OVEMBER IS HERE, AND IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE we’re in the final stretch of another calendar year. The holiday season is officially upon us, and we are looking forward to a wonderful Thanksgiving spent with those we love. This time of year gives us the perfect opportunity to take stock of all there is to be thankful for. At the top of the list, of course, is good health and great family and friends. And let’s not forget this amazing community we live in, with its beautiful weather and abundance of fun events for everyone to enjoy. For a complete list of upcoming events, check out the Events Calendar (page 8). And don’t miss this month’s special feature, the first annual Gift Guide, to find the perfect match for everyone on your list (page 30-39). We also invite you to read about Lisa Merkin, this month’s featured philanthropist (page 16). Her work with animals has been a lifelong calling that’s led to her dedication to Paws 4 You. And lastly, if you’ve been looking for a great turkey recipe for Thanksgiving, don’t miss ‘Frank’s Famous Turkey Brine Recipe’ from Istueta Roofing owner Frank Istueta (page 55). Don’t forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), Instagram (@thefloridavillager), and Google + (The Florida Villager). Experience Nail Care in a Whole New Way!
Whole Foods Market is partnering with South Florida’s popular Funky Buddha Brewery to debut a Floridian spent grain sourdough bread. Two months in the making, the partnership began when Funky Buddha Brewery provided David McAndrew, Whole Foods Market’s Bakehouse Facility Team Leader with spent grain used to make their Floridian Hefeweizen beer. “We usually give the grains to farmers and when Whole Foods Market approached us, we loved the idea of teaming up to recycle the grains,” said John Linn, Brand Director of Funky Buddha Brewery. “Whole Foods Market is all about upcycling and so are we.” The bread hit shelves in late October at 25 Florida locations.

Palmetto Elementary School celebrated Peace Week from October 5 through 9. This year, the focus of the annual celebration was, “Celebrate Diversity,” a theme drawn from a photo exhibit that traveled to the school. The exhibit, which consisted of boards inspired by the Celebrate Diversity Miami Photo-Voice exhibit created by Naomi Ross, founder of Celebrate Diversity Miami, was the result of people around Miami submitting photos that highlight diversity in their communities. At the request of PES Counselor Julie Astuto, Ross not only brought the exhibit to the school, but also held two assemblies for students to discuss the meaning of diversity and the importance of celebrating our differences. While the exhibit had to travel on to be shared with others, Astuto recognized the importance of keeping a tangible reminder of these lessons at the school. Under her guidance, the students created their own diversity boards, which will be on permanent display at the school as a way to remind everyone to appreciate and celebrate the many cultures and backgrounds that make up the Palmetto Elementary School community. “There is a saying that is often spoken, but that we really want to be sure our students understand,” noted Astuto. “That is, ‘We are all unique and beautiful; together, we are a masterpiece!’” The school also unveiled two new water fountains, fit with bottle refilling stations, for children to use in the cafeteria and in the halls. The bottle refilling station is equipped with a counter that shows students how many bottles have been saved by refilling instead.

Sometimes the right “fit” can save a life. Drivers who have a good grasp of the steering wheel, clear views of the road and driver’s mirrors are less likely to get into a car accident. That was the idea behind Pinecrest’s CarFit event on October 22. Developed through collaboration among the American Society on Aging, AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association, CarFit offers older adults the opportunity to check how their cars “fit” them. Trained professionals led older drivers through a 12-point checklist with their vehicle, recommended car adjustments and adaptations and offered community specific resources and activities that could make their cars “fit” better or enhance their safety. An occupational therapist was also on hand to provide information to older drivers on how to maintain and strengthen driving health.

NAME:
Lisa Merkin ORGANIZATION:
Paws 4 You paws4you.org
ABOUT HER WORK: A 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer, donor-subsidized animal rescue organization, Paws 4 You works to save dogs from euthanasia at Miami-Dade Animal Services, where more than 27,000 unwanted pets end up each year. “Once we have committed to an animal, they will have the best care possible no matter what,” says Merkin. The organization depends on their volunteer “family” to help care for the rescued animals, some of whom may require major surgery, additional rehabilitation time or specific medical care. They then take the animals to events around the community with the hope of finding a forever home. “When you see a dog wag its tail after being rescued or a family smile when they take their new dog home, we know we are making a difference,” says Merkin.
UPCOMING PLANS: Aside from continuing their work on behalf of “those who can’t speak for themselves,” Merkin says the organization is focusing on educating the community at large about pet overpopulation. “It’s vital that people understand the importance of spaying and neutering their animals so that we eliminate the number of strays.” On a weekly basis Merkin and her fellow volunteers (“Our volunteers are everything,” says Merkin) host pet adoption events every Sunday at PetSmart Pinecrest as well as on the last Saturday of each month at their shelter and are looking forward to their annual “Casino Night” fundraiser in January. “We are one of the good guys,” says Merkin. “Everything we do is do for the benefit of the animals.”
‘‘
When you see a dog wag its tail after being rescued or a family smile when they take their new dog home, we know we are making a difference.
‘‘
BACKGROUND: Lisa Merkin’s work with animals has been a true lifelong calling, beginning back in childhood and evolving into her dedication to Paws 4 You. “I have always been involved with animals whether it be horses or dogs...,” says Merkin. “Even as a child I tried to save every lost dog that I found.” In fact, her friendship with Carol Caridad (Paws 4 You’s CEO) began at the age of 11, making her allegiance to the organization a natural fit for both her love of animals and ties to the community as founder of social media company, Around Pinecrest. “I grew up in the Pinecrest/Palmetto Bay Area and have very strong ties to this community,” she says.

T’S HARD TO GET KIDS TO EAT THEIR VEGETABLES, BUT AT HOWARD DRIVE Elementary school, located at the corners of 136th Street and 77th Avenue, students form a long line for anything green on Fridays. Howard Drive Elementary parents Liz VanDeWater and Karin Rumie, along with the school’s PTA and several helpers, have made Fruity Fridays a passion. Each Friday, seasonal fresh fruits, juices and veggies are purchased, cut up and sold in the breezeway on the way to the carpool area after school. The generous fruit and juice servings are $1, and the veggies are free for the taking, so students have an opportunity to try something different and increase their food palate. At a recent Fruity Friday, students gulped down all-natural, freshly squeezed apple cider, and noshed on honey-crisp apple slices, while they tried some refreshingly crunchy snow peas. “We just want kids to try new, healthy foods, whether it’s carrots, sweet potato, celery, kale chips or snow peas,” explained VanDeWater. “Kids love the kale chips and we’re usually wiped out of those fairly quickly.” In accordance with district policy on food sold at schools, HDE strives to offer healthy options that will enrich its students’ nutrition and health. At least half of children worldwide suffer from one or more micronutrient deficiency, such as iron, iodine, vitamin A, folate and zinc, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Deficiencies in these nutrients can have devastating consequences for brain development, growth and immunity. “We are so fortunate to have such passionate parents who have dedicated every week to our students. The seeds of nutrition they plant today will no doubt have an effect on the way our students eat in the future,” declared HDE Principal Deanna Dalby. During a recent Fruity Friday, VanDeWater said she made $82 on the produce offered and said it makes her feel good that the kids are eating natural foods instead of candy or processed, salty snacks. The profits for the program go right back into the PTA fund, but only cover some of the costs. In the past, the Fruity Friday team has partnered with local vendors to provide fruit and veggie smoothies. “We’re looking for more partnerships, donations and sponsorships from the community and our parents here at the school,” stated Rumie. While they’re determined to lead kids to healthy food choices, they’d like to expand the offerings. “It’s so rewarding to see happy faces when they taste something new,” she said. “This is a worthy service that PTA is involved in and we hope for more community involvement,” said PTA President Nicole Connolly. “It’s Liz’s last year at Howard Drive—her daughter graduates this school year—so we want to be sure that what she started here continues for years to come.”

An Entrepreneurial Spirit BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
A
NYONE WHO HAS LOST A PET CAN RELATE to the panic and worry that comes with missing a furry friend. Luckily, one enterprising Coral Gables High School student has a solution…and $5,000 seed money. On October 1st Gables High senior Khareem Oliver was awarded first place in the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship’s (NFTE) LaunchED Challenge for his business “Find or Found,” an innovative app/website that helps pet owners keep tabs on their animals. “It works with a pet tag that has a QR code on it,” explains Oliver, who is currently a student in Gables’ Academy of Finance program. “Every time the QR code is scanned it’ll send the owner a GPS notification via email or text message.” The students that participated in the LaunchED Challenge were selected from 21 participants in Gables High senior Khareem Oliver Startup Summer, an intense eight-week teen business incubator organized by NFTE at the Miami Dade College Idea Center for advanced high school entrepreneurs under support from the Citi Foundation. Over the summer, each student received a laptop, $1,000 in seed capital, a $1,000 stipend; as well as intense one-on-one mentoring and support to launch the business. The “Shark Tank”-style event allowed four of those students to pitch their businesses to a panel of entrepreneurs and executives IO re sto OCAT w e L n b ig N E W o u r OUR n i AT a re We IT US S VI
for a chance to win a portion of $11,000 in seed capital to invest in their business. With his win, Oliver hopes to continue on with the app idea, looking for a developer or potential partner in South Florida to code the smartphone application and website. “’I’m also contacting a manufacturer that can go ahead and start the production of the Smart QR Tags,” he says. In addition to Oliver, winners from the event (judged by Albert Santalo, Founder of CareCloud and Wifredo Fernandez, Director of CREATE Miami at Miami Dade College among others) included Gabriel Martinez, who won $3,000 for his school supply vending machine business GAMV; Janeiya Henderson who won $1,500 with Pebbles Tutoring; and Justin Rivas who also won $1,500 for his basketball tournament company Top Level Athletics. Moving on to college, Oliver says his entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well, (“I’m always thinking of new ways to innovate, to help others and to make life simple.”) and that his time in the program has given him not only the funds to move forward with his business but the encouragement to keep thinking of the next big idea. Says Oliver, “The biggest lesson that I took away from this summer is if you’re given an opportunity to do something you go ahead and take it!”

PROLOTHERAPY is a noninvasive and safe technique that can provide a permanent cure for many chronic painful conditions without the need for surgery or steroids. Prolotherapy stimulates your body’s healing mechanisms to strengthen ligaments and tendons and thus relieve pain. Prolotherapy is used for all joint pains especially knees and shoulders and hips, and all forms of low back pain/lumbar spine dysfunction. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) promotes healing by releasing growth factors into the painful site. PRP combined with prolotherapy and/ or stem cells makes the injured tissue heal faster and better and relieve pain. Stem Cell Prolotherapy is a more advanced technique to heal and repair injured painful tissues. Stem cells are taken from the bone marrow and adipose tissue (fat) and concentrated, then injected into the injured area. Stem cells work well for the more advanced arthritis and joint injuries.
AGE MANAGEMENT involves enabling you to live younger and have a healthy lifespan with longevity. Improve energy levels (including sexual energy), lean muscle mass, bone density, cognitive function, and immune system function that may allow for a prolonged diseasefree life. Loose weight, lower cholesterol and glucose (sugar) levels, normalize blood pressure and reduce the sources of inflammation in the body. From Testosterone to Estrogen and HGH and HCG, our therapies are based on Biomarkers of Aging and Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluations. Our private line of vitamins and supplements “BodyFood” provides high quality and correct potency to obtain the desired result. High end products such as TA65 and Celergen are exclusively carried here.
GENSKIN AESTHETICS/LASERS offers the latest treatments and therapies for the skin; most of which are not readily available elsewhere. We can make up specialized creams and lotions using one’s own stem cells to regenerate, revitalize, repair and rejuvenate, in addition to carrying the best of the best in exclusive and hard to obtain products, sparing no expense if we feel it works after extensive studies and evaluation by our team of experts.

Politics for the Newly Legal
nini & Ioli

BY JESS ROLNICK
W
ITH THE PRELIMINARY ROUND OF ELECTIONS APPROACHING, MY month-old status of adulthood has become an extreme reality rather quickly. While some of my friends seem well informed about political issues, up to date on every word and move within the Democratic and Republican debates, and able to hold conversations for hours on end regarding controversial issues - I seem to be unable to do the same. As one of the oldest in my group of friends, I should be more up to date on the news that is sweeping the country and able to get involved in these conversations. However, adulthood is new to me and so is the true concern of politics. Right now, I really only know what I hear around me. All of my “sources” involve lunchtime debates and social media. Maybe I am eighteen and maybe I am legally an adult. This is the future that is in front of me and I’m part of the majority that can voice it. However, I’m still in high school, and supported by my family; I have yet to feel the true responsibility as an adult. Many of these political issues seem so far fetched from anything that pertains to me. It takes a lot to sit down, do my research and truly stay informed. It’s still difficult grasping the concept that I can vote, let alone taking a side and acting upon it. For now, I plan to remain seated in the unknown, dark end of not fully understanding what my political views are. I’ll continue to listen to the media and begin to take a closer look into these issues and viewpoints. As the fall 2016 elections come closer, the reality will hit; I need to stand up, be aware, and take advantage of the rights I receive as a citizen. But for now, I stand with the undecided and less informed, as the newly legal adult with no clue about politics… but the desire to learn.

F THE AVERAGE PERSON SAW ME WALKING DOWN THE STREET OR ON CAMPUS they would probably comment on my outfit or notice my University of Miami cheerleading backpack. They would never be able to tell that I have Multiple Sclerosis (MS), that is the beauty of my disease. For those of you who do not know what MS is, it is an autoimmune disease that attacks the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and damages the protective covering of the nerves. I was diagnosed with MS when I was 16-years-old and have not had a symptom since my initial diagnosis. Throughout my journey of living with MS, I have not let it define me. I achieved many of my goals: High school cheerleading captain, winning worlds with my competitive cheerleading team, getting involved with Shop to Stop MS, graduating high school with a 3.7 GPA while taking AP courses, getting accepted to the University of Miami, making the University of Miami cheerleading squad and now double majoring in Public Relations and Broadcast Journalism. This all could not have been achieved without my amazing parents, Kim and Lee Sterling, I would not be where I am today and I can honestly say they are the best team around. I know I do not say it enough but thank you mom and dad. Seeing you both cry when I was in the hospital and when I was diagnosed only inspired me to be strong for you two. You have given me the absolute world, given me all the tools to succeed and have supported me throughout everything. Many people questioned my decision to go to the University of Miami because I was “too close to home but you encouraged me to make the choice on what was best for me. Who would want to leave their parents if they were as amazing as mine? By staying in Miami you both realized I could keep going to my amazing doctors at UM and continue my passion for cheerleading. I have never been happier and I hope more kids from the Miami area consider UM because we truly take what is in our own backyard for granted. I went to public school my whole life so to be able to go to a private university where my classes are smaller than the classes I had in high school is truly a blessing. Mom and dad really do know best. It seems almost that my life began to fall into place and that I found my purpose post diagnosis. Once I met Nicki Friedland, who also had MS and who has served as someone I admire and look up to, I was inspired to join Shop to Stop MS and give back to my school, the place where I (and many other who have MS) receive treatment. The 7th annual Shop to Stop MS will be held on November 18th at Saks Fifth Avenue Dadeland Mall and will be filled with a fun night of delicious food, dancing and shopping - all to support MS research. To preorder your tickets go to www.miami.edu/shoptostopms.

MAYOR OF PALMETTO BAY
I
AM SO PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE PALMETTO BAY Youth Advisory Council held its initial meeting Monday, October 26. Not since the development of our first Parks Master Plan more than eight years ago have we asked our youth what they want to see in their Village. It was long overdue. Councilwoman Karyn Cunningham is serving alongside me as Council Liaison to this committee. Our new “YAC” will greatly assist in getting teenagers active in our Village, a priority of both Councilwoman Siegel Lara and me, and our entire Village Council. It’s important to be responsive to our young people, but also to the young at heart – the seniors in our community. We are now considering several age-friendly initiatives to be developed as part of our strategic plan that will reflect senior wants and needs, as well. In fact, I have signed on with our County Mayor’s Challenge to create an age-friendly community, where older adults in Miami-Dade can stay active and healthy with dignity and enjoyment. All senior-focused initiatives will be integral to our Parks & Recreation program, to our Public Services initiatives, and to our business development plans here in Palmetto Bay. It’s more than just events and activities for seniors – it is making sure our development, and our overall infrastructure is age-friendly, as well. Please continue to keep me up to date with what is important to you. My direct e-mail is eflinn@palmettobay-fl.gov. You may also reach out to the entire five-member Village Council by sending one single e-mail to: council@palmettobay-fl.gov.

Redefining Education
PINECREST’S ROIG ACADEMY OFFERS STUDENTS A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO EVERYDAY LEARNING.
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
N
OT ALL STUDENTS THRIVE IN A TRADITIONAL school environment. In fact, for many that feeling of not conforming to the norm can result in negative feelings about school or feelings of being left out or not good enough. Enter The Roig Academy. The tiny private school, tucked away just west of the highway in Pinecrest, prides itself on welcoming children, accepting them for who they are and placing focus on their individual strengths. “Each child who walks through our front doors is welcomed into a nurturing environment and made to feel like they belong,” says Head of School Jennifer Roig. We sat down with Roig to learn more about the unique school, the philosophy behind its learning process and why every student deserves an opportunity to be great.
“The Roig Academy is an absolute gem! The wonderful change that has occurred in our son is remarkable. We are amazed to see him laughing and enjoying school. He is filled with such confidence. He is excelling academically and really feels good about himself. What a blessing and pure delight to entrust our son to such a loving, patient, and nurturing environment where he is learning to soar! I wish every child could experience The Roig Academy blessing.”
Mindy TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THE SCHOOL’S CREATION. The Roig Academy was created out of a vision to offer an innovative form of education for students who, for a variety of reasons, whether academic, or social, are not successful in a traditional educational setting. This vision came to fruition in 2000 and has been growing and strengthening ever since.
WHAT WAS THE PHILOSOPHY WHEN IT OPENED? The philosophy has always been to support students through an individualized and holistic approach. It is through this approach that students begin to nurture their own academic success and find further growth in the areas of social and emotional wellness.
WHAT TYPES OF STRUGGLES DO YOU SEE IN CHILDREN NOT COMFORTABLE IN THAT TRADITIONAL SETTING AND HOW DOES THE ROIG ACADEMY ADDRESS THOSE? In a traditional learning environment students are placed in a classroom as the result of their chronological age. In this style of learning environment, students, who for various reasons do not conform to the standards of a “typical” child of the same age often struggle to find academic success. These struggles then translate into the development of a poor self-image, increased anxiety and a lack of confidence. These students often internalize these negative feelings and feel that they cannot achieve, that school is “too hard” and are withdrawn in their academic journey. In contrast, when students are placed in a classroom based upon their individual academic strengths and their areas of need, students are provided with greater opportunities for academic success.
FOCUSING ON EACH CHILD’S UNIQUE NEEDS SEEMS TO BE A HUGE BENEFIT, HOW DOES THAT MANIFEST IN ROIG’S DAILY ENVIRONMENT? Students at The Roig Academy are provided with one-onone learning opportunities that focus on their specific areas of needs. Many students have learning throughout their day that allows for individualized instruction and attention from the teacher. These opportunities allow students to focus on their areas of need. For instance, if a student requires more support in the area of literacy, that student has an academic schedule that is reflective of this area and provided with further support from the teacher, separate from the needs of their peers.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON REASONS PARENTS SEEK OUT THE SCHOOL? Some parents have found that traditional educational settings are limited in their ability to diversify and individualize an academic path for a child and as a result these students are the ones often “left behind” and parents are left feeling hopeless, discouraged and frustrated for their child. Parents are looking for opportunities for their child to learn and grow in an environment that recognizes and nurtures their uniqueness.
ROIG IS A SCHOOL, GEARED TOWARD PREPARING STUDENTS TO REJOIN A LARGER LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, HOW LONG DO MOST STUDENTS REMAIN IN THE SCHOOL? Students stay until they are ready to transition into a different learning environment. Each student’s level of readiness will look differently, therefore there is no predetermined time set that each student must adhere to. A student’s level of readiness is assessed throughout their learning journey. Parents, teachers, other professionals and the student themselves are part of an ongoing conversation.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT MAKES YOUR FACULTY SPECIAL AND HOW THEY WORK WITH THE STUDENTS. Teachers at The Roig Academy have an awareness and understanding of each their students. With this, teachers are able to provide a greater level of individualized support and intervention, not only academically, but emotionally and socially as well. Teachers become a trusting and caring person in the lives of each their students and are able to foster a deeper love for learning as a result.
The Roig Academy serves PK2-8th grade and is located at at 8000 SW 112th Street in Pinecrest. For more information you can call 305.235.1313 or visit www.roigacademy.com.

And, of course, Gutierrez says, if you want to go completely personal, a gift card will allow the giftee to choose exactly what’s missing from their closet. What You Need To Know Before Selling Your Diamonds BY JOHN O’ROURKE, OWNER, MONTICA JEWELRY
A
DIAMOND IS FOREVER, BUT THERE MAY COME A TIME when you want to part with it. Perhaps you’ve inherited jewelry as part of an estate that includes real estate and other assets like stocks. You may want to use the sale of the jewelry to offset the costs of taxes or other expenses and keep the other assets for the future. Or, if a marriage ends you may want to sell a ring and use the money towards a fresh start. No matter the reason that motivates you to sell, it’s important to educate yourself and approach the sale with as little emotion as possible. Unlike gold, which is priced based on purity and melt value, diamonds have many ways to measure their worth. Some are subjective and others can be determined during an appraisal. In the case of a wedding ring or inherited jewelry you may not have been present during the initial purchase and may not know the type of cut or quality of the gem. Let’s uncover the mysteries of diamond selling so you’ll feel comfortable as you go through the process.
Find out about your diamond. The market doesn’t take into account it was your mother’s jewelry and she felt it was valuable. Take the stone to a qualified appraiser who can give you an analysis of the stone’s characteristics and condition. You’ll discover valuable information like the type of cut, how it reflects light and if there are any inclusions that could affect its value.
Expect a realistic price. People are often disappointed with the price offered in comparison to what they thought something might be worth. Ask your appraiser how much the stone might be worth in specific markets and circumstances. Market trends can drive prices up or down. Looking at online sales can be frustrating since no two diamonds are the same and prices may vary based on the weight and quality of the stone. You can compare your pre-worn diamond with new settings in retail stores, but keep in mind that stores have to mark-up their inventory to cover rent, salaries, promotion, taxes and insurance. Someone buying your stone may offer only what the stone is worth without all those added costs.
Evaluate your selling options. You have two choices – sell to the public or to the jewelry industry. Selling to the public involves finding the right buyer willing to pay your price. The process can be lengthy or you may never even find a suitable buyer. Selling through online sites means you’ll pay a commission as much as 15 percent and you may need to filter out several scam artists. The advantage of selling to a jeweler is that they can usually complete the transaction quickly. So if safety and time is a concern for you or you don’t want to fuss over marketing and negotiation, your best course of action is to approach a jeweler. Jewelers may also offer you a good deal on a trade-in for a new diamond or other jewelry.
Be ready to sell. Try to eliminate emotion from the process. Jewelry is often symbolic of a memory from an important milestone of your life but you may not always retain the sentiment. You’ll know when it’s time to move on. Knowing that someone else may enjoy what was once yours or part of your family can be uplifting. John O’Rourke, and wife Marichi, own Montica Jewelery in downtown Coral Gables. Diamonds and diamond jewelry have been our family’s passion for more than 34 years. IT ’S T HEIR BU S INES S
Under The Yellow Canopy BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
J
OANNA VAN DIJK’S JOURNEY FROM PSYCHOLOGIST IN HOLLAND TO home design store owner in Miami isn’t as big a leap as it may seem. In fact, The Yellow Canopy owner’s time in private practice was just a part of the eclectic global experience (real estate agent in the South of France, airline employee traveling the globe) that brought her to where she is today. “I was always interested in home design,” says van Dijk. “During my real estate experience in the South of France I met so many people as both clients and designers, and my interest and love in home design really ignited. With that interest in home design, experience and contacts, I decided five years ago to open an eclectic home décor store.” First at home in the Bird Road Art District, van Dijk moved The Yellow Canopy (which she describes as “an eclectic mix of French Baroque, shabby chic vintage and statement accessories”) to the Falls area in order to support her desire for not only more space, but a warehouse for her constantly growing inventory. Since then she has welcomed a variety of clients—from designers to those looking to add a unique touch to their home—to the shop and has built a reputation for balancing comfort with style. “A home is extremely important and you should feel comfortable and happy in your own house,” says van Dijk, who imports the pieces herself to keep prices reasonable. “We like to advise clients how to change their house into their home. We encourage them to mix different styles to create a unique and personalized feel. An individual approach is important.” That kind of outside-the-box thinking inspired van Dijk to create another aspect to her business in the form of a rental section, using her unique pieces to complement other rental companies more classic options. “For example, we rent our gorgeous baroque chairs for the bride and groom at a wedding,” she says. “We can add something unique for quinces, birthdays, baptisms, showers. You name it. And it’s all on the website.” In addition to her blossoming rental business, van Dijk also created a studio space in her warehouse, allowing photographers to use both the space and the furniture for a reasonable fee.
Though the event and styling work may add new duties to her daily business life, van Dijk says her true love comes from the hunt and from finding “that one piece that can transform a room.” Her global take on design also helps drive her buys. “I like to travel, to meet other people and get inspired by other cultures,” she says. “Every time we have a container coming in I am thrilled. I know what is inside, but it’s always an exciting happening to get the items out of the container and bring them inside The Yellow Canopy.” The Yellow Canopy is located in The Warehouses by the Falls at 8787 SW 132nd St, Miami, FL 33176. For more information, please visit theyellowcanopy. com or call 305-252-2266. The Yellow Canopy is open Monday - Friday: 11 am - 6 pm, Saturday: 11 am - 5 pm, and closed on Sunday.

Put Some Sugar Under Your Skis BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ
family owned since 1983
S
UGAR MOUNTAIN, THAT IS. LOCATED IN NORTH CAROLINA, SUGAR IS A great way to get your skiing fix when time is a factor. With 125 acres of skiable terrain and 21 slopes, there is something for every level skier, including 15 slopes that are lit for night skiing. I have to say, there is something magical about night skiing and if you have never done it, you must try it here. Traveling the short distance from Beech Mountain to try out my second ski destination in North Carolina, I was taken by the beauty of the mountains. No, it’s not Europe and no, it’s not Western U.S. or even New England skiing but there is something so special about the resorts in North Carolina, especially if you are just getting your ski legs. Coming here for a quick weekend of skiing, to feel the crunch of snow under my boots and the crispness of the air on my face was such a far cry from Miami; it was just what the doctor ordered.
I only had one day to experience all the activities and I didn’t want to miss one minute, so I quickly made my way to the 10,000 square foot ice skating rink, laced up my skates and I was off. It suddenly occurred to me I had lost track of time and had to hustle to meet up with my snowshoeing guide. For the next hour we made our way in silence up trails, down banks and along a creek bed under the dangling crystals of ice that had formed on the snow draped trees. Back at the lodge, exhausted but undaunted, I grabbed some hot chocolate and headed for the slopes. Gunther’s Way had just opened and there was no way I was leaving Sugar Mountain without swooshing down its 700-foot vertical. The lift lines are pretty nonexistent so I was able to knock off a few more runs before the little kid in me took over. My final destination was tubing. I have to admit, I saved the best for last and they literally had to kick me off. I was still begging for one more time as they were closing for the day. Not a happy camper, I trudged back to the car and settled in for the short ride to Lost Province. Lost Province is a microbrewery and gastropub that offers a wide selection of craft beers and wood-fired pizza. By the time my order arrived I was twice as hungry as when I walked in. The aroma of the pizzas in the ovens sent my stomach into a low continuous growl. I’m embarrassed to say how much I ate (and drank) but suffice to say, I was very content as I said my goodbyes and headed to the hotel; another day of skiing awaited me the next morning. The last thing I remember hearing was the drip of a melting icicle outside my bedroom window as my room slowly faded away. info@southmiamijewelers.net

The Gift of Music: A Gift That Lasts a Lifetime BY IRIS COHEN
D
O YOU KNOW A MUSIC LOVER THAT YOU WANT TO BUY A SPECIAL GIFT for? There are lots of neat gadgets and equipment that your musician would love to get and would probably appreciate more than the typical after shave, tie or socks! Just about this time of year you will ask or be asked the seasons most frequently asked question…What do you want for Christmas? If you are like me, this is the moment that your mind goes blank and you come up with some lame response. Of course, after I have given them some dumb answer, I actually come up with a huge list of my “wants.” Unfortunately, this epiphany comes much later and then I am too embarrassed to tell them what terrific, “gotta have” things I have come up with.

ENTIRE STORE. ALL ITEMS.
It is hard for a non-musician to figure out what to buy for a musician without coming right out and asking them. So what do you do? You are pretty sure that they would like to have something related to the instrument they play, but since you are not a musician and probably don’t know what they already have, you are kind of stuck. You could ask them, but then it wouldn’t be a surprise. And what if they ask for something that is not in your budget? There are many items that would be useful and appreciated regardless of what instrument is played, and many of them can be purchased for under $10. For example, just about any musician could use a music stand. There are a wide variety of music stands to choose from; light weight portable models as well as heavy duty stationary types. Most string instruments need to be tuned prior to every performance. While many musicians have a tuner, having a second one allows them to keep one in their gig bag and another at home or at the studio. What else? Consider buying your favorite musician a guitar/instrument stand, or a cool strap or a capo for your acoustic guitar player, or a microphone or…get the idea? There are lots and lots of gifts to choose from, but if the choices get too overwhelming for you, there is always the favorite of all…the gift certificate! Let the professionals at Musicians Discount Center in South Miami help you make this holiday season come alive with the sounds of music. They are the one stop music shop that has been sharing their expertise with others for many years. They offer new and used instruments, instrument rentals, rent to own programs, and music lessons. R E AL ESTAT E TALK
We’re Attached to People, Not Walls! BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO
T
HE BUSINESS OF SELLING RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE often reveals these competing priorities. Some homeowners are so attached to the home that you can sense they have grown roots down into the foundation and are essentially part of the structure, while others perceive the residence as a material component of their lives that can easily be traded in for another model. Some people love their homes and feel an attachment outside of reason. It can be that the home brings memories of moments and times that are cherished. When the discussion of moving to another place comes about the body language and vocabulary clearly demonstrate they’re not moving. “They’ll take me from here straight to the cemetery,” is a far too common response. Often we also hear that there has to be room for the kids when they come back to visit. Living in the hope that they do come back to visit has an opportunity cost also measured in time, wouldn’t you agree? What can you do with that time if you live near the kids? Or parents, siblings and those that are truly important in one’s life? Once we’re given the opportunity to decide, why do we let the four walls have such weight on the decision? Moving on and evolving is a conscious choice that is best made for oneself, isn’t it? On the other hand there are those that are not attached to the home beyond its useful purpose. If another home comes on the market that is more suitable to their needs, they move. Really. No drama, just a decision made because it makes sense. This can be someone that is moving to a larger home because they have been graced with another child and need an extra bedroom. It can also be the family that is right sizing to a three-bedroom home because five bedrooms are too many for a couple. After all, it is cheaper to put the kids and grandchildren up in a five-star hotel the one time they do visit every year, than to pay the taxes on the five-bedroom home. When the financial crunch came around some years ago, the perception by homeowners was more practical than emotional. We all know someone or another who defaulted on their loan as a financial strategy. No roots there. So, now that our homes are worth more than the debt on them, why the emotional attachment? Eventually as homeowners grow older the inevitable conclusion is that it’s more about whom you’re with than where you are. This holiday season can be a very good barometer to help determine whom you want to be nearby for the foreseeable future. The current real estate market allows for move-up, right size moves and relocation to Anywhere USA. Take full advantage and make good use of this market for the next phase in life. We’re all very grateful for a stable and appreciating market. If you can move to be close to “them,” (whomever it might be) then go for it! Tick, tock…vv Frank DeValdivielso, a member the Miami FL Team and The Keyes Company, is based out of 2423 Le Jeune Road, Coral Gables, FL 33134. HY DO WE EXERCISE? WHY DO WE PUT OURSELVES in periods of extreme discomfort numerous times per week through weight training and cardio or through hot yoga and pilates? Most of us who exercise frequently have no goal or intention of becoming a professional athlete, stepping on a bodybuilding stage or competing with anyone other than ourselves - so, what is it that drives us? I was a competitive athlete all through my school years and eventually got into competitive bodybuilding. Ironically, exercise became more of a natural part of my life after I ended my pursuit of those endeavors. Throughout sports and bodybuilding, working out felt like a chore - a responsibility, in many ways, something that I had to do as a necessity for my other purpose. It was only once I became a part of the professional world, became more consumed by day to day responsibilities that characterize life after college, that I began to really enjoy exercising. Rather than being a necessary evil, it became a necessary release - a catharsis and an escape from my daily responsibilities. I found that on the days that I exercises, I was more centered at work, more productive and more focused. I believe that one of the greatest benefits of exercise beyond the obvious health and physical aspects - is mental. For most of us, our days are spent in a controlled environment, generally working on a means to an end, to some degree. Going to the gym and lifting weights, going outside and running, doing yoga or any variety of physical exercise provides a much-needed escape from the mundane, from the average. It gets our adrenaline pumping, it releases endorphin, it makes us feel even primal. It provides us with a feeling of release that we do not normally get. Finally, exercise gives us an amazing aspect of control. Our body - the results we achieve from diet and exercise - is one of the few, if only, things that we have complete and utter control over. We can choose to lose weight, build muscle, get stronger, get faster, get more flexible based on our own desires and dedications without the interference or involvement of outside influences. It is extremely satisfying to look in the mirror and know your reflection is a byproduct of your own dedication and desires. For those of you currently following a dedicated exercise routine, keep going! Take it up a notch and add an extra day or even get a personal trainer to push you further! Set a goal that may seem impossible to reach and try to achieve it. For those of you that have not yet taken the fitness plunge, start now - you will be amazed by the control and balance it provides your life. Building a Culture of Inclusion in STEM BY SIDHARTH OBEROI, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICER OF ZANIAC
B
Y NOW, MOST AMERICANS ARE AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. It is widely accepted that for our economy to remain competitive we must solve for the expected shortage of qualified workers in STEM fields, 3 million of them by 2020. For decades, as the pace of technological integration into economies accelerated at a breakneck pace, the education resources available to the majority of young learners has remained frustratingly stagnant. Few students are equipped with the experience, and most importantly, the confidence to complete a college major within a STEM field successfully. Academic success, and eventual professional success, is built on an early educational foundation. For technical skillsets related to computer science and math, a child’s confidence is made or broken by the time they reach middle school. Lifelong opinions on their ability to excel in technical fields are fundamentally linked to experiences and perceptions formed during elementary school. Antiquated representations of STEM fields, often men in lab coats doing boring, repetitious work, persist in today’s media and culture. The result has been a preconceived notion among young learners that being an engineer, mathematician, computer scientist, or even a doctor is not something they can or should achieve. The shortage of positive, STEM-related educational experiences at a young age has produced a generation of students who are choosing not to pursue those fields at all. Even those who choose to enter a STEM discipline will rarely be prepared for the challenges they encounter. Inclusion of girls as members of the STEM community is crucial to solving this flawed construct. Creating an environment where all kids, regardless of gender, can be inspired is vital to reversing the trend of STEM-phobia in American students. Intimidating drills, rote memorization, and outdated classroom technology were not designed for the needs of 21st century learners. Skills like conceptual problem solving and critical thinking will be as important as reading and writing in the workforce of the future, and are better taught through a hands-on, peer-based approach that integrates fun as an essential ingredient to learning. The sooner society learns to embrace teaching students not just how to use technology as a tool for learning math and reading, but also how to create technology itself, the sooner we will be providing them with a path for accelerated success. Companies like Zaniac, a K-8 enrichment program with a campus in South Miami, are leading the charge for a modernized education. A forward thinking approach allows students to grasp math and logic concepts, which are fundamental to computer programming, in a way that feels like play. Game-based learning utilizing Minecraft™ has completely rewritten the established paradigm of learning as work, and a modern pedagogy capitalizes on the love kids have for the game to teach concepts ranging from biology to physics. Modular robotics systems designed for education bridge the gap between theory and practice in engineering. The introduction of technology as a tool that students can both use and create at a young age further prepares them to comprehend the shifting dynamics of careers in their future. These young engineers, empowered, knowledgeable, and excited about technology and math, are not a hypothetical. They exist today at places like Zaniac. With the tide of the STEM conversation showing no signs of subsiding, these engineers will no doubt lead the way for countless more. Zaniac is located at 8322 S. Dixie Hwy, Miami, FL 33143. S I PILOT MY GLIDER OVER THE EVERGLADES THE SENSE of freedom, peace, and tranquility is indescribable. I associate those feelings with wellness. The opposite feeling of wellness has to be what one experiences before, during and after a nasty divorce (especially when kids are involved). The unpleasantness of constantly having to deal with someone that is looking to make your life harder can create daily gloom. The inability to fully remove yourself from a toxic situation creates high levels of stress. This is as common for men as it is for women. Regardless, out of the need for love and companionship, divorcees begin the task of taking better care of themselves with the hope of finding a new relationship. I can truly tell you that this is one area where a holistic approach to wellness really helps.

Miami-Dade county has the second highest divorce rate in the country. There are more than 500,000 divorcees out there. Women lead the men in that statistic. Being a single mom makes dating a logistical disaster. Furthermore, many women have suffered significant physical change from having children. This compounds the problem. So when date night arrives, out-come the Spanx, the girdles, and the latest Victoria’s Secret anti-gravity device. Stuffing the stigmata of bringing new life to the world in to a spandex mold. The superficiality of Miami creates an even higher hurdle. The boobs have to be just so, and don’t get me started on the butts. I’m starting to think that Kim K. would feel bottom deficient in this town. The “mommy makeover” is the general term for surgically improving the damage caused by having children. The deflated sagging breasts are improved by a breast augmentation, or breast lift. The abdomen can be helped by a bikini tummy tuck, with or without some curve defining liposculpture. Since I have a holistic approach to wellness, I like to incorporate my nutritional program into the mix. Older patients can benefit from bioidentical hormone replacement. Granted, safety is a huge concern for anyone having surgery. This is where you have to do your homework. Make sure you choose your plastic surgeon wisely. They should be board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. The surgical facility should be accredited by a reputable credentialing body such as AAAASF. From a psychological perspective I understand that true beauty comes from within. I am also realistic about the power of a positive self-image. I believe the feeling of once again belonging to the attractive group can truly help in this recovery period. So as you single moms do homework, science projects, take the kids to the orthodontist, or afterschool and weekend sports, take a minute to analyze your own wellness level. Ultimately you will be a much better parent if you feel great about yourself. An International, multilingual Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo brings to South Florida a refreshing, modern approach to Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Soler-Baillo earned his Medical Degree at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, trained in General Surgery at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and received extensive training in Plastic Surgery in Miami, New York, and Texas. RE ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLES PAINFUL FOR A PET? WILL a pet allow the insertion of needles into the skin? Does acupuncture really work? These are a few questions that veterinary doctors trained and certified in veterinary acupuncture get all the time. Even though it has been a staple of Eastern Medicine for thousands of years, it is in the last 20 years or so that acupuncture has become a mainstream modality in Veterinary Medicine. In fact, many veterinary schools today include in their curriculum introductory courses on the basics of veterinary acupuncture. Many general practitioners, board certified veterinary neurologists and anesthesiologist, are seeking the post doctoral Certification in Veterinary Acupuncture. Why? Because it works. Acupuncture refers to the insertion of thin metal needles into specific sites of the body, called acupuncture points, for the treatment or prevention of diseases and pain. Acupuncture also refers to other types of stimulation of these points, such as an injection of fluid (e.g. vitamin B12), electrical stimulation, light stimulation with low level laser, or local heating with a smoldering herb called “moxibustion.” But how does it work? Acupuncture induces changes in the function of the brain that lead to changes at the level of the endocrine, autonomic, and circulatory systems as well as at the mental-emotional level. Acupuncture works better for chronic problems by decreasing pain and inflammation, increasing energy levels, and reinforcing the action of the immune system. Acupuncture also provides important advantages to pets with cancer including pain reduction, elimination of nausea, and improved glandular function following radiation therapy. To determine if your pet is a good candidate for acupuncture therapy, a diagnosis is always the first step. This means that the doctor requires the same historical, physical and diagnostic information that is required for a conventional veterinary treatment. Aggressive pets are not candidates for acupuncture therapy. A typical trial period for acupuncture involves an “induction stage” of two to three treatments per week for at least two weeks. Since the effects of acupuncture are cumulative in nature, the benefits of the therapy will be short lived initially (one-to-two days), but will then accumulate, producing longer lasting effects. Once these longer lasting effects have been reached, the frequency of the sessions are tapered down to the minimum that will maintain the effects (“maintenance” stage). When looking for a veterinary acupuncturist, it’s important to remember that acupuncture is considered a medical procedure and, by law, only a licensed Veterinarian can provide the therapy. In addition, the doctor must have been awarded the postgraduate Certification in Veterinary Acupuncture by an institution recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Lastly, as with any other medical modality, the medical instrument is only as good as the trained hands using it. Seek a veterinary acupuncturist with many years of experience in acupuncture therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine for best results. Veterinary acupuncture is a safe, natural, and effective treatment alternative for pets with no adverse effects. When considering treatments for your ailing pet, you owe it to them to put acupuncture at the top of your list.

Let’s stop to consider our under-thanked blessings The most obvious often get all the attention: Our parents, our spouses, our children, our friendships, Our jobs and our earnings and our education. We tend to acknowledge what delights our fancy or that which arrests our hungering guile. I submit we might consider unearthing those fortunes that have been buried a-while. Begin with the dawn that every day greets us with hues that portend a burgeoning chance to start life all over with energized vigor, to take up the challenge to stand up and dance. Lest we take for granted automatic fortunes, let’s recognize once the good choices we’ve made: That time when we shunned a toxic temptation, when out of life’s lemons, we made lemonade. Let’s concentrate on the positive subtleties that daily have nourished our will to succeed, against every storm that has tried to capsize this life-faring vessel we skillfully lead.

Let’s stop to consider our imagination: that source of variety that colors our grey. Be grateful for having the chance to help others, how lending a hand has made someone’s day. Not all has been terrible in our earthly visit: We’ve surely made memories worth smiling about. Our health could be better, but at least we’re breathing, without wishful thinking we can do without.

Not everything worthy of appreciation, is palpably tangible or easy to see. Sometimes our good fortunes abscond in the shadows, not readily apparent to you and to me. Should We Add Fresh, Organic Human Food to our Dog’s Diet? BY TAMI MAIER
LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE
T
ODAY, 96 PERCENT OF DOG OWNERS AROUND THE GLOBE ARE FEEDING dry commercial dog foods. Of those 96 percent, there is a large majority that believes dried commercial dog food is really all their dog needs and would never stop to consider the benefits of adding fresh “human food”. Human food being organic protein meat source, and organic pet-safe fruits and vegetables. There are many reasons why some of these dog owners feel this way, however the most popular reason today seems to be the 50-year-old rumor that is in existence and still spreading. You know the one: “Giving your dog table scraps is bad!” How or when did this terrible rumor start? Well, if we go back in time, research shows that shortly after the invention of processed dog foods, manufacturers were having a hard time convincing dog owners to make the switch from foods in their refrigerators to their commercial dog foods. So in 1964, the pet food industry, along with the PFI, joined together with a whole bunch of marketing dollars and launched one of the most influential campaigns the pet world had ever seen: the “Ban All Table Scraps from your Pets’ Bowls” campaign. Through thousands of newspapers, magazines, and news stations, the public was warned about the dangers of table food scraps or “human food” and the importance of feeding “processed” commercial pet food. From there, the giant smear campaign took off!Not only did this clever campaign work, but it was so impactful that now, 50 years later, folks are still in fear of offering anything that is not labeled dog food. So the questions is… Is it wrong to give your dog table scraps? Not according to ongoing research it isn’t, especially with today’s cancer rates being one in two dogs! In a 2005 study conducted at Purdue University on Scottish Terriers, the results showed that adding fresh vegetables to dry commercial kibble actually prevented and/or slowed down the development of bladder cancer. In the study, dogs ate a diet of dry commercial pet food, while some got an assortment of vegetables added to the mix at least three times per week. When the study was concluded, according to the researchers, they weren’t really shocked by the results. Here’s what they found: Dogs that ate any green leafy vegetables, like broccoli, had reduced the risk of developing bladder cancer by 90 percent and the dogs that consumed any yellow – orange vegetables such as carrots reduced the risk by 70 percent. Seriously! A simple carrot helped smash the potential of cancer. However, because today’s world is ever-changing due to factory farmed livestock being fed genetically modified grains and our planet being contaminated with every type of pesticide, fungicide and larvicide, the importance of fresh, organic plant matter to help detox the body couldn’t be more crucial. And of course, all protein sources should be organic. So if the “cancer reducing benefit” does not convince you to add “human fresh foods” to your pet’s bowl, then maybe think of it this way: How bad would it be if someone forced you to eat dry processed foods your whole life? If you do not have the time to cook for your dog please check out the Lux Paws Booth at the Pinecrest Farmers Market every Sunday from 9am - 2pm and sample our Natural Dog Food and treats. And of course, with any change in your dog’s diet please consult with your veterinarian. Tami Maier, MS in Counseling Psychology, with current focus and certification on Aromatherapy for pets. Words of Wisdom on Divorce BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH
T
HE OTHER DAY I CAME ACROSS MY JOURNALS FROM when I was going through my divorce. It was a very sad, contentious, stressful and emotionally taxing time as evidenced by the words I read on those pages. I remembered some, but not all that I had written seven years before; funny how time has a way of erasing some of those painful moments. But in those journals I also found wisdom, which I want to share with you in the hope that it will help ease you down your path. From someone who has been there, done that, got the t-shirt and at times stayed for dinner, here goes. »» Divorce needs to be about healing, not just splitting assets. »» Write down your fears post-divorce and then their solutions. »» Work on being open to see other’s points of view, including your children’s. »» Use divorce to course correct the rest of your life. »» Being in the present moment was never more important than now. »» Don’t respond to things based on your fears or hurts. Be non-judgmental and don’t take things personally. »» Don’t be reactionary. Take a deep breath and look at the bigger picture before responding. »» Divorce is not black and white. »» If you write a story where all the blame goes on the other person, you are robbing yourself of tremendous growth. »» Divorce can become mindless if you let your ego take over. Stay in control. »» Make the most of the cards you were dealt. Don’t be hard on yourself.
»» »» »» »» »»
ALL of this is time limited. Find ways to lessen your daily load. Perfection is out the window. Do the things you enjoy. Happiness is something we ourselves generate, not our circumstances. Let go of things. Let go of mindsets or a belief system that no longer serves you. Let go of all the “shoulds” you have encountered in your life. Mother’s guilt is alive and well and living in your mind if you let it. Your children will always love you and this is not a competition. Stop worrying about what people have to say. They are not living your life. Your family structure has changed, so redefine it and stop struggling to keep it the same. It has changed, so change with it. And last but certainly not least is that there is hope for a newness that will light up your soul, that the sun will shine down on you again and you will feel it, that there is still love out there to experience and when you reach the other side of your divorce, you will be singing the Hallelujah chorus.

What is Hospice?
H
OSPICE IS A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM OF MEDICAL CARE AND SUPPORT for people nearing the end of life. The Hospice philosophy is based on several ideas: »» No one should die alone or in pain. »» Life-limiting illnesses can cause emotional and spiritual distress as well as physical pain, all of which deserve quality professional attention and compassionate care. »» A serious illness affects the entire family, not just the person who is ill. Those affected need and deserve ongoing support before and after a loved one’s death. Hospice provides pain management and appropriate palliative care, care that focuses on the patient’s comfort, when curative medical treatments no longer enhance quality of life. Hospice strives to meet the patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs and provides support for the entire family during the illness and for at least one year after a patient’s death. Most Hospice Care is provided at home, where people most want to be when they are ill. Hospice Care can also be provided in a nursing or residential facility and in certain circumstances, in a hospital or hospice management residence. Hospice Dr Ismael Roque-Velasco President and Chief Executive Officer also provides medications, medical Hospice Care of South Florida equipment and supplies necessary to promote comfort at home or in other Hospice settings. Hospice does not mean giving up hope. The focus shifts toward helping the patient achieve the maximum quality of life by focusing on their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
Hospice Care vs. Standard Medical Care Some differences between Hospice Care and Medical care are: »» Hospice looks at all of the patient’s and their family’s needs. A coordinated team of hospice professionals, assisted by volunteers, work to meet the patient’s and family’s emotional and spiritual needs, as well as the patient’s physical needs. »» An emphasis is put on controlling pain and symptoms through the most advanced techniques available as well as on emotional and spiritual support tailored to the needs of the patient and their family. »» Hospice recognizes that a serious illness affects not only affects the person who is ill, but the entire family as well. The family and patient is the “unit of care” for hospice professionals. At times, other family members may actually need more attention than the patient.
Who pays for Hospice care? Hospice palliative care is covered 100% by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, with no out-of-pocket costs to the patient or family. Costs covered related to the terminal illness, including the services of the Hospice team, medications, medical equipment and supplies. Contact Hospice Care of South florida to learn more on how they can you and your loved ones in your time of need.

Frank Istueta Founder & President Istueta Roofing
Wishing you peace of mind,
The best way to prevent "surprise" problems with your roof is to have it professionally inspected. So this month we're offering (10) NO-COST, NO-OBLIGATION Istueta Roof Quality Inspections™. Call today to secure the peace of mind you deserve.
Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Frank Istueta. I started Istueta Roofing in 1985 and for over 30 years we’ve had the honor of working with thousands of South Florida homeowners.
NOW HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS: You can prevent all of this future pain and heartache, dead in it’s tracks, RIGHT NOW.
By the time you see that you have a leak it’s already too late. Moisture has long been working around the clock quickly stripping years of life away from your roof and stealing your hard-earned money even faster, without you knowing it. Money you’d rather spend on a family vacation, a new car, your children(s) expensive college education, or perhaps that condo on the beach you’ve always dreamed of.
The bad news: Before you ever realize your roof is leaking, the damage has been done. Years of life have been ripped away from it and it’s going to cost you.
You've most likely never thought twice about it. “Out of sight, out of mind” as they say, right? That is until the moment you see a stain on your ceiling, or worse, have water leaking into your home.
Chances are you haven’t had a professional roofing contractor inspect or perform routine maintenance of your roof since it was installed. And that could be a BIG problem.
