NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to our 2016 Spring Edition of Fluid Magazine. Who doesn't love spring? Living in Central Florida during Spring time means you pretty much have won the lottery of life. The time changes and we can finally enjoy all that this land has to offer. If you don't get out and explore, you’re pretty much failing to cash that winning lottery ticket in. For all of us nine to fivers, we are especially grateful that short, cold winter days are behind us. For me, Spring signals that it is time to start planning out some vacation time in my schedule. For everyone who knows me, they know I am an absolute travel hound. You don't always have to jump on a plane to have a good time. Although, our family motto is “I would rather have plane tickets than presents.” Central Florida has so much to offer right at your fingertips. You can always find a reason not to do a trip; work, school, romance, finances. The key is to find a compelling reason to do it and allow all other factors to fit in around that. With that being said, get out and explore what Florida has to offer. A great start would be Ponce Inlet! Check out our spot check in this issue for the inside scoop. BRYAN FORAND Founder / Editor

If you had to be locked in a room for 24 hours with Kylie Jenner and Kanye West, would you be scared or excited? Definitely not scared ... Would be pretty excited to meet them, but they aren't my absolute favorites and not sure how I'd like to be locked in a room for 24 hours. Got a boyfriend? Yes, Kevin McKernan! Worst Pickup Line? Are your legs tired, because you've been running through my mind all night! Most important thing on a first date? To be able to connect with one another. Turn on’s? SPRING QUIVER WITH MIKE RANNIE

4

Mike Rannie is a cool cat in so many ways. He has always been the type of guy that is extremely friendly, outgoing, and very generous. You know that person that is always in such a good mood, that it kind of freaks you out? Well, that is just Mikey! Good vibes coming your way at all times, whether in or out of the water. From boards passed down from his father to ones that he shaped himself, Mike has a selection that will make any board connoisseur gleam with envy. Sit back and enjoy as Rannie tells us more about his Spring Quiver.

1 . - 9’2 Bing Lightweight Pintail - 10’ Fins Unlimited “Longer” Fin - Favorite longboard for all around conditions. Big fin helps nose riding. 2. - 7'5 Alaia - Paulownia wood construction - Fast and free, no other kind of board mimics a finless. 3. - 6’8” Ronnie Rannie Single Fin Egg - Flat rocker with ‘V’ in the last 1/3 of the tail. This board fits in the pocket and allows for smooth, flowing turns. It also trims very fast and nose rides very well. My favorite Egg/Transition board for smaller, summertime surf.

10 5 6

4. - 6’0 Ronnie Rannie “Energy” Thruster w/ HV Side fins - Shaped by my father Ronnie Rannie in the Energy factory in Sydney Australia. This board is a true example of the beginning of the refinement of the thruster. It goes really well in glassy waves, and the long box allows for unique middle fin placement. 5. - 5’8” Campbell Brothers “OctaFish” - Malcom Campbell shaped 5 fin Bonzer with fluted wings and a 6.5” Fins Unlimited “Bonzer” middle fin. This board handles surf of almost any size range, and is one of the most versatile of my quiver. Very fast and solid surfboard.

7

6. - 5’9” Self Shaped Pintail - 15in Tail, Very flat deck and a Deep single concave from nose to tail make this board a speed demon. I use this board when the waves are good and want to do turns and get barreled. Self shaped and glassed, its always the best feeling riding something you’ve made!

8

7. - 5’7” Ronnie Rannie - This board is a great in-between board for small to mid size waves. It’s very wide in the midpoint, but the ‘hidden wing’ in the tail significantly narrows the rear of the board and makes turns much easier. It also has a textured deck, which is a cool, unique feature. 8. - 5’6”(toe side)/ 5’4”(heel side) Donald Brink Custom for Reese Lewis - My first step into the asymmetrical world of surfboards. It puts you in places a normal fish/small egg wouldn’t normally allow and goes really well. Shown as a twin fin but ridden with a small trailer.

9

9. - 5”4’ Surfboards Australia - Very Cool and unique feeling board that is a small wave machine. Featuring an “S” deck and three fins unlimited boxes. This board can make a fun session out of even the smallest of waves. 10. Dog - Sunny Pup - Catahoula - 6yrs - female

This winter has produced one of the more impressive runs of surf that we can remember. The beginning of 2016 has been highlighted by a number of swells impacting the entire coast. As we near the end of this potentially record breaking El Niño event, it feels safe to say that the expectation for above normal surf for the majority of the East Coast has verified well. Can you remember the last time we've had glassy overhead surf for weeks on end?!! The end is near, but it’s not over yet. Many of the long range climate models continue to show enhanced storm activity in the Southeastern U.S. over the next 45 days. The good news is both of these signals are common during strong El Niño years. All of this points towards a continuation of the above normal surf activity for Florida. It is hard to think that the next 45 days could come anywhere close to the last 45 days! Let's hope that El Nino proves me wrong. We sure as hell know that this year has been one to remember!!! Thanks El Nino! Until we meet again, old friend. “A half a winter with warm temps, no surf. How far can a slingshot be pulled till, finally, January let the El Nino nugget fly. The entire East Coast/ Caribbean got a dose of huge swells with good conditions. Real, world-class surf conditions, and everybody lived happily ever after. But it wasn’t a fairy tale…” - Mark Hill - Photographer "The waves have been non stop this season for El Niño. I was lucky enough to get pumping surf in PR last week. Looks like we will have waves for the duration of the season too. Best surf season in a long time!" - Eric Gieselman - World Traveler and Pro Surfer

"We've honestly had one of the better winter seasons for a while now, and the amount of times me and Daniel have driven up and down from south Florida to the outer banks just proves how productive our El Niño season has been." - Matt Glenn - Up and Coming Pro Surfer

I suppose as surfers we always hold dear the place where we caught our first wave, and for me that place is Ponce Inlet. A little over 35 years ago I waited patiently while my older brother gave it a try with our shared board. Finally getting my turn, I paddled out and rode a knee high wave to the sand, changing my life forever. I still get just as excited to surf there to this day. The isolation makes it feel like you’re going on a little surf trip and the community and camaraderie give it a special home-like feel. If you’ve ever been there on a solid south swell, it’s the closet thing to a point break in Central Florida. Throw in a couple classic salty riverfront bars for after surf grinds and brews and you’ve got a spot not only worth checking out, but worthy of coming back to anytime that south swell train rolls in. Oh, and it’s not a trip to Ponce if you didn’t get burned by Korn! - John Brooks

Legends - Bernie “Mad Dog” Crouch, Clyde Rogers, Rich Murray, Korn, Scott Brill, Seadog, Jim Morris, Bruce Miller, & Ronnie Rannie The Crew - Johnny "Sixtoes" Lewis, Chad Doyle, Mike Rannie, Lopez Brothers, Wagner Brothers, Ricky Pasternak, Travis Ajay, Heilman Brothers, Dustin Richardson, Graham Gilchrist, John Brooks, Jeff Lastinger, Christian Oehmke, Truelove, & Jerry Schaffer (sorry to all that we missed...the list is never ending) Why we love Ponce - Between the great fishing off the jetty and peeling waves, Ponce is a waterman’s dream. Being able to bike to all the restaurants and bars is icing on the cake! Local attractions - Ponce Inlet’s best attributes are its’ natural assets. Surrounded by water, it is hard not to be on the water at all times. Great spots for the family include Ponce De Leon Lighthouse, Marine Discovery Center, Inlet Harbor Marina, & The Inlet Park. History - Ponce Inlet was originally explored by Ponce De Leon himself in the early 1500’s and underwent a name change from Mosquito Inlet to Ponce Inlet in 1928. The lighthouse went into service on Nov. 1 of 1887 and is now a Federal Landmark. The ½ mile long jetty installed some 40 years ago helps give Ponce that magic point-break feel on a south swell.

Great dining experiences & happy hour honey holes - Inlet Harbor, Hidden Treasure and Jerry's Tiki Bar. Inlet Harbor takes the crown, with live music and best menu in the area. Oh yeah, and the sunset and drink menu are pretty epic too! Late night hot spot - For this one we would say hit one of the restaurants above, and then hook up with the locals for the late night house party. Best places to stay - Try Ponce Inlet Realty, AirBnB, VRBO, or Homeaway.

PHOTO: RUDDY

Something you probably didn't know about Ponce The lighthouse was originally built on the NSB side of the inlet but was destroyed by local Indians. Babes and dudes - Not the hub of Central Florida for nightlife. Your best bet is to look at disappearing island or the beach for your new friend to be. Sponsored by:

PHOTO: RUDDY

Something different - Go skate the park or climb the lighthouse.

PHOTO: RUDDY

Fisherman's Paradise - Ponce Inlet has an abundance of fish species. Going into Spring, look for the bite to be hot on Black Drum, Sheepshead, Redfish and the elusive Snook. Also look for an increase in Flounder around the jetties. Local knowledge (Insider info) - Come by boat to your favorite watering hole. The cops in Ponce are something to be aware of. It is a sleepy little town and not much going on. When on the road, keep it in between the mayonnaise and mustard(white and yellow lines) and always go the speed limit. Best time of year - Hurricane season for surf and Spring/Summer for hanging at the beach. Hazards - Although it's neighbor, New Smyrna Inlet, is well known as the Shark Bite Capital, Ponce Inlet is no slouch when it comes to dangerous marine life. Besides the random fin popping up in the water, Ponce is a super tight knit community, and the locals tend to keep 1st peak on lock. If you don’t like being hassled or you want a little more elbow room, steer clear of 1st peak. The beach is full of fun peaks without the aggravation.

SPRING SPOTLIGHT

Stress is something we all deal with - work and bills, we all got them! Everybody needs to recharge and treat themselves. You need a personal little oasis where you can tune out the day to day and focus on numero uno. That peaceful, friendly environment is exactly what owner Amanda Williams has created at All Yoga, located on the North Causeway in New Smyrna Beach. You might know the location as Bikram Yoga, but Amanda took over in January of 2015 and breathed new life into the business. First, the place got a head-totoe makeover to create a clean, fresh, and relaxing vibe where you can free yourself of any distractions. She also added more classes and has introduced new styles of yoga - including Vinyasa flow and Power yoga. Additionally, she added a boutique so they are now your one stop shop for all things yoga. So even if you are a newbie, you can look like a guru in your Lululemon.

The great thing about yoga is virtually anyone can do it- whether you are an athlete or a couch potato. Don’t worry about where you are starting from - All Yoga is all about creating a non-judgmental environment where you can improve your personal practice and better yourself. The benefits are endless; build strength, improve balance, increase flexibility, find healing, dial in your backside pig dog, or just escape the day to carve out a little time for yourself - yoga does all those things. Still nervous? Remember, everyone has a first day and you gotta start somewhere. So, no matter where you are on your yoga journey, make a pit stop at All Yoga NSB. Namaste.

JORDAN JONES (1986 - 2016)

R.I.P.

PHOTOS: PATRICK RUDDY

On January 25th, we lost a great member of our community. He will be missed by so many of us and will never be forgotten.

A Memorial Paddle-out will be held on his birthday, April 3rd, at Hiles Beach Ramp in New Smyrna. He would have been 30 years old on this day. Jordan would have wanted nothing more than to have all his family and friends paddle out for this birthday!

To honor and pay respect to Jordan, Fluid spoke with a few of his friends who wanted to share their stories.

I’m not sure where to start when talking about Jordan. There were so many classic moments we shared together over the years from chasing waves and chicks. Not only in the water surfing or teaching groms how to surf, Jordan touched many lives in his short 29 years. I will forever cherish the moments I had with someone I consider not just a friend but my brother. Rest in peace, brother. I know you’re next to me every time I surf. - Josh Nicastro Remember that friend from childhood that always had your back? Who throughout the years you could still count on to be there for you, regardless of how much time elapsed? That was Jordan. He always had a big smile on his face when I'd see him and he'd ask, "How are your folks? I miss seeing you guys!" He was genuine and selfless, and there wasn't anything he wouldn't do to help out a friend in need. When I heard the news of his passing it was like someone had cut off the sound in the room and for a few seconds, I saw red. To say that Jordan will be missed is an understatement. - Patrick Ruddy

Jimmy Lanes Surf Camp. Those 4 years were only my favorite, because you were my surf instructor who took me to the inlet. You believed I had potential, and I needed a bigger challenge. Maybe it was your tattoos, your beautiful smile, your talent, or just my little girl crush on you that had me wanting to do my best with my surfing. I specifically remember one day at Sapphire boardwalk where the waves were a bit rough and to get me to the outside, you had me grab your leash to help me paddle past it, every time that day. It's those little things that made your presence so special for many kids at the camp. I was flattered with a surprising message with a hello and surf invite from you just a month ago. I know you're shredding Gods waves today. Forever in my heart Jordan Jones! - Madison Powers I have loved you since the day you were born! It makes my heart happier to know I told you so many, many times ! I'm gonna miss you lots! - Karen Strickland Jordan you have been heavy on my mind. It's hard for me to believe that we won't bump into one another in the lineup or just around town. You were a fanatical grom when we first met. You moved in across the street with your Mom

and changed the neighborhood. Full of energy and stoke and always up for a surf. We shared many rides to the inlet and back. I got older, and over time our paths separated, but when we met in passing, you were always willing to stop and share some smiles and laughs. I was always impressed by how friendly you were and how giving you were to everyone you met. I hope to split a peak with you again, Jordan. Much Love. - Bill Gallagher I will always remember your generous spirit and kind heart to all the contestants in the specialneeds pageant that you generously devoted your time to year after year. Much love and light through your transition and may you rest in peace, you beautiful soul! - Christie Beu Jordan Jones was an angel in our lives from the day we met him. As a single mom then, I first brought my 7 year old to surf camp and she met Jordan. He instantly won her over. She adored him and she returned summer after summer, anxious to see that amazing smile of his and go for a surf with him. She is 16 now, and he has continually checked in on her. We will miss you terribly, Jordan, but we will see you again. Much love to you and the beautiful family who had a hand in making you the wonderful man you are. - Melissa Cicero

MARCH/APRIL

FISHING OUTLOOK

Spring has arrived and in Florida! Arguably the best time to fish in the sunshine state, spring means that migrating fish will be moving along the Atlantic coast. Here is what to look for in the months to come:

I N S HO R E

PHOTO: PATRICK RUDDY

As we approach March and April, expect the Reds to be swimming in larger schools and grazing shallow grass flats. Redfish have already begun to school up, and they will be plentiful in the months to come. We will also see a large influx of trout inshore. The trout game should step up with the arrival of our warmer spring time weather, granted with whatever population that may be around. Speaking of warmer water, we will continue to see Sheepshead running thick around the jetties.

O F F S HO R E Florida’s central coast is prime for the picking in the months to come. The slight rise in water temperature will see the brave few break away from the school, ready for you to drop in and reap the benefits. Manta rays will also start their migration and with any luck the Cobia will be right there with them. At times, we see dramatic runs occur along the coast in April. Cobia love to hang around navigation markers, wrecks, and artificial reefs, where they swim both at the surface and down deep. Look for Cobia to eat live bait as well as large buck tails and swimbaits. Seabass and flounder will still be on the wrecks as well.

Music Profile: Relief

CFL MUSIC PROFILE

Where do you guys live? In the beautiful city of Port Orange, Florida. Originally from? Port Orange, FL How did Relief get its' start and get to where it is today? We were just some college students that met up in their hometown who loved to have acoustic jams on the beach. After a while we worked our way up to forming a band and playing at bars, charity’s, and festivals. How long have you all been singing and playing instruments? James – 12 years of guitar/vocals Jonathan – 10 years of drumming Paul – 8 years of bass guitar Do you play music full time or do you also have side jobs? All three of us have been college students while working side jobs. However, we are now very fortunate to play music any chance we get! Who's your favorite local band (besides your own of course)? The Supervillians Where will Relief be 5 years from now? Hopefully touring, making albums, and continuing to build our fanbase! If you could tour with any band of your choosing, who would it be with? That’s a hard one… I guess if we really could only choose one then it’d have to be Pepper! They are our reggae-dub idols and put on one of the best shows we've ever seen. Favorite venue to play? The Flagler Tavern in NSB. If you had to describe your music in less than five words... Funky, Positive, Relaxing, Reggae. What do you think your "greatest opportunity" has been thus far in your music career? Playing at a party for one of our favorite magazines…FLUID!! We have always admired how you guys depict Central Florida culture (surfing, fishing, music, nature). stage is yours. Relief would like to thank all the venues that gave us an opportunity to play our music and most importantly all the fans that come out and support us! We are all about spreading good vibes through music, radiating positivity, and connecting with our fans in an uplifting way. Check out our website thereliefband.com and follow

LOCAL SWEETS

Beachside Candy Co. Stroll down Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach and you will find a happy blue building with welcoming seating on the porch that beckon you inside The Beachside Candy Company. Once inside its historic doors, you will not be disappointed, because it’s all about candy, ice cream, and things that make you feel like a kid again. The shelves are lined with a mix of treats that will satisfy every member of the family. Think chocolate seashells, varieties of saltwater taffy, and specialty confections that will make you go, “Oh my gosh, I remember these!” For those of us who feel variety is the spice of life, grab a bag and make your own custom mix in the huge candy bar that lines the wall. There you can fill up on associated gummies, jelly beans, sprees, and other fruity delights. Or if you really want to treat yourself, stroll over to the glass case where you can drool over we said handmade. In a world of mass production, it really means something when someone takes the time to craft something especially for you. Their chocolate creations vary from day to day but include almond bark,

chocolates, many which are handmade chocolates. Yes,

peanut clusters, coconut haystacks, and mouthwatering chocolate turtles. There is something nostalgic about walking to the beach with a cold, drippy, delicious ice cream cone in your hand, and because the owner, Julie Rambo, wants to make sure everyone leaves with a smile, so premium ice cream rounds out the list of treats. Beachside Candy Company serves Hershey Ice cream which is thick, creamy, and delicious. We are partial to the strawberry, which is creamy ice cream loaded with chunks of sweet, delicious strawberries. There are more than 16 flavors to choose from, including Superman, Green Mint and Peanut Butter Cup. The commitment to quality and variety is what makes Beachside Candy Company so special and what keeps people coming back. So next time you are in New Smyrna, treat yourself to a smile, and a sweet treat. You deserve it.
