This past December, when I was waiting for our first issue to finish printing, I made the call to see if our new creation was ready for the world to see. The printers told me it will be ready for pickup up after lunch. I guess it looks like I have the green light to go catch a couple of waves before the pickup. I paddled out and started off having a shocker of a session. Nothing came to me, people were catching waves all around me and I was freaking out. I tried to stay calm but every wave I caught was horrible, so I proceeded to paddle out about 100 yards past everyone. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m out there for about 15 minutes and nothing came my way. Just as I am about to paddle toward the beach in defeat, a random little peak came to me. The wave wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t great on the outside, but right as I made it to the inside section, the wave came together beautifully for a perfect barrel to end my session. I could see the lip over my head the entire time and thought there was no way I am going to make it, but surprisingly I did. Similar to that surprising wave that day, this magazine amazes me on a daily basis. You never know how things are going to turnout in life until you just dive in head first. There are so many ups and downs with creating Fluid Magazine, but for every negative thing that comes our way, there are plenty of positives to keep us going. The hardest aspect is trying to work out all the kinks of being the new guys around. It is crazy how much goes into producing this publication. It is a nonstop monster, that constantly needs to be fed. What really keeps us going is our growth as a new company. Businesses and brands see that we are young and creative and have taken notice. The most gratifying experience of all is the reaction of our readers and the huge turnouts at our Fluid Parties. Regardless of all the surprises and barriers, we will continue to push our level of creativity and quality each issue. EDITOR | BRYAN

Aaron “Gorkin” Cormican

Ever since Aaron started surfing and skateboarding as a young grom he has been progressive. His purple dyed hair at the tender age of 10 and that freckled sunburned face mixed with days at the beach landed him a role as one of the most progressive surfers ever to date. Guys like Jordy Smith and Dane Reynolds grew up watching Gorkin segments in videos giving them an inspiration for where they are now. Aaron comes from a good blood line of surfing parents. Dale Cormican, his dad, was a three time East Coast champion and Zetta, Aaron’s mom, surfs well and was a staple at the New Smyrna Inlet for years. The competitive side of Aaron is fierce! He thrives on the build up to an event and then takes action with his array of tricks that are so impressive that he can take his free surf form and go install that into his competition mode to be very successful. Speaking of, he has the most professional east coast wins of any pro surfer from anywhere. For the masses that do not know Aaron, he is a warm and very respectful person. Progression is what Aaron is and will continue to do with his surfing. He is one of the most radical surfers in the world and has a blast living his life. After watching his good friend Kolohe Andino qualify last year, Evan has been fueled by that fire and desire to make the World Stage of competition. His surfing speaks for itself in all conditions and his persona is class act. Evan has all the technique and tools to be a top 5 surfer if not better, and he is progressing with every session. The moves and approach that Evan does are like a dancer with grace and precision. Evan is progression and will continue to raise the bar for the new school of talent. Boosting higher, blowing more tail, and making combos that are three and four moves per ride. Look for Evan to possibly qualify this year on the WCT and take his wicked air game to the big show. -TUPAT

What canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Eric do? He is progressive with musical instruments, surfboards, skateboards and anything else he tries for that matter. Eric placed second in a 6 Star and has produced many sick surf segments. At the amateur level, he was stellar winning numerous National and East Coast titles. He also won the Jr. Pro division before turning pro. Whether Eric plays the field of the world tour or continues to film and make incredible segments, he will keep the progressive side of our sport pushed to the limits. -TUPAT

Nils

Hands down the nicest guy on this list. Don’t let his laid back demeanor fool you. Nils is a straight up competitor who can boost massive airs and charges like an absolute madman. Whether it is huge Mexico or Pipeline contest, Nils leaves a lasting impression. He has really started to make a name for himself the last few winters in Hawaii with results like a quarter final birth at Pipeline in the Volcom pro. If Nils isn’t globe trotting, you can find him hanging with his little brother Noah and the NBK crew. -Bryan

Oliver is the most progressive goofy footer that surfs Sebastian. He utilizes the wedgy peaks to his advantage by boosting tail first over any and every section. He has been burned at Pipeline only to return this year to show that he is more than a one trick pony. Hurley took notice a few years back, thanks to mentor and fellow goofy footer Asher Nolan. Oliver continues to improve every aspect of his surfing and throws some of the most progressive maneuvers in any size surf. -Gordon Lawson

Good for the sport of Surfing. Heilman is always one of the most humble pro surfers you will ever meet. Jesse will go out of his way to be nice to everyone and you’ll be hard pressed to hear anyone talk trash about him. In the water, he is super accurate when it comes to sticking huge airs!! Jesse has a silky smooth style and is constantly pushing the limits above the lip and is more than deserved to be part of this elite list. -Bryan Forand

Eddie comes from a deep lineage of surfing talent from Melbourne Beach. Uncle Johnny Futch ran first peak for years with surf travel partner Charlie Kuhn. Eddie’s mother, Jan Futch, was one of the original wahines from central Florida. Eddie has many amateur titles under his belt as well as being recently crowned King of the Peak. With a huge bag of tricks up his sleeve, Eddie has only shown us a glimpse of his surfing potential. -Gordon Lawson

”Frother” is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Jerm. Whether it’s on a surf trip or dominating heats, Johnston is always amped up and is the ultimate contest machine. Jeremy and his younger brother Caleb were bred from a young age to be great surfers. From vert fin free hits to huge 360 airs, Jeremy is a standout at any break around the world. Hopper is one of the most stylist tube riders around, which was quoted by his late friend Andy Irons. He surfs incredible from 2 foot to 20 foot and sometimes bigger. He has the air game as well. Hopper may have never had a Pro ratings career, but never the less he made the NSSA National team two years in a row and represented our Country in Australia. He introduced his private spot in Mexico to two other balls to the wall surfers, which include Todd Morcom and Nils Schweizer. Hopper along with a few underground guys, started doing a technique called Step-Offs, which has enabled them to get deeper and longer tubes while capturing all of this on film. Step-offs are becoming more and more progressive. For the past 20 years Hopper has produced clips from all over, proving that he is a legit progressive surfer. -TUPAT

Lindsay almost made the tour a few years back but just came up short in Hawaii. Her passion for surfing runs deep in her blood with, local legend, Charlie Baldwin as her father. He has paved the road for New Smyrna surfing dating back to his competitive days and had one of the most progressive surf teams for its time. Lindsay recently won the girls Kona Pro in her hometown of New Smyrna Beach. I watched her surf all the way through, and she was riding those waves as good as you could for the wild conditions the surfers endured. Lindsay has a powerful approach and will continue to progress with more and more surf sessions. -TUPAT

This is really cool to write about Noah because it just seems like yesterday that Noah was playing in the tide pool out front of our Bethune Beach home. But now he is driving to the inlet and throwing down 360 air’s every wave with fineness and speed. Noah still has plenty of time to get more power and that will come with weight and time, but he is already on a mission to land more and more technical airs. Mayday Event By: Haley Watson

There’s really not much I can say, besides I love my mom so much, Dollie Sue Watson. She was so much more than my mom, she was my best friend. She always put others in front of herself, and would drop anything she was doing just to help someone if they were in need. She passed away of heart disease on December 29th, 2006, when she suddenly fell victim of cardiac arrest. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women worldwide, much too often without the signs or symptoms that men often experience. That is why I decided to host this event in memory of her to raise awareness of heart disease. I wanted to keep her outgoing, amazing spirit alive. I also wanted to do everything I could to make sure no other child, or person, ever has to go through losing their most loved ones unexpectedly like I did. That’s why I decided to use the proceeds from last years contest to start my own non profit charity, the MayDay Memorial Foundation. I am working with Florida Hospital Flagler to be able to provide free screening to detect heart disease to uninsured and low incoming people in our community. At 20 years old, I am currently the youngest member serving on Florida Hospital Flagler Women’s Health Council, where we often host outreaches to raise awareness of women’s health. Since the organization was founded, I was also nominated and accepted into the National Association of Professional Women. The MayDay Memorial Surf Classic is so much fun for me to organize and put on because of my competitive surfing background, however it is kind of difficult for me since it is a constant reminder that the whole reason I am doing this is because my mom is not here. All I care about is keeping her incredible, one of a kind spirit alive, and just to try my hardest to make her proud.

FLUID. You guys are on the road a lot traveling. Do you get tired of it? You do get tired of traveling, but it’s always great to go to new places and cities and see different parts of the country and their different cultures!

FLUID. What would be your dream tour to be on? A dream tour for us would be to be on the road sharing the stage with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers or any big rock act.

FLUID. What is the next step for Orange Avenue? The next step is a summer tour covering the entire US!!!! Also to continue to connect with old and new fans giving them content through our social media outlets like facebook and twitter.

FLUID. Your third studio album “Small Victories” just came out at the end of February and has had a great reception. How does it make you feel? If feels great to have the new record out! It was an enormous amount of work that went into it, and all of us gave it our all. It’s great to know that people are enjoying it and we are gaining new fans! It’s a humbling experience and it also feels rewarding. It’s always a great feeling when people like what you do! FLUID. What was different about the recording process this time as opposed to the last 2 times you have recorded? The difference this time then from previous albums was a few factors. Our producer and production team we had for this process was great! We all worked together on “RESET” (previous EP that came out in 2009) and a few different singles here and there, so the working relationship on how we all operate wasn’t foreign. With us knowing that, we all wanted to expand on where the band was going with “RESET” and also take some chances on sounds and production. Don’t get me wrong, like with anything there were many obstacles we had to endure during the process that wasn’t too much fun like i.e., having to move to different studio’s throughout the course of pre-production, tracking, and mixing,

FLUID. How does it feel to be from a small beach town of Daytona Beach, FL and to be making so many fans throughout the world? It feels great! Its always great to meet new people and see what they’re up to. You learn so much! FLUID. Over the last 2 years you guys have really taken off. What have you done differently that has helped to get your guys so much attention in the industry? A lot of that comes from our management, Mike Cathey and Joseph Pineda. These guys are the hardest working people I know and don’t ever stop. Their great guys and were grateful for them! FLUID. Do you have any advice for other indie bands starting out? The best advice I would give is, be very active in the social media world, play as much as you can where you can, and always be humble and grateful for what you may or may not have accomplished. FLUID. The album is called “Small Victories”. What is the meaning behind that? There were and are many obstacles we had to overcome and deal with. Not only through the recording process but every day.

FLUID. What is the hardest thing about being an indie artist? What is the best? The hardest thing about being an indie artists is not having the budgets, contacts, and different distribution outlets that major labels can offer or help with. The best thing about being an indie artist is being able to stay true to your music and who you are as an artist. FLUID. Which artist bands inspire you guys? Who do you guys look up to? Why? Sean: Tons of bands and artists inspire me. My answer is so broad because every artist(s) is not the same. Each person or persons have something special and a/an unique way about them that not only identifies them, but makes them who they are. Being a drummer, all drummers can play a 4/4 beat, but its how you play that 4/4 beat that makes you who you are. Here are just a few of the bands and artists I admire; Red Hot Chili Peppers, Muse, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Coldplay. Artists: Chad Smith, Travis Barker, Atom Willard, Mike Johnston, Eric Kretz. FLUID. What’s the craziest thing you guys have encountered at a show/on tour? We have had countless crazy things happen to us on tour. Several top the list. While playing in NYC a band member (not mentioning any names) accidentally walked into the wrong apartment. That was a wild moment due to the person living in the apartment that was walked in on. Another one would be during Spring Break in the Keys having the stage taken over by Spring Breakers. Its one of those moments where you don’t know what to do, so you just go with it and continue the show.

SURFARI WAVELENGTH SCHOLARSHIP TIME: The most important annual event on the Surfari Club calendar will take place on Thursday, May 31 at the auditorium of New Smyrna Beach High School. That evening, three graduating seniors will receive college scholarships awarded by the Club as outstanding Surfer/Scholars from the Class of 2012. The public usually sees the Surfari Club in action on the beach, cleaning it up or running surf contests but for one night the Club representatives will dress up and pass out checks totaling $6000. Three different students will receive scholarships. The first is called the “Surfari Spirit Award” and is a $1000 scholarship dedicated to the memory of Club members who have been deceased during the past year. This year’s “Surfari Spirit” honors the memory of our Co-Chairman Mike Van Doren, who suffered a fatal heart attack on February 12, and died at the age of 61, as well as Frederick “Fico” Fernandez, a mathematics teacher at NSB High School who was lost in a surfing accident last August. The second scholarship is the “Wayne Peck Memorial” in honor of a past Club Treasurer who passed away several years ago. It awards $2000 in tuition and expenses. Finally, the “Smyrna Surfari Club Scholarship” will award the winner $3000. This was the original scholarship established by the Club the year after its founding in 1980. “Our annual scholarships are the “raison d’etre” of the Surfari Club”, said Scholarship Chairman Tom Wright. “All our fundraising efforts, including our surfboard raffles and contests, go toward those funds. Since 1980 the Surfari Club has awarded more than forty graduating surfers with over $100,000 in college scholarships”. At the monthly Club meeting on April 5 the members scrutinized this year’s applications, using the long-established “Mike Clancy Matrix”, which rates the candidates in three criteria of surfing ability, scholarship and financial need. After a spirited discussion, the three recipients were chosen and the Surfari members were once again sworn to secrecy not to reveal the names. Those three students will be revealed at the Awards Night. BEACH CLEAN-UP ON CINCO DE MAYO: The Surfari Club’s second Beach Clean-Up of 2012 will take place on May 5, announced Committee Chairman Gordon Smith. “The 5th has an out going tide in the morning, low at 12:50 pm, and May is good because more members will still be in town before summer break”. Four times a year the Surfari Club volunteers clean up their two adopted sections of the beach: from the Flagler Avenue Boardwalk north to Sapphire Road, and one mile from the Inlet jetty south to the condos. This year’s coincidence with Cinco De Mayo will no doubt see many beach cleaners adjourn to Clancy’ Cantina afterward for a de-briefing from Mr. Smith. BALLOON AND SKYFEST GREAT SUCCESS: The fourth annual NSB Balloon and Skyfest took place at the airport from March 23-25 and the Smyrna Surfari Club was a major participant. After being asked to help coordinate this huge event the Club helped organize several other community groups, like the Christian Surfers, to direct the visitor parking. Although windy weather prevented many balloons from flying, the Skyfest was deemed to have been a great success, with more than 37,000 people estimated to have attended. Twenty-five members of the Club turned out to help over the course of four days, including a final clean-up of the airport grounds on Tuesday, March 27. (We love to clean-up). The unquestioned “Iron Man’ of the week was Surfari Co-Chairman Jeff Crawford who put in days that stretched from 5:30 AM until 10 at night. Well done Jeff! As a reward, the City of New Smyrna and the Skyfest organizers divided a percentage of the $2 parking fees amongst the volunteer groups. At the City Commission meeting of April 10, NSB Mayor Adam Barringer and Skyfest Chairman Arlen Stauffer presented the Surfari Club with a check for $3, 674. There’s one scholarship covered already! Although it was a departure from our usual projects, which take place on the beach, the Club volunteers agreed that the Balloon and Skyfest was an opportunity to interact with the non-surfing public as well as raise valuable funds. GARAGE SALE AND TADPOLES POSTPONED: The Surfari Club Garage Sale, tentatively scheduled for April 28, has been postponed until a future date this year, which has yet to be decided. At that time the Club members will bring out their too-small wetsuits and too-brown surfboards for a public sale to raise scholarship funds. The Club will announce the rescheduled date after their meeting on May 3rd. TOO STORMY FOR TADPOLES: The 2012 Kona Pro Contest, featuring the Surfari Women’s Pro took place in stormy and challenging conditions on March 8-11. Very high tides forced all vehicles off the beach for part of each day, and the gale-force winds blew down and shredded the Surfari Club sales tent. On Saturday, March 10 everyone agreed that it was too dangerous to send out the 10-and-Under surfers for their “Tadpole” event, and none of their parents wanted to wade out either! It was decided to reschedule another Tadpole event for a future date in the summer.
