NOTE FROM THE
EDITOR
As I prepared for our Spring Issue, I thought about all the things that Spring brings: great waves, amazing weather and a new beginning. If you’re like me, you are looking forward to spending some time outdoors and taking advantage of the great things our community has to offer. But the main reason I am amped about Spring is because of all the hard work that we have been putting into Fluid’s second issue. You never know what it takes to make something happen till you jump in head first. To put this creation together it takes lots of dedication and many sleepless nights from all of us. This issue is especially important to my team because we have big expectations for ourselves after the amazing response we got from the first issue. I want to thank all of the support from the community. As a Volusia native, it has been amazing to give something back to the community and start something that I can be proud of. The Fluid team is going to continue to work hard to exceed your expectations and consistently deliver you quality content. Lots of our readers have reached out to us and given us great feedback. We listened to you and in this issue you will see tons of high quality pics, great interviews and pretty ladies showing off the hottest spring bikinis. Thank you to the Fluid graphic design team, photographers, writers, stylist, our sponsors and the gorgeous models that make this possible. We love to hear from our readers, so please hit us up at thefluidmag.com

SURFARI WAVELENGTH January was a busy month for the Smyrna Surfari Club as they started 2012 with a flurry of activity. The monthly meeting on Jan. 5 was highlighted by the election of Co - Chairman. The Surfari Club structure features two officers called the Co-Chairmen, rather than a President and Vice – President. The idea is for the Co-Chairs to share the leadership duties equally and interchangeably, so that one can always be present if the other has to miss a meeting. They also are re-elected in alternating years so that an experienced Co-Chair is always in office. January saw Jeff Crawford step down as one Co-Chair and Mike Van Doren elected to take his place. All members expressed their gratitude to Jeff for his two years of dedicated service. The public cannot appreciate the amount of time and effort that officers like Jeff contribute to the many projects the Club undertakes each year on a strictly volunteer basis. During Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 12 – 14, many of the Surfari Club members attended the annual Surf Expo in Orlando. Surf Expo is a trade show where companies in the surf and beach market can display their products. Buyers for the thousands of retail surf shops can place their orders for the surfboards, clothing and accessories that will grace their shelves in the coming year. A Bi-Annual feature of Surf Expo is the induction of the latest class of nominees elected to the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame. New Smyrna Beach has two surfers enshrined in that body: Charley Baldwin, owner of CB Surfboards and Inlet Charley’s Surf Shop and Isabel McLaughlin, the 1974 US Women’s Surfing Champion. This year’s ceremony took place Friday night at the convention center. I made sure to attend that ceremony as three of the inductees, Tim Briers, Sean Slater and John Holeman all came to prominence when competing in the ASP and ASPEast events that I used to judge them in. Three of “My Boys!” I was especially stoked for John Holeman who has never received the credit he deserves for being a pioneer of aerial maneuvers all the way back in the Eighties. John was doing airs before Christian Fletcher! Annual Party: The Surfari Party took place Saturday, Jan.21 at the Clubhouse and was a huge success. Most members estimated it was the most well -attended ever. A good benchmark is that there were four kegs consumed, along with bushels of local oysters and the traditional Surfari Shrimp Boil, prepared by Robert Dobbelaar and Mike van Doren. New Smyrna Mayor Adam Barringer, who is a Surfari member, was in attendance and presented a plaque to outgoing Co-Chair Jeff Crawford in gratitude for his service. It read: “ In recognition of his tireless efforts in furtherance of the projects and goals of the Club”. The “Surfari Jam Band” led by Kem McNair and David Coffee were joined by Lois Ridgdill, Billy Chapin, Jim Bunn and friends to provide the excellent music for dancing. March Madness: March of 2012 will be one of the busiest ever on the agenda of the Club. The Kona Pro Surf Contest will take place Thursday, March 8 through Sunday, March 11 and the Surfari Club is an integral component. This year the Women’s division of the W.A.S.S. (Western Atlantic Surf Series) event will be titled “ The Surfari Club Women’s Pro” and the Club has contributed $2500 as the prize purse for the winners. Last year’s champion was Lindsey Baldwin, of New Smyrna Beach, and she will once again be competing against fellow local standout Amy Nicholl. Surfari Club volunteers will be on the beach Tuesday and Wednesday, the 6th and 7th to help set up the event site. The Club will have a tent onsite every day where the public can learn about Club activities. On Saturday, March 10 the Club members will organize and judge the ever-popular “Tadpole” event, for the surfers 10 yrs and under who are pushed into the waves by their parents. Every contestant will receive a commemorative medallion for participating. Monday, March 12 the Club members will be back on the beach to tear down and clean up the contest site. Balloon Fest, March 23 – 25: The 4th Annual NSB Balloon Fest will be held at the airport and usually attracts the largest crowds of visitors that the City sees all year, with estimates as high as 25,000 people. This year the Smyrna Surfari Club has volunteered to help coordinate the visitor parking and will have as many as twenty members at a time rotating in shifts to help the event run smoothly. In exchange for their service, the Surfari Club will receive a percentage of the gate proceeds. This project is being spear-headed by Club members Robert Dobbelaar and Jeff Crawford. Garage Sale: April 28: Club members will purge their garages and closets of too-small wetsuits and too-brown surfboards and donate them for sale to the public at the Clubhouse on Saturday, April 28. All proceeds will go to the Surfari Scholarship program. Altogether, the first quarter of 2012 will be the most ambitious that the Surfari Club has ever undertaken, and the Seaside Fiesta Contest won’t be long after that! But, hey…we love it, and all the money goes to scholarships. Mike Martin Co-Chair, 2011-12 For the Smyrna Surfari Club.

HAS WORK EVER TRIED TO DRAW YOU AWAY? Sometimes, for sure, but I’m happy with the amount of work I get here. I guess that could change, but right now it hasn’t been enough to pick up a family of five and start new somewhere else. SPEAKING OF FAMILY DIDN’T YOU JUST HAVE ANOTHER KID? Yeah, I have 2 daughters and just had my first boy! THAT’S REALLY COOL, HOW DOES YOUR FAMILY INFLUENCE YOU AND YOUR WORK? Oh man, huge. It’s a balance for sure, but I have an awesome wife, Emily, who’s very understanding and respectful and that goes both ways. I respect them and I include them in what I do, because photography’s not just my job, it’s also who I am as a person.

The Sebastian Inlet Crew for years has produced so many heavy hitters. Who are the guys you looked up to growing up?
Speir, Phil, Rino & the list goes on and on. I learned my approach to the wave (Sebastian inlet) watching Phillip and Speir. I tried to copy what they’ve done for so many years. Growing up with all those guys, what was the vibe like? Lots of heckling, beatings from older guys, or some support?
The beatings came from my brother. As far as surfing with all those guys, they’ve always tried to point me in the right direction. Obviously when you’re a grom, you’re not going to paddle out at first peak and think you’re going to get waves. It was cool to be able to sit out there and get scraps from them, and as the years went on, they eventually started telling me to go on good ones. It’s cool to watch the progression of sitting way inside, to sitting out the back trading waves with them. Who helped you get your foot in the door with sponsors?
My dad was a big influence on everything I do, as well as my brother. As far as my first major sponsor, Scott Bouchard took me under his wing and hooked me up with Hurley. Scott is really close with my family and that helped get me started .
19 THEFLUIDMAG.COM
I had my mom sewing stuff to make sure they would fit. After riding for Hurley, Volcom picked me up and it’s been awesome. I think I am on my ninth year riding for them and they are like family! Who got you on Volcom?
My dad, my brother, and I had a meeting at a surf expo with Troy Eckert, Brad Dougherty, and Richard Woolcott. It was a January expo and I started riding for Volcom soon after. Daniel Terry(East Coast Marketing) was a huge reason Volcom picked me up and has been a huge supporter throughout my career. Not to mention the guy works harder than anyone I know. All Volcom events, contests, or promotions you’ve been to on the East Coast and Puerto Rico that has been off the charts, you can thank Daniel Terry! What’s your relationship with longtime sponsor Volcom been like lately?
As far as a company goes, those guys are the most unreal people!! The Surf industry is brutal and they’ve been nothing but good people to me and my family. There support crew at Volcom is like a family vibe, you can’t even call it like it’s a company. You see everyone and it’s all hugs and not even hand shakes.
Best Advice a friend or family member has given you that you took to heart?
I have recieved so much good advice from so many people that have been in so many different situations in life. It’s a combination of everything. From friends that don’t even surf, to my buddies who surf, and my family members, I just take it all in and make a positive out of anything. Who would you call your tight group of friends? Guys you ball with or hit the links with?
I hang out with Phillip a lot. My Brother is my best friend. I have a lot of friends that don’t surf, that I grew up with and went to school with. I have a tight group of friends that I chill with and have a couple beers or play basketball with. Phillip and my brother motivated me to surf. Even kids like Luke Marks calling me everyday to surf. My girlfriend and family are who I hang out with the most. We are all really close. My family for sure are my best friends. How much has your family influenced you? Tell us some history about the Jones’s.
My Dad is originally from South Carolina, they moved down here a long time ago. My dad worked at Jeff Crawford’s surf shop he had back in the day down by Sebastian Inlet. My parents met and the rest is all history. Hahaha Now we are all surfing..well my Mom doesn’t surf, but me with my dad and brother more than anyone.
You had a successful run on the contest series for 2011, seemed like you had a solid year? {*nothing less than a quarterfinal result}
PHOTO: JIMMICANE
It wasn’t on the WQS(world qualifying series), the contests I focused on were all on a tour known as the Western Atlantic Surf Series, which has grown over the years. For me to do those contests against people I’ve looked up to like Ben, Asher, Jeremy, Gorkin and guys coming up like Dunphy, your competing with guys you’ve grown up with in your back yard. To be doing as well as I’ve done on that tour, it motivates me to keep my focus on those contests. Mike Bloom puts on a really good contest, gets the right sponsors, with great staff and good judges, and the parties are good too!! The Western Atlantic Surf Series has continued to grow and the East Coast has needed this for years. I feel it is really relevant for East Coasters and the stops on the tour are unreal. I mean Soupbowls, Barbados in November! It’s fun winning or losing. What is the Blake Jones method of traininG to stay in shape?
“Nothin

good
My training method is basically staying in the water as much as possible. I feel like that is the best way to train. I like to play basketball to stay in shape. I use to train with a trainer, it felt good, but nothing can compare to surfing a lot. I run here and there, but basketball is better. I feel like I put too much pressure on myself when I was training hard. I’ve had better results just keeping my focus on surfing.

best trip of your life?
There are a couple that stick out in my mind. It’s hard to pick just one. There was this one, Adam Wickwire and I got the call to go on a boat trip with Tom Carey (photographer) and Shooster (filmer). The crew was unreal that we had on that trip. It was Wickwire, Alejandro Moreda, Mitch Colburn, Dusty Payne, Dylan Graves, and Granger Larsen. The boat was called the Nusantara owned by Adam Kranz from South Florida. The captain and crew are legends on that boat! The first day we got Lances really good and the rest of the trip was flat. All the way to Indo we got skunked. It was like a having cruise in Indo. We would just drink and watch movies for 8 days straight pretty much, we barely surfed. It was classic being shoved on a boat with that crew and no waves. Another trip that was awesome, Australia and Tasmania with C.J, Damien, Gabe Kling, and Brain Toth. It was great to be on a trip with guys who I’ve looked up to all my life. We really didn’t get the best waves on that trip either, but it’s all about the crew you’re with. Getting fun waves is just a plus when you have the right crew!!!! Another memorable trip was the #teamgivingithell trip in California. We packed up Jimmy Wilson’s car at 5 a.m. one morning, because we knew the swell was coming and said, screw it let’s hit the road. Ended up surfing some great waves, hanging with great people, and having some damn good times.
that is on iTunes, Rise and Shine, that kid is gnarly. He is eating it on huge rails, you can drown surfing or break something, but those guys risk breaking something or cracking their skull on every trick. It is crazy how they eat it then go after it again. If I eat sh#t surfing, I sit there for a few minutes and contemplate things for a little. Hahahaha Like I said, I love skateboarding, but in 2009 I fractured both elbows skateboarding in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. I came down hands out, and needless to say, I don’t skateboard now. What are the Golf Courses in your area to play…Budget style and baller courses?
If we are in a rush and want to play somewhere kind of cheap, we play Aquarian for a quick 18. For baller courses, Duran is a nice course, and luckily Philip’s dad works at PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, so we’ve played there a couple times. I’ve been fortunate to play TPC Sawgrass because Volcom hooked it up!! I haven’t been playing as much as I would like to. I want to get lessons. Alright, lets get to really know you..Don’t hold out! When was the last time you partied so hard that you were like, what the hell happened last night?
other favorite board sport?
I love skateboarding, but don’t anymore because I got hurt. I can’t afford to get hurt with surfing as my career. When I was little I actually skateboarded more than I surfed. Watching how consistent pro skaters are is pretty nuts. I don’t know if you saw that Nyjah Houston Video
21 THEFLUIDMAG.COM
Kyle Garson’s wedding. That one was bad the next day, really hungover. I was hurting for two days later. I don’t know if I am getting old or what. It was a good time, it was two unbelievable people, whom I’ve known forever, celebrating their wedding. It was like my own wedding. I had so much fun!!
What do you love about Central Fl?
It’s home, has some of the most unique people in the world, and you never know what your going to get. Best Local band in your Area?
Le Blorr Band is really successful and cool. I actually listen to rap more than anything, so for local guys I would have to say Iceberg Tony. He is a rapper from Melbourne. Best Places to eat?
CafE Coconut Cove is the night spot. I would say for a lunch spot Doubles. Best place to go out with the boys?
For football, Bunky Bar, and if you want to have day time beers in the summer, Sands on the Beach. My friend opened a bar in downtown Melbourne, Debauchy, which is a good place to go. If you want to go real big, go up to Cocoa Beach. Any last words or SHOUT-OUTS?
There are so many people to thank. I’ve been so fortunate to have so many close friends helping me over the years. My family, girlfriend, all my friends, and the Volcom family. Thanks to Billy Hume and Daniel Terry for making Volcom East Coast what it is. Shaddy and all the boys at Electric and Thomas from Kicker. Fluid Mag for doing this interview most of all! Without the support of my sponsors, I wouldn’t be were I am in my career. Go Magic!!! Go Dolphins!!!

We have dodged a lot of cold weather and harsh winds, this factored with clear waters, has made sight fishing unbelievable for this time of year. Moving into March and April means that the water will rise and the fish will begin to move up onto the flats, rather than the drop offs and deeper water. According to Scott Laney, mahi-mahi have started to bite since the middle of February, which is really early, but not surprising due to warmer winter climates. Some boats have even been catching wahoos. In March and April, most charter boat captains will be targeting mahi-mahi, as well as amberjack, trigger fish, and mangrove snapper. THE SHORES FESTHOUSE BY BRAD MILLER Located in little Daytona Beach Shores, The Shores Festhaus is a pub for all to enjoy. “The Festhaus” is a surf themed restaurant/bar that has a neighborhood charm. It has a locals crowd that keep the beer flowing, but first timers are always welcomed with friendliness and helpful suggestions from just about everyone. As a customer you certainly feel like part of the family. With a selection of over 125 imported and craft beers, “The Festhaus” is a must for all beer lovers. And the sandwich menu is something that cannot be ignored. Sandwiches stacked high, subs, pretzels, and more can all be enjoyed here. The Shores Festhaus has a long history in the Daytona Beach area. The Shores Festhaus is a smaller version of the former Bernkastel Festhaus. If you had an opportunity to enjoy what Bernkastel had to offer, you remember how legendary it was. Located on Daytona Beach boardwalk, under what is now the Hilton hotel, Bernkastel Festhaus was started by Glen Teschner. Many yard glasses, das boots, steins, liters, and pints of beer were poured during the period of 1989-2005. A great atmosphere by the beach to enjoy a sandwich and have an ice cold beverage while checking the waves. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end. Bernkastel shut its doors in the summer of 2005. Two years had passed, and Festhaus lovers from all over were wanting more. In 2007, Glen, his wife Melissa, and family granted the calls for a new beginning. The Shores Festhaus was born and has been pumping out great sandwiches, and of course, great beers every day since. The local favorite sandwich choice is the Cajun Dutchman. It consists of roast beef, ham, bacon, smoked gouda cheese, and a homemade cajun spread for a little kick. The Dutchman is best served on pumpernickle toast. The menu is full of many great sandwiches including the traditional Reuben on rye, Roast Beef Ajus, and the towering King Ludwig’s Kastel. As for beer choices, good luck just trying one. The local favorite is the German Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest. It is a sweet marzen style that goes down smooth, especially coupled with one of the tasty sandwiches. Other beers offered are IPAs, weiss beers, ciders, stouts, porters, pale ales, and lagers from all around the world. It is impossible to not find a beer to enjoy.
SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? HEAD ON INTO THE SHORES FESTHAUS, WHERE GLEN, MELISSA, AND MANAGERS BRAD AND JEFF WILL GET YOU SET WITH A GOOD BEER AND A GREAT TASTING SANDWICH. CHEERS! 31 THEFLUIDMAG.COM

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH PERFORMANCE ART?
I’ve done it at parties for my entire career - over 25 years. I used to do characters and portraits. What really made the light bulb go off in my head was when I was offered a job as a performance artist at Universal Studios in Osaka, Japan. It was three 20 minute shows a day - it was an awesome gig. The money wasn’t good enough to go back and forth from Japan and Daytona. Around that time, I started getting lots of calls for performance art so I started shifting my focus in that direction. DO YOU HAVE A ROUTINE OR GAME PLAN WHEN YOU PERFORM?
Usually I custom design my art to fit the party. There are a few of my paintings that I have recreated before, but for the most part, everything is one of a kind art. I do not rehearse, I just figure out what I want to do first and sometimes I just make it up as a I go along. I am very thankful for the ability to do that because a lot of performance artists must have everything rehearsed or they are unable to paint live. There is a lot to take into consideration - the jobs, the clients, whether they want to keep the painting or if I am selling it. There is a lot of preparation involved. WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE REACTION THAT YOU HAVE GOTTEN FROM A PERFORMANCE?
There are so many different ones. Just today I was pumping gas and some guy started talking to me about one of my shows that he went to. He talked to me in detail about the show and what he thought about it. I feel so lucky that I go out and people share with me how much my art means to them. The feedback and appreciation really keeps me going. WHAT OR WHO INSPIRES YOU?
Everyone inspires me - the whole world. I design my entire career after Jesus. After what he did and the message he brought. The message he brought was simple - love God and love your brothers (each other). THEFLUIDMAG .COM 38

FLUID MUSIC
When asked to interview the pop funk band, Beebs and Her Money Makers for the Fluid sounds page, I didn’t really know what to expect.. I just assumed it’d be like any other interview, ask questions, get some answers, share some laughs, you know, the usual. What I got was totally different. Piled in my friend’s one-bedroom condo off Florida St. in New Smyrna, the short gathering / interview turned into a total party, with voice recorders capturing every last detail of how this band became full on super heros and what’s next to come on their quest toward world domination...
What type of music do you’ll make?
We make dance music, you know, and positive music with a positive message to just bring to the masses, so people can just have a good time, and you know, feel good when they leave. That’s pretty real. What would say influences you guys?
Everything, all of us bring in so many influences. And normally that doesn’t work, but we all kinda melted together and it just turned into something good. I’d say the biggest influence is our fans, they’re super awesome, they support us really hardcore, and we’re just really grateful for that, because we wouldn’t be able to do what we do for a living without them. What do you think about the Orlando music scene?
it’s enough to where it keeps people occupied, and lets every buddy breath a little bit. There’s not any pressure, you know? It’s all good right now. You mentioned good teachers, what do you think about Full Sail University?
By Patrick Ruddy
Where is this all going?
We wanna have a TV show, and a kid show, and maybe will be on Nick Jr, {Laughs} We’re gonna take the Wiggles place. We wanna indoctrinate the young, that’s how were gonna take over the world.
It’s a great resource for the local music scene. Full Sail’s been love it, sounds like you guys are on your growing a lot in the past few years, and they keep adding on. It’s also a great way to get help as a band, we actually shot part way. Tell us something funny, something of our music video there. embarrassing, that’s happened recently. We were playing with Zach Depot in Daytona and our friend Nice. So tell us something about Beebs, Whitney Davis, she has a hot sauce company, (“I remember this” is there anything you want Fluid readers - gets yelled out from the back of the room) and so while we were to know? playing, Beebs sticks her leg out to rip her fart on fire, and it’s such Well, we’re all super heroes! a big flame that it catches her costume on fire, and all I see is a big Wait! What? Super heroEs? poof, and it melts her stockings away, then she turns around and {Laughs} Yeah, the premise of the band is that we’re all goes, “Man, that was some hot sauce!” {Laughs} super heroes, and so there’s a whole mythology behind each character and the entire band. Classic. You guys are good times. Any
It’s good, man, there’s a lot of good music out right now. There’s also a lot of really good teachers right now that are pumping out some great students who are making some amazing bands. So you have the people who just play and feel it, and you have the school people, and it’s all starting to So do you have a comic book? melt together, and all these bands are happening, and there’s Yeah, were actually have a comic book coming out in a just more music then there’s ever been. You know? And I think there’s always been good bands, but as soon as a band breaks month or two. up their scene dies, but now there’s all these bands playing and
last shoutouts?
Shout out to Sector 9, and Sanuk for supporting us and being super cool, OBP (Orange Blossom Pilsner), and anyone who’s helping us along the way in achieving the ultimate goal in total world positive domination.
