service . »» Can your pet sitter easily be reached via telephone, text and/or email.

Whether you are boarding your pet at a local kennel or have made arrangements with a pet sitter, make sure to provide extra pet food in case of emergency, with detailed instructions on quantity of food to be given at each feeding and feeding schedule. If your pet receives daily medications, assure that enough medication is provided and that detailed instructions on dosage and scheduling is given. A daily chart may help facilitate ease of administration and allow for record keeping. Always provide several emergency contact numbers in addition to yours, including your Veterinarian and local emergency clinic. For those of you traveling with your pets: Via Airline:

»» Contact your airline to receive detailed instructions on airline policies for traveling with pets. »» Make appointment with your Veterinarian to ascertain if your pet is healthy for travel. Most airlines require a health certificate provided by your Veterinarian. »» Consider permanent identification such as a microchip in addition to collar ID tags. »» Crates should be of adequate size to allow your pet to stand, turn and lay. They should also be durable, provide adequate ventilation and be marked with appropriate identification. »» Water should be made available at all times during travel. Your airline will instruct you on appropriate and allowable water containers.

Via Automobile: »» »» »» »» »»

Short trips in your vehicle prior to the big day can allow your pet to acclimate to travel by car. Contact your Veterinarian if your pet appears stressed or exhibits symptoms of motion sickness. Ensure that your pet is adequately secured in the vehicle, whether it be in a crate or with a pet seatbelt. Stop frequently for water, exercise and potty breaks. Never, by any means, allow your pet to be left unattended in a vehicle.

The holidays will just as quickly pass as they have arrived. Take time this year to enjoy the company of your loved ones. We wish you a safe holiday season and a very happy new year!

LL YEAR LONG, FLORIDA VILLAGER READERS HAVE CONtacted us to inquire what Security Arms International (SAI) does to help mitigate everyday threats to themselves, their families, their homes, and their businesses. We have decided to dedicate this month’s article to answering those questions. Since 2006, SAI’s mission has been to improve the safety and security of individuals and businesses, and to promote related opportunities and information in the communities we serve. Today, our offices and retail shop are located at 13981 South Dixie Highway, in the Village of Palmetto Bay. Below are real-world examples of services provided by SAI to individuals and businesses in recent times: Home Security Consulting: A homeowner, who happened to be a multinational’s CFO, received verbal threats to his home and family from a recently-dismissed, disgruntled employee. We immediately performed an assessment of the security posture at his residence, as well as the family’s daily routes and routines. As we managed the quick upgrade of his inadequate, home intrusion detection systems, we helped to randomize his daily routine and movements. The former employee was surveilled. Due to the specificity of the threats, liaison with local law enforcement was established until the threat ceased. Corporate Security Consulting, US: Contrary to the company’s values, the operations manager of a large, local auto shop, was found to be engaging in suspicious practices that exposed the business to undue financial and reputational risks. When discovered, the manager became physically belligerent with the owner and made specific threats to the business. We immediately executed a comprehensive plan to safeguard the owner and preserve business continuity, as we served a cease-and-desist order to the rogue manager. We assembled and led a team of reputable security providers for these tasks. During the transition, a security team controlled access to the premises, while security dogs patrolled the lot after hours. Cameras, computer networks, and access points were overhauled, and local law enforcement was engaged. The owner was provided a personal protection escort, and the former manager was surveilled until the threat ceased. Corporate Security Investigations, Overseas: A large electronics manufacturer began to notice an increase of counterfeit product in their markets, hurting their revenue and reputation and prompting customer complaints, as the illicit copies were of lesser quality. We stepped in to uncover the source of illicit product, coordinate law enforcement raids at points of manufacture, and restore consumer confidence in the brand. Firearms and Accessories: To our good fortune, we are headquartered in Florida, a State that recognizes and promotes a qualified individual’s right to keep and bear arms. We are Federal Firearms License holders, entrusted to ensure that any individual receiving a firearm is not disqualified at the moment of transfer according to the law. Beyond the trade, maintenance, and repair of firearms, we provide ammunition and accessories such as holsters, safety gear, optics, small safes, and non-lethal defense products like pepper spray and stun guns. Personal Security Training: Even more important than providing protection or purveying arms is our role as educators in these industries. So many opinions are dangerously misinformed that we gladly work to dispel myths and misunderstandings for those who seek clarity. We provide training to individuals, families, business owners, and public servants almost weekly; in fact, we provide security training every day over the counter, over the phone, at the range, and sometimes even overseas. Many of the perceived risks associated to the sport of arms and to the security industry originate from lack of knowledge. And let’s face it, sometimes ignorance provides a “comfortable chasm” to hide from controversy. To the extent we can, we are happy to fill that gap. Call us! Luis Ortega owns and operates Security Arms International. He is a former U.S. Marine Corps Captain with 24 years of experience in security and investigations, both in the government and corporate sectors. He has worked with individuals, local businesses, and multinationals to protect key personnel, supply chains, and intellectual property, both in the US and abroad. Choosing the Right Real Estate Attorney or Title Agent for Your Closing BY ALINA F. NUÑEZ, ESP., NUÑEZ LAW

C

HOOSING THE RIGHT REAL ESTATE Attorney or Title Agent to handle your real estate transaction can mean the difference between a smooth and rapid closing and a complicated, delayed closing, fraught with anguish. It is a choice which should be made carefully. There are several important criteria which should be considered. 1. Reputation in the community. A good place to begin your search is to ask your friends and acquaintances who have had recent experience with real estate transactions to recommend a company or an individual they have been pleased with, one who met all their expectations. Ask your friends if the real estate attorney or title agent they recommend returns phone calls promptly, explains details in everyday, understandable language, inspires confidence, and is knowledgeable and acts in a professional, courteous manner. 2. Experience. No two real estate attorneys or title agents are the same. Look for one that has years of experience handling real estate transactions and has the knowledge and expertise to provide you with the best service. A real estate attorney can also be a licensed Title Agent but a title company does not have to be owned or operated by a licensed attorney. Some Florida title companies are owned and operated by a Florida licensed title insurance agent, and that person does not need to be an attorney. Make sure you know if your title agent is also

a licensed real estate attorney. 3. The fees that your real estate attorney or title agent is going to charge. Fees charged by real estate attorneys or title agents do vary, and the decision on who pays which fees will also vary from contract to contract. You will want to try to select the most reputable and professional real estate attorney or title agent you can find, combined with the one who also charges the most reasonable fees. Several fees, such as recording fees, transfer tax fees, are non-negotiable and will be the same statewide. Title settlement fees and escrow fees can vary from company to company. After looking at the reputation of the real estate attorney or title agent in the community, the experience of the office, and the fees charged, choose the real estate attorney or title agent that you would feel most comfortable working with, going over documents and discussing all aspects of your closing process with in detail. Your choice of real estate attorney or title agent may be one of the most important decisions you make to arrive at your final goal of a timely real estate closing. Alina F. Nunez, Esq. is a Real Estate Attorney and Title Agent located in Downtown Dadeland. Alina has over 15 years of experience in Real Estate matters, both Residential and Commercial, and her areas of practice include Title/Closing services, Short Sales, Foreclosures, and Landlord/Tenant disputes. HE STATISTICS ARE NUMBING, 50% OF MARRIAGES END in front of a judge. The Big D is not pretty and certainly takes its toll on all concerned, even the dog, but it still is not the doom and gloom that people portray. How is it that some people see it as the end of life and others see it as the beginning? I, myself, have seen it both ways. Having been divorced, when first faced with the realization that life as I knew it for 15 years was over, I admit, I fell into the abyss. Then one day while hanging out with the Grim Reaper, it hit me…I put myself into this abyss, not the divorce, and thus I decided to change my way of thinking. I believe through all things, lessons are learned and divorce is no different. Your lessons might certainly be different from mine but I would like to share my acquired insights on life and myself. »» Divorce does not define you, how you get through it does. »» Being your best doesn’t mean being perfect. »» Turn your divorce into a beacon not an abyss. »» You learn to love yourself more than you care or love the person who hurt you. »» People don’t set your limits; you do. »» Get out of your own way. »» Rise each morning with hope and anticipation in your heart. »» Divorce can close you off. Stay open to see the miracles and remember, miracles don’t always come with a marquee. They can be small but powerful. »» Trust your inner wisdom. »» Have your own purpose/passion. »» Do what makes you happy. »» Don’t believe the naysayers and give up. Change does happen, but you create the change you want. »» Life is tough, but you’re tougher. »» Get out of your comfort zone. »» Just because something worked 5 years ago doesn’t mean it works now. Make room for new things. »» Focus on your strengths more than improving your weaknesses. As a Man Thinketh, don’t get hung up on what you’re not good at, stand strong in what you are good at. »» Let go of the outcome and enjoy the moment! Every life post divorce starts with commitment. Ask yourself, “Am I fully in?” Are you saying you have moved on but instead still holding on? The key is being brutally honest with yourself and choosing to change your perspective about this time in your life. Your thoughts create your life; good, bad or indifferent, so strive for the good! Debbie Martinez, MA is a certified, mindful life coach specializing in divorce (aka: heartbreak coach). She professionally coaches clients on how to avoid the breakup backlash and live better, not bitter. As a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Mediator trained in collaborative divorce, Debbie gives clients the tools they need to successfully untie the knot and stand strong in the wake of adversity. She brings her formal training and life experience into her coaching practice to empower and educate clients through their divorce journey and onto new beginnings. BOATING TIPS

Always Practice Proper Boating Safety BY ERIC RAISTRICK, OWNER OF ERIC’S OUTBOARD

F

OR GENERATIONS SOUTH Florida has been a boating hot spot for everything from cruising in the sun to finding the perfect fishing spot. South Florida doesn’t just host a large amount of big charter fishing yachts; the types of boating done in South Florida varies on a wide range. What makes South Florida unique is its geological location, with two separate ecosystems on both sides and a swamp in the middle. Because of this vast ecological variety, the waters of South Florida are home to a variety of boats in all different sizes with different applications. With all these different varieties of boating options, there is one thing that they all have in common and that is, no matter what kind of boat you’re on, you need to always practice proper boating safety. The most important thing you can do when first acquiring a boat is to make sure you’re ready for anything. The first step is to have your vessel inspected for all the proper safety equipment. This includes proper amount and style of personal flotation devices, as well as, the correct amount of flares, whistles, and other required safety equipment. This can easily be accomplished with a price that everyone

will agree on. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadron both offer a free, that’s right free, vessel safety check. This is a great service especially to beginner boaters; that way when you’re on the water you know you will have all necessary equipment and avoid a possible fine if you are inspected by the authorities. Scheduling this appointment is easy, all you have to do is fill out the form on their website and they will send an inspector to you at a time that is convenient for you. There is also a number of boating safety courses available that can be taken either online or in person. In the state of Florida one must take one of these courses if they are born after January 1, 1988, in order to operate any type of boat that is powered by a ten horsepower engine or greater. Once again, all this information can be found on the United States Coast Guard boating website at www.uscgboating.org. When operating any vessel you should always follow proper safety procedures. As a boater you should never over exceed the limitations of your vessel. This is true in two aspects; the first aspect is never over power your vessel. Manufactures have a maximum horse power rating for each boat. Any vessel that is overpowered will not be able to be insured. The second aspect of this is capacity. By this, of course, I mean people capacity. If your vessel

is over its limitations there is a higher probability that you can roll your vessel and sink it. The most important safety tip I can give you is to not operate any vessel while under the influence of narcotics or alcohol. Operating any vessel while intoxicated is not safe and is highly illegal. The last thing to keep in mind is to follow all the laws of the water. As a boat owner it is your responsibility to ensure the safety of your guests, and the only way to accomplish that is to follow all proper safety procedures. Eric Raistrick opened Eric’s Outboard in 1986 as a mobile outboard marine mechanic. He became a Yamaha dealer in 1996. Eric’s Outboard is now Full Line Yamaha dealer, servicing only Yamaha outboards. Eric’s Outboard is proud to have the only two Yamaha Master Marine Technicians in South Florida on their staff. HE SMELL OF SNOW IS IN THE AIR AND THE CHILL OF WINTER IS INVIGORATing. Well, maybe not here in Miami, but in New Mexico where Red River and Taos are gearing up for a fabulous season. Each resort offers something unique from the other. Red River reminds me of a western town and Taos has its Swiss/German charm. My introduction to New Mexico skiing was in Red River. Driving into town I felt like I had stepped back in time to a small western town. Everything there is within walking distance to Main Street, including the slopes. The slopes are geared for every level, and at the end of the day, everyone skis down to The Lift House for an après ski drink (and great wings) to usher in the beautiful night sky on the deck. After some local camaraderie, I had my first ride in a snow cat, riding shotgun no less, up the mountain to the Ski Tip Restaurant for dinner and local music. Riding down the mountain with the town lights twinkling and the after affects of good wine and music, I was ready to snuggle under my comforter in front of my very own fireplace at the Auslander Condominiums. Not to be missed is breakfast at Shotgun Willies. Don’t let the size of the establishment fool you as they serve up one whopping good breakfast that kept me full until I made my way over to Brett’s Bistro for lunch. From a mining town to a ski town, Red River is a ski destination you will want to experience. Along with downhill skiing, there is snow mobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and all the flavor a quaint western town brings. See you on Main Street! Taos was my next stop and all I can say is, “So many trails, so little time.” Taos Ski Valley is known for some of the steepest and most intimidating slopes in North America. That being said, I am not a black diamond kind of gal and I skied some of the most beautiful terrain at my level. There are “powder stashes” here at Taos, but unfortunately I am not at that level to head down those slopes, so I lived vicariously through the skiers I watched head down Lorelei in a whoosh of powder. You can find your thrill on Strawberry Hill, which is one amazing tubing park, Telemark down the slopes or snowshoe on any one of Taos’ numerous trails. After a full day of non-stop skiing, I made my way to Hotel St. Bernard. Nestled on the ski slopes and exuding old world charm is an enchanting hotel named for the patron saint of skiers. I found myself in leggings, an oversized sweater and Uggs sitting by a big copper fireplace, hot toddy in hand listening to live jazz and watching the snow fall. Just when I thought a more idyllic place did not exist, I found myself walking through the door of the Bavarian Lodge and Restaurant. Furnished with European antiques, wooden beams and a Bavarian tile stove, I was overwhelmed with the warmth and coziness of it all. The lodge sits at the base of Kachina Peak and one can get there by skis during the day and by car at night. The staff is dressed in lederhosen and dimdls, which only add to the charm. After a fabulous German dinner, I walked out onto the deck and into the stillness of the New Mexico night. Tomorrow I leave Taos and head to Santa Fe and a new skiing adventure. Our Holiday Season Safety Tips! BY FRANK ISTUETA, OWNER, ISTUETA ROOFING

T

thermometer. »» Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of preparation. »» Properly defrost your turkey or buy a fresh one. »» Reheat leftovers to 165 degrees. Trees: When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is green, needles are hard to pull from branches, and don’t break when bent between your fingers. Here are some more tips for when you get your tree home: »» When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces. »» Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to allow for better water absorption. »» Keep the stand filled with water, because heated rooms can dry live trees out rapidly. »» Make sure the base is steady so the tree won’t tip over easily. Fireplaces: Everyone loves a crackling fire, but one of the most important things you can do before the winter holidays are in full swing is to heed all of the safety warnings recommended for homes with a fireplace. »» Before lighting any fire, remove all greens, boughs, papers and other decorations from fireplace area. »» Check to see that the flue is open. »» Don’t burn wrapping paper in the fireplace as it ignites suddenly and burns intensely.

HE WINTER HOLIDAYS ARE A TIME FOR CELebration, and that means more cooking, decorating, entertaining, and an increased risk of fire and accidents. So, we’re offering these guidelines to help make your holiday season safer and more enjoyable. Holiday Decorations: As twinkling lights and festive decorations emerge from storage, it’s important to keep safety in mind when making your home merry and bright. »» Choose lights and decorations made with flameresistant, flame-retardant and non-combustible materials. »» Carefully inspect new and previously used light strings, and replace damaged items before plugging lights in. »» Don’t overload extension cords. »» Before using lights outdoors, be sure they are certified for outdoor use. »» Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. Holiday Entertaining: Did you know that unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S.? So remember to keep an eye on the stove and follow these food safety tips: »» Cook to proper temperature and use a cooking

»» Have your fireplace cleaned by a professional at least once every year. Pets: As you are enjoying the holiday season, it’s important to remember that certain traditions aren’t always safe for your pets. It’s important that you take preventative measures to ensure that your pets stay healthy and safe during the holidays. »» Holly, mistletoe, and poinsettia plants are poisonous to dogs and cats so keep them where your pets can’t reach. »» Avoid using tinsel – if your pet eats it, they can suffer from mild distress or even death. »» Edible tree ornaments such as popcorn or cranberry are too enticing and your pet will probably tug at them and possibly knock down your tree. In closing, if you’re traveling this holiday season don’t post information regarding when you’ll be gone on social media – it could land in the hands of an opportunistic burglar! Here’s wishing you and yours a happy and safe holiday season! Istueta Roofing, South Florida’s Most Trusted Roofer Since 1985, can be reached at 305.671.9625 or online at www.istuetaroofing.com.

Upscale Furniture Consignment Gallery …It’s Been Five Years!!! Rita Schwartz opened Upscale Furniture Consignment Gallery five years ago, in the midst of the greatest recession since 1929. In 2009, over 7,000 furniture stores had closed their doors across the country, yet Ms. Schwartz, against all odds, decided to open a store, selling furniture, but with a twist… high end and gently used. Hence the name…. UPSCALE FURNITURE CONSIGNMENT GALLERY, located at 8845 S.W 132nd Street, in “Shoppes By the Falls” Ware house District.

When you first walk into this store, you immediately realize this is not the typical consignment shop that you might expect. Instead, your eyes start wandering at an amazing assortment of all types of furniture, of incredible quality. Better yet, there is 6,000 square feet of hidden treasures for you to explore for every room in your home or office. Rita Schwartz personally reviews every item that comes into her store. When customers want to consign a piece, she does meticulous research to make sure that each item is exactly as advertised. The store reflects Rita’s exquisite taste in furniture, as well as her knowledge about what types of furniture appeal to her customer base. The store is always changing as new pieces

arrive several times a week. That means, every trip to Upscale Furniture is a new exciting journey! What hidden gem will you discover today? Another important aspect of this business are the prices as most items have been reduced by 70% of their original cost. Not only are there bargains galore, but the “upscale’ quality of those items make a trip to the store a winning experience…for you!

Rita is also very involved in the community. She has spent the past twenty years working to save the lives of our animals and has raised over a million dollars to fund local animal rescue groups. Rita is also the co-founder of Pets’ Trust Miami, an initiative that 500,000 in Miami voted to support, and is a well known personality in Miami Dade government. Against all odds, Rita Schwartz not only has generated more awareness of the plight of our animals, but also created a hugely successful business by creating a niche that appeals to her thousands of customers. If you are in the market for furniture, a stop at Upscale Furniture Consignment Gallery should be your first stop, “where vintage and class meet, at prices that can’t be beat!”

SEEN ON SCENE A WUNDERBAR NIGHT AT THE DEERING ESTATE

BURGERLISCIOUS

On November 16, the Coral Gables Chamber of Congress presented Burgerliscious at Fred B. Hartnett/Pointe Circle Park. Over 14 restaurants participated including Christy’s Restaurant, CRAVE, Seasons 52, ROK:BRGR, Shake Shack, and Swine Southern Table & Bar.

The Deering Estate Foundation’s 13th Annual Wine On Harvest Moon fundraising event presented by South BMW immersed a sold-out crowd in the sites, sounds and flavors of Germany. Little Red Riding Hood, Prince Charming and a slew of other storybook stars escorted guests to the Stone House “castle” where they enjoyed a night of sampling fine wine, fine food and viewing fine art. Throughout the Estate top area chefs creatively added German influences to their specialties, and Veronica Litton CSW of Crown Wine and Spirits coordinated an array of wine tastings. FIU School of Music classical piano, opera and chamber performances filled the ballroom, while the Frost School of Music–UM Trombone Choir and Baroque Players joined traditional German dancers and an accordionist who entertained on the moonlit front lawn. Even Rapunzel attended, and sang from the balcony above the crowd. Auctioneer Michael Baiamonte, The Arena Voice of the Miami Heat, roused the crowd to bid on an exclusive “Deering Experience” 12-day Mediterranean Celebrity Cruise, a date with WPLG-TV stars meteorologist Trent Aric and anchor Jacey Birch, cases of Deering wine and a Maus Vineyard tour, and an artifact of the Berlin Wall that included dinner with the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Miami. SEEN ON SCENE BABY BULLS ACADEMY

Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho and Gulliver Head of Schools Frank Steel personally visited Holmes Elementary to show their support for the Baby Bulls Academy Saturday School. An initiative between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and partners Teach for America and Gulliver Schools, this program aims to expose third and fourth grade students to additional reading time via one-on-one tutoring from students in grades nine through 12. Since early 2014, the program - held on a bi-monthly basis from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday mornings - offers both Miami Northwestern Senior High School AP students and Gulliver Prep IB students the opportunity to give their free time to make a life-changing impact on the lives of young students at Holmes.

PALMETTO ELEMENTARY’S BAND Palmetto Elementary’s concert band played the Star Spangled Banner at the Florida Bandmasters Association High School Marching Band Music Performance Assessment at Miami Dade CollegeNorth Campus. Palmetto Elementary was the only elementary school invited to join area middle schools in the performance.

MATH & SCIENCE NIGHT

On October 15, Palmetto Elementary hosted its annual Math & Science Night, an evening where kids, parents, and teachers come out to explore the lighter side of these important classroom subjects. Throughout the evening, children moved from station to station to engage in the different science experiments offered and to take on math puzzles that went beyond the textbooks. Students of all ages were able to participate in this communitybuilding event.
