CTOBER IS HERE, AND SO BEGINS ONE of our favorite times of the year! Before you know it, Halloween will be upon us, and everywhere you look you’ll see candy, costumes, and pumpkins. Whether you’re out partying, trickor-treating, or staying in to give out candy, we wish everyone a happy and safe Halloween. There are many fun events taking place this month, so be sure to check out our Events Calendar (page 6) and enjoy what our wonderful city has to offer. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness month, and we encourage everyone to think pink! Staying with this theme, we invite you to read about Beth Armstrong, this month’s featured Philanthropist (page 18). A breast cancer survivor herself, she is fiercely dedicated to raising money for the organization Race for the Cure. And don’t miss the special feature ‘Falling for the Season’ (page 16) to celebrate the fun of Fall with everything from holiday tips to culinary comforts. Also, if you’ve ever wondered about the rapidly expanding field of veterinary physical therapy for pets, be sure to check out Dr. Marta Sanchez Emden’s ‘Pet Health’ column (page 29), as she clears up some misconceptions regarding this subject. Don’t forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), Instagram (@thefloridavillager), and Google + (The Florida Villager). Around the County STEVEN SOTLOFF MEMORIAL GARDEN OPENS Pinecrest Gardens commemorated the opening of the Steven Sotloff Memorial Garden on September 12 with an open-to-the-public ceremony honoring the slain journalist and Pinecrest native. The garden is centered on three water features, a long-time tenet of garden design, often referring to heaven, Earth and man, with the water features built to show harmonious yet quiet water movement, using travertine stone as the base stonework according to Village spokesperson Michelle Hammontree. Home Depot acted as a principal partner in the memorial, with Sotloff’s parents helping to choose the elements, plants and colors that would allow for meaningful reflection.

BRIGHAM AND WOMEN’S AND MIAMI CHILDREN’S HEALTH JOIN FORCES Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Miami Children’s Health Systems (MCHS) have joined together to explore the creation of a comprehensive high-risk fetal and newborn medicine program to care for healthy mothers who are expecting a baby with complex medical issues. The two medical powerhouses will work together to develop the program, which will include a high-risk fetal labor and delivery unit at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital (slated to open in 2017). “Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a leading provider of fetal and newborn care, including the diagnosis and treatment of newborn babies with complex medical issues,” said Dr. M. Narendra Kini, CEO at MCHS. “We are eager to bring their expertise to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital with the goal of developing a comprehensive and patient-focused facility for women with high-risk-fetal pregnancies and their babies.” In addition to a site assessment, BWH experts will advise on equipment and technology decisions as well as offer recommendations about standardizing care models and clinical protocols and arrange for opportunities to participate in joint fetal conferences via telemedicine.

New Exhibit Explores Story of Tamiami Trail BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
T
HE CORAL GABLES MUSEUM LAUNCHES “Trailblazers: The Perilous Story of the Tamiami Trail” this month, using images, artifacts, historic documents and film to explore the construction, history and culture of the Tamiami Trail, as well as its devastating impact on the Everglades. The interactive exhibit, curated by environmentalist Jon Ulman is sponsored by The Everglades Foundation, Ford Motor Company, Kiewit, Miami-Dade County Division of Cultural Affairs and the City of Coral Gables. ““The story of Tamiami Trail is one of ambition, greed, and its environmental consequences,” said Ullman. “There is so much we can learn from it today.” Begun in 1915 and completed in 1928, the 275-mile, two-lane road was built to connect Miami and Tampa (hence the name “Tamiami”) and cost $8 million. In 1922, when the state ran out of money to complete the east-west portion of the Trail, the project was rescued by advertising mogul Barron Collier, who saw potential in opening Florida’s Southwest to development. In exchange for the bailout, Collier was given a county in his name. Unfortunately, the roadway disrupted the natural flow of the Everglades, causing roads to flood (now controlled by water managers) and restricting the flow of water to the southern areas, an environmental issue the curator has worked on for more than 17 years. In fact, Ullman organized a broad-based coalition to build the River of Grass Parkway, a 6.5-mile collection of bridges across Tamiami Trail to restore water flow to

Everglades National Park and Florida Bay. His advocacy on the campaign to raise US-41 resulted in the first raised mile and an additional planned 5.5-mile of bridging. Additionally, Ullman spent most of the 1990s working with activists to successfully stop a major commercial airport in Homestead between Everglades and Biscayne National Parks. The Museum has scheduled a full slate of events to kick off the Trailblazers’ seven month exhibit. Ullman will host an educator’s’ reception on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 6:30 p.m. that includes a guided tour, ideal for science and environmental science teachers of all grade levels. Admission is $10 and includes a complimentary beverage. A Family Day is planned for Saturday, Oct. 10, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A Curator’s Tour with Ullman is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 11, at 1:00 p.m. Several author events and panel discussions are also planned throughout the exhibit’s run at the Museum. Located at 285 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables Museum’s mission is to celebrate, investigate and explore the civic arts of architecture and urban and environmental design, including fostering an appreciation for the history, vision, and cultural landscape of Coral Gables; promoting beauty and planning as well as historic and environmental preservation for a broad audience, including children, families, and community members, as well as local, regional, national and international visitors.

S PART OF PROJECT LEAD THE WAY’S STEM DISCIPLINE, RIVIERA Schools’ Principles of Biomedical Science class has become a popular course for fall of 2015. In order to broaden the scope of the school’s’ course offerings, Riviera Schools brought Project Lead the Way’s STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and math) on board while working on the evolution of the school’s course development. For the new class, are working through many details of what appears to be a murder, but in fact, the death was caused by diabetic ketoacidosis. This unconventional method of introducing students to the scientific method is not only practical, but it is interactive and captivating, facilitating a transcendent learning experience. This year, the school also added the Project Lead the Way Program to the middle school curriculum. As a result, the Principles of Biomedical course has become the top science offering. The middle school Gateway program allows students to engage in creative problem solving, relevant to real-world challenges.
Under the direction of Ms. Janet Mantecon, the Biomedical Principles course offers students the opportunity to explore sophisticated concepts of both biology and medicine. After this introductory course, students move to a sequence of three Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science courses, focusing on human body systems, medical interventions, and biomedical innovation. The students’ experiences are enhanced by a close collaboration and mentorship with Baptist Health Systems and the University of Miami’s School of Medicine. The advanced Riviera Biomedical students can even participate in actual rounds at Baptist Hospital, visit local veterinarian offices, and participate in lab work and seminars at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. With these and many more opportunities provided through the Biomedical program, students are able to start their pathway to a career in the medical field while still in high school. “Our students are pushed to think past their initial instincts and analyze the details of the crime scene,” adds Associate Director Peter Cohen. “They’re taught to look beyond the obvious.” Before unveiling the school’s new, almost 11-acre, state-of-the-art campus in 2011, Riviera Schools worked diligently on curriculum development. Riviera Schools did so not only to meet but to exceed their goals in offering courses that would challenge and prepare their students for postsecondary studies and to help them successfully compete in today’s ever-growing global economy.

Fighting Like a Girl BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
NAME:
Beth Armstrong ORGANIZATION:
Race for the Cure raceforthecure.org BACKGROUND: For Armstrong, raising money for breast cancer research isn’t just a cause; it’s a personal mission. The 40-year-old mother of three boys was, herself, diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma at 36. “I worked full-time, was a wife, and mother,” says Armstrong. “I did not have time for cancer, cancer was not in my game plan.” Motivated by her husband, friends and, most importantly, her sons, Armstrong decided she had two options. “I learned I had two choices – I could fall down crying every day or I could get up, put my gloves on and ‘fight like a girl,’” In 2011 she underwent a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction and never looked back. “I decided then in my ‘pink journey’ that my story would be an open book,” she says. ABOUT HER WORK: For the last four years, Armstrong has been Team Captain for FPL’s Turkey Point Power Plant (where she works as a Nuclear Plant Records Technician) at the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Race for The Cure. With her guidance, she and her colleagues have raised nearly $20,000 for the organization. Additionally, Armstrong plans and hosts an annual week-long Pink Passion Week at Turkey Point that includes fundraisers such as bake sales, safety fairs, ice cream socials, parking spot raffles and fishing tournaments. UPCOMING PLANS: Seeing herself as “fortunate” to have had a friend who had been through treatment before her, Armstrong has dedicated herself to being that friend to others dealing with the disease. “I feel that if I can reach one person who would not have otherwise had a mammogram, if I can give one cancer patient hope, if my story reaches one person that can identify and know that they too can fight and win that Survivor title, then sharing my story has been worth it.” For more information on Race for the Cure and upcoming events visit raceforthecure.org.

’M VERY PROUD TO INFORM YOU THAT THE CITY OF CORAL Gables has recently expanded a program that helps provide assistance to victims of crime. I thought this was an important enhancement that was necessary to deter crime in our neighborhoods. The currently existing Victim Assistance Program, which provides assistance to victims of violent crime, has been expanded for a 180-day trial period to also include victims of home and car burglaries. This very successful program, administered by our own Police Department, recognizes the importance of providing assistance to victims of crimes, including assisting victims in interacting with the criminal justice system to make the experience easier on victims and to help ensure justice prevails. With this program, we are looking to increase victim participation to aid in the conviction rates for all individuals committing crimes, specifically burglaries in the City, thereby deterring future crime. As part of the new program expansion, victims of home and car burglaries may receive transportation assistance, if requested, to attend court hearings and meetings, reimbursement of per diem expenses, mileage and parking incurred by the victim when attending court hearings and/or meetings at the State Attorney’s Office. I encourage you to become aware of this new program enhancement. For more information contact the Coral Gables Police Department at 305-460-5471.

Real Estate Related Quality of Life, Where to Live? BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO
S
O MUCH TO DO! THE COOLER HALF OF THE YEAR IS here and with it the traffic is back in full force, people everywhere are hustling to their activities in this beautiful weather. The next six months will bring opportunity to enjoy the arts, the sports, the workouts and so much more. South Florida is in full gear! Shakespeare is coming to Miami in the form of an exhibition of his first folio at FIU along with a series of events around the exhibit including educational programs for the community. The Adrienne Arsht Center will host world-class shows, including Cabaret, The Sound of Music, Motown The Musical and many more. There are some 25 museums in town and many more art galleries. Coral Gables and The Wynwood District each host “Art Walks” every month. The arts are crescendoing and for that we are grateful. It’s easy to understand why any team that wants that discretionary dollar from the local fans has to put on a good product. Miami has the Dolphins, Your Miami Heat is on, and The Panthers open the NHL season this month. The Strikers in Ft. Lauderdale, and soon the Miami FC, will kick off at FIU Stadium in anticipation of an MLS franchise coming to town. Miami will rise to the calling of being a soccer powerhouse. NCAA Football and Soccer games are played every weekend this month in South Florida. You have High School football games on Friday nights to start the weekend off, and in friendly outdoor conditions. Then there are the opportunities to work out. The marathons, 5K runs, fund raising walks and Golf Outings are just a few examples. Tennis anyone? Long walks to breathe deep, and take in the paradise that we live in. Let’s go fishing, catch lobster and harvest stone crabs! Our universities are world-renowned. FIU ranked #6 in the U.S. News Education report for their International Business program. UM has its sixth president in Julio Frenk (wilkommen, bienvenue, welcome) a visionary in global citizenship, and has started construction of a 200,000-square-foot ambulatory care center on campus. Back to school anyone? Tempting, isn’t it? Livability.com named Coral Gables the “Foodie City” of 2015. Yet another reason to go out in the dead of winter. With so much to experience the last thing we want is to spend so much time in traffic, wouldn’t you agree? Projections include a growth in population and more density throughout South Florida. We need mass transportation now, faster than it can get here. If you accept that premise, then it’s reasonable to consider improving your real estaterelated quality of life. To me this means living nearby most of the daily activities that make up “la vie quotidien” and staying within a reasonable radius of the arts, the sports and other entertainment to enjoy. I envision a five to fifteen minute commute to work or school, a short walk to lunch, an evening with friends at a restaurant down the street. On the weekend jump on the Metro Rail to catch a show, walkabout, ride bikes, play soccer, golf and tennis. Take in this wonderful experience with my loved ones. Come to think of it Coral Gables, Downtown Miami, Dadeland, Edgewater District, Miami Beach all are prospects. The next “cooler half of the year” will be the first of many to come. What’s on your canvas and where will you paint it? Frank DeValdivielso, a member the Miami FL Team and The Keyes Company, is based out of 2423 Le Jeune Road, Coral Gables, FL 33134. For more information you can reach Frank at his office, 786 378 8450, or cell, 786 273 8507. PASSION BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
F
OR CISCA CONSTRUCTION CEO FRANK BALLESTE WORKING HIS WAY up from apprentice to CEO of his own company wasn’t just a labor of love, it was a driving passion. “I love this business. I cherish it,” says Balleste. “I think about it every second of the day.” That love began 21 years ago, when apprentice Balleste, the son of Cuban immigrants, found himself pushing a broom on a construction site. After working his way up the ladder, the Miami native realized that his true dream was to work for himself. And so, FGF Construction was born (Balleste later changed the name of the company to Cisca –an ode to his grandmother, Francisca). One of the main reasons Balleste enjoyed creating the company was his ability to do things differently. The first change he made was to embark on staffing his fledgling company with a roster of plumbers, electricians, painters, carpenters and others who would minimize the need for Balleste to wait on subcontractors. By being able to self-perform the majority of the work, Cisca is able to control the quality, schedule, budgets and job safety, for each and every client, at all times. Balleste says that control also allows the Cisca team to give clients a true understanding of time frames and budget. “My motto is always ‘On time, on budget and no b.s.,” he says. And with past and current commercial clients such as Miami-Dade College, Department of Labor, Miami Dade County and Wal-Mart, it seems the motto is paying off. Today, Balleste has seen his workload return to a more residential focus, a turn of events that he says makes both him and his team happy. “I love it,” he says of residential work (the company does both ground-up work and remodels). “I like dealing with residential clients. You put yourself in their shoes and realize the project is almost like their child. I do it like I’m doing It for myself.” For Balleste, who works on projects across the country, that means everything from consulting with architects (they have one in-house) to picking paint colors and drapery. “That’s just another piece of the puzzle I can give the client,” he says. “We can sit down and see what the clients’ needs are, and go back and forth regarding specific needs of the project. We can bounce ideas off of each other and create solutions to challenges that may come up.” Listening to and working with clients starts at the very beginning of the Cisca process. After sending one of his carefully vetted project managers to the site, his team gets together to craft a plan. Once that plan goes

through the team process it ends up on Balleste’s desk, where he gives every estimate the ok before sending it to potential clients. And though it may not always be the cheapest, Balleste is confident it will be the most accurate. “I’m not the cheapest guy and I’m not the most expensive guy, but I’m the guy who’s going to do it right the first time,” says the CEO. “It’s best to pay an honest construction charge once and have it done right.” Part of doing it right, he says, is hiring the right people. As a result of that belief, all potential employees, no matter what the position, are given a 50-question test at the beginning of the hiring process. Question number one? “Can you read a tape measure?,” says Balleste with a laugh. He also compares the hiring process to “marrying into the team. I want an employee who is happy driving into work, knowing they have an ability to grow within the company and that they like their job.” Balleste is most proud of what he calls his “punch-out team,” aka- a three-man team who comes in to thoroughly inspect each job at the close of construction. “They have a 25-to-30 page list,” he says. “They’re looking at everything from drywall finish, paint millage, carpentry workmanship, and overall craftsmanship.” But not all projects are million-dollar listings. In fact, Balleste says he enjoys the smaller jobs as they not only remind him of his company’s humble beginnings (“When I was starting out I would have changed one shower tile if I had to.”) but also often lead to bigger and better things. “We did a bathroom in Pinecrest that four other contractors had attempted and couldn’t complete,” he says. “It took two weeks for our team to correct the issues previous contractors were having and to finalize the renovation. As a result, we received multiple jobs from the appreciative client.” For now, Balleste is enjoying what he calls “the much more personal” residential projects and spending time with his wife (he married his high school sweetheart) and two children. Says Balleste, “Contractors have a bad name. I like that I’m bringing a different breed of contracting to people now.” CISCA Construction is located at 11430 N Kendall Drive, Ste 111, Miami, FL 33176. RBERA, THE NEWLY FDA-APPROVED GASTRIC BALloon procedure promises hope in the obesity battle. The long-awaited non-surgical procedure is now available in the United States and ResultsMD Weight Loss is proud to be the first office-based surgery center in South Florida to offer the outpatient procedure. While new to the United States, Orbera is a weight loss device with more than 220,000 balloons distributed in more than 80 countries; numbers supported by 230 published papers documenting the balloon’s clinical results. Here’s how it works: The Orbera balloon is part of a two-stage program that uses the balloon to take up space in the patient’s stomach, allowing for portion control as well as the sensation of fullness. The balloon is placed empty endoscopically (through the mouth) under a mild sedative in a 20-minute procedure. Once inside the stomach, the balloon is filled with saline; post-procedure the patient receives nutritional support and coaching. After six months, through a second non-surgical outpatient procedure, the balloon is deflated and removed. Both procedures are performed by board certified bariatric surgeons specifically trained by an FDA-approved protocol. Before

Orbera patients are then closely monitored as they follow a nutritional behavior modification program for 12 months following the procedure. A person of average height weighing 230 lbs can lose 30-40 lbs in the six month period, allowing both men and women to gain the health benefits of losing weight- whether in anticipation of plastic surgery, weddings or other life events. Though the procedure is not covered by insurance, financing options are available. Knowing that obesity a chronic condition that tends to worsen over time, doctors are always happy to find new and innovative interventional tools that will prevent the need for invasive surgeries down the line. “For many, the weight loss battle leaves them with few options other than diet and exercise and invasive surgeries,”said Dr. Amaryllis Pascual, Medical Director of ResultsMD Weight Loss. “We are very excited to offer a non-surgical option that bridges this gap. The balloon offers a great kick-start option for many patients where diets alone have failed.” An International, multilingual Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo brings to South Florida a refreshing, modern approach to Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Soler-Baillo earned his Medical Degree at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, trained in General Surgery at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and received extensive training in Plastic Surgery in Miami, New York, and Texas. Dr. Soler-Baillo is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. For more information please visit, www.resultsmd.com or email info@ soler-baillo.com.

Pilates For All BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

OR PILATES IN THE GROVE OWNER CHRISTA GURKA, FITNESS IS AN egalitarian endeavor. The physical therapist and Pilates instructor is emphatic about not only the benefits of a Pilates practice, but about creating the right environment to help students (and patients) flourish. “Our studio is very different,” says Gurka, who opened her first studio on Miami Beach in 2006. “We’re all about bringing [Pilates] to the general population. It’s a very comfortable, very positive environment.” An “athlete most of my life,” Gurka found herself sidelined in college after a sports injury and took an interest in her physical therapy treatments… a twist of fate that led her to a master’s degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Miami. Post-collegiate work in a Pilates-based outpatient facility spurred Gurka to gain Pilates certification and eventually open her own studio. “We were using Pilates-based methods with all of our patients and then sending them off to local studios when their therapy was done,” says Gurka. “I thought ‘Why are we sending them somewhere else?’” Though she eventually shuttered her Miami Christa Gurka, MSPT Beach space, Gurka’s blend of fitness know-how and physiological understanding has made her Grove studio (a South Miami location will open later this year) a mecca for those seeking respite from everything from back pain to injuries since 2010. “I really saw how Pilates helped my practice, not only for fitness but in changing the mechanisms and neuromuscular structure,” she says of the exercise. “We specialize in a lot of back pain. People come to us when nothing else has worked and we’re able to evaluate them and pinpoint within their body the things we can fix through Pilates.” In fact, according to Gurka the surge of back pain patients isn’t coincidental and can be traced back to one very major no-no: Sitting. “Sitting has created a lot of problems,” she says with a sigh. “We’re very stiff; we have poor posture; we lose mobility in our spine. A few segments are taking on the load of our body and they break down.” Gurka likens the breakdown to an office of ten: if eight workers spend their day on lunch break the other two bear the brunt of the work, creating anxiety, stress and illness. “Pilates teaches people how to move their spine in a much more efficient manner. It decreases the stress on the segments that are working overtime.” And sitting repercussions aren’t just for those with a nine-to-five; with kids spending more and more time in front of the computer, problems are popping up in younger generations much earlier than in the past. “I love working with kids,” says Gurka, who has helped train everyone from high school basketball players to a girl’s golf team. “If we can get them while they’re young we can prevent injury and keep them healthy.” In addition to helping those with back pain and injuries, Gurka and her team are especially proud of their work with breast cancer survivors. After noticing that the practice was 60-to-70 percent female, Gurka decided to put her background in physical therapy to work for a female-driven cause, using Pilates work to help those who have undergone mastectomies. “Besides the physicality and being able to stretch, I think it really helps women emotionally to talk about how they were feeling, to be social, to be around other women in the session who went through the same thing,” says Gurka. “It really is such a great way to give back.” Christa Gurka - Not Your Average Pilates Instructor - Is an orthopedic physical therapist specializing in Pilates-based fitness, rehabilitation, injury prevention and weight loss, Christa Gurka’s reputation speaks for itself. With two decades of experience training those of all ages and fitness levels, the founder/owner of Miami’s Pilates in the Grove believes in offering her clients personal attention with expert and well-rounded instruction. HE FIELD OF VETERINARY PHYSICAL THERAPY HAS BEEN EXPANDING rapidly within the last 15 years at national and international levels. This development has been spurred by the demonstration of its efficacy in humans and animals, an increase in technical advancements amongst veterinary surgeons and neurologists, higher owner expectations, and an increase in pet life spans. This rapid growth has led to many misconceptions regarding this field. “Doc, something is wrong with my Rottweiler, Godzilla. He had knee surgery last week. I read in the internet that he needed to swim after surgery so I put him in the pool yesterday. He bruised my arms thrashing about in the water and now he’s having trouble walking. Can you fix him?” or “My Skippy had spinal surgery a year ago and even though I have been doing some PT at home, he is still dragging his legs. Can you rehab him so he can walk again? ” These too-common scenarios demonstrate the lack of knowledge regarding veterinary rehabilitation. It is seen by some as the last resort, but this is contrary to the core principles of physical rehabilitation, which has as its main goal to prevent disuse changes control pain in order to facilitate proper healing and restore mobility. Veterinary rehabilitation is not just running on a treadmill, swimming, leash walks or passive range of motion exercise. It is much, much more than that. It refers to the use of non-invasive techniques (excluding chiropractic techniques) with the goal of controlling pain and returning the patient to full function. Its goals focus on improving balance, flexibility and strength. This field is classified by the AVMA under the specialty College of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. The term “physical therapy” is legally protected and is used exclusively in the human physical therapy field. For this reason, when referring to veterinary medicine we must use the term “physiotherapy” or “rehabilitation” instead. In Florida, only a doctor in veterinary medicine certified in canine rehabilitation is allowed to provide rehabilitation services to animals. A physical therapist certified in animal rehab or a certified veterinary technician that is also certified in animal rehab are both required to be under direct supervision of a veterinarian in order to work on animals legally. The rehabilitation treatment protocol is customized for each patient. It requires a physical therapy diagnosis, specific goals, a detailed plan to reach those goals, and follow up. The veterinary rehabilitator develops an exercise program and understands how to get the patient to do it (this is a challenging phase that requires creativity, imagination, experience, and a great deal of patience). The role of veterinary rehab in the use of orthotics and prosthesis requires acceptance and acclimatization of the device by the patient, learning of task skills for the performance of daily activities, and the improvement of balance, coordination, and proprioception while wearing the new device. The notion of letting the pet use the affected body part when he or she “feels ready” and the reluctance to allow early controlled mobility in conditions where rehabilitation is indicated are concepts of the past. Increase awareness on recent veterinary medical advances is needed in order to prevent misinformation. The performance of physical therapy without guidance and with no knowledge of the discipline can cause serious, permanent damage to the pet. Seek a veterinarian with certification and vast experience on animal rehabilitation. Remember, newer veterinary specialties are only developed to further improve your pet’s quality of life. We welcome you to come and visit us to learn more about this amazing veterinary discipline.

Tips for a Safe Halloween BY FRANK ISTUETA, OWNER, ISTUETA ROOFING
H
ALLOWEEN IS AN EXCITING TIME OF YEAR for kids and grownups alike. But with so much going on, it’s easy to overlook the most basic precautions. So to ensure that everyone has a safe Halloween this year, we’re sharing some of our top tips.
Consider the Costume
of a candle to light your pumpkin; if you do use a candle, a votive candle is the safest option. »» Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, and should never be left unattended.
Home Safe Home
»» Dress your children in bright and reflective costumes, making sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping. »» Add reflective tape or striping to costumes and trickor-treat bags for improved visibility. »» Use non-toxic makeup and decorative hats instead of masks to ensure clear vision. »» Be sure to look for flame-resistant costumes, wigs and accessories. »» Teach children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they have an emergency or become lost.
Preparing the Pumpkin
Treat or Treat! »» A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds. »» If older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you and agree on a specific time when they should return. »» Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat. »» Stay in a group and communicate via cellphone
Happy – and Healthy – Halloween »» A good meal prior to the night’s events will discourage kids from filling up on treats. »» Consider purchasing non-food treats for those who visit your home(coloring books or pens and pencils) »» Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items. If you follow these tips, you and your family will have a safe, happy and healthy Halloween this year!

»» Small children should draw a face with markers and let parents do the cutting. »» Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead
»» To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove anything a child could trip over from the porch and front yard. »» Parents should check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs. »» Restrain pets so they do not accidentally jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.
where you are. »» Stay on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk; never cut across yards or use alleys. »» Only cross the street in established crosswalks and never cross between parked cars. »» Don’t assume the right of way - motorists may have difficulty seeing trick-or-treaters.

Skills Amnesia Leads to Digital Depression
Are you pAying too much Are you pAying too for your insurAnce? Are you pAying too much much for for your your insurAnce? insurAnce?
BY LUIS ORTEGA, OWNER, SECURITY ARMS INTERNATIONAL
A
FTER SITTING IN MIAMI MORNING TRAFFIC, DO YOU ever get to the office motivated and ready to take charge, only to have your day go down the drain by 9:00 am? We open our desktops and are immediately drawn into the vortex of rushing messages, notifications, and phone calls. Mismanaged use of email, smart phones, texts and tablets in the workplace is causing “Digital Depression” - a feeling of being powerless and unable to keep pace, leading to high stress levels and decreasing productivity. By the time we learn to use the latest software program or tech toy we feel pressured to upgrade to the newest version. (Hello, Apple store!) Today’s technology offers fantastic potential but many people find themselves controlled by it, and if you aren’t careful, technology can actually increase your workload rather than increase your productivity. Fortunately, this techno-malady is identifiable and self-treatable, with some help. Here are four symptoms of Digital Depression: Stressed by accessibility Being constantly available by cell phone, or the latest wireless device, means being constantly interrupted. Each call or message you respond to is diverting your attention from your key priorities. Your inability or unwillingness to “unplug” contributes to increased stress. Insecurity due to Digital Darwinism An anxious feeling based on the belief that a technological evolutionary process is taking place and only those who master every program, every upgrade and every gadget will survive. The pressure to acquire the newest wireless all-in-one cell phone - digital assistant-remote control device - to augment existing collection of gadgets and toys, regardless of whether it enhances productivity. Continuous partial attention An inability to concentrate on one task until completion - brought on by a 24/7 world with shorter deadlines and a faster pace. Urgent matters take precedent over important matters, and time isn’t taken to reflect on decisions or to “sleep on it”. Personal productivity declines as a result. Cognitive Interruptus A state of permanent interruption. Whether it’s the smartphone or email alarm, every interruption deflects you from your daily plan, increasing your workload and sense of anxiety. The root cause of Digital Depression, is skills amnesia - in the rush to keep pace with technology trends, people are forgetting to apply basic essential management skills such as planning, managing their priorities, setting goals, communication and delegating. If you recognize any or all of these symptoms, here are a few guidelines to help you maintain control… »» Schedule time to unplug yourself from your job, to unwind and maintain a healthy balance in your life. »» Invest in new skills training just as you invest in new hardware and software. »» Always consider the cost/benefit and return on investment before purchasing new technology. »» You should be able to specifically define how the technology or device will make you more effective at your job. »» Identify your priorities every day. Use these as the basis of your daily plan and stick to it. Achieving that coveted balance between work and life is possible through self-control, which in turn increases our productivity and reduces our stress. Daily planning is the critical process to taking control of our workload and managing our priorities. Before our digital depression permanently settles in, with some skills training, we can bring the future into the present so that we can do something about it now! Luis Ortega is a Certified Productivity Trainer with Priority Management, a worldwide training company with 75 offices in 15 countries and more than two million graduates in programs that help companies and people be more effective in and out of the office. For more information on how to implement a better way to work, feel free to contact him at ceo@saiops.com.
