How much does fishing mean to you? Being a Floridian, it is easy to understand that it’s a huge part of our lives. To many, it’s way of life, what they live for, and sometimes it even provides for their families. To others, it’s just about having fun and going out for a relaxing day on the water. We at Fluid had no choice but to dedicate an entire issue to the sport we love so much. Our readers didn’t give us much choice, they’ve demanded more fishing coverage for a long time! Growing up by the water, I have so many memories of my dad taking my brother, Adam, and I on fishing excursions. We did the family trips to the Keys, flats fishing, and even the occasional offshore missions. Dad’s favorite was to kill the engine on the boat when we were way offshore and act like we broke down in the middle of the ocean. Then he would claim we were in major trouble and sharks were going to eat us alive. I was a pretty big baby about it and would throw a huge tantrum, no poker face at all! Regardless of those scary times, where dad loved messing with us, fishing has a special spot in my heart. Truth be told, I am not the best fisherman, my brother and all my close friends know way more about fishing than I do, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy it and still slay redfish a couple times a year. Fishing to me means complete

relaxation and is an instant mental eraser of all my problems. Nothing matters, I just drift off into a little wonderland where my thoughts are all in the moment, no worrying about work, bills, or any life obligations. It’s hard to explain, but usually I am always over analyzing everything in life and thinking of my next task to complete, but while fishing I am completely thoughtless, not even worrying about if I catch a fish or not. Just looking at the water, sky, and amazing landscape we have in Florida and soaking it all in. I hope that fishing has the same effect on you too. We all need that little escape. Regardless if you feel the same way or not, please do one thing for me, be grateful. Be grateful that we live in such an amazing area surrounded by water. Take advantage of what we have right in our own backyard! As we will show you in this issue of Fluid, Central Florida is world class!! This issue is dedicated to Bill Naughton. A friend that will never be forgotten.

In this issue of Fluid, we take a closer look into the story behind Cronin Surfboards. Founder Craig Cronin is a family man that has overcome some major obstacles as of lately. This past year he broke his neck, worked extremely hard to recover, and came out of his injury with a new outlook on life. Regardless of the injury, which was a minor set back, Cronin continues to maintain a strong presence as one of the East Coast’s top shapers.

Did you start off thinking you could make a living off it?

No, not at all! When I started, it was only a desire to shape. After I started shaping, the only thing I wanted was to become a better shaper. That could happen by doing numbers. Before I knew it, I was making a living at it. It’s harder than a lot of people think isn’t it? Way harder than a lot of people think. To clarify, using a planer, a Skil 100, and NOT a shaping machine with shaping software is hard. To become a skilled shaper, shaping in rockers, bottom contours, and foils takes shaping thousands of boards by hand. Number of boards you have shaped in your lifetime? My serial numbers just hit 8000 What or who inspires you? The shorter and performance board market inspires me more than the longer board and SUP market. I draw inspiration from all board builders big and small, local and international.

What are the benefits of being a shaper in central FL? Being a shaper in Florida, you meet a lot of cool people. I shape boards for their local breaks and boards for their travel needs. Any pet peeves about your shaping room? A snow/foam banked shaping room. I like to have it clean! What’s next for you? Who know’s! Live day to day and hope for the best! After breaking my neck last October during the Sandy swell, I gained a new perceptive on life. I was fortunate to have a positive outcome. Your life can change in a snap of a finger, so be good to people, surf as much as possible and catch as many waves as you can! Where can our readers find out more about your boards and purchase a Cronin Surfboard? Locally, Salty Dog Surf Shops in Daytona and Ormond Beach. They are one of the last local core beachside surf shops that haven’t drank too much of the California Koolaid and still support the local shapers! PHOTOS: PATRICK RUDDY

How did you get involved with shaping surfboards? Well it all started mid to late 90’s at Charlie Baldwin(CB) factory on Park ave. Erie Peeples, another shaper, was working with CB at the time, and I had been getting a few boards from Erie. An opening for glossing and polishing boards is what got my foot in the door. From there I eventually learned every aspect of board building and had my eyes set on shaping. In 2001, before I had all my shaping tools, Erie let me shape my first board in his shaping room. I have to admit it wasn’t pretty, but I got hooked. In 2002, I moved to Newport Beach, Ca. To make a living, I started Cronin Surfboards. Custom Cronin orders and doing ding repair for Becker Surfboards in Huntington Beach and Corona Del Mar paid the bills. I eventually moved back to NSB to work and shape with Erie. Cronin Surfboards got put on the back burner during that time, before I brought it back at the beginning of 2006. It was a difficult time to do so, with the closure of Clark Foam, the surfboard market was introduced to inflated foam prices and the aggressive nature of Chinese manufactures marketing and selling really low priced surfboards.

Best Advice another shaper has given you? The best I have gotten is to let the tools do the work, take methodical steps, and don’t over shape! Seems like you have a solid group of team riders on your boards. What is your recipe for getting these guys dialed in? Taking my recipe of rockers, bottoms, fin placements and cants, and LISTENING to what they want out of their equipment. ong story short, I grew up fishing. But my idea of fishing was going with my dad, finding a nice spot to soak bait, and waiting for a bite. When I met my then-boyfriend, now husband, for one of our first dates, he had asked me what I wanted to do. I replied he should take me fishing. And here starts my love for the lagoon…Never before had I fished in a foot of water! And the thought of how a 17 foot flats boat floats in that shallow of water still amazes me. But beyond the shallow flats, the water can get as clear as glass. So for the first time in my life, I was sight fishing. One of the coolest things I had ever seen was watching a school of 200 reds feeding at sunrise, tailin’ in the flat. It’s one of the prettiest silhouettes that you’ll ever see. Just as jaw-dropping is watching the wake of that same school of redfish when they spook and swim the shallows. The combination of tranquility and energy that radiates from the lagoon is undeniable. So enough can’t be said about the redfishing in the lagoon, but not to be forgotten are the trout. They’re

an interesting fish, fickle and tricky to plan to catch. But when they’re hungry and you’re in the right place at the right time with the right bait, you can get some of the biggest trout of your life. I’ve seen novice fisherman reel in 8-9 pound trout, which attests to a healthy and abundant trout fishery within the lagoon. There’s been a lot said about Mosquito Lagoon. But even hearing how it’s the best place in the world to catch redfish really doesn’t even prepare you for just how miraculous of a place it is. I say miraculous to describe the lagoon because I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some truly incredible fishing. My best day of fishing in the lagoon can be described as this: 30 reds, some oversize, some slot, some for dinner; 8-10 trout, some too small, some just big enough for dinner, and a flounder. I fought so many fish that day my arm was sore. Not every day is like that, though. I’ve had other good days, but I’ve also been skunked and left with nothing more than mosquito bites, a fisherman’s buzz, sunburn, and an annoyed husband. But the lagoon is a place that challenges you to catch a bigger fish, or have a better day on the water than the last. Nothing is promised but the pure beauty of it! (continued on pg. 28...)

MOSQUITO LAGOON: HEAVEN ON WATER There’s more to the lagoon than just the redfish and trout, though. There’s a kind of sensory overload when you’re out there. On any given day you’ll see flounder, tarpon, black drum, dolphins, sharks, manatees, and stingrays. And that’s just to name some. The lagoon is sprinkled with little islands and banks where you’ll see cranes, egrets, eagles, osprey, boars, deer, bobcats, and even more rare of species like the Florida panther. Witness to all of these creatures is proof of what a rare and special ecosystem the lagoon is. Fishing the flats can sometimes be disheartening and aggravating. Every so often, the lagoon can fall victim to irregular weather patterns, water temperatures, and tides causing some pretty murky water. Most refer to the resulting water as an algae bloom; this discolors and depletes the oxygen in the water, changing the fishes eating and movement patterns. A fisherman’s worst nightmare; the algae bloom makes it impossible to sight fish, and at times even catch a fish! Rain or shine, clear or murky, the lagoon is still one of the prettiest places on Earth. It’s a quick escape from the hectic city, and not only a sanctuary to the species inhabiting it, but also a sanctuary for the soul.

CATCHING MORE THAN JUST WAVES

hey called him at one time in his career “The Million Dollar Surfer,” not for his bank account but because he worked harder than anyone in the business—just like a frantic stock broker on Wall Street. Shea Lopez grew up in a sleepy town on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Indian Rocks to be exact. His dad drove him and his brother, Cory, all over the state to surf contests and chase the dream of being a pro surfer. His career was top notch with magazine shots, video sections and valuable ASP points. That all ended with a backside floater in Hawaii, at Pipeline’s Backdoor of all places. But what didn’t end was Shea’s drive to continue to have fun and live the life he chose to live. Nowadays, Shea is raising three children with his wife, Dawn, and catching as many waves and fish as possible. When it comes to backwater and offshore fishing, Shea Lopez knows as much if not more than the everyday fisherman. It’s instinct that filtered into your blood as a kid, from all the long hours stomping through the mud and cast netting mullet to sneaking into a small canal to catch that elusive 27” redfish hiding under a mangrove bush. As of late, Shea has been doing fishing charters with good friend Shane Ryan, whom they call

“Hollywood” for his ability to consistently catch fish. I recently did a backwater canal fishing adventure with Shea and every spot we came across he was nailing down the fish. When I told him to cast at my brother Hopper’s secret spot, he ended up reeling in the biggest redfish of the day. If Shea is not surfing or fishing, you can find him down in the pocket at Ponce Inlet teaching the local and vacationing youth the ways of the ocean and techniques of surfing. Shea- “I never considered myself to be a fisherman growing up. Or a surfer. I lived on beachside and those were just two of the many things we did on most days as Florida-bored kids. The days start way before dawn with a loud alarm, a quick cup of coffee. then race down to one of my favorite sandbars off the local beach. You can’t get out there early enough! Most of the time we hook fish even before the sun shows itself. The typical Florida morning brings optimal conditions, and even at dawn-light, schools of fish can be seen hundreds of yards away. I love standing on the bow of the boat watching the first school of tarpon rolling in the distance. My adrenaline spikes, and the hunt is on. Try to find a spot away from other boats to maximize your chances of hooking up, because you never want to run in on a school of fish with other boats already pursuing them. This will not make you any new friends on the water. Also, the fish feel the pressure of multiple boats around and will dive to the bottom and not eat. Tarpon are constantly on the move, so find a spot as far from other boats as you can and wait for fish to come to you. As fish approach you, try to position your boat as far away as possible, still within casting range. The most successful way of getting a tarpon to eat

left in her. They will jump and thrash on demand, sometimes strait into your boat. This can be dangerous for you and the fish. Grabbing a Tarpon’s jaw will really give you an idea of how strong they actually are. They have rock hard mouths that are used to suck in crabs, shrimp and other tasty treats and crush them into nothing. Like the Snook, they use that suction method to rely on getting food. So it’s best to grab them with your hands instead of gaffing them and putting a hole in their mouths. It’s also important to keep these big game fish in the water. After a long fight, keep in mind that that Tarpon is just as tired as you. Keep them in the water, snap your picture and send them on their way. You want to use big enough equip-

“This is what they call ‘Down and dirty’.” is whipping a live crab on a cork strait in their path. The anticipation of watching the school close in on your cork is almost hair raising. When that Tarpon eats your crab and your cork plunges down, your stomach does the same. Reel like crazy and hold on for dear life, because your in for a ride! Tarpon are some of the most acrobatic game fish in the world. As soon as they feel they’re hooked, Tarpon jump countless times trying to free the hook. Sometimes they jump up to 6 feet into the air. If your equipment stands through the jumps, the battle is half over. You always want to keep constant pressure on the fish, always pulling against the direction she’s trying to go. This is what they call “Down and dirty”. Once you get the fish tired out and doing the side circles, she’s ready to let you take the hook out. You never want to touch a green fish. This means trying to boat a tarpon that still has a ton of steam still

ment to keep the battle as fast as possible. For site casting off the beach, you want a 7 1/2-8ft medium heavy action rod, which helps casting farther and more accurately. For reels, 6000 and up are ideal for the silver king. You want a reel that can hold up to 200 yards of line and has a maximum drag of at least 20 pounds. As far as line goes, in my opinion, you can’t beat 30-40 pound braid. This allows you to cast much farther and takes the stretch out, which you would have with standard mono. For leader, depending on how clear the water is, I like to use a 60-80 pound fluorocarbon. Keep your hook size relative to the rest of your tackle. 6/0 circle hooks are a good size to start with and go up according to bait size. Then you have your knots. Knots are the most important thing in my eyes. Double your main line with a bimini twist or spider hitch and then attach around 6 feet of leader. I would use an albright special or a double-uni knot. Barrel swivels also get the job done using a uni knot on each side. You have to be careful with this setup to not reel the swivel through the eyes of your rod when you have a Tarpon boat side. Also, the swivel and leader setup may be a bit harder to cast. There are plenty of ways to successfully catch Tarpon. Be safe on the water and respect other boaters as you would want to be respected.

grasses for hunting grounds, habitats, or nurseries. Studies have shown that one acre of seagrass is capable of supporting up to 10,000 fish. The Indian River Lagoon covers an area of Florida’s east coast from Ponce de Leon Inlet to Jupiter Inlet, about 40% of its eastern coastline. What amount of that area will ultimately be affected is still in question but the importance of the Lagoon and the fishing economies it supports in communities up and down the coast should not be underestimated. A St. John’s River Water Management District official says the Lagoon supports 15,000 jobs and has an annual economic value of 3.7 billion dollars. It also provides recreational opportunities for roughly 11 million people per year. The region’s economy loses $5,000$10,000 dollars for every acre lost. Since 2011, algae blooms have been responsible for almost half a billion dollars in losses to the state’s economy. Scientists look to many factors contributing to the current trend of larger-than-average algae blooms. Long-term droughts leaving high salinity rates, decades of nutrient rich runoff from fertilizer and sewage, and exceptionally cold winters killing off animals that graze on algae are all considered relevant factors to the size, duration, and frequency of the algae blooms. None of these factors alone are necessarily worrisome but when combined, a very dynamic situation arises. Accordingly to Hark Largin of the St. John’s

River Water Management District, state and local governments, educational institutions, and nongovernmental organizations will continue to investigate the causes of the blooms and develop strategic ways to reduce the size, duration, and frequency of them. One program to note is the Indian River Lagoon Protection Initiative which was created to “better understand the Lagoon’s complex ecosystem, the possible causes for unexpected change and how to protect one of the most diverse estuaries in North America.” There will be little optimism around the affected coffee-brown waters of the Indian River Lagoon this summer. Fisherman and environmentalist alike will be crossing their fingers with hopes that everything that could alleviate the brown-tide is being done. ndian River Lagoon is the grouping of three lagoons: Mosquito Lagoon, Banana River, and The Indian River. It extends from Ponce Inlet to Jupiter Inlet. The overall ecological health of Florida’s Indian River Lagoon is being put into question by the size and scope of another year of destructive algae blooms. Scientists point to a new species of brown-tide algae, Aureoumbra lagunensis, first seen in Florida last year, as the main culprit. The brown-tide algae bloom is decreasing the visibility of the Lagoon’s water, creating a filter for the sun’s rays that won’t allow the sea grasses to receive adequate sunlight for photosynthesis. Without sunlight, grasses die, creating bacteria rots that use up the water’s oxygen as it breaks down. With limited oxygen in the water, fish and shellfish die or relocate. Shellfish are especially at risk because of a mucus produced by the algae that clogs up and ultimately kills them. Over the last three years, several different algae blooms in the Indian River Lagoon have been blamed for kill-offs of at least 47,000 acres of sea grass, over half the total acreage of the Lagoon. The disappearance of the sea grasses is causing anxiety in the region because of their central role in the already fragile ecosystem of the Indian River Lagoon. Manatees and other herbivores use the grasses as a primary food source. Many other marine animals use

MUSIC PROFILE Where and when did you make your first music? First music I made was some blues riffs my Pops showed me back in the day at the ol’ Fernandez headquarters. Where have you been this year? This year I’ve toured in Costa Rica for Best Festival, Virgin Islands for our 5th time, House of Blues Orlando with Ziggy Marley and a couple of festivals in the States. Actually ‘bout to embark to New Orleans this week to perform at Jazz Fest. This year has been great so far and there’s lots more work to be done. I’m definitely feeling blessed. Give thanks. Which musicians do you look up to? Humble ones. Favorite venue to play at in Central Florida? I really dig the Social. [It’s] a good sized room but still has an intimate vibe. If you didn’t have a music career what would you do for a living? I’d be a rocket scientist or an intergalactic peace maker. If you had only six months left to live, what would you do with the time? I’d travel the world. Learning from new cultures and good people enriches the soul. If you were a type of food, what type of food would you be? I’d be extra spicy pad Thai with extra shrimp, a roti and curry dipping sauce on the side. Extra napkins. Don’t forget the large Arnold Palmer…ahhh refreshing. Alright, now I’m hungry and thirsty. Corporal in the US Marine Corps. What type of music is best to work with? “Both kinds, country and western” (blues Brothers) but also rock, some Alice in Chains, Clutch, just comfy music. Be honest, chicks get all worked up when you are tattooing them and constantly hitting on you, don’t they? It happens, but it’s all in the fun of the moment. About how many people have you tattooed?
