NOTE FROM THE

EDITOR

All the roads we travel, the horizon beckons. There are endless options and the open roads are infinite, it is the true forbidden fruit. Each journey I take, I savor the memory, absorb the culture, and take in the experience. Although generally pleased, I always come home wanting more. I was introduced to traveling from a very young age. My parents sailed the world prior to my existence, but they’ve continued to have the travel bug all my life. When I was a kid my dad had an airplane and both of my folks and my grandfather were all pilots, so we got around a lot. I will never forget the day when I realized it was time for me to go on a surf trip. I was living close to the inlet in New Smyrna and would always skateboard up to the boardwalk to check the waves. One day I was up there and a neighbor named LeeBo, from down the street, came up to check the surf. He was older than me and all of my hoodlum buddies, and we looked up to him because the

guy ripped back then, and still does to this day. I will never forget it, he just got back from scoring somewhere out of the country (guy is like a swell forecaster practically), probably a few beers deep, and just gave me the talk. It went something like this, “look B, don’t get caught up in all the bullsh*t, you’re a good kid. Save your money, get on a plane, and go to Central America. Don’t stop after that either, after you get back from that trip, start planning another one immediately!” I have no idea why he has been so nice to me and the boys our entire life, but I can’t thank LeeBo and the older generation enough. Now it is my turn to spread the travel knowledge to you. No matter what your passion is, I hope this issue of FLUID inspires you to book a plane ticket and experience the horizon that beckons.

WHAT U REPPIN? with FRANKIE SENESE

Years Repping? 5 years Brands: Brixton, Rainbow Sandals, Firewire Surfboards, Creatures of Leisure, and Peppers How many miles do you log each year on the road? 22,000 give or take What type of vehicle do you conquer Florida in? Toyota Tacoma How did you get your first sales representative job in the surf industry? I was working as a manager and buyer at Maui Nix. John Turecki, who was one of the reps I bought from, hired me as a sub rep in 2008. I am still working with him to this day… You represent a bunch of legit brands and just picked up Brixton (hottest new brand out there)! How did you pull that off? I feel very fortunate to be working with Brixton! I have been a fan of the brand for a while and heard they were looking for a Florida rep. A few of the guys at Firewire were friends with the Brixton crew and got me on their radar. What was it like growing up in good ole Dirtona Beach? Easy guy, you can’t call it Dirtona unless you’re from their… I actually grew up in Ormond, right outside Daytona. A lot of people bag on Daytona, but it is pretty rad. I’ve really grown to enjoy most of the events we have come through town. Definitely makes you well rounded growing up around here with the wide variety of people that come through. How was the transition from shop guru to rep? Pretty big change from folding t-shirts and hitting on Spring Break chicks to being a road warrior. I learned so much from working at the shop and it was a great foundation for being a rep. There are definitely days I miss it. I was very lucky to have someone like John show me the ropes. Although, I was never really good at hitting on the Spring Break chicks, but I could and still can fold a T with the best of them! Worst part of your job? Traffic and gas prices. Everyone claims the economy is hurting. Have your brands been hit hard the past few years? I think claim is an understatement, everyone has

felt it to some degree. Luckily, the brands I’m with have weathered the storm. I feel like we have seen the worst of it, hopefully. When you aren’t on the road or grinding away on order entries, what do you like to do with your free time? Hang out with the fam and friends, surf, skate, and golf… I also try not to get into any kind of vehicle. Best surf town in Florida? There are so many great little surf towns in Florida… Too many to name! Any good stories from being on the road? I’ve got one recent story that I have permission to tell. Don’t get too excited though, it’s PG. Towards the end of last year, during slow season, I was doing a Panhandle trip and needed to see a few accounts in Gulf Shores, Alabama. I ended up getting into town around 10pm and hadn’t eaten dinner. I drove around for 15/20 minutes looking for somewhere to eat. The only place in town that was open was a Hooters. I ventured on in and there was not another sole in the place. About 5 minutes after I sat down I heard the door open and I looked over and back down at my menu. I immediately looked back up and saw fellow

road warrior Mike Clancy, I couldn’t believe it. Neither one of us knew the other was in town, matter of fact I don’t think I had seen or spoken to him in several months. What are the odds? Are people constantly hitting you up for free stuff? Yeah, but it is a good thing. If people didn’t want your stuff for free, what are the odds they would actually pay for it in a store? What is the best sales meeting you’ve ever been to? They are all good! It’s great to get out and see the upcoming product line and have some say in what is going on… Plus there is always some fun mixed in, I feel like I get good surf every time I go to a meeting. What is the best advice another rep has given you? I’ve had so much great advice over the years from everyone in the industry, it’s hard to say. There are a lot of great reps in FL that work their ass off and have done so for many years. I just try to follow in their footsteps… Any shout outs? Thank you to all the surf shop owners, employees, and customers for making my job possible!

24 THEFLUIDMAG.COM

A lot of times traveling the world on a small budget can be very challenging, costs add up quickly, and one has to always have faith that things will work out as you find yourself stranded in a far away land. These are the true character building times of a traveler, and very few people have such commitment and desire to really go out and get lost in the world without worrying about the consequences. Shannon “Hopper” Eichstaedt has done just that, and in the last 10 years has evolved from a little grom that surfed New Smyrna Beach to a full fledged veteran of the Mexican coastline and the life threatening waves that pound it’s shores. He has paid his dues, driving thousands of miles up and down the coastline, breaking down in the desert,

eating coconuts for weeks straight, car accidents, near drownings, constant Federale stops and searches. Most normal people would ask, “Why would someone want to do that?” I can tell you right now that the reason is pure and blue and glorious. To ride inside a barreling wave and feel it’s energy around you wondering if you will make it, you feel the wave take a deep breath from within and blow you out with all it’s power and glory. Those moments make everything worth while and Hopper has dedicated a lifetime to the pureness of tube riding and surfing. While you are at your desk on a lunch break reading this article, you will know that Hopper is far away, gaining the experiences of a lifetime.

When we talked to Pro Wakeboarder/Photographer Collin Harrington about Lake Powell, Arizona, he made us want to get on a plane and go there right then! Harrington gave us the inside scoop. “Being in the Wake Industry, I always heard about Lake Powell before I started going there. It was always known as one of the most all time places to go as a wake boarder, an experience unlike any other. If you related it to surfing, it would be like going to Hawaii or Indonesia. There is no place like it on earth and nothing can compare. It feels like you are on Mars or a different planet. You’re basically free to do whatever you want. Liquid Force did our team trip out there for years. We would have 3 house boats full of friends and just disappear out in the lake for a week. There is no internet, cell service or anyone around, so you just disconnect from the world with all your

friends. We started an event out there called BroStock and basically threw a party and wakeboard event for anyone who wanted to join. It was a good excuse to bring people together for the love of wakeboarding and having a good time. We ended up now having close to 30 house boats join us every year. It has since turned into the biggest wake event of the year. We have since moved the event around the US and it will be happening June 6-8 at Lake of the Ozarks.” As we, at FLUID, started watching footage of the Brostock events and festivities, it made things much worse, way too much fun was had without us!! Never again, Collin Harrington-Pro Wakeboarder, Photographer, and chick magnet, we are coming with you this year!!! Brostock 2013 will run June 6th-8th at Lake of the Ozarks, don’t miss it world!!!

What started as a dream for Minnesotan skate filmer, Benji Meyer, turned into a reality when Red Bull jumped on board to help him build a skate park on a barge and float it down the Mississippi River. That’s when “The Red Bull Mississippi Grind” was born, creating the ultimate skate adventure, shipping some of the best pro & amateur skateboarders 1,705 miles down the river, all the way to New Orleans on a floating skate park. Jacksonville Beach based film company, Interpret Studios, was asked to document Benji’s voyage as he and his friends stopped in different cities along the way, immersing themselves in the local skate

scenes and sharing their love for skateboarding with everyone they met. Their final destination was the colorful, spirit filled city of New Orleans, to hold a skate competition for the local skaters. Although the trip in whole was a huge success, the icing on the cake for Benji and his friends was donating the skate park to New Orleans, assuring the local kids will always have a safe place to skate. What started as a fun idea with friends in Minnesota, exploded into a full fledged Red Bull project, that is still giving back at this very moment. Giving a group of young skaters from Minnesota the taste of the American dream.

This epic sunset image takes me right back to my last trip to Colorados. There is nothing better than walking back up the beach, completely spent, after a day getting shacked out of your mind at one of the best rivermouth barrels in Central America. There are local Nica kids that catch lobster off that point in the distance and will bring it right to your door for a buck a piece and there is no shortage of ice cold Tona. Add in that spectacular sunset, and you have the recipe for an epic trip. It’s no wonder Nica has been a long time favorite of Florida surfers with its cheap quick flights, all day offshores,

and multiple rivermouth and reef setups. Colorados is paradise for surfers. With multiple types of accommodations that are available right on the beach, many with swimming pools offering a view of the lineup, where you can relax with a cold beer between barrels and watch your buddies getting the best waves of their life. There is also an on site golf course and offshore fishing charters if you want to catch your own dinner. These two are undoubtedly discussing who got the best barrels that day as they head back to refuel, rest and get ready to do it all over again tomorrow.

32 THEFLUIDMAG.COM

Nils Schweizer, in the image below, got to go on a trip of a life time to the Caroline Islands in Micronesia. Getting there is no easy task. It’s best if you start in Hawaii because that is one of the closest islands, but even from there, it is a hefty chunk of change (approx. $3,000). Nils started to read the swell charts only a few days before the trip and decided it was time to pull the trigger. The forecast was claiming five-star conditions. They were dead on, it was the best it’s been in years. Although Nils looks beyond calm in this photo, the place is no joke. Nils was on a mad-

man’s schedule while there. It went something like this: wake up a couple hours before dawn, get in the panga boat, motor through the reef pass in the middle of the dark, get to the break and paddle out in the dark. From there they would stand up in massive barrels, only come in to eat lunch under the boats canopy and fish while on break. That was pretty much their routine the whole trip, get the best barrels of his life and live up every moment of the trip. Let us all be more like Nils. Living for the moment, taking chances that lead to rewards, and never hold back.

Texas is huge in the wakeboarding and wakeskating world. It has a different feel than the average wake routine, hop in the lake and blast boat wakes all day. You have to be clever and resourceful. When we asked, photographer, Collin Harrington about his trips over there and what it was like, he gave us some insight. “Being in Texas is all about looking on google maps and searching for a little river that has potential. Using the winch gives you so many different options. There

is a lot of stuff to hit, like gaps and crazy drops that make things exciting. Sometimes you score, and other times, it is a lot of work for nothing.” As for how he got this angle, that is when things get interesting. Harrington climbed up a tree that had fallen down in the river. It seemed like a great idea until he started climbing up and noticed the tree was filled with thorns and spikes. Regardless of the obstacles that nature threw at him that day, he and Aaron Reed nailed a mental image.

STRAUN WAGNER How’s life been? Any plans on moving out west still? This last year has been totally unexpected. I graduated from UCF with a B.S. in Environmental Science last spring, and now after realizing I can half way paint and draw, I am heading to art school in Colorado. The Rockies will be in my backyard so lots of backpacking and fly fishing are definitely in the cards. Sounds like a blast, good luck out there. Can you explain to me how we’ve known each other forever, and I never knew that you could draw? Am I a bad friend, or did you recently discover this amazing talent? Hahaha, It’s definitely a recently discovered talent. I’ve been doodling in notebooks like anyone else since I was a kid, but nothing serious until recently. I plan on making my scientific and ecological background an emphasis in my art. Tell me about a life changing event? My father was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It has definitely changed the way I look at life and what is really important. The guy has been there for me through thick and thin. Love you Dad! Sorry to hear about that. I will say a prayer for Poppa Wagner. What is the most unique reaction that you have gotten from your work? Actually, I made my mom cry when I gave her a painting of her grandmother’s house. No one else has cried so that has to be the most unique. What is the best advice another artist has given you? As silly as it sounds, “hang in there” is probably the best advice I’ve gotten. You have to have thick skin and persistence to go anywhere in the art world. You just have to tough it out through the good and bad. Which artist have influenced you? Vladimir Kush, Salvador Dali, Leonid Afremov, Caravaggio, Albert Bierstadt, and too many more to name. Have you participated in any art shows yet? Just one. The Art Fiesta last month in New Smyrna Beach. My Andy Irons portrait was selected for final judging and I sold a painting so all in all it was a success. How do you decide the next art image you will create? It’s always different. Sometimes it’s based on a type of piece I want to have in my portfolio, sometimes it’s an idea that just comes out of nowhere. It’s not something you have a lot of control over unless someone comes to you with an idea. It’s more like the universe decides for you. What do you love about central FL? I love the beach and the beach bunnies of course, and the whole atmosphere. When you travel to other places you notice people don’t say hello or even really look at each other, something that is just a given here. Oh yeah, and site fishing for redfish in the flats! Best place you’ve ever been to? Right in front of that little creek where the lefts never stop barreling, at everyone’s favorite secret beach break in Central America. Favorite Website? pbs. org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow - PBS Nova Science Now! I’m a science nerd for sure. What’s next for you? I’m gonna go hangout with some moose and other critters in the Rocky Mountains, and learn everything I can about the art world. Where can people check out more of your art work? My online shop: etsy.com/shop/StraunWagnerArt My Facebook page: facebook.com/straun.wagner Any shout outs? Mom, dad, stepmom, sister, I owe them everything. Bryan Forand, thanks for the opportunity! John Perkins, thanks for the pictures! Anyone who’s ever encouraged me to go for it. Thank you everyone!
