The 4th annual Fit Kids Day took place at Evelyn Greer Park on May 2nd featuring tennis drills, soccer training, martial arts, Miracle League baseball games, lacrosse demos, Zumba and relaxation techniques as well as nutritional advice and food demos.

More than 35 agencies came together on May 13th to inform community seniors on everything from health and fitness to Medicare, insurance, legal services and library programs.

Pinecrest Gardens recently announced their 2015-2016 Jazz Season lineup. The schedule will include Grammy Award winning musicians and National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters.

Maintenance on the Bel Aire Canal and Maral Estates Canal sections was completed as of May 18. Visit the Palmetto Bay website for before and after photos of the canal improvements.

Following the installation of cameras at four intersections in Pinecrest, drivers will see a 30-day warning period that began May 11, during which no fines will be handed down.

The Village of Pinecrest has been designated as a “Community of Respect” by the Anti-Defamation League, and all five public schools within the Village have been designated as “No Place for Hate” schools.

Palmetto Middle School was recognized as the Top Overall Middle School out of 60 participating schools in the Fairchild Challenge.

Palmer Trinity junior, and founder of the South Florida Fund for Retired Law Enforcement K-9s, Adam Block was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Petco Foundation on May 7th. The fund offers financial assistance to K-9 owners faced with large veterinarian bills.

South Miami Police Chief Rene Landa was awarded the prestigious Fred Maas Outstanding Leadership Award.

Jennifer Lopez, The Children’s Miracle Network & Nicklaus Children’s Hospital have joined forces via a “Miracle Band” initiative to help raise funds for the construction of the 212,000 ft2 Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion, to support emergency & trauma preparedness and to enhance globally recognized centers for excellence at the hospital.

In honor of the 5th annual Miami Film Month, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, along with CineVisun and Black Film and Media Group is launching a “Show the World Miami” video contest, encouraging area residents to showcase what they love most about Miami via a two-minute video for a chance to win a $3,000 grand prize. “Our goal with the ‘Show the World Miami’ contest is to provide local filmmakers with a platform to showcase Miami through the artistry of the film lens,” says GMCVB Chairman and ACT Productions, Inc. President & CEO, Bruce Orosz. “Whether it’s our beaches, our heritage neighborhoods, our creative neighborhoods or our expanding downtown skyline, Miami offers filmmakers a variety of scenic shots where the magic of films can be made.”

GULLIVER SPECIAL OLYMPICS 5K

Gulliver Preparatory, in partnership with Special Olympics Florida, recently hosted its annual “Special Olympics Sponsor an Athlete 5k Run/ Walk.” The charitable event featured a certified 5K course that made its way through the beautiful streets of the City of Pinecrest. Funds raised went towards the mission of the Miami-Dade chapter of Special Olympics Florida, an organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The start line was located at Gulliver Preparatory School, and the finish line at the school’s Sean Taylor Memorial Field, where participants got a chance to wind down at the event’s “Olympic Village,” which featured live musical entertainment, complimentary food and beverages and a slew of other activities.

Get ready for mini-golf, Gables-style. Building off of the success of previous programs at the museum, this year’s nine-hole playable and interactive golf exhibit is inspired by international places and landmarks, paying homage to he Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Ayers Rock in Australia, El Gran Jaguar in Guatemala, downtown Grenada in Spain and the National Mall in Washington, DC. The course also features local landmarks, such as Coral Gables’ Alhambra Water Tower and Miami’s Tobacco Road. “Golf is the perfect summer pastime and this exhibit shows the creativity and design talent of local students, contractors and design professionals who submitted themes for each of the nine mini-golf holes,” said Christine Rupp, Director of the Coral Gables Museum. “Adults and children will not want to miss this whimsical putt-putt course in air-conditioned comfort inside the Museum, complete with a proshop and starter shack.”

DINO-MANIA AT ZOO MIAMI

Due to popular demand, Dinosaurs LIVE! will remain at Zoo Miami through July 5, 2015 with 22 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs and displays that look like the real animals that once existed. These extinct creatures will remain on “life support” in this extraordinary outdoor Jurassic adventure.

Open daily during normal zoo operating hours, this exhibit will continue to transport guests to a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth. “We’re excited to announce that Dinosaurs LIVE! will remain open during the premiere of the highly anticipated Jurassic World movie in mid-June and through our Independence Day weekend activities.

More than 250,000 visitors have already enjoyed experiencing these realistic creatures come to life and by the time it closes in early July, we expect that over 330,000 people will have seen them at Zoo Miami,” said Zoo Miami Director Eric Stephens.

POLLUTION SOLUTION WINNERS

Winners were announced for the Pinecrest Gardens Pollution Solutions video contest in which students were inspired to create awareness about environmental pollution via a short video identifying one of seven types of environmental pollution and proposing a solution for the pollution issue. The contest received entries from 15 schools in Miami-Dade county and reviewed

by Joseph Spector the VP of Operations for Ygrene Energy Fund Florida, Susannah Troner the Sustainability Initiatives Coordinator for Miami-Dade County and Lisa N. Toy, the Educational Program Coordinator for Pinecrest Gardens for creativity, problem & solution, community focus & engagement, and scientific or technical approach.

Each finalist presented their video at the Pinecrest Gardens Earth Day Festival on April 19th in front of Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner, the contest judges and 100 students, teachers and parents. First place student winners received $300 from the Village of Pinecrest and their schools received $1000 from the contest’s sponsor, Ygrene Energy Fund. Schools will use their prize money to implement an environmental project on campus.

Second place student winners received a $100 Visa Gift Card and third place student winners received a $50 Visa Gift Card.

Winners were: Grades 4-6: 1st place: Ricardo Alzetta, Federica Kauffmann, Giancarlo Mendieta, Nina Lu Sarria from The Mandelstam School; 2nd place: Elijah Perfetto Eugenia from B. In an effort to get families summer-ready Nicklaus Children’s Hospital (formerly Miami Children’s Hospital) recently launched “Please Don’t Leave Me,” a campaign to prevent heatstroke in children.

“Heatstroke can happen to anyone, anytime and anywhere, especially in South Florida,” said Malvina Duncan, RN, Safe Kids of MiamiDade County and Injury Prevention Coordinator at Nicklaus Children’s. “A child’s body heats up three to five times faster than an adults’ body, making a little one much more susceptible to heatstroke. That is why it is imperative that caregivers never leave a child unattended in a vehicle.”

In addition, the hospital also held a swim safety event in conjunction with MiamiDade Parks and Miami-Dade Fire Ocean Rescue as well as leads Safe Kids of MiamiDade, a program (and website: safekids.org) dedicated to providing safety information and tips for families around the country… and county. On an 80 degree day, the temperature inside of a car can rise 19 degrees in as little as 10 minutes, making the inside of a vehicle a dangerous place for sleeping children. www.packofdogs.org BACKGROUND: As acting Managing Partner of Imagery Creative Communications, Fernandez spends much of her day immersed in the world of corporate marketing and communications, but it was her role as mom to three boys that sparked the idea for Pack of Dogs. “My children and I were looking for volunteer opportunities and kept hitting a roadblock,” she says. “Even when we reached out to charities, they did not have any activities organized for children. That’s when we decided to create our own portal that connects kids with existing charity work.”

UPCOMING PLANS: Fernandez hopes to inspire more and more pack members to join the group, with younger siblings and friends taking over for her existing pack as they grow.

She also has hopes for a possible scholarship as well as expansion into other parts of the country with new chapters. “Eventually, the Pack of Dogs can become a force within the community that can create the community leaders of tomorrow, children that already know what the feeling of giving back is,” she says.

“Kids should learn to give back at an early age so we foster this experience early on, ultimately creating the community leaders of tomorrow.”

ABOUT PACK OF DOGS: Launched in September 2014, Pack of Dogs works with charities to provide volunteers between the ages of 10 and 18. Charities submit events electronically to the organization and, once deemed child-appropriate, the event is e-blasted to POD’s database. “The exciting aspect of the group is that the volunteering opportunities vary,” says Fernandez. “The kids can sign up for what they are interested in and it does not become monotonous.” The pack now boasts more than 50 members and Fernandez says events often see entire families come out to connect with community. “Our first outing was visiting Chapman Partnership for the Homeless,” she says. “We played sports with the kids, conducted arts and crafts activities and brought them holiday gifts. I knew we were on to something when there was nothing but silence in the car on the way home after that experience.

This is not about purchasing a gala ticket and making a donation. This is about the real experience of volunteering and being directly connected to the cause.” And about that name? Fernandez says though it was inspired by her own running joke about her sons and their many friends, it has a deeper meaning. “Packs usually stick together, creating a bond that lasts an eternity.”

Electronic Music For A Cause

N MAY 16TH, Pinecrest Gardens held its f irst Banyan Fest, a charitable electronic music festival.

Held in the famous “Banyan Bowl,”Banyan Fest was the result of two high school juniors’ hard work and organization. Josh Benzadon and Elliott Saruski, students at Miami Palmetto Senior High School, organized the event as part of a community service project.

As Josh Benzadon explains, the original idea for Banyan Fest arose from the fact that many teenagers were unable to attend music festivals either because of age limits or lack of parental consent. Many large electronic music festivals, such as Ultra, are known for widespread drug and alcohol abuse, leaving parents and teenagers alike apprehensive about attending. Inspired by their wish to spread their own love and passion for music in the community in a safe environment and, at the same time, aid a good cause, the pair chose to organize the event and donate all proceeds to the organization Teens Against Distracted Driving (TADD).

Benzadon and Saruski chose to give their proceeds to TADD because, as Elliott Saruski explained, “People text and drive all the time, and no one has been trying to change anything about it in the community.” In order to ensure safety at the event, Banyan Fest had policemen at the front door, a strict age policy (13-18), and a rigid drug and alcohol ban.

The electronic music festival was a hit among the teenagers, with kids of all ages arriving to enjoy the music. Tickets were ten dollars, and locally renowned DJs such as Borromeo, Giorgetti, and BEILZ played their music, with various strobe lights and a screen in the background completing the effect of the event. Attendees received t-shirts and thumb bands, enjoying the music between the hours of 7 and 11 p.m. There was widespread approval and support for the event, with some of those in attendance even donating extra money for the cause.

One attendee, Sydney Spector, expressed her support for the event, explaining she was for the event because “[Benzadon and Saruski] didn’t just organize a traditional fundraising event. By having a music festival kids had lot of fun, but were also able to support a good cause”. There was widespread agreement with her statement, with teenagers enjoying the music until the event’s very end.

Benzadon and Saruski plan on continuing Banyan Fest in the future, explaining they want to make it “bigger and better” next year. “There’s still so much we can do,” says Benzadon.

This year each school is saying goodbye to two longtime educators who have made a difference in the lives of not just their students, but faculty and administration as well. Here’s a little about the four women who are saying goodbye to school but hello to new adventures.

JANICE ENNIS

Fifth Grade Teacher, Palmetto Elementary TEACHING 29 YEARS Mrs. Ennis, our beloved fifth grade teacher at Palmetto Elementary is retiring this year after 29 years of service.

Mrs. Ennis began teaching in 1986 as an English teacher at Trenton High School near Gainesville. She then moved to McNicol Middle School in Hallendale, and finally, in 1992, came to Palmetto Elementary.

That year she was a third grade teacher.

Watching the expression on her student’s faces has been one of Mrs. Ennis’ favorite parts of teaching (as well as summers off with her own children). “Learn to be flexible and if you don’t enjoy teaching find another career,” she says of advice for new teachers. “The children know when you’re not happy.” When asked what her fondest memory was, she told us it was the fifth grade Hidden Lake camping trip.

Art Teacher, Palmetto Elementary TEACHING 36 YEARS Ms.Cummins, our artsy art teacher from Palmetto Elementary School is sadly retiring this year. She has worked with Miami Dade County Public School’s for 36 years.

We will miss her hands-on, interactive art class very much. Ms.Cummins has known since the age of 5 that “painting was fun and special” to her. Anybody that has had the pleasure of being her student knows she loves art and painting. When asked what she planned to do after her retirement she said “I will keep painting and exhibiting!” Although she is not sure whether she will teach again she may look into the school of continuing studies at the University of Miami. She has taught her students so much and to love the art of painting. Although Ms. Cummins will be retiring we can still catch some of her art, she has been invited to paint all over the country at eleven National Parks for Artist-in-Residence Programs.

Some of her future exhibits will run from November 2015 through January, 2016 for The Centennial Celebration of Our National Parks, and the Tandem Solo Exhibits at Biscayne National Park and Big Cypress National Park. - Katie Herskowitz

First Grade Teacher, Pinecrest Elementary TEACHING 45 YEARS Having taught at nine different schools (she joined Pinecrest in 2003), Linda FondasLantieigne cites first grade as her favorite grade level. “I love to see the joy in the children’s eyes as they learn new things,” she says. Fondas-Lantieigne has left a legacy of excellence in teaching, as was easily seen through the many wonderful projects that were displayed inside and outside of her classroom throughout the year. She was an advocate of reading and began the “Book in a Bag” program at Pinecrest. This initiative encouraged many children over her twelve years at Pinecrest to fall in love with reading. In 1995 she met fellow Pinecrest teacher Minna Miller and the two became friends while working together at Coral Reef Elementary.

Media Specialist, Pinecrest Elementary TEACHING 34 YEARS Starting her career at Rainbow Park Elementary in Opa-Locka in 1971, Minna Miller worked at five other local elementary schools (including Coral Reef and Vineland) before joining Pinecrest in 2001. As the Media Specialist, Miller was in charge of the WPEN morning show and coordinated the numerous students each year who participated as the broadcasting crew. She also was in charge of the Student Council, Fairchild Challenge school wide initiative, and parent tours throughout the school year. She began the ever-popular Birthday Book Club at Pinecrest and oversaw the school’s Accelerated Reader Program.

Earlier in the school year the hallway leading up to the art and music suites was officially named “Minna Miller’s Unity Way,”and decorated with flags representing the countries of the many students who attend Pinecrest.

PAL Summer Camps Create Positive Experiences

I

T’S BETTER TO BUILD YOUTH THAN TO MEND ADULTS. That’s the concept that many leadership organizations have, choosing wisely to invest in building healthy relationships among young people and police officers. The City of Coral Gables Police Athletic League, also known as PAL, is based on this belief that young people, if reached early enough, can develop a strong positive attitude toward police officers, teaching them life-long lessons that they will use as they reach adulthood and learn to become responsible adults. I can tell you Coral Gables Interim from experience that it works.

Police Chief Ed Hudak For many years, I have witnessed the powerful effect that mentoring has on the lives of teenagers and young adults who are in need of an authority figure – a helping hand that can guide them through these formative years. Not everyone is lucky enough to have the presence of a caring parent who can teach youth all about responsible values and good citizenship.

PAL is a mentoring program that relies on athletic and community service to connect the younger generation with figures of authority in law enforcement. The programs offered by PAL promote health and fitness, the values of sportsmanship and fair play, helping to reduce the chances for juveniles to choose irresponsible behavior and avoid the path of delinquency. Our Coral Gables Police Department is proud to be involved with the community through PAL. The upcoming summer months bring children a much-deserved break from homework and other school activities. As we do throughout the year, the Coral Gables Police Department is here to ensure the safety of all children, an effort that takes a special meaning during the lazy days of summer. This summer, the Coral Gables PAL is offer-

ing the following camps designed for youth to interact with our police officers and strengthen the ties of mutual respect: Soccer camp on June 8-12, Baseball camp on June 22-26, Community Service camp on June 29-July 2 and July 27-30, and Marine camp on July 6-10 and July 20-24, 2015. T

HROUGH MY YEARS WORKING AS A PERSONAL TRAINER as well as an avid exercise enthusiast in my own personal life, I have come to two realizations regarding most people’s exercise programs. First, most people want to lose weight; Second, most people never see results.

In the personal training business, when a prospective client is interested in your services, you often will sit down with him or her and discuss the respective goals. Nine times out of ten, goal number one is “weight loss.” Why do I put the cynical quotation marks on that phrase? Because nine times out of ten, body weight is completely irrelevant. Most people need to change their body composition; to build muscle mass and lower body-fat percentage. Some of the most dramatic changes I have ever seen have been a net weight change of only a few pounds but a shockingly different before and after!

Now, lets look at point number two as this pertains to the overall subject of this very article: results – or lack thereof. The unfortunate truth about the fitness industry is that day in and day out, ninety-nine percent of people in the gym look the same every day, every month and every year. Before we understand why this is, and how to fix it, lets get one thing clear: if you started exercising to change your body and you look the same after a few months, something is wrong with what you are doing.

Exercise is not rocket science and neither is changing your body. Unfortunately, there are a lot of misconceptions and errors that tend to screw up people’s success. Once again, we have two main reasons why most people don’t see results: First, too much cardio and not enough resistance training and second, a bad diet!

Cardio does not “burn fat.” It allows for greater caloric expenditure and creates a net effect over the twelve hours or so of greater fat metabolism – that’s about it. I’ve worked with plenty of marathon runners who have wanted to get rid of their belly fat and love handles. Resistance training, which builds muscle, is really what changes your body. If you want toned legs, a tighter butt, or to get rid of that jiggle in the back of your arms that’s from weight training. Even more important, the more muscle the more calories you burn and the easier it is to stay lean. You don’t have to become a bodybuilder, but training with weights about three times a week will do more to change your body than all the marathon cardio sessions you can think of.

As for bad diet... fat loss happens in the kitchen. It does not require a million different supplements or any complex, painful diets. A diet high in protein (because protein is very filling, and actually uses a lot of calories to digest) with moderate amounts of carbohydrates coming from fruits and vegetables will change your body. It really is that simple! In all my years in the fitness industry I can’t think of one person that told me they became overweight from eating chicken, green beans and apples.

Exercise is great for our health and longevity, but many of us decide to start working out to change our physical appearance in some way. If you’ve been working out for a fair amount of times (a few months) and have not seen any difference in the mirror – you are doing something wrong and chances are it’s not enough resistance training and poor diet choices. Working out and changing your body should be rewarding. Make it that way by making the right choices.

OR CUTLER BAY SOLAR SOLUTIONS CEO RAUL VERGARA, RENEWABLE energy isn’t just a business, it’s his passion. The Cuban-born, European-bred business owner has done more than 100 installations in the two years since incorporating his business, bringing both his knowledge of and awe for solar technology to residents in Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay among others.

“I’ve always been an environmentalist,” says Vergara. “The technology of solar power, the way the energy is transmitted and how we collect it... just the amount of energy that the sun gives off is fascinating. There is so much energy to be harnessed and we harness such a small part of it.”

Vergara, who relocated to Miami from Spain in 1979, began his green journey in 2008, working with local mayors to create a coalition that eventually formed the Clean Energy Green Corridor that encompasses Pinecrest, South Miami, Coral Gables, Palmetto Bay, Cutler Bay and Miami Shores. Drawing on his background in both sales and engineering, Vergara launched Cutler Bay Solar Solutions in 2013 and saw the interest in “going green” explode over the past few years. In fact, Vergara says his clientele is so varied he has no average customer.

“I service the high-end customer as well as the average single-family household,” he says. “We’ve done 104 installations and everyone is different in its own way, but they all share the same concern that we need to make a difference and change our ways.”

Changing those ways also varies from client to client… and not all require the immediate installation of solar roof panels. According to Vergara, the company often finds small ways to save money and energy during their initial inspection of the property (they offer a no-cost energy survey to potential clients). “We look at the water heater, AC, lighting, windows, roof,” he says, noting that swapping out an electric water heater for a solar version can save up to 80% per month. “We don’t promote solar panels, we look at how we can help you save energy. Even just repairing faulty equipment will save money.”

For those who wish to take the next step, the company puts the property through another series of inspections, determining everything from directional exposure to the amount of space available for panels. Once satisfied that the home can handle solar energy, and with the determination of the bare minimum needed to run the home, they then size and design a system specifically for that property. “We look at where they go on the roof, how they can attach. We pull all the permits and have everything approved,” Vergara says. “We meet hurricane codes as the panels are impact resistant. The panels Wind uplift resistance to 175 mph. even strengthen the roof.”

In addition to those benefits, Vergara says more and more homeowners are looking into solar as a result of the Ygrene initiative, allowing owners within the green corridor to fold financing into their property taxes. As of this summer Vergara says his clients are generating about 10 megawatts of electricity per week and creating green benefits equivalent to taking 200 cars off of the streets. “That’s the kind of difference we’re making,” he says. “Not just as a company, but our customers as well.”

Looking forward, Vergara hopes to use his passion to inspire fellow community members to “join the solar revolution” and to continue to share his knowledge of renewable energy with more and more homeowners. Says Vergara “Education is the key to success with this.”

Why Ballet Technique is Crucial to Magnet Dance Tryouts

A

S MENTIONED IN MY LAST ARTICLE, WE LIVE IN AN AREA where we are bombarded with choices. Not only do we have choices for our kids regarding which dance studio or ballet school they are going to attend, but we also have choices regarding what academic school they are going to attend. You can send your child to their home school, you can send them to private school, or you can even send them to a dance magnet school. Many of my students do go to these schools, but I have to say that they are not a substitute for an excellent after-school dance/ballet program. While many magnet schools do offer good dance programs, your child will not be getting everything he or she needs, technique-wise, at a dance magnet school. I have gotten a little ahead of myself….Let’s backtrack and talk about how your child can even get into a magnet dance school. (hint: Ballet, Ballet, Ballet!)

All of these magnet dance auditions require each child to take a ballet class.

That is the first step in the audition process.

Hopefully your child is already in a dance or ballet school taking ballet classes, but if he or she isn’t, that should be your first step. Jazz, tap, hip hop, lyrical and other classes offered at dance studios are great and certainly do help in the audition process because those classes teach rhythm, coordination and most importantly, the ability to pick up different styles and combinations, but ballet class is where each student learns proper technique.

You can not fake ballet technique. It isn’t about how to point your toe; it is about how you execute a perfect Tendue from first position.

Other aspects of the audition for middle school (it is a little different for high school) may include a jazz or hip hop combination after the ballet class, a solo and sometimes even a ballet vocabulary test. The solo is usually no longer than one minute and it is best to get one of your child’s teachers to choreograph it. For a fee, your studio can usually provide you with a solo that will highlight your child’s best abilities.

High school dance auditions are a bit different as your child will have to take a modern class along with the ballet class. Modern is taught in a lot of dance schools but it is also a staple of a good ballet school. Modern is similar to ballet in that it follows a specific technique. Jazz, lyrical and hip hop, although fun, don’t follow a strict technical syllabus. There are various different modern techniques like Graham, Horton and Limon, and an audition for a magnet high school will lead students through a series of modern exercises to see if they can grasp the techniques.

Let’s say your child attends a magnet middle school, then a magnet high school for dance and then decides to audition, for example, for Juilliard or Boston Conservatory for dance. He or she will be expected to take the very same kind of audition. Ballet class and modern class, and sometimes a solo, are all a part of that audition process. At the Juilliard audition, they even make a cut after the ballet class.

Ballet is important. Ballet is important even if your child wants to dance on Broadway.

Ballet is important if your child wants to do figure skating or gymnastics or even sports.

Ballet teaches grace and posture and builds muscles to help run fast, jump high and even kick a ball. If you are about to embark on the journey through magnet dance tryouts with your child, make sure that ballet is your top priority.

Boat Handling Tips to Maximize Ride Comfort

I

T IS AMAZING TO NOTE HOW many experienced boaters are unaware of how to use the trim tabs to vastly improve the ride – including professional boat test writers.

The most common example is the bow quartering sea situation. Deep-V hulls have an inherent tendency to lean into the wind. Say you are running in a bow quartering sea at about ten o’clock off the port bow – your boat will be leaning to port. You (and all your guests) will notice that the boat is slamming into the waves and creating much spray – to everyone’s discomfort. This happens because the slab side of the hull is making first contact with the waves, not to the hull’s V-shape bottom.

The solution is simple – use the trim tabs to make the boat level, or better yet, to roll the boat down wind a point or two. In doing so, the V is doing what it is supposed to do, and most of the spray will pass under the hull – not away from the hull and into your face! Sometimes a last second quick jerk of the steering wheel away from the bow quartering sea (or cruiser wake) will accomplish the same thing or further enhance a softer entry.

Medical Marijuana for Pets?

A

S MORE OWNERS LOOK FOR “NATURAL” ALTERNATIVES TO CONVENTIONAL pharmaceuticals for their pets, support for medicinal marijuana as a veterinary drug is gaining ground. The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA) is officially encouraging research on the safety, dosage, and uses of marijuana in animals. Medical marijuana for humans is legal in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Its recreational use is decriminalized in Colorado and Washington. Even though its use remains illegal under Federal law, the Justice Department has agreed not to challenge state laws as long as they do not conflict with certain federal enforcement priorities. This all translates into a legal marijuana business that is blooming rapidly.

As expected, there is also a growing market catering to aging and chronically ill pets.

Marijuana is being prepared for pets in some dispensaries as tinctures or edible pet treats to allegedly treat pain, allergies, anxiety and lack of appetite, among other conditions.

But is marijuana a valid veterinary therapeutic agent?

First, lets start with the obvious: Cannabis use in animals is illegal in all 50 states.

and Drug administration is sending warning letters to all companies selling Cannabisbased products for pets. Some of these companies are using products derived from hemp in hopes to avoid legal repercussions, though hemp is considered a controlled substance by the US Drug Enforcement Agency.

So what is all the fuss with the use of Cannabis in our pets if it has the potential to benefit them? Cannabis is poisonous to animals with no scientific data backing its medical use and no industry guidelines. As human consumption increases, Cannabis poisoning in animals is becoming more common. Poisoning occurs most commonly when a pet eats foods such as butter, brownies and cookies that have been prepared using the active cannabinoids found in marijuana. Dogs are gorgers. They don’t eat just one brownie; they eat the whole tray. When a dog eats that amount he/she will not only get sick, but can possibly die. A dog that is “high” cannot breath properly or even vomit. Unlike humans, dogs develop signs at very low doses that can last longer than in humans, many times lasting days. Signs of Cannabis intoxication include urine dribbling, very low or high heart rate, respiratory depression, and unconsciousness.

Marijuana is a toxic plant for pets with some potential for medicinal use. This potential justifies its investigation through proper scientific research so we can determine its efficacy in animals, therapeutic dosages, toxic dose, and set guidelines for quality control procedures. Pet owners need to wait and avoid experimenting with their pets.

Exploring the Roanoke Valley

HEN I TOLD MY FRIENDS I WAS heading to Roanoke, Virginia they asked, “What’s there?” to which I responded, “I don’t know, but I’m going to find out.” Four days later I was back home and wishing I had had more time to explore.

Once I arrived I was steered to the Texas Tavern for lunch. The tavern, founded in 1930, is known for its chili but what I really wanted was a hot dog so I asked for one… with ketchup.

There was a silence I couldn’t decipher and a sneer crept up on the cook’s face. “You mean Sissy Sauce?” I started mumbling something and was backing up to escape when laughter erupted from the patrons at the counter. Apparently, ketchup is frowned upon because it masks the flavor of the meat but they keep some on hand for unsuspecting tourists like me.

Hot dog in hand I toured the historic Market District with all its vendors and shops and landed at the O. Winston Link Museum. Let me preface this by saying I am not a train person, so I was taken by surprise when I sat spellbound watching his video. His photographic works were mesmerizing and I was so intrigued that I bought his book. However, if you are a train aficionado, you mustn’t miss the Railwalk and the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

Next stop was Black Dog Salvage, where I could have spent hours. One could get lost exploring the 40,000 square feet of salvaged vintage architectural items.

After my first day exploring, I had several options for dinner. There was Lucky or the Wildwood Smokehouse but I eventually settled in at Wasena City Tap Room and Grill for some great pub food and one of the 31 craft beers on tap.

The next morning I laced up my sneakers and made my way to historic Grandin Village. It’s a charming 1920’s neighborhood with Pops Ice Cream and Soda Bar, a fabulously restored 1920s theatre, Viva la Cupcake and my favorite, Too Many Books, a bookstore that offers 75,000 books, which include out of print and antiquarian books.

(Can I add… I found my childhood favorites, The Hardy Boys.)

Realizing I hadn’t eaten breakfast, I decided to head to Salem, a small town just a hop, skip and a jump from Roanoke and have lunch at the Blue Apron. The menu changes seasonally but if you luck out and catch the shrimp and creamy Gruyere grits, you’re in the money.

I was disappointed I missed the Farmer’s Market, but in talking to a few people milling around, I quickly learned that here was a community that truly cares and takes care of their own as exhibited by Feed the Need program which distributes excess and blemished produce to organizations that fed the hungry.

Next on my trail was Parkway Brewing Co. with its beer, picnic tables, smokers and corn hole. I quickly surmised I would be here for a while. There is so much to do in Roanoke it’s hard to fit it all in. I had hoped to go biking and hike to McAfee Knob but time was running out and there was one place I didn’t want to miss, the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, which suffered the highest per capita D-Day losses. My mood was somber as I walked through the gardens, past the portrait busts, the flag garden, and ever so slowly walked past the 4,413 names of those who gave their life, but nothing prepared me for the Invasion Tableau, a recreation of the beach at Normandy.

I stood in silence at the bronze sculptures in the water with pain, fear and pride etched in their faces.

Unfortunately, my next stop was the airport but as my plane took off I could feel the Blue Ridge Mountains calling me back home.

Hot Weather and Heatstrokes for Dogs

S WE APPROACH THE WARMER MONTHS IN MIAMI REMEMBER HOT WEATHER can cause heat stroke and even death if you do not use common sense. An animal going into heat stroke may collapse or appear very depressed. It may be panting frantically. The gums may be bright red. At any sign of heat stroke, use a fan to cool the air and wet the animal down with lukewarm water (do not use cold water, as the sudden temperature change can shock their system and lead to more harm) and call your local veterinarian if you suspect overheating.

Be sure your animals have access to shade (it’s twenty degrees cooler than in direct sunlight) and plenty of fresh cool water. If possible, freeze a large block of ice and place it in your dog’s water dish to help keep water cool throughout the day. If traveling with your dog, take water with you in a dog thermos with an attached drinking bowl.

Long haired dogs bred for colder climates, such as Huskies, Golden Retrievers and St. Bernards need regular brushing in hot weather to help thin out their undercoat of fur. You can clip long haired coats for the warmer months but do not shave as this leaves the skin prone to sunburn.

Commercial dry pet food creates internal heat.

The combination of hot weather and dry food can contribute to a heat overload. If you have not done it before, hot weather is the time for sure to introduce more moisture into your dog’s diet. That means simple fresh things like, green beans, spinach, broccoli and other green vegetables and fruits that are approved for dogs like, apples (not the core or seeds), blueberries, watermelon (without seeds) and strawberries. Ideally, feed your dog a home prepared diet.

Do not run or exercise your dog in blazing heat. Dogs don’t sweat; it is easy for them to develop a heat overload that can lead to a heat stroke. Remember, knowing your dog’s threshold for heat can save his or her life. If you have a brachycephalic dog such as a bulldog or pugs avoid taking them out for very long in the summer as they can’t withstand the heat the same way other four legged companions can.

Most importantly do not leave your dog in hot cars, even if the weather does not appear to be sizzling hot outside. Did you know on an 85 degree day it takes only 10 minutes for the interior of your parked car to climb to 102 degrees with the windows up and the car turned off. Leaving windows partially open doesn’t drop the temperature inside the vehicle.

Adjust your schedule slightly to better accommodate your furry family member in the warmer months and please remember to remind anyone who cares for your pet while you are away of the dangers of dogs getting overheated.

1. Letting your children dictate your dating life is a big mistake. Listen, most kids will be resistant to their dad dating for various reasons, but not to date because little Jimmy throws a tantrum as you walk out the door will land you in the World of Loneliness.

2. Guys, kids and women get attached. Be sure you have strong feelings for someone before you bring them into the family fold.

3. Spend time with your children without your new paramom. Kids need oneon-one time with you and even though you might think you are giving them attention when you all are together, kids see it differently.

4. It’s understandable that the heart wants what the heart wants and typically that is time with your lady friend, but tread lightly. If you have always taken your son to a basketball game and now you start taking her in his place, guess who is going to be hurt and not feel like a priority? If you want to take her, take her another night.

5. Be sensitive to the fact that the woman you’re dating has children also. Navigating that minefield can be exceedingly frustrating, but be patient and keep things in perspective.

6. Acknowledge that being a divorced dad you cannot be all things to all people.

There will be times that you have to choose your priority. Be at peace with that.

7. There is nothing wrong in wanting to have time to yourself or with your friends.

Take it. You need it.

8. In a marriage, it’s easy to lose yourself. Now that you are divorced, find the person you lost and be honest with your dates about who you are. Don’t be who you think she wants you to be.

9. I know being a divorced dad equates with having several balls up in the air at the same time and then throw dating into the mix and you’re looking for shortcuts to make life easier. Enter the world of texting. I believe texting has its benefits, but when you are newly dating someone, please don’t text “goodnight.”

Pick up the phone.

10. Be romantic. Be spontaneous and be open to new things. Enjoy this second chance to love and be loved. Oh and guys, be a gentleman.

11. It’s amazing what opening a door will do for a woman.

12. It’s OK and at times necessary to share information about your ex, but an entire dinner date? I recognize that if you are newly divorced your ex can still be very much on your mind, but try to keep it to yourself. If you constantly feel the need to talk about her, it might be a sign you haven’t let go and you’re not emotionally ready to date.

13. Take stock of yourself. Do you need to get to the gym? Update your haircut or wardrobe? Expand your circle of friends and/or interests? Remember, you are not just a dad but a single guy with an exciting chapter ahead of you.

Communities in Schools of Miami (CIS of Miami) raised $115,000 through its annual fundraiser, the “Over The Rainbow: Where Dreams Come True” gala, in support of dropout prevention programs including tutoring, mentoring and financial literacy to South Florida children in grades K-12. The gala took place on May 2nd at the InterContinental Miami Hotel.Through a school-based coordinator, CIS connects students and their families to needed community resources, and provides comprehensive wrap-around services including mentoring, tutoring, life skills development, case management, counseling, job readiness and more.
