NOTE FROM EDITOR Although, sometimes the past seems like a distant memory, it is actually some of the most important components of life. I've always been big on respecting my elders and learning from all their great experiences they've had prior to my existence. It's hard to ignore how much things constantly change and all the unnecessary regulations that we are burdened with. Continuous advancements in technology add a fabricated sense that things are progressing, but true creativity comes from within. In the present day, there is minimal vision and a constant flow of imitators. Everyone leads a different path. Many of us take what we have learned from our earlier generations and continue their legacy. Others tend to mark their new tracks and find their own way. I can't say that one theory is better than the other, but I've learned that it’s hard to ignore the quality of innovation that has been paved from those who made their mark on our society. In this issue, we reflect on several legends that have had a tremendous impact on Central Florida. The most meaningful part of this select crew, is they’ve never stopped influencing. What was most apparent from then verse now, is that their individual approach not only defined them, but helped them leave a mark that will never be forgotten.

Looking back at this past winter, there has been a lot of chatter along the coast about it having been the best season in years. I remember the first season I got Reef Road, the wave broke a dozen times, seemed like it anyways. I would tune into, Surfline’s, Mike Watson's reports and listen to him talk about how good it was down south. I know it was good too, because he would end the reports by saying, "be safe out there". Finally, one day I blew off class and made my first south Florida swell run. For a photographer it was kinda like the first time you got barreled. You don't really remember it, you just know it happened and you're hooked! I couldn't believe my eyes; tall palm trees, 100-feet high, groomed lines with light, off-shore winds, and the bluest of blue water. I thought to myself, "Does it get any better than this?” Fast foreword 10 years, and I'm still hooked, still asking myself, "Does it get any better than this?”

BEST WINTER IN 3pAGES.

In the following pages you'll see some images from what we call “The Best WINTER Season in Years,” but don't take it from us. We asked our closest Central Florida friends to weigh in on their experience this winter season. Enjoy! words by: Patrick Ruddy

"Definitely the best winter I've ever surfed in my 16 years on the planet...." - Luke Marks "Water temps at 55 in New Smyrna, but business is good! Nice ice cold blue waves!" - Jimmy Lane "The winter waves have been fun for the most part. Seems like there's always been something to ride, with a few really classic offshore tubing days!"- Gorkin

"Fogged out, lol!"- Jeremy Johnston "Well, before I left (Jan-March), it was real fun! It looks like there's been a crazy amount of swell since I've been gone, so hopefully everyone had a good winter!" - Evan Geiselman "With the northern states taking a pounding from winter storms, our southern states were rewarded with more than just a few poundings from the swell fetch received by Mother Nature."- Tupat

3 5

"Can you send me a pic of my board!?" "Just checking on the progress, is it done yet?"- Craig Cronin "Nippy, booties, shaping & one epic session"- Jay Smith "The winter waves were pretty fun, there was a bunch of pretty good refractors and we had a couple north swells that seemed to keep Florida pretty busy" - Peter Mendia "If you followed the right swells, to the right spots on the right tides, it could have been great! For example if I got whipped into the best barrel of my life at pump house, it would be a winter I would never forget. But for ponce on a day to day basis, very difficult to get excited" - Johnny 'sixtoes' Lewis

4 legends

FEATURING:

CLYDE BUTCHER - KEM MCNAIR - TERRY PRESSLEY - TRAE PIERCE They say that the only thing you can count on in this world is change, but there are a few people who prove that saying wrong by withstanding the test of time. In this feature, we sit down with four Central Florida legends who continue to impact the way we live. How do you define a legend? We are still not sure, but whatever it is, these four have it and we want more.

photographer

clyde butcher NAME: CLYDE BUTCHER PLACE OF BIRTH: KANSAS CITY, MO WHERE YOU CURRENTLY RESIDE: VENICE, FLORIDA SHOOTING SINCE: PICKED UP MY FIRST CAMERA AT THE AGE OF NINE. PHOTOGRAPHING PROFESSIONALLY SINCE 1965.

Where and when did you take your last pictures? My last photography trip was in Big Cypress National Preserve, about a month ago. How did you get started in photography? I was an architect major but couldn’t draw my designs. So, I built architectural models and photographed them. I had to learn photography in order to do that. What was your very first photograph published? My first photograph to be published was of an architectural model I built for a development. I believe it was published around 1966. My first landscape photograph that was published was around the late 1980’s. Is there anyone who helped you the most on your way to becoming a photographer? My wife. Do you ever shoot digital, and if not, why? I have spent most of my landscape photography career photographing with large format cameras. I preferred using them because the large size of the film allows me to capture the greatest detail. When digital first came out, I tried it. I REALLY didn’t like it. The overall quality was horrible. I never picked up another digital camera until recently. Two things changed my mind. One - I’m getting older and it is very hard for me to carry the 60 pound large format camera backpack. Two - The quality of the technology for digital cameras is much, much better than when I first tried it. I love photography and I want to keep shooting, but large format is too heavy, so I’m using digital for the most part now. Do you have any nightmare stories to tell, which has happened while you where at work? (losing cameras in the water, robberies, airport fees because of overweight, etc)

26

Never have I lost anything in the water or by robberies. I did have an airport problem once. I had been invited to photograph the mountains of Cuba for the United Nations Year of the Mountains. It was about nine months after 9/11, so the airports were on high alert. Evidently, the guards at the airport had never seen a large format 8x10 camera, nor did they realize that the film came in an 8x10 box. They kept wanting me to open the box so they could see what was in it. I told them film, but they didn’t believe me. I tried to show them how the camera worked, but it didn’t help. I ended up not flying out because they wouldn’t let me leave until I opened the box of film! The next day I tried again, but this time I took a 5x7” view camera and they seemed to understand that size of camera, and I got through okay. What is your favorite place to shoot? Florida Your worst trip ever? ….mmmm….I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad trip. I go where the light tells me to go. I don’t decide ahead of time what it is I’m going to photograph, so I normally don’t have a problem finding wonderful photography. Besides, sometimes the “worst" trip is just another word for adventure... Do you have a few tips for young photographers who want to go in the same direction like you? Never give up. Be willing to walk through doors, and if they are wrong, then try another door. As an artist, it takes dedication, and often, it takes a willingness to sacrifice. There is a reason for the term “starving artist”. I, with my family, have been starving artists, but we kept on the same path. I feel fortunate that it has worked out so well. I appreciate the success I have because it didn’t come easy. PHOTO: COURTESY OF BUTCHER

artist

kem mcnair NAME: KEM MCNAIR PLACE OF BIRTH: ASHBURN, GEORGIA THEN MOVED TO NSB ONE BLOCK FROM THE BEACH IN 1962. WHERE YOU CURRENTLY RESIDE: NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL

What is the biggest difference between now and back in the day? Well how far back, 50 years? There was only very old school, super heavy longboards(30 lbs), and no such thing as a surf leash. We were pretty good swimmers, only about 20 to 30 surfers in the whole area. We mostly surfed at Flagler Ave parking lot( called Main St at the time)In NSB, the Haven, which is about a 1/4 mile south of the condos, at Nsb Inlet, and Bethune Beach, which is south of New Smyrna. There were no condos at all, and no houses on the beach down south around Bethune. They started building the NSB Jetty around 1968 and finished it around 1971. No one surfed the inlet back then because the waves were horrible and very disorganized. When I was in my senior week 1971 (skip school week), David Coffee and myself went to surf The Haven. Just for grins, we rode down to the inlet, and here was this incredible 6 foot perfect left & right peak. We surfed it for hours and didn’t tell anyone. We went back the next day and surfed it again. This went on for a week and our friends started asking where we had been surfing, and we just said, “oh, just around!” Well, within a few days, somebody saw our car down there and showed up. Then another showed up, and, within a short time, the inlet was the spot! There are some crazy numbers I've heard about how many surfboards you've painted, what is the total amount? Well, at one point I have paid invoices from CB surfboards for up into the 9000 range, and that was laminating and airbrushing. We were doing 40 to 60 boards a week for years. I also worked for 3 or 4 other board builders and sprayed & laminated for them too for a few years, so it’s higher than that. It was piecework at the time, so if you got really good at it and really quick, you could make some decent money. It was a brutal job in 90 degree heat, in the shade, in the summer time. I have a lot of respect for anyone who builds surfboards. It is an incredibly hard job to do consistently and with perfection. What motto do you live by, if any? I try to treat people with respect, very rarely do I ever get mad. I try to keep a totally positive attitude all the time. Negativity is a really bad place to be for anyone. It never accomplishes anything and mostly breaks down the good others are trying to do. People that live with negative thoughts all the time, usually end up a miserable failure! Stay Positive!! Best surf trip of your life? Witches Rock and Ollies,Costa Rica. 10 to 12 foot perfect offshore lefts and rights for 150 yards at witches for 4 hours. The most perfect machine waves I’ve ever seen and then one hour later 6 foot perfect rights for 150 yards at Ollies. Only us and 3 others in the water. Name a few old school characters that still are out in the water shredding? David Coffee, Reese Lewis, but the really Old guys are, they started surfing in 1962, Ronnie Dregors and Skipper Eppelin. Do you still perform at venues around Central Florida? Mostly private events 3 or 4 times a year and a couple of special parties for the Surfari Club. In fact, we call our band the Surfari Club Band. It’s Lois Ridgedill on vocals and keyboards, Billy Chapin on guitar and vocals, me on guitar and vocals, David Coffee on bass and vocals, Jimmy Bunn on drums and vocals, and Carlos Fernandez on percussion. We never rehearse. We show up and make it up as we go, and it always turns out great. We’ve all been playing 40 to 50 years, so it’s pretty hard to trip us up. But it does happen, and we laugh like hell! If you can go back 25 years, what advice would you give yourself? Take more surf trips. I still haven’t had enough big, beautiful barrels, and I’m getting up there in age. When you get slammed by a big, thumping, tube beach break, you might not come back so fast. What is our youth lacking? Maybe some respect. I have so much respect for surfers, artist, and musicians that came before me, and I tell them when I see them all the time. I let them know that they showed me how to be better in so many ways as a person and at whatever I’m trying to do at this moment. Any last shout outs? To you guys for asking me to be in the mag. Patrick Ruddy for coming and spending some time & shooting some photos. The NSB Surf Crew and all the great surfers we have here now. I hope I was able to inspire a few guys over the years to turn a little harder, hit the lip a little more vert, and go a little faster into a gouging cutback. Cause I still am doing it in my mind, but my body just won’t let me do it on a shortboard. That’s why I’m back riding the longboards I started on 50 years ago, but I’m still just as Stoked as ever! I’ll surf till I can’t walk anymore, and then I’ll take up bodyboarding…

TERRY PRESSLEY NAME: TERRY LYNN PRESSLEY PLACE OF BIRTH: YORK, PENNSYLVANIA WHERE YOU CURRENTLY RESIDE: NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FLORIDA

PHOTO: RUDDY

PHOTO: TUPAT

PHOTO: COURTESY OF PRESSLEY

Growing up so close to you, I've always noticed that you take such pride in showing the younger generations the right way. Why have you always watched over us and guided us? Did I? No, I guess it would be because I always was lucky enough to feel the respect from the groms. So, I guess you could say, that I wanted to reciprocate that. What is the biggest difference between now and back in the day? Nowadays, there is way more opportunity, but it's also more competitive. There are a lot of good surfers. How much have Volusia County Beaches changed? A lot. There was more freedom back then compared to today's laws and regulations. What is the ODB and NBK? Letters in the alphabet (he laughs). What motto do you live by, if any? Point it. Heisman. Back Panther! And always be a gentleman. Best surf trip of your life? The Caribbean, back in the 80's with the SunDek crew. Did you have any rivals during your professional surfing career? Everyone from down south. Back then, in order to advance, you really had to annihilate the competition. What was the pinnacle of your career? Having my photo featured in Surfer Magazine was huge. If you were from Florida and got featured in a magazine like that, it was pretty heavy. If you can go back 25 years what advice would you give yourself? Travel more. No disrespect to the ladies, but relationships will come later. What is our youth lacking? They don't realize how good they have it. Thanks for your time, any the last shout outs? Shout out to ODB and NBK.

INTERVIEWING LEGENDS

Musician

Trae PiercE NAME: TRAE PIERCE PLACE OF BIRTH: MIAMI, FLORIDA WHERE YOU CURRENTLY RESIDE: DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA

Hi Trae, thanks for taking the time to chat with us. How’s life been? Life has been great for me. I am favored. Tell us about how you got into music, and what instruments you play the most? My mom plays piano and had a piano in the house growing up. I just started playing around with the piano. Then, my step dad bought me a lead guitar, and then my childhood friend left his bass at my house. When I picked it up, I knew I was a bass player. So I play bass the most now a days. At what age did you first start touring, and with whom? I started touring around age 1213 with a gospel group called the Gospelaires of Dayton Ohio, then on to the famous funk band,The Ohio Players. You’ve been in the music game for a long time, what best describes the type of music you play? I have and will play ALL kinds of music, country, rock, gospel, funk blues, and R&B. I call what we do, FUNK Rock & Roll. What is the biggest change in the music scene now, opposed to when you first started? When I first started, there were a lot more real musicians out there. You had to really be able to play to be in a band. We took music seriously, learned our chords and scales. Most musicians, now a days, know them but not KNOW them. Now a days anyone can make music, and its accepted, good or bad. How does it feel to have achieved 3 Grammy awards? I feel privileged to have won Grammys, and some of the other awards that I have won. I’m honored be in the chosen few, those awards are not given away lightly. Who has influenced you the most along the way? Many people but bassist, Stanley Clarke, is my hero! Marshall Jones, Peter Frampton and Roger Troutman are also influences. What is the most amazing venue you've had the chance to play? All of them are amazing to me, but the Staples Center and Wembley Arena in England are nice and memorable. We've seen you playing around Central Florida in your personal band (Trae Pierce and the T-Stone Band), tell us about you guys? Great band on and off stage, very very talented bunch of young, hungry musicians and singers. We consist of myself, my son Rae Pierce, David Grant, Missy Ten, Byron Garner, Montez Garner and Twitch Wilson, one of the best shows EVER. Also, Flo-Rida was in our band too in the beginning, and we were, at one time, his band. What advice would you give young musicians who might want to go down the same roads as you? Take every opportunity that comes your way, and i do mean every, big or small. All of my opportunities brought me to where I am now, and I'll still take any opportunity today. And study your music so that you can make good music. What motto do you live by, if any? Play music for the love and the rest will follow, and humble is the way to accomplish your dream. Dedicate yourself to something, it will dedicate itself to you. Where can we see you play in Central Florida this spring? BB Kings Club, Om Bar and quite a few festivals. Our schedule is posted at traepierceandthetstoneband.com and www. facebook.com/TraePierce.TStone Thanks for taking the time to chat with us, any last shout outs? My pleasure. Shout outs to my family, friends, T-Stone fans and supporters, The Blind Boys of Alabama, all the venues who took a chance on us, and the agencies that gave us a chance. PHOTOS: RUDDY

Hi Jamie, tell us about Beach House graphics and how you got started. Beach house graphics is a Custom Vehicle Wrap & Sign Shop. Family owned & operated, located in Ormond Beach. The business was started by my wife, Krista, and myself, Jamie Robison, in 2012. We specialize in custom vehicle wraps but also do small signage, real estate signs, banners, stickers, and graphic design. I am a NSB native and grew up in the town’s vast art scene. I have always been an artist and into graphics but always struggled with how to make a living with it. I got my degree from DBCC in 2004 in graphic design. Then took a job in Ormond with a model train company, Broadway Limited Imports, as their in house graphic artist doing highly detailed Photoshop renderings of model trains for catalog and trade show displays. In early 2008, my wife and I decided to move to southern California to be closer to her family, and so I could pursue a career working on movie posters. Little did we know that the economy was about to tank. Unable to find work in SoCal, I took a job working for a sign and vehicle wrap shop. This is where I became fascinated with wraps. I spent almost 4 years designing, working in the shop, and learning how to wrap, before we decided to move back to our house, here in Ormond. We always referred to our house, here in Ormond, as our Beach House, even though i’s not really on

the beach. So when it came time to pick a name for the shop, Beach House was born. What's the strangest wrap job you've ever been asked to do?

I had this kid who belonged to a car club, out in Cali, that drove a 2008, peal white, Toyota Camry that was all hoopty and airbrushed up. He wanted me to wrap the face of his wheels with this cloud print. So, i did! He came back a week later with the clouds peeled off. He got kicked out of the car club for his fluffy wheels. How's the market in central Florida for graphic and wrap artist? For us, it’s been good! There are a hand full of shops up and down our coast that do what we do. I can tell that the economy is changing and getting better. More and more people are willing to wrap their cars for advertising purposes. They’re finding that it is one of the best forms of advertising. They are a 24-7 high impact mobile billboard that is always at work. What else do you wrap besides vehicles?

PHOTOS: RUDDY

BEACH HOUSE GRAPHICS

BH I have a habit of wrapping everything! if a sticker can stick to it, I will wrap it! They make a lot of architectural films now with crazy colors and textures, like snake skin and velvet. You can wrap furniture and appliances. The possibilities are becoming endless only limited by imagination and money. What's the funniest thing that's happen to you recently? I was wrapping a boat and stepped off the ladder and tore my shorts, basically, in half in the crotch area in front of this lady who mobile cleans cars. She had a big smile on her face! I went around to the back of my truck and taped them back up with some scrap wrap material and masking tape and went back to work. How lucky are you, and why? I have a beautiful wife, 2 awesome kids, I enjoy my work, and I live near the beach! Life is good… Tell us something about your work you've never told anyone? Sometimes I hide my signature or other sayings in the designs of my wraps without anyone knowing. This is something I have done with my art work since high school. Jamie thanks for taking the time to rap out with us, any last shout outs? Keep your eyes open for our BH!

fishinG REPORT

Inshore

As we approach March and April, expect the Reds to be swimming in larger schools, grazing shallow grass flats, looking for shrimp or any other bottom dwelling organisms. Redfish have already begun to school up, but the larger Reds have been roaming alone. One trend we have seen with the larger Spotted Sea Trout population is they have begun to dwindle due to a green algae bloom that has been killing off a good amount of seagrass in the lagoon. Where there is seagrass, there are billig trout. The trout game should step up with the arrival of our warmer spring time weather, granted with whatever population that may be around. Also, for any fishermen looking to get a commercial license, it's time to get ready to pile on Jacks. Jack Crevalle will be arriving inshore, once that spring weather arrives, in massive schools.

Florida’s central coast is prime for the picking in the months to come. The slight rise in water temperature will see the brave few break away from the school — ready for you to drop in and reap the benefits. Always plentiful along Florida’s east coast, dolphin (Mahi) are especially numerous in about 70 feet of water six to seven miles from the coast. If you can handle the somewhat tougher seas of the season, April and May are prime for larger-sized dolphin. They tend to follow their fallen comrades to the boat too, so your fellow anglers will be in luck. Head out a bit deeper and you might get lucky enough to run into some yellows.
