How did you get started with photography? As many people know, my Father, Tony is a well known Sports Illustrated photographer. So I have to say that I grew up in photography. My Dad would take me as his assistant to all types of sport events. Although at that time I was more of a camera and film mule than an assistant but I guess I learned a few things while with him. He would allow me to use his equipment at home and I would take photos of birds and animals around our house in New York. But when we moved to Flagler Beach Florida when I was 14, I immediately became a surfer and fell in love with the sport. The first time I made money with a camera was when I started shooting some Flagler Beach locals surfing. I would go print the film at Winn Dixie, edit through, and for $10 bucks, I would sell 8x10’s to guys for my gas money. Although I had been photographing for years, I never thought it was something I would do for a living. I mean when I was in College I chose “Undecided” 3 years in a row for my major. My goal in life was to be a professional baseball player. So when that didn’t happen, I didn’t know what I was going to do. And the funny thing to me is the entire time I was “Undecided “ in my major and perplexed on what to do with my life, I was taking pictures of my friends surfing. It wasn’t till Will Tant, Matt Katsolis, and I took a surf trip to California in 2003. At the tail end of the trip we stopped into Surfing Magazine’s office where I met Matt Walker. Matt & Evan Slater were psyched on my images and liked that I was shooting all digital. Although no one else was shooting digital for them at the time they knew it was the future. They hired me on the spot and I walked out with a handful of assignments. After that one opportunity I jumped in with both feet, ran with it and never looked back. It wasn’t till about a year later that nearly everyone was shooting digital in the Surf Industry.

What was your very first picture that ever got published? It was in a little local paper called “The Flagler Times.” While I was on the Flagler Beach Pier shooting, some guy caught a big tarpon. I think my Mom has that shot in a scrapbook somewhere. After that it was Surfing Magazine and a bunch of fun assignments for ESM. Is there anyone who helped you the most on your way to become a photographer? It’s a funny question to answer because you’re asking me to narrow it down to one. I would love to make it 4 if I can. My Mom & dad have always been there for me. My Dad is like my free professional photographer hotline whenever I am stumped on a shoot. And when I started shooting, he was my NPS service before I ever heard of NPS. Another huge help in my career is my great friend Matt Katsolis. This guy has saved more of my lenses from getting washed away in the ocean than anybody else. He is always looking out for me and has helped me progress as a professional more than anyone else. And the last is also the beginning, my faith in Jesus. Man, I have been a witness to so many miracles and blessings from God that I would be a fool if I denied his role in my life as a professional and even in being a family man. Which type of photography have you been working on the most lately? Since I moved back to the East Coast I haven’t been shooting as much surfing as I was in California. I will always consider myself a Surf Photographer first, but because of our lack of waves, I have been able to dive into different industries. One thing I have really enjoyed is all the weddings I have been shooting. Everyone is just so happy and the whole day is focused on Love. Having the responsibility of documenting a couple’s best day of their life is something I can’t get enough of.

FLUID THOUGHTS

Where is your favorite place to shoot? My favorite place to shoot is a location that I have never shot before. I love shooting new things and challenging myself to think on my feet in situations I have never been in. To me that’s why I love my profession and that’s why my career is still my hobby. With that said, go to Fiji. Your worst trip ever? I would say every country I have been to has offered some type of “dilemma” that wouldn’t be considered ideal. But if by worst you mean, most life threating and chaotic, I would say shooting the Tidal Wave Bore on the Qiantang River in China in 2008. We had a great crew, one of my best friends and Surfline editor Mike Cianciulli, Surfers Rusty Long, Greg Long, Mark Healey, Fuel TV filmer Paul Barranco, and trip organizer Mike Gerard. The Chinese ambassadors treat you like kings if you are risking your life so they can benefit financially. So it was a non-stop mix of terror and fun. I was debating telling you a China story for the “Nightmare Story” question but realized it would take a whole article itself to tell it properly. Just ask me about it if you see me with a beer in my hand.

Tell Fluid readers something about Central Florida that we don’t already know? Our Wild Hogs don’t have the best eyesight, but their sense of smell can rival that of a deers. So know your wind direction when you are stalking them. Do you have a few tips for young photographers who want to go in the same direction like you? Don’t be afraid to reach right to the top. When I first started shooting surfing as a teen, I opened my favorite surf mag at the time, which was Surfing, I went to the masthead and found the email of the photo editor. I wrote a small paragraph to Larry “Flame” Moore telling him I was a fan and I would love to get involved in any way possible. From that one email when I was a grom, Larry and I became great friends. When I moved to California in 2005 I use to sit with him for hours watching him edit and listen to him when he taught me how to read swell patterns. I will never forget how good Larry was to me and I will always look up to him for that and try to do the same toward other young photographers. Sometimes what would seem as the most untouchable people in any industry are just as reachable as calling your mom on the phone. You just have to reach out to them.

Where are you headed as a professional? I am happy to say that I just became the Senior Photographer for Matt Katsolis’ Jacksonville based Cinematography company “Interpret Studios.” Being on board with Interpret Studios has given me the opportunity to expand into industrys I have always wanted to go. One of Interpret’s biggest clients is Red Bull. Red Bull is always thinking of ways to stay in the lead of creative marketing ideas and producing major films that highlight their athlete’s incredible abilities. Along with that, Red Bull wants the best documentary teams they can find. Being on board with Interpret has given me the opportunity to photograph some of the biggest extreme sport athletes in the world. The music industry is also something I have always wanted to get into and I recently got involved with the Switchfoot documentary film, “Fading West.” Being on the stage while a sea of fans are screaming, is the most amazing energy I have felt out side of the ocean. It is something that can be very addicting to document. But ultimately I am just excited to be a part of the Interpret Studios team, so I can continue to grow as a professional and always be around great friends.

How did you get involved with art? I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. My parents have framed pictures of my art from when I was 4 years old. I used to like to draw pictures of our family dog a lot. What or who inspires you? As far as Surf Art, I have two main inspirations, my two great friends, Drew Brophy and Jay Alders. Best advice another artist has given you? I was always good at self-promotion. I guess my friend, Joel Long, thought I was putting too much effort into the self-promotion and not enough effort into my art. He said “ Ok, you have got everyone’s attention, now show them something.” It was some great advice on finding that balance. Now that I am so busy with my art, I find I have very little time for selfpromotion anymore. Where was your first exhibition? My first solo exhibition was about five years ago in Cocoa Beach. I had to take a month off from tattooing to prepare for the show. I painted about eight surfboards and a few watercolor paintings for the show. I sold a lot of prints and got on the cover of the local paper. The show was a great success and helped make a name for me in Cocoa Beach. When you’re back home relaxing, what is your daily routine? Surfing, Yoga, MMA,

DJing, Painting. Favorite Action Sport? Surfing, hands down! It’s the best feeling in the world to be riding down a killer wave... better than sex! How do you decide the next art image you will create? My mind is going 100 miles an hour about art, I am constantly thinking about it. I have hundreds of ideas a day. What do you love about central FL? Great friends, hurricane swells and the Orlando airport. Your top 4 play list on your IPOD? Kid Cudi, Buju Banton, Major Laser, Sizzla Tell me something random, like you were the one who gave Mike Tyson his face tattoo? I challenged Vanilla Ice to a backspin contest in a New Jersey tattoo convention. We went uprock, to floor work, to backspin, for backspin. It turned in to a full on B-boy breakdance circle at the hotel bar. It ended with me almost breaking my back on a suicide flip.

What or who inspires you? Different people and things, happenings, events, songs, everything inspires me. Life and the small chance it (we) had in actually becoming what we are is pretty inspiring to me. Best Advice another artist has given you? Don’t get attached to your piece, but create each piece as if it were going to hang on your wall! Which artist have influenced you? Lots over the years, Katsuhiro Otomo, Moebius (RIP), Chappman Bros, Alan Wong, Brent and Jenny Moss , Erick Collier, Jonathan Miller, Troy Hollaway (Garb Art Movement) and pretty much any new artist I come across that floats my boat. New ones all the time!!! What is the most unique reaction that you have gotten from

your work? What were you on when you painted that????? hahahah nah, kids come up with some really good ones. I kinda have always painted for the kid in myself. I love hearing what they take from it. Where was your first exhibition? Philip Walker Urban Art Series 1, Living Out Loud Galleries, Aspen, Colorado, back in 2004 When you’re back home relaxing, what is your daily rountine? Wake up with beautiful wonderful wifey, cook eggs and bacon, go check waves, if applicable, then surf. If waves suck then regular boring life commences with home depot, post office, lawn maintenance etc etc etc Favorite Action Sport? Would have to be a tie between snowboarding and surfing. I grew up surfing at home in Symra, so i guess surfing is #1. Then living in Colorado for a while where I learned to snowboard kind of changed everything. When I lived at the beach I surfed and dreamed of cliffs and powder and I vacationed in the mountains. When I was living out there I was always thinking about surfing and the ocean- Grass is always greener I guess. So yeah total toss up between the two. How do you decide the next art image you will create? Sometimes I map it out. Sometimes it just happens. Sometimes I’ll sit on something for a week before anything happens. Very strange. Haven’t quite figured that part out. I like my stuff and I like to one up each piece. I think that keeps me progressing. in my opinion of course. What do you love about central FL? It’s the place that made me who I am. I learned how to live, love, laugh, and cry there. It’s a place where it’s ok to

swim with sharks and blast off into space. As a kid that meant anything was possible. As an artist, it was priceless. My Grandfather was a shrimper his whole life. If you ate shrimp in New Smyrna Beach From 1945 to the late 80s chances are he or his son, my uncle, pulled it from the water. I’m a fourth generation Floridian which means my kids will be fifth generation. I think there is something to be said for that. Your top 5 play list on your IPOD? Right now???? I listen to pandora so whatever it is that the gods of pandora want me to hear. My favorite all time song in the world is “The Decline “ by NOFX. I always have an old Nature Kids CD in the 6 disc and the new Hair of the Beast...of course- Been jamming a lot of Whole Wheat Bread lately as well. I kind of grew up listening to everything and therefore dig it all. Tell me about a life changing event? The moment Manifest Destiny took hold and I moved West. Coming of age on my own out in the mountains with all the characters and events that took place. It really was a grand adventure. Something I will always hold deep in my heart. I can never make enough of it- What’s next for you? I’m putting every ounce of

energy into Minion, my clothing line. I’ve teamed up with some extraordinary people on this- John Miller (Smyrna Native) industrial engineer by day and crazy fashion designer by night- Karl Meyer (Chicago) Our big city hype man. We are taking our collaborated efforts to market in the form of short run, high quality, inexpensive artwear for guys and gals! The three of us are each one third the company and each of us are responsible for spreading the word through these free social networking sites in each individual part of the country that we live in. It’s a cool idea that never gets too ahead of itself- Where can people check out more of your art work?

Heck, Coronado had Mr. Hardock! I’ve been really fortunate. What is the most unique reaction that you have gotten from your work? My dear friend burst into tears when she saw the portrait i had done of her. That was brilliant. What or who inspires you? The United States of America, David Bowie, Aliens, Tuesdays, Grace Jones, The Olympic Games, Jack & Rose, Ink, Marilyn, AMC cars, The 20’s, Space Jam, Women, Kerouac, Trains, Astronauts, etc. Where was your first exhibition? I was in Coronado Elementary school’s art show for 5 years with no ribbons. Actually I might’ve gotten an

Preston

Randal Preston has been doing artwork her whole life. She was inspired by her father’s airbrushing at a young age. Both of her parents were good about immersing her into it. She remembers having an artist desk in her room when she was in elementary school which allowed her to always have a space to be inspired and create. In high school Randal took AP art classes for the college credit but never really took it seriously until she met Pat Preston. Randal says how he validated her talent and forced her to show off her work beyond the realm of her own home. All of her artwork is inspired by the things that her and Pat like to do, like fishing, or the places that they travel to. Such places are New Zealand, which happens to be where their honeymoon was. One of her favorite pieces was inspired by a fish shop that they ate at. Randal told me that they had the best fish and chips as well as the coldest pitcher of beer money could buy. All of these memories add up to her favorite piece of art, which keeps a warm place in both Pat and Randal’s heart. Pat has always encouraged her craft, which makes it a bit more simple to evolve as a artist with a great backbone to a relationship. Colton is the newest addition to the family and both Pat and Randal are reminded everyday how blessed they are. For Randal it makes it much easier to find a happy medium to create her next piece of artwork. Working mostly with acrylics and sometimes watercolors is what she prefers and, that bright and cool color effect is the style that Randal tends to go for. Her subjects are from semi realistic perspectives that make for a realistic look with her final product. Her work has landed her jobs with logos for fishing tournaments and shirt designs for New Smyrna Outfitters Store. With all the right tools and a wonderful support of her home life, Randal can expand her wings and grow with her Art while growing with her family. Artist Musician - Yolen Bressan aka Johnny Bongos November 26, 2000 was the date that my now family set foot in the United States. A life changing event to say the least, after 50 years of living in Caracas, Venezuela to something totally different. My father in law, Yolen Bressan, came to the United States to start a magazine advertisement business with the intentions of making a fresh start and giving his family an opportunity that the United States could offer. Yolen has many artistic values. With his style and approach, he can create a very unique and special piece from scratch or by looking at something that inspires him. He is inspired by the love of painting, and his family gives him the extra strength needed to keep the push. He was given advice years ago that you need to put in 110% with everything you do or just simply don’t do it. When Yolen is home relaxing, he enjoys playing his cuatro guitar, percussion and spending time with his wife, Mariella. Yolen says that he has to be inspired to paint and as long as that inspiration is deeply felt, he can grab a canvas and start painting. The great Thomas Golding is Yolen’s primary influence. His hobbies include playing live shows in the local area, playing with his grandson and working on his personal art collection. He is a huge fan of the Disney parks and always enjoys sharing the fun with his family from Venezuela when they are in town. Yolen has helped many people in the area with his words of wisdom and I am thankfully one of them. As Yolen puts it, “I plan to evolve as a better human being and live with my Art, Music and Life”. FL? I grew up in South Florida and used to spend alot of time in the late 90’s on the highway driving up to surf Sebastian Inlet and New Smyrna Inlet. I finally relocated to Central Florida, where I could be closer to the surf, because South Florida gets very inconsistent. Central Florida is also very close and easy to get to Orlando airport to get away during extended flat spells, that we tend to get all too often. Your top 5 play list on your IPOD? Arcade Fire, Silversun Pickups, TV on the Radio, Lil Wayne, and Bob Marley Tell me about a life changing event? I’m sure we can all agree that 9-11 was a life changing event in all of our lives in one way or another. Traveling, as we once knew it,will never be the same. It has become much more stressful and more of a headache to deal with all the extra security measures, lines and extra charges to get to where we want to go. Last song you downloaded? Heads will Roll by the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s

Once I started surfing, I also got into photography and making surfing videos, which became my inspiration to start painting surf spots and other sea scapes based on some of my own photos. What is the most unique reaction that you have recieved from your work? I’ve gotten alot of remarks and compliments over the years which always inspires me to paint more, but the most unique and flattering remarks have been when someone tells me that a painting looks like a photo to them. Which artists have influenced you? There has been many artists over the years that have influenced me and my style of art. To name a few - Joey Lennon, who used to be my business partner with a clothing line called (Krypto clothing.) Joey paints mostly with an Airbrush which got me to buy and try one years ago. Another artist who lives near me in Brevard county is Damien Share. He has been painting surf art locally for many years now and is very well known. His art is always amazing to look at. Others would be Bob Ross from TV, my great uncle, Toni Sisti, who was a famous artist from New York, Wyland, and Steve Power to name a few. Where was your first exhibition? My first public art exhibit was at the Orlando Surf Expos in the mid to late 90’s back when they where still a big party scene. My partners and I used to put our art on T-shirts and hats for guys and girls through Krypto clothing. We would display our art at the Surf Expo. I was also making Surf videos at the time, which we also marketed through Krytpo clothing. When you’re back home relaxing, what is your daily routine? A typical relaxing day at my house would be making coffee and going for a bike ride to check the surf up the street. If there is no surf, I would usually do alot of internet surfing, looking at surf forecast, planning my next surf getaway , maybe watch a surf contest online if there is one somewhere. Work on whatever art and canvas is on my easel at the time, listen to some music, and get in the zone. How do you decide the next art image you will create? A good majority of my art comes from ideas from my own photography, but others are based on popular exotic surf locations, usually somewhere tropical. Some images are inspired by other peoples photos, but I try not to copy them too closely as I don’t want any trouble with people and their work.

Any pet peeves about your art work? I am my own worst critic when it comes to my artwork. I’m always changing my style of painting by picking up new techniques, and I have a tendency to add or change things in my paintings until I am satisfied with them. What’s next for you? I am planning on doing more local art shows and exhibits this year. I would like to try and expand my fan base to a wider group of people other than just surfers. How did you get involved with art? Growing up my dad was always

creating really awesome stuff so it’s only natural that I try as well. I started with drawing & sketching and didn’t start painting until later. Once I started surfing and traveling is when I feel my art really got going. I started painting waves, palm trees and scenes that I would see on my surf trips. I try to paint paintings that are bright & happy. Most of them remind me of somewhere I have been or want to go. What or who inspires you? The ocean and the feeling I get when I see a beautiful sunset or good waves inspire me and what I paint. Also other artist really inspire me. When I see cool art I get fired up to start a new painting. Tell me something random, like your first job was a tow truck driver or you were raised by a pack of wolves?

I like MGMT and all Country music too. What’s next for you? I’m getting ready to go on a surf trip with my brother L J and then heading back down to Puerto Rico. This winter season I am focusing on a lot of training, surfing, and painting. Where can people check out more of your work? I pass that on to young artists that ask. I also tell them to take a business class. It’s way easier and more fun to be a self-taught artist than it is to be a self-taught business person. Which artists have influenced you? Norman Rockwell and Salvadore Dali were some of the first artists I remember being inspired by. Later, Maxfield Parrish and every artist I have seen since have all inspired me. All of them. We all borrow from one another, I am pretty sure consciously

I love bringing other people’s ideas to life. The water and the local wildlife are popular so I try to keep on top of whatever seems to work. What do you love about Central FL? Well the climate suits me, the fun surf, warm water, and with just enough time between swells to anticipate and keep the passion hot, but I think it’s really the people. Nice people and it’s a good place for family!

event? When I was a kid I was really

into playing basketball with my brother Richard and kids in the neighborhood, just passionate about it. Then in middle school during the week of basketball try-outs, I got hit by a car, broke my leg and got all banged up. Since I missed the basketball season, I walked on to the swim team, fell in love with it, became a lifeguard and fell in love again with surfing. I spent 16 years as a lifeguard and have been surfing 23 years. If I did not get hit by that car, I think things would have turned out a lot different and I really enjoy the way things have turned out. Tell me something random,

Can you give me a brief history on how ASG

came to be? We started jamming as buddies playing

40-day tour opening for The Sword and Torche. Those bands have since taken off and are extremely popular; this was before their wave broke. It was amazing. They influenced our music tremendously. We toured with the Dwarves, Fu Manchu, Motorhead, CKY, Graveyard, and Weedeater; 2005 was a pivotal year. After those tours our sound had expanded.

Volcomsponsored surfer, Billy Hume, sent one of our demos out to Volcom Entertainment Headquarters which started our interaction with Volcom. We recorded our first official full-length Volcom Entertainment album, Assimilation of Self Gratification, in 2003 and played Van’s Warped Tours during 2004-05. How was the Warped Tour experience? Horrible! Though there were some good punk rock bands, it was during the height of “screamo” and “emo.” We just didn’t fit in and called it quits after the third year. What happened after you ditched Warped Tour? We linked up with producer Matt Hyde [Slayer, Fu Manchu, Strung Out], who produced our second album, Feeling Good Is Good Enough, under Volcom’s label. We added Jonah Citty, a second guitar player, to expand our live sound at the conclusion in 2005.

I was scared to sing at first, but over the course of ten years it’s gotten better, very slowly. I guess that’s what we’ve done the most experimenting with, seeing what I can do with that, so it has changed the sound some. I want the music to evolve. I don’t want to keep doing the same things over, but I don’t want to completely change either. So it’s a tough tug-and-pull situation. But at the end of the day, we’re making music that we’re interested in, and if other people like it, that’s great. There’s no point in just making what you think your fans may want to hear. When

do you expect the new album to be released?

Probably early 2013. Relapse plans to release one song out in December on the internet, and a video, which should be new and different, exciting, and what Relapse really encourages and wants. What bands influenced your

music earlier on? We’re all surf rats, so we were into watching surf videos when we first

started and learning about punk rock. There were punk rock influences from 90’s-era Epitaph bands, but at the same time, we were into classic rock, like Sabbath and Zeppelin, so it was a fusion of those. We weren’t dedicated to being strictly a punk rock or Sabbath band, but were trying to figure out how we can blend it all together. The goal from day one was to master that formula, to appeal to all genres, and I think we’ve come close. You have a side-project going on, Crusades. Tell us more about it. Yeah, it’s this band called Crusades, it’s just me and the drummer from a band called Thunderlip, they also toured in Florida a bit. He’s a good buddy of mine, a great drummer. It’s just finding time. In the last year, we jammed about 20 times together, and turned up some songs that we thought were good enough to be released that people may enjoy. We recorded everything on my 8-track at my house, except for the drums, and released it on iTunes. Volcom released it for us. Hopefully it’s something that can come to fruition live. I think it’s good for other musicians to play with each other. Your lyrics are pretty captivating, what inspires them? Lyrics are the last thing that’s finished. It’s nice that they read well, without music, so that’s a bonus. Some people like to sit down and write a story, have a direction or something they want to say, but nothing like that’s every really worked out quite well for me. I come up with one line that I find interesting and build off of it. As long as it’s colorful and tells some kind of weird little tale in my brain that’s entertaining enough for me to sing or scream about it for years on end... What is your favorite Florida surf spot? Spanish House, we hold that spot sacred, hit it up every time we’re there. Even when

it’s flat, we’ll jump in the water! Ponce Inlet pumps it. When you guys get to go home,

what do you do besides surf and jam? Well, everyone has jobs, side jobs. I’m a

commercial fisherman, so I’m usually fishing and hanging. It seems like you guys have a pretty strong bond to have been together and touring for about 10 years

now and still going strong. What’s your secret to success? Yeah, we’ve been together for ten years and haven’t lost anybody. There are never any major quarrels usually, because we’re friends and when someone’s not in the mood for, whatever. We’ve watched thousands of bands crumble and fall apart on the road. We all have the same goals. It’s not glamorous, and it’s hard work. Sure, there’s beers involved, which helps (laughs). There are a lot of bands just not doing it right. They blow it somehow. You gotta be careful, gotta be raised right, ya gotta have a good country upbringing with good mommas and daddies keeping ya in check!” So what country had the biggest response to you guys? I was shocked at the response basically from every country! I thought for sure there would be some shows where nobody showed up, but there were kids singing lyrics from every country, from Italy to Austria, it was crazy.
