NOTE

R.I.P. RYAN MICHELBRINK As many of you know we've been mourning the loss of a great friend who sadly lost his life in a car accident on Sunday February 4th. Ryan Michelbrink was the type of person who was so loved by all. For me, he was the type of person who always put me in a good mood when I saw him. Full of energy and he loved life more than anyone I've ever met. He was everyone's best friend and was a true joy to be around; a local legend to say the least! As we celebrated his life in the weeks following his passing, I realized that these coastal Florida towns are very unique. To further elaborate, I'm referring to how close knit these little surf/ fish towns truly are. For Ryan, it was in the form of a thousand people at his funeral and hundreds at his paddle out the following day. Ryan lived life to the fullest! After hearing many people say that about our dear friend, it made me start to think. What does that really mean? It actually boggled my mind and threw me for a slight tailspin as I attempt to figure out what that meant to me. It gave me a little panic attack. I’m not going to lie. After dwelling on it, I came to the conclusion that it has a different meaning for each person. For me, it made me think of something my Grandma always says, “life isn't a dress rehearsal. You only got one shot at it, make the most of it! Keep enjoying the good things in life and makes sure to savor the time with your love ones.” We miss you, Ryan! Bryan Forand | Editor

EATS

FLUID EATS:

OCEAN DECK It’s a rare place that can keep both locals and tourists coming back year after year. But, that is exactly what the Ocean Deck has been doing, for over four decades, by staying true to its reputation for being laid back, fun and delicious. To keep up their killer reputation, the Deck has to offer a little bit of somethin’ somethin’ for everyone. To make sure they got what you need, they always have top notch nightly live entertainment, stiff drinks, amazing food and then there is always the ocean just a few feet away.

Ocean Deck is the type of place you can enjoy with your lady while setting the mood with the ocean breeze, take your tourist friends to show off how awesome it is to live at the beach, or just pop in for a quick bite. While we love the big burgers and fresh seafood, our favorite way to enjoy the Deck is with an order of their famous Rasta Wings, a Crunchy Tuna Appetizer, and a 32 ounce beach bucket, all while taking in the live music with the waves in the background. Check their website for future events this spring and summer. We love that a day at the Deck will not leave you broke too. They got you covered with drink specials and menu prices that make locals happy!

MUSIC

PROFILE

FLUID SOUNDS:

THE TREES OF LIFE Photo: Patrick Ruddy

Where are you based out of? Sanford/West Volusia Originally from? JT and Tim are from Ohio, Skylar and Dave are Florida boys.

picking guitars as a kid, and has been chasing music ever since. Tim Samples - (lead guitar) picked up his first guitar when he was young. Skylar Rush - (drums, vocals) started drumming at 12 or 13.

How did Trees of Life get its' start and get to where it is today? JT had been writing our first couple songs as his solo project while Dave and Tim were in a band called The Heavy Craigs. Skylar came on through a recommendation. After his audition, we knew it was a solid fit. The Trees of Life are still standing today because we respect and cultivate each member’s unique contribution and style as cornerstones to our sound and message.

Do you all play music full time or have side jobs? In our minds, we play full-time, haha. We all have side jobs, but the collective goal of the band is to spread our music and message any chance we get.

How did you come up with the band's name? In nearly every culture on the planet, the tree of life symbolizes unity, connectedness, and the dissipation of social constructs being replaced by the realization that we are all simply human. Our songs consistently expound that theme, and so the name fell right into place.

Where will the band be 5 years from now? We hope to be sharing our music as far and wide as opportunity lets us! We have several albums worth of tunes written, and we don’t ever stop inventing ways to spread positivity, so we’re gonna be here for a while.

How long have you all been singing and playing instruments? List band members and instruments. JT “Smoof” White - (Acoustic guitar/lead vocals) has been playing since he was a teenager, but didn’t start singing seriously until The Trees of Life. Dave “Smash” Swanson - (Bass guitar) started

Who's your favorite local band (besides your own of course)? We’re big fans of The Intracoastals and Brothers Within.

If you could tour with any band of your choosing, who would it be with? Dispatch or Dirty Heads for sure. Favorite venue to play? We love playing by the beach, even if that just means a couple guitars and a cajon in the sand.

five words... Boardshorts, bikinis, harmony, and happiness. What do you think is your "greatest opportunity" has been thus far in your music career? We’ve had the great fortune to work with The Original Wailers in the past. The folks from Rootfire International also thought enough of The Trees to include us in the lineup for Rootfire at the Park, their most recent festival in Cocoa. It was incredible to share the stage with so many gifted musicians—from local bands just gaining a foothold in the scene like us, to legends like Michael Franti and Spearhead, Citizen Cope, and Stephen Marley. Anything you'd like to add? The stage is yours. Massive thanks to Fluid Magazine for including us in this issue! We’ve been fans of the magazine since it started up, and we’re stoked to be a part of what y’all do for the local scene that we know and love. Thanks to all of our fans and everyone who took the time to read this, we love you all! Please be on the lookout for our new album, “We Are All Connected” which drops April 7th on iTunes, GooglePlay, Amazon, and Spotify. Feel free to come celebrate the release with us at Cafe DaVinci in Deland. Thanks to everyone who’s helped us create this record, and supported us along the way. HERE WE GROW!!!

PHOTOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT

BEHIND THE LENS:

ANDREW GILBERT Hi Andrew, where and when was the last image you captured? The Last image I shot was from a tree stand last week while hog hunting in Osteen, FL.

PHOTOGRAPHER:

ANDREW GILBERT RESIDES: DAYTONA BEACH, FL SHOOTING SINCE: 2011 AGE: 21 @andrewgilbertphoto

What's a normal day in your life look like? I don’t have many normal days if I’m not in class, but I am usually either on the water or in the woods filming and photographing. And If not, I am either traveling or coordinating various shoots. Give us a little background on how you got into photography? I was first introduced to photography in a high school. What is the game plan after college. Will you be pursuing a photography career full time? Nothing is solidified yet, but my plan is to work full time shooting in the outdoor industry. What was your favorite Fluid Magazine shoot so far and why? The craziest shoot that I have been on was an offshore tournament a few years ago. It was my first time outside of the inlet and the seas stood up to about 9 feet. Even though I soaked my camera it was really a memorable experience. What inspires you? I find inspiration mainly from fly-fishing, hunting and the Everglades. Is there anyone who helped you the most on your way to become a photog? I can’t boil it down to one, but I have been incredibly fortunate to have a number of awesome mentors. I would be a shadow of who I am today without those people who took the time to pass their knowledge onto me.

22

What is your favorite place to shoot? By far, The Florida Everglades. What do you enjoy the most about being a photographer in our area? I love how laid back and welcoming everyone is in the area. It makes it easy to be creative. Are you currently working on any new projects? Not to get into too much detail, but there are a few things in motion with a couple of military units as well as some work about the Florida Everglades. Do you have a few tips for young aspiring photographers? Figure out what your passion is and focus your work to that. Keep shooting, keep refining your work and when you think you’re good, keep going and never feel contempt with where you are. If you do that long enough and you’re easy to work with, everything else will begin to fall in place. Any Last words or shout outs? There so many people to shout out, but I don’t think they would all fit. Thank you for this opportunity and help over the past few years.

SPOTCHECK

ORMOND BEACH, FL

I think of Ormond Beach as the hidden gem of Volusia County. There is a great crew of locals, amazing food, great nightlife, and an upscale vibe. One town north of Daytona Beach along Florida’s Atlantic Coast, Ormond Beach offers a first-class experience without sacrificing its small-town grace. Every year we host two events at the Grind Gastropub and Kona Tiki Bar, and it's by far some of the

best times we could ever ask for. There is so much that Ormond has to offer, but the Grind has a special place in our hearts and we highly recommend it for your next date night, weekend brunch, or for a fun night out. Ormond Beach, bordered by the Tomoka River on the west and the Atlantic Ocean on the east, is the perfect location for taking advantage of water activities that we have at our finger tips.

Why we love it - If you enjoy the outdoors, welcome to paradise! There are endless opportunities abound for fishing, surfing, hiking, biking, boating, strolling the beach, or just pulling over to admire the view or take a closer look. History - Over a hundred years ago, Ormond was a winter playground for northern industrialists. It became a practical destination for pioneering automobile racers to find top speeds on hard-packed sand, and, today, it's known as a nostalgic place where modern Daytona 500 revelers can discover where racing began. Great dining experiences & happy hour honey holes – Grind Gastropub and Kona Tiki Bar, Supper 31 Club, Riptides, Lulu's, Jimmy Hula's, Ormond Brewery, Charlie Horse, Hull's Seafood, River Grille, Houligans, Pirana Grill, and Tomoka Brewery. Weekends are pretty fun all around town, but keep an eye out on Thursday nights at the Grind; the place goes off! Best places to stay – Ormond is kind of hurting on places to stay the night. There are a few random places on the beach, but we recommend dialing in a VRBO or trying to crash with a friend who lives in the area. Something you probably didn't know - What locals call as the "Loop" is a must see for locals and tourists alike. The Loop is a Scenic Loop & Trail that is a 30-mile stretch of roadways leading through dense oak canopy sawgrass marshes and along the Atlantic coast. The best way to describe it would be to call it Olde Florida. You’re able to get a feeling of what generations before us experienced. The road skirts three state parks, as well as several county and city parks, and allows views of rivers, creeks, marshes, dunes, beaches, and historic homes. Social scene - Due to the fact that there is a solid nightlife, it is a great spot to meet a new friend. The beach from Spring to Fall is pretty epic, too. From the mass injection of spring breakers, to the influx of the Orlando crowd, you can pretty much be guaranteed five star eye candy. Something different – If the beach and the river isn’t your thing, the golfing is pretty stellar. World-class golf awaits you in the Ormond Beach area, one of Florida's fastest growing golf destinations. Ormond Beach is covered in famous fairways designed by the legends of the sport.

Fisherman's Paradise - Ormond Beach can have an abundance of fish species. In addition, it also has tons of variety when it comes to the type of fishing you can partake in. Fishing in Ormond Beach offers the angler unique options to enjoy the sport. Offshore, Inshore, backwater, surf fishing, they have something for everyone and it is all in close proximity. You can salt water fish one day, freshwater the next, and brackish on another day! You really couldn’t ask for anything else. Local knowledge – It's a magnet for good looking people. Whether you’re at the beach or out on the town, it's pretty mind blowing. With this type of atmosphere, everything seems to be a little better than most experiences. Best time of year - Spring Break is hands down the best time of year to be in Ormond Beach. For locals and tourists alike, one thing remains constant, the beach is everyone’s top priority. Just to the south in Daytona Beach, college kids load up their cars to the rim and make the voyage to the World’s Most Famous Beach. It is all about day drinking, sunburns, and partying the night away. Ormond is connected to Daytona Beach, meaning there are wild times to be had! Hazards - There are sharks, but nothing like New Smyrna Inlet. Locals can be hard on out of towners, but for the most part it's a no worries vibe.

Photos: Andrew Gilbert

List the members of Team My Escape Sportfishing? Sonny Spano, Randy Mayo, Matt Kremser What are three items you never leave the dock without? Favorite lures, plenty of rods, lots of beer Preferred Rig? Single and double-rigged Livewires, Islanders, Black Barts What attributes separate a good fishing team compared to what you would consider a great team? TEAMWORK, knowing the boat and gear. Being able to land a fish without having to speak to each other, and always knowing your place, where to be and when to be. Most important is to have a blast (beer helps) and enjoy it. How can you not when you’re in the middle of nowhere, your phones don’t work and you’re in the cobalt blue with your buddies! What do you feel is the biggest challenge of fishing tournaments in our area? Weather and distance. The gulf stream is a long way in our area. The weather plays a big factor. When you are running 60+ miles to fish, things need to line up. We fish tournaments down south. They only have to go a couple miles out to get a bite. We have to run 50-60 miles for certain fish. They are surrounded by 500 boats. We are the only ones in sight. I like our challenges. Can you tell me about how you got into fishing competitively? I’m a very competitive person by nature. I love fishing and always want to better myself and my team. What better way is there than to put yourself in the mix of the best of the best? By making it a competition it makes the challenge that much greater. By making the challenge greater it makes us try harder, pay attention more, and think outside the box more. It makes us want to be on top. Which tournaments do you all plan on fishing in 2018? NE Wahoo Challenge 3 days- Jacksonville, King of the Inlet 3 tournaments in 1Ponce, Conch House Wahoo Challenge – St. Augustine, Chasen Tailz – Jupiter, Old Bahama Bay Wahoo Charity Cup – West End Bahamas Do you have a rival when it comes to fishing competitively? None, just friends. Team Marine Specialties, Blanck Check, Team Total Vision. I fish with

these guys and fish against these guys during tournaments. We help each other out. The facts might be a little off during tournaments, though.

Where else, besides Florida, have you had the opportunity to fish? All over the States, Several Places in Mexico, Costa Rica, Bahamas

What’s your most embarrassing fishing story/memory? Having a monster Cobia come to the boat and tried to gaff him with the rubber tip still on. The fish obviously got away.

Any last words or people to thank? My Team for putting in the time. My wife for putting up with my Obsession/Addiction, love ya Babe! I’ll keep bringing sushi home for as long as you let me.

MARCH/APRIL FISHING OUTLOOK

FISHING REPORT WITH SKYE BURKHARDT Spring has sprung! It is finally warming up, as well as the water temperatures, and we’re getting some of those south winds, also, pushing through. It's nothing you can't dodge hovering mangrove lines in Mosquito Lagoon. This winter, I must say, has been a tough one due to this last years summer heat, hurricanes, and this past winters "week freeze”. They sure did some major changes and damage in our lagoon and waterways causing fishkill as well as a lot of dead sea grass. Once beautiful grassy flats where redfish and trout laid are now just sand and muck, sending you scouting further for those redfish. I have been spending full days out on the water scouting Mosquito Lagoon and searching for drum, which has been a challenge due to the changes and damage. Thanks to Mother Nature the bite has been tough! The temperatures are warming and it is starting to feel more like Spring. This February wasn't our typical winter cold fronts, but the black drum are running and I'm finding them in schools throughout the south ends of Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River Lagoon, and from the railroad trestles in IRL to dropping blue crab in the deep waters of Haulover Canal. A live free lined jumbo shrimp or a jig skipping slowing across the bottom should get the black drum’s attention in the shallows, in the grassy flats during the high tide, and out in sand holes during the low tides. If you're an early bird, A top water makes for a fun bite! Poppin corks, Bomber Lures, Badonk-A-Donk, DOA Shrimp, Gold Spoon, Super Spook are some of my favorites lures. It sure is something seeing those big black drum pushing across the shallows! With the warmer weather and water clearing up, this is the right time to hit the grassy flats of Mosquito Lagoon, especially if you are looking to work an artificial and sight cast for those beautiful reds. This is the time to get out there! The low tides are low and the high tides are low giving you a better chance to see your catch and make a cast. I am starting to see redfish scattered throughout the Lagoon and in small schools. It is making a recovery slowly, but all positive things are happening in our lagoon. I prefer to fish the high tide going out. I find it to be much more

@brassyhooker87 Inshore Adventures with Skye

productive. If you are looking to reeling the big guys, the causeways are stacking up with bull reds and black drum as well as those dinosaurs in Haulover Canal. If you know how to and when to fish it, you will have an epic night. You can't go wrong with live shrimp and/or blue crab! Along docks and finders there is large breeder snook schooled up. Yes, you heard that right! Florida's week freeze didn't take out all our big snook, thank goodness! By surprise, I cast netted a school of baby snook, of course releasing them back to their habit to grow. I must say my heart was full seeing those babies as they are the future of our fishery. I find fishing for snook at the high tide through the first hour outgoing to be most successful. When free lining a shrimp or a 3" DOA Shad-tail, the snook can't resist them! Lots of Trout and snapper at the docks and anywhere you see that has structure I am certain those little nibbles will be trout, sheepshead or snapper making their appearance or they’re, ya know, just trying to steal your shrimp. 37

@brillscott TALK

STORY

TALK STORY:

SCOTT BRILL 38

What motto do you live by if any? My motto is, “one day at a time, try to enjoy every moment.” How long have you been surfing for? Since I was eight or nine. My brother surfs too. You surfed competitively as an amateur and professional. Please tell us more about this. I started competing at 12. I won two east coast champs and was invited to first N.S.S.A. National team. I turned pro at 16 and was youngest pro in the world. My highest rank was 55 in the world, got a few seconds and thirds. I beat a few big names and lost a few, lol. How did you get into building surfboards? It was a later in life thing. I always hung out at the glass shop and shaping room with Mad Dog and others. Boards are art.

What is our youth lacking? I have hope for them. They can be very impressive sometimes, but they need more face to face communication instead of phones. What is the best traveling experience in your life? My first trip to California staying with Mark Richards for two weeks at seventeen thanks to Greg Wade. The Bahamas in the early eighties. Any of them, really. Thanks for your time. Any last shout outs or thank you’s? To all friends and family in the ups and downs, the Lambert family in California, my wife, and too many others to name.

What was it like in 60’s and 70's being a surfer in our area? I’m not that old, lol. I do remember seventies well, the smell of coconut oil and big single fins. My mom and neighborhood at Ponce would have big beach parties in the dunes after swimming all day. There were crazy old boards with bungee cord leashes. It was a very small town kind of feel.
