FR O M T HE PU B LIS HER

Happy Fourth of July!

I

F YOU COULDN’T TELL BY THE ABOVE AVERAGE temperatures outside, summer is most definitely upon us! As much as we love this time of year, it also means that hurricane season has began. We have been very fortunate here the last few years, and hope that our good luck continues. However, it’s extremely important to be informed and prepared, so that you’re never caught off guard if a storm comes. For all things hurricane related, including some interesting hurricane facts, a cabinet check-list, and how to prepare your children for a storm, don’t miss the article ‘Tis the Season’ (page 18). Summer also happens to be a busy time for travel, whether it’s a nearby staycation or an international trip. If you happen to be traveling overseas, be sure to read Luis Ortega’s article, “Safety Tips for International Travel” (page 30), for expert advice you may not have thought of. Aside from travel, another summer staple is swimming in the pool or at the beach. It’s a great activity for the whole family to enjoy on these hot days, and a good way for your pet to cool off as well. If you’re a pet owner, check out the article “Summer Water Safety Tips for Your Pet” (page 45), for tips on enjoying the water with your best buddy. And don’t forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), Instagram (@thefloridavillager), and Google+ (The Florida Villager). And from all of us at The Florida Villager...Happy Fourth of July! Sincerely,

Tis the Season W

STOCK UP, BOARD UP AND LOOK UP TO THE SKIES… HURRICANE SEASON IS OFFICIALLY HERE.

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

HETHER YOU’RE AN OLD PRO OR A SOUTH FLORIDA NEWBIE, HURricane season (which officially runs from June 1 through November 30) has Miami residents glued to their TVs and racing to stock up on supplies. And while early forecasts by The Weather Channel predict low numbers of named storms-nine named storms, five hurricanes and one major hurricane to be specific--anyone who has been through a storm knows it’s better to be prepared than caught off guard. Ready to get started? Here are the basics on the 2015 season.

JUST THE FACTS

Think you know your hurricanes? Maybe not. Dr. Angela Colbert of the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science shares some of her favorites facts about these powerful weather events. • During the life cycle of a hurricane, it can expend as much energy as 10,000 nuclear bombs. (NASA) • One of the men who invented the SaffirSimpson scale (Bob Simpson) that we use to classify hurricane strength category was still contributing to the field up to his passing at the age of 102! • It is due to a special effect from Earth’s rotation and spherical shape, known as the Coriolis Effect, that give hurricanes their familiar spiral pattern. • Hurricanes spin counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere due to the Coriolis Effect (no this does not apply to toilets as they are too small, I know, I checked!). • Approximately every three-to-four years there is a named tropical system (usually a (subtropical storm) that forms off the coast of Florida before the start of hurricane season on June 1st. • The first intentional flight into a hurricane occurred on July 27, 1943 for a storm over the Gulf of Mexico by Army Air Force Colonel Joseph Duckworth

THE EYE OF THE STORM

Most of us in South Florida have been through the prep phase of the season more than a few times. But for those who have never experienced an actual storm the scary part is usually the actual event. So what to do during the storm? Miami-Dade County suggests the following: • Monitor your radio or television for weather updates and instructions from public safety officials. • Stay indoors, preferably in a room with few or no windows. • Take your emergency kit and disaster supplies with you if you move from room to room. • If flooding threatens your home, turn off electricity at the main breaker. • Use flashlights, not candles or kerosene lamps, as your light source. • If you lose power, turn off all major appliances. • Avoid using the phone and do not take a bath or shower during the storm. • Fight the temptation to go outside during the “eye of the storm”. There’s only a brief period of calm before hurricane force winds return. • Keep children informed about what’s happening and watch for signs of stress. • Keep animals in their carriers.

THE NAME GAME

Ever wondered exactly how how and why storms get their names? According to The Weather Channel, though early meteorologists named storms after the day they struck (see the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane in the Keys) nowadays they tend more toward the Bob, Floyd or Andrew. Early 1900s Australian forecaster Clement Wragge was the first to name storms, plucking their monikers from a list of politicians he disliked, a practice that inspired the novel “Storm” which later inspired military forecasters to name Pacific storms after girlfriends and wives. Though the U.S. Weather Bureau frowned upon the idea, in 1954 the Interdepartmental Hurricane Conference and the U.S. Weather Bureau gave in to the practice. In 1979 mens names were added to the list. Today the World Meteorological Organization creates and maintains six lists, which are reused every six years. A sampling of this year’s choices include: Ana, Claudette, Henri, Ida, Joaquin,Odette, Peter, Rose,Teresa, Victor and Wanda.

CABINET CHECK-LIST

Sure, we all know the basics. Flashlight, batteries, water…but what about the little things? Experts suggest having enough supplies for up to two weeks post-storm (and those who weathered Andrew can attest), so we went straight to the source. We asked--who else?-- our friends at Publix just what to grab off their shelves pre-storm. Here are their suggestions: • Baby food and formula • Bottled Water - 2 gallons per person per day and 1 gallon per pet per day • Bread • Canned meats, pasta, fruits, vegetables, puddings and soups • High-energy foods such as peanut butter, nuts, jelly, crackers, cookies, cereals, dried fruit and trail mix • Ice • Instant coffee and tea • Pet food • Powdered milk • Special dietary foods • Sport drinks and individually packaged juice • Sugar, powdered creamer, salt and pepper

PREPARING YOUR CHILDREN FOR A STORM

Young children thrive on routine and can become anxious when those day to day events are disrupted by natural disasters such as a hurricane or tropical storm. As another hurricane season approaches, it’s important that parents talk to their children about emergency situations, says Dr. Sara Rivero-Conil, a licensed psychologist with the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Department of Psychology. A child may worry that they may become separated from their family or whether their house can withstand a storm. Here are five suggestions to help your family prepare for hurricane season: 1. Create an emergency plan with your family. Discuss details such as where you would go if you needed to leave your home. Write down important phone numbers for your children or put them in your child’s phone (if applicable). 2. Prepare for the storm. If a storm is approaching, include your children in the preparations such as checking off items from your preparedness list, testing flashlights and packing. Remind your teenage children to fill their cars with gas. 3. Watch television together. Television, in limited quantities, is a good way to learn about the impending storm. Dr. Sara Rivero-Conil cautions that watching too much news coverage can also increase a child’s anxiety. Watch small amounts of news together for updates and then switch off the TV and enjoy other family-centered activities, such as board games, to help create a balance and decrease anxiety. Remember, graphic images of storm damage can also be upsetting to young children. 4. Get ready to go. If your family lives in an evacuation zone, be prepared by having your children help with packing. 5. Work together after the storm. Once the storm has passed, include your children in pickup and cleanup. Set aside time to talk with your children about how they feel after the storm.

OR MOST MIDDLE SCHOOL SPIRIT TEAMS, SHOWING OFF THEIR SKILLS in a parade can be a highlight of their year. But for the spirit team at Palmetto Middle School walking in just any parade wasn’t enough. They wanted to walk in THE parade. “My bucket list has always included watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in person,” says PMS Science Department Chair and Spirit Team Coach Terri Ortiz, who spearheaded the process. But watching and participating are two very different things. Inspired by the talents of her three-year-old squad, Ortiz began researching ways to join in on the production, which has been around since 1924.

In May, Ortiz heard back. Spirit of America productions invited the team to audition by video. “I held my breath, filled out the forms and sent them the video of our winning FCDA State Championship performance,” says Ortiz. “I heard back from them a day later with a formal invite to join the top 600 performers from across America.” Since then, Ortiz has secured commitments from 16 of her 40 squad members to attend the festivities in New York this November. The six-day trip will cost the team about $2,100 per child (a number that includes food, activities, hotel, costumes and other expenses related to the performance) leading squad members, as well as PTA members, to seek out donations to help cover the cost.

Though it hasn’t been determined exactly how the girls will participate (options include performing opening ceremonies, marching in the parade or both), Ortiz sees the entire experience as a once-in-a-lifetime chance. “It is an incredible opportunity that few can say they have had,” she says. “I feel honored that our girls were invited and we are ready to make memories and be a part of the ultimate holiday tradition.” To donate to the trip visit pmsptsa.org and click on the “Donate” button, making sure to reference “cheer trip” in the memo or contact PTSA President Linda Dwyer at lindadwyerfl@gmail.com.

Making The Most of Summer BY JESS ROLNICK

I

T’S SUMMER; A TIME TO KICK BACK, RELAX, and lose track of the days of the week. The school year is beyond stressful, and summer just seems like the perfect two-and-a-half month time period to do absolutely nothing. I mean that’s what I thought…I planned days around my 12+ hour sleep schedule. But my idea changed when a few adults pointed something out to me: if you’re sleeping past 11 everyday, laying around and watching TV for 24 hours straight, you are wasting your summer. There are so many opportunities to create a memorable and productive summer vacation. Teen travel programs make for great chances to meet new people and experience new places. Groups travel throughout the state, country, and even abroad, providing the chance to live in and experience new places. Some programs gear teens towards studying, Group of teenagers walking in Piazza Navona enjoying few minutes of calm weather while others focus on worldly community service in the middle of the heavy rain which has hit Rome for the consecutive fourth day. projects or visiting tourist attractions. No matter the object of the trip, group teen tours are great ways to get out of the house, make new friends, and live life in a new place, even if only for a few weeks. Many local shops and chain stores hire teens starting at age 16 and up, especially during the summer. Many day camps hire younger teens as assistant counselors for younger children, and seek out older teens as junior and senior counselors. Ice cream

shops, smoothie stores, restaurants and local retail hire teenagers to work as servers and cashiers for the summer months. Getting a job is a great way to earn some pocket money, learn to work with others, and show responsibility. Community service is also a great way to stay local, get up, and give back to the community. This could include organizing large projects or working with existing ones, such as volunteering in a hospital or working in an animal shelter. In addition, many companies offer service hours for unpaid interns. With the chance to travel the world, or just simply earn some extra money and build a resume; the opportunity for a great summer is endless. So get up, get out of bed, and get started. Jessica Rolnick is an incoming senior at Miami Palmetto Senior High School with a passion for writing. She has studied journalism at both Palmetto and Gulliver schools.

Summer is here, but we are still thinking schools here in Palmetto Bay. A prior end of school year tradition was revived in 2015- Summer got a jump start June 4 at Coral Reef Park with the Palmetto Bay “Splash Bash” celebration. This was a supervised session of fun at the park that allowed kids to let off the pressure of the rigorous school-year in a safe and fun way. There are also new events to look forward to relating to our schools in 2016. There will be two back-to-school events at our parks. The first is August 8, as well as a back to school social planned for September 12. More information will be posted in the near future on

10 Things to Know About Florida Occupational Healthcare

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

W

ITH THE MOTTO “PHYSICAL THERAPY… the science of healing, the art of caring,” Florida Occupational Healthcare takes pride in the treatment of patients on a medical and personal level. Open since 1998, FOHC’s owner, Dr. Alex Pereda, has created a client-centered atmosphere dedicated to making a difference in the lives of those who visit his facility. Here are 10 things to know about FOHC.

1

2 3

4

5 6 28

DR. PEREDA HAS FIRSTHAND EXPERIENCE AS A PATIENT. After a spine fracture left him in the care of physical therapists, Dr. Pereda embarked on a second career as a physical therapist, receiving his Bachelors in Physical Therapy from FIU, a post-graduate doctorate degree from the University of St. Augustine and a certificate in Manual Therapy, a designation that only five percent of therapists nationwide possess.

HE HAS SPECIAL TIES TO THE SPORTS WORLD. Dr. Pereda has been involved in multiple little leagues and other local sports, including Tae Kwon Do. He has attended three Olympic Games and the 2013 Pan-American Games as Medical Staff and will return to the Olympics in Brazil in 2016.

7

HE USED HIS SPORTS KNOWLEDGE ON A DAILY BASIS. FOHC’s extensive sports injury rehabilitation program is geared to athletes of all levels. With a program for tailored for post-surgical patients as well as athletes who are trying to avoid surgery, patient’s treatment plans include a throwing regime, plyometrics, calisthenics, resistance training, and other aspects that are specific to the athlete’s injury

FOHC WORKS WITH PATIENTS OF ALL AGES. Sport Specific Therapy is a specialization of the practice, including Pediatric Sports Injuries and the treatment of children ages 6-18. Children are often seen with sports injuries as well as orthopedic injuries including sprains. On the other end of the spectrum, FOHC offers a Senior Fitness Program geared to helping geriatric patients maintain functionality in their daily activities.

DR. PEREDA IS A PRACTITIONER AND TEACHER. As a professor at many local schools and universities including Nova, Florida International University, and Miami-Dade College, Dr. Pereda teaches to “treat from your heart, not from your mind.”

THE FACILITY IS ONE OF A KIND. FOHC houses a full gym with state-of-the-art equipment and more than 18 staff members.

ALL PROGRAMS ARE PERSONALIZED TO THE PATIENT. During a patient’s first visit, they are evaluated by a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). Special tests are performed to give an accurate confirmation of their diagnosis. The DPT will then go over the diagnosis, along with all signs and symptoms that they are experiencing. Patients are given a specific and individualized plan of care that is unique to each patient.

TREATMENT DOESN’T STOP WHEN THE PATIENT LEAVES. In addition to a treatment plan, which can often include coming in to the clinic two-to-three times per week, patients are educated on exercises, stretches, and preventative measures that can be done at home to help the recovery process. During visits, patients can expect to be treated for an average of 45-60 minutes. “As a manual therapist, every patient receives hands on care,” says Dr. Pereda

FOHC HOURS ARE FLEXIBLE. They cater to patient schedules, offering extra-long hours, FOHC is open from 6:00 am – 7:30 pm on weekdays and 6:30 am – 3:30 pm on Saturdays. They do not close for lunch.

THEY TAKE MOST INSURANCE PLANS. FOHC is one of a few clinics that accepts all major insurance plans, and most others as well. Although a prescription is required for treatment billed to insurance, FOHC does take self-pay patients as well.

FOHC has a well-established reputation for delivering outstanding physical therapy services and is dedicated to providing the best clinical care possible. It adheres to the highest ethical standards, and is committed to continuing professional development according to the latest research in our field. FOHC is located at 8585 Sunset Drive, Suite #103, Miami, Florida 33143. For more information, call 305.274.3311 or visit www.fohcpt.com.

WAS SITTING IN A CAFÉ IN PARIS WITH MY PURSE HANGING from the back of my chair. When I got up I noticed that someone had reached into the purse and stolen my cell phone and wallet.” “I was staying at a hotel in Aruba. I left my cell phone in the room and went to the pool. When I returned, I noticed my phone was missing the SIM card.” “My bag did not fit in the overhead compartment and I was forced to gate check it. When I retrieved my bag after the flight I noticed that both my iPad and medications were gone.” We hear these reports frequently from American travelers returning from international vacations. All too often we take abroad the same confidence we feel when vacationing domestically. The following tips will provide a quick checklist to avoid becoming victims of crime overseas. 1. Don’t take electronic devices or valuables that you don’t need, and never store the valuables or electronics you do take in checked luggage. 2. Before you travel, clean up your laptop, cellphone, and portable device of personal information by clearing your browser history and cache (including saved usernames and passwords), deleting favorite sites that could expose personal information or browsing habits, removing any personal data, pictures, and work that could be used against you, and remove any phone contact lists that could be stolen and made targets of fraud and phishing scams. 3. Before you travel, take time to backup all your electronic devices including cell phones and ensure that all your antivirus and security patches are up to date. 4. Don’t expect privacy abroad, as many countries do not have the same protections as the United States. Any cell phone conversation and email may be intercepted locally. 5. Assume that all free Wi-Fi is insecure, and avoid it if possible, as your web browsing activity is likely being viewed by a third party. 6. Report any stolen devices to the American Embassy or Consulate, as soon as possible. 7. Consider purchasing a cheap disposable phone before you leave and obtaining an inexpensive regional pre-paid SIM card at the airport of your destination. 8. As standard procedure, leave a copy of your passport, itinerary, and important phone numbers with a family member or friend, should they need to quickly access the information and get it to you. 9. Become familiar with local laws and customs to avert offending your host community by reviewing the US State Department and CIA World Factbook websites for any travel warnings and tips about your location. 10. Maintain a low profile about your status as a tourist. Avoid being the obvious American. With a little preparation, we should be able to avoid becoming the victim of crime during our international vacations. And during our stay, our behavior will help to keep us safe as long as it is discreet, respectful, and understated. BY GABRIEL LAMAS, OWNER, FITNESS TOGETHER

L

ET’S BE 100 PERCENT HONEST – WORKING OUT IS NOT always fun. In fact, even as a fitness enthusiast, I’d go so far as to say working out is usually not fun. Forgive the overused fitness industry cliché but “that’s why it’s called ‘working out’” – its work! Except for the few masochists out there, most of us don’t wake up at 5 am to get to the gym at 6 am to do a semi-exhausted workout three-to-four days per week before an eight hour work day because we want to…we do it because we need to. Just as we do it because we need to, not necessarily because we want to, we need to be accountable to see the best results from our hard work. What do I mean by accountable? Set up specific days and times of the day that you will be at the gym, no matter what. Its an appointment time that you cannot break. Working with a personal trainer is great, as it has a built in accountability mechanism of showing up for your appointment – but it’s the same concept whether you are working out with a trainer, with a friend or by yourself. Set the appointment time in your phone, on your agenda, on a sticky-note and you know you have to be at the gym at 6 am or 7 pm. It’s not an option or something you can just cancel on.

The same concept applies to nutrition. If you plan to wing it during the day chances are that nine times out of ten, you will end up eating the same calorie dense lunch and snacking on M&M’s from the vending machine by 3 pm. Our bodies are, unfortunately, pre-programmed to prefer sugary and fatty foods and usually grilled chicken breast and baby spinach is not the first choice of most. Just like setting up workout times, though, nutrition requires planning and accountability. Pack your lunch ahead of time. Bring some healthy, low calorie snacks. Do not give yourself the option to eat something else! We exercise because we have to – for our health, for our physical appearance, for our mental wellbeing. Accountability and planning are the two best tools one can have on his or her side to ensure the best possible results from the hard work put forth in the gym. Its not always fun, and it’s not always tasty – but the results are definitely worth it. Besides, you can always set a reminder for your weekly cheat meal, too! Passionate about the fitness business, Gabriel Lamas began owning franchised fitness studios at 23 years old. Originally from Massachusetts, Gabriel attended Florida International University and his fitness business holdings company, Gabriel Lamas Fitness LLC acquired the Fitness Together Miami brand his senior year of college. Conveniently located in South Miami and Coconut Grove, Fitness Together Miami has helped countless clients get in the best shape of their lives. AS K T HE E X PERT

A Rare Beauty BY JOHN O’ROURKE, OWNER, MONTICA JEWELRY

N

OT ALL DIAMONDS ARE EQUAL AND ONLY 20 PERCENT of those mined will ever qualify to be of gem quality. That means eight out of every ten diamonds discovered won’t make the cut and are used in industrial tools such as drill bits, saw blades and grinding wheels. The remaining two are of gem quality and their rarity can vary quite significantly. This can include a $299 tennis bracelet, $7,500 engagement ring or that $20,000 pair of diamond stud earrings you’ve been dreaming about. So let’s discuss the degree of rarity and how it applies to diamonds. The rarity and worth of a diamond is determined by four factors: cut, color, clarity and carat weight. Keep in mind that it is the specific combination of the four factors (of which there are thousands upon thousands of possibilities) that will determine the rarity of the diamond and hence its value in the current market place. All things being equal, the quality of a diamond’s cut will vary its value by as much as 60%. This means that you could essentially have two diamonds that have the same style of cut, color, clarity and carat weight, yet the one possessing an excellent cut is worth 60 percent more than the other. When you think of cut, think of performance. This is the diamond’s ability to return light and deliver that sparkle, fire and brilliance. It’s like choosing between two sports cars; one is a Mazda Miata and the other a Ferrari. Both are fun to drive and will get you from point A to point B. However, there’s clearly a difference in their look, feel, and overall performance... not to mention the price tag! Diamonds come in all colors of the rainbow. The rarest of all is the Fancy Red with less than 20 of them having been discovered worldwide. Most of us are seeking to possess diamonds that have little or no color at all. As a general rule, the “whiter” the diamond, the fewer impurities it has and the more valuable it is. These chemical impurities are what give a diamond its color with brown and yellow tints being the most common. Colorless diamonds when compared to near colorless are very difficult to distinguish from one another once placed in a setting. For that reason alone, there is a stronger demand for near colorless diamonds which mostly face-up white and would require less of an investment. Diamonds possessing visible tones of brown or yellow are more common and typically set in either yellow or rose gold. While those in the colorless to near colorless range are placed in white gold or platinum. Do you know what color your diamonds are? Clarity is the absence of any inclusions within the diamond or blemishes on the exterior. Flawless diamonds have neither and are incredibly rare. Inclusions are like thumbprints; most all diamonds have them and they’re used to identify the gem. In fact, inclusions are one of the factors that allow gemologists to easily determine fake diamonds, such as the cubic zirconia, from the real ones. The visual location, size and quantity of the inclusion(s) will determine its clarity grade. The fewer and less noticeable the inclusions, the rarer the diamond on the clarity grading scale. Most of us want a diamond that faces up “eye-clean,” in other words we don’t see any inclusions with our the naked eye. The more readily apparent the inclusions are, the more common and less valuable the diamond. Carat is not the size of the diamond but rather its metric weight. How that weight is distributed, is entirely dependent upon the quality of the cut and how the diamond will perform. So, not all one carat round cut diamonds are created equally. You can have short ones, tall ones, and perfect ones. It’s the difference between say Danny Devito, Howard Stern and Brad Pitt. All could weigh 185 pounds and yet most would agree that the distribution of that weight looks best on Mr. Pitt. A diamond is no different: the more precise the weight is distributed the more brilliant the diamond. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and that certainly rings true when selecting the perfect diamond. John O’Rourke, and wife Marichi, own Montica Jewelery in downtown Coral Gables. Anthony Acevedo of Visiting Angels of Miami BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

T

EN YEARS AGO ANTHONY ACEVEDO SAW the future. While he and his wife, Mirian Montano, held management positions with a large bookseller, he knew that the business climate at the time was unstable and that his position would eventually be downsized. With Montano’s family already in the home health field the two looked to what they knew and decided to take the leap to work for themselves. “We looked at different businesses in the ‘home care’ arena but found that Visiting Angels stood out as being the most altruistic company offering services to adults and the elderly,” says Acevedo. Today, Visiting Angels of Miami serves families across Miami-Dade, finding quality home care help for everything from Alzheimer’s and Dementia care and private duty care to assistance with running errands, shopping and hygiene. But finding the right caregiver isn’t always easy, nor is putting trust in a stranger to care for a family member. We sat down with Acevedo to explore the mechanics behind this sensitive industry, his recruiting methods and why he loves his work.

WHERE DO YOU RECRUIT YOUR HOME CARE WORKERS AND WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN TERMS OF PERSONALITY TRAITS? We ask that those who register with us be a Florida certified nurse assistants with at least a minimum of two years’ experience in the field. The state of Florida also requires that each individual have a digital FBI level background screening. Many of our best caregivers recruit their coworkers or friends in the field. The caregivers feel that our staff is working hard to give them great opportunities to work with good families. Above all we look for compassion and caregiving as

a vocation, not just a job. It may sound simplistic but having elderly parents, we look to see if this person could take care of them, if needed

WHAT ARE THE MAIN CONCERNS OF YOUR CLIENTS AND HOW DO YOU ADDRESS THEM? Most families want to know if the caregivers are experienced, background screened, reliable and can communicate well. We do a lot of work to recruit caregivers who meet those criteria, however, the clients all have an opportunity to meet and interview each candidate before services begin. We find that our “choose your caregiver” policy has worked well. Most of our caregivers stay with families for a year or more.

ARE YOU EMPLOYING ANY NEW TECHNOLOGIES OR SYSTEMS WITHIN THE INDUSTRY? We use the iPad and cloud-based software to ensure that the caregivers and the families are on the same page with schedules and care Visiting Angels owners Anthony Acevedo and Mirian Montano. plan issues. We also utilize an industry-based satisfaction mance as a service provider. We’re proud to say that our office has won “Leader in Excellence” and “Provider of management company called Home Care Pulse to survey Choice” awards the last three years. our clients and caregivers monthly on our overall perfor-

WHAT MAKES YOU MOST PROUD OF YOUR WORK? Families reach out to us to find a way to keep their loved ones at home. We provide that solution by sending experienced, qualified, caregivers that they can choose to assist them. Most times that support is enough to give their loved ones the safety and quality of life. It also gives the primary family caregiver some respite and peace of mind so they can take care of their own health. When families tell us that they both appreciate that an “angel” is there to help, we know we’ve done our job well.

WHAT DO YOU SEE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE BUSINESS? We know that a “senior tsunami” is coming, in terms of the baby boomers hitting 65 by the thousands on a monthly basis. We’re hopeful that the workforce can keep pace with the increasing demand. We remain confident that our Visiting Angels Miami office will be able to recruit and register the best and most caring individuals in the area. Visiting Angels of Miami is located at 9990 SW 77th Ave., Ste. 328. For more information, call 305-728-3153 or go to www.visitingangels.com/miami.

The Buyers are Here, From Everywhere! BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO

WHERE IS THE INVENTORY?

A

MERICANS, CENTRAL, SOUTH AND NORTH ARE BUYing. The Europeans have a real affinity for our area. The folks from Asia are making their presence felt, too. Does it really matter to the sellers where the buyer is from? Buyers are willing to pay fair market value…Welcome to Paradise! Buyers from Central America already knew about us and now more of them are ready, willing and able to buy their second home here. South Americans have really taken a liking to the area and we find them from many countries and at all price points. Northerners are sick and tired of the cold weather and they don’t have to take it anymore. Many Europeans are jumping the pond to reap the benefits of living in the city of eternal spring. Right now buyers are frustrated with the low number of homes for sale. Families that are moving during the summer, and want to be in their new home before the start of school, are having a difficult time finding a suitable home. This type of buyer wants a home that is move-in ready with little or no remodeling required. Their biggest expectation is generally that the home be in pristine condition. If it is not, then they expect the cost of repairs and remodeling be taken into consideration with the list price.

Most buyers are financing the purchase of the home. Lenders have loans for foreign nationals that allow them to buy with as low as 20 percent down payment. Locals can get even better terms and unbelievable rates! How much longer will this continue? We all know the market will slow down when the rates go up. If you’ve ever considered moving for any reason, this is the time to speak with your real estate agent. When you list your home for sale at fair market value, you can expect to have it sold within four months. So, where do you want to be living on Thanksgiving Day? Reports from the Multi Listing Service suggest that on average a home will take 86 days in the zip codes where The Florida Villager is delivered. This for homes priced between $750,000 and $1,500,000. Currently there are four months of inventory on the market, and a “normal market” is considered to be six months of inventory. This measures the number of homes that are on the market and compares it with the number of homes that have recently sold, or, are under contract. Do you want to know your home’s value? Ask your agent, or, go online. You may find a pleasant surprise. Your agents can give you the detailed numbers for your neighborhood that will help in understanding the value of your home. Fortunately, we receive buyer inquiries every week and we have been able to find most of the families their new home. Some are still looking. So, when do you plan on moving? Frank DeValdivielso, a member the Miami FL Team and The Keyes Company, is based out of 2423 Le Jeune Road, Coral Gables, FL 33134. For more information you can reach Frank at his office, 786 378 8450, or cell, 786 273 8507. You can also email him at RealEstate@MiamiFLTeam.com and please be sure to visit www.MiamiFLTeam.com for the latest listing and news regarding real estate.

The Basics of Going Up On Pointe BY ALISON HESH, FOUNDER & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, THE BALLET SPACE & SOUL PURPOSE STUDIO

F

OR AS LONG AS I HAVE BEEN TEACHING BALLET I HAVE always had students and parents ask me when they/their child will be ready for pointe shoes. There is no magic age at which children are put on pointe. It is a lot more complicated than that. For me, it is a complex formula of many things. Age, bone and muscle development, size and stature of parents, amount of time doing ballet technique and most crucially, the student’s commitment to their art form, are all things I take into consideration when putting a student up on pointe. Let’s take a moment and discuss some of these. Age, bone and muscle development, along with size and stature of parent, all fit together. The rough age I might even consider putting a student up on pointe is 11 or 12. A child around that age with three-to-five years of a strong ballet foundation, in my experience, usually has the required bone and muscle development needed to begin pointe. A child of 11 or 12 who has been doing ballet for that long has developed the strong feet and ankles needed to start pointe. Many studios rush into putting their students on pointe, but going on pointe too early can cause serious damage to a child’s feet and toes. If a student has not had a strong foundation of ballet technique then they will probably have weak ankles and going up on pointe could lead to ankle sprains, tendonitis and other painful foot and toe issues. If your ballet teacher has not approached you about putting your child up on pointe, please, please, please do not do it yourself. Choosing the correct pointe shoe is another crucial element in maintaining the health of your child’s feet. We will dive into that in a moment. When putting a student on pointe it is vital that they be committed to their art form. Not only should they have the proper ballet foundation for a smooth transition to pointe work, but once those pointe shoes have finally been attained, it is also important that they continue, diligently, to maintain the strength needed to be on pointe. At my studio, students must dance at least four hours of ballet a week to continue on pointe. Jazz, lyrical, modern, tap and hip hop are great forms of dance but they do not provide the proper amount of foot strength to maintain the level of strength needed to improve in pointe work. Pointe is hard. Pointe is painful. But the reason why we all do it, and why everyone wants to go up on pointe, is because it is beautiful! Those shiny pink satin pointe shoes and those beautiful laces and the way a dancer just glides across the floor are the images in all of my students’ heads before they go up on pointe. It takes years to master some of the simplest steps on pointe; therefore, it is extremely important to continue regular technique classes along with pointe classes. Getting fitted correctly for pointe shoes is a critical first step in going up on pointe. For as long as I have been teaching (roughly 25 years), I have gone to the store with every single student for their first pointe shoe fitting. I know my students’ feet better than anyone else on the planet! Even more than their own parents! I know how strong their feet are, how high their arch is, how their right foot is stronger than their left, how the second toe is longer than the first, and much more. I also know all of the pointe shoe options on the market and how they will or won’t work for each of my students’ feet. There is a huge selection of pointe shoes and sometimes finding the right one is difficult. It is important to not get frustrated. There is a shoe out there for everyone! If a shoe is too tight it might cause tendonitis or painful blisters on their heels. If a shoe is too loose the foot can move around too much, causing ankle strains and blisters on their toes because of the friction. Pointe is already painful enough just getting up to the tips of the toes, so having a proper fitting shoe will lessen the pain and help support the arch, toes and ankles for a healthy dancer. Opening its doors in 2008, Soul Purpose Studio has become the place to train in advanced ballet thanks in part to Alison’s very well-respected name in the community. The studio offers ballet class from ages 3-18 as well as Pilates and Yoga. Alison primarily teaches the Pre-Professional program which is ages 10-18 as well as all of the Pilates classes and absolutely loves what she does every single day! T’S IS FRIDAY NIGHT. YOUR SON WANTS TO JOIN THE BAND AND YOU WERE supposed to stop at the local music store all week and check out prices. The deadline is Monday. You just ran out of time this week. What do you do? Some people would go to the internet and search for the musical instrument. Some people may even purchase the instrument online, pay the outrageous shipping costs, and hope it arrives on time for the Monday afternoon band try-out. That is one option. The other option is calling your local music store and getting advice from a musical expert. You will get to discuss the options with a “live”, customer service-focused person!

Why Shop Locally? »» Boost the Local Economy: Shopping locally will boost the local economy and keep the community financially stable. »» Easier and Close to Home: The music store of your choice may be right around the corner. Give them a call, set up an appointment or just stop in and talk about your options and opportunities. »» Find Unique, One-of-aKind Items: Local stores often stock items that are made locally, and aren’t available elsewhere. »» S u p p o r t Local Entrepreneurs: Gives you an opportunity to thank local business men and women for keeping their business open and boosting the local economy. Most of these business men and women are your family, friends, and neighbors. »» Help Build Your Local Community: Buy locally. If the businesses are not supported, the local groups tend to disappear, making it difficult to recruit families to your community. Real estate sales suffer and you no longer have a thriving community. »» Receive some GREAT Advice and Customer Service: Local businesses may be in a position to offer discounts that you may not otherwise receive. They may have special offers that you can only take advantage of if you shop at their store. And the customer service is spot on … they normally treat you like family! »» Try Before you Buy: What an advantage this is … have you ever purchased an item online, only to find out you really don’t like it? At a local business it’s easier to sample the product. Although shopping online may be a convenience, is it the best option when you are looking for musical equipment, music lessons or just want to get advice from professionals? Probably not. See the value of shopping locally for yourself … you won’t be disappointed. Let the summer begin! Enjoy the sounds of music and have FUN! Musicians Discount Center in Miami help you find the guitar that suits you and fits your budget, too. They are the one stop music shop that has been sharing their expertise with others for many years. They offer new and used instruments, instrument rentals, rent to own programs and music lessons. Stop in and let the sounds of music begin in your house today. Contact Musicians Discount Center at 305-255-9466 or visit them online at www.musiciansdiscountcenter.net.

The Holistic Mommy Makeover A GREAT CONFIDENCE BOOSTER AFTER DIVORCE

BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D., M.S, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, SOUTH MIAMI, FL

A

S I PILOT MY GLIDER OVER THE EVERGLADES THE sense of freedom, peace, and tranquility is indescribable. I associate those feelings with wellness. The opposite feeling of wellness has to be what one experiences before, during and after a nasty divorce (especially when kids are involved). The unpleasantness of constantly having to deal with someone that is looking to make your life harder can create daily gloom. The inability to fully remove yourself from a toxic situation creates high levels of stress. This is as common for men as it is for women. Regardless, out of the need for love and companionship, divorcees begin the task of taking better care of themselves with the hope of finding a new relationship. I can truly tell you that this is one area where a holistic approach to wellness really helps.

When Results Matter Most!

IC

Miami-Dade county has the second highest divorce rate in the country. There are more than 500,000 divorcees out there. Women lead the men in that statistic. Being a single mom makes dating a logistical disaster. Furthermore, many women have suffered significant physical change from having children. This compounds the problem. So when date night arrives, out-come the Spanx, the girdles, and the latest Victoria’s Secret antigravity device. Stuffing the stigmata of bringing new life to the world in to a spandex mold. The superficiality of Miami creates an even higher hurdle. The boobs have to be just so, and don’t get me started on the butts. I’m starting to think that Kim K. would feel bottom deficient in this town. The “mommy makeover” is the general term for surgically improving the damage caused by having children. The deflated sagging breasts are improved by a breast augmentation, or breast lift. The abdomen can be helped by a bikini tummy tuck, with or without some curve defining liposculpture. Since I have a holistic approach to wellness, I like to incorporate my nutritional program into the mix. Older patients can benefit from bioidentical hormone replacement. Granted, safety is a huge concern for anyone having surgery. This is where you have to do your homework. Make sure you choose your plastic surgeon wisely. They should be board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. The surgical facility should be accredited by a reputable credentialing body such as AAAASF. From a psychological perspective I understand that true beauty comes from within. I am also realistic about the power of a positive self-image. I believe the feeling of once again belonging to the attractive group can truly help in this recovery period. So as you single moms do homework, science projects, take the kids to the orthodontist, or afterschool and weekend sports, take a minute to analyze your own wellness level. Ultimately you will be a much better parent if you feel great about yourself.

HETHER YOU LIVE IN MIAMI OR ARE JUST HERE visiting, taking your dog for a swim in the pool, at the beach and at sandbars is a must. Not only will your dog love you for it, but it will also get some great exercise. Even little dogs can benefit from playing in the water, though it’s important to keep in mind that some dogs do not like the water or are just not used to it. For those dogs, the introduction to “water sports” must occur gradually and under the supervision of their human companions. It’s also important to remember that certain breeds of dogs are not adapted to be swimmers, especially flat nose breeds (brachycephalics) such as Bulldogs and Pugs though they may still enjoy floating around, relaxing in their owners arms. However, playing in the water does not come without some dangers. Just as we would with a toddler, we must be extremely vigilant with our canine buddies, particularly puppies and senior dogs. It is a myth that all dogs know how to swim instinctively. Many dogs will “doggy paddle” without moving their back legs. The extra effort of this inefficient movement will lead to the dog becoming fatigued more rapidly while in the water, potentially with disastrous results. Here are a few tips for enjoying your summer at the beach with your best buddy: »» Teach puppies early in life how to swim and how to get out of the water in the event that they accidentally fall in it . A non-slip pool ramp or a floating ladder might be a good investment that may one day save your dog’s life. »» Constant supervision while your dog is in the water is a must. A dog that is having trouble staying afloat will not cry for help. »» Purchase a good quality life jacket if you plan on taking your dog on a boat. Even the best canine swimmer can fall from a moving boat unnoticed. »» Provide shade and cool water. A dog that is playing in the water can develop dehydration and sunburns. Most zinc-free baby sunscreens are safe for dogs. »» If your dog is older, assist them in getting in and out of the the water. An arthritic dog could easily hurt themselves while navigating pool steps or walking on the soft, uneven sand of the beach. »» Learn basic Pet CPR. It’s better to be over prepared than under prepared. Look for the article on CPR techniques for pets coming up in next month’s issue of The Florida Villager. South Florida is a paradise that is meant to be shared with our four-legged family members. What better way to enjoy it than to splash in the water together? Don’t let your poolside vacation end in a visit to an emergency vet clinic. Follow these basic water safety tips and your best buddy forever be thankful.

Summer Safety Inspection BY ERIC RAISTRICK, OWNER OF ERIC’S OUTBOARD

N

OW THAT THE SUMMER BOATING SEASON has begun, it is important that you review your safety gear to make sure that everything is current. This is not a sexy topic, but due diligence now will increase your on-board safety as well as help ensure that your vessel passes a potential Coast Guard Auxiliary. Most of us focus on the mechanical and general maintenance items, but few of us remember how many safety items carry expiration dates. Here is a brief list of equipment with expiration dates: »» Fire extinguishers »» Signal kit – flares »» EPIRB battery »» Flash light batteries »» Hand held VHF battery »» Auto-inflating life vest gas cartridges »» Auto-inflating life raft gas cartridges »» Emergency fresh water »» First aid kit medicines (if stored in military ammunition box, check for dryness. Use zip lock bags) »» Ditch kit – food expiration If you have purchased new life vests, be sure that you remove the plastic packaging in order to comply with Coast Guard safety regulations. Also, there should be one fire extinguisher per number of engines, and they should be mounted in an accessible spot. Safe boating!

What are the Benefits of Bone Broth? BY TAMI MAIER

LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE

It provides Adequate Moisture Intake With Their Food. Regardless of whether you are feeding dry food, homemade and fresh food or raw food, increased moisture is of great benefit to your companion animal’s overall health. Dry food (kibble, cookies, etc.) is formulated in direct contradiction to a dog’s and cat’s natural diet. A species appropriate diet for a dog and cat is high in moisture content. Prevention, Treatment of Arthritis, Cancer Bone broth made from organic grass-fed animal bones is a good source of MSM (a form of naturally occurring sulfur) that is present in all vertebrates. Dogs with cancer (humans as well) are often found to be deficient in sulfur. Sulfur performs multiple actions that make it difficult for cancer and inflammation to spread. MSM also protects against oxidative stress by supporting the body’s ability to produce glutathione. Glutathione is one of the most important antioxidants produced naturally by the body and it can not be produced without sulfur. MSM is also used to help alleviate symptoms of arthritis. Strengthens collagen an amino acid that gives strength to many structures in the body (i.e. bone, connective tissue, skeletal muscles, etc.). Healthy collagen helps to hamper the spread of cancer and helps to repair the damage from chemotherapy. It helps to rebalance the body’s pH level from acidic to alkaline. Most dogs, cats and people that are suffering from cancer have an acidified body pH level. Restorative Digestive Health If your dog or cat has just experienced a bout of diarrhea and you have fasted him/her for a day and you want to start re-introducing food to his/her diet you can start by offering your dog or cat a bowl of bone broth. Bone broth, when made properly, is rich in nutrients and easy on the digestive system. If your dog or cat has leaky guy syndrome bone broth can help with cell repair. Bone broth contains substances that are important for intestinal cell health these substances are collagen, gelatin, glycine and proline. Recovery From Injury or a Poor Appetite If your dog or cat has just had surgery or an oral injury, is older and has a suppressed appetite bone broth can be added to the daily diet to help deliver added nutrients.\ Renal Health (kidneys and ureters, bladder and urethra) Dry food is very hard on a dog’s and cat’s elimination system, particularly the kidneys, liver and bladder. The kidney, bladder and liver rely on the presence of moisture to flush unwanted substances out of the body such as excess minerals, toxins etc... When moisture is in short supply the organs cannot function efficiently. This can contribute to toxic loading, formation of fatty lipomas, create a breeding ground for urinary tract infections and enable the formation of crystals and stones in the bladder and kidney.

Specializing in dog walking, pet sitting, pet boarding and now offering a full line of all natural pet products. Our goal at Lux Paws is to provide care for the whole dog thru love, companionship, nutrition and exercise.

Dental Health Although dry food is promoted as being great for dental health, dry food can actually promote dental problems such as gingivitis and periodontal disease. In the absence of moisture, particles of food remain on the dog’s or cat’s teeth. With insufficient moisture to flush the particles away bacteria forms, then plaque. And most commercial dental bones contain species inappropriate ingredients, toxins and carcinogens. By hydrating your pet’s food you support dental, digestive and eliminatory health. Of course always check with your veterinarian before making any changes to your dog or cat’s daily diet. Tami Maier, MS in Counseling Psychology, with current focus and certification on Aromatherapy for pets. A native of Miami, Florida, she is the owner and operator of Lux Paws Pet Sitting, a dog boarding, doggy daycare, dog walking and pet sitting business for 8 years. Tami strives to provide care for the whole dog through love, companionship, nutrition and exercise. You can reach Tami at 786.306.9192 or tami@lux-paws.com.

The FAQ’s of Consignment

F

OR MOST PEOPLE, BUYING AND SELLING in a consignment store can be a complete mystery. At it’s simplest, consignment is the process of putting items for sale at a retail store and splitting the profits after they’ve sold. But what people don’t always realize is that consignment stores are a great opportunity to not only earn money for gently used furniture, it is a great place to find unusual and special items that may never be available anywhere else. To clear up some of the confusion about what, when and how we buy and sell our pieces here are a few of my most frequently asked questions:

HOW MUCH DOES THE STORE REFLECT YOUR PERSONAL TASTE?

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN YOU CONSIGN A NEW PIECE TO YOUR STORE?

WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE MOST UNUSUAL AND UNIQUE PIECES YOU HAVE SEEN?

My customers have a wide variety of tastes and styles, so I try to vary the inventory and have a good mix to satisfy everyone.

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF PURCHASING FURNITURE FROM YOUR STORE, RATHER THAN PURCHASING NEW FURNITURE? Newer furniture tends to be constructed of more fabricated materials. We prefer to sell solid wood, marble, granite and beveled, not flat, glass and mirror.

I look for pieces that are unusual and are known highend brands. They must also be in excellent condition.

HOW DO YOU DECIDE ON THE PRICE? I research the pieces thoroughly to see what the market will bear when setting the price on each specific piece.

HOW MUCH OF YOUR BUSINESS IS ANTIQUES? Right now antiques are not a hot commodity, but we still have a selection for our antique loving clientele.

Upscale Furniture Consignment Gallery

WHAT IS THE FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENT BETWEEN THE CONSIGNER AND THE STORE? At Upscale Furniture Consignment Gallery it is a 50/50 split when sold.

HOW OFTEN DO NEW ITEMS ARRIVE? We get new arrivals three-to-four times per week.

A pair of glass chairs, a Cappellini table and a BLOOM lounge chair. The consignment business is only growing; more and more people are finding inspiration in past styles and seeing the benefit of great quality at a great value. For more information on consigning visit us at upscalefurnitureconsignmentgallery.com. You can visit the store at 8845 SW 132nd Street in the Warehouses by The Falls.

‘You’ Time at the Inn on 5th in Naples BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

M

OMS AND DADS, the school year is over and camp plans are in place so there is no better time than the present to take some “you” time. After a busy year devoted to kids, school and family why not take a weekend to relax and rejuvenate? If South Beach is not your scene then head over to Naples and check yourself into the Inn on 5th. That’s what I did. Walking into their recently redesigned lobby I had the feeling of tranquility. The wrought iron sweeping staircase, the shabby chic chandeliers, polished marble floors and the flowing white drapes lining the second floor reminded me of being in a European villa. I was escorted to my room, a deluxe king overlooking 5th Ave. Stepping out onto my full size balcony, complete with wicker furniture, I could take in all of 5th Ave with all of its charm. I dropped my suitcase, changed into my bathing suit and headed to the front desk where they took me by golf cart to the beach. They also offer car service if that is your preferred mode of transportation. Now, here is where you as a couple have some options. Instead of the beach, dad could go play golf at one of the two courses the inn offers and the mom could head out shopping at all those fabulous boutiques on 5th. When each has had their own alone time, meet back at the spa for a couples massage before dinner. Get that Zen feel at the spa with all the finest in natural products and unique treatments. Totally unwind and let your mind wander as you enter the bamboo beaded curtained room for your couples massage. The Feng Shui elements are sure to leave you completely relaxed, at which point make your way over to the pool. With the soothing feel and sound of the waterfall in the pool, it will be easy to make it your own sanctuary and take a much-deserved nap. I did. The curtain of nighttime was being drawn and white lights in the trees on 5th avenue magically appeared. I pulled up one of my wicker chairs on the balcony and took it all in. Note to self; bring a bottle of champagne next time. My dinner reservation at Avenue5 was at 9:00, so I had a few minutes to sit at the island bar and get a feel for what the bartender recommended on the menu. With drink in hand, I was seated at the best table in the house (in my humble opinion). It was a table right by the sliding glass doors, which were completely opened to the sidewalk with a red velvet rope separating me from the passersby. I felt like I was in my own little world. The restaurant has an old Hollywood feel and serves spectacular classic American cuisine. I couldn’t decide between the crab cake and the calamari, so I got both. Fabulous. My main course was Block Island swordfish with orzo and little neck clams. Equally as fabulous. Last but not least was the sampling of the cobbler. Decadent. I fell into a deep sleep snuggled up in a fluffy comforter with the lights twinkling through the trees off of my balcony. After a sumptuous brunch, I lounged by the pool with my book for the better part of the day. Sunday night I took up residence at the bar at Seasons 52 to hear local musician Gary Pickus play the piano and take requests. He was very engaging and entertaining and I was bummed when his time at the mic came to an end. I asked him to join me at the bar so I could find out what it is that he likes about the Naples crowd. “I like the fact that Naples audiences have a special appreciation for performers that play music that gives them ‘time machine moments’ to rekindle memories of days gone by.” “Time machine moments”-- I like that phrase and I would venture to say staying at the Inn on 5th will be one of those for me. FYI, between July and October the inn is offering special rates and if you mention The Florida Villager when booking a 2 night stay, you will receive a $50 resort credit.

Being excited with new prospects and your newfound freedom can cloud decisions and come across the wrong way, especially to men that are not in the same place as you.I understand what it’s like to juggle children and a man in your life, but being aware of the pitfalls is one-third of the battle, having an understanding suitor is another third, and you compromising is the final third. Here are a few pitfalls that could shut down a potentially good relationship real quick. Pitfall #1 - As moms, we are really concerned with what our children will think of us dating and rightfully so, but everything in perspective, please. Remember you are the parent and you do not need to get your children’s approval; that is way too much power for a child! Pitfall #2 – Please don’t compare – good, bad or indifferent. Don’t compare everyone you date to your ex and don’t compare one date to another; let these guys stand on their own merit. Pitfall #3 – Ladies, no talking about your ex. Of course, questions are going to be asked, but you don’t have to go into a story the length of “War and Peace.” Let your ex stay in

your past where he belongs. And for heaven’s sake, get out of Mommy Mode. Yes, we all have children, but let’s not make the entire night about our kids. Your date will walk away at the end of the night knowing more about them than you. Pitfall #4 – We all have one: a difficult ex to deal with. If your ex has given you a hard time all day, don’t let him ruin your date night. Don’t rehash every text and every jab that your ex has laid on you. Choose to enjoy yourself and let your date enjoy you. Pitfall #5 – Wanting too much too soon. Whether you’re trying to get back to what was familiar or your desire to have a man around to fix the house, be a dad to your kids, or meet your sexual needs, pushing for exclusivity too soon won’t work. Let it unfold naturally. If you don’t, the only pushing you will be doing is pushing him away. Pitfall #6 – As single moms, we are busy, busy, busy, but how can you have a relationship if you don’t leave space for one? If you think you can’t fit dating into your schedule, it just might have more to do with fear than time. Pitfall #7 – I hear quite a number of my clients say, “He just doesn’t understand my position.” My question back is, “Are you understanding his?” You see, right away we think that the guy should understand the “plight” of the single mom, but I am quick to help my clients see the “plight” of the guy dating a single mom. He is not in your shoes nor does he share your current responsibilities and past experiences. He might have

no children, which means he will be looking at this from a completely different angle. Pitfall #8 – Dating too soon or waiting too long. If you have unhealed wounds, dating or being sexually intimate might not be the best course of action. The flip side of this is waiting too long and now you have become more set in your ways, perhaps less flexible, and not as open. The key here is to blend. It isn’t about him plopping into your world or you into his; it’s about blending them together. If you choose to see this as a daunting task, it will be, and if you choose to see this as a fun experience, it will be. The choice is yours.

SEEN O N S CENE PALMER TRINITY AWARD Palmer Trinity School was recognized with the Best Independent School Award at the 2014-2015 Green Schools Challenge and WE-LAB Awards Ceremony. This is the third consecutive year that Palmer Trinity School earns the Top Independent School Award, given to the top scoring independent or private school for designing and implementing energy and environmental solutions at their schools. The Eco-summit Award was presented to Palmer Trinity School for its exceptional Science and Sustainability Fair. INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL In 2007, Tiffany Ellington, a fifth-grader at Howard Drive Elementary, was chosen by the Dade County Sports Foundation as a recipient for one of its annual Tennis & Swim Camp scholarships. That same year, she was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and deadly form of cancer. After 6 months of chemotherapy, Tiffany beat her condition. Her family was cautioned by doctors that the condition may return years later, but today, she’s cancer-free. Fast forward to 2015: Tiffany just graduated Palmetto Senior High School and plans to major in Business at Florida Atlantic University. On Wednesday, June 3, Tiffany returned to Howard Drive and received a $25,000 check from the Dade County Sports Foundation. It was an emotional morning for Tiffany and her family as she walked onstage to accept her award. Congratulations, Tiffany! We’re all incredibly proud of you. CASTAWAYS AGAINST CANCER The Castaways Against Cancer, a Relay for Life team ranked 1st in Florida, launched on their 16th Annual kayaking journey, dubbed the “East of Midnight Tour,” at 7:00 a.m. from Virginia Key in Miami, FL on Saturday, June 6. Paddling the equivalent of a marathon a day, the Castaways will paddle a total of 160 miles as a fundraiser supporting the American Cancer Society (ASC) and made landfall at Higgs Beach in Key West on Friday, June 12. For a fourth year, Luis de la Aguilera, President and Chief Executive Officer at TotalBank, along with TEAM TotalBank, have pledged their helping hands to the Castaways in hopes of surpassing this year’s fundraising goal of $125,000.

4TH ANNUAL BK SCHOLARS AWARDS The 4th Annual Miami-Dade BK Scholars Awards Ceremony for the Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholars Program was held June 4 at Burger King’s worldwide headquarters. 100 of Miami-Dade’s best and brightest high school graduates, who are college-bound with help from the Burger King Scholars program, were recognized at the ceremony. As the philanthropic arm of the Burger King system, the Foundation provides scholarships every year to deserving high school graduates. This year alone, the Burger King Scholars program has awarded $2.7 million in scholarships to almost 2,500 students to help make their dreams of a college education a reality.

UNITED WAY YOUNG LEADERS THIRD ANNUAL MURAL PAINTING More than 80 young professionals, who already donate $1,000 or more annually to benefit the community, rolled up their sleeves and gave of their time at United Way of Miami-Dade Young Leaders’ annual handson volunteer project, on Saturday, June 6, at Citrus Grove Elementary School. The volunteer project was sponsored by FedEx and Royal Caribbean. Volunteers arrived early Saturday morning to paint a mural designed by Miami-based artist Michael Halley. Showcasing Miami’s colorful shoreline and skyline, the mural was painted along the entrance of the school, an approximately 200-foot-long wall that faces NW 22 Ave. Together, Halley and United Way Young Leaders are leaving their mark around town, as this is the third school mural they completed. Each mural has a similar style representative of the bright and vibrant Miami community, and has a lasting, positive impact on the students and staff of the schools.
